The retreat that pushed me forward
The retreat that pushed me forward
Attending my first in-person writing retreat after the pandemic was like a dream. The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators had been forced to hold virtual events for the past two years. This year we were back. A few weeks ago, twenty-five writers, editors, and agents met in the San Jacinto Mountains face to face. We slept in tiny cabins at Tahquitz Pines Conference Center in…

Another year, another @phandomholidaytruce ✨
Merry crisler @datawyrms ! Hope you like it!! It's also on AO3 with an extra chapter
Something's Wrong with Danny Fenton
The realization that something was seriously wrong was like falling asleep; slowly, and then all at once.
There had been no catalyst, no trigger to speak of.
Miss Jones had been sick and, this late into the school year, they hadn't bothered to provide a replacement. Most of the class hadn't even bothered showing up anyway; with finals so close, they were either asleep of studying.
Cal would have done the same, was it not for the absolute chaos at home. The twins were off school for the summer already, and they made sure to make their presence known to every single resident of the house. Usually starting at 6am. Cal didn't feel like he got to choose whether to stay home or not.
This is how he found himself here, sitting in a mostly empty classroom, gaze unfocused as he soaked in the rare moments of quiet. In front of him lay an opened biology book, as he lied to himself that he was going to use this time to revise ahead of exams. Instead, the sketch of a duck wearing sunglasses was guiltily staring at him from the page margins.
His gaze had wandered to the window, towards the school-yard of Casper High. Today was a rather rare sunny day; it was early summer, but even during the heart of the hottest season there was a never-ending, persistent chill that seemed to choke the entirety of Amity Park.
Cal, of course, knew exactly where it was coming from.
It was a little bit difficult to live around here and not know about the ghosts.
He pushed his glasses up his nose nervously. He didn't have any particular strong feelings about ghosts, really. He had gotten used to them, in a way. But, truth be told, he was not a fan of the spine-chilling coldness that seeped through everything in their presence and lingered after they were gone. The way the town seemed never to be able to escape this coldness anymore bothered him, but there was not much to do other than suck it up.
Which was why rare days like today were a pleasant, welcome surprise to the locals. He could see his classmates lounging around in the grass outside, soaking up the sunlight like starving sunflowers, and it brought a warm feeling in his chest. Cal was always more of a people watcher, standing in the side and absorbing situations rather than getting involved.
He tried to ignore the tense feeling in his spine that made the hair at the back of his neck stand.
Also, he was studying. He looked down at his book and a second duck that had joined the first and was silently judging him, this time wearing a dapper top hat and a little bow-tie.
There was no haunting chill in this classroom. Right. He didn't want to go out and miss the time to relax.
His let his gaze passively wander around the room. There were only four others in there with him, all in different states of mental non-existence. Eleanor and Sally-Anne were sat opposite each other, heads close over the desk as they gossiped, their whispers providing a subtle background noise through the quiet room. Jonathan (the one with the glasses, not the one in the football team) was focused on the book in front of him and Danny, at the back of the class, looked to have fully dissociated, eyes glazed over. Now wasn't that relatable.
Cal sighed. Suddenly the chair felt a bit stiff, his shoulders a bit tense, so he pulled his arms behind his back in a big stretch. He couldn't help the groan that left his lips as he felt his joints pop. Grabbing the back of his chair, he twisted around -first the right side, then the left- to relieve the tension.
The tension, as if to spite him, stayed.
He got up, cringing at the scraping sound his chair made as it slid back, and he could see on the edge of his vision that his movement had caught the attention of the two girls. When he didn't say anything, they returned to their conversation.
Cal went around his desk towards the window and looked outside, once again marveling at the sunshine and trying to ignore the goosebumps travelling down his arms. He did briefly debate the merits of joining the rest of the glass out in the grass once more, but the peace of the quiet classroom was too tempting for his foggy brain. Still, he didn't feel like sitting in a chair for the next forty minutes. Looking around, he spotted a few unattended markers on the teacher's desk, and paused, a thought forming in his mind.
His fingers were itching with misplaced adrenaline, and he figured what the hell.
Pointedly not allowing any awkward embarrassment to brew, he approached the desk, grabbed the black and green markers and approached the blank class whiteboard.
Cal had always liked to draw. His mom said it's because his hands can't sit still (but she liked it, really, especially when he made her custom-made mother's day cards every year). The twins had no opinion about it, until his sister got her first celebrity crush and begged him to draw the poor guy with cat ears.
No ducks with accessories this time.
She later posted it online with a humble brag about how she had 'finished it really quickly, what do you guys think' but, considering she had barely hit double digits in age, Cal had let it pass.
The validation of elementary kids was not in his radar, exactly.
