Vivere Backstory Snippet - Unraveling - Revun

As I'm dming for the Vivere Campaign, I've been occasionally writing little fanfics of my player's characters for fun. I've decided to share them every so often here since I've been having fun writing them!

First up: Revun

Basic character context:

An intro to the campaign. Some context to Mylene and Revun's relationship. Some context to Revun and Beyleth's relationship. This takes place months prior to the beginning of the campaign, and is the last night that Revun sees both Beyleth and Mylene alive. After several months acting as a guard to Mylene's family's vineyard, it turns out that Revun's mercenary group, the Ruby Syndicate, were hired for an ulterior purpose...

Mylene turned to look back at Revun, the moonlight haloing her soft brown hair into an ethereal silver. Her expression was mischievous, and she opened up her mouth–

The night was splintered into shards by a scream which abruptly cut off in a way that was not natural.

"Mylene–" Revun started to order, but her head had already swiveled to look back in the direction that they had just come from.

"What was that?" she quietly asked, but the rhetorical question hung in the air as she had already started to move, to slip off and go towards the sound.

Revun moved before his brain processed it, drawing his sword with one motion and grabbing her wrist with another.

"Don't," he whispered to her, his heartbeat echoing in his ears. His eyes darted around, along the walls; how many were there? Was this a random breaking and entering or planned? No one should have gotten this close to the vineyard without the Ruby Syndicate sending out an alarm.

Unless this was planned, and whoever it was was good enough to get around the others.

The two stared at each other, Mylene's eyes wide and scared yet her brow set and her jaw clenched in that stubborn little manner that until tonight had always made Revun laugh.

There's another scream, followed by angry shouting. Revun unconsciously shifted stances, his tail lashing once, but even as his gaze strayed for just one second, Mylene grabbed at his hand with her free one and wrenched herself free. She was sprinting away before Revun could react, too conscious of the sword to jerk around and possibly hurt her. He bit down a cry after her, because no, he couldn't risk alerting anyone to their location, he couldn't draw attention to her like that.

He cursed silently at whatever gods are watching and took off after her, sparing only a quick glance at the bloodied corpse of the groundskeeper left to bleed out right by the garden's gate.

Past the garden was chaos; one of the stable boys was trying to calm a rearing horse even as a figure in a hood darted around the horse, the moon pointing an accusing finger at the flash of metal and the telltale copper tang in the air giving away the rest. It was enough to give Revun pause, his eyes adjusting automatically to the dimmer lighting. Several other servants were trying to flee, but foreign figures flickering through the darkness were making quick work of the unarmed group.

Mylene.

Revun started to run again, only making a quick check for each corpse that laid at his boots. The house. She must have headed for the house, surely she headed for the house, she was smart and quick and could have made it to the house why did he look away from her for even a second–

He wrenched the door open, the lock already broken, and caught a glimpse of the back of her nightgown and now-loose hair as she turned a corner. Thank the gods. But the relief was fragile, short-lived; the house was not silent; there was loud banging and clattering echoing down every corridor, in every gaping and dark doorway.

"M– stop!" he dared to call. His mentor's voice echoed in his ears, no names. Nothing to identify you with.

But it worked, and she turned to look at him, skidding to a halt as her chest heaved for breath.

"My family–"

"It's not safe–"

"–have to make sure they're okay!"

Revun shook his head. "Beyleth will protect them– please, I promise we'll meet up with them, we need to go–"

Mylene drew in a ragged breath. Revun reached out, offering her his hand opened upwards, but she shook her head slowly at first and then harder. There's a scream, and then the two were running again, down the corridor, past the wine cellar, beyond the kitchen–

Mylene kept going. Revun did not.

There were bodies, in the kitchen.

But towering over them were two people, two distinct heights, one slightly taller and the other just shorter than Beyleth. And Revun would know, because he had seen him standing to Beyleth's right himself.

"Cordell-" his relief was cut as sharply as the bloodied knife he saw Cordell wrench out of the cook's chest.

…Oh.

Cordell and– the taller one would be Allumin, he recognized that slender build now that he was looking– straightened up, and Revun took an uncertain step back as Cordell grinned at him.

"Here to join the party? We're just finishing up this floor– hey!" Cordell shouted after him, but Revun was gone, moving, scrambling for the stairs that Mylene had already started to scale two at a time. "Revun!"

They made it to the top, past the family portrait, down the last hallway where more ominous new dark splatters adorned doorways. To the master suite, and Revun pushed himself harder, faster, closing the gap and grabbing Mylene by the shoulder–

"Stop, don't…" he trailed off as he stumbled to a stop, barely managing not to bowl her over.

Beyleth had often rapped his knuckle against Revun's horns before a mission, had told him to do well with a calm, steady look and a small nod.

That was the same expression he wore now. Calm. Confident. He emerged out of the darkness of the bedroom, the candles inside all blown out just like the rest of the house. He carried one of his blades in each hand.

There was blood dripping down them.

Mylene made a small sound, almost like she was choking, and that was all the time Revun had to brace himself before she screamed, throwing herself forward. Revun dropped his sword in his haste to yank her back, to hold onto her–

Beyleth sighed. "You're too loud," he said, sounding disapproving. Gone was the clinical business tone he had held with Mylene, his more casual, caustic manner of speaking fully coming to the surface. "They can't hear you from that realm, anyways, little miss."

