Good Trouble 1x08 “Byte Club” Review

Good Trouble blessed us this week with another Adams-Foster family member cameo, this time from Jesus. Mariana’s twin brother stops by the loft and catches up on all the drama — or at least most of it.

During his stay, Jesus accompanies Mariana to work, where she’s busy trying to create a more women-friendly culture. Though her female fight club or, “Byte Club” as she’s named it, is awkward at first, it doesn’t take long for the women of Speckulate to realize that they need to help each other if they want to make waves.

Mariana is finally able to voice an idea during a meeting, thanks to various advice from other women in the club. However, she realizes this isn’t as big of a win as she originally thought when Jesus easily lands a contracting job building tiny houses for a man Dennis introduces him to once.

She decides to create an anonymous list of salaries of some of the women and men at the company in hopes that this will raise the issue of unequal pay for doing the same work. When she goes to Raj for help, it appears he may turn her in to Human Resources. But in a relieving turn of events, the head of HR, Angela, demands Mariana’s team to listen to her and include her in projects.

Meanwhile, Callie and Rebecca bond over their similar experiences with sexual assault. Callie learns that Rebecca was assaulted by her previous judge, Judge Handelman, who now has a new female clerk. Callie worries for the woman’s safety and urges Rebecca to speak out about her experiences with the judge, but Rebecca knows that if she does, she will be ruining the reputation of her grandfather who knew what happened and got her a new position with Judge Wilson. Frustrated, Callie decides to tell Judge Wilson about Handelman in the hopes that she will prevent his new clerk from being assaulted like Rebecca was. Unfortunately, this is right before Rebecca asks Callie not to tell anyone.

It’s not all work no play though, as things get steamy for Callie this episode when she runs into Jamie at a networking event. Now that Gael and Bryan are officially exclusive, there’s nothing holding Callie back from Jamie. The two make out in a bar bathroom just before he’s interrupted to meet with a client. It’s a brief encounter, but promising nonetheless.

Jesus also gets some action while in LA — with Rebecca. The two hit it off without much conversation about their personal lives clearly, because she and Callie are both shocked to see each other in the loft, where Jesus was just hugging his siblings goodbye.

This is definitely going to get interesting.

It was so nice to see Noah Centineo in the role of Jesus for the first time since the Fosters ended last June. It’s clear that something has been missing from Mariana’s life, and although she has Callie, I think she needed her twin brother to make her feel better about her work drama — especially since he’s not in the same situation as her or Callie, just entering the corporate workforce after graduating from college.

It was also great to see Jesus bringing up his head injury that’s been affecting him since high school. It was a nice callback to the original show, but also helpful for the audience to see that Jesus is still the same person and still carries those same struggles he did years ago in the Fosters’ timeline. Jesus is able to relate to the challenges that Mariana is facing, reminding her that though he may be treated differently as a man in the professional world, he also wasn’t able to get an education like she and Callie were due to his injury, and this often makes him compare himself to his sisters.

On another note, I’m so glad that Mariana’s “Byte Club” group is working full force now to make some positive and much needed change happen at Speckulate. Last episode, we took a break from the girls’ work lives. Now though, playtime is over for Mariana, and she’s ready to do what she must to ensure Speckulate treats all its employees equally. That way, she won’t be lying when she says she loves the culture there.

The way all the women at the company are supporting each other and giving each other ideas for how to deal with the sexism they face every day is so uplifting and I think it’s something any woman can watch and feel inspired by. This show isn’t messing around when it comes to female empowerment, and neither is Mariana.

Also, can I just say that I’m so excited for Callie and Jamie? Gael is officially committed to someone else which means Callie and Jamie can pursue each other (when they’re ready). Jamie understands Callie’s work life and her as a person in general, it seems like, and I can’t wait for them to hook up again. He may have been flirting with Rebecca at the bar, but it’s clear he only has eyes for Callie (something Gael can’t relate to).

The first season of Good Trouble is more than halfway over now, and I find myself both wanting all of the episodes now, and not wanting the season to end. Every storyline in this show is so juicy without overshining another one. How do they do it? I can’t wait to see what Mariana and Callie get up to next week, especially now that Rebecca has literally been inside the loft. There’s bound to be some secrets revealed, and we already know that the characters in this show have loose lips.

Good Trouble airs Tuesdays on Freeform at 8/7c.

