synopsis: what i think dating ethan landry is like !

— definitely shy before asking you out and when you guys first start dating

— he asks chad for help on how to ask you out because he's completely clueless

— chad definitely made fun of him

— "dude, stop being so paranoid and just ask her out!" "what?! she's definitely going to say no!" "with that mindset, yeah."

— when he finally does get the courage to ask you out, he's all nervous

Do you know of any writing advice podcasts that don't suck? So many of them 1. list examples of TV shows for writing, both assuming you know the BBC show in question while also not acknowledging that writing something that's not going to get filmed means you don't have a soundtrack, actor, camera angles, etc. so actually doing something in purely written form is going to involve different techniques by necessity and 2. don't offer much advice beyond "do it, but, like, well. don't do it bad" which is so vague that a poster of a cat that says 'hang in there kitty' would be just as useful at this point. I want to get better at writing and "write like a BBC show! but not bad! do it good!" is not terribly inspiring.

I think I have a post somewhere on my Patreon bitching about how you totally can learn things from film, but you have to keep in mind that it's not 1:1 and too much advice relies too heavily on film/tv.

(Please, people. Film POV exists, kind of, but you cannot use it for a book without it fucking sucking.)

As for recs... IDK. I went looking for myself the other day and didn't find anything I loved. Youtubers too... it was all "Ten Reasons Your First Book Sucks" and then they were all things like "It's probably memoir and you're boring".

Anyone have suggestions? Anon wants audio, but I like textual blogs too. Just... you know... good and not bad. ;)

Hey Ghoul! I have a question, how do you write smut without it being juvenile and cheesy or too technical? I’m in the middle of writing an Alex Keller x reader story and I’m stuck on the smut lol

Hmm, get weird with it, that's my number 1 advice.

It's always going to feel technical and cheesy because you're the one writing it and reading it over and over and over again. My best advice is focus on different senses: touch, taste, hearing, sight, smell. You can also keep things vague if you think you're getting too technical, loosening things up or getting in the characters head can help with that.

Sometimes I get caught in a this happened, then this happened, then this happened loop, when usually during sex the only thing I'm really paying attention to is "Oh that felt good." So if your pov character isn't making note of what's good or what isn't good that can make things feel technical. Uuuuh, if you're getting bored your characters might be too? I change positions a lot during sex idk what that says about me or my partner, but you sort of shop around for what feels good if you're not just having a quickie.

I have told other folks this in my days writing but Holy shit virgins write good porn, I think it's because it's so idealized and a little vague. That's not really advice. Um, idk have you tried watching porn? Or like listening to an audio? Sometimes just getting yourself in the mood helps a lot.

Porn is a writing skill just like anything, you just gotta practice it. Try to write out what you want to happen as an outline, get the technical beats out of the way and then just go with the flow. It's fiction it doesn't have to obey all the rules of reality so if you think you're getting too technical jump to a part you're more excited to write and then go back to fill in the gaps.

Sometimes it just doesn't want to work. The words are in your brain but they don't come out right. Take a little break and come back to it. Don't be afraid to stream of consciousness it either, even if it feels like you're getting too into your personal kinks and it's getting weird. You're writing what you want to read, so write it. Get weird with it. Edit it in the morning. Who cares, it's your story.

Idk does any of that help? I feel like it doesn't.

On the left is Koby Riyo, a crow guy. He's a freelance horror artist that's semi-popular on Twitter. Being unable to pay his apartment rent, he bought and moved into a suspiciously cheap extravagant winter lodge, only to find out it's inhabited by a demon. Beats the rent pay, though.

On the right is Zlaxubuth the Powerful, an extremely powerful reality-bending demon who happened to mess with the wrong person, and ended up being sentenced to some snowy house by someone even more powerful. After screwing with each house inhabitant, there happened to be one person unfazed by all his scares.

Despite their differences, they ended up forming an unlikely bond. Love comes from the strangest of places, doesn't it?

I think about these two a lot.

I have a lot written about them, but I'll try to summarize it for the post.

So the story is, Koby couldn't pay for his apartment rent. He looked online and found a house in the Turran sector for an extremely cheap price. It wasn't even a rent, it's like whoever had it last wanted to get rid of it. He got the house and moved in. It's pretty big, significantly bigger than his last apartment. And with such a big house, you're bound to feel lonely. Except, he didn't. In fact, he couldn't help but feel like he was being watched.

On the other end, Zlaxubuth just got sentenced to this one house for using his reality-bending demon magic on the wrong person. How that person knew Luce, the Ruler of Hell, he had no idea. But now he could no longer leave without permission of either Luce or a house inhabitant. (In the case of the second one, his powers are extremely limited outside the house.)

He has full reign on the inside of the house though, so he still got to fuck with people, essentially haunting the house and putting each inhabitant through a horror movie. It was really the only entertainment he had. That changed when this bird guy gets the house. He's never met anyone like him before. Anyone so... Unfazed. By everything. Nothing he did worked. After trying for a long time, he eventually gave up.

Koby's pretty low-key like... All the time. When he isn't working on commissions, he's usually pretty lazy. His usual activities are browsing the internet, playing video games, or sleeping in bed. He didn't really think that much of the haunted-demon-house situation, so he wasn't really worked up about it at all. The only thing that mattered to him was that he had a place to stay. Zlaxubuth was bored out of his mind, with nothing to do. What he previously had for entertainment didn't exist with this guy around. So he just watched him go about his business.

One day, Koby was playing video games. Smash Brothers Ultimate, to be specific. Zlaxubuth came over, interested in what the hell he was doing. To his surprise, he actually started getting into it, and this began their bond with each other.

Zlaxubuth was pretty new to this friendship thing, so he had quite a bit of trouble understanding it. All he knew is that after spending so much time with this guy, he kinda... Enjoyed his presence? Weird.

They continued to bond with each other, and that bond got closer and closer as Zlaxubuth figured out more and more about himself and his own feelings... Sure enough, they started to have feelings for each other.

