The difference between Odin!Tyr and real!Tyr is that Odin REALLY hammed it up.
Real!Tyr is so... chill. He has issues which he is determined to solve with a lot of travelling, introspection and meditation. He is so much more secretive... and he really prefers to focus on other people and their issues than his own.
Real!Tyr is also not that hot on fighting, but you know that he would at least help against monsters and animals. He really cares more about other people than himself.

re prev post also rereading the hunger games made me truly wish it had gotten a tv show adaptation instead of the movie one..... i think there was a post on here that discussed how suzanne collins was involved in writing tv screenplays and she translated some of that tv storytelling into her books in terms of pacing and setting up tension as a way to also reflect the hunger games' reality tv format and i truly couldnt agree more. i do think that its not the kind of story that translates well to a big budget screen adaptation, regardless of if its for cinemas or for tv, but still a show could have done a significantly better justice to it i believe

asher is a variation of a couple of tropes, obviously, because i created him this way, which leads to me often being able to pinpoint ashers in other media by sheer tumblr osmosis with no actual knowledge of the show or their charakters
which made me think how that would be something asher and/or devin would also be able to do, and everytime i watch something with an asher archetype in it i picture him watching this show with devin, either actively or passively while in the same room, and going: /oh, this is me, isn't it?/ when they appear

so i watched hot fuzz after i saw that tumblr post saying how it actually depicts a queer relationship
and HONESTLY?
knowing that and watching the movie it really feels like you are being slapped with queer
like, the very beginning is about nicholas and his past relationship, his ex girlfriend telling him he cares about work more than anything else.
he moves to a tiny village, where he gets his new partner danny, who is super goofy but excited and loves shitty cop movies and keeps trying to befriend nicholas SO hard and nicholas keeps rebuffing him and only giving 1 word replies.
and then nicholas just... starts to open up to danny and goes with him to the pub.
and the atmosphere changes DRASTICALLY.
suddenly they are sitting at a table, its quiet, its dark, they are looking into each others eyes deeply, smiling softly.
nicholas finally talks about himself and his life and danny acts EXACTLY like a female love interest. like absolutely identical.
i sat there and i was fucking floored. i didnt expect that. this was played completely straight (sure with a joke at the end, but this is a comedy movie and it didnt cheapen the moment!).
and they just... continue. nicholas walks danny home, danny invites him for beer, they watch cop movies and fall asleep NEXT to each other. touching.
it was a date. just straight up a date.
also theres this bit about nicholas having a peace lily and he buys danny one for his birthday (he only finds out on the day of and panics and rushes off to find a gift asap, which is INCREDIBLY because we have learned previously he straight up forgot his girlfriends birthdays!!!!).
and of course we all know that lilies are yuri.

I just wanted to tell you how much I love your writing! You're literally the only author I trust with writing Alastor instead of some strange rapist carricature of him lol
Tumblr media
Thank you , that is a huge compliment 🥺I really strive to write him as in-character as possible and he is canonically a southern gentleman. I could describe Alastor acting like you mentioned but it wouldn’t be him (imo).

tmes love genderfuck weird gender girlboys etc and love saying they are one, because in their mind its the weirdest, most abnormal and repulsive thing to cisgender society, making it transgressive to them. it really shows their internal bias and hidden bigotry, because what they end up picturing is a trans woman that doesnt pass. and all the imagery is of old transmysoginistic carricatures and characters from media that they say is so "gender goals" but are at best thinly veiled mockery of transfeminine bodies. its just another form of fetishisation. it's not (always) sexual, but it's still fetishisation. and you use the aesthetic as a nice 'gotcha' or way to farm performative clout, just another quirky tool in your arsenal. are people so bereft of their own imagery that they have to scrape the bottom of the transmisogynistic barrel? am i supposed to be thankful that you find our bodies so 'weird' it's the core of your aesthetic? everybody wants to fuck trans women, but calls it something else. and now everybody wants to look like one and be surrounded by the image of us, without wanting to look at actual trans women or include them in your social spheres

I may have already said the same thing elsewhere, but I am am so happy with how Larian wrote Minsc. In past years WotC has been remodeling Minsc into a franchise mascot for all of DnD, and in the process they turned him into a carricature.
In the various media he starred in he's been nothing but a one line spewing dumb muscle guy. Haha, he has a hamster, FUNNEH. I think the most egregious case is his cameo in the Neverwinter MMO, which was just insulting. And the writing around him in the Legends of Baldur's Gate comic series was not great either.
One of my biggest fears towards BG3 was, that Larian would continue the trend. Just empty fanservice to cash in on nostalgia. And then they go ahead and fucking nail his characterisation.
Bless.

