not to spider-man post on main tonight, but being a teacher was really the best thing that ever happened for peter. it combines his love of science with his desire to help others and be a part of/serve his local community. some of peter's best stories were during his teacher era when he was helping his students, both in the suit and out. plus, take it from me, an educator working in a publicly-funded institution, this career path is not the one that will lead you to money. it's really the most perfect choice for him.

been slowly rewatching the daredevil show again, and one piece of character portrayal i really love is — in 1x09, you see foggy and karen visibly emotional, falling to pieces in the morgue with mrs. cardenas's body, but you see no visible emotion on matt at all, save for that shot where his hands tighten their grip around his cane. you continue to see no emotion from matt, other than profound anger while fighting (and getting his ass kicked by) nobu, until the next episode, when foggy is grilling/confronting him after figuring out the truth.

then, and only then, do you see matt shed a tear at all, and then, and only then, do you see him start to break down.

and it's just... such a good encapsulation of the way he deals with emotions? (or, well, doesn't deal with them might be a better way of putting it.) he's all anger, very often misplaced, because he has no better way to deal with an unfair world, really, and he keeps shoving everything else down until he gets to a breaking point and he can't anymore.

it's one of the reasons why i think this adaptation is a good take on matt, because of the little understated show-don't-tell details in the writing and in charlie cox's performance like this.

i'm going to say something potential controversial. with the box office of ant-man 3 and shazam 2, i really don't think it's a bad thing that superhero movies are starting to bomb at the box office pretty bad, especially if mcu movies start taking this turn in earnest. i think these products have gotten lazy, and i think these studios have gotten lazier when making these products — and the only thing these studios listen to is money. these lazy, subpar products starting to bomb is the only way any kind of course correction will happen.

as loath as i am to give kathleen kennedy credit for a lot of things, i think lucasfilm has at least realized that the star wars sequel trilogy was a Mistake and they've been trying to recalibrate the brand. i know dc is in the process of shaking things up and, tbh, marvel studios needs a shakeup bad. i also wouldn't mind seeing the mcu lose some of its cultural capital and stranglehold on the film industry, so that would also be a net positive.
