🎏
In Japan, there is a custom of decorating a streamer in the shape of a koi carp on a pole in the yard in May to wish for the healthy growth of boys.
This streamer is called a "Koinobori" (carp banner).
Tumblr media
The number and color of koinobori carp vary from period to period, and the different sizes of carp can mean parent and child or family.
There is also a legend that when a carp climbs a waterfall, it becomes a dragon.

Tamagotchi Smart Carp Streamers
Tumblr media
If you head over to the yard on your Tamagotchi Smart you might just seem some carp streamers! Koinobori, or carp streamers in Japanese are carp-shaped windsocks traditionally flown in Japan to celebrate Tango no sekku, a traditional event which is now designated as Children’s Day. Tango no sekku is observed on Friday, May 5th, 2023. These decorations appear every year around this time!

Welcome back to my series covering the real life origins of all non-fish aquatic Pokemon. Today we will be finishing generation I. See the first part of Generation I here and the fish of generation I here.
The Krabby line are crabs. There’s really not much more to them than that. Well Kingler having one claw larger than the other is a reference to several species of crab with that trait, perhaps most famously the fiddler crab.
Tumblr media
(image: a male fiddler crab)
Fiddler crabs, of which there are many species, have evolved a form of sexual dimorphism where the male has one claw that is much larger than the other. Males use their claws for sexual selection, both by waving the claw to attract females and fighting rival males. The crown of spikes on it can reference many spiny crabs, especially the king crab.
Tumblr media
(image: a weird looking hedgehog king crab)
Gigantmax Kingler’s massive size and long, spindly legs could be a reference to the Japanese spider crab, which has the longest legspan of any crab. The bubbles are there because crabs will blow bubbles over their gills while on land.
Starmie and Staryu are stylized starfish and much like real starfish, they are radially symmetrical and can regenerate any lost arms as long as the center is intact. Real starfish have such efficient regeneration that if you cut one in half, as long as enough of the central disc in intact, you will get two starfish.
Tumblr media
(image: a starfish)
Starmie and Staryu are heavily implied to be aliens, meaning they are likely also a reference to the common five-pointed star and shooting stars. Starfish have been compared to aliens before due to how strange they are to our vertebrate-centered view of life. Most starfish have five arms like Staryu, but a few have more, like Starmie (they still have 5 radial body segments, just more than one arm per segment. The line’s tendency to swim by rapidly rotating their bodies and their good speed stats could reference propellers and shuriken. The gems flashing, acting as their hearts, and firing beam attacks may all reference the flashing chest-mounted gems found in the Ultraman series.
I covered Magikarp in my fish posts, but didn’t cover Gyarados then as I don’t think it’s a fish. I think it’s a combination sea serpent and eastern dragon. It has the serpentine, limbless shape of sea serpents and the whiskers and carp connection of dragons. Eastern dragons are generally considered benevolent, but can be extremely dangerous when angered. They can also typically fly despite being wingless, fitting Gyarados having the flying type and actually flying around the sky in Legends: Arceus. Eastern dragons are often depited as having long barbels like those of carp and catfish.
Tumblr media
(image: a depiction of a Chinese dragon)
Gyarados evolving from Magikarp is a reference to a Chinese legend where a carp that jumps over a waterfall will turn into a dragon. If Gyarados has the appearance of an eastern dragon, it has the violent temperament of a western dragon. It’s violent and easily angered temperament is similar to legends of sea monsters attacking and destroying ships. Side note: Gyarados’s English name was originally going to be Skulkraken, which is one of the most metal things I’ve ever heard. Mega Gyarados looks a lot like carp streamers, which makes it amusing that the form based on a wind sock loses the flying type.
Tumblr media
(image: a bunch of carp streamers)
Lapras is one of my favorite Pokemon of all time and its origin is suitably interesting. It’s based on famous lake cryptids like the Loch Ness monster, which are often depicted as looking like outdated reconstructions of plesiosaurs. Plesiosaurs were marine reptiles that coexisted with dinosaurs, but were not dinosaurs themselves. The most famous plesiosaurs, which Lapras is based on, had long necks.
Tumblr media
(image: a fossil reconstruction of Plesiosaurus)
