in TONIGHT'S GAME, Samuel Ersson had:
0 saves
0 GA
N/A SV%
because he was over on the bench, but maybe he shouldn't have been, because in tonight's game, Cal Petersen had:
25 saves
7 GA
.781 SV%
while Tristan Jarry on the other end said Bet? and had
15 saves
6 GA
.714 SV%
So, a great night for goaltending in Pennsylvania.
NOT!!! Anyway.
Technically if you look at the save percentage, Cal Petersen was the better goalie, the Penguins just got more shots on goal. Perhaps the Flyers should have gone with their usual offensive tactic of quantity over quality, but I can't fault the goal-scoring tonight.
I can fault the offense for other things – there was a stretch of the second period where we didn't get a shot on goal for thirteen minutes of game time. Foerster scored his first goal of the night at 0:55 of the second and then Jarry didn't face another real SOG (there were misfires and blocks from Penguins defense) until 14:21 of the second period. With the goaltending being what it was tonight, it might have been nice to get a few shots to the net during that time span, but instead in those 13 minutes the Penguins hit Jamie Drysdale and found their footing in the power play and scored a bunch. A severely unfortunate sequence of events and I desperately hope that Drysdale has a brief and easy recovery.
12 forwards, 6 defense. (5 after Drysdale left the ice midway through the second.) Offense production was up. On the other hand: more goals against, on both sides. This may be the trade we make, but it's interesting to take note that this was the outcome. You do wonder what might have happened if Ersson had been in net, and you want to say that he would have stopped more shots – we don't know. Some of those were pretty gnarly. Defensive zone play was messy, offensive zone entries were immediately dumped back into the neutral zone by the Penguins, passes refused to connect and the Flyers spent a great deal of time chasing down the puck. A bad game. Or a good game. The Flyers continue to fight back and never cease their hard work and effort. At the very least, it is good to see them score a bunch of goals. That doesn't happen very often with this group.
All in all, while this game was likely a somewhat unfulfilling win for the Penguins, they got 2 points, and the Flyers got zero. I'm sure Tristan Jarry in the goalie tap line had some choice words for his colleagues.
