April 19th, 1922, Henford-on-Bagley, England
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Henford Castle was eerily quiet. The great house loomed over Byron, and he suddenly had a sinking feeling that there was something wrong. He watched as the taxi drove off before heading up the stone stairs. He knocked on the door, and nearly five minutes passed before Caplan opened the door, looking pale and stunned.
“Is everything alright?” Byron immediately asked.
“...I only sent the telegram twenty minutes ago,” the butler mumbled to himself before taking a shaky breath. “Come in, your grace.”
Byron took a step before freezing. “...Your grace?”
“The… late duke passed an hour ago. You are now the Duke of Feldsbury.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He stared at the older man, face paling as his heart raced, and the butterflies in his stomach turned into heavy boulders. “What?”
“I’m… sorry you found out like this. Your g-”
He continued speaking, but Byron couldn’t hear him, stumbling away from him, away from the main hall, lips trembling until he got into the room he considered to be his and slammed the door shut, falling to the floor and beginning to weep.
He cried not for Thomas or for the dukedom, he cried because he knew it was the end of his life as he knew it, permanently.

HIMYM or How Andy Met Manon:
Chapter One: Hope Dies Last
Tumblr media
This story is very unserious (until it isn't), some portrayals of canon characters might be exaggerated. Sorry not sorry. This is purely for fun.
Reid Van de Lune belongs to @kc-and-co, Mina Pendleton, who is briefly mentioned belongs to @lifeofkaze.
You can find all the chapters here.
Tumblr media
The whole school was buzzing with excitement and rumours about the friendly visit from Beauxbatons and Durmstrang schools. It was announced a few days before that Hogwarts, once again, will be hosting representatives from both schools. The students were divided into the ones that couldn't wait for the visit and the ones that couldn't care less. Andy Adler represented the former, Hayden Jenkins - the latter. The breakfasts were starting to get really tough to get through with their different amounts of enthusiasm.
"You don't even know if she's going to be there." Hayden said, annoyed at his best friend.
"She is, I can feel it."
"You only saw her, like one time! She probably doesn't even remember you. You didn't even speak to her, I bet."
"Who doesn't remember him?"
Reid Van de Lune joined them, confused about what his friends were squabbling over this time.
"Some random french girl, Andy fantasies about since the last Beauxbatons visit. Three. Years. Ago."
"Her name was Manon!"
Haden brows furrowed. "How do you even know that?"
Andy's whole face melted into an adoring expression, and Hayden quickly regretted his question.
"The wind knocked off her hat in the Clock Tower Courtyard. I picked it up, and the name was embroidered on the inside."
"Don't tell me you kept the hat…"
"Of course not! I gave it back to her immediately. I looked into her eyes… Man, I wish her friends didn't start giggling and dragging her away with them."
"Woah," concluded Reid, "it's like, a scene from, like… a movie."
"Sure, if you're into psychological horror," Hayden scoffed.
Andy sighed, not giving up.
"Come on, don’t be like that! Help me out, I only need a few French lessons, and if she won't be there, it still couldn't hurt, right? Don't any of your fancy slytherin housemates know french?"
Hayden laughed almost honestly. "Maybe in the last century, they were fancy. Have you seen my roommates? Barnaby can barely handle English."
"Hayden."
"I mean, I guess Mina Pendleton, maybe?" He pointed at a blonde girl at the slytherin table, "But I'm not going to be the one talking to her."
"Why not?"
Hayden shuddered. "She intimidates me."
“WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU’RE ALL OUT?!”
Virginia Scott’s angry voice carried through the Great Hall.
"Speaking of girls that are unapproachable…" Andy mumbled as their attention turned towards the end of their table.
“Exactly what I just said.” Jae Kim, the person her anger was directed at, didn't seem worried. “I’m out of all the firewhiskey, elder wine, in all honesty I don’t even have butterbeer at the moment.”
Gigi bit her tongue to avoid screaming at him again.
“And you’re only telling me this now?”
“You didn’t ask about anything specific when we talked last week. You know how fast these things sell around here.”
“I-“ she started but was immediately interrupted by the boy sitting next to her.
“So, how long would it take to execute our order?” asked Diego Caplan, pouring coffee into Gigi's cup in an attempt to calm her down.
“Depends.” he answered, looking suspiciously at the list laying on the table before him. “It’s a big order.”
Gigi sighed heavily and reached for her schoolbag in order to find her purse.
“Ever since you ripped me off on that divination chart you’ve become unbearable, Kim,” she said, handing him a couple of galleons.
Jae shrugged and shoved them into his pocket.
“I’ll talk to you soon.”
And with that he was gone.
"Dude, even since her and the hippie broke up she's been a walking nightmare."
"You mean more than usual?" Hayden chuckled. "No, you're right though, she's unbearable in normal circumstances, but this year is like if someone slipped the essence of insanity into her morning coffee."
"Duuude–" Reid almost choked on air, "what if there was like, a potion that would make you totally speak another language?"
"That would be… perfect actually!" Andy jumped up in his seat. "Is there one?"
Reid suddenly became very serious.
"Do I have an obsession with potions and a head full of blond hair?"
"No…?"
"Then how should I know, I'm not Penny Haywood."
Hayden tuned out their conversation as someone tapped him on the shoulder. He turned around to see two girls he vaguely recognised as fifth year slytherin students. They both were awfully giddy for a Monday morning.
"Sorry, you're Hayden Jenkins, right?"
"The one and only, how can I help you?"
"Well, we just wanted to say that we can't wait to see your band play at the party this Saturday."
"My… band?"
They nodded their heads energetically, and before he could ask more questions, they sprinted out of the Great Hall giggling.
He turned back to his friends completely dumbfounded.
"Snails," Reid said as if he just discovered a new spell.
"Reid that's… I mean it won't hurt to try, we should go anyway if we want to hit the greenhouse before the lessons start."
They gathered their things and stood up.
"Mate, you coming?"
"No, go ahead, I have to take care of something first."
"Suit yourself," Andy shrugged and they were already out of the door.
Hayden also didn't stay at his spot. He had business to take care of at the end of the table. He passed Diego Caplan on his way to the evil witch, and Hayden could swear the Hufflepuff mouthed "good luck" to him.
Virginia Scott was fixing her nails, seemingly unbothered, but Hayden knew her well enough to know that she was still angry about the encounter from before. Her feelings were the least of his concerns at the moment, though.
"Hayden, this is not the best time, darling," she said before he even spoke.
"Don't worry, I just have one little question for you."
She put down the nail file and looked up at him, raising her eyebrows as if she really wanted to hear it.
“Why am I finding out from some random fifth year that not only I have a band but also that I'm going to play with it at your party?”
“Oh, I actually wanted to talk to you about this. I need you to play at my party.”
“Gigi."
“Yes Hayden?”
“I don’t have a band.”
“I’m sure you can figure something out, darling.”
Hayden sighed, immediately regretting not going to the greenhouse with his friends. He could use a smoke right now, after all.

