Haven III: Finally, A Confrontation [ Dream of the Endless x Reader]
AN: This was a doozy to write. I hope you guys enjoy. I’m going somewhere with this.... I think. I’m not too jazzed with the ending of this part, but I needed it for the next parts and well, dream creation is definitely NOT my forte, so I apologise if it didn’t really make sense and if Dream was a bit ooc. Warnings: A mention of sensory issues in kids, but is really very vague.
[Part II]
Tumblr media
You had a smile on your lips as you watched the children, mortal and dream alike, running along the bridge. It was one of your favorite pastimes whenever you were out of the castle. Here in the Dreaming, physical differences were erased. It did not matter if you were human or fae, if you have brown skin or blue, if you have scales or wings. Here, children were able to act as children, be children, with no limit to their imagination and no limit to their fun. And it filled your heart to witness.
The day was beautiful with clear skies and everything around of you was breathtaking. The ships and boats that sailed underneath the bridge tooted and honked as they pass by. Birds and dragons and gargoyles flew overhead, captivating you. Green covered your vision as you looked upon the mountains across the waters and gazed at the distinctive curves of a slumbering maiden. You wondered if the shape was carved by Dream himself and if so, if it was a homage someone he knew.
Thinking of the King of Dreams sent a slight pang through your chest. It has been weeks and he had yet to warm up to your presence in his domain. He was closed off, distant, only speaking to you when needed. Any attempt you made to get to know him fizzled out quite quickly when he would only give you one word answers. That was if you were lucky. Other times, he would simply look at you, as if he was trying to solve the universe's most complex Rubik's cube.
Many of the palace staff you met had told you not to take it to heart, that it was just the way he is. He preferred to do things himself, in his own way. Of course, you understood why he acted the way he did. He is the physical embodiment, the literal personification of dreams and he is the one that contains and monitors and guards the subconscious minds of all beings in the Universe. His was a huge responsibility and one your human mind could not even begin to comprehend.
Nevertheless, it always stung to be dismissed.
"Hey, you! Yeah, you in the red pajamas!"
You turned towards the sound and caught sight of... a scarecrow?
Looking down the bridge, you found you were the only one in red. "It's a hoodie. Not pajamas." You told him.
"Yeah, whatever. Tomatoes, potatoes. If you sleep in it, it's PJs, doll." The scarecrow-man lumbered over to you and you took the opportunity to take him in, from the pumpkin he has for a head, to the toolbelt he had around his skinny, skinny waist. "It's you, right? You're Morpheus's new project?'
One of your eyebrows shot upward. "Project? Is that all I am to him?"
The scarecrow, Merv as you would later be introduced, hesitated. "Uh, I don't know, Red. All I know is that he told me to getcha."
You felt your jaw clench at the notion of being fetched. Like a dog. And just like that, something inside you just snapped. Enough is enough. You had been too complaisant, too polite. It was time you showed some spine.
"No."
The single word felt good as it passed your lips, satisfying. There was a jolt in your heart, as if new life, new power was breathed into you. You watched the shock register on the scarecrow's face, the carved holes of his eyes arching to mimic raised eyebrows as his mouth went slack. "What?"
Feet planted, you looked up defiantly. "No. If he wants to see me, he can come to me. I'll be right here," You caught a ball rolling towards you with your foot, the children's laughs approaching and you shot them a smile. "-with the kids."
And with that, you dismissed the very thought of Dream of the Endless.
xxxx
Everything afterwards felt charged with electric. You had no idea what was going to happen, how Dream was going to react and it filled you with anticipation. Something had changed and it was seeping into your bones.
You felt him before you even saw him, the crackle of tension niggling at the base of your skull. The already fast beating of your heart kicked up a notch.
When you turned around, The Dream Lord stood behind you, his blue eyes intense and his trench coat flapping softly with the gentle breeze of the afternoon. But he didn't look annoyed with you, despite you defying him. He didn't look anything. His handsome face was stoic, flawless like marble, perfectly smooth. He looked at you as he normally would have. Like he had never seen you before.
It only added to your ire.
"Lord Morpheus," You greeted formally, devoid of emotion. "To what do I owe this honor?"
You were laying it on thick, but you were upset and sarcasm is your most valuable offence... and defense.
What followed was a long silence, with him just looking at you, his lips pursed in that constant pout that made you just want to reach out and smooth it away. But you stayed your hand, meeting his eyes, steady.
When no answer came, you shook your head and sighed. Pushing off the railing, you started walking down the bridge. Were you running? Were you expecting, wanting, him to follow? You did not have the answer to these questions. But it did not matter.
You knew he was following, his footsteps soft and measured behind you. Every two of yours equated to one of his, a testament to how tall he is compared to you. The side of your face burned with the weight of his stare and you did your best to hold off from looking back at him.
"What?!" You snapped.
"You are upset."
"And how did you come to that conclusion?" You were being obstinate, you knew, but you had been polite too long and you were only human.
He called your name and you stopped walking immediately. How dare he sound so chastising?
"No! You know what? I am upset! I am!" You stepped in close, a finger against his chest. "I am your guest, yeah? I came here because you wanted to understand me better, but you don’t even speak to me! I have been here for weeks, and you barely looked my way. I thought, fine, you're busy. You're trying to figure out this weird thing I can do, on top of running the entire Dreaming. Best to get out of your way.
But then, when you actually needed me, you sent someone to fetch me! As if I was a pet!" Your hands were flying around your head as you, a mortal, gave the King of Nightmares a tongue-lashing. Heat had flooded your face and you could feel it in your ears. Your fingers were shaking and your eyes stung with the beginnings of frustrated tears.
"You think I wanted this? To be, yet again, different? I do not need that here, alright?! I came here because I wanted a place to feel safe. From judgement and whatever else. If I wanted to be dismissed or made to feel like an outsider, I would have stayed at home!"