Who Is Kaia Gerber & Who Are Her Friends? · Betches

Ask any normie who runs Instagram, and they’ll tell you the Kar-Jenners. And you know what? They’re totally right, but they also need to know about the newest clan taking over the ‘gram. Anyone with their finger on the pulse and on the right follow button knows that Kaia Gerber and her squad are taking over Instagram. We all know who Kaia Gerber is: she’s an up-and-coming model whose mother is supermodel Cindy Crawford and whose father made Casamigos with George Clooney (and apparently he does boring high-end business sh*t too, but let’s not pretend like I know how any of that works). She’s 16 years old and has way more going for her than any of us: perfect genetics, an endless supply of tequila, and more than two friends. But who is this friend group, exactly? Sure, they keep Shadow Hill and I.AM.GIA in business, but what else are they up to?

Presley Gerber

Presley is Kaia’s equally good-looking brother, of course! He’s an up-and-comer in the industry, just like his little sis, having modeled for big time brands such as Burberry and Calvin Klein. This mainstay at fashion week and the pages of Vogue has even been in a Pepsi commercial with mama Cindy, who was in her own iconic Pepsi commercial decades ago. It was cool and all (and much less controversial than Kendall Jenner’s Pepsi ad), but still will never be as great as Britney’s Pepsi commercials. Not much else is known about Presley, because when you’re that good-looking, you really aren’t obligated to be interesting.

Charlotte Lawrence

Charlotte is Kaia’s equally leggy, equally barely legal ride-or-die. Her dad is producer Bill Lawrence and her mom is actress Christa Miller. Her dad was a bigwig on Scrubs and Cougartown—those shows that you kiiiinda forgot about up until now—both of which her mom starred in. That means that Charlotte has clocked in a lot of time growing up around actors like Zach Braff and Courteney Cox, that actors you kiiiinda forgot up about up until now. Charlotte is pursuing the music career route, and has performed at venues such as Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn and Bowery Ballroom. She’s actually pretty great and has a promising career ahead of her.

Charlotte D’Alessio (no relation to Amber, who made out with a hot dog) is Kaia’s other bestie, because Kaia seems to love being affiliated with girls who are as lithe and brunette as she is. She is also dating Presley Gerber exclusively, which totally doesn’t sound awkward for Kaia at all. This Canadian beauty was discovered at the age of 16 at Coachella. That festival is a sh*t show of Bachelor franchise starlets and Instagram models, so the fact that she stuck out enough to get discovered as a model is a feat in and of itself.

Charlotte has a few bikini campaigns under her belt, as well as having modeled for brands like TopShop and starring as a femme fatale in some really confusing music video for some European band we’ve never heard of. (Can some film major put their worthless degree to use for once and please explain to me why there was an evil octopus in that vid?) When she’s not modeling or having good-looking sex with Presley Gerber, you can usually find her making Boomerangs where she’s slightly tilting her head and sticking out her tongue, or hosting Instagram lives, where she repeatedly answers the same questions over and over again about whether or not she got a nose job (which she denies getting because “I just know how to work my angles!” Sure, Jan) and what her workouts are like (which she claims to not even do. Again, sure, Jan).

Madison Beer was *discovered* by Justin Bieber when she was a tween for covering Etta James’ “At Last” on YouTube. She moved from Long Island to L.A. to make music, but is more known for her knockout good looks and incredible street style on Instagram. She actually only released a few singles, yet garnered over 10 million followers on Instagram with little to no legit music career. She finally released her first EP this year, As She Pleases, and it’s actually really, really good. Like, I don’t know about you, but I was expecting a girl that’s more Instagram famous than famous for, ya know, talent to drop a stinker of an EP, but “Home With You” and “Say It To My Face” are legit bops. She recently completed an American tour as well, so things are definitely starting to ramp up for Madison Beer.

I don’t even get what this kid’s deal is. Even before writing this article, I have Googled Zack Bia repeatedly to figure out what he does or what famous parents he has, and I got nothing. It honestly keeps me up at night wondering how this hypebeast twerp hangs with this crew and has accumulated the following he has. He’s dating Madison Beer, so maybe that’s where a lot of my disdain for this kid comes from, because I can’t decide if I want to be Madison Beer or date Madison Beer. Emma Delury is basically the girl next door’s little sister who hasn’t been corrupted yet, but the older quarterback of the football team plans on making a move on her once it’s no longer creepy to hook up with her. So it makes total sense that she’s modeled for the likes of Pink by Victoria’s Secret, PacSun, and Brandy Melville. Madison Beer did an interview a couple months back and was asked about her famous crew, and she took the opportunity to throw some shade—even though no one even asked! Ugh, this kind of drama is the only thing that make petty 18-year-olds tolerable. Anyways, she said some toxic chick keeps trying to swindle her way into their group to get followers and ever since, I’ve been wanting to know who it is. My money’s on Meredith Mickelson, because everyone in this group follows her except for Madison, and I don’t really know what Meredith does with her time besides take selfies while driving, take Boomerangs of herself sticking her tongue out, and taking videos of herself fake laughing.