Outdated reconstructions of plesiosaurs, often depicted them as being able to hold their necks out of the water in what is often described as a swan neck pose, much like Lapras’s neck. We now know that their necks were not nearly flexible enough to do that. I initially thought that Lapras’s shell was a reference to sea turtles, but it turns out it comes from the placodonts, close relatives to plesiosaurs who had bony plates on their backs that in some species developed to look a lot like turtle shells.
Tumblr media
(image: a fossil reconstruction of a turtle-like placodont)
Some placodonts also had bony protrusions on their skulls, much like Lapras’s horn. Lapras’s neck and rideability could also reference the mastheads of Viking longships. Lapras being very intelligent and singing is a clear reference to whales. In early generations, Lapras was endangered due to overhunting, which could reference species like the right whale, who were badly overhunted and have never fully recovered. Gigantamax Lapras having that shell shape and sheet music lines makes me think it’s a reference to that shell-looking musical instrument from the 2nd movie.
Alright, we’re talking about Vaporeon now, so I expect you to be normal about this, ok? Like the other Eevees, Vaporeon is a mishmash of various animals. Like Eevee, it has dog, cat, and fox traits, but it also adds dolphin and fish-like traits. We actually have the word of one of the designers, who says it was designed with mermaids in mind, hence the combination of mammal and fish traits. It may also represent transitional forms between land-dwelling animals and cetaceans, such as Remingtonocetus or Kutchicetus.
Tumblr media
(image: peleoart of Kutchicetus by Nobu Tamura)
The fringe around its neck is the aquatic form of Eevee’s neck ruff, but also makes it look like a sea-lion. No, not the real animals, but a lion mermaid used as a heraldic symbol.
Tumblr media
(Image: a sea-lion)
It may also be one big catfish pun. Vaporeon’s ability to turn into water could reference mythical water spirits like naiads.
Omanyte and Omastar are based on ammonites, prehistoric shelled cephalopods that look very similar to, but are not closely related to, the modern nautilus.
Tumblr media
(Image: paleoart of an ammonite. source)
Like the nautilus, ammonites could float in the water column using gas-filled chambers in the shell, contrasting the Omanyte line, who are usually depicted as bottom-dwellers. Ammonites would have had the shell opening pointed horizontally, with the tentacles used for grabbing food and a siphon used for propulsion. The Omanyte line instead has the shell opening down and the tentacles used to crawl around. Like any proper cephalopod, Omastar has a powerful beak that it uses to eat. Ammonites first evolved in the Devonian period and made it all the way to the end of the Cretaceous, where they met their end along with the non-avian dinosaurs.
Kabuto is a mix of the horseshoe crab and trilobites. Horseshoe crabs (which you can read about here) are still around now, but they are considered living fossils (a misleading term as the species alive today are not the same as fossil species). Kabuto looks like the carapace of a horseshoe crab, minus the second body segment and tail.
Tumblr media
(image: a horseshoe crab)
Horseshoe crabs also have two large eyes on the top of the shell looking up, just like the two dots on Kabuto, and more eyes on the underside looking down. Trilobites had segmented bodies while Kabuto doesn’t. Upon evolving, it takes on some major praying mantis inspiration, but at the same time, it looks a bit more like a triobite. Its head looks like a cephalon of a trilobite, possibly one of the genus Cheirurus, which had some large spikes on the cephalon.
Tumblr media
(image a trilobite fossil)
The body is segmented like a trilobites. Kabutops also takes inspiration from eurypterids, relatives of horseshoe crabs that had segmented bodies and large limbs used for hunting or swimming.
Tumblr media
(image: a eurypterid fossil)
Kabutops’s head also looks a bit like a samurai helmet (and the Japanese word for helmet is “kabuto”), and that combined with its sword-like limbs may give it some samurai influence.
Finishing out gen I is the Dratini line, which serve as counterparts to Gyarados. They are also based on a combination of sea serpents and eastern dragons, but while Gyarados is destructive and violent, the Dratini line are reclusive and gentle. Like many eastern dragon myths Dreatini and Dragonair live underwater and/or behind waterfalls and Dragonair has weather control abilities. Dragonite switches to a western dragon, with 4 limbs and wings, but still retains some eastern dragon traits with its serpentine body, ability to live underwater, antennae that look a lot like barbels, and generally gentle behavior. Interestingly, Gyarados has the eastern dragon look but western dragon behavior while Dragonite has the western dragon look and eastern dragon behavior.
Next time, I'll cover the aquatic Pokémon from generation II. In the future I probably wont have to split generations up like this as the other gens don't have as many aquatic mons to cover