By the end of your rant, you were panting. You closed your eyes and tried to get the tears away, to get your breathing under control. Thankfully, there were not many around you to overhear. Even frustrated, you wouldn't want to demean Dream in front of his subjects. At least, not too much.
"I hurt you."
Your attention snapped alert at how close his voice sounded. It was as if you were wrapped up around it, similar to the way his sand would wound around him whenever he travels. A soft gasp escaped you when you realized this was the closest you have been to him.
"Yes." You took a small step back. "A little,"
"Then, forgive me. I did not realize-"
Looking up at him, you saw that he was sincere in his apology. More than that, you saw that he had not realized what he had done, that he did not mean to act the way he did.
Somehow deep down, you had suspected it. He was after all, Endless. Concepts such as emotions and basic human decency must have been so small to him, so insignificant. Perhaps existing for so long, containing the creative and imaginative minds of the whole universe, he had forgotten. Perhaps it was high time he was reminded.
"I forgive you."
It was obvious that he was not used to apologizing, so you let him off easy this time. "So, why were you looking for me?" You changed the subject.
Dream looked away from you for the first time that day, eyes on the horizon. It was a while before he replied. "Lucienne told me you were wondering about the creation of dreams and nightmares. Mine specifically."
The thought of him talking about you with Lucienne sent a different kind of heat to your cheeks. "Yes. Kind of."
He turned back and met your eyes. "Would you like to see it?"
xxxx
The sounds of the waves crashing further down the shore was soothing, calling out to you to dip your toes in the dark grey waters, but despite how hauntingly beautiful it was, it was nothing compared to the sight of Dream in front of you.
Standing a little off to the side, you watched as a dream come into being under his careful attention. The Endless stood with his hands on his back, circling his creation with a concentrated look on his face. To most, he would look like an artist adding some final touches to the art before him. To some degree, it was the truth.
You hadn’t known what to expect, especially not a giant 8-foot tall stuffed octopus, slowly coming together on the beach. Dream had told you of the inspiration behind it, that a little girl with sensory issues were so touch starved, she was dreaming of being hugged by something soft. So he created something whose sole purpose was to hug and reassure.
When he was satisfied with how it looked, you felt the surge of power, cresting, washing over until one eye after the other, the creature blinked, achieving sentience.
"My Lord," It inclined his head in respect to Morpheus, his booming voice reverberating in your bones.
"Mr. Pleasant, welcome to the Dreaming."
"Thank you." He turned and caught sight of you and his big eyes widened to match your own. "Why, hello there. Would you like a hug?"
You couldn't help the grin that erupted on your face as you nodded. The octopus moved, the sands underneath him shifting. Two tentacles unfurled as they welcomed you in and you fell into it without hesitation, feeling the stresses of the day melt off of your body immediately. Giggling with half of your face smushed against pillow-soft knitted dream-yarn, you opened one eye and shot Dream a look.
Before he could say anything, you snagged his hand and pulled him over so that the both of you were pressed against the octopus. You ignored the soft huff of annoyance he let out and smirked. As much as you need it, you felt Dream needed the hug more. Besides, after what he put you through that day, the least he could do was join you in a group hug. ~

From a tender age, Sitara's fascination with music became the cornerstone of her artistic journey. As a young child, she would spend hours mesmerized by the melodies that filled her home, captivated by the way music had the power to evoke emotions she couldn't yet understand. Even before she could write, she would sit with a pen and paper, scribbling what seemed to be random lines, but in her heart, she knew they were the beginnings of heartfelt songs waiting to be expressed.
Growing up, her passion for music only intensified. She became a diligent observer and listener, eagerly absorbing every melody and lyric that crossed her path. With remarkable ease, she would memorize songs that resonated with her soul, effortlessly singing them back with a voice that carried both innocence and depth. Her family, though supportive, held aspirations for her in the field of medicine, hoping she would follow a more conventional path. But Sitara had a fire within her, a burning desire to pursue her true calling, and she fearlessly charted her own course.
To finance her singing and music lessons, she took up work and modeling gigs, utilizing her earnings to invest in her passion. Every penny she earned was a step closer to her dream, a testament to her unwavering determination. She knew that the road ahead would be filled with challenges and sacrifices, but she was willing to embrace them all for the love of music.
Growing up amidst an eclectic mix of music genres, her voice effortlessly transcends the limitations of any single style. Her exceptional talent and passion for music were nurtured through exposure to classical compositions, jazz harmonies, pop anthems, rock ballads, and soulful R&B melodies. Each musical influence has contributed to shaping her versatile vocal range, allowing her to seamlessly explore various musical expressions. Princess Sitara
But her musical journey doesn't end there. Summers spent in India, surrounded by the vibrant world of Bollywood movies, became a significant source of inspiration. This fusion of diverse musical elements adds depth and uniqueness to her performances, captivating audiences with her ability to bridge different musical worlds.

Icons like Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, and Mariah Carey have played significant roles in shaping her musical ideals, inspiring her to push boundaries and explore new horizons. Yet, Sitara's love for Carnatic and Tamil music remains palpable, with gifted artists such as Bombay Jayshri and AR Rahman serving as guiding lights in her pursuit of excellence.
