Carcel Devereaux
Tumblr media
Age: 27
Birthdate: October 28th
Pronouns: They/Them
Height: 190.5 cm/ 6’3
Weight: 84.8 kg
Appearance: Light beige skin with rough callouses on the hands and a few old wounds on the knuckles. Short black hair that is slowly being grown out and deep green eyes. Very tall in height, lean build from time working out at the gym with broad shoulders. Wears something smart during work, normally a pressed shirt and trousers of some kind. Outside of work, prefers to wear something subdued like a jacket with a shirt and jeans.
Noticeable Attributes: Tattoos on hips and right thigh, eyebrow and ear piercings, a cut through lip
Default Expression: Irritated
Character Traits: Intimidating, Impulsive, Sarcastic, Stoic, Stubborn
Description:
An excerpt from a psychological and general evaluation of Field Agent Santiago by Dr. Elodie Strong, information including previous psychological educational, and physical reports sourced from Agency archives.
Learning more about Carcel Devereaux has proven to be rather difficult since they aren’t very forthcoming about themselves and treat those in authority with hostility. The same pattern of behavior has persisted back into their rebellious youth as well if you were to look at their school and criminal records. It also has proven to make them rather difficult to work with since they tend to be independent and bend the rules often.
Carcel’s relationship with their mother is just as poor as their people skills, tense, if I were to put a word to it. Though the recent revelation has made the detective a little more forgiving of their mother. On top of that, they often butt heads with Commanding Agent du Mortain during missions, yet ironically, the two are the closest out of any member of Unit Bravo.
Regardless of the troubles in Devereaux’s interpersonal relationships, the detective has shown that they are capable of tolerating unwanted social interactions. The primary example of this is their ability to deal with “Bobby” Marks even considering their previous romantic relationship with the journalist and the detective’s adamantly stated hatred of their ex.
What truly makes Carcel Devereaux a valuable asset to Unit Bravo though, outside of their mutation, is their combat prowess and deductive abilities. As they have chosen to specialize and train in supernatural combat, the detective has only grown as a fighter- a trait needed for a career working with the Agency.
This resilience they exhibit has also helped Carcel recover from their kidnapping, the detective showing little signs of trauma from the ordeal. Their tendency to process information with their mind and think things through logically, if for a short period of time, has also been a great aid to them in this regard as well.
With all this in mind, I can confidently clear them for duty with Unit Bravo, though I might suggest bringing Solomon Verda aboard might help make Carcel more comfortable working with the Agency. It’s not as if the doctor does not already know of the supernatural anyway.

Luis Quintanilla in the Model Jail (Carcel Modelo) of Madrid in 1934. The suede jacket he's wearing was given to him by Hemingway.
On the night of October 5, 1934, Quintanilla was arrested in his studio for being a member of the Revolutionary Committee which intended to oust the Spanish government. He was taken to Madrid's Model Jail (Carcel Modelo) where along with a sizeable group of politicians, intellectuals, and workers he was locked up to await trial. Though more sympathetically than actively involved, he had indeed hosted a large group of revolutionaries who were awaiting the moment when they would go out onto the streets to oust the central government: though when the police arrived he vigorously protested that they had gathered in his studio merely to look at art.
As has happened when other prominent artists have found themselves in jail, the world's intellectual community immediately rallied to his aid. Andre Malraux organized the protests and circulated the petitions in France. Lady Margo Asquith, the wife of the former Prime Minister, did the same in England and so did Ernest Hemingway and John Dos Passos in the United States. The petitions and protests didn't get Quintanilla out of jail but did result in allowing him to continue to work.
Because the light in jail wasn't good enough to paint in he drew his fellow prisoners instead. And what a collection of extraordinary personalities emerges out of these ancient drawings: poets, working men, students, intellectuals, and national leaders.

