Plant of the Day
Sunday 28 January 2024
In the warmth of this tropical glasshouse the tuberous perennial Caladium 'Candidum' (angel wings, elephant ears) was producing this dramatic foliage. The leaves are the major feature of this tender houseplant which needs a position in partial or full shade with humus rich, moist, well-drained growing media.

Someones been working on their ornamental garden! Can you help fill in the signs?
Take your guess in 3… 2…
1. The first one has colorful, heart-shaped leaves. Common varieties include pink and white. Its a tropical plant native to Brazil.
Here’s my guess, courtesy of
El libro de las HOJAS DISTINGUIDAS | The Book of Distinguished Leaves
2. The second one is more of a challenge. It has toothed, pointed leaves, and grows as a bush.
Lets get a better look at those leaves. Is she irregularly shaped, with asymmetrical lobes? Or is she just rendered that way?
Theres some dappling of lighter colored marks on the leaves as well.
My best guess is a hybrid of another Brazilian plant. The leaf shape is spot on, and the dappled lighter color is a nice signature.
I’m no expert though, leave your guess in the comments!

Caladium rose buds, I got them earlier in the summer. I’m really happy with these plants, they are incredibly colorful and lively. I have more that are a larger variety, I did not anticipate how large of pots these guys would need. By next year, I'll probably have alot more bulbs. I have so many different ones... kind of worried I've made a terrible mistake... haha.