For My Darling Daughter
Words could not express the joy Xiwangmu felt reuniting with her daughter; each moment they spent with one another filled her heart with pure happiness.  Such a deeply intimate feeling of love and affection for her child brought with it another meaningful gift on this day.  So when Davina arrived at the Golden Palace on the day of the feast, the empress pulled her daughter aside for a private moment in her office where she presented the young woman with a box adorned with deep red silk and fastened with golden knots.
Xiwangmu then explained the contents had been created by Tsukuyomi, an original work of art by the Japanese god of the moon himself.  Within the box, a beautiful necklace of tear-shaped pendants studded with diamonds, radiating with an ethereal resplendence reminiscent of stars as though they had been plucked from the night sky.  She explained as the divine jeweler had to her, that the necklace was inspired by traditional carp streamers that celebrate the happiness of children. The teardrops can represent scales in a more explicit context, but also the teardrops of a tender, loving mother; tears of joy when a child is born and tears of sadness and worry when a child falls ill or is in distress.  She did hope her daughter liked the gift and that, perhaps, Davina may someday pass it on to her own daughter as a new family heirloom.
-----------------------
Davina had brought a larger clutch than she had planned as she decided it was best to bring her mother’s present to give before the feast. She knew her mother had been busy between preparing for the feast, her role as director, and all she had done for the island to prepare for such a lovely holiday. So, while she knew her mother would never find her a burden, Davina had not wanted to add another added task onto the goddess’s heavy plate.
So when her mother wanted some time in private, she was thrilled. It would be the perfect moment. However, she had not even stopped to think that the goddess would have something for her. The dutiful daughter listened to her mother’s explanation as she opened the box. What a beautiful necklace! Her mother had definitely went above and beyond, and the meaning behind it threatened to pull tears in the corners of her eyes. This was the type of affection she had craved so desperately for. Clutching it tightly, she took a deep breath of air to stabilize her emotions. She had spent way too much time making herself look pretty for her mother’s event. With care, Davina leaned toward her mother, pressing a kiss on the other’s cheek. Despite her crimson red lips, that tint was going no where.
“Thank you so much, momma.” She said, fully of genuine gratitude. It was the best gift she could have asked for. Looking over it once more, a sudden thought came to mind, gasping softly. Davina forgot that quick she too wanted to get her mother a gift, and quick fingers stumbled to open the clasps of her clutch that hung on her hip. It was nothing to compare to what her mother gave her, but it still had a meaning too.
So, Davina handed over a beautiful embroidered phone case bag that held jade amulet of a phoenix that connected with the dragon amulet that she had attached to her purse and would ultimately add as a staple in her daily wear. Dragon, her year of the zodiac. And her mother, regal with the strength and power like that of a phoenix. Together, they would live in harmony. Two sides of one whole heart. But, Davina was not elegant enough to explain it to her mother, especially with already being emotional from their gift.
Instead, Davina could only speak one valid fact. “I love you, ma. Like lots and lots.”

✨🥥🎏Kanto Rival Pokemon Redesigns🎏🥥✨ Isn't it fun that Blue, your rival, always makes sure to have a balanced team based around your starter? Same three Pokemon, switching one with his starters. Say hello to the three options he has, as Growlithe, Exeggcute and Magikarp join the line-up!! Growlithe is now another species of dogs, a dachshund to be precise!! Already hinting towards its evolution, the design is slender and agile, bit with short legs. The "lithe" part in Growlithe is derived from another term for slender, fitting the lil Weiner Hound aesthetic. Its tongue is extremely hot and sparks can be seen flying off of it. Exeggcute is now more of a coconut, I might move from my etymology design rule because that'll become really dark, really fast. Its a coconut in its germination stage, creating an antenna to send out psychic energy. The two critters in the coconut shell produce the psychic energy and by combining their skills they can fend of attackers with ease. Magikarp is a carp, unexpected, I know. Now taking more after "Koinobori", streamers shaped like carp, to hint more towards its final evolution. It also looks ready to snap after a long battle upstream!! These will be the last for a lil while, first I'm gonna try my hardest to graduate!! I got a good feeling, but first I wanna hear it before I get to confident .w.;; 54/151