It's a strange relationship, but when is love not strange?

For reading all this (or not, maybe you skipped past it idk), you get this shitpost I made a while ago.

It's based off a video with the same audio that had Liam, Bryce, and Amelia from HFJONE in it and I have no idea what the source is or who the original artist of that was

The third person in the video is Hazel Kass, who I haven't posted about yet.

I've been thinking about how much I enjoy the way roleplay allows stories to live and grow as they're being told, how it creates such unique narratives that nobody would probably have come up with just writing a conventional story

To some extent this is also something that happens with serialised storytelling, like with many TV shows and audio dramas and comics and even serialised novels, whenever a piece of media isn't fully written in advance, where often the story changes along the way, actors might leave, audiences might latch onto a character nobody expected to be popular so the writers have to quickly write them into more stories, storylines might be so unpopular that they get retconned or otherwise redirected, or the writers might straight up change their minds about something in the middle, etc.

And the result is going to be different from what you'd get if you rewrote the whole thing from the start with the changes in mind. The latter will probably turn out more polished and maybe even actually better, but it won't have quite the same kind of organic charm

Conventional, carefully edited storytelling can be great, and I often appreciate it a lot and strive to achieve it myself, but I also tend to find it kind of boring. Sometimes even when it's great, even when I find it to be a really special and revelatory experience, even if I enjoy it a lot in the moment, I just don't end up going back to it. It doesn't occupy my mind the way more flawed works do (and after all, flaws often create texture and style and what would art be without those)

And like I said, often you don't get the truly unique and strange kinds of narratives in conventional fiction because the strangeness gets edited out and polished out of existence, or just never even comes up because people set out to write a Good Story that follows certain concepts of what makes a story good. Concepts that serialised storytelling often completely ignores, because it's always moving ahead and can't look back

And of course improv storytelling is that but even more so because in improv the whole thing is "written" live. Roleplaying can be fully improv but it can also be somewhat of a fusion of serialised storytelling and improv when there's some sort of GM guiding the story to an extent. (Also of course even in improv you can sometimes have some pre-planned story beats that you're trying to hit)

I really enjoy that sort of middle point between full improv and serialised storytelling where a lot of roleplay series in general live, but of course I particularly enjoy MCRP because there's something really fun about having a setting that the players are able to freely move around in and interact with in real time. I mean I guess the same could be said about other video game roleplay too but I haven't watched any lol (also I think in some ways Minecraft could be uniquely flexible because you really can interact with almost everything)

That's also why I tend to find it really frustrating when people try to make Minecraft storytelling more polished and pre-planned. I enjoy how organic it can be, that's its main charm factor for me

I have more thoughts but I gotta go now do real life stuff so idk maybe I'll continue later (also don't have time to proofread this, sorry, there might be typos and weird wording choices)

Athena Cykes being a robot (evidence being widget, how did she never get hurt/see blood, Métis “studying” just being working with her code, autism) or her dad being the Phantom (this evidence is more Métis based like how would the psychological profile work without a match, why didn’t she just kill him, why doesn’t Athena see Bobby as weird, Athena gets double autism genes) Both work well in any context. I like Phantomdad cause Athena and Apollo can bond over terroristic fathers <3

omg me specifically… such an honor… ok lemme think this thru (this is a long one)

• actually how does widget connect to her emotions… bc there is a way to judge how someone’s feeling based on bodily signs like pulse, temp., etc., but even at that a lot of emotions have very similar bodily reactions and part of determining how u feel is like… from the mind. if i remember my AP psych 5 correctly 😎 but also even at that widget wouldn’t logically have access to her thoughts that does not make sense unless metis like… chipped her??? or something????? which is still impossible

• i think if she’s sheltered enough then at 11 when she saw metis die, she might not have recognized it? but i feel it’s very implausible that she as a child would be so that intensely cautious + NEVER get into an accident + absolutely always be supervised enough to never get hurt. it is odd that her perspective would be that warped so that she’s unable to recognize it but idk. if she has no frame of reference is it human instinct to recognize blood… (i will not do further research at this time i am lazy)

• last two points u bring up i don’t think it’s mentioned what metis does specifically so no comment also elaborate on what you mean by the autism point because athena is giving neurodivergent but like what do you mean in context of that being evidence 😭

• she does seem to enjoy orange juice and little girl treats tho so how would that work… robots don’t really need to eat…

• also based on the navigation companions (ponco and clonco; only reason i know the proper term is for CAYA) why would her machinery be so more advanced than theirs? if aura and metis r capable of creating something so lifelike then why are ponco and clonco, made after her (i think) so far behind?

phantom dad ??:

• metis likely wouldn’t have a match for the phantom’s identity but it was simon who brought her the audio recording of the phantom’s voice i believe so that’s how she composed the psych profile knowing that. 95% sure because i had to look this up for CAYA

• tbf the phantom was wearing a jacket, but also yeah she likely could have done something in self-defense… but if they used the sword on her it’s likely any attempts @ self-defense wouldn’t have gone well regardless. there’s not really enough information in the game i don’t think to say whether or not there was an attempt or not

• bobby was able to fuck w his emotions in game and put on the appearance of emotions, if i remember correctly that was an aspect during the cross-examination/mood matrix part during it, so that’s likely why she didn’t find it off. and if she did, the game didn’t think to actually foreshadow anything by having her mention it either in passing or in her own narration during turnabout academy

i think athena and apollo both having terrorist fathers would be funny tho lol

but based on my minimal research as i consider this, the robothena one seems more plausible as it does better explain some of the illogical parts of the game. ofc it’s in the “future” but literally this made me realize that widget doesn’t make much sense with his ability to literally know what she’s thinking. like unless there’s some wack-ass science shit the writers just didn’t think necessary to share like… what is going on with that

1. Ian or Anthony?

The age old question huh?

