Travel nurse contract recap
Last week I finished my first 13 week contract as a travel RN Case Manager. Overall it went pretty well.
There were some issues the first few weeks due to ridiculous infighting between the CMs and about what things were whose responsibility that was clear to me was all being caused by one ridiculous SW who made everything a fight and took everything personally. She was also a traveler and when I started I was told she was becoming staff. In the end she must have angered the wrong person (once she literally got in a screaming match on the phone with an interpreter because she thought he was taking too long to ask questions) cause one day we just got told she wasn’t coming back. After that the whole team worked so well together.
All the other CMs and SWs were so welcoming and helpful. My biggest fear with traveling was that I am not a person who does well when I don’t know where things are what resources are available. I like being self sufficient from a deep seeded fear of being a burden. But everyone was always quick to answer questions or give tips. They all told me I adapted quickly and were ego boostingly sad when I left.
About a month before the end of my contract my manager asked me if I wanted to extend. I said sure. The pay was good (I saved in 13 weeks the same amount I’d been able to save in the past 5 years) and I was content and felt stable in my roll. But then the hospital corporate just never responded to the contract request from my company. After 2 weeks my recruiter suggested applying to a few other listings as back up. So I did.
I could have pushed harder to get the extension but within a few days of applying to other places I got offered a contact back down in OC California. It’s 3 12s nights working as a CM for the transfer center of one of the trauma hospitals. I am familiar with a lot of their processes because I have been on the sending end working with them many many times. It’s a bigger hospital than I tend to favor but I think since I will be transfer center and not dealing with actual patients on the floors it wont be so bad. The beauties of transfer center case management is never talking directly to patients/families and only dealing with the bringing in of patients and not the discharge issues.
I am happy that I will be back down in an area I know and around some friends. I am still not big on going to much (I did go to a Giants game while I was up there but nothing else touristy) so being able to just have dinner with a friend occasionally will be great.
Overall I am pleased with my decision to give travel nursing a try. 13 weeks flew by. Money was good. I felt like I was really able to help my patient population. Only had 1 issue with my manager where it felt like I was being thrown under the bus. Nothing really came of it and it was obvious she was just trying to blame her own miscommunication on me. Though that having happened just a few days after I was asked to extend likely played into me not being as willing to go out of my way to make the extension happen.
Here’s hoping the next contract goes as well.

*thinking about a past client who was denied clemency release. His daughters and grandson came to his trial with hopes he'll get released because he had terminal cancer. He died a month later, and then, having to advocate so shitty WDVA would give him burial funds. Remembering how I dropped the client's large file of military records on the program manager's desk and declared he had an honorable discharge in addition to his OTH - because he had two discharges since he served. The honorable washes it all. Remembering when I got a VM from his daughters because WDVA provided the burial funds*
I never met that client, but we knew each other existed. He was on my caseload through the four years I worked there. Playing with promises of release on a chessboard.
Fuck the justice system.