Mylene went silent again, leaning against Revun's chest suddenly, and Beyleth glanced up to look Revun in the eyes. "Hold her still for me."

Like he was asking for Revun to pass the whetstone around the fire.

He would never know what Mylene's expression was at that moment. If she doubted him, or hated him for what he had brought as company to her doorstep. All he could focus on was the way her body was still limp and unguarded in his hands.

His eyes slid back to his mentor, but Revun couldn't think. There's just static. His mouth tasted like smoke, and he rasped out a question. "Why didn't you tell me?" He shoved Mylene behind him, and luckily she didn't fight him on it, mutely letting Revun protect her. "Beyleth. What… why?"

Beyleth raised an eyebrow at him. "Look at yourself, boy. Then tell me why." His eyes narrowed, his face darkening. "Now. Either you hold her still, Revun, or kill her by your own hands. Now."

Revun couldn't reply, couldn't voice his dissent. But he could give it, and give it he did, a quick shake of his head sealing it all into blood.

Beyleth had long called Revun inhuman. It had been both a praise and a colder statement of fact. But as Revun watching Beyleth tower over him, his mouth drawing open into a snarl, Beyleth looked far more inhuman than Revun had ever been.

Revun dove to grab his dropped sword just as Beyleth swung.

Some more characters from my Skullstone-focused Exalted campaign. Having lot’s of fun making zombie freaks. More info below the cut:

Bala’Bala Meltdown: (she/her) A teenage Liminal exalt who joined a local crime syndicate. Her stitched-together body has blue fish scales in some areas and secretes acidic ooze. She can spit acid and even use less caustic forms of it to make “spray paint” graffiti. Her tail fin can detach and be thrown like a boomerang. She thinks she’s the coolest kid on the block.

River Dragon Smile: (he/him) A veteran enforcer for the Golden Carp Triad. Years of doing the gang’s dirty work has started to wear him down, and some say he’s gone soft. Back in the day, he mentored one of the party members when te was in the gang. Nowadays he’s taken to mentor Bala’Bala—and sees her as something of a daughter to him.

Golden Carp Surmounts the Dragon’s Gate: (he/him) AKA Goldie, he’s the boss of the Golden Carp Triad, an arrogant shithead who lords his wealth and success over his foes (and even his friends). What many people don’t realize is that he’s an Abyssal exalted! Whether or not he works with the Silver Prince—deathlord of Skullstone—is unclear. He used to be in a relationship with one of the party members, and has harangued tyr into reenlisting with the Triad with some mindfreak psyche magic.

Coyote Feasts on What Remains: (he/him) AKA Coyote. An Abyssal exalt and the headmaster of Skullstone’s school of necromancy, the Obelion. His specialty is summoning undead spirits and minions. A liminal member of the party was apparently created from the body of Coyote’s twin sister, and he’s furious to discover that.

Flamenca de la Fortuna Sombria: (she/her) AKA Lady Flamenca. Another of Skullstone’s Abyssals, she’s a celebrity dance star—performing to sold out crowds in the famed Theatre Macabre. Her dance crew is made entirely of liminal exalted, who are all completely obsessed with her. Since liminals resurrect after dying, part of her act involves tearing her entarogue to shreds with her Swaying Grass Style.

Chapter 9 — Time In A Bottle

“So you and I are good?” Sasha asked.

“We're fine,” Spacebreather said, “you only did as I asked. I'll just… need a few days to recover.”

Sasha looked slightly hurt, but understood. She slipped out the front door without saying goodbye, and Pilar let out a sigh.

“The hell was that about?” Ariadne asked.

Pilar smiled. Sasha had done beautifully. “It's the new vaccines. She was worried I'd have a bad reaction.” Ariadne could usually tell when she was lying, so on the rare occasion she needed to lie to her, Pilar found the best method was to do so using only truthful statements. “How are you feeling?”

“A little bit of a headache, but what else is new?” Ariadne replied.

“I'm gonna crash for an hour,” Pilar said. “Feel free to join me when you're done.”

“When I'm done?” Ariadne asked.

“Right,” Pilar said, remembering that Ariadne was still a bit disoriented. “Alicia's coming over, said she needed to talk to you. Sounded real important. I don't want to be anywhere near it.”

“Great,” Ariadne sighed, “a 'we need to talk' with no clear topic. Best medicine for a headache.”

Pilar went upstairs, and Ariadne slunk into her easy chair. Things were getting quite a bit tense in their little hidden city. Everyone was comfortable physically. She'd managed to recreate most of the creature comforts they'd enjoyed at home, and retrieved enough of the supplies from her hidden caches to make Xiagu twice as fortified, and twice as invisible, as Ship Trap had ever been.

Nonetheless, people were restless, and they were starting to get a bit stir-crazy. The only people who'd left Xiagu were the people who'd accompanied Ariadne on supply runs. What little news they'd been able to get from the outside indicated that the Nameless' mercenary forces remained posted around Ship Trap, while the Nameless and Nicks had begun a campaign of terror across the system. The Rizzo Crime Family once again reigned supreme in the Colonial Moons as Nicks took control of the entire criminal underworld and ruled it with a bloody iron fist.

