Recuperation of the leftist/conservationist aesthetic in mass media

Recuperation in simple terms is commodification of cultural elements by corporate industries, elements that are rooted in social cause activism. This manifests in different forms like, a well-known Indian (a colonized country) traditional maximalism brand SABYASACHI collaborating with an international fast fashion brand Hennes & Mauritz (a Swedish-European brand) for profit thus commodifying sentimentality of Indian culture through most unethical means possible (Mahajan, Fashion and law journal, 2021). 

Today I will talk about more subversively insidious affectations of recouperation, the annexation of leftist graphic design aesthetic for pleasure and profit.

Let’s look at the history of minimalist design. It originated in the post-modern era, where the artist moved from feudalistic expression of maximalist picturesque paintings to surrealist/Bauhaus/dada art movements that were rooted in political activism and raising awareness about social issues (Novin, 2010). Now minimalism has become its own brand by with the help of multinational companies adopting the style and making a disingenuous use of the aesthetic to attract consumers and make some profit (Steinhauer, 2020) as it is widely known that leftist ideas always win the culture war (Dollinger, 2007) so the right wing has to find a way to own it, commodify it and capitalize it.

Second is dreamy muted gradient graphic design aesthetic. This aesthetic was created in the post-modern era by the American rebels and the hippies as well who supported the causes like LGBTQ+ rights, AIDS medication, The Rainbow coalition etc. and now it has become #1 graphic design trend for companies to recreate to make their brand look “cool” and pro those social cause (Olsen, 2021).

We can see more of this example, like Amazon.com a brand that is now infamously known for mistreating its labor organization…the result of which was Christian Small standing in the public eye as a leader of contemporary American labor union (Sainato, 2020) also SELLS Che Guevara T-shirts and merchandise to people. This current situation just made me feel like recuperation is fraudulent marketing and detournement a defamation joke. A subtle difference between a harmful and harmless joke.

Today I discovered WWE is bringing back Halloween Havoc and that two of my favorite wrestlers, Toni Storm & Rhea Ripley, will be involved.  My Satellite Of Love jumpsuit arrived and it fits beautifully.  I just purchased the magazine containing the only Cardula story I haven’t read.  The magazine should arrive in time for Halloween.  Today is one of the greatest days ever.  Thank you.

The Bauhaus Movement, 1919 to Present Day...

Looking for some style inspiration, so I’m going to look at the Bauhaus movement.

The history of the Bauhaus Movement?

The Bauhaus movement has some pretty cool historic ties. After the German defeat of WWI, liberal artists and intellectuals were inspired to bring about a radical upsurge of experimentation. Many left-wing Germans found themselves inspired by constructivism, an artistic and architectural philosophy developed in Russian around 1919 when the new Soviet government was being developed after the 1917 Revolution. Constructivists saw all art and design as political and Russia as their canvas. Walter Gropius however, rejected this political stance and maintained that the Bauhaus movement was totally apolitical.

Walter Gropius was an architect that founded the Bauhaus movement. He wanted to create was called a Gesamtkunstwerk, meaning a comprehensive artwork where all forms of art could be brought together. Three Bauhaus schools were set up in Germany in; Berlin, Dessau, and Weimar. They were later closed under Nazi pressure, as the Bauhaus movement had been portrayed by many as the centre for communist ideals.

Jenny Farrell writes; 

“The name Bauhaus plays on the German word Bauhütte (construction/building hut)—the workshop where the builders of the great medieval cathedrals worked together: quarrymen, plasterers, mortar-makers, stone-cutters, masons, and others. Here there were no strict dividing lines between artists and craftsmen, and the builders were both in one. This was an important concept for the Bauhaus school. As the word Hütte means hut, the term was modernized to Haus (house). In this way, the term Bauhaus refers to a workshop, the sense of community and the equality of art and craft under the guidance of architecture, as cultivated in medieval cathedral workshops. Painting, sculpture, applied art, music and dance were to combine in the building of the future.”

What defines the Bauhaus style?

The Bauhaus movement had a huge influence on contemporary and modern art and is often characterised as a combination of the 19th century arts and crafts movement and modernism. According to the Tate it “aim[ed] to bring art back into contact with everyday life.” Typically Bauhaus designs have very little ornamentation and a focus on balanced forms and abstract shapes. They are distinctive in their colour palette with the strong emphasis on primary colours, or blacks and whites teamed with a single colour like red or blue. The often used collage graphics like figures or isolated human features, such as, hands, eyes, etc giving them a surrealist type feel. They abandon formal grids and traditional layouts for more haphazard and anarchic girdless designs.

Meuterei auf hoher See - Report

Es wird Zeit für eine Zusammenfassung von der Lese-Erfahrung des ersten Buches meines kleinen Projektes. Da es die erste ist, wird es wohl noch eine Weile dauern, bis ich das Format besser visualisiert habe, aber wir arbeiten erstmal mit dem, was wir momentan haben. Einige Unter-Kategorien bekommen, nachdem ich dann ein paar mehr Bücher gelesen habe, dann hoffentlich noch ihre eigenen ausführlicheren Posts.