The Ship of DieRuca
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
DieRuca is a ship between Diego Caplan, a Hufflepuff who is passionate about dancing and duelling, and Veruca McQuaid, a Slytherin who takes pride in both her duelling and flying skills.
In this post, you'll get to know how Veruca and Diego are within the AUs I ship them in. To find more DieRuca content, you can look through the #dieruca tag.
It took quite a while to write out since there was a lot I wanted to add in here. But I thought it was best to keep the main AUs I like to hyper-fixate on and imagine about. Also, I used DeepL for the translations for the quote. If I’m wrong, please let me know and I'll fix it.
༺༻༺༻༺༻✩༺༻༺༻༺༻✩༺༻༺༻༺༻
"You are the music of my heart"
A phrase often shared between the two in place of 'I love you.' Usually said in their native languages.
CANON
The two meet during their first year but aren’t officially acquainted until they both join the dueling club. Veruca mostly ignored Diego’s attempts in making conversation due to his constant flirting both during duels and outside of the club. After many duels ending in draws, Diego became part of Veruca’s circle and joined their adventures.
Throughout their last three years of Hogwarts, the two have gotten close to one another since the dancing competition hosted by Madam Rosmerta.
In 1993, Diego and Veruca officially started dating. The lead up to their relationship was slow with Diego taking the initiative in breaking Veruca out of her shell. Most of their dates involve picnics under the stars or walks in the parks. In 1995 they had their first child, Marisol, out of wedlock and got married some time after. In 1997, they had their second child, Carina.
Both Diego and Veruca take part in the Battle at Hogwarts alongside their friends and former professors while their children are at the McQuaid family home with their grandparents.
༺༻༺༻༺༻✩༺༻༺༻༺༻✩༺༻༺༻༺༻
GENDERBENT
Veren McQuaid, the strong and silent, intimidating boy has a soft spot for the flirty, and flamboyant girl, Doria Caplan.
Unlike his female counterpart, Veren appears to be much more intimidating. He's a boy of a few words as he struggles to express himself vocally, he believes his actions will speak for him. He is self conscious of his stoic visage since it often frightens others and causes unwarranted misconceptions of his integrity. His moments of poignant silence and his tall stature scares many away from him, causing him to suffer from loneliness. The closest he has to a friend is Carly (female Carson) since they grew up together. While he doesn't mind Carly's company, Veren gets grumpy when the girl tries to make him bond with others or try to speak for him. When he can't verbally express himself on most occasions, he usually shows simple hand gestures. When he does have the courage to speak, it's usually in the form of short one liners.
Doria would be described as flamboyant, farsighted, a bit egotistical and dramatic. In smaller doses though, those traits are often spoiled by habits of being crude and impatient. A little worse than her male counterpart. She entertains people with 'high-class' etiquette and shameless flattery. While she openly expresses romantic interest, she appears to be oblivious of her own romantic feelings towards Veren. She was completely unphased by his intimidating aura. She constantly showered him with compliments and sometimes even considered him to be her 'bodyguard' due to how easily he can scare people away.
༺༻༺༻༺༻✩༺༻༺༻༺༻✩༺༻༺༻༺༻
FLIPPED!
Flipped!DieRuca is a ship you might want to be worried about for Diego because Veruca is very clingy when it comes to her friends and lover.
While original Diego is a flirt, an excellent dueller and great at dancing, Flipped!Diego is quite the opposite. Flipped!Diego typically lacks self confidence. He's not as charming or flirty as the original, he is shy and sensitive and not much of a strong dueller. Flipped!Diego is always caught off guard whenever Flipped!Veruca shows up randomly. His affection for her might be questionable as he does care for her but sometimes finds her to be a bit exhausting to handle. Despite that, he appreciates how she treats him, with so much love and affection even if he's shy to openly be affectionate with her.
Flipped!Veruca is openly friendly, overly energetic, and bubbly until someone disturbs her happiness and triggers the creepier side to her happy personality. She can be extremely clingy, giving lots of hugs and holding hands. While Veruca is perfectly fine with her small circle of friends, Flipped!Veruca appears to be obsessed with making plenty of friends. A bit of an unhealthy obsession as she will force herself to be their friend by clinging onto them till they submit. She once locked herself in her room for a few days to make friendship sweaters for her and Carson. When she became close with Diego, she did the exact same thing but instead of five sweaters she made fifteen matching sweaters for the both of them.
༺༻༺༻༺༻✩༺༻༺༻༺༻✩༺༻༺༻༺༻
CARDVERSE
Veruca as the Acting Queen of Spades is no damsel in distress, and is in fact a strong and independent woman. She puts her duties as a queen before anything else and has no time fooling around with trivial matters. As a dominant ruler, romance is the last thing that comes to mind for her, if not ever. Her country and her people come before her and anyone else.
Diego as the King of Hearts retains most of his original counterpart's personality. Loyal, charming, passionate and understanding. He finds Veruca's high walls as a challenge to break down, and he often interacts with her more than the rest of the officials within the other regions. He likes to tease the Queen of Spades whenever he gets the chance, and enjoys the progress of seeing her open up more to him.
Veruca at first found his antics as a nuisance more so than anything. He was always distracting her from her duties and seemed to never take his position as the King of Hearts seriously. She started warming up to him after he showed concern when she was overworking herself. Her feelings for him started showing but since they were from different regions, she tried to deny any thought of being together. She does eventually enjoy his company more openly, and a misunderstanding involving a hand crafted gift starts a few rumors within the Kingdom of Hearts. Their relationship, though starting off as a secret, is easily noticeable by the public.
༺༻༺༻༺༻✩༺༻༺༻༺༻✩༺༻༺༻༺༻
MAFIA
In this AU, Diego and Veruca’s personalities are kind of changed. While Diego still retains his charming personality, it is mostly reserved for Veruca, his children and younger siblings. Around others, Diego is more serious, looking at everyone with a cold gaze as if he was staring right through them. When it's necessary, he can resort to ruthless violent acts. With Veruca, she keeps her witty remarks and plays off Diego's advances in the beginning of their relationship. When they get together, Veruca shows her more sentimental side. She's also aware of what Diego's family business truly is and turns a blind eye towards it, after all her family didn’t gain their wealth and fortune through legal ways either.
Veruca and Diego first met at a banquet at the Caplan residence when they were younger. Diego and Veruca’s fathers were friends so they were always invited to parties and other gatherings. Though they met when they were young, they didn't see each other again until adulthood. While Diego is slowly taking on the ropes of the family business, Veruca is a ballet instructor/administrator for a performing arts school. The two meet when Diego was late to pick up his younger sister, Mireya, after a lesson. Diego is aware that Veruca has no involvement in her family’s business and tries to keep her out of it when he’s with her. Unfortunately Veruca gets attacked by a rival gang and she’s in Diego’s care and protection.
The two reminisce about their past and enjoy they’re times together, however Veruca is often left confused and frustrated with Diego constantly switching between being sweet to distant with her. Their relationship deals with a lot of hurdles testing their trust and loyalties, but in the end they both overcome the obstacles.