As she confidently strides ahead, she dreams of signing a record deal with a renowned major label like Sony Music, Universal, or Roc Nation. Her aspirations extend far beyond the mere release of albums; she envisions her music coming alive through visually stunning and thought-provoking music videos that captivate not only hearts but also minds. April 2020 music reviews, or, music I enjoyed in previous weeks L. Fairon
Meredith Monk & Bang on a Can All-Stars – Memory Game (2020) Lemna – Storytelling #1 (2020) Beatriz Ferreyra – Echos+ (2020) DakhaBrakha – Alambari (2020)
Meredith Monk & Bang on a Can All-Stars – Memory Game (Cantaloupe Music) https://bangonacan.bandcamp.com/album/memory-game Memory Game is a revivification of some previously published works – including pieces from the Do You Be (1987) and Impermanence (2008) albums, among others –, plus selections from The Games, an unreleased sci-fi opera co-created with Ping Chong and performed in Berlin in 1983. But what seemed at first a kind of retrospective album, in fact embodies everything we love about Meredith Monk: a dedicated vocal ensemble specially trained to her repertoire, incredibly moving songs and lyrics, interesting arrangements and a great instrumental accompaniement by classically-trained players. Indeed, NY contemporary music ensemble Bang on a Can bring their rhythm accuracy and instrumental prowess to the project – electric guitar and clarinets are especially great. The vocal trio around Monk is also totally convincing. And then there are the songs themselves: disarmingly simple, unbelievably sad or full of gaiety, based on basic English words (or occasionally German), embarking casual conversation or cabaret song, onomatopeia, child babble or bird imitation – at the end of the sublime Memory Song, for instance, Monk ullulates like a flock of cranes in the sky to devastating effect for this listener. Granted, the album lacks an 18mn mothership ala Turtle Dreams, and the instrumental opener is but a distraction, but apart from these quibbles, the album is just fantastic.
Lemna – Storytelling #1 (Horo) https://lemna.bandcamp.com/album/storytelling-1-reminiscences-of-inner-scenery Oneiric, intricately crafted miniatures for electronic sounds by Japanese composer Lemna aka Maiko Okimoto. Usually avoiding regular rhythms or beat, the music is based on sequences of a few highly filtered notes slowly creeping back and forth, while undescript white noise agitation is obsessively crawling to reach the surface. Lemna is interested in timbres and tones, their proximity, homophony or dissonance. Her music is an exploration of the surreal and the hypnagogic – the album is said to have been recorded during insomnia nights. Reverb is used to mingle sounds together and blur their individualities, while a minute attention to details in the sound processing and the arrangements ensure that the small tickling sounds reach out amid a sea of shifting tonalities. Storytelling #1 is a long album at 70+mn, but Lemna manages to captivate the listener throughout this well thought-out collection of tracks.
Beatriz Ferreyra – Echos+ (Room40) https://room40.bandcamp.com/album/echos Archival material from Argentine-born Beatriz Ferreyra – a member of the INA-GRM from 1963 to 1970. Dating from 1978, 1987 and 2007, these pieces complement our knowledge of this fine musique concrète composer. With the various tracks already published by Fylkingen in 1977, Mego in their Recollection GRM series in 2012 and 2015, and her synth+tape recorder duo with Christine Groult on Trace Label in 2015, we're slowly gaining a more accurate view of Ferreyra's œuvre and individuality. Openner "Echo – In Memoriam Of Mercedes Cornu", a piece from 1978, is a poignant tape collage based on a unique sound source, that of Ferreyra's late niece Mercedes talking and singing. Vocal excerpts are subject to collage, superposition, accumulation, plus various sound effects and tape manipulations of the analog domain. Dating from 1987, the second piece uses the composer's own voice, heavily manipulated to create disembodied choirs, grotesquely elongated syllables and onomatopeia. Titled "L'autre ... Ou Le Chant Des Marécages" [Otherness... or, the Swamp Chorus], the track presents Ferreyra's poetic and phantasmatic vision of sound poetry. With #3 L'autre Rive [The Other Shore], from 2007, Ferreyra added computer and synthesizer to her beloved tape recorder. The music is much more abstract here, based on a diversity of artificial sounds and electronic textures, plus occasional percussion samples used to great effect. A lively, almost restless piece, with  internal dynamics that catches the attention. Generally speaking, Ferreyra's poetry and individuality shines through these fine works of musique concrète, though I can't help thinking she stays too much within the limits of the INA-GRM canon.
DakhaBrakha – Alambari (self release) https://dakhabrakha.bandcamp.com/album/alambari New album by Ukrainian folk & jazz quartet DakhaBrakha, dominated by the splendid voices of Olena Tsybulska, Iryna Kovalenko and Nina Garenetska, also doubling on cello, piano, percussion, etc, and all brilliant, classically-trained multi-instrumentalists by themselves. The inspiration for each track is stylistically varied, based on lullaby, ballad, folk and traditional or jazz, and is peppered with scat vocals, slap bass, cabaret song or Serbian turbo-funk elements, delivered in playful arrangements. But the vocals dominate here, with their exquisite vibrato and beautiful, Eastern-European female timbres, soloing, alternating or singing in unison. To us Westerners, the group singing is occasionally reminiscent of 1980s Bulgarian choirs. The man of the band, Marko Halanevych, also contributes vocals as a counterpoint to the women's section, and provides great accordion accompanyment. I found Nina Garenetska particularly impressive on cello throughout the entire album. Incredible traditional reed instrument solo (the zhaleika) by Iryna Kovalenko on track #5 Torokh.

Annie Oakley: In a Man's World
Women lead advancements in science, technology, politics, sports and activism—often fighting against inequity and opposition at every turn.
— Article From The Collection: Women In American History | NOVA-PBS
Tumblr media
This lithograph poster shows three of the greatest sharpshooters of the day — Annie Oakley, Doc Carver and Captain Adam Bogardus with Buffalo Bill Cody. Courtesy: Greg Martin
Annie Oakley's life spanned years of tremendous change for American women. By the time of her death in 1926, Americans were celebrating the liberated, urban-focused, modern times of the Jazz Age. Women had won the right to vote, wore less restrictive clothes, and followed a changing ideal that was loosening some of the restrictions on women's roles and behavior that had reigned through the 19th century.
