Sorry for any mistakes, English is not my first language.

Alastair is my favorite character. I identify a lot with him because I had to take care of a parent who had sunk into alcoholism. I can tell you it's a shitty situation that I wouldn't wish for my worst enemy. It is truly destructive to have to take on such a responsibility.

Alastair is a complex character. He feels a lot of loneliness, anger and bitterness. He does not know how to manage his emotions so he is destructive and jealous of other people's happiness. Is it abnormal? No, his reaction is just sadly human. But is this a valid reason to hurt others? No. It is not an excuse. Nevertheless, what I really like about him is that he was aware of his mistakes and tried to correct them. He ended up accepting that nothing obliges the merry thieves to forgive him but still chose to secretly watch over Thomas. To avoid jeopardizing the relationship of Thomas and his friends, he decides not to enter into a relationship with him. He helped prepare the antidote in COG.

Furthermore, he got rid of his blond hair dye showing that he is beginning to come to terms with his Persian origins. He ended his relationship with Charles because he realized he wasn't happy. He ended up opening up to his sister and sharing the burden of his father's alcoholism. In short, he struggles to become a better version of himself.

I understand some may not like him but Alastair can't just be reduced to "an asshole". It is much more complex than that. I don't like to see that some minimize the trauma he went through (taking care of an alcoholic parent, suffered racism, had a toxic relationship). Understanding his struggles and trials is by no means incompatible with condemning his mistakes.

Finally, I had a hard time understanding why some condemn him but adore Will, who was however himself absolutely awful for SEVERAL YEARS. The guy called Tessa a prostitute and publicly humiliated Tatiana by reading her diary in front of everyone.