༺༻༺༻༺༻✩༺༻༺༻༺༻✩༺༻༺༻༺༻
QUOTES
Veruca: "Would you stop me, if I ever tried to leave again?"
Diego: "I would. But if you truly want to leave this place behind, then I'll follow you wherever you go."
Diego: "I think peridots have become my favorite gem."
Veruca: "Oh? What makes you say that?"
Diego: "Your eyes, love. They remind me of your eyes."
Veruca: "Goodness, you can be so corny sometimes."
Veruca: "I'm sorry, how many kids did you say you want?"
Diego: "Aha, as many as we possibly can!"
Veruca: "Yeah, we're not competing with the Weasleys. I'll settle for three, but no more than that!"
Diego: "Three is fine by me!"
Veruca: "This is the fourteenth scarf you've gotten. Are you starting a collection?"
Diego: "Oh absolutely! I'm collecting scarves made with great material and style. Here, feel this one sweetheart. The fabric used for this is quite soft and the color would look great with your skintone."
Diego: "You're as gorgeous as ever, Ruca."
Veruca: "Oh stop it—, you spoil me too much. I don’t need all these jewelry."
Diego: "You should get used to it. I plan to spoil you for as long as I live. Nothing but the best for you."
Diego: "Mi cielo, I know you wanted to teach them young… but did you really have to blow up the wall?"
Veruca: "Our daughters are naturals! But, I guess I can start training them outside by using those old trees as training targets."
Diego: “Eres la música de mi corazón”
Veruca: “Is ceol mo chroí thú”

Book 4:
Romina held her tongue until the moment she got back home. Then, she let it all out. She had a lot of time to digest Rolf's confession on the train ride home and it helped her sort some of her feelings out. The truth of the matter is that she was angry. She was so, so angry.
As soon as she was home, she told her aunt and uncle everything. Needless to say, Sage and Lyonel were in a state of shock. It was clear to Romina that they never expected her to find out, and that just made her even angrier.
"So what, you expected me to live in the dark about this my whole life?" Her dark eyes shifted between the two adults incredulously. "Seriously?"
"I didn't know they had a child," Lyonel said, though it sounded like he was speaking to Sage rather than their expectant niece.
"We never really looked back..." Sage said, meeting Romina's gaze. "Sweetheart, we're sorry—"
"Are you?" Romina cut in sharply. "Because it sounds like you were never going to tell me! It looks like you were intending on lying to me for the rest of my life! How dare you!"
"Romina, watch your tone," warned Lyonel.
"My tone?" Romina was once again incredulous. "Are you kidding me!? You're going to reprimand me about my tone when I just told you that I know that I have a bloody cousin, grandparents, aunts and uncles!? My tone is what worries you right now!?"
"Romina, let's try to calm down," Sage said and moved towards Romina. The girl took the same steps back from her aunt. "Romina, please—"
"NO! According to Rolf and his family, you guys took me away from them! You never told me about them! You didn't let them see me!"
"I had to, Romina! You were in danger!" snapped Lyonel. "After the war, the ministry wasn't exactly giving our family much consideration!"
"But later you could have said something!" Romina argued. "You could have shown me pictures of them! You could have told me about them! It would've made a huge difference in my life knowing that I had another part of a family who weren't evil!"
"I couldn't trust anyone but myself and your aunt and I am not sorry about that!"
"What your uncle means is that we didn't know who we could trust after the war," Sage cut in just as Romina was about to shout again. "A lot of families claimed that they were under the imperius curse and that's why they did whatever the Dark Lord demanded."
"But you knew that Rolf's father wasn't part of that, none of his family was except for my mother!" Romina exclaimed.
"Romina, I couldn't trust anybody. I hardly knew them at that time!" Lyonel said. "Caplan and Elora weren't exactly all for family reunions. They got married without even telling us first!"
"You could have told me," Romina insisted. "Especially when I started Hogwarts."
"We didn't know that Elora's brother had a son," Lyonel repeated, "We don't know anything about them, actually. When we made the decision to leave the wizarding community, we followed through to every extent. We cut off all ties."
"Knowing that one day I would step into it," Romina frowned. "And that's when you should have told me. 'You have grandparents. You have an aunt and an uncle. You have more family'. But you didn't. You let me believe that the only family I had were Death Eater parents. You thought that would be the best for me. To let me wallow with that burden. You have no idea what it's done to me. This whole year—" she swallowed hard, pushing down the tears she felt stinging in her eyes. "This whole year, I've had the worst thoughts about myself."
"Romina...you should have told us," Sage said with a lamenting sigh. "I knew something was wrong...you can always tell us if there's something wrong."
"Like you guys did?" Romina crossed her arms. "You didn't even bother telling them about me — how I was doing, where I was. They didn't know about me until I started Hogwarts and Rolf told them! My grandparents — they've been writing to Dumbledore about me, asking about me! It sounds like they actually want me and...I think I want to see them too."
"What?" Lyonel looked like he had heard the craziest thing in the world. It just made Romina more adamant about her idea.
"I want to meet them. I want to meet my grandmother, my grandfather...I want to see them."
"Absolutely not!" Lyonel started shaking his head. "That's not happening!"
"Lyonel—"
"And why not!?" Romina went over her aunt's voice, glaring at her uncle.
"Because I said so!"
"Oh!" Romina brought a hand to her chest. "As long as it's bloody fair!"
"I said to watch your voice—"
"I DON'T WANT TO!" Romina screamed. "I HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO MEET THE ONLY FAMILY I HAVE LEFT!"
"ROMINA—"
Romina didn't stick around to hear more as she ran towards the stairs, leaving her uncle to call after her. She did not come back down for days. Sage would try to coax her out for meals and resorted to just leaving the food outside her door.
The more that Romina thought about the situation, the stronger she felt about her decision. She had every right to meet her family, at least to ask the questions burning in her mind. How could they not allow something she had a right to? So, in the next days, she thought about her options. And she came up with a simple one, albeit a little out there.
Rolf,
I'm not going to lie, I didn't really see myself writing to you this early into break. It's been hard deciding if I'm upset or not with you, but I'm starting to look at the bigger picture here. I told my aunt and uncle about you, and what you told me. They weren't happy, unsurprisingly. My uncle is taking it the worst. He especially hated when I told him that I wanted to meet our grandparents. He's really against it.
If you were serious about, well, being cousins...help me out here. I truthfully don't know what I'm going to do if I get face to face with our grandparents but I feel like I at least deserve the opportunity to be there. I want to see them.
Romina.
Romina was nerve wrecked for the following days waiting for Rolf's response. She started wondering if she made a mistake writing to him. What if she'd pissed him off the last time they talked? Luckily, her thoughts didn't get too far from her because Rolf wrote back.
Dear Romina,
I hope you don't get mad but I told my parents about this. I think they're talking about it with grandma and grandpa right now. They told me to stay in my room. Don't worry, they'll figure it out. It's different now that you want to come. I think before they left all this alone because they didn't want to overwhelm you. Aren't they lucky I'm around?