The Nameless let her run the criminal operation unbothered, for the most part. Reports indicated she was focusing her efforts on finding Ariadne, but, to her frustration, had been unable to track down anybody who knew her current whereabouts, even with her psychic abilities.

Due to the complete lack of vigilante action, the news was reporting that the terrorist and pirate known as Ariadne was most likely dead, and that the new Rizzo syndicate had risen to fill the power vacuum left by her death.

Ariadne wanted to do something about this, but all of her energy had gone into defense and intel. Her offensive capabilities were a fraction of what they'd once been, and she'd sacrificed much of her fleet in the escape attempt.

Ariadne took Alicia's coat on her arrival, and for the first time noticed the streaks of silver coiled into her short locs. It wasn't out of the ordinary to see the occasional gray hair, Alicia was nearing 40, and had lived a more stressful life than most people her age. Still, Ariadne could've sworn she didn't have those yesterday.

“Do you even know what a sacrifice you're asking of us?” Alicia asked her. “Have you got a clue what this is doing to your crew?”

“Keeping them alive,” Ariadne replied plainly.

“At what point is that going to stop being enough?” Alicia asked. “At what point do you as a captain have some responsibility to deliver more than survival to your crew?”

This stung a bit.

“What would you have me do?” Ariadne asked facetiously. “You want me to move on Ship Trap, now, when she's got all the firepower and we're kneecapped? You want me to bring the girls out on a rip-roaring adventure so the Nameless can track us down and pluck our location from our minds? We barely got out last time. Wasn't that traumatic enough without having to try it again?”

“You want to talk about trauma?” Alicia asked. “You have a few hundred orphans and runaways out there who lost their home again and have no idea what you're planning to do to get it back. You don't think that's traumatic?”

“I would change it if I could,” Ariadne said, “but we're up against a telepathic enemy here. The phrase 'need to know basis' has never been more vital.”

“Then tell them that,” Alicia said. “Tell them something. Or, hell, tell them that we're building a new home here and do something to make it feel like a home. Don't you remember how Pilar made Sasha feel, keeping her cooped up 'for her own safety?' Did you learn nothing from that?”

“Pilar was overcompensating for misplaced guilt. I'm asking people to make sacrifices to protect us from an existential threat to this crew.”

“Like I said. Do you even understand the level of sacrifice you're asking for?” Alicia asked.

Ariadne considered the example of Pilar and Sasha, and reached into the well of things she currently felt most guilty about, to defend herself against the accusation.

“Ghostrunner understands why the investigation has to be put on pause for now,” Ariadne said, “and I know the rest of them are going a bit stir-crazy, but there's really not much I can do about that, short of letting a bunch of teenagers out of here with a target on their back and a serial killer on the loose.”

“Yeah, that's quite a bind, and I feel for you. I do.” Alicia said. “But do you feel for me?”

Ariadne looked up at her.

“You have your wife upstairs and family living right next door,” she said. “Who have I got? See, I used to go for drinks every month with my best friend looking for a little companionship. Can't even think about companionship now, since I'm the 38 year old woman playing caretaker to a few hundred teenagers. You want to talk about trauma? Imagine what Baltimore is going through, what my parents are going through, with me going dark for six months, after the last time I went missing. Thank god they know I'm alive this time, for whatever that's worth. Have I even crossed your mind in all this?”

Ariadne was speechless. “Alicia, I'm sorry,” she said. “I've been… taking you, and all you do for us, for granted.”

“Yeah, you have been.” Alicia said. “You know I love this crew, right?”

“Honestly, I don't know that there's anyone more devoted to our cause,” Ariadne admitted.

“And you know I love you, Ariadne,” Alicia said. “You've been like a… well, you're not gonna want to hear what you've been like to me, but I think you do know.”

Ariadne did know, and it made her immensely uncomfortable, but she also felt a slight warmth at the thought. She and Alicia had become experts at not discussing this, but they were both acutely aware that they were inextricably bonded. Alicia had been held captive by the same parents Ariadne had fled from in her youth. Ariadne didn't know how Alicia could stand to look at her, a young woman who wore the faces of the people who'd tormented her for a year.

Alicia, on the other hand, saw Ariadne as a kindred spirit. Another soul that the butchers had dug their hooks into, and had bravely broken free. When she was young, Alicia imagined she would probably be married and have children of her own by the time she was 30. She had, instead, been forced into hiding, living on the run, taking on jobs that didn't ask too many questions about who you were or where you were from. Other than her imprisonment, those ten years were the worst time of her life, but when she finally found her way out of the darkness, she found a new purpose.

The person she'd become, the person Ramos and Ramos had forced her to become, was no longer suited for mainstream society. She wouldn't ever be fully comfortable getting a desk job, going on awkward first dates, getting a house in the burbs and starting a family. So what luck, she thought, that the end of her exile came just as she met a child who had also been warped by Ramos and Ramos, forced to become a person who could get by without ever having to count on the support of adults.