Inhaltsangabe (für die, die nicht alle Fälle auf Sofortabruf im Kopf haben): Die drei ??? wollen eigentlich einen Bergurlaub machen, der fällt aber ins Wasser (ha!). Durch Bobs Vater und einer mysteriösen Grippe bekommen sie spontan drei Plätze in der Crew eines Forschungsbootes. Das Vorhaben ist Vulkanquellen auf dem Meeresboden mit einem U-Boot zu untersuchen. Ein Teil der Crew übernimmt auf hoher See dann die Führung des Bootes, weil der Anführer ein U-Boot braucht, um nach Sauriern in der Tiefsee zu suchen. Bei dieser Aktion geht das U-Boot kaputt und Justus sitzt mit zwei anderen Charakteren auf dem Meeresboden fest. Statt Sauriern finden sie leuchtende Riesenkraken, werden anschließend gerettet und derjenige, der das U-Boot sabotiert hatte, wird festgenommen. 

Bewertung des Buches: Eine sehr solider Anfang für dieses Projekt. Mit Glück um das Thema “Indianer-Schatz” herumgekommen und stattdessen bei Meeres-Dinos gelandet. Zu der problematischen Angewohnheit indigene Völker und deren Angehörige als Zierwerk und Requisiten zu benutzen, kommen wir bei diesen Büchern noch früh genug. Ansonsten ansprechend für mein 12jähriges-Ich, weil Peter fast ertrinkt, Bob in einem kleinen Autounfall verwickelt war und Justus fast in einem U-Boot vom Meer verschlungen wird. Ich sage nur, h/c-fics waren für mich damals die Spitze der Literatur. Der Handlungsort und die Protagonisten sind durch das Boot als Schauplatz begrenzt, Verwirrung hält sich also in Grenzen. Selbst Enrique, die einzige nicht komplett US-amerikanisch gekennzeichnete Person, hat dankenswerter Weise keinen be- bzw. geschriebenen Akzent und fällt maximal durch ein ‘Amigos’ und Paella seiner europäischen Tante Gabi auf.

Wtf-Moment des Buches:  Der Dino-Prof bekommt keine Bestrafung am Ende? Er hat die vorherige Crew absichtlich mit Grippe angesteckt, Leute mit einem Revolver bedroht, sie in ihre Kabinen gesperrt und das Boot gekapert, aber am Ende sind alle cool mit ihm.

#Misandrie-Talk: Nun, es gibt zwei nicht-männliche Charaktere in diesem Buch (es sei denn man zählt die Riesen-Kraken dazu, weil wir über deren Geschlechtsidentifikation nichts wissen, ich vote für ‘all hail our lesbian kraken queens’): Tante Mathilda und Carol Ford. Tante Mathilda übergehen wir mal, sie verdient irgendwann ihren ganz eigenen Sonderpost. Carol Ford arbeitet beim Fernsehen und dreht einen Dokumentarfilm über die Forschungsreise (komplett alleine weil sie eine strong independent woman ist und niemanden für Ton oder dergleichen braucht). Sie ist der Grund, warum die drei ??? überhaupt an Bord sind und sitzt später mit Justus und dem Dino-Professor im U-Boot fest. Positiv an ihrem Charakter ist, dass sie kompetent in ihrem Job zu sein scheint, sie ist sympatisch und alles, was wir über ihr äußeres Erscheinungsbild erfahren, ist, dass sie jung ist und Herren-Pyjamas trägt (woke af ✊). Negativ ist, dass sie komplett irrelevant für die Story ist. Sie lädt die drei aufs Boot ein, das hätte aber auch Käpt’n Jason machen können, und sie filmt nachher die Riesen-Kraken, was auch jeder andere oder das U-Boot selbst hätte machen können. Von den neun Leuten auf dem Boot ist sie die einzige nicht männliche, aber ein großer Part steht ihr nirgendwo zu noch hat sie irgendwelche bemerkenswerten Charakterzüge. Sie ist einfach nur nett und snackt gern um Mitternacht. Sehr schade.

Body Image???: Dies ist der Part, wo ich mir anschauen möchte, wie Körper insbesondere Justus’ im Text behandelt werden. Die drei ???-Geschichten haben da keinen besonders guten Track-Record, etwas was mich in meiner Kindheit schon gestört hat, weil ich diese Ansichten oft auf meinen eigenen Körper übertragen habe. Dieses Buch ist im Gegensatz zu anderen milde, aber hat doch zwei unschöne Momente. Der erste ist, als Justus durch Seekrankheit sich übergebend auf der Toilette hängt und das ganze mit einem Diät-Witz gedanklich kommentiert. Sowas ist, wenn man bedenkt, wie häufig Kinder und Jugendliche von Essstörungen betroffen sind, einfach nur extrem hässlicher Humor. Der zweite ist, dass, während es so aussieht, als würden Justus und die anderen im U-Boot ihrem sicheren Tod entgegen gehen, Justus ständig daran denken muss, wie hungrig er ist. Ebenfalls wahrscheinlich ein Versuch des Humors, aber für mich ist der Witz von ‘bekannter übergewichtiger Charakter denkt immer nur ans Essen, auch wenn es brenzlig wird haha’ einfach zu arm.

Gimmick-Zähler:

Kartendrop: 1 - Auf einem Schiff kann man leider nicht andauernd seine Visitenkarte zücken. Count Cardula muss auf ein anderes Mal hoffen.

Profanität: 1 - Wir bekommen ein ‘Scheiße’ und das gleich auf der zweiten Seite! Hooo boy!

Fragezeichen-Vortrag: 0 - Justus erklärt niemanden, für was das Fragezeichen steht! Ist das überhaupt noch ein ‘Die drei ???’ Buch??

Dinos: 0 - Enttäuschend. Da helfen die leuchtenden lesbian queens Riesen-Kraken auch nur wenig.