You know what? I was asked this before (on a more shallow level I guess but it still fits) and I will repeat myself: "Anthony has Perfect Hair and is very attractive to me. But i was very much very intrigued by Ian as a whole from day 1 and that hasn't changed." (quote by me, sometime between july and now)

On a less shallow level: I relate to Anthony a lot regarding lots of things and respect his journey very much. But Ian - idk what it is, I was drawn to him since day 1 and can also relate to him on several levels. I genuinely find him hilarious. I also know/knew and like(d) people in RL that are very much like him. (Or, at least the way he makes us perceive him.)

5. Do you have a favorite Smosh video? What is it?

I just thought to myself: why did I reblog this ask game? Why am I doing this to myself? I generally am VERY bad at answering questions about favorite things. I cheat all the time. I have several favorite Smosh videos, depending on the criteria. But I'm gonna go with the answer that is probably the most boring one:

Pokémon Theme Song from 2005. (rip)

To me it symbolizes a lot of things and without it I probably wouldn't have found Smosh - or I would've, but a lot later. It evokes many good feelings in me and finding it for sure changed some stuff and influenced me, even though I didn't know it at the time. Lot's of momentous things happened to me in 2006, discovering Smosh via this video was one of them.

7. What is your favorite series on Smosh (main channel)?

Let's do This! !! Followed by uh maybe Pokémon in Real Life, Funeral Roasts and Interviewing Exes.

Would you believe me if I told you that I was stuck on this question for like half an hour? T_T I really like many series on that channel and they did so many different things... And in the end it's still a tie. It's the very basic (?) and classic Gametime w/ Smosh and the very uh, basic (?) Board AF :')

13. Do you ship anything/love any friendship pairs?

I'm actually fine with any ships, romantically or platonically. If I watch any combo long enough and imagine them in random situations I can see them as a ship (platonic or otherwise), or a intriguing combo at the very least. I do enjoy content about Ian &/ Anthony, and pretty much other popular combos. A combination I've seen less of and that I love is Tommy + Ian and Courtney + Ian. However you want to interpret this, I love their dynamics and what my head provides me with about them. As a sidenote and apart from any shipping business: Courtney's and Ian's friendship is very very dear to me, if you (general) have any clips/interview/audio/whatever where their friendship is being shown/the topic, feel free to send it to me. I would be so so grateful :')

15. What castmember do you think you are most like?

Ok so I asked my sibling because I wasnt sure about this. And they said: Ian, Sarah (we both miss her dearly and we'll count her as cast for this) and Amanda. I agree tbh.

I'm very exited and am looking forward to it very much, and it looks very good. But I enjoy the Food Battle series on a rather meta level and am not as emotionally involved as with other stuff.

I'm tired of writing this already because my Dr. Lamb is either the most boring, unemotive, or noble person imaginable. This is the whole reason I have been avoiding her section. The reason: Dr. Lamb is, and has always been, a huge nothingburger. In-game, she's just That Way. She doesn't BECOME That Way, she just is, and it's arguable she has always been so. There's even an audio diary that suggests she has had designs on Rapture since time immemorial (lol wat).

This is because BioShock 2 is a fucked-up attempt at a Christian gnostic allegory and Dr. Sofia Lamb is a stand-in for the Aeon Sophia. It's awful for a lot of reasons that I'll get into someday--not the least reason for which is that THE LITERAL AEON SOPHIA IS IN THE FUCKING GAME. The allegory cannot fucking work if you just stick the actual fucking Aeon Sophia alongside your allegorical symbol for the Aeon Sophia. Then it's not an allegory, is it? That said, 2K Marin probably made this game without sleeping or regular human contact so they can be forgiven for a lot.

Anyway, I decided to start her as an Objectivist and a human being, if an extremely autistic and traumatized one, and move her left.

What makes a person decide to be an Objectivist and isolate oneself on the bottom of the ocean is equally present in certain individuals and movements on the left: it's a deep insecurity and a sense of powerlessness because one can't control what other people do. So if you can't control other people, you CAN try to minimize their impact on you and just straight-up leave. It's the completely futile effort to control as many environmental factors as possible to make the least surprising world possible.

Where this impulse heads into toxic territory is when these kinds of people get really frustrated and just try to apply force. "ALL Y'ALL BETTER JOIN THE CLUB OR I'M GETTING THE BAT"

So... where do I exhibit this toxic behavior in Lamb? And why doesn't it feel natural to me? I've actually given her more emotive states than she has in-game. She's more reserved, to be sure, but she still fucking feels things and is motivated by those feelings, even if she lies to herself about it. Moreover, one cannot be reserved 100% of the time. One will and can snap, and sometimes those kinds of people snap in nasty ways because they're keeping most of their stress inside and hidden.

I suppose I should make her a little more toxic from the beginning. I've actually made her extremely sensible. I try to give most of my characters laudable traits, even if they're pure fuckers--issues they're right about or ways they're competent and skilled. I may have made her TOO competent and sensible. She may be too boring for fiction, idk. There's a reason nobody in fandom likes to write about her. We all know somebody just like her irl and we try to escape them as quickly as possible; we don't want to actually write about their judgy holier-than-thou asses for any length of time.

I'm very frustrated about this and I'm not sure how to fix it. It feels like a systemic issue, like a flaw or behavior that should be present from the beginning. I should probably try and make her more controlling from the beginning, but that'll take some rewriting and editing... guhhhhhh. Not during NaNo.

I might brainstorm some weird shit that I could make her do to fuck up the story a bit and see what seems natural and sticks.