hi! may i ask why you don't like TO? i'm still in the process of watching TVD (i've been fighting and clawing my way through season 5 and what the FUCK is this clownery) and i was about to give up and just watch TO because honestly TVD has become so boring without the mikaelsons that not even bonnie and caroline can save it (i also know pretty much everything that happens in the show and i am decidedly NOT a fan of the magical babies and all the other crap), but i've been stalking your blog for half an hour now (not in a creepy way i promise! i just LOVE your fics and fell down a rabbit hole) and it seems like it might not be worth it?
sorry, that was honestly completely incoherent😭. please forgive me, i am having some trouble creating sentences today.
i mean, as i understand it, a magical wonderchild is the CRUX of TO's plot, and personally, i was not willing to subject myself to that. and ever since then, every single thing i have learned about TO has been against my will, and every single thing made has me go ... the fuck???? i'm sorry to say, but the impression i get is that that's a show that turned its characters into carricatures of themselves, twisted the lore into nonsense (as if it had much sense in the first place ...), and suffers from Late Series Syndrome from s1e1. so in a way, maybe i should be thankful to the magical wonderbrat #1 (i shudder to type something like that) for being such an obviously terrible plotpoint that i gave up the idea of watching immediately, so none of the more insidiously terrible plotpoints could get me.
i haven't seen it, and i have come to the conclusion that i'm happier that way, but none of that means you shouldn't watch it if you want to. who am i to tell you what to do? i just don't think you should expect it to be any more interesting than the s5 you're trudging through (and s5 is actually excellent compared to the nonsense that follows, which isn't a great compliment to s5), only infinitely more frustrating.

fuck marry kill the Darkling's #1 squad from book, show, and stupid duology: Fruzsi, Ivan, and Yuri Vedenen
Fuck Fruszi, because she's cute af and slightly nuts.
Marry Ivan, because he's my spirit animal every time he appears on screen or page.
Kill Yuri, because as clever as he is in some aspects, in others he's written as a carricature done by a person, who didn't get a single point of their critics.

I need all of yall to read the "Mythologies of Gaza" segment in Illan Pape's "10 myths about Israel"
It's telling that in all these weeks - it's an acronym for "Islamic Resistance Movement" though it also references an arabic word meaning "enthusiasm" (I assume in the sense of willpower)
It's another example of simplistic "culture" narratives & prejudice preventing real understanding of foreign politics are simply politics because people everywhere are just people (a point also made by Hans Rosling in 'Factfulness', though applied to different regions)
Knowing the actual political situation, I could actually legit see myself having voted for Hamas, especially as someone who tends to tactically vote for the least worse option rather than view it as an identity or total endorsement
Crucial Facts to know:
The Oslo accords were a sham peace process that offered at most a patchy Bantustan with no real sovereignty
After Arafat's death, the PLO came to be viewed as a Vichy France type puppet government that did little to stop violence in the west bank
Israel poured money into religious movements to weaken the power of secular leftists such as Fatah, actively discouraging secularism
So why did Hamas win the election?
They provided actual welfare & education, which the so-called secular leftists had failed to do so.
They were not playing along with the sham peace process, so they were perceived as more credible
They wouldn't budge on the right for refugees to return to Palestine being a prerequisite for peace (though they did offer a 10 year ceasefire in exchange for Israel retreating to the pre '67 borders - far from the "kill em all" operation they're being portrayed as by using some old-timesy government from their chaotic early days. )
So from the PoV of the population they were basically next to the only ones doing something about the problem.
Now, I'm not saying this to lionize them at all - they have many imperfections, such as repression against perceived collaborators. I'm no "supporter" of anyone or anything.
But what party, movement or government is perfect? If imperfect governments justified invasion or deligitimized fighting back, boy do I have bad news about... most governments ever, really.
Also, the resistance coalition is bigger than any one org, Hamas is just one part of it. This endless harping on it as proof of why Palestinians are evil is just a racist fucking carricature.

I've been working a lot with ink the past few days and i'm really digging the textures of these! I saw anteikovich use a dry brush for some dot effect once and i tried to implement that here! Although i wish the dots would look a tad bit stronger, because it almost looks like an airbrush texture. The brown areas is just some ink in an old pentel brush that i thinned with water.
I feel like with ink and watercolors you get so much freedom of materials and it's really experiment friendly. Like i taped a sponge bit to a stick and BOOM - new texture!! Easy and efficient :) if you have cool ideas for more textures, let me know please! I'm eager to try new things.
Thematically i'm looking childrensbook art and animal carricature atm, which will hopefully help me stay on course for that whole concept art goal of mine, without getting disctracted, or - even worse - bored.