Blog Assignment #1
I vividly remember when I first watched Get Out. I am one of those people who deliberately not watches the trailers for movies- I quite like the surprise I'm in for when the lights dim in the theater. The only thing I was aware of was that it was directed by Jordan Peele and that it was a horror movie. That's all I needed to know. Being a horror fan myself, I’m familiar with how these types of movies play out. So, you can imagine how shocked and impressed I was with how Get Out made me feel. While the movie was clear that it was in the horror genre with the first scene where Andre got kidnapped, I got a sense of dread the more I watched the movie.
During Professor Due’s Thursday lecture, she described her theory on the moneypaw method. One of the points she made was that the movie doesn't show explicit violence, especially towards the black characters. And even though the movie itself wasn't violent in a physical sense, other than what the white family does to these black people that come to their home, it was horrific in other ways. While it was quite easy to pick up the microaggressions coming from Rose’s family, the other points, the deeper ones, the movie was trying to make were a little less clear. I really had to sit in my room after watching, to play out the scenes in the movie to try to make sense of everything. I am not black, and I don't claim to know how it feels to be black in America, but I have been the “other” in the room before. I am a Mexican woman who grew up in a predominantly white neighborhood. I know just a little of what it feels like to be the only “other” in the room. Microaggressions like “your English is really good for a Mexican” or others have literally questioned my legal status, even when I was a child and didn't know what that meant. Those microaggressions that Chris experienced in the movie, I have experienced my own in different situations, those that have made me feel uncomfortable and not trusting of the other people in the room.
I think the movie is one of the greatest horror movies made. Not because it was explicitly scary, even though it did have some little jumpscares, but rather it made me feel uneasy and dreadful about what would happen next. It made me feel dread because Peele captured what was happening at the time in America. That white supremacy was coming out of its cave and was paraded around proudly during the Trump era. And it's not just exclusive to the Trump era, but rather things that black people have been experiencing for ages. The racism, the appropriation and coveting of black bodies, and how white people love everything that black people have, their bodies, their strength, their appearance, but they don't love the person. Hence, why Rose’s family was persevering the bodies of these black people but not their minds.
I also thought the sunken place was an interesting avenue to take. When I first saw the movie, I believed that the sunken place was more a metaphor for the state the black people have felt for a long time. That black people are always going to be placed in a box, in specific categories, stereotypes that were demining and extremely difficult to escape. Or that black people are always going to be seen as inferior in the eyes of white people. However, when I heard Jordan Peele talk about the sunken place and how he thought of mass incarceration and how he thought of the piling of black bodies into the carcel system for the most minor offenses being locked away for a long time, that made a more sense, then what I originally thought. Get Out is one of those movies that is hard to forget about.  It was one of the most original storylines that I have seen in a horror film. I was not scared because there was a demonic possession, zombies, or ghosts. I was scared because this movie was extremely accurate to the racism that black people experience in this country on a day-to-day basis.

The Adventures of DAVID DASHIKI-Story of an African American Hero- Whatever Happened to Eusebio?        Daddy Dashiki...Remembers.
Tumblr media
We stood in the airport laughing. I was to leave previous to that Monday. However, there was a dispute about my passport. If the truth be told, it was NOT updated and stamped to allow my departure from the country. I had no money. I, as most American did, spent every last dime I possessed so that I would not have to carry that crazy looking money home.to America. I challenged the airport security. To no avail.... I told everyone in that space that I was leaving this mother fucker tonight. I became quite sedate and comfortable when I was instructed by several officers that if I attempted to charge that gate again, I would spend more time incarcerated than would be pleasing. I recognized the root word ‘CARCEL’ AND SHUT THE FUCK UP.
i had to return to my pension and sit in my old room while the other students wanted to know what the fuck happened. I was angry. I was quieted abruptly by my colleagues/ fellow boarders who counselled me quite sternly that I was not in America. That I should stop being a donkey’s ass, handle my business and get the hell on home. I swallowed the advice and the dig. The next day I was the first one at the USA embassy. on borrowed funds. I, humbly submitted my paperwork Eusebio, my true friend, was at my side. He said that he would return to the airport with me so that I would not fuck things up again. Our friendship grew deeper in those moments before the flight. I teased him about his chosen profession...gynecology. “ There is a degree in that?’ I explained that I would study and pay for a degree in the field. We shared lunch, chatted for hours. Finally, it was all done. Before I departed , I said that I would be in constant contact with him. Many days would not pass before he heard from me. He swore the same oath. We never did. Today, many moons later, I sit and wonder... ,”Whatever happened to Eusebio Sanz Parejo? “
I recall the first day we met in the pension. He had this surprised look on his face as if he was studying me. For whatever reason, I ignored the inspection and continued my conversation with my roommates. Finally , he broke the silence and asked , “ Where are you from?” ‘ The United States I responded proudly
“! Mira ! el tio ese...esta orgulloso de su pais!”
Si, es mi pais . Tiene sus problemas sin embargo...es mi pais
A heated debate followed about America. I attempted to defend her. However , the truth prevailed.. America has a long history of cruelty and hatred for its Black citizenry. After the heated discussion, we became extremely close friends. We were always debating issues at the dinner table. These verbal encounters would often last for the entire meal. He was articulate as hell. smart and crafty in debate. I would lose many of the battles. I simply didn’t care . I was learning. My Spanish was improving rapidly.
Eusebio’s family owned a huge finca in Badajoz , Spain. Her never commented on his wealth or status. However, all signs indicated that they were not paupers since his brother was a boarder also at the pension and a student at the University of Madrid in Agronomy. There were younger children at home. From the constant mention of her skills as a manger beyond the wifely preoccupations, Eusebio’s mother ran the household while the father raised and sold cattle throughout all of Spain. I recall even today the gentle and loving manner in which he spoke of her. The affection was so deep and strong that it was palpable. Of all the things we had in common, the most outstanding attribute of our friendship was that we were both Mamma’s boys and proud of it.
The first letter came and I was elated. Quickly I answered. I was anticipating a return to Spain. but this time it would be to the finca...Talking until dark. Laughing until my belly hurt., Dining on enormous chunks of beef. Drinking red wine until I was as loose as the change in my pockets. Then, life got in the way and the dream fizzled. We, simply, stopped communicating. I was hired to teach at a local school and he was a practicing physician, a gynecologist. No jokes here. Just that lingering thought. Beyond the mundane espionage that I engaged in. which produced meager fruit.” Whatever happened to Eusebio Sanz Parejo?’
i am compelled to write the letter I failed to pen years ago. This is a friendship that I must rekindle. Si, voy a echarle unas cartitas.