Though she excelled in shooting, a sport that was traditionally a male domain, Annie Oakley did not align herself with the feminists of her day. Program interviewees Paul Fees, Shirl Kasper, Joy Kasson, Virginia Scharff, Mary Zeiss Stange, Elliott West, and R. L. Wilson explore Annie Oakley's attitude toward women's issues.
Questions:
How would you characterize the changes for women during Oakley's lifetime?
Shirl Kasper, Biographer: She's born before the Civil War. She's born in the Victorian era. And she lives into the modern area, 1926. So much changes during her life. She is a Victorian woman. And yet she seems like a modern woman. She's kind of both... All kinds of things are happening in America. The Industrial Age has come. We're getting all kinds of new machines. We're getting telephones and we're getting sewing machines and we're getting movies, and women are parading for their political rights... Gender expectations are changing. You know, in the Victorian era... women are supposed to be true women. They're supposed to be pious and pure and domestic. They stay home. The husband goes out into the world.
Elliott West, Historian: During the late 19th century there were of course women who could be seen on the streets carrying placards and holding conventions for women's rights, advocating greater participation of women in all areas of American life. And there were women, of course, who conformed to a Victorian image, women corseted and always on the verge of a swoon. But most women, as common sense would tell you, fell in between those two extremes. Most women were also caught up in these changes and so that meant, I think, that most women were trying to decide exactly where they stood on the spectrum between those two poles asking themselves what they thought about this, how they felt about this. And what someone like Annie Oakley did was give them an image of someone who really fell between those two poles, who could be seen as reflected in both of those two extremes. Someone therefore that these women could identify with.
Was it forward-thinking for Buffalo Bill to hire a woman shooter?
Paul Fees, Historian: Before Annie Oakley was hired for the Wild West show, there were no acts that incorporated women. There were no narrative elements that featured women... Annie Oakley paved the way. The presence of a strong woman -- that is, a western woman, a self-reliant woman -- allowed the show to begin to experiment with narrative elements such as the attack on the settlers' cabin, to make use of one of the strongest American narrative myths, the myth of captivity, and to allow women to begin to show themselves as strong, self-reliant, western, to begin to show themselves as capable of competing with and working with men.
Joy Kasson, Historian: I think the idea of a woman shooter, before Annie Oakley, might have seemed to be more along the lines of the freak show. As Dr. Johnson famously said about the dog that walks on its hind legs -- it's not whether it does it well --it's that it does it at all.
Virginia Scharff, Historian: Annie Oakley was a self-made woman and a self-made American if ever there was one. This is somebody who triumphed over the most horrible childhood you could imagine, picked up a gun and made her fortune first as a market hunter, and then as an entertainer. She understood the importance of marketing herself. And so when it came to joining the Wild West and dealing with Buffalo Bill, there was probably never a woman in the history of the U.S. who was better equipped to take up the challenge of creating a legend, of creating a myth of the western woman and then embodying that myth with the kind of lady-like demeanor that would make her acceptable.
Did Oakley use sex appeal in her act?
Paul Fees, Historian: Annie Oakley managed to combine both demureness and voluptuousness in her costume... She never showed any skin. Her ankles were never bare. But her costumes were form-fitting. She wore leggings under short skirts, so people could see the shape of her legs as she ran out into the arena... She was, in that sense, appealing to the best instincts in the men in her audience, men who were attracted to her sexuality while still not having to feel guilty about being attracted, because at the same time she was ladylike and she was demure...
Joy Kasson Historian: She made her own costumes. That was very important to her. Was part of her desire to control her self-presentation. And if you look at those pictures carefully, you see the skirts are shorter than .. grownup women would have worn on the street. But that's because she was an athlete. She was active. She had the short skirt, the bodice, the loose bodice. She had fringes. She had clothing that suggested the West. It was often made of something practical, like cotton. But she sewed them herself. She could move easily in them, and yet she looked respectable. She looked childlike. She looked very attractive. She wore her hair down. That plus her small stature -- she was only about five feet tall -- made her look like a child. And I think that part of her self-presentation as this skilled woman marksman was that she was at the same time sweet and non-threatening. She had the little pout and the little kick that she gave as part of her act. And her clothing was the marker that she was both an athlete but also a charming little girl.
How did Oakley exemplify both traditional and modern women's roles?
Shirl Kasper, Biographer: Annie Oakley's] roles in the marriage were inverted. Annie was earning the bread. Frank was the secretary, managing, cleaning her guns, fixing up her schedule. Their roles are reversed. Annie does have the man's role, the same as she did when she was a kid, paying off the mortgage on her mom's house. That's what her father should have done. But of course he was dead. So she did take on this manly role, even though she seemed so feminine. She did have the manly role, and Frank took a back seat, which traditionally is the woman's role.
Elliott West, Historian: When the First World War came along she offered to raise a regiment of women to fight in that war... as she had done in the Spanish American War. She offered to teach soldiers how to shoot. She raised money for the war itself, she raised money for things like the YMCA, she became a kind of a public figure and almost a public activist in those ways. And yet at the same time she continued to not just to advocate but to live out the role of the proper wife.
Mary Zeiss Stange, Professor of Women's Studies: On the one hand, she is the trailblazer who is shattering stereotypes about appropriate feminine behavior, and yet on the other hand, she is a very proper Victorian lady... She was such a revolutionary figure in terms of being a media superstar, if you will. She could not only out-shoot men -- she was out-earning most men of her time. And there are only so many gender roles that one person can break. And so I think in that regard... she felt it was very necessary for her to be appropriate feminine and traditional in a number of recognizable ways.