I think people forget that Gendry in show got Edric Storm plot. Gendry in books is a tertiary character. If Ary@ is going to meet him in books, it will be at Riverrun. But I don't think he would go to WF with her. Also like him, Mya Stone is introduced to Sansa story. Both Baratheon bastards befriended Stark girls in disguise.
Yes, it’s sad that they turned Gendry into this carricature. :(
The most interesting and significant thing about her friendship with Gendry is that they have genuine classist conflict. Which is why I also believe that they will likely meet again, and in a different universe with a time skip may have explored that with a vaguely romantic angle. As it is, it’s still waiting for another confrontation on the subject of class conflict and respect.
When Arya wants to escape Harrenhal, Gendry is not enthused. He is, in fact, deeply sarcastic.
"And if we did escape, where would we go?"
"Winterfell," she said at once. "I'd tell Mother how you helped me, and you could stay—"
"Would m'lady permit? Could I shoe your horses for you, and make swords for your lordly brothers?"
Sometimes he made her so angry. "You stop that!" "Why should I wager my feet for the chance to sweat in Winterfell in place of Harrenhal? You know old Ben Blackthumb? He came here as a boy. Smithed for Lady Whent and her father before her and his father before him, and even for Lord Lothston who held Harrenhal before the Whents. Now he smiths for Lord Tywin, and you know what he says? A sword's a sword, a helm's a helm, and if you reach in the fire you get burned, no matter who you're serving. Lucan's a fair enough master. I'll stay here." (ACOK, Arya IX)
She considers Gendry her pack, but Gendry has a very different outlook on life. She is a “wolf” because she has a house sigil, she is ultra highborn nobility, while for Gendry the lords are like the clouds that come and go far out of his reach. They are not the same.
That's not to say he's right in thinking that who rules makes zero difference to the smallfolk, but Arya is essentially viewing him as a transferable good. Her father allowed her to bring her swordmaster Syrio along to Winterfell, why can't she just bring along her blacksmith friend? His perspective is entirely secondary to her own, and his lack of agreement, his invocation of their status difference doesn’t cause her to respond with even a reasonable counter-argument. Just anger at his lack of cooperation.
This conflict is not resolved from either end.
One of their last exchanges before being separated features a return to the class divide and how it shapes their priorities.
Gendry joins the Brotherhood for very deliberate, political reasons. He chooses his own group, based on his own sense of justice. He willingly accepts the risk to his life, answers the question he asked a book earlier. Why wager his feet for the choice who to serve? Because it does matter. He has evolved in his priorities.
“At the hollow hill, what you said about being King Robert’s men, and brothers, I liked that. I liked that you gave the Hound a trial. Lord Bolton just hanged folk or took off their heads, and Lord Tywin and Ser Amory were the same. I’d sooner smith for you.”
Arya has no evolved yet at that point. All she hears is:
Arya bit her lip. He means to leave me too.
Her reaction is to lash out to cover up her hurt feelings, as she usually does:
As Arya was cinching her saddle girth, Gendry came up to say that he was sorry. She put a foot in the stirrup and swung up into her saddle, so she could look down on him instead of up. You could have made swords at Riverrun for my brother, she thought, but what she said was, “If you want to be some stupid outlaw knight and get hanged, why should I care? I’ll be at Riverrun, ransomed, with my brother.”
She dismisses his personal convictions and frames them in contrast to the privilege of serving her family, she clings to her own status as a highborn lady worth of ransom, from up on her horse.
This becomes an uncomfortable stance to take later. Their final exchange before her kidnapping is about this:
“Did the Lannisters kill the people who lived here?” Arya asked as she helped Anguy dry the horses. “No.” He pointed. (...)
“Who did it, then?” asked Gendry.
“Hoster Tully.” Notch was a stooped thin grey-haired man, born in these parts. “This was Lord Goodbrook’s village. When Riverrun declared for Robert, Goodbrook stayed loyal to the king, so Lord Tully came down on him with fire and sword. After the Trident, Goodbrook’s son made his peace with Robert and Lord Hoster, but that didn’t help the dead none.”
A silence fell. Gendry gave Arya a queer look, then turned away to brush his horse. (ASOS, Arya VIII)
That noble lord killing smallfolk is her grandfather. Her people. Killing people like Gendry. They are not the same.
Their relationship is begging to be revisited. To show Arya having grown beyond viewing lowborn people through the lens of her personal attachment or her own sense of justice, but within the context of her own privilege. To make room for their perspective even if it doesn’t include her. To actually be a lady, own her privilege and answer it with duty.
There is a theme of comparing their hands. “She has the hands of a blacksmith”. He laughs at her dainty hands and says she couldn’t wield a hammer, yet she has calluses from training with a sword. Swords are made by blacksmiths. Her weapon is made by his hands.
If Gendry represents the smallfolk, and Arya the nobility, then she needs to become worthy of carrying a sword, of being handed that privilege by people like him. Not because it’s “a shade more fun than needlework”, but because it represents power and justice and needs to be tempered with duty and responsibility.
Arya’s sword needs to serve the people, not herself.
Sadly, all the show saw in them was an opportunity to get Maisie naked. :(