Romina had actually laughed at that part. It almost felt like nothing had changed between them and they were just friends again. Your cousins, she soon remembered. Only now it didn't feel as shocking as it had before. Now she felt glee realizing there was someone else she could talk to, and someone her own age!
Just hang tight, Romina. We'll make this work, I promise. Keep writing to me and I'll do my best from over here. Or just write for the sake of writing too. I'd like to get to know you more, if that's alright. I know your birthday's coming around in July! Mine's in March! Guess that makes me older than you!
- Rolf
Romina found solace in his letter. If he could be lighthearted and funny, then maybe things weren't all that bad. She didn't have to be so bitter because at the end of the day, she had a cousin and nobody could take that away from her. She would just have to get smarter about getting to meet the rest of her family.
~ 0 ~
Later that afternoon, Arden was in Romina's bedroom listening to everything that had happened since they returned from school. Arden was shocked that she had found out just now. She was impressed that Romina managed to keep it all under wraps.
"Seems like this year you became an expert at hiding your emotions," she gave Romina a sharp glance. "No more of that, alright?"
Romina waved her off with a dismissive hand. "Just focus! I've been trying to come up with a way to meet my grandparents. I have so many questions and they're the only one who can answer. Merlin knows aunt Sage and uncle Lyonel are very tight lipped about the families."
"Okay, so how are we going to do that?"
"We?"
"Well, you don't think you're going to do it alone, are you? Sign me up!" Arden exclaimed. Romina chuckled. "Bet we can get Harry to help us too! Does he know?"
Romina shook her head. "You're the first I've told. Well, there was also Draco but he just happened to be there."
"And he hasn't said anything yet?" Arden snorted. "Did you have to pay him millions for that?"
"No, I just asked him not to say anything until I was ready."
"Seriously?" Arden said, unconvinced. "Must have caught him on a good day then. I didn't even know he could have those."
Romina laughed. "Okay, back to the point here. I gotta meet them, Arden. I have so many things I want to ask..."
"I bet you do," Arden mused on the list Romina probably had somewhere with questions. "Well hey, why don't we see if Harry can come with us to the parlor and we can talk about all this stuff. Maybe he'll have some ideas."
Romina liked the idea. She hadn't been out since the first day they got back from Hogwarts. As far as she knew, her going out privileges hadn't been revoked and her uncle was working. Aunt Sage was softer and was trying to be the mediator between the two. So, the girls left the room and hurried down the stairs.
"Where are you headed?" Sage called from the kitchen as they crossed the living room.
"To the parlor with Harry!" Romina promptly said. "I can go there, right?"
Arden blinked at the sudden edge in Romina's tone. Even more surprising was that Sage didn't say anything about it. They were out of the house in less than a minute.
"Wow, thought you'd be grounded for sure there!" Arden said as they headed to Harry's.
"Aunt Sage is trying to keep the peace and it's frankly annoying," Romina admitted. "I wish she would just step in already and help out. She knows as much as I do that I should get to meet my other family."
They soon arrived at the Dursley residence and knocked on the front door. Dudley opened up and at the sight of the girls, he whimpered and shut the door on them.
"Uh, okay?" Arden raised an eyebrow at the closed door. "What the hell was that about?"
Romina snickered. She'd forgotten that Sirius had encouraged Harry to use his identity to scare the Dursleys into giving him more freedom and treating him better. Clearly, Harry had taken Sirius' word. She wished she could tell Arden about it but nobody was supposed to know the truth about Sirius Black, at least for the time being.
After knocking a few more times, Harry opened the door next. "Hey Rom!" he greeted. "Hey Arden! What's going on?"
"We were heading to the parlor, wanna come?" Romina said. "Or do you gotta ask for permission?"
"Nope!" Harry said with a pleasant grin. "Let's go!" He stepped out and shut the door without telling the Dursleys anything.
"What had Dudley in such a twist?" Arden asked once they were heading down the block. "He didn't even insult us today. Is he alright?"
"Ooh, he's doing just fine," Harry's grin grew wider as he glanced at Romina.
They reached the parlor soon enough and got their usual orders after greeting the owners. Since they were gone for most of the year, they only really came to the parlor during summer. Once they were sitting together, Romina told Harry about Rolf and the Scamanders.
"Woah, Rom, that's...that's big..." Harry felt bad not having something better to say. Luckily, Romina didn't seem to mind as she just nodded and agreed with him.
She glumly stuck her spoon into her ice cream. "And so, I'm stuck waiting to see if uncle Lyonel will realize that I have every right to meet my other family."
Like Arden, Harry was sure that Lyonel eventually would. "If they went to the extent of keeping you away from the wizarding society for your own good, they'll realize that meeting your family is also for your own good. Especially if what you said about them being war heroes was true."
"I really wish I had that much faith like you two," Romina said with a heavy sigh. "This year has been challenging enough."
Arden snorted. "I'll say. Sometimes, I wish I was just in a regular school. I mean at least there, I could avoid Pansy Parkinson and her jabs."
"Don't ever let Parkinson make you wish you weren't a witch," Romina promptly said. "Plus, not everyone's bad."
Arden shrugged. "Yeah, I guess."
Harry smiled at the pair. "You come over to the Gryffindor tower whenever you're that bothered, Arden."
"Oh, wouldn't that be nice," she mused. "But I don't think anybody would want me there. They barely want Romina in there and you guys love her."
"It's the prejudices they have against Slytherins," Romina sighed, very much tired of those prejudices.
"I mean, Rom, a lot of them have pretty much earned that," Harry remarked.
"A handful, Harry," Romina corrected. "I have met many people who are just there to study."
"Yeah," Arden said, "Just because you and Draco have an arch enemy relationship doesn't mean we're all the same."
Harry raised a hand to stop her from talking again. "Like you and Parkinson, I would like to avoid any conversation where Malfoy's mentioned."
Arden laughed. "Fair enough."
Romina shook her head at them both. She ate more of her ice cream, getting several brain freezes in the process, until she realized she had just stress-ate it all.
"Boy, I would not want to see you with some Fire Whiskey," Arden said when Romina pushed her ice cream glass to the side.
"Rom," Harry reached over the table for Romina's hand, "It's going to work out. I know it will."
Romina managed to smile. If Harry, who had gone through so much crap, believed in it then maybe she should too. "Thanks," she said and he patted her hand. "Since I've been locked in my room this whole — my choice, by the way —" she added as Harry gave her a look, "I started digging around the Scamander name. They seem pretty cool. They weren't kidding about being war heroes. They fought in some war before You-Know-Who's time. And they fought alongside Dumbledore."
"Wait, so he knew about your family too?" Harry blinked a few times.
"And he didn't say anything either," Romina said bitterly. "But anyways, my grandfather wrote one of our textbooks 'Fantastic Beasts and where to Find them'."
"No way—he wrote that!?" Harry paused just as he was about to have another spoonful of ice cream. Romina nodded proudly. "And Rolf never bragged about that? Wow, he really is one of the good ones."
