WIP: Caldera

Matt liked going on hikes. He had driven west for this one, a ways out of Denver and up highway 285, along the front range. The dirt road first, and the trail itself, had curled around the sides of mountains, steadily leading him upwards through towers of orange rock and scraggly desert trees. By the time he reached the top of the hill, Matt was puffing, already wanting for oxygen, and he paused to catch his breath. 

It was so beautiful up here surrounded by nothing but thin air. He could see the highway below him, winding, serpentine, to where it would end at the border with New Mexico. A bird of prey floated on nothing above him, searching for its next meal. It was quiet but for his heavy breathing. 

And then, first to his left ear, then his right, it was not quiet at all. Something deafening and intangible passed through him from the west. 

In the distance, a siren. 

Matt became aware of something not quite human all about him, and shivered, and turned around, but no one was standing behind him. Hadn’t it been late July desert-hot not a second ago? He was momentarily sure that the sun had vanished, but when he turned skyward again, it glared blazingly into his eyes. 

Matt turned around on the trail and headed back to the car with the vague sense that something large and frightening had happened to him on that hike, but when he would return home, he wouldn’t be able to quite explain what had been so off. 

Later that evening, the federal government began evacuating Colorado citizens from the state.

Introducing the hearts casino!

Name: The Aortorium

Location: A large chateau settled in the caldera of a dormant volcano, the floor is warmed by the magma churning beneath the black-rock surface. Hot springs outside provide beautiful and natural hot tubs to relax... as long as you don't think too hard about when the heart of the mountain might reawaken.

Vibes: The Aortorium is where the people go when they want their blood to pump faster. It’s filled with hundreds of high-stakes rooms draped in rich fabrics that scream money, sometimes more literally than others. The maze-like interior is easy to get lost in for days especially when the music and lights also pump to the beat of the hearts of the patrons.