“Nemi~” they would say his adorable nickname in a sing song type tone every time before he’d leave just for the sake of making him blush
They would always neatly pack him plenty of the sweets and foods he wouldn’t openly admit that he loved like the ohagi they would shape as cute little bunnies
Y/n would gently caress his face and look him in the eye lovingly, he’d have a gentle blush on his cheeks and soft smile as he felt their embrace
“Ah! I have something else for you, close your eyes!” They’d say excitedly holding something in their hands
“Can’t you just give it to me like this?” He’d say a bit annoyed but follows along
“No, because it’s a surprise,” they’d say with a slight pout that made his heart warm
The way they would gently take a hold of his hand and place something cold and metallic
“Tada~!” They’d cheer excitedly as they watched him open his eyes and examine the charm of an adorable fluffy white dog
“I made it just for you! I know it’s not much but I hope y-“ he’d cute them off with a kiss, a gentle blush on their face as they melted in it before he pulled away

“Giyu, I know you really don’t like when I do all this for you, but I just want you to have what you need or could want in that moment,” they would speak softly and a bit embarrassed
“And I have one last thing for you before you go!” A gentle blush on their cheeks, “Close your eyes!!”
He would hesitantly do so but a light blush be painted on his cheeks as he felt them touch his hand and gently place something on it
“Tada~!” They’d cheer softly as they watched him examine the wooden charm of a salmon, his favorite thing to eat
“Urokodaki-San taught me his carving technique when he took me in and I figured maybe you’d like it,” they fiddled with their fingers as they spoke
“I know it’s not much but I hope it brings you good luck and strength like those carp streamers we saw a while back,” they’d smile gently at him
Giyu would pull them into an embrace, they would hear his rapidly beating heart as he would kiss their forehead before he would kiss their lips

May 5th is Children's Day (こどもの日 or kodomo no hi) in Japan! This day celebrates the health and growth of children as well as expressing gratitude to mothers and celebrating the family as a whole.
In the past, Children's Day was known as 端午の節句 (tango no sekku), which a seasonal festival at the beginning of the fifth month. The character for "go" sounds like the word for "five" and thus the celebration occurs on the fifth day of the fifth month. The celebration originally was for the sons of the family (Girl's Day or Hinamatsuri ひな祭り is on March 3rd), praying for them to grow healthy and strong. Thus, the decorations and celebrations for this festival center around samurai even though today it celebrates all children.
Tumblr media
Decorations
Carp streamers or koinobori (鯉のぼり) are flown to pray for the health of children in the family. In the past, they were flown for the sons of the family, but now they represent the parents and all children in the family. The red koi (carp) traditionally represented the oldest son, while the blue and other colors represent the younger sons. Today, the black carp represents the father, the red or pink carp represents the mother, and blue, green, and orange carp represent the children.
Tumblr media
Families often display samurai armor, either the full set or just the headpiece, along with a bow and quiver of arrows and a katana. These symbolize strength and vitality. This display is usually only set up in families with boys (families with girls set up doll displays in March).
Tumblr media
Kintaro (金太郎) is a popular folk tale about a young boy who was raised in the mountains and befriended the animals who lived there. He was an active, super strong little boy who carried a hatchet and wore only a bib with the character for gold (kin 金) on it. His adventures include fighting monsters and demons, sumo wrestling with bears (and winning!), and helping woodcutters to fell trees. Kintaro is based on a real person who lived during the Heian, who as an adult became a personal retainer to a samurai due to his impressive strength. It is easy to see why this folk hero is a prominent figure in Children's Day, and in addition to decorations featuring Kintaro, often young boys are dressed in his signature "kin" bib for photos.
Tumblr media
Food
Children's Day food centers around symbols of strength. Oak trees (kashiwa) are strong and solid and thus they fortify the children who eat their leaves. Mochi cakes (glutinous rice cakes) filled with red bean paste cooked and wrapped with oak leaves are called 柏餅 kashiwa mochi. Glutinous rice wrapped in an iris or bamboo leaf in a long cylindrical shape are called ちまき chimaki. Another Children's Day non-food tradition is for boys to soak in a bath of iris leaves and roots (called 菖蒲湯 shoubuyu) which prevents illness and misfortune. A competition is also called shoubu (written as 勝負) and thus this bathing was used in the Kamakura era to pray for samurai to win battles.
Song
There is a song called 鯉のぼりの歌 Koinobori no Uta (The Carp Streamer Song) which is short and simple.
Japanese
やね より たかい こいのぼり おおきい まごい は おとうさん ちいさい ひごい は こどもたち おもしろそうに およいでる
Romanized
Yane yori takai koinobori
Ookii magoi wa otoosan
Chiisai higoi wa kodomo tachi
Omoshirosoo ni oyoideru
English
Carp streamers are higher than the roof
The biggest carp is the father
The small carp are children
Enjoying swimming in the sky
Here is an animated video with the lyrics in Japanese, and here is a video montage of Children's Day decorations, plus a bonus song called せいくらべ Sei Kurabe (Comparing Heights).