He never followed any particular theme -his illustrations were usually random, without much thought. He liked letting his mind and hand take him wherever, and that often led to either randomness or, as was often the case for his bigger, more planned illustrations, a lot of inspiration from his environment.
Was it a surprise that he had produced so many drawings of ghosts?
As Cal was suddenly, once again, very aware of the subtle chill (not quite a presence, but it existed and it came from somewhere), he figured that one more addition to his ghost collection wouldn't make any difference.
Even if he wasn't used to drawing on a whiteboard, he still felt the long, controlled strokes of the marker come naturally. His preferred style was either completely colorless (which had absolutely nothing to do with his tendency to draw during class, thank you very much) or with minimal color; he knew how to manage negative space to his liking.
He had to admit, the subject he had chosen was pretty perfect for the whiteboard; all high contrast black and whites.
Getting lost in the process was easy for Cal; applying long strokes across the board and thick filling to the black outfit allowed time and tension to pass him by, almost. The hair would be tricky; making sure the black marker was used faintly enough to translate the light, luminous color was a mission, and Cal was nothing if not a perfectionist when it came to his work. All aspects to a drawing needed to come together for a good result, after all.
But for this, the most important part was the eyes.
Cal tightened his grip around the green marker. There could be only one color on this drawing, and it had to be the eyes. Sadly, a green whiteboard marker would never be quite the toxic green that he would have liked, but it was the principle that counted.
As he placed the last detail on the hair, fade enough to be as close to the bright white of the real thing, he uncapped the green marker. There was a sense of gravitas in the movement, the start of the final step to this work.
Or maybe Cal was just pretentious about it, who's to say.
"Wow, Cal, you're so good!"
The sudden voice made Cal jump and, even worse, almost draw a green line straight through the board and the almost finished drawing. He turned around to realize that everyone in the room was staring at him.
Maybe he should've thought this would happen, but he felt the heat on his cheeks rise nonetheless.
It was Sally-Anne who had spoken, turned around on her seat where she was facing Eleanor. Both were smiling. A few desks ahead, Jonathan had abandoned his reading and instead was looking at Cal with interest, head resting on his hand.
Cal avoided all their eyes, fidgeting with the green marker instead "Um, thanks. Just a hobby, no big deal."
Sally-Anne raised her eyebrows. "Are you joking? This is amazing! It's like, the best Phantom art I've ever seen!"
Cal blushed even harder. "You're exaggerating, but thanks."
Eleanor gasped "Oh my God, no one better erase this! Quick, I need a picture!" she swiftly pulled out her phone and paused. "Hey Cal, can you like, put a signature somewhere on that? I need to take a pic."
Cal breathed out, muttering 'no problem' and obliged.
A stutter sound came from Eleanor's phone "Awesome! I'll send it to you if you want!"
Cal refused and Eleanor shrugged, sending it to Sally-Anne instead.
Soon everyone went back to what they were previously doing and Cal was happy to be ignored. Walking over to the teacher's desk to put the markers back (and maybe look for an eraser, if Eleanor and Sally-Anne didn't kill him first), he was suddenly aware of that ever-present yet so distant chill and his head snapped up towards the room.
At that moment, he locked eyes with Danny Fenton, and Cal froze.
It was impossible to pinpoint what was wrong exactly, which made things worse. Danny Fenton looked as he usually did; tired, bruised, head resting against his hand and unruly hair falling in his face. Yet there was something just wrong. His pallor was pale, unnervingly so, the bluing bruise against his cheek and graze on his lip contrasting dramatically against his skin. But his gaze was so sharp that Cal was sure that Danny could see right though his skin and into his brain.
It happened slowly, and then all at once.
Worst of all, Cal now knew where that ever so familiar chill came from, and he was almost shocked he didn't recognize it before. The aura of the dead was practically oozing off Danny Fenton.
Time felt like it was slowing down as Cal was locked in by those eyes, a shade of blue so cold it was painful and, for the first time, Cal realized that he was seeing Danny Fenton.
Cal wasn't sure how long he was trapped under that gaze. It felt like eons, but it couldn't have been more than seconds. As he felt his brain melt under the realization that something was frighteningly wrong with one of the people he knew, something happened that shocked him out of his spiraling.
Danny smiled. The faintest, most tired lift of lips, yet it was enough to transform the aura of wrong and that trapping stare, like deciding to let free an animal that was going to become dinner.
Just like that, with a movement so simple, the chill was passive again. Cal smiled back.
Feeling like he was floating, Cal went back to his desk. He took a seat as the bell rang and his classmates soon started filtering in, all of them taking a moment to show various levels of awe towards his drawing.
Throughout it all, Cal kept his head tilted and one eye, watching Danny's reaction. To anyone else, he looked like he had just woken up from a nap, groggy and unfocused. But Cal now knew better. He had realized the wrongness, and knew there was more hidden behind these icy eyes.
He didn't know what, he didn't know how. He didn't know when it had started, or why, but there was one thing Cal was sure of.
There was something very wrong with Danny Fenton.