I mean, if you have an idea, or have read a story with Lamb in it that you think is particularly good, hit me up ok

Disclaimer I am just a guy on the internet having a self indulgence time for fun, my grasp on canon vs Fanon is shakier than when I tried rope climbing in P.E also I am not a trained medical professional all things related to adhd I talk about come from Personal Experience or further research FOOD AND TEXTURE: fun fact, people with adhd can hyper fixate on foods, found that out from my mom’s doctor. so I think dick definitely has foods that he fixates on and will prefer to eat over other foods. also he would have foods he just can't fucking eat because of taste or texture, like for example when I was younger I refused to eat fried eggs but I would eat boiled eggs, even better example jellies and puddings are things I can eat bc it activates my gag reflex and I hate the way they feel, physically can't swallow them without feeling sick. so ya know ya boy is gonna project that onto the dickster lol. I think he would probably hyperfixate on foods that fall into a similar category of each other I know I do lol. my food hyperfication has been crushed up instant ramen. and has been for a while but specially a certain kind. think dick would hyperfixate on certain brands of cereal because ive seen the “dick likes sugar cereal” thing floating around, and because this the projection corner I think he prefers to eat it a certain way, probably dry because of easy transporting and he can bring as a quick snack for when hes on the go, but I think he also would like the crunchy texture and mouth feel. again projection corner I think he would fucking hate gelatinous foods with a passion. but also like gritty foods would probably be a no go. like he can eat them if he needs too because bat training and all that doesn't mean he would enjoy it lol. and like I feel like when hes knighting hes just in a consent state of near discomfort bc hes masking so hard(lol) so when hes dick Greyson he sorta lets lose a bit and his symptoms are worse or hes allowed to be particular about things like food when hes a civilian. and I think he probably likes the texture of the nightwing suit otherwise he would peel his skin off. projecting is fun so I think he would hate rough and scratchy clothes and bed sheets are the bane of his existence so he kicks them off before going to bed other wise he can't sleep. he probably fidgets with his gadgets quite a bit especially when on patrol and hes looking around and nothing much is happening. I think dick would do the leg bounce tm as a civilian a lot maybe play with his hair if its long, or just generally messing with with when hes nervous or fidgeting. idk I guess im making nightwing his “nooo guys dw im super normal im just like everyone I am a functional put together adult haha” which its funny bc masking. I think dick is the kinda guy that would leave his sodas out overnight so they stop being fizzy bc he hates the feeling of the fizz(projecting) but yeah overall I think he prefer sweeter foods as like his comfort/perfered foods. I also like the hc that he can cook he just doesn't have a lot of time too, so he snacks a lot bc he needs the energy. adding my own shit onto it, executive dysfunction got his ass like “I could get up and make a sandwich I know what I need to do I have the ingredients and im hungry but I can't fucking get up to do it” anyway funtimes in hyperfixation with grem thanks for reading the insane rambles <3

ok the objectively correct but also boring answer is tsukihi. but shes a shoo-in so i dont wanna talk about her. she doesnt count she's unbeatable! realistically, if ougi were to be doing a bmx race and be faced with her, they would simply Not Race lol

ok first i will talk about the people who wouldn't cheat. (spoilers up to nademonogatari under the cut meaning nademonogatari is included)

kanbaru would not cheat she would want to do it fair and square. she would train for the occasion but she doesnt know how to ride a bike (semi canonically? idk how canonical the audio commentaries are) so she’d probably struggle, and even though she’s athletic i can’t imagine she’d win or get close to it (rip). karen would have the best chances of winning legitimately. i’d imagine she probably knows how to ride a bike bc shes got easy access since koyomi is always riding them. and her level of fitness is absolutely insane, so she could pull it off. but ougi has lots of bicycle experience, and does like tricks and stuff for it. and they can do crazy stunts without worrying about damage to the user. so its a toss up here, but karen could win. hanekawa would not win. ougi would not allow it, their pride would not allow it. hanekawa would try to win, as part of her rivalry with them. but ougi would probably rather die than allow her to win especially when it concerns a hobby of theirs so they dont its as simple as that. i dont think hanekawa would be too much of a challenge, but she’s very powerful and unpredictable so ougi would take no chances. eliminate with extreme prejudice. now for the last of the non-cheaters, koyomi (surprisingly). dont get me wrong he would absolutely cheat against like at least half of the other cast if he felt like he couldn’t win easily or if he started losing. but he would be way too terrified to cheat against ougi. and there’s absolutely no way he wins against ougi without cheating, i mean come on. ougi can do cool little tricks and knows all his weaknesses. i think he would keep up decently at first but ultimately be completely destroyed near the end of the race.

ok now for the cheaters 😈 (spoilers: none of them could win)

nadeko would cheat here because she would know that she has no chance of winning whatsoever if she doesnt, and she doesnt really like ougi all that much so she doesnt feel too bad about it. now the WAY she decides to cheat varies. nadeko would much rather rely on her own abilities instead of asking yotsugi or tsukihi for help, so she might draw a shikigami of anti-nadeko (or a more cooperative version with the same strength) to throw/boost her instead, which you could argue is technically not cheating because its still her own power moving the bmx. senjougahara really cheats? no dignity! she would act like shes gonna do it fair and square and then totally shamelessly cheat bc she doesnt think she can win at all. i think she would race normally, and then once ougi got far ahead enough she would try to cut ahead by going off the tracks and taking a shortcut. i think i can picture a universe where sodachi cheats so heres what she’d do. and she’s probably the most creative one about it. i think, given her penchant for careful and precise planning, she would add obstacles to the course. its hard to do and it would take a while, but its also hard to check for if you do it right. she wouldnt even necessarily have to buy materials either, assuming the race doesnt happen somewhere built for the purpose of bicycle racing. she could just move stuff from the general terrain around the course to make it look like it was something that happened by accident, while having knowledge of where the traps were and how to get past them. think like moving around rocks and boulders, small logs and dirt piles and stuff like that. stuff that could put the bicycle off balance, or would require slowing down or rerouting, especially stuff that looks deceptively harmless. shinobu would cheat, but not intentionally, she just has no interest in the rules and doesnt intend to learn what they are. so the moment the race starts, in order to “get to the goal the fastest” she goes off track. yotsugi ABSOLUTELY cheats, but probably not in an interesting way. she just uses unlimited rulebook to boost her bike into the air. i think she potentially maybe could use it to just speed up, but i think she wouldnt have the patience for that at all and would rather just skip the whole race asap. mayoi is unable to ride the bmx. she just isn’t good at it. she’s small and its kinda big and unwieldy so its just hard to do. i think her cheat would be the kind of cheat that doesnt really have much practical chance of succeeding long term, like tying her bmx to ougi’s so she can get pulled along. i think she’d try to frame it as like a cooperative thing like let’s get to the finish line together type deal. but i cant see her having the heart to actually betray someone right at the finish line, so she would just lose. she probably wouldnt care that much anyway