They both knew they were broken in the same way, by the same people, and while they knew better than to vocalize this to one another, they didn't feel broken when they were with one another. Ariadne couldn't get the childhood she knew she should've had, but at least she had an adult who understood what she'd been through, who she could count on to be there for her, to make sure she was safe, and loved. Alicia couldn't get back the life that Ramos and Ramos had taken from her, but she could build something new out of the ashes, something that better fit the person she'd become.

Though Ariadne couldn't bring herself to say so, they both also secretly took just the little bit of wicked pleasure in thinking of one another as family— their love for one another was, in a way, their last revenge on Raul and Rosario, now not only dead, but made completely obsolete by a superior surrogate.  

Ariadne appreciated Alicia not saying any of this, but there was no ambiguity between them as to the nature of their relationship.

“And I know you wouldn't be putting us through this if it weren't necessary,” Alicia continued, maintaining her practiced affectionate-lecture tone, “but this thing we're doing has consequences you might not have considered, and I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't make you aware of them.”

“So what should we do?” Ariadne said. “What… what do I do, Alicia?”

“Ari, you have more focus than anyone I've ever met,” Alicia said, “when you set yourself on a course, there's no obstacle that can shake you from it. You just put everything you've got into overcoming every hurdle. It's one of your greatest strengths, but left unchecked, it gives you this… tunnel vision that blinds you to everything else going on. This thing we're doing, rebuilding our strength to take on the Nameless, it's important, but in the meantime, everybody's going a bit crazy because their captain is closed off to them. Your mind is one of the greatest problem-solving tools in the universe, but we don't just need a problem-solver right now. We need a leader, and a sense of stability.”

Ariadne sighed. “They think I let their world end.”

Alicia put her hand on Ariadne's shoulder. “Show them you didn't. You've got them putting their lives on pause while you deal with this, when they need to understand that life keeps moving even when it seems like the world's ended.”

“How do I do that without putting us all at risk?”

“Give them something to do. You need laborers rebuilding our fleet. You need engineers working on devices to shield us from telepathy. You need to stop replicating MREs and start replicating raw ingredients so that Cookie can get people to work in the kitchens. And most of all? You've got a city of teens out there. They need entertainment. Live theatre, organized sports. Right now, they feel like they're stuck in a refugee camp because you're running this place like a refugee camp. Start running it like the city it was meant to be. Build a home here.”

Ariadne smiled. “Honestly, that might be the first hopeful thing I've heard in months,” she said. “Magenta's got a knack for the theatrical, I say we let her start putting on shows. There's those gravball courts Sweettalk pointed out, I'm sure we could get them up and running again. Plus, this place had more than its share of restaurants, maybe we can get Cookie's apprentices set up in some of them, see if we can get a little variety in our meals.”

“I'll take that as an order,” Alicia said, “and I'll see to it all those ideas are implemented.”

“No sneaky business, either, darlin'. I appreciate that we're pretending all of that was my idea, but I want you taking the credit you deserve,” Ariadne said. “… and what about you? We can't contact our friends on the outside beyond what's absolutely necessary to let them know we're alive. I can't do very much about your… companionship issue.”

Alicia laughed. “Yeah, I've gone longer without getting laid. I'll be fine,” she said, “but I need my friend back.”

“I can't let you see Flax,” Ariadne said, pained. “It'd put you both at too much risk.”

“I'm not talking about Flax,” Alicia said. “I need you back. When's the last time we really talked about something other than work and morale problems? When's the last time you, me, and Spacebreather had a few too many drinks and sang a little too loud? When's the last time you let yourself blow off a little steam?”

Ariadne laughed. “I'll do better,” she said. She knew she needed to do better. One of her closest friends, a woman who meant more to her than she could bring herself to say, had apparently been going gray from the stress of supporting her and she'd failed to notice. Ariadne could've kicked herself. “Let's get to work on implementing some of those ideas now, and then I really think we could use a drink later tonight.”

“I'll start spreading the word! Already got some ideas for shows to put on.” Alicia laughed and headed for the door, satisfied with this answer.

“Are we… good?” Ariadne asked, suddenly incredibly anxious, “like, are we okay now?”

“We were always okay,” Alicia said, pulling her coat on and hesitantly returning to her seat at the table, “part of the reason you keep me around is because I know when you need a reality check. I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't give you a fight every now and then.”

“Alicia? The way you feel about how I'm like a… well…” Ariadne caught the words in her mouth. “I love you too, and I… would be a lot less fucked up if I was your… I mean, you know what you mean to me, right? Even if I'm too… me… to say it?”

“I'd be proud if you were,” Alicia said, “but I'm even more proud I get to call you a friend again. Just promise you'll get some rest.”

“I'll do my best,” Ariadne promised.

“And, little word of advice?”

“Yeah?”

“You and me don't need to have this talk. We're both adults and we know what we are to one another.” Alicia looked her directly in the eyes. “But you have this talk with her before you both drive yourselves crazy thinking about it.”

Alicia pulled her coat tighter and went out the door. Ariadne felt that windless chill drift into her home and gave a slight shudder.

She actually found herself wishing Alicia hadn't held her tongue to spare her the discomfort of hearing “you're like a daughter to me.” She wished she'd been able to say the words back to her. She cursed Rosario's name for leaving her unable to tell her real family what they meant to her.