Paul Fees, Historian: She was bold, and yet she was reserved. She was sensual and girlish, but she was never coy. So I think that what she projected was a vitality and freshness that for many people came to stand for American womanhood. It's what made American women attractive -- that outdoor complexion, that wonderful figure, and yet that carriage, that demureness, that suggested that she was in charge of herself and not to be had.
Why did Oakley encourage women to learn to shoot?
Shirl Kasper, Biographer: She overhears a woman talking, "I wish I could learn to shoot a gun." And Annie goes up to her and says, "I'll teach you." This is the first time in her life, it seems, that she really starts to make women friends... And I think she takes great delight in teaching these women how to use a gun. She says she teaches 15,000 women over the years.
Mary Zeiss Stange, Professor of Women's Studies: In Annie's time, a fair number of women were taking up hunting, especially after Theodore Roosevelt and [Gifford] Pinchot and company really started working hard to promote the idea of sport hunting as an appropriate activity for middle-class women as well as men. Interestingly enough, editors of outdoor magazines at that time argued that it would be good to take your wife hunting and shooting, because then she wouldn't be bothering her sweet little head with things like politics. Some people actually saw hunting as a nice sort of outlet that was much healthier than, for example, arguing for women's suffrage.
R. L. Wilson, Firearms Historian: Annie was comfortable with the way she was. She loved to shoot and she loved to ride and she liked to do all these athletic things. And she was also gifted at encouraging other people to do it.
How did Oakley feel about the women's suffrage movement?
Mary Zeiss Stange, Professor of Women's Studies: Oakley, for a variety of personal and perhaps professional reasons, did not ally herself with the feminist movement of her time. She didn't argue for—in fact, she explicitly argued against—women's suffrage. She didn't argue for the kinds of things that the so-called "new women" of her day were arguing for. But interestingly, and ironically, in a sense, she was living a lot of the things that her feminist sisters were arguing for. And in some ways, she was also arguing for some of the same things they were, especially with regard to equal pay for equal work. She was an early proponent of that... In a sense, Annie was rather like the kind of women that you hear still today, who say, "I'm not a feminist, but I believe in equal rights for women—I believe in equal pay for women."
Shirl Kasper, Biographer: People are always shocked when I say Annie didn't want women to vote. They're like, "How can that be? Certainly she was a feminist." But she wasn't political in that way.
Virginia Scharff, Historian: We wonder how someone who taught women shooting classes, who encouraged women to be self reliant, who encouraged them to aspire to greatness, could possibly, under any circumstances, have opposed a woman's right to vote. I can't figure it out, all I can figure is that she thought this was going to be bad publicity for her—that this is fundamentally somebody who is in certain regards culturally conservative and not somebody who wanted to go out on a limb, and take a controversial stand. I think she thought that coming out for the woman's vote might be bad marketing and that's all I can figure, because otherwise there's absolutely no reason why she would have been against women's right to vote... She understood that her public consisted of people who were both for and against women's suffrage and she did not want to risk alienating anybody who might buy a ticket to the show.
What is Oakley's legacy?
Shirl Kasper, Biographer: I think Annie's image has changed over time... She comes to represent not maybe who she was, but... this West of freedom and independence... We embrace her because of what she represents to us, even though it might not be totally accurate. We want her to be a feminist, even if she wasn't, because she seems that way, and we need her to be.
Mary Zeiss Stange, Professor of Women's Studies: Annie Oakley is one of the first images available to the American populace-at-large of what a powerful woman could look like, especially to the extent that guns were associated with power. And in American society, we've been called a gunfighter nation. Guns have always symbolized being powerful and knowing how to use power. In that regard, she's a very significant figure and a trailblazer.
R. L. Wilson, Firearms Historian: Annie Oakley showed that a woman could do things that a man could do—that she could do it in a way that wasn't threatening to a man—that she could become a international celebrity, doing this—that she could be athletic—that she could exert herself—and that she could make a career for herself that people at that time could never imagined have been done by a woman.

We Asked 10 Sommeliers: What Are You Pouring on Valentine’s Day?
Tumblr media
Love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day is generally celebrated with a drink in hand. We asked sommeliers across the country what they’ll be pouring on Feb. 14. Whether it’s a special bottle for one, sentimental favorite to share, or well-earned shift drink, here’s how 10 wine professionals will be drinking on Valentine’s Day.
“Valentine’s Day is cuffing season’s most sacred day. Unless my $30-a-month investment in Match.com yields a return, I will celebrate alone. Unshackled but hopeful, I will drink to love with a glass (O.K., bottle) of Winter’s Hill 2015 Reserve Pinot Noir… This wine is good company! So captivating with a silky mouthfeel and intense flavors of black cherry, raspberry, and spices. Who needs a date?” — Regine Rousseau, Sommelier, Author, and CEO, Shall We Wine, Chicago
“With my husband we try to share a special bottle every year, maybe not the priciest bottle out there but something that means a lot to us, personally. This year we will probably return to our first-date wine, Domaine de la Tour Vieille Collioure rouge from the south of France. A simple bottle with a lot of soul.” — Victoria James, Beverage Director, Cote, New York
“My wife loves white Burgundy, particularly leaner, racier versions. One of her favorites is Domaine Roulot Meursault Villages, so I will be pouring the 2014 for her. Lucky for me, she makes the most delicious scallop pasta with parsley and lemon — a perfect marriage!” — John Slover, Corporate Beverage Director, Major Food Group, New York
“Valentine’s Day is one of the very few times a year I enjoy having dessert. This coming year I plan on having a bottle of Dumangin Ratafia de Champenois on hand. It’s a vin de liqueur made from Champagne juice that’s been fortified with Champagne brandy and then aged in a solera. It’s one of my absolute favorite dessert tipples because it just pairs with everything. Chocolate, fresh fruit, crème brulée, it does it all.” — Gregory Stokes, Sommelier, Veritas, Columbus, Ohio
“Well, I’ll be working, so my date will be my staff after work. I usually try to drop some tasty wines and knowledge bombs on them after grueling shifts like Valentine’s Day. Thankfully I have a bunch of wine geeks on staff so they get all jazzed about the weird shit I usually have kicking around. I’ve been sitting on the 2011 Macle Chard for a minute. Super-crazy wine — so salty, so briny, so tasty. Anyway, something like that, neato and uncommon.” — Sebastian Zutant, Co-Owner and Beverage Director, Primrose, Washington, D.C.