The wording of this anti racial-profiling law (Cal. Penal Code section 13519.4) blatantly exposes the chauvinism required in order to justify organized violent law enforcement. "Alienation" does not impede the public's relationship with law enforcement. For white people, alienation from people of color is the basis of their loyalty to law enforcement. For people of color, enduring police brutality does not "alienate" them from the police. Unlike whites (who are treated as the default in American legislation), people of color have a distinctly defined relationship with the law.
WHITES can be alienated from the police, who are designed to serve as their mirror-sentinels against slave revolt, but PEOPLE OF COLOR cannot be alienated from the police any more than water can be alienated from fire. They are corresponding parts to a system of oppression. The first instance of law enforcement in this country were slave patrols. Civil rights legislation exists for people of color, yet there are no laws that defend any WHITE person from discrimination- there's no need, since the rights of white people are outlined in the Constitution. Clearly, for people of color, civil rights legislation does NOT supplement their rights as Americans, but revises the parameters for violence that law enforcement is allowed to inflict against them. American law enforcement would not even resemble its current condition if not for the presence of an enslaved class when this country was founded. The police exist to uphold white supremacy. The implication that racial profiling "alienates" its victims from the police is characteristically liberal.

The Dueling Soul Loopers
I’ve been plotting and thinking and I’ve made random little bursts of posts, buuut I’m going to talk about my iwatex au.
So basically one of the iwatex kids gets caught up in the wormhole, but they’re not previously sensitive to it like Sol is. Some...unique circumstances bring them to the wormhole, and they go through their loops with more memories intact.
It does not go well, and leads to a cascade of Bad Times and a weakening wormhole until eventually, we get the au’s iteration of Sol. Sol is starting to...get tired and remember and understand more of what’s going on with the wormhole, even from a young age.
But then everything changes, and they’re left standing on the ashes of the colony and planet before being brought back to the Stratos in space and being a kid again. Sol’s kind of very fucked up about it.
Cue the other kids starting to piece together that they’re from different Bad Times timelines, that Sol is emotionally Very Not Okay and frankly they aren’t either (especially the ones with stronger memories of their timelines and their violent deaths...). Marz and Nem have a shakier memory - Marz remembers pieces while Nem’s memory cuts off at a certain point.
But everyone wants to do right by each other, the colony, and the approaching Helios (well...the redeemable bits of Helios, most of them are Very On Edge about police fascists approaching because of their timelines). Though some are more forthcoming about what happened in their timelines than others - like Tang very much Does Not want to discuss what happened, Marz admits her memory is *fuzzy* and Cal is open about it, at least with some people anyway. Cal is mostly open because he needs to reassure himself certain people are okay, because again, they all died rather traumatically and they’re carrying that with them in the present timeline.
I’m not sure when they would piece it together (though Sol knows) who the other kid is that’s been through several loops, but they would eventually piece that together and start trying to figure out the wormhole, especially since it’s uh, not a healthy wormhole anymore. Which is worrying the Gardeners a bit more than the human colony.
I might talk more about some of the characters’ specific timelines later - I need to keep a few secret so I don’t have to reveal who is Sol’s companion in being attached to the wormhole.
I’m also wondering if their original selves, the original kids unaware of the wormhole, remain in their minds or not. It could bring interesting internal conflicts if I have them be a bit muddled up as “past” and “dark future” versions of themselves.
I need to work and finish a fic I’ve been working on and tried to finish in a previous draft but I’m doing big revisions again but hopefully this will be the last and then I can shove the wips into a corner to focus on iwatex hhahaha