Romina rolled her eyes at him. ""My grandmother started a fashion designing company—The Gejéls? My aunt is also part of it."
"Oooh!" Arden beamed at the idea. "Hot couture?"
Romina laughed. "Wizard's edition."
"Gotta say, that name sounds familiar, though..." But Arden couldn't quite put her finger on it yet. Romina, however, had figured it out a while ago.
"It's because that's Daphne favorite brand of robes."
"Ooooh, you're right!" Arden snapped her fingers. Daphne had countless magazines about the brand and she always boasted that it was the only brand she ever bought. "It's French! Hey, you're French, Romina."
"Half, but yeah," Romina nodded. "I've been digging through more and it's amazing, really. Rolf's dad is part of the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures department."
"Ooh, was he in on the execution of Buckbeak, then?" Arden said.
"Almost execution," Harry was happy to remind them.
"Right," Arden thanked him for the reminder. "Lucky guy!"
"Mhm..." Harry started eating his ice cream again, exchanging a brief glance with Romina who was busy smirking.
They continued to eat their ice cream until they were all done. In the meantime, they tried helping Romina out with her problems but a lot of them involved them having her go back to her aunt and uncle to talk again. Romina didn't feel sure enough of herself to have a conversation without yelling again. At the very least, Harry suggested that she write directly to her grandparents asking for help. Romina said she would think about that.
The sun was setting when they started heading back home. Harry had started talking about some plans that Ron was making for the summer.
"Ron's mentioned that the Quidditch World Cup is this year. He's inviting us to go. Think it should be interesting."
"The what?" Arden raised an eyebrow at him. Harry shrugged. Like her, he still had some things to learn about the wizarding world.
"It's like their version of the FIFA cup," Romina explained, surprising them with her knowledge. "Unlike you two, I did have some knowledge of the wizarding world, alright? It's a huge Quidditch game."
"Oh, sounds boring," Arden promptly said then glanced at Harry skeptically. "You think the Dursleys would even let you go to that?"
"Oh, I think they will," Harry said, sharing a knowing smile with Romina.
"I'm sure you'll have fun," Romina told him. "I don't know if my uncle would let me step out of the house right now."
"It's next month, who knows how things will be by then!" Harry said, bumping shoulders with her. "C'mon, Hermione said she would go. And Ginny's going too. It won't be just us boys."
Romina shrugged. It was a possibility.
"Arden, you sure you don't want to come?" Harry soon asked the brunette girl.
Arden scrunched her face. "Eh, to be honest, the only reason I watch Quidditch games is to just follow the school spirit, you know? I think this summer I'm going to focus on my violin lessons."
"Can you ask Ms. Vallow if she still has any open spots for the summer session?" Romina startled Arden with the question.
"What? Seriously?" Arden gaped. "You want to do violin lessons again?"
Romina nodded sheepishly. "I figure I might as well try to do some of that normal stuff to help me, you know, get better?"
Arden beamed. She promised Romina that she would do everything in her power to get an open spot for her. She almost lost it when Romina suggested maybe they look up a few dance classes. It was led by the same teacher.
They parted ways in front of the girls' homes and when Romina stepped inside her house, she was surprised to find her uncle home. He usually worked late. Sage was also with him in the living room. It looked like they were waiting for her.
"I told aunt Sage where I was going," Romina said as she closed the door behind her.
"You're not in trouble, dear," Sage said and motioned Romina to join them.
"Really? Cos it kind of feels like it..." she mumbled. While her aunt and uncle sat on the long couch, she took the lone couch chair.
"Romina, I want you to be perfectly honest with us here," Lyonel said, his voice implying that there would be no chance if she were to fail and lie, "Have you been writing to Abigail and Newt?"
"What?" Romina blinked a few times until the names struck. "My grandparents? No, I haven't, why?" Lyonel held a piece of parchment out to Romina. Confused, she reached over for it and saw it was a letter.
Bonjour Lyonel and Sage Oswell,
I know it has been many years since we last saw each other but I believe this is very important. We have been informed that our granddaughter Romina has expressed interest in meeting us. You can understand that this changes everything. Romina was a baby the last time we discussed this but now it is neither up to you nor us. She is the one who gets to decide and if you do not abide by her decision, I will be forced to seek legal assistance with the Ministry.
Please do not misunderstand, I know you have taken very good care of my granddaughter and I understand why it was that you took her, but now she is ready to know more about her family. She deserves to know more of the truth. Do not deny her please. Romina would be safe while she visited, and you are more than welcome to accompany her. We do not seek to take her away from you but rather we would like the same privilege you have had having her in your life.
Please, let's discuss,
Abigail Scamander
Romina couldn't find her breath for a moment after reading the letter. She went over the letter twice more, appreciating her grandmother's handwriting. It was so elegant, so...French. And she was writing on her behalf.
When Romina looked up at Lyonel and Sage, she realized they were waiting for her confession. "What — I didn't write to them!" She tossed the letter back at them and crossed her arms.
"Did you write to anyone else, sweetheart?" Sage said. Romina felt bad watching her have to pick up the letter she threw.
"Well..." she sighed, "Yeah, I wrote to Rolf."
Lyonel groaned. "I knew it—!"
"I just told him what was going on!" Romina exclaimed and frowned. "And you shouldn't get mad. I'm not asking for something impossible! You heard my grandmother, I have every right to meet them!"
"Oh for God's sake, you don't even know her!"
Romina slammed her hands on the couch armrests as she jumped from her seat. "Because you never told me about them! I don't understand how you can be angry that I want to meet part of my family!? Like — I just don't get it! What do you intend? For me to stay alone or what?"
"Romina, we just...we don't want you to get hurt..." Sage said, glancing at her husband for some help, "We have done everything we can to keep you—"
"Shielded," Romina finished for her. "I'm going to let you in on a little secret: it hasn't worked. This whole past year, I have spent it trying to look anything but Elora and Caplan. I learned how to do transfiguration on my hair just to make myself look different!"
"You did what!?" Lyonel gaped and, like her, had jumped up from the couch.
"Because I hate where I come from, alright!? And now I have the opportunity to meet people like you" — Romina gestured at them — "who are everything that my bloody parents aren't! Please don't take that from me!" She ran into Lyonel and threw her arms around him, begging him to let her go. "Please, I just want to meet them! Just for a day, please!"
Lyonel and Sage looked at each other while Romina continued to beg. In the end, hearing her almost breaking down got the best of them...and their guilt. They did what they did for her, to protect her. Everything they did in the past had always been in the name of protecting their niece. But it seemed like today, they were the ones hurting her.
"I suppose maybe we could..." Lyonel trailed off as he met Sage's gaze again. She was nodding at him. It was the right thing to do. So, with a big breath, Lyonel finally agreed to get in contact with the Scamanders.
Romina immediately pulled away from her uncle to look up at him, her eyes wide as could be. "You mean it?" Lyonel nodded, and when Romina looked over at her aunt, so was she. "I'll-I'll get to see them? I can visit them?"