but the reason why not just hachikuji but none of the cheaters would have a chance at winning is because while ougi could potentially be miffed at losing, there’s no way they’d let a cheater slip by. and they’d have a lot of fun catching the cheats and working around them. they would examine for possible cheats based on the opponent and prepare countermeasures far in advance-- all in all, cheating is bad against ougi because its like when you pirate a game and the final boss becomes impossible to beat on your copy. youre ramping up the difficulty to such an extreme level that its better to just do it legit. ougi’s ability and desire to win probably increases exponentially if their opponent is cheating, as well as their enjoyment of the race.

here’s how they would deploy the countermeasures:

ougi would definitely anticipate the shikigami move and have some countermeasures in mind. i imagine they might try to convince anti-nadeko she’s being used for a silly purpose (she is) and make her not want to help, OR the much more Fun way they would go to the drawing in the notebook right before nadeko brings it to life and erase the arms without nadeko noticing. so it has no arms and can’t help her. oops! senjougahara’s move... it’s just kinda silly. i think it’s too silly for ougi to prepare anything really crazy. if anything they prolly just pick to do the race at a time + place where the shortcuts aren’t actually helpful at all. like construction blocking the way, rocky terrain, that sort of thing. and then they’d just do the race and win normally sodachi’s planning is her own downfall as usual :( ougi is very cool and just uses the added obstacles as like ramps and shit. and uses the ramps to go over harder obstacles, or just fucking lifts the bmx up somehow like in otorimongatari. and sodachi just doesnt have that kinda technical prowess, or the ability to predict that someone would be able to do that (which is reasonable). rip as for shinobu, she’s instantly disqualified so ougi just goes off track with her for the hell of it (and wins anyway, of course) yotsugi’s impatience gets the best of her here-- she’d have had a lot easier time if she had just tried to speed herself up, but by attempting a leap she leaves herself wayy more open to counterattacks. i think ougi would choose the most slapstick way of going about this so i’d imagine that, understanding that unlimited rulebook involves a lot of explosive force, they would bring a slingshot to the race. and they’d wait till yotsugi tried to use the rulebook and then with one perfectly placed projectile, knock yotsugi’s foot to the side juuust so, so that the angle of the leap is altered, and she goes careening away at high speed. teehee shouldnt have cheated! of course yotsugi would be fine even after a crash bc shes a doll, so its okay to go for more dangerous counterattacks in ougi’s mind. for hachikuji, she wouldnt have the opportunity to not betray ougi bc she wouldnt get to the finish line tow truck/three legged race style in the first place. she would be like “lets get there together” and ougi would just pull out a pair of scissors and be like “nope ✂” even though they know she probably wouldnt even try to win. they are just devious like that

so yeah none of the cheaters would win. ougi would want more of them to cheat so they could win anyway and have fun with it. like ooh youre cheating now i can be evil. honestly same

Suzume Movie Review

ok so where do I start [checking notes aka last night rants on my twitter]. I always want to elaborate my review so it's not just "It's great!" but without spreading spoilers. Now I'm confused haha.

Visual

Amazing as usual. Not just realistic, the colors are also, how do I put it, pleasant to eyes? Especially the colors in the sky part. Sometimes I caught myself gawking to the screen, it's That Prettyyy :")

Audio

Very suitable is an understatement, idk how to explain audio shjsja. There are some sad scenes that I don't feel any sad (im old ok), but the background song spreads the vibes immensely that I'm ended up tearing up a bit. Definitely added to my daily playlist!

Characters

Suzume and Souta has very different character, but somehow compatible. An adventurous highschooler that could rebelling against her family to do things she wants and a very family-oriented college student that resigned to his fate as the Closer (and eventually the Keystone).

As for the side characters, Tamaki-san is my favorite. She's a hardworker, worrywart but ofc that's understandable. Souta's grandfather is kinda annoying at the hospital scene, but that's reasonable too, mind you he came from different generation from Suzume and Souta's. Their characters are very realistic, Asian parents' brand.

Plot

Disaster happened -> Two strangers meeting -> They fight the calamity together -> Strangers-to-lovers trope. Boring? I saw others review on twitter and they said yes these kind of plot is boring, besides three Makoto Shinkai's movies in a row has the same general plot. BUT NOT FOR MEEE. They are similar but still different in soo many ways.

Compared to the other two (Your Name and Weathering With You), it's the female lead that help the male lead to comeback to mortal world. Suzume's ending is not an open ending, no one forget each other, just they happily ever after. The calamity still exists as long as the world is but they had each other. ROMANCE IS NOT DEAD

Conclusion

SOOOO I love this movie!!!!!!!! I'm never get bored of Makoto Shinkai's strangers-to-lovers story, even if as the older I watch them the more I can't relate with how the leads falling in love with each other in just a week or so. Guess that's a personal thing lol.

Also this review is very biased bcs I was watching at 4DX 2D studio, where my experience must be different from watching at the 2D ones. It cost twice than the usual 2D tix (count it 6 times bcs I paid for my sister and brother's tix hhhhhhH), but hella worth the price!! Highly recommend to watch in 4DX if it's available in your place for the best experience.

When Tamaki-san yelled at Suzume at the parking lot... I totally get it. I felt that sometimes towards my cats. Her anger and worry is understandable. I too will yell and shout at my children if they run away from home and can't tell me the reasons and just say "you won't understand it".

ANDD still on Tamaki-san and Suzume's bantering, when Suzume yelling back "That's why it feels suffocating!!", damnnn was it hits so close to home.