I'm going yo fail my exams and I single handedly blame food. September, I was once every three days, max 900 cals and bmi 16.5, still rapidly losing. My homework was done well and on time, I was revising for hours a day and almost always top of my class. Now I can't fucking stop binging, bmi 18.6 (?) can't do a successful fast over 24 hours to save my life and struggle to stay under 1000cals. I'm unorganised af, haven't done homework on time in weeks, havent revised, am failing my exams and I'm that person people say had "so much potential"
I did qhat they wanted, I ate, now they're happy and I'm not. I'm getting back to where I was before and worse and I don't care about the consequences anymore. Id rather have a tube than this bullshit.

D&D Homebrew Race time!!!
This one’s been sitting in my notes app for ages and i finally got around to revising it a bit. Parts of this statblock will say “you or your” and others will just say “the breadfolk”. Same thing it’s just that I mostly wrote these for my players who need to be concisely told when they need to do things.
Breadfolk
A race of living baked goods. They are created when magic and baking come together, forming a whimsical creature.
The first breadfolk were created by a mischievous fae goddess who decided to mess with a royal baker by animating and granting sentience to every single piece of bread within their store rooms. The result were hundreds of small little people made of bread, all seeking their own place in the world. All of them came with prewritten histories and lives that they swear are real, such as one being a knight of the crumbtable or one being the princess of muffinland. Some traits of a breadfolk are inherited from the original baker, but most are completely arbitrary. Other fae have taken up the habit of creating breadfolk, mostly because they are entertain by the silly little guy nature of breadfolk. Stats and subtypes below
-Type: Construct, but can be affected by abilities that only affect fae/fey.
-Age: The lifespan of breadfolk is about the same of a dwarf, although breadfolk start their lives as fully capable “adults”. Upon death breadfolk go through a process called “molding” where they are covered in mold and begin to break down.
-Size: Small
-Fire vulnerability: When fire damage is rolled against a breadfolk, increase the dice amount by one. (E.X. 3d4 fire damage -> 4d4 fire damage)
-Languages: Common, Sylvan and any 1 standard language of your choice (that choice is usually the language of the bread folks original original baker)
Subtypes
Crusted
Crusted Breadfolk were left out too long before being animated, and thus have a hardened outer crust.
-Stat Changes: +1 Constitution, -2 Strength
-Natural Armor: Crusted Breadfolk gain +1 AC and resistance to non-magical bludgeoning and piercing damage. Taking acid or fire damage will remove this resistance and AC bonus. Completing a long rest will restore the AC bonus and resistance.
-Speed: 20ft
Berried
These Breadfolk have berries baked into them, and are capable of drawing them out to aid them on their travels.
-Stat Changes: -2 Charisma
-Speed: 25ft
-Berry Batch: At the start of each day roll 3d4. Before rolling assign each of them a berry type between Raspberry, Blackberry and Blueberry. The number rolled is the amount of that berry you have access to for that day. Preparing a berry for use is a bonus action, and using a berry is an action. Preparing a berry causes the breadfolk to take 1d2 necrotic damage that cannot be lowered by any means. Below are the different uses of each berry.
Raspberry: The use of a Raspberry acts as a touch-based healing ability. Upon touching a creature while raspberry is prepared, you may use an action to heal that creature for an amount based on your level. Level 1 = 1d4. Level 3 = 2d4, Level 5 = 3d4 etc.
Blackberry: The use of a Blackberry acts as a weapon enchantment ability. Upon touching a piercing or slashing weapon while Blackberry is prepared, you may use an action to coat the weapon in blackberry jam. This adds 1d4 acid damage to an amount of successful attacks based on your level. For every one level you have, the berry buff will last for one more attack before wearing off. Missed attacks do not count against this. Any sort of water coming into contact with the weapon will prematurely end the blackberry buff.
Blueberry: The use of a Blueberry acts as a utility item. When a Blueberry is consumed the creature who consumed the Blueberry gains the effects of a Goodberry. It also gives a temporary 1d2 that can be spent at any point within 1 hour of consumption. This 1d2 is similar to bardic inspiration and can be added to any roll the consumer makes. The use of the Blackberry buff must be called before a roll is made, and cannot be used if a roll has already been made. If multiple Blackberries are consumed then the period where it can be used is extended by 1 hour per extra berry. The 1d2 does not grow larger if multiple berries are consumed. This can be used alongside other inspiration buffs.
Toasted:
These breadfolk were slightly burnt before being animated.
-Stat changes: -2 Constitution.
-Due to being crunchy, they made lots of noise, and have disadvantage on stealth checks.
-Toasted breadfolk do not have the fire vulnerability other breadfolk have.
-Toasted breadfolk are immune to poison damage
-Speed: 30ft