Her head was still aching from the shot Sasha had given her, a preventative booster apparently to ward off any traces of the virus that had killed off the original population of Xiagu.

She started to think about the fact that she couldn't remember very much about the morning before she'd received the shot, but as her mind came close to that subject, she suddenly remembered that Pilar was waiting for her, and went up to join what was left of her nap.

It was fine, she thought, probably nothing important had happened that morning anyway.

Women’s History Month Round-Up, 11 March 2024

Opening door for women

In the modern America’s Cup, the American sailor Dawn Riley has arguably done more for gender equality than any other. In 1992, she sailed aboard Bill Koch’s America 3 program in the Defender Series and by 1995 was team captain leading the defeated ‘Mighty Mary’ IACC campaign, again backed by Koch, in what was a ground-breaking moment for female athletes in the America’s Cup.

Leslie Egnot, the Olympic silver medalist was appointed as helm with Annie Nelson doing tactics and the ‘Might Mary’ syndicate went deep into the competition taking multiple race wins in the defender selection series.

Throughout the boat, Riley had appointed athletes of the highest caliber bring in Olympic rowers like Amy Baltzell, Marci Porter and Stephanie Maxwell-Pierson, world renowned weight-lifters such as Stephanie Armitage-Johnson and body builders like Shelley Beattie. JJ Fetter, two-time Olympic medalist, came in alongside veterans of Riley’s round the world campaign in 1993-94 such as Merritt Carey.

This was a blueprint being set that proved beyond any doubt that women could compete against the best in the world – and remember these were the days of coffee-grinders and simply enormous rope loads.

The female athletes took it all on, won races and smashed the glass ceiling of the America’s Cup with sponsors ‘proud to be a part of the changing face of sailing’ – one even using that exact phrase in their advertising.

Steps toward Olympic gender parity

The commitment by the International Olympic Committee to gender equality has led to a steady increase in the number of female athletes at the Olympic Games year on year. Starting with just 2.2% in Paris 1900, where women competed at the Olympic Games for the first time, it has risen steadily to reach 48% in Tokyo 2020.

Sailing has been riding that wave, and while gender participation was equal in Tokyo, the medal opportunities still favored men who had five events, the women had four events, and there was one mixed event. For Paris 2024, there will be both equal participation and medal opportunities for men and women.

Overall, the sports program for Paris has 28 out of 32 sports achieving full gender parity, while the distribution of medals has 152 women’s events, 157 men’s events, and 20 mixed-gender events.

Considering the future for Cole Brauer

Success in offshore solo sailing, at the pro elite level, requires a variety of skills combined and I strongly believe Cole ticks all the boxes to allow her to take the giant leap from a Global Solo Challenge to a Vendée Globe.

However, the scale of a Vendée Globe campaign compared to a Global Solo Challenge stands at the very least at a ratio of 10 to 1 in terms of complexity, financial commitment, skill level of the pro elite sailors and competence of the shore team that accompany the skipper during a campaign.

During the Global Solo Challenge 2023, Cole Brauer Ocean Racing was undoubtedly the best prepared and funded project of all the entries in the event. Unlike other participants, she was the only one to have a full shore team, not just a few friends and helpers.

Hi, I don't know if this is the right place to ask this but I've seen a lot of very contradictory meanings for the word 'skinhead', is it pro or anti fascism/racism/bigotry/etc?

Oh, you have definitely come to the right place!  Have a seat, grab a drink, and get ready for some news you probably had no idea about. 

(above: skinheads in the UK, circa 1969) Skinhead comes from the merger of two youth subcultures - the mods and the rude boys.  This happened when young Jamaican immigrants to the UK in the 1960s began hanging around with working-class English kids.  Back in the day, no one would blink an eye at a black skinhead This began to change in the 1970s, when racist extremists in the UK began to recruit disaffected working-class youth as cannon fodder for their campaigns.  Noting that skinheads had reputations as street fighters, they began to distort & corrupt the subculture, helped along by a hysterical mass media. By the time the skinhead subculture took root in the U.S., it was unclear which version of skinhead - the original multiracial version or the nazi imposters - would hold sway.  But sensationalist media coverage, stuffy academics, and of course the police made sure that the public equated “skinhead” with “racists,” unwittingly helping U.S. racist groups with their recruitment by handing the subculture over to them on a silver fucking platter.

2. When you were creating this character, what was their original draft? Are they the same character you intended to make?

hir original draft was a bard (most likely college of whispers) who was involved in a crime syndicate because it gave hir the easiest access to bodies, and ze wanted to learn medicine but didn't have the time for an actual degree, so ze just wanted to learn and study from cadavers.

saint is now an enchantment wizard (4)/bard (1) multiclass who is involved in the crime syndicate because of a backstory i figured out earlier this week after almost 6 months of playing this campaign (because i didn't want to pour my heart and soul into a backstory for a dmpc who may not have been sticking around the whole time) and who is soft hearted but silver tongued and stands up for those ze loves. the healing is a necessary part of what ze can do but i still didn't want to go full cleric and have to rp with myself all the interactions with a divine being, but we still needed healing bc the other two party members are a rogue and a fighter

so wizard it was? this is certainly a questionable choice lmao i'd love to hear other people's thoughts on it 💕

actually to celebrate 6 months of the campaign we will be doing a one-shot (most likely two-shot) of a modern retelling of one of the candlekeep mysteries - its set in like....late 80s/early 90s waterdeep, so people have cars and desktop computers but cell phones aren't really a thing and google hasn't been invented yet. i'm very excited for this ghost story to lead us on quite the little adventure, so i think that's the next au for everyone?