I amazed with Suzume's courage when she was trying to hitch-hiking car. I could neverrrr trust strangers :/ (but that's fiction for you ig)

Song Storytime Sunday

SO back in freshman year I took geometry (I took alg in 8th), the class was easy and my classmates were nice (mostly). At some point thoughout the year me and this girl, I'll call her C, get sat next to eachother. She was funny, I was funnier (in my opinion) we get along and become good friends.

I, a artist, noticed that her headphones were audio-technica m40s, valued at $100+. for those who don't know, that's a popular audio brand for professional audio. (Aka, not just regular headphones). I asked her where she got them from and then she told me about this radio camp she went to. Now also, as a artist, every single one of us gets excited when we hear the word "radio". Getting radio play is usually the #1 milestone for any small artist. So, when she said "radio" + "camp" I basically went like "!!!!".

We talk about it for a few days and eventually she shows me her radio "learners guide". It's really all common sense but it had a few funny moments. There was a list with words that you can't say on the radio. Including:

So anyways, I get her discord and apply for the summer camp that year (past the deadline). I wasn't expecting to get in, but I put down that I knew C on my application. School was ending, but me and C keep in touch through sending each other memes on Instagram and Discord.

C texts me, "she (wxox leader girl) says you can come in the last day of camp if youre free". i was SOOOO EXCITED. I replyed cool, when where how?". One thing led (lead?) to another, and I was inside the broadcast center one afternoon in July.

i did the hellos you usually do when you walk into a building, and waited on the couch in the lobby. (there was some cute boys there but i digress), C walked in and we start to talk about the books in the room. eventually, thats boring so she led me around to say hi to the other DJs who were early in a tour like fashion. there's not much to say about that, but I will note that I introduced myself as DJ Fruity 🏳️‍🌈 to the other DJs.

We go back in and the leader girl walks in and does a presentation/speech type thing and introduces me to the djs who came in after my tour. not much to note here, but everyone was very nice.

we go into the studio and a very professional looking guy comes in with us. he shows me this LOOONG radio contract. I dont sign without reading, so I sit and read it for a moment.

"we reserve the right to use, share, publicize, and monetize your radio show in perpetuity"

(normal talk: we own everything you say on the radio forever)

The other guys before us were doing some talk show, and were running overtime (a serious infraction in the radio world apparently). very professional guy comes in and ushers them out. I fiddle with the headphones (also m40s) for a while (they fold on themselves), professional guy helps me, and then it was time to go on air.

we snap a pic first:

C: "Hi, this is me, DJ C (forgot her dj name) and today the show is about national r&b history (something). I'm here along with..." she pauses for me to answer (thankfully)

Me: "dj create!"

(I figure you can't identify as DJ Fruity on radio)

I forget what she says next, but somehow we get onto the topic of my music "career" (i still consider it a hobby).

C: "which one of your songs did you you have the most attachment to?"

me: "I released this one song back near the start of my "career" titled albu, its real emo. the whole song is a extended metaphor with internal conflict and a lake"

She starts playing the first song, 🎵Killing Me Softly With His Song🎵. (by Lauren Hill) Anyone who's listened knows that that song knows that it ends with... a not so radio friendly bit. so we had to quickly abort halfway through the song and we go into a interview type thing.

C: "do you wanna play a song?"

me: "idk any good r&b songs"

C: "it doesn't have to be r&b, just radio friendly"

So, I played the song of the day, ls6 on the radio for r&b day. if you're listening to the song you obviously realized, it's not a r&b song, but everyone loved it anyways. I loved the experience, and I hope I get to attend the full boot camp next year. Shout out (to whoever read this whole thing) to WXOX 97.1 FM radio Louisville ❤️ (they also go by ARTxFM sometimes, Idk the difference, sblmk)

Jungkook Camping Vlog & Rare Taem: Hybe vs SM as content creators

Jungkook's camping vlog just dropped so I thought it would be fun to do a review of it and a comparison to SM content that has some similarities so we can illuminate the content style of each company.

Jungkook's content was a vlog: a video blog. We all know what a blog is because we're on one now (lol). Web logs are usually informational or diary-style. Jungkook's vlog is diary-style; he's showing us what he's doing as he doing it, and giving us commentary on what's happening through the captions (placed later in editing) as well as his in-the-moment commentary in the video itself. This gives him the opportunity to comment on himself reflexively, and it gives us a view into how he sees himself in our shared arena of media.

Hybe's vlog style is very minimalistic. The commentary is minimal, if at all present. There is a lot of "negative" audio space; we see JK sitting quietly a lot or just partaking in activities without commentary. It's noticeable, too, that he is not alone in the vlog, but the vlog cuts out his companions even though they're constantly present and interacting with him. We can assume they did other things than what was shown. For example, JK bought fireworks but we never saw the fireworks lit. But what we see is heavily limited.

What did we see? We saw travel, mukbang, and some quiet time where JK stared off at the ocean. Even though this was his first camping experience, he felt quite prepared for it (LOL); he envisioned swimming but the weather didn't cooperate; he vibed to music a lot both during travel and while at the campsite. It was a simplistic vlog where not much happened, and at times JK himself seemed bored out of his tree. And this is very usual for Hybe's style.

What self-reflection can we observe from JK's captions as he examines himself on film? He's still hard on himself and his experience, and there's a dissoance between what he thinks when making the captions and what he said or did in the vlog. And this very relatable. If we had to watch ourselves on holiday we'd likely feel similar—why am I saying or doing that? Or wow *cringe* I can't even watch this, as JK tells us.

Before I get into the formal critique and comparison, I would like to say how much I loved and enjoyed the vlog. JK was adorable and captivating to watch, even while doing nothing. And this is Hybe's bread and butter. Creating content that says nothing virtually, but satisfies its demographic.