"We'd have to arrange it but...I guess so," Lyonel said, "If it's what you really want—"
"Yes, yes!" Romina exclaimed. "It's definitely what I want! Yes! Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you!" She hugged him excitedly and then reached for her aunt to pull her into the hug. "Thank you so much!"
A/N:
Book 4 is where all the real fun and drama start and these coming chapters are one of my favorites. I loved, loved, fantastic beasts and I'm still so bitter that the movie series was cancelled.

Where the heck have I been??
Tumblr media
I found this old(ish) tweet by Michael Sheen.  My first thought was Michael Sheen looks good in a turtleneck.  My second thought was wait a minute, this was taken back when they were filming the show.  My third thought was wait a minute! I own that exact turtleneck (which I wear regularly now!)
(I didn’t mention it at the time but I did acquire one of Bill’s suit jackets, it’s one that he wears in eps. 403, 406, and 410—pictured below.  It’s like a grey suit but it has a rust pattern.  It happens to fit perfectly!)
Tumblr media
So I’m not dead!  I’ve been tending to some of my other fandoms, and to be honest, I’ve definitely fallen out of the Masters loop.  I haven’t seen the show in more than three years, my last rewatch being at the end of 2019.  But something the last few weeks got me reminiscing about the show and suddenly I’ve been playing catch up on all the things I’ve missed and am now just discovering.  Lizzy Caplan had a baby!  Michael Sheen had two!  Caitlin Fitzgerald had a baby and got married!  Michelle Ashford has a new movie out!
Anyway, I’m not starting another rewatch of the show just right now.  I am a firm believer in absence making the heart grow fonder, so I do know that whenever that time comes, I’ll have a blast rewatching it.  And when I do rewatch it, I’ll be sure to do something.  Maybe another episode ranking or ranking all of Bill’s bowties, I don't know.
There are just a few thoughts that do come to mind.  First, it’s no secret that I’ve made my complaints known about Showtime removing Masters from their streaming service (and by that I mean they FUCKING SUCK for doing that), but just gauging the popularity of Masters nowadays, to my horror it seems to be mostly forgotten—and that’s pretty much only because it’s not streaming anywhere.  Netflix, please, give it a chance!
Speaking of Showtime... man have they gone downhill since Masters of Sex ended.  Apparently Yellowjackets is really good, but that’s the only thing real thing they seem to have going on.  When I made a post similar to this discussing the state of Showtime, I mentioned Billions as being the one bright spot of all their program at the time... well that show has gone downhill hard.  But beyond Billions and Yellowjackets, I don’t hear anything about their other programming.  You really have to wonder just how much longer Showtime has until it’s acquired by some larger company.  Maybe then Masters of Sex will be actually featured in a streaming catalog.  Maybe they’ll even be brought back?
Regarding the Masters of Sex cancellation, I’ve definitely accepted it.  In fact, as time has gone on, the more I appreciate the ending.  I think I had it in my mind that if season five were to exist, it would chronicle their lives into the 21st century, but the more I think about it... that probably wouldn’t have been the case.  The show probably would’ve ended in the late seventies.  Chronicling three decades in ten episodes would be a nightmare, and gradually aging Michael and Lizzy would be a challenge.  In case I didn’t make it clear by ranking “The Eyes of God” as my third or fourth favorite Masters of Sex episode, I really do love the way the show ends, but what’s always bothered me was that the writers didn’t know it was going to be the end when they wrote it.
So I’m totally fine if that’s it and that’s how Masters of Sex does definitively end, but I’ve also been encouraged by Michael and Lizzy implying in some interview years ago that they’d be more than happy to come back at any given time.  So there’s always hope!

Lizzy Caplan’s Perfect Year
With her role in “Fleishman Is in Trouble,” Lizzy Caplan found a character more similar to herself than anything she’s done — and with it, the perfect experience for her first months as a new mom.
Up until now, Lizzy Caplan had avoided back-to-back projects. Not intentionally, but rather, that’s just the way things unfolded. So, of course, this year — the year she had her first child — would be the one where she bounded from a six-month shoot in New York, to immediately shoot another show in Los Angeles, to then embark on a full-on press tour.
“It’s  been a crazy year, that i’m honestly mostly very grateful for,” Caplan says. “But in this moment I’m feeling a little crazy.” On Zoom from her home in L.A., Caplan is preparing to wrap work on the television adaptation of “Fatal Attraction” before boarding a flight to New York to do press for “Fleishman Is in Trouble,” her new series. Adapted from New York Times writer Taffy Brodesser-Akner’s bestseller of the same name, the story follows Toby, a doctor in his 40s with two kids living in New York who is finding his footing through his divorce from Rachel when she suddenly goes missing. The story is narrated by Libby, Toby’s old friend who has moved to the suburbs with her family and, through supporting Toby on his saga, goes through her own life-questioning crisis. Jesse Eisenberg and Claire Danes are Toby and Rachel; Caplan, for her part, knew she was meant to play Libby
“I love this book. If you like the book I think it’s safe to say you’re going to like the show.
“It’s the truest adaptation of a book I’ve ever seen,” Caplan says.
She’d heard through her agents that the series adaptation was floating around, and once she learned a producer she’d worked with on “Masters of None” was involved, she approached her for the role of Libby.
“I find the idea of narrating a whole show very appealing, especially if it’s done in a way that works and I think that it actually works really beautifully [here],” Caplan says. “I like the idea of being part of something where you’re presented with a character who you have some ideas about and then hopefully by the end those ideas have been upended or deepened or altered in numerous ways. I didn’t really identify with the Rachel character ever — it was always Libby. We have a similar upbringing, there was enough to tap into.”
She also was interested in Libby’s status as a woman who left the city for the suburbs to raise children and is now feeling adrift.
“I was pregnant when I started speaking to them about it so it was sort of staring down the barrel of this next chapter of life and domesticity and it felt like the right time to do it,” she says. “On one hand, it made sense to me in a very instantaneous way, because it’s about this girl who has these friends and they met in Israel and theres this Jewish upbringing. It was like the East Coast version of my upbringing. I had these friends, I was definitely raised Jewish, I went to Israel, I did all these things. There was this instant familiarity with who this character is, combined with, honestly, feeling disconnected with the ennui of the suburbs and the kids and the long marriage and feeling really trapped and giving up a career to move to the suburbs and raise these children — that doesn’t mirror my life at all,” Caplan continues. “So it was this weird combination of something that felt more familiar than anything else I’ve ever read, and then this other side of it that I can identify with as a potential nightmare.”
Due to timing of her pregnancy and the pandemic, Caplan says she’d been holed up at home for plenty of time and hadn’t worked for a bit.
“For a lot of actresses, certainly for a lot of my actress friends, there’s this weird period when you’re about to have a baby and you don’t really know what your life as an actress will look like,” she says. “I didn’t know what to hope for, I wasn’t trying to fully identify what I was going for and was trying to keep it open and loose, but to be honest, this was the version of first year of motherhood that was beyond my wildest dreams. It was perfect, it was ideal.”
