Oh god this seems like it should be easy but I keep thinking of digimon....

obviously I would've liked more Bill, but I wasn't ready to agree about Nardole until I decided it would've been very funny if he'd just stayed on throughout Thirteen's run, always hanging around awkwardly behind the fam. not sure what sort of energy that would add but I think it would be extremely powerful

Not really about any song in the running (although I do like Freddy You're Supposed to be on Lockdown) but I really love MiatriSs cause they're the only ones who made a song for The Desolate Hope. It's so sad and I love it so much. (Mega spoilers for the game, though)

I either go with a quote from the fic, usually one of the first lines, which tends to be something like: "Oh, no! How can it be that I, Undefeatable Character, have been defeated!?" which both saves me extra writing but also informs the reader of the plot. OR I go for the classic "Character A wants (X), but (insert conflict here)"

it's a classic for a reason! putting the conflict in the summary is often the fastest way to get anyone interested. there's not usually space in a summary to show off how great your characterization or structure or pacing is, but you can always tell me you've set up a good conflict, and maybe even tell me what the stakes are.

and yeah, if you've got a good first line (or lines) in there, why not play to your strengths? one of my summaries is:

which tells very little but it was such a fun first line, and I couldn't introduce the conflict without spoiling the story's "twist," so to speak. (yet another example of how summaries are allowed to be vague!)

writing good opening lines is one of the few writing ideas US public schools seem to have impressed upon us graduates very thoroughly, imo. just anecdotally, lots of fic writers I encounter seem highly skilled at that! and you're so right, those often make a great summary.