"What home, Greez? There is no home. Home was the order. It was my teacher. It was everyone I lost. What does their sacrifice mean if I go and I just give up and stick my head in the sand?" --Cal Kestis
"Yes. It was my discovery...my home and they just expected me to throw it away! I refused to obey and was betrayed by the one I trusted most!" --Dagan Gera
While it's still fresh in my mind. I'll edit this later with a few thoughts.
Speaking of, I might revise my opinion that Santari wasn't Dagan's master and just colleagues (mentor maybe? That would parallel the relationship Cal and Cere have). My gut instinct still says that he wasn't at any point her padawan but what an interesting thought experiment especially with these quotes side by side.

Word Find Tag game
A little while ago @winterandwords tagged me in the word find tag, you can find their words here. Thank you! I spent several hours today typing in a lot of what I've hand written so far, so now a word search isn't as intimidating.
The words I was given were whisper, talk, shout, and scream.
Whisper:
In a voice that was softer than a whisper he continued, “I can’t tell who’s real.”
Talk: (I use this word way too much)
Mr. Smooth-talker certainly knew exactly what to say to get what he wanted.
Scream (and sort of Shout): (I didn't have a shout and screaming was only in one spot.)
Her burgundy hair was flying behind her. She was screaming directly at the photographer. Her features were distorted with emotion. Cal had a vague sense of recognition.
“Do you have another picture? Where she’s not yelling?”
I'm loosely tagging @tabswrites, @touloserlautrec, @sunset-a-story, and an open tag for anyone else who wants to play. Your words are: pet, blast, secret, and mirror.
(I need to revise a tag list, so if there's anyone who wants to be included in future tags, let me know!)

The Stray Spirit by R.K. Ashwick
A bard and a forest spirit uncover a deadly magical threat…and the key to survival lies within their own forgotten songs.
Struggling bard Emry Karic has only one path home: impress the Auric Guild, join its ranks of elite musicians, and return to his family with his honor in hand.
Difficult to do on a good day. Impossible to do with a possessed lute.
Hours before Emry’s big break, an unnatural earthquake strikes, forcing a forest spirit named Aspen to take refuge in his lute. Aspen is loud, talkative...and not leaving anytime soon.
Panicked, Emry swears the spirit to silence on stage, in exchange for a favor: he will help investigate the mysterious quake that nearly killed them.
But Emry is a bard, not a scholar, and his research leads straight to the person who resents him the most: Cal Breslin, his scholarly ex-girlfriend. Despite their history, Cal can’t pass up the opportunity to study a mythical being, and agrees to join them. Yet as the trio delves into the forgotten folklore of spirits and gods, they uncover a much greater threat looming beneath the surface…
Get the Stray Spirit now on Amazon, B&N, IndieBound, and other stores.