Coming back to L.A. and immediately getting out of the suburban-New-Yorker-mom character and into “Fatal Attraction” mode was just the culture shock she was looking for.
“For me personally, I’m happiest when I can be bouncing around and doing the most disparate types of roles, just changing it up. And there couldn’t be more of a whiplash change up from Libby to Alex in ‘Fatal Attraction,’” Caplan says. “Libby’s physicality, she’s somebody who’s sort of given up. She’s past the point of caring about her appearance and she’s fully enmeshed in this domesticated suburban life, and that felt very right for my headspace at the beginning of that. And it’s been really great to know that I have to turn that off and be the complete opposite right in the moment that I probably needed to feel more like my previous self.”

Carewyn’s Outfit Inspiration // Diego’s Outfit Inspiration // Inspiration for the Artwork and Gif’s Visuals in Particular
x~x~x~x
Veruca McQuaid @ariparri would not be the first person to wonder, upon meeting the King and Queen of Hearts, how they ended up as co-monarchs. The two truly were complete opposites, personality-wise -- Diego was flashy, sociable, optimistic, laidback, and outgoing, while Carewyn was modest, proud, methodical, uptight, and perfectionistic. And yes, when they first collided at university, those personality differences did make it hard for them to see eye to eye, at first.
At the start of her first term, Carewyn had only just gotten off the train from the Country of Spades, crossing the border into the Kingdom of Hearts so as to attend the university on the far-off coastline. Truthfully Carewyn wouldn’t have minded going to school back at home...but with how things were going back home, she, her brother, and her mother had all decided they should leave. With the roads out of town closing one by one, however, the best way to do that ended up being to find covert ways for them to all leave one by one, rather than try to aggressively make a break for it all together. Carewyn’s opening, it so happened, ended up being her acceptance to the university across the border in the Kingdom of Hearts; soon Lane would be accepted for a work visa for the museums there and be able to join her, and Jacob would follow after. And, Carewyn tried to reassure herself, this arrangement probably was better in the long run -- earning recognition and a good education from such a well-regarded university as the one in the Kingdom of Hearts could only make it easier for her to achieve her dreams. She wanted to know all about the law in various parts of Cinderhaven -- perhaps then she could achieve some real good for others.
The most popular freshman in Carewyn’s year ended up being Diego Caplan, the third of six heirs to the most well-regarded winery in all of Cinderhaven. Before long the music and dance major won over the vast majority of his peers with his amiability and charm -- the new transfer student from the Country of Spades, however, was kind of bewildered by him. His overdramatic way of speaking and grandiose body language...it almost made her want to laugh, it was so theatrical.
Is this how all people around here act? Carewyn couldn’t help but wonder to herself.
They didn’t seem to -- honestly, most of the students Carewyn had met thus far had given her the side eye, when she arrived. She strongly suspected it was due to her attire -- she’d worn her black dress because it was the nicest one she had, but she supposed, it did look a bit austere compared to many of the other dresses she saw her classmates wearing. Carewyn wished she’d had enough money to buy something pretty like that...
Diego, for his part, greeted the transfer with his usual charms -- which, in this case, ended up being a theatrical monologue proclaiming to the other far less friendly students the value of welcoming new people and faces and celebrating their unique and diverse beauty. And the Kingdom of Hearts does esteem beauty -- beauty and love, above all things -- and this maiden was certainly both brilliant and beautiful, was she not? Therefore, she was more than a proper fit, for their university.
Carewyn couldn’t help but raise her eyebrows, listening to Diego prattle on. She could tell that this guy was trying to be helpful -- but the way he gushed about her when he didn’t even know her seemed incredibly disingenuous to Carewyn. And when the crowd had dispersed, she was sure to tell him that, very quietly but firmly.
“Thank you for thinking of standing up for me...but truly, it’s not necessary. I intend to prove myself on my own merits...so please, withhold your compliments until they are sincere.”
Tumblr media
Diego was utterly horrified by the suggestion. He’d been nothing BUT sincere! (He always was, when it came to complimenting people!) Carewyn, however, seemed to completely dismiss this as she strode off across the grounds toward her first class.
“Don’t be ridiculous. I’ve done nothing worth praising yet.”
She would, though, Carewyn thought to herself. She would. And when she did, she’d finally be someone she could be proud of being -- someone who could do good for others and help people, in a way only she could.
She would be truly great.

Smiffina Episodes - Episode 387
15 episodes until Smithy is free!
Zain goes to see Smithy in prison for visiting time. He's wearing a yellow strap that marks him out as a vulnerable prisoner and he's barged into in the queue by others but manages to keep a lid on his temper. Unfortunately Zain has no good news for him, Baker and Finney are still nowhere to be seen. Smithy's got a bail hearing that afternoon but it doesn't look hopeful...

The focus has moved onto Carl Caplan who was the 'witness' now, though the financial check and background history has found nothing so far. Zain insists they didn't dig far enough and that he's a plant. Jack puts Zain and Mickey together and asks Mickey to keep an eye on him to ensure he doesn't get things arse about face and make things worse in his attempt to get Pete Larson.
Mickey gently explains that Caplan could be kosher and that they shouldn't close their minds. Zain won't listen and goes down to speak to Yvonne to ask her for 'the dregs'. Yvonne is offended and says they don't have dregs and Zain apologises and says it's not a taxing job and whoever they can spare he'll be happy with. She sends Tony and Reg. Zain tells them to keep their eye on Caplan and tells them that he wants to know who he meets and what he does. "Don't worry, it's in safe hands!" Reg smiles. "Yvonne didn't choose us for nothing!"
Neil and Jack call Mickey in to tell them that they've spotted Pat Gannon - previously known as Matt Winney and suspected of being involved in Louise's death - and want to run the images through facial recognition to make sure it is him. Unfortunately he's not listed in the results.
Outside the office that Caplan works, Reg bores Tony solidly by claiming that people won't be able to have fascinating discussions like they do anymore soon because they don't have the attention span now with society being so 'fast' with everything - like fast food, email and similar.
They update Zain by telling him that so far Caplan hasn't done much except go to the supermarket. What is interesting however is that they tell him that he received a telephone call on the way back telling him to go buy some milk for the office... this telephone call was to a mobile, a mobile Caplan insists he didn't own! Zain returns to tell Neil who backs up the memory that he said he didn't have one in his witness statement.
Zain demands Caplan's mobile from him. At first he insists he doesn't have one and tells him that he's gotten it since his statement, however it looks about three years old, 'It was cheap.' a bit battered, 'I dropped it' and he threw the receipt away and can't remember where he got it from despite only having it a few days. Zain insists they can prove he's had it longer than a few days and Caplan insists that he got it from a mate in a pub... but he doesn't know the name of this mate... and actually he's not a mate, he's just someone he sees around. Mickey gently reminds Zain to take it easy and Caplan tells them that he thinks it was 'off the back of the lorry'. Zain simply smiles and arrests him for dealing in stolen goods.