“We usually pour delicious grower Champagne by the glass on this day… This year, we will be indulging in a Franciacorta, the Barone Pizzini Brut Rosé. These wines like the Barone Pizzini are generally small- production wines and organically farmed from a small region around Lake Iseo in Italy. My dates will be my hard working staff at Flight (and of course, that includes Kabir, my partner in life and Flight)!” — Swati Bose, Sommelier and Owner, Flight Wine Bar, Washington, D.C.
“I never get to celebrate Valentine’s Day with my wife because I’m always working the floor those nights (insert sad violin music). If I could, I would bring a stunner bottle to that date. I love old, rare, and everlasting Rieslings from everywhere in the world. The way they age, gaining texture and complexity, is kind of the parallel with a relationship that gets stronger, interesting, and fortified with time. I have a bottle of 1970 St. Nikolaus Scharzhofberg Riesling Auslese from the Mosel region of Germany ready for the occasion.” — Ferdinando Mucerino, Sommelier, Rustic Canyon, Santa Monica, Calif.
“Cru Beaujolais! Although the holiday has basically ruined the Saint-Amour Cru, there are thankfully nine other great Crus to choose from. My wife is a huge Beaujolais fan and one of our favorites to open is Marcel Lapierre Morgon. Bright, fresh, and playfully complex, Lapierre Morgon is a great bottle to share for a casual lunch or a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner.” — Jack Mason, Master Sommelier at Pappas Bros. Steakhouse.
“Elvio Cogno Barolo Vigna Elena. It is light in color with intense aromatics, but powerful on the palate. It hits on all cylinders and is intoxicatingly romantic in its own right.” – Dan Amatuzzi, Beverage Director, Eataly USA
“I am a huge fan of Lambrusco, especially the drier, lighter styles. What is sexier than fruity, pink fizz?” — Emily Wines, Master Sommelier and VP, Beverage Experience, Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants, Nationwide

Hard mode: choose up to 3 different OTP AU settings and write 500 words or less for each! Good luck! (feel free to become the next fairy and offer some writers your own challenge, too!)
I got this message more than 1 moth ago but I’ve finally finished them!Ready for some musical AUs?
Phantom of the OperaThe lock of the door gotturned but Jack didn't notice it. He was too busy changing intosomething more comfortable than stage clothes, deciding in the endfor a white gown with laces at the hems. The oddity of thesituation hit him when he entered the waiting room of his dressingroom and suddenly all the candles turned off as if by magic.Hetold himself he wouldn't act scared. Jack had always been brave, since the day he had been left all alone in the world, orphan of theomnic crisis. Hesitating for a brief moment he looked around, checking for a possible intruder. One could never know, given thetimes. Not to mention Jack was steadily becoming the new star of theopera. Everything could be possible, even the worst possibility.Thevoice that broke the tense silence put Jack's nerves to rest.Uponrecognizing who was speaking, he relaxed immediately. Jackhad no face nor a proper name to associate with the entity but thedeep voice that had spent so much excruciating time coaching himthrough arpeggios and melodies was his Angel of music. An obscureentity who followed him ever since the day he put foot inside theOpéra Garnier and who Jack believed was a messenger from hisdeceased father. It called to him with his tenor tone, warmingits way into Jack's heart even if it stung of jealousy andpossessiveness, “ignorant fool this brave young suitor, sharing inmy triumph!”Jack had to hide hissmile at being somehow coveted that way but more important matterswhere at hand, like his musical education. Sweet-talking the Angelout oh his outbursts was something that Jack had long since grownused to do. He had a demanding nature, prone to tantrums that seemedto be placated only by Jack's angelic voice hitting the right notesof a soft melody – the kind that stole hearts and tears at the sametime.Maybe, though, thistime the ghost had felt that his domain over Jack was beingthreatened, undermined enough that he wanted to re-assert his powerover the singer once and for all. Jack was slipping from between hisfingers, captivated by the spell of an admirer who had nothing tooffer other than the funds that surely were not coming from the hardwork. Certainly not someone who deserved him.If the ghostliving in the basement of the Opéra wanted to keep Jack close to himhe needed to offer him something more valuable than vile money, orhis expertise on singing. He needed toentice him, draw his attention by making him curiousand ensnare Jack in his net. Hismellifluous words had offered him the coveted sight of hisface.Jack followed his beloved voice toward the mirror andinto it, until he came face to face with the man wearing a white halfmask, and then took his hand.