but other than that there aren't really a ton of aus, though sunny and i do have pirate and mafia verses which are just fun to talk about 💕

Villain!Hanta Sero Headcanons

Hanta is definitely not someone you want on your bad side. The young man seems to be all goofy smiles and lackadaisy, but beneath it all, there’s a fierce, roaring tenacity oh-so-carefully subdued... So what were to happen if this unbridled pride and ferociousness were to be focused on nefarious means?

First, we have to address what could steer Hanta to villainy. Honestly? I can think of one thing and one thing only: Denki dying right in front of him. 

Hear me out here; it’s clear that these two are best buds, peas in a pod, close as brothers. Hanta would become unhinged if his best friend were to tragically lose his life, especially as a result of the great war waging between heroes and villains right now. Hanta wouldn’t be able to cope with the idea that heroes are just expendables mean to an end, tools for the governing body to impose their senses of justice on the masses. 

Hanta’s mind would literally shatter and he’d spiral into an uncontrollable bloody rage. When he'd wake up, he’d be far away, soaked in blood- no idea who’s. There were a lot of things he wouldn’t know at the moment, aside from two things: he couldn’t go back now, and he didn’t want to. 

Hanta would stay underground for a while. His friends would come looking for him, of course, trying to talk reason and drag him back while he still had the chance for redemption, but he’d avoid them. They were his friends once, after all, and he doesn’t want to fight them. Eventually, he’d half-heartedly spar with them, trying to convince them of his way of thinking. When it’s clear to him that he can’t change their minds, Hanta decides that they’re too far gone, and he has to save them from this life of corruption. If they die in his efforts, well... Sacrifices have to be made for the greater good, right?

Mina takes it the hardest. She makes it her personal mission to seek him out and either reform him or destroy him. It’d get to the point of self-destructive because she’d come at Hanta staggering on her feet only barely conscious, dripping blood all over the melted pavement. Always, Eijirou and Katsuki would swoop in for the rescue, and it always makes Hanta think that maybe if he’d just gotten to Denki a little bit faster, things wouldn’t have turned out this way. But they did, and Hanta had to live with that. 

 His new ideology, the painful weight of his own failure, and the burden of “saving” his friends slowly would drive Hanta insane. He’d grow bolder, actively seeking out small-time heroes and trainees for unprovoked fights, and critically injuring many. He wouldn’t kill them if he can help it; that’s not the point. He wants them to live, to see how they’re just thrown to the side as broken tools by an uncaring state. He wants them to feel how he felt when he was told to abandon Denki’s lifeless body and keep fighting... Like his best friend was just trash in the way. 

Hanta’s always been a personable, charismatic guy, so attracting a group of like-minded fellows is honestly a cakewalk. Once the news gets clips of him spouting his revolutionary drivel on the air, they come flocking out of the shadows. Hanta would interview them to ensure that their ideologies aligned; he couldn’t have blood-thirsty maniacs tarnishing the name of his political crusade, now. If they fall short of his expectations, he'll them on the spot. Just because he wants the downfall of the current hero society didn’t mean he wants the more radical, chaotic villains to run amok. 

Campaigning a political upheaval requires a lot of funds. Hanta finds his niche in smuggling contraband, specifically hard drugs like cocaine and heroin. The secondary violence surrounding such an enterprise is unfortunate, but he abhorrs the idea of smuggling weapons or engaging in human trafficking because he still has some shred of regard for human life. At least, that’s what he tells himself when he looks in the mirror, finding that the grinning, light-hearted boy Denki respected so much has morphed into the hard, unforgiving grimace of a criminal. 

Hanta’s business enterprise evolves into a massive syndicate. He becomes one of the world’s most wanted, having to constantly dodge Interpol, pro heroes, and the Japanese military and police. Within a decade of watching his friend die in his arms and being cast aside like his sacrifice meant nothing, Hanta eventually is good and ready to take on the world as they know it with nothing but a charming grin, a silver tongue, and an army to back him. That means taking on the cohort of top pro heroes that he’d once called comrades, but hey, it’s just all in how the cookie crumbles, now isn’t it? 

The world let his best friend die, and Hanta just isn’t going to stop until he saw it burn to ashes, or he dies trying.

On The Undead

Because hey, worldbuilding continues to be fun 

When we speak of the undead, there are certain similarities of type that hold constant-they are a mortal soul (not a god) untethered to the natural rhythms of life, divorced from vital flesh or novel thought. But that tells us nothing of interest for any but the most arcane of theologians.

More helpfully, then, the undead come in four varieties, and nigh-on endless races and clans within each. They are the Righteous, the Penitent, the Ravaged and the Damned. We shall now discuss each, in turn.