Let's remember BTS In the Soop. Soop was a reality series but there isn't much difference in style when it comes to this vlog save for the captions being created by the subject. The pacing of Soop was glacial, and it is the same in this vlog. And most importantly, nothing happens. With perhaps the exception of Soop 1 where Taekook had a mild standoff and Jikook got wild drunk, nothing happened. Soop 2 was this times 1000x. Nothing happened. Chatter was minimal as was interaction at times, or so it seemed. Hybe's content strategy harnesses personality and presence to create something out of nothing, and this vlog and BTS Soop are great examples of this.

We can compare JK's camping vlog to the vlog style mini-reality series SM did called Rare Taem. JK's vlog was 45 minutes, while Rare Taem was ~120 minutes split over 5 short episodes. It sees Taemin camping in a two-room cabin for a night, accompanied only by the producers who remain behind the scenes.

This is one interesting difference. Hybe's producers were JK's companions, eating, talking and travelling with him, but we never see them. SM's producers were not TM's companions; they were there to film and provide support. Notably, when TM can't work the iron furnace thing (idk), the cabin owner comes, and we see him help TM learn to use it, which is what would happen if you were really camping/cottaging on your own. There is an attempt to separate production staff from the "scene" whereas with Hybe the boundaries are fluid. They film JK but still constantly interact with him.

Rare Taem feels like a vlog because it's solitary—arguably more solitary than JK's vlog—and it's personal. We see TM in the intimate space of the cabin and traversing the tasks given to him just like in JK's vlog: grocery shopping, cooking, self-reflecting and resting. Even TM goes on VLive while filming, just like JK does in his vlog.

SM made this content episodic, and it does also fit the reality series label it has because of the format. TM is given a game of tasks to do at intervals during his stay. He does things and has to take photos of them to create a memory box to keep, with the idea being that what he's doing are things he rarely gets to do or has never done before, such as camping. This is where there is a nice overlap with JK's camping vlog because JK tells us it's his first time, too. In both videos, we see the process of novel rest and self-reflection in two people who started working at 14 and never had time to do things others their age have done. And that in itself is interesting. SM used that for its concept explicitly, while Hybe lets its personality share that organically.

Hybe is very much about organic yet active self presentation. There content banks on cult of personality to draw in viewers to watch minimalistic content. SM's strategy is opposite; their content is highly structured and planned, and depending on the concept, designed to capture real reactions to planned setups. It is more traditional reality programming. In the later episodes of Rare Taem, Kai and another friend of Taemin's come to join him for a barbecue. TM has been on his own so he's excited for the company, and when they leave, we see that moment that everyone knows well—when it becomes silent and solitary again—and we experience his thoughts and emotions. This type of simple set up is what can make reality content compelling: genuine reactions to planned situations.

Hybe eschews this, however. Even in Soop, which is labelled reality content, there are no setups—not even simplistic ones. Everything is organic to the personalities present, and any minor plot point that may occur arises strictly from those present.

This is why I find Hybe's content boring at times. Yet, I didn't find JK's blog boring. Those 45 minutes flew by, even though I could see JK himself looking bored. That is the genius of Hybe's content style and strategy. It's the magic of the cult of personality. SM doesn't cultivate that so it can't rely on it. And I'm not here to say one is better than the other; as a media consumer, it comes down to personal taste in most cases.

If I compare JK's vlog to Rare Taem in terms of my personal taste and let my "biases" battle it out (LOL), I enjoy both for similar reasons because I like both for their relatability and self-reflections. I love TM's ability to understand and have empathy for himself and to share that in the moment and the funny things he says/does (the man's mind went to SAW when he realized he was playing games in the cabin, and he went to chase ghosts in the middle of the night after watching a horror film... relatable!). And I love JK's cynicism towards himself as he made the captions (also heavily relatable). Part of bias culture is self-reflection, so in seeing their self-reflections I'm also reflecting on myself in turn. And that's enough to make what is otherwise simplistic media compelling for me.

Im about to watch RWBY Volume 9 because I need some background noise while I translate a german version of Jesus Christ Superstar and then I remembered that I watched that RWBY DC crossover a few days ago as background noise while I made my lyric videos and then I wanted to make a post about my thoughts but then I just. never did. So I might as well do it now

Before that though, I feel the need to explain myself and my lyric-video-translation process. Basically, what I do is I pick my song that Id like to translate from german to english and then I make what is essentially a normal lyric video, which involves a lot of me listening to the song a bunch of times so I can make sure everything is properly synched up, in this particular case I actually had to listen to the entirety of the song in order to make sure it was actually synched because something went horribly wrong with my editing app and I couldnt figure out how to fix it. And then once Im done with my lyric video I can just kinda turn the audio off and add my english translation without worrying about anything because Ive already synched everything up properly. When I do musical soundtracks like this I usually synch up all the lyrics for all the songs first before getting to the actual translation process, which means theres a long period of time where Im just kinda listening to the same part over and over, except worse and it took me even longer this time because again, something went wrong and I had to listen to the songs from the beginning, otherwise it just inexplicably wouldnt synch up, and because I have a low attention span Im usually watching youtube videos or movies Ive already seen at this point

Now, I was still in the lyric video stage when I watched this movie (I was doing Pilate and Christ if youre curious) so picture this: im sitting in front of my computer, I have this RWBY DC crossover open in some piracy site bc I was looking for A Movie and this one came out recently so it was on the front page, I have my tablet with the lyric video Im about to make in front of me, Im wearing headphones, one of them isnt actually on my ear because I need to be able to hear both the song and the movie at the same time, Im playing the song over and over again as I watch the movie, slowly zoning out entirely the further I get into it because thats just kinda what happens when youre forced to listen to the same first two minutes of a song even when you do have some background noise to break up the monotony a little

The reason Im giving you that long winded explanation of the boring shit I do for fun is because I want to stress to you that I was practically physically incapable of properly paying attention to anything. So you would think that I would also be incapable of finding shit to criticize or complain about, after all, I barely managed to watch the movie

And you would be very wrong. Im gonna be honest I just wrote that long intro to whatever this is in like 20 minutes and Ive already run out of steam so please enjoy this bullet point list of mostly shit I didnt like about this crossover, as someone who doesnt know anything about DC and also didnt pay a lot of attention just in general