Chicago
Thatsurely wasn't the way that Jack Morrison thought he would becomefamous and end up under the spotlight. He had thought it wouldhappen through a career in cabaret, dancing and singing and lookinglike a delicious candy wrapped in refined, sparkling sequin clothes, and all that jazz.Instead, his audience would get to know himin a very different way... by his bewildered mugshot greeting thereaders of tomorrow's newspapers from the first page, the captioncalling him murderer. But that would be for tomorrow. As fortoday, Jack had been dragged off to jail to wait for his turn at thecourthouse, thrown in together with similarly convictedfelons. There with hims was Gabriel Reyes in all his glory, the latest murderous sensation in town. He was famous for the show heshared with his brother and for killing said brother and his owncheating husband in a blind rage. He had seemed to realize what hehad done only afterward, while washing his hands from all theirblood. There had been no guilt whatsoever. It was too bad thatGabriel's fame was already on the path of decline due to Jack'sunexpected stunt. The world was full of sharks and once Jackhad managed to grab the spotlight for himself, he found it difficultto let go of it, or share, even if Reyes was a true vaudevillain, more than Jack could ever dream of being. A hot one too, worth todance a sweet tango with, but as far as Jack was concerned, it wasnot enough for him to give up on his one chance at popularity.Jackhad done anything he could in order to hold on this opportunity; hescraped together what little money he had and made sure his tale waseven more pathetic, appealing to the masses, fluttering his eyelashesat the paparazzi and lawyers alike. It was that way that AnaAmari, best criminal defense lawyer of the city did her gigs: prettyboys with pretty eyes and sob stories. She was quick to switch fromGabriel's case to Jack's, and her silver tongue was legendary incourt. She spun his account until it became unrecognizable and farfrom the truth. It was self defense! They'd both reached for thepulse rifle!Almost ashamed by his own actions, Jack acceptedtips from Ana that would have been otherwise used in Gabriel's case, making the celebrated actor go ballistic. In the end though, after his own sentence had been lifted, it had been Gabriel the oneto seek Jack out and ask for his help. Cooperation. “You know, mydouble act is still a damn fun time. But to put it on I need apartner.”Double act, double the murderers for double thefame. The vaudeville scene was going to become all theirs. And theinviting smile on Gabriel's face was naughty enough to suggest thatmore would be shared between them than just the profits.Jackaccepted.
Moulin RougeTheroom was the most absurd collection of things Jack had ever had thepleasure of seeing. It should have been a pleasure. Probably. It wasnot.Itwas gaudy, an extravaganza of exotic objects unlike any other, andfar removed from the simple, almost puritan education Jack hadreceived while growing up.Itmade him uneasy, thorn between gawking at the mess or leaving in ahurry. There where reddrapes everywhere, carved panels of gold painted wood, statues ofmonstrous foreign creatures... In the middle of all that opulence, clad in nothing but black satin and lace lingerie clinging to hisstatuesque body stood Mr Gabriel, motionless. Hissmile was a little awkward, too big and unnatural, one hand in theair, the other resting on the inviting curve of his hip.Jackhad to be honest with himself: he would have immediately said yes toanything the actor proposed him, then and there, at that display. Theproblem was, Mr Gabriel seemed to think the same - as soon as Jackstarted explaining the reason why he had been sent to meet up withhim, Mr Gabriel had launched into a series of yips and barks at hiswords, rolling around on the silk sheets of the bed, gripping them inhis beautiful fingers like a lifeline.Uncomfortable at thedisplay due to both a certain sense of decorum that was beingoffended and the fact that he felt a growing attraction at the sightthat he could not deny, Jack tried to not stammer as he reminded MrGabriel that he was there for  a private poetry reading session, asper their prior agreement in the ballroom. When Mr Gabrielpulled Jack down on the bed with him, begging for more naughty words,Jack gaped at him like a fish. Was Mr Gabriel a kindred soul, one whotrembled in delight at the beauty of rhymes and poetry? Thehand that sneaked on his inner thigh and the hot mouth latching atthe base of his neck, whereis pulse was beating faster than usual, told Jack a different story. Yeah, no. Big mistake.Thatwasn't what Torbjörnhad sent Jack there for! He said as much to Mr Gabriel and theperformer recoiled at the words.“Torbjörn...You're not the Duke!” Mr Gabriel was both offended and distressed. It would have been comical if he weren't throwing accusing glares atJack, who still found him the most gorgeous man he'd ever seen, evenif he looked murderous at the moment.“I-I am not!” whatmust have happened was becoming clear to him. An even biggermistake.A sharp knock on the door broke the momentary stallbetween the two.“Shit, the Duke!” Mr Gabriel whispered ashis face paled, eyes snapping to the door.Shit indeed, Jackthought. To be posted soon on AO3!

8 Crazy Musical Instruments that Actually Exist

8 Crazy Musical Instruments that Actually Exist
The quest to create sounds is nothing new to humanity. We have been ‘making noise,’ so to speak, for quite some time, haven’t we? Music and musical instruments evolved just as we did over hundreds of thousands of years. While the earliest musical instruments might have been quite rudimentary, we have managed to invent and refine some of the best sounding instruments through the years – including some legit crazy musical instruments!
But when you come across an instrument such as ‘the cheese drum,’ you can’t help but wonder; have we gone too far? Well, the following examples do suggest that we have indeed! At least in some cases, that is.
Here are 8 crazy musical instruments than actually exist. Some of them can be a bit too much to handle, so consider yourself warned! Here we go!
1. The Musical Saw
Sega Musicale Pietro Festa by Pietrofesta licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0
That’s right. Some wise guy looked at a wood saw and apparently, the first thing that came to his mind was – music!
As the name suggests, it is literally a wood saw that is bent and used to create various sounds using a bow similar to a violin. Rubbing a bow against the flat end of the saw creates high-frequency vibrations that the artist can control by controlling the tension of the bent saw blade.
As you can imagine, it is not a particularly beautiful instrument to look at. It is a saw, people! But it is worth a ‘hear.’ The singing saw will remind you of a lady opera singer with a high-pitched voice. As a matter of fact, the singing saw has received a classification under the Hornbostel-Sachs system and is classified as an idiophone, so you know this thing is for real!
If you are interested in hearing what it sounds like, check out the following video. It’s actually quite captivating!

2. The Glass Armonica
Glass Armonica by Tonamel licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0
Now, this one has some rich history associated with it, but more on that a bit later. Let me tell you what this thing is first. I am sure you must have seen someone making music using glass bowls filled with varying amounts of water. Well, the Glass Armonica operates on a similar principle but without the water.
