When you’re walking a cat with a leash, you’re supposed to let them explore at their own pace, right? So how do you get them to go home? Lure them with treats, or something else?
Cats don't tend to want to walk too far outside their own little territory. Typical cat walks may only be as far as the back yard, or around the block. The leash and harness are more to keep the cat from darting-
I say typical because there are absolutely cats that do not fit this description. High energy cats who like long walks and need that outlet may need to really get moving in order to have a successful outing.
I would recommend treats to help encourage them back to the home - combine this with a suggestion or word phrase for them to get used to hearing before you start giving them treats. They'll learn to listen for that sound to know when it's time to head home.
However, I know some folks will bring a backpack with them and opt for carrying the cat back that way. I like this option too! I love the option of having a carrier of some kind just in case the cat gets scared (or tired, or overwhelmed, or whatever-) so they have someplace safe to recover without fear of bolting!
