“Always raise thy heart and mind to God, and with the light of grace which thou dost possess, never lose sight of the immutable being of the infinite and eternal God, or of His incomprehensible goodness which has led Him to draw man out of nothing, to raise him to His glory and enrich him with precious gifts”

Book Review— St. Maria Goretti: A Journey into Forgiveness and Redemption
Book Review— St. Maria Goretti: A Journey into Forgiveness and Redemption
Forgiving people who wronged you can be tough. Jesus constantly told his disciples to show mercy and forgive. People who have modeled excellence in virtue and holiness can be canonized as official saints in the Catholic Church. They reflect the light of Christ in the world. Sometimes it seems like the saints are people who are inaccessible to the ordinary person. But when you break it down the…

Being Jewish (or just not Christian in general) can make reading Les Mis such a funny experience. It’s such a catholic story. But I always forget that and I’m sitting there wondering why characters make certain choices and then I remember and I’m like “Oh right. Jesus.”

as a 16th century clergyman what does machete think of the printing press
I think by the time he was born the printing press had been around for almost a century and a half, so I'd reckon the society as a whole was largely past it's initial novelty and controversy. Machete himself is bookish and nerdy, he's very invested in gathering knowledge about various topics and trying to piece together a good picture of how the world works. Getting access to reading material would be a lot harder if every book was still copied individually by hand. His standards are pretty high though, there's a lot of poorly translated, shoddily printed and flimsily bound books around and he's prone to scrunching his nose at them.

DC Comics Incorrect Quotes Pt 237
Harley: I'm Harley, I make jokes when I'm uncomfortable.
Jason: Why don't they make stained glass fish tanks? Give those fish catholic guilt.
Selina: Fascinated by the implication that it's the stained glass that gives catholics the guilt.

I absolutely believe that Foreman is gay. I have two reasons for that. First and most obvious, absolutely no one who is attracted to women at all would let themselves fumble Thirteen that hard. There is absolutely no way. Second, he grew up evangelical. That's actually canon (for once in my life). And he's not married, he doesn't have kids, none of that. Even though he's a doctor and objectively would be able to take care of a family.
Since he's gay, he has to deal with the absolute worst case of internalized homophobia you can possibly imagine. He definitely grew up hearing that gay people are all going to hell and that they deserve it and everything else like that. So young Foreman never even let himself see that he was gay because that was just too dangerous for him. Which means that adult Foreman is completely ignorant of who he is, except on the rare occasions when he loses control (have you seen how he looks at Chase if he's been drinking?). Those episodes do put him in a spiral of self hate though, so he keeps clinging to control more and more over the course of the show.
And at least Chase knows that, and he tries to tell Foreman that he's gay exactly the same way House would: by calling him repressed and hooking him up to a monitor that he rigged. We never see Foreman get over the repression/internalized homophobia even after he got everything he wanted, which is incredibly sad. But Chase still keeps trying to drag him out of his shell and I think it's because he sees what's really going on with Foreman (Catholic guilt sees evangelical shame, I need to write more about that).
Foreman is kind of like his own tragedy and we never get to see enough of him As Himself instead of him As House 2.0.

I have a germ of a theory that good Christian fiction has stories that are less about shaving down your personality to meet some specific mold of what a good Christian looks like, and more about "how gloriously different are all the saints."
Not that the Christian life doesn't involve fighting against our own sinful nature and conforming ourselves to Christ-like behavior, but I think it makes for better, more realistic, and more universal stories when you also recognize that people have different gifts and flaws and they're going to be called to use their unique personalities to serve the kingdom of God in their own unique way, instead of assuming everyone has to conform themselves to a very specific (often secular-culturally based) image of good behavior. It makes for a much more vibrant story.

A morning prayer that was shared on r/Episcopalian which I loved, from the Book of Common Prayer (1979). It's from the Ministration to the Sick (under "Prayers for use by a Sick Person"), but I hope it'll be helpful for anyone facing a difficult day. I prayed it this morning; I'll certainly need it often.
This is another day, O Lord. I know not what it will bring forth, but make me ready, Lord, for whatever it may be. If I am to stand up, help me to stand bravely. If I am to sit still, help me to sit quietly. If I am to lie low, help me to do it patiently. And if I am to do nothing, let me do it gallantly. Make these words more than words, and give me the Spirit of Jesus. Amen.
—The Book of Common Prayer (1979), p.461.
