SDC Month - June 2022 - Sunday #3

You know the drill by now — if this kind of post isn't something you like, feel free to leave and come back tomorrow for the next Monday installment.

(Again, cut for content and potential spoilers.)

Today we have a classic "unpopular opinion" sort of topic… that's right, everyone's favourite, ships! (As in romantic ships, not literal ones. Sorry, baran, you get to sit this one out.) Namely: Molochite/Osidian (aka Osidite) is a more compelling ship than Carnelian/Osidian (aka Carnidian).

(Also, just a note, this will be more of a "explaining why I like the former" rather than "comparing the two" post… I mean, Carnidian is one of the main canon ships, so I expect SDC fans to be familiar with it, and I really didn't want this post getting too long. Sorry, Carnidian.)

I know, I know, it's probably some sort of blasphemy to prefer a non-canon ship to a canon one (or maybe not, a lot might depend on whether this is a truly unpopular opinion or not). But aren't ships one of the most subjective topics in existence, after all?

A disclaimer: much like when it comes to Aurum as a character, I'm not saying Carnidian is a bad ship, I simply prefer Osidite. Again, just a matter of preference, but I tend to be much fonder of ships where the characters have a long history together than whirlwind romances, which ends up being a point in Osidite's favour.

And what a history, right? While it's understandable Osidite will be off-putting to many due to the incest factor (though in all fairness, anyone who has a problem with this is most likely going to feel the same way about Carnidian), it really can't be denied their dynamic has the potential to be extremely interesting and complex. Two brothers, one of which is fated to die at the other's Apotheosis… now add to that all the resentment and tension deriving from their respective, clashing personalities and consider how the introduction of an underlying attraction (even if only one-sided) would impact that. Would this relationship be remotely healthy in any sense? Absolutely not. But would it be fascinating to explore? Absolutely. Just imagine Osidian struggling with his attraction for the brother he still despises and hates, alongside all the other conflicting feelings he is experiencing on the eve of the election. Just picture Molochite hoping deep down that Osidian had survived the assassination attempt at the end of The Chosen, despite knowing it would only ever end in tragedy.

Also, one last thing that I just have to mention in this post is the fact that the second edition gave us… not quite confirmation of this ship, but new content that was certainly suggestive. This is something else that is very subjective, but I would argue that at the very least, it might take the possibility of Osidite beyond a crack ship of sorts. I mean, when we have lines such as:

"Why do you pout, my dear?"

You might at least find yourself wondering. Right?

Carnelian & Osidian

today is the anniversary of the day i finished TSD for the first time in 2017 (yeah, i read the entire thing in like 3 days, then cried about it on my instagram for weeks), and also the last day of SDC month! time really flies when you’re having the time of your life （＾∇＾）

that said, i really wish i could’ve contributed more this this, alas… but maybe it just means there’s more ideas for December 🤌

there’s this scene in TSD where Carnelian & Flue are talking at a fireside and Osidian interrupts them by pushing them aside and between them like a goddess of cockblocking………… this isn’t that scene, but love that so it had to be mentioned

also, i was conflicted if i should draw Flue here because of obvious reasons, but ultimately decided against it, because Carnidian were the most important element of the SDC for me when i first read the series, so i wanted to highlight them