The Righteous Dead are formed from the body of men who, having sworn some great and sacred oath, were struck down before they could see it to completion. Rather than letting them be damned as forsworn, the Gods in their mercy granted their soul strength to match its will, time and power enough to see to their duties so they might pass on as honoured heroes. Having Higher Purpose, it would in nearly all cases be blasphemous to bind such souls to secular aims (and difficult, besides) and so we have not given them much study. As a rule they are puissant and singular, incapable of  reproducing themselves, are only occasionally bound by barriers of sunlight, salt or running water, and are greatly weakened or destroyed should they ever set aside their Purpose.

The most storied and famous race of these is the Revanent-those who, their hearth and kin left as ashes and tears on bloody ground by the treachery of those who should have stood with them, swear righteous vengeance upon those who ruined them but are struck down before they can make good upon it. Though they still wear their mortal frame, it is very clearly but a puppet for the soul, death wounds left unhealed, moving with inhuman strength regardless of what their muscles should allow. Their hunt is ceaseless until they have visited bloody vengeance upon all those they swore doom upon, and should they be moved be appeals to mercy or prudence the next sunset will send them to their appointed hell.

The Penitent Dead are of a similar kind to their Righteous kin, and a subject I can hold forth on at length. In the Crown Lands of Belthaya it is the sacred right of the condemned and indebted to assume all responsibility for their sins and mistakes themselves, and so spare their kith and kin any punishment they might be do. After their execution, the souls of these wretches are bound into their boiled skeletons and entombed with arms and armor, to be called upon in times of war, or else bound to some useful fetish or token so they might provide useful service to their victims or creditors. While a few truly grand heretics are said to have been condemned by Heaven, when created by mortal hands these bindings are inevitably temporary (a matter of decades passed or of commands given or campaigns fought) and replete with necessary bans and banes incorporated to the rituals-pure salt, running water and sunlight are as ever the most reliable.

Beyond the Legions, the most famous, or infamous, more properly, example of the Penitent in modern times are assuredly those fools who fall into debt with the Society of Echoes, the salacious examples of which far outnumber what I have the ink to describe. Suffice to say that the necromantic syndicate collects secrets and treasures like a counterfeit dragon, and are only to happy to take advantage when those they loan out to default, binding their souls into jewelry or weapons or useful tools until they have been expended or worked off their debt.

The most pathetic and pitiable race of the dead are, without question, the Ravaged. In some ways seemingly indistinguishable to the Penitent, the crucial distinction is rather than condemned and bound by right, their souls have been wounded and warped by the assault of some alien force. Despite what their appearance might lead one to believe, corpses used as hosts by demons almost never qualify, as Incarnation invariably destroys the soul of the unfortunate victim beyond hope of recovery. Instead, these are nearly without exception the victims of the Damned who we will discuss momentarily, or of particularly debased and decadent renegade sorcerors or terrestrial gods. Bleeding spiritual wounds filled with shock or suffering, they only show intellect or consciousness when directed by their creator or something like him, and are easily warded off or destroyed by the standard elements and symbols of purity and life (the vast majority being entirely powerless through the day, for example).

The two most famous examples of the Ravaged are surely the ghost, killed in some particularly foul and wounding way, their soul forced to relive and suffer from that wound until laid to rest, and the husk, the all-to-common final fate of those preyed upon by the Damned, a rotting and half-eaten corpse sustained only to fetch their replacements as their master’s meal of choice.

But of course, when we whisper of ‘the undead’ around camfires and tavern tables, it is very nearly always the Damned to which we refer. The terrible lords and ladies of the grave, the mad heretics and proud blasphemers so terrified of their final judgment the sacrifice all admirable and lasting legacy on the altar of their own existence. They invariably seem more complete and closer to human than any other race of the dead (it would be a poor trade indeed, else), but they are by nature parasitic. The Lich’s wit and intellect will never dull, but those in their thrall will grow dimmer and duller until they are naught but a soul in a corpse without thought to guide them. The Vampyre will remain forever in the splendour of their youth, with attributes far beyond any base mortal, but those they feast upon will in the long run become nothing but a spectral choir chained to their glory, all vitality bled from their flesh. The Wraith bears a passing similarity to a god, all will and power unchained to mortal form, but he must devour his sacrifices completely, lest the souless husks become easy prey for demons grander than he. And so it goes, for every novel hubris and innovation the most subtle apostates can devise. The soul itself cannot sustain life outside its allotted span, and its parody lasts only through predation.

Those Damned that are taken as facsimile of children or companions by some elder progenitor very often carry the usual weaknesses, inherited from their ‘father’ or ‘mother’, but it is foolish in the extreme to assume this of the self-made damned. Some flaw in their ritual is inevitable, but most clever apostates make certain to protect themselves against anything so common as oceans or cold silver.

Game Idea: Spider-Man_Goblin Empire

Introduction

Spider-Man’s the best. He has the most fully realized character and franchise of any superhero in terms of supporting cast (civilian and heroes), villains, and recurring themes that still manage to feel relevant. As a result of the work put into his franchise, Spider-Man has developed a number of heroes who have not seen enough of the spotlight, despite being awesome enough to first appear in his book. I was thinking about the sheer scope of all of the heroes and villains within the Spider-Man franchise, and it occurred to me that there is a game that should be made that could show off the sheer size of it all and be fun as hell. Basically, a squad-based 3rd person combat game; or shorthand- Overwatch with Spider-Man but more story-driven. I call it- Spider-Man: Goblin Empire.