The Justice Leagues semblances were so bad you can tell they just kinda took their existing superpowers, barely if at all modified them and went "yep, those are semblences alright" and as a result Superman, Wonderwoman and Green Lantern all basically have the same semblance, which inexplicably consists of multiple unrelated abilities and also Vixen's semblance seems pretty similar to theirs as well

The dialogue was so awkward man, I know some stan is gonna try and defend it by being like "well none of these people know each other ofc theyre gonna be awkward" guess what, i dont care if you can like stuff about this show for no reason I can dislike stuff about this show for no reason

That weird love triangle between Nora, Ren and Cyborg was so weird and unnecessary and idk why it was there

'Weird, unecessary and idk why it was there' is honestly a great way to describe this whole movie, I dont get why they did this Isekai thing with the Justice League I feel like this wouldve been better if they were already just characters in RWBY's world but I guess then neither continuity would be able to really consider it canon which would be bad I guess??? Idk i think this crossover thing was a bad idea tbh and they shouldve made it more of a cross-promotional thing where its like "lookat the RWBYfied versions of these DC characters!!" "oooooo look at the DCified versions of these RWBY characters!!" for one movie each if you know what I mean

Speaking of pointless romance, I saw some people say that they didnt like the weird romantic subplot between Bruce and Weiss but honestly, I didnt even see one there they had less romantic sparks flying between them than Bumbleby and thats saying a lot, not that I was paying too much attention

Ive seen some DC fans say that Bruce's thing about him maybe not wanting to leave Remnant because hes got powers there was really out of character and idk anything about that, I just know that that whole thing was pointless and barely set up and didnt mean anything at all for anyone

Ruby's arc about learning to be a better team leader is something that she shouldve had in like volume 4 max this is too late into the show for the Main Character whos been leading A Team since basically day one to learn how to do it, then again its not like shes gotten any meaningful screentime in the past 9 years so maybe that justifies it

Killgore or Killg%re or whatever was just cringe

When Killgore was explaining his plan and how he was working with someone and then it turned out that he was actually trapped in this VR world by that someone, I thought, oh its probably Salem given that shes yknow, the main villain. I mean, it doesnt really make sense why she would do all this shit but its not like her motivations and actions have ever been consistent right. And then he was like "he" and I went, its fucking Ironwood?? Are you joking?? Like, yeah, I'll give them a smidge of credit here, that does make more sense but I hate how these guys' weird desire to demonize Some Guy gets in the way of even attempting to make The Actual Main Villain even remotely threatening. Someone tell MKEK that sidelining a female character in favor of a male character isnt suddenly less sexist because shes Satan Herself but they wanna villanize the "shitty white guy" instead

The action scenes were decent enough, obviously nowhere near the level of Volume 1-3s fightscenes but Ive definitely seen worse from RWBY at this point

I guess the mystery aspect was fine too I was atleast kinda intrigued

And to end this whole thing on a somewhat positive note, heres some stuff I actually kinda liked:

While the isekai thing honestly doesnt seem like a good idea, it was still kinda fun watching people from a setting more similar to our world interact with Remnant and try to blend in even though they had no idea what was going on

I kinda liked Barry, he was pretty fun

I really liked Jessica, her finding that ring and saying that rhyming incantation actually gave me goosebumps, her VA was really good. I just wish she didnt spend all her screentime with Jaune and also I wish Jaune died already

I liked that they were wearing their Beacon Era outfits for most of it so I didnt have to endure their absolutely horrendous Atlas outfits although I am about to watch Volume 9 and they dont get an outfit change from what Ive seen so. You cant run from your problems forever I guess

Thats about it, but to bring this thing full circle Id like to once again elaborate on my lyric video translation stuff. Right now Im fully done with the lyric videos and all I gotta do is add in the english translations which I can do without needing to listen to the music, which means I can actually listen to the dialogue at the very least even if Im not properly looking at the screen. I was originally gonna do the same thing with Volume 9 as the crossover movie which is to say, blast music while watching and fully zoning out half the time but I figured the actual volume deserves a little more respect than that. I mean, thats still not a lot but RT isnt getting any more than this from me

16. the book that made u fall in love with reading?

oh gosh. um. the first series i was every into as like a young young child was the little house on the prairie series but i think the first book/series i ever really liked for like the Themes and Artistry was the gregor the overlander series hot damn those books made me so upset as like an 8 year old child. if u remember i wanted to have my 9th birthday party be gregor the overlander themed. with like giant rats and cockroaches i guess. it would been fucking awesome

20. do u prefer audio books or e-books?

i read a lot of ebooks bc theyre the easiest format to get ahold of but i dont have fond feelings towards them. whereas i am a certified audiobookhead certified freak for audiobooks. bc i like reading while walking around or drawing and i like voice acting

21. hardcovers or paperbacks?

hardcovers for modern books bc im a book cover HATER if a cover is bad it will distract me and most hardcovers u can take the dust cover off and burn it as a sacrifice to Big Graphic Design. however in an ideal world with no hideously ugly covers i would read exclusively paperbacks small enough to fit in a hoodie pocket <3

22. a book that u hated at first but now love it?

this may be kind of a cop out answer but the translation of the odyssey i read in high school english was extremely boring and cliche and the version i read in college (tr. emily wilson) gave me a bit of a diff perspective… i still wouldnt say i love it but i have a healthy respect for it

i really dont know if i can think of an answer for this… i feel like even really stupid books i loved as a kid i can appreciate for what they are even if i wouldnt read them now

by god. nona the ninth. literally perhaps the book on this earth that has made me the most upset. all 3 locked tomb books made me cry but for weeks after reading nona i would randomly start crying just thinking about how she never got to have her first birthday party and invite all the dogs. poor poor baby nona…… u also already know that i used to be completely unable to read like more than 3 lines into snow and dirty rain from richard siken’s crush without bursting into tears like a maniac that was very normal of me. average 15 year old experience