At the station he tells Jack that it was only a tenner and that's the only reason he suspected it might not be quite legal and that he's only there because he gave a witness statement for the car accident and believes he's being harassed because of it now because he's being followed! Jack tells him he's searching his flat for stolen property as they speak and Caplan insists he'll be searching for other things because he's got it in for him!
Zain tells Mickey he'll explain looking through his paperwork as saying he was checking for stolen credit cards. Zain gets angry and sweeps things off his desk, breaking some glass. Mickey reassures him that they're both on the same side. They try to look for a landline and can't find one... he must have had a mobile for longer!
Frank growls at them for interfering and bringing Caplan in. Zain tells him it's created a breakthrough as Caplan insisted he didn't have a mobile - but at home he doesn't have a landline. Who doesn't have one or the other now? (or rather back then I guess more with the landlines!) Frank says it doesn't prove anything but Zain points out that it proves he's a liar and it discredits him. Frank insists that he doesn't want Zain anywhere near Caplan anymore and that Zain is simply unpicking MIT and the DPS's 'good work'. (ha!)
Zain walks straight out of Jack's office and tells the FIU unit that he's been given permission by Frank to reactivate the financial check on Caplan and asks them to check for new payments. Mickey tries to distract him with a burglary case but his telephone rings - a call back from the FIU. Caplan has received a loan from a finance company for £25K but Zain is adamant that it's actually a payment. He tries to get Mickey to come with him and he refuses. "You don't want to upset Uncle Jack?" "No, I don't." Zain ups the emotional blackmail and Mickey sighs and tells him he'll simply cover for him.
As Zain returns he finds Caplan cleaning up after his earlier visit. He confronts Caplan about the loan. Caplan tells him it came from a local company and Zain just shrugs saying Larson must be connected to the company then. "I'd like to be part of your exciting plot but I'm not." Caplan sighs, telling him he simply got a loan to cover his expensive outgoings. Zain won't buy it and says that he believes that he'd do anything to protect his kids and look after them and suggests that that is why Caplan got involved with Pete Larson.
Mickey tries to cover for Zain but it's too late, Frank called FIU for a update and was told Zain already had it - and about the financial changes. Jack couldn't care less about Zain's dodgy means of finding it out, he simply wants to know where Zain is because if Zain is intimidating him it'll ruin the case.
Caplan cracks as Zain continues and tells him he was a good dad before and he will be again as he was getting back on his feet. He tells him he made a few mistakes but he won't be drawn on what it was. He says instead that he knows Zain wants him to lie that he didn't see Smithy.
Jack and Mickey are on the way to Caplan's as Frank finds out and joins them. Zain eats away at Caplan and gets him to admit that he's a gambler and he's taken a loan out to meet his debts because he's behind on his maintenance. Zain softens his tone and starts gently working away at him that someone found he was vulnerable and knew he'd do anything for cash... but before he can continue Frank arrives with the others and orders him outside.
At the station, Frank and Jack bollock Zain with Frank telling him he's messed things up for Smithy before Jack sends him home.
At court Smithy updates Yvonne, Adam and Zain that of course - he did not get given bail. Adam tries to cheer him up by telling him Gina will be back soon and she's dying to see him. Zain lingers behind the other two and has to reluctantly tell Smithy he's been thrown off the case. He tells him not to give up. Smithy scoffs.... "*I* haven't."

Note
With the music asks, I'd like to ask prompts: 1, 3, 11, 19, 23, 26, and 30!
1:A song you like with a color in the title
3:A song that reminds you of summertime
11:A song that you never get tired of
19:A song that makes you think about life
23:A song that you think everybody should listen to
26:A song that makes you want to fall in love
30:A song that reminds you of yourself
1: It's All Over Now, Baby Blue by Bob Dylan, but specifically this version. I haven't formally posted my Haven music playlists anywhere (I will do that.... soon......) but this is one of the first songs on the arc 1 playlist. You can think of it as Anathema and C!Moth's meetcute song : P
3: The Beast of Pirate's Bay by Voltaire. A girl I went to summer camp with... gosh, at least a decade ago now--taught it to all of us since we didn't have access to music that wasn't us singing. I also learned about Homestuck and bisexuality from her, so, you know, pretty much all the good parts of my life I found originally through meeting her that summer. Wiki, if you're still out there, thank you.
11: I could be wrong, because I haven't known it that long, but I think I'm going to go with Blacksoul by Onya. I could say more about it but honestly just listen to it. It's beautiful.
19: God Fearing, Sea Faring Man by The Accidentals. I listened to the album this is from a lot back when I first stumbled onto it, and while I think the band has now largely disavowed it it remains very deep in my heart. This specific song has stuck with me especially, I think because there's a kind of... the word that's coming to mind is grace, it feels like there's a kind of grace to this song. It feels like a moment of clarity. If I had to claim the meaning of life was buried in any one song, I would pick this one.
23: I'm going to cheat here and say an artist, because so far as I know they only ever released a handful of songs, most or all of which I try to link people to every so often because they're not otherwise available. I'm talking about superedge, who was a fanmusician back in 2015 or so. I hope they're still creating somewhere, but they've left behind some of my favorite songs in the world and I'm grateful that I happened to find them when I did.
26: Ben Caplan's cover of Lovers' Waltz by A. A. Bondy. The original is also solid but something about Ben Caplan's version really particularly speaks to me. I think according to the lyrics this song is actually about dying together? Which makes this a weird choice I guess but it feels in a way comforting, and I think fits the prompt better, because I have lots of people I love! I don't need a generic love song! But this song feels deeper and more permanent, in a way that's at least as appealing as it is scary.
30: You know, I have a whole collection of books that are me; you'd think I'd have a collection of songs that are me. But I don't. I think I have a tendency to shift songs from me to my (or others') characters, or to strongly associate songs with the circumstances under which I first listened to them. I've been combing through my library trying to think of anything and I could make some cases but most of them are weak. So I'm going somewhere very personal and emotional, and I trust you'll understand.
When I was 17, I was in a really bad place. It was, I think, the worst year of my life bar none. I'll spare you the details, but one day after a really intense couple of weeks, I played nice until I was given back my ipod. The moment it was in my hands, I grabbed my bike and fled to the library. I cried the whole way there, and I listened to this song, The Bust from The New Albion Radio Hour by Paul Shapera. This wasn't the song I came to identify with at the time--that would be The Wasteland, from the same album--but to this day, I can't listen to it without remembering that scared teenager.

1, 2, 16, and 17 for the music asks 💜
A song you like with a colour in the title
Old Yellow Bricks by Arctic Monkeys.
2. A song you like with a number in the title
Gate 21 by Serj Tankian.
16. One of your favorite classical songs
My absolute fave remains to be Gnossienne 3 by Erik Satie for several years now. There's something ethereal in his music.
17. A song that would sing a duet with on karaoke
That's a difficult one! Realistically speaking, none, I can't sing at all. Perhaps, if I could, it would be What Love Can Heartbreak Allow by Ben Caplan for the song asking to be sung by three people.