Part two
"So... You don't mind me like- being here? You'd be the first then..." He said gently.
"Dude, you're like- a tiny beetle man." He said with a laugh. "Like, c'mon, that's so cool. Why would I be upset with you being around?" He said with a grin.
Tubbo blinked, a little shocked.
"You think I'm cool boss man?" He asked gently. A human had never thought he was cool... Especially since the most positive reaction he ever got from a human was being sprayed with air freshener. It didn't hurt him, but he smelt like chemicals for a good few days. Not overly pleasant honestly. But hey, this one seemed alright. "Huh. Never got that before."
Ranboo gave a light chuckle, leaning back within his pastel chair, smiling beneath that mask of his. "So what are you? I can tell you're like, somewhat a beetle. But the rest of you looks pretty human." The creature looked, odd. He had a human build, but had a long elytra covering two tinted dragonfly wings, and long antennae protruding from his forehead that angled at the tips. His eyes were unique as well, irises an amber tone and hexagonal shaped, with large black pupils in the center. The only other small detail Ranboo could notice was little hooks on their forearms and little nodes on each side of his mouth, presumably for attacking.
The beetle gave a huff. "First of all- could at least ask my name."
"Well. What's your name?"
"Toby, but you can call me Tubbo. And for your other questions, I'm basically a pixie, except not as magical as you'd think. I'm part Capri.. Carp- caper-.. Goat beetle thing-" he stammered out. Smooth.
"A Capricorn beetle?..."
"Yes! That's the one-" he said with a sigh. "Now. My turn for the questions- your name, what the hell you do, how long did you notice me. And also, what's with the disguise??? From what I've seen, you live alone. So I don't see a reason to hide it, unless you're just that ugly underneath." He said smugly.
"... You're totally a spy- Anyways! The names Mark, but you can call me Ranboo, Boo, whatever really. I'm a streamer, which in short, millions of people know me for being funny, but nobody knows me for like- living here. And I saw you here for like, 20 minutes. Figured I'd just leave you be though. And for the disguise, well." He shrugged. "I just, like it."
"I'm not a spy!!!"
Ranboo laughed happily, flopping back and shaking his head a little bit. He could tell he and tubbo were going to get on well.

Suidō Bridge and Surugadai, Utagawa Hiroshige, 1857, intercalary 5th month, Minneapolis Institute of Art: Japanese and Korean Art
The carp-shaped streamers, white flags, and red wind cones shown here flying above gray roof tiles are decorations associated with celebrations on the fifth day of the fifth month. Originating in China, Tango festival was introduced to Japan in the eighth century as a day to wish for the good health over the coming summer months. Under Japan's first samurai regime in the fourteenth century, the festival was expanded to include wishes for the strength and good fortune of boys and young men-the future warriors of the country. Carp-shaped streamers, koi-nobori in Japanese, symbolize the great potential of male children because ancient Chinese believed that strong carp that swam upstream against the strong current turned into dragons. In this print, the square flags are emblazoned with images of Shøki, a Chinese scholar who vowed to rid the realm of evil. Thus, Shøki, became an emblem of male determination and courage. Size: 13 1/4 × 8 11/16 in. (33.7 × 22.1 cm) (image) 14 9/16 × 9 3/4 in. (37 × 24.8 cm) (sheet, vertical ōban) 19 × 15 × 1 1/2 in. (48.26 × 38.1 × 3.81 cm) (outer frame) Medium: Woodblock print (nishiki-e); ink and color on paper
