#Veterans Day 2019 # Date: November 11, 2019 Today’s Doodle, painted by Massachusetts-based veteran and guest artist Pete Damon, celebrates Veterans Day in the United States. One of the country’s 10 federal holidays, this day specifically honors members of the nation’s arm… pic.twitter.com/UxTZw6HCLI — Goggle Doddle (@GoggleDoddle) November 11, 2019 During his 15-month recovery at the Walter Reed Medical Center, he received a set of prosthetic arms and a set of hooks, although, and although he was right-handed, he chose to use only one hook, attached to his left elbow, because his arm no longer I had an elbow. Through art therapy, Damon taught himself how to use his hook prosthesis to lift and use a pencil, which eventually flourished in his future career as a professional artist.
Pete Damon Veterans Day Google Doodle
Monday is Veterans Day in the United States, the day when Americans pause to honor and give thanks to those who have served in the US military. Google traditionally turns the focus of its Doodle each Nov. 11 to honor the contributions of those brave men and women, many of whom suffered life-altering injuries -- both physical and emotional. Pete Damon, the artist who created this year's Doodle, is an Army veteran severely injured in the service of his country who carries the reminder of that sacrifice with him every day.
Pete Damon Tributes Veterans
"Celebration of all those who serve is of paramount importance," says Massachusetts-based retired Army Sergeant & guest artist Pete Damon, creator of the #VeteransDay #GoogleDoodle. "I would not be alive today were it not for my fellow service members." → https://t.co/Bk3Y3P87Vk pic.twitter.com/42E3ylJcw0 — Google Doodles (@GoogleDoodles) November 11, 2019 Damon's oil painting on canvas, titled Paying Tribute, features two children wearing camouflage and a sailor's cap and planting American flags. For Damon, this is a familiar image.
Pete Damon Honored
This year, Google has chosen veteran Pete Damon to be the guest artist in charge of the Veterans Day 2019 Doodle. The Doodle is actually a beautiful painting, entitled “Paying Tribute,” depicting two children placing American flags in a field. I’ve... https://t.co/c1TkSGbcgI — Gilda M. Osmond (@OsmondGilda) November 11, 2019 Damon was honored to be asked to be part of the project, he admits to being a bit apprehensive about whether he was up to the task. But he was determined to give it his best because of his personal connection to the subject.
Pete Damon Blog
He described his inspiration for the piece on his blog "I can't begin to tell you how honored I am to have been chosen to do this painting. I can only hope that my particular painting style does day justice. My aim was to capture the hopes of all those who have served this great nation that their commitment and sacrifice to the cause of liberty will not be forsaken. Because make no mistake, each and every service member who dons the uniform and takes that solemn oath to defend the Constitution is indeed sacrificing a portion of their liberty, their safety, and in many cases their entire lives,  so that others may live and prosper in freedom. We as a nation must never forget that. The children in this painting represent the future. In dressing up in camouflage and sailor garb, they salute each branch of the armed forces as a whole. They are engaged in a common practice these days of decorating a field or clearing with little American flags in honor of Veterans Day. The subject of children planting flags is one I've painted many times now. I find it to be a moving and poignant symbol of hope, I hope you will as well. I want to thank the folks at Google for giving me the opportunity to honor our Vets. But on a more personal level, I want to thank the Veterans who sprang into action to save my life in a dusty, bombed-out aircraft hangar in Balad, Iraq some 16 years ago. I also want to thank the military doctors who resuscitated me, who operated on me, and who cared for me for the next 15  months while I recovered. I also want to thank the fellow injured Veterans I recovered with at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for your perseverance and inspiration. I want to thank those who have made it their life's mission to honor and provide for the support and care of our great Vets. Lastly, I would like to thank all the Veterans who serve to protect this great nation— past,  present, and future." Read the full article

Finland Independence Day 2023 Date: December 6, 2023 Today’s Doodle celebrates Finland’s Independence Day, a time for both festivities and solemn remembrance. On this day in 1917, the Finnish Parliament adopted the newly created Declaration of Independence and freed itself from the Russian Empire. Finland’s flag rises in the morning and can be seen across the country. Its colors of white and blue appear on decorations, pastries, and of course today’s Doodle. To honor the Finns before them who brought the country to freedom, people often lay wreaths at war memorials or graves. Others watch The Unknown Soldier to learn about the Second World War or attend a military parade that marches through Helsinki, complete with a flyover by the Air Force.  In the evening, many windows will be glowing from two candles. Several million will turn on the TV for the Independence Day Reception in the capital and hope to see their favorite public figure shake hands with the president. Happy Independence Day, Finland!