The Glass Armonica (not to be confused with Glass Harmonica that also exists!) is a series of glass bowls or goblets that are arranged in increasing diameters along the length of a horizontal rod. The whole assembly spins on an axis and music is produced by applying friction on the surface of the rotating glass surface.
Now, about that rich history that I alluded to earlier. The mechanical version of the instrument was actually invented by none other than our founding father, Benjamin Franklin! Musical geniuses such as Mozart and Beethoven have reportedly used it to make music as well. Not bad for a bowl of glass, if you ask me!
If you are interested in listening to this crazy musical instrument, here is a video that will give you the chills. And while you are at it, see if the sound reminds you of a beloved wizard! If it does, let me know in the comments section below!

3. The Sharpsichord
youtube
The Sharpsichord is perhaps not an ideal instrument to keep in your living room! The giant instrument was invented by the notable musical genius Henry Dagg.
The Sharpsichord is an automatic pin-barrel harp. You create your music by placing ‘pins’ on the surface of a central perforated cylinder. There is a total of 11,520 holes in the cylinder, so, you can create any note imaginable. As the cylinder rotates, each pin plucks the appropriate string on the harp and voila! Music is born.
Of course, the instrument requires a large assembly, and the Sharpsichord is as big as a one-storied house, and it can play only 90 seconds of music before you have to change the pins manually. And did I say there is only one in the entire world and it cost over $125,000 to make? Talk about crazy with a capital ‘C’!
You can catch the inventor in action in the fantastic video above, that features Dagg himself with the Sharpsichord and one of the other instrument on this list – the singing saw!
4. The Hydraulophone
Ryan Janzen playing Hydraulophone by Steve licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0
If you love water parks and playing with water, the Hydraulophone is just for you! It is a relatively modern invention that literally ‘makes music from water!’.
A Hydraulophone consists of a calibrated pipe with holes in it. Water is pumped through the holes, and the artist creates music by plugging the holes on the pipe with his/her fingers, that’s it! It sounds a lot like an organ but with water! It is an H2Organ. See what I did there because H2O is the chemical formula for water…you know what, never mind!
The instrument can be installed in water parks and similar establishments, and you can enjoy getting wet while making some music (no inappropriate thoughts please!) Some people have mastered the Hydraulophone, and they create some of the most stunning pieces of music.
But all said and done, a giant pipe with water coming out of holes that you plug to make music sounds a bit too much to me! What about you? Would you like to hear water make music in a concert?
If you are curious, take a look at this unusual instrument in action, here is a video that is surprisingly soothing. I am not responsible if you feel the urge to go to a water park after watching this though!

5. The Zeusaphone
Zeusaphones in Action by Dracoswinsauer licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0
That’s correct; this instrument is named after the Greek god Zeus! Hands down, this is one of the most visually stunning and pure awesome musical instruments that you will ever come across.
At its heart, the Zeusaphone is a synthesizer that is attached to a Tesla Coil. If you don’t already know what a Tesla Coil is, let me elaborate a bit. A Tesla Coil is an electrical coil that is used to display stunning sparks of electricity when a current is passed through it. Remember the famous picture of Nikolai Tesla?
So, when a musician plays a tune on the Zeusaphone, the current is passed through the accompanying Tesla Coil, and it generates a stunning visual of sparks flying around. It is truly a sight to behold.
If you are interested in checking out this instrument in action, here is a video for you that will have you electrified!

6. The Hornucopian Dronepipe
youtube
If you are into dystopian Sci-Fi, the Hornucopian Dronepipe may appeal to you. It is a fully 3-D printed musical instrument that can double as an art installation.
Basically, it is a quite weirdly shaped pipe that you blow into to create a musical note. The sound of this instrument strongly resembles the more common Didgeridoo.
As far as the look of the instrument goes, it sure looks like an alien boa constrictor! The instrument was designed by the MONAD Studio and let’s say; it is more of an acquired taste.
Check out the video above if you are interested in a soulful demonstration!
7. The Pyrophone
White Night Melbourne 2017 by Gavin Anderson licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0
So, we saw water making music, right? But what about fire? Well, as it turns out, fire too, can make some music. The Pyrophone, literally translated to ‘fire sound’, is a musical instrument that uses gasoline powered fire to create music.
Invented in the late 1800s, the Pyrophone operates on the principle that if fuel is burnt in a hollow glass tube, it can create a note depending on the diameter of the tube and the amount of fuel used. The instrument looks similar to an organ, but the notes are produced by combustion rather than air pressure.
As you can imagine, it is quite a spectacle when the Pyrophone is performed as the glass pipes are placed so that they are visible to the audience.
Here is a video of the Pyrophone in all its glory!

8. The Cheese Drums
Cheese Wheels by PublicDomainPictures licensed under CC0 Public Domain
Yup, that’s right. The Cheese Drums are made from, you guessed it, cheese wheels! Created by the amazingly talented jazz drummer Han Bennink, the Cheese Drums are a drum set with all the percussion parts of the drum kit replaced by wheels of cheese.
Bennink is also known as the drummer who makes music from everything so how could cheese be left out, right? The sound of the drum kit is not like anything you might imagine. He uses cheese wheels of different sizes to make sounds of different pitches.
Now, would the Cheese Drums replace the regular drums? Not really. But they do have a unique ‘flavor’ to them. Maybe it comes from the cheese, who knows?!
If you want to catch the ‘cheese-man’ in action, check out the video below of Han Bennink himself – beating his cheese at an alarming rate!
youtube
So, there you have it. Those are some crazy musical instruments that actually exist. If you loved the post, don’t enjoy it alone, share it with your friends! If you know a crazy musical instrument that deserves to be on the list, please share it in the comments below!