A rough breakdown of the SW playing cards series I’m planning which will DEFINITELY take me years but 100% worth it, to be revised later because organisation is non-existent (I feel like I’ve forgotten people so feel free to suggest):

CLUBS (Empire people, mostly bounty hunter types but with Vader smack bang in the middle because he deserves to be king) Jack: Boba/Jango King: Vader/Anakin Ace: Dooku/Grievous Queen: Ventress/Talzin 2: Cad Bane/Fennec? Idk where else to put her - or I might contrast him with Cobb because angst but he doesn’t really go with the Empire. Oh well I’ll figure it out 3: Hondo/…someone?? No idea who but I want him on there

This will probably just end up being a draft because no one wants to hear me ramble. But tumblr is the only place where I can go full hyperfixation on the SC franchise specifically and I really need to get this crap out of my head because I’m an idiot.
It took me like 90 minutes to get through the first two episodes because I kept pausing to scream at thing. Bless my husband for dealing with me
My first pause/scream happened at the Sara scene because I called it from the trailer which I yelled several times. Also Sara’s deal, relatable.
Actually that’s a lie, I paused after the friggin 20 minute pointless donut scene.
Why when there are flashbacks does the aspect ratio change?
Noel confused me and I don’t get his deal. Idk the try hard thing felt like an even more annoying Curtis to me.
Also, I’m confused on the hierarchy of the Pole now. Like I’m under the assumption Betty is the head elf. But then there’s also that other elf that’s there to greet Scott when he arrives (I think her name is Edie but idk cause we didn’t stay with anyone long enough to understand their roles and names) and idk who she is except another hyper exuberant werido, lol
I like that there is an elf named Crouton. Idk why but I like it
Speaking of Crouton, the scenes in the comm center felt very Prep and Landing to me. Like even down to the revised machines and the way Betty feels like Magee.
The elves danced... there was a cake... that is not every what I pictured the end of the season at the pole like but you do you
All the stuff with Carol not remembering her name really freaked me out. Like, literally between 2 and 3 they said that they weren’t going to make Carol the traditional Mrs Claus because they wanted her to be herself and the old makeup and stuff looked weird.
IDK something about all the elves and the way they portrayed the Claus family really weirded me out. the part where they were all like “MUST MAKE TOYS NOW” felt like a cult and just like a little too far. Give them a sec to breathe. The kids are a mess, especially Buddy (which again, why you callin him Cal especially Cal Calvin). But I think the daughter bugs me most cause I can’t get over the nepotism of it all. Also just like the  “there hasn’t been a human kid here in 84 years” warning was also ominous and weird.
Obviously there was the “you can’t even say Merry Christmas” line which like, ok boomer. I’m real scared for how the Christ in Christmas shit he was spouting is gonna factor in.
So is Cider actually alcoholic in this universe now, cause they were acting much more like it was booze than they ever did with cocoa.
Shocked they mentioned Jack at all. Assume that will be it and we won’t see any of the Council at all
Also in one of the those dumb Allen interviews he said one version had lots of other mythical creatures but he thought that was weird and not in the spirit of the movies which like, ok fine if you’re only acting like 1 happened, but clearly you picked and chose what you wanted from 2 & 3 and then everyone is screaming about Gnomes! like what?
Jumping back I guess cause none of this is in order but when he went to the doctor I was like “where is Dr. Histmas” because idgaf about that character but that name is always funny to say. I like the new doctor elf though. Her name is Doc Martin though which is dumb
Except that she basically was referring to his magic going like it was ED and I was like, nope, no thanks!
idk how I feel about all the Kal Penn stuff. Like you’re sorta setting his story as a parallel to Scott’s but he seems to actually care about his kid and when you get to the Charlie scene (I’ll get there next) the line is that the pole is a bad place to raise kids so what does that do to his daughter if he becomes Santa
Charlie... oh Charlie Charlie Charlie. I like in theory what they did with him. Like he’s a good dad now and doesn’t need to learn the lesson his dad did so he’s like, no thanks. But the way they made his wife seem overbearing and crazy felt like it was more of that boomer crap and just kind of ruined the whole scene.
I think I have other things to say but they’re not coming to me now. I will say that my current prediction is, much like Daredevil in She-Hulk, Bernard won’t show up until the second to last or the last episode despite being in all of the ads. Like they’re teasing us cause they know we want to see him so they’ll save him for the very end. I’ve also joked that much like Daredevil in She-Hulk, Jenn’s gonna “smash” him