Story and Gameplay

Taking a cue from Dan Slott and Insomniac Games, the story sees a veteran Spider-Man, four or five years into his superhero career, having to organize and lead the heroes of NYC to help the police fight the Goblin Empire and their allies, the Sinister Six. In a swift and impressive display of power and organization, The Goblin King Norman Osborn has managed to block off and gain control of NYC in a single night. He has ambassadors, industry leaders, and celebrities as hostages to leverage against the world as they grapple whether to recognize the hostile takeover of NYC and the sovereignty of his newly proclaimed empire. His Goblin Commanders are going to precincts to ensure that the instill martial law until the Goblin King lays out all of the new laws; many are complying operating under the assumption that compliance is less risky and thus harmful to the citizens than resistance to this overwhelming new power. But others are not, and the resistance is led by Deputy Chief Yuri Watanbe with the support of Spider-Man and the heroes gathered with him. Spider-Man and allies must work to secure the future of NYC from Osborn and Octavius as well as keeping citizens safe from other threats within the city such as the combined forces of Kingpin and Hammerhead, Mister Negative and his Inner Demons, and the ‘neutral’ but greedy Alchemax.

The game will have a more cartoonish over realist visuals and would have single player, co-op, and multiplayer campaign modes as well as different PvP style matches. Players in campaign mode would play through different missions that would move the story forward, but against an internal clock. In single player campaign, you can build a team of up to 3 support NPCs for missions. The goal is to complete certain missions by a certain times within the game or the Goblin Nation becomes official, which represents ultimate failure. There is no particular order in which the missions must be completed, but the series of missions completed will affect the ‘Hope meter’ or measurement of confidence in the rebel forces by the world community as the delay or accept the power of the Goblin Nation. Certain series of missions will create greater hope than others, so the goal is to try to keep the ‘Hope meter’ up as much as possible in order to gain enough time to defeat Osborn.

In the comics or a show, this story might play out with the Goblin Nation being recognized to drive up tension, but within the game this will mean a hard reset of progress. Why? One, because of the challenge of figuring out what order of missions will keep Norman from being recognized as a legit King and the urgency it creates. And two, because Norman wouldn’t negotiate a deal that doesn’t grant him help against ‘rebels’ from other nations, ie America and Canada. ‘Help’ being code for later Avengers and Alpha Flight updates/expansions.

The campaign would not be all that there is to the game. Players could have team deathmatches, king of the hill, escort missions, capture the flag, or control style matches. The maps would be based on the five boroughs of this fictional NYC with each borough having 5-7 maps of varying sizes for different size of teams. All characters, no matter their faction, would be available for play in non-campaign mode. And obviously upgradeable gear and appearances will be available.

Villains would only be playable after the completion of regular campaign, and a new campaign would be available where you play as the villains to defeat the rebels. In the villain campaign, instead of a ‘Hope meter’ there would be a ‘Support Meter’ that measures how many citizens accept Osborn, Octavius, Kingpin, or Mister Negative as their new leader depending on which villain faction you choose to play the campaign as. It would still be the same basic game, but seen from the other side and with a new set of characters with new combat abilities to play with.

With the goal of showing off how big and awesome the Spider-Man franchise really is beyond the main man, I decided the golden rule for who gets to be a playable character is that they must have first appeared in a Spider-Man title. This being the first game, I decided that I wanted to go big, but there are some exceptions. That all being said, here are the following playable factions.

Goblin foot soldiers are known as Greys, because of the tint of their skin with the modified formula they have. The Greys are not as strong or well equipped as the Commanders, but they are formidable and can easily toss over a police precinct if left unchecked.

Neutral-ish: Alchemax and Alistaire Smythe

They are supported by Alchemax security and Spider-Slayer drones. They may or may not assist the player depending upon what missions have been completed and where the ‘Hope Meter’ is at.

Assorted Notes:

I think Agent Venom needs a new look. I’m not sure what direction to go necessarily, but a new look would be good. I’m also thinking not strictly military; could be a SWAT dude beforehand. I will give further consideration to this development.

Flashback narrative sequences would be achievable after related missions to help flesh out backstory. Basically, these would be 1-4 minute stories, and hypothetically, I’d like one for each character. That would clearly take some time to work out; possibly released as updates depending upon development.

I think it would be fun to have a single player fighting game style mode as well, but I’m uncertain if that would be with launch or a new expansion.

I think a larger Symbiote and/or Clone expansion is definitely in the future. Those could be tied together narratively, or more likely, done as two different expansions. The Clone expansion could even be tied into a Spider-Island style narrative, but that’s just speculative for the moment. I’ll need to think of something more for those expansion ideas.

I do think the larger Marvel Universe exists, but I wouldn’t even mention them within the first game or within the first couple of expansions to keep with showing off the Spider-Man breadth and depth.

I’ve avoided different universe/timeline versions of characters for now, but that could be a whole sequel.