1. What got you into the modeling industry?

What initially got me into anything remotely, modeling related, was my twin, Twiggy and I were like 14 and would just get dressed up and find props to take pictures with, for our MySpace, VampireFreaks or Piczo pages, then a few years later, I got into site modeling and that got me the following that I needed to pursue professional modeling a few years ago.

2. How do you describe you style?

I’d describe it as, if the town tramp and the grim reaper got into a fist fight in the 90s and she chokes him out with her flannel shirt until they both black out and wake up in 2019

3. Anyone you’ve looked up to in the past that got you to follow your dream?

I looked up to so many people that I still look up to. Some people, turned out to be not so great but most of the people that I looked up to, back then, I still do. For example, people like the women in 90’s Riot Grrrl bands. Their style and attitude in their music is what drew me in to work on my own empowerment and then there are people online who also inspire me like, Hot Cocoa, Cola Nash, Ashli, Razor Candi, Malice McMunn, and Jasemine Denise, just to name a few long-term icons of mine.

4. What are you planning for the new year?

My second hook suspension is a big deal to me. I’m going to be shooting a LOT more and getting into brand modeling, which is new for me. I definitely will be in more publications and websites this year. I’m trying to be all in your spooky spaces.

5. How long does a shot last for you in a day?

Some shoots are short and I’m done in an hour or two and some shoots are all day long and by the end, I’m dizzy, sore, hungry, but happy.

6. Any thing to look out for in getting the right photographer?

When I first started, I just wanted photographers who had decent pictures, and seemed cool, but that wasn’t a good method, because, yes I’ve worked with good people, but I had to compromise and water down my brand a lot, because there was so much that photographers weren’t willing to shoot. I started with fetish modeling, but even with that, they took nice photos, but they were very toned down and easier to digest because they wanted to appeal to the masses, which is not a bad thing, but that wasn’t what I necessarily wanted for MY image. I wanted to go harder with more grit in my images. I did a lot of alternative/goth modeling and I got to dress as myself, to an extent, a highly polished version of myself, because I could look “ goth” but not TOO much. Conceptual shoots were out of the question, because photographers don’t want to risk looking weird, because they have a clientele to appeal to, which I understand and respect. Also there have been very unprofessional and terrifying encounters with some photographers, so now as I’ve been modeling for a few years, I look first for model references and check if they’re blacklisted, if they have good conduct, I check to see how open minded they are and how they handle not being in full control of everything, because I’m definitely done letting other people have more control over my image, than I do. I want to be my real self and if you’re not willing to accept that, I don’t want to work with you. Obviously, if I want to work with someone specifically, I have no problem with doing what they need me to do and dressing how they envision it, but I’m not compromising with someone who reaches out to me anymore. I feel like if you came to me first, you should like me for me.

7. What’s your number one rule in meeting new people for the first time?

Aside from the obvious “ bring a friend for safety” rule, when I meet someone, I sometimes get so nervous, that I get really quiet and seem so serious, and anyone who knows me, knows that I can’t go 10 minutes without cracking a joke and I try now, to stop fearing embarrassment and learn to embrace it and to be my regular dorky self.

8. Any advice for the younger generation looking to become a professional in this industry?

Advice for the youths? Please do not try TOO hard to be taken seriously as a mature model to the point where you don’t feel comfortable or comfortable with saying no. A lot of younger models get manipulated into doing nudity, when they aren’t ready or get manipulated into having their photos sold behind their backs if they do feel comfortable with nudity.

9. What do you look for in a makeup artist? Personally I do my own makeup or my best friend,Dwella does it because people act like working on dark skin is as hard as quantum physics.

10. Any other models you looking to colab with this year?

Yes. I want to collaborate with Izzy Vile, Coral Johnson, and Cola Nash, Shelly D’ Inferno

A mom passes by and grabs my 3-year-old cousin, takes the 6-year-old, and goes to a manager. My aunt had to come down and tell them that I was watching them. It even goes as far as shaming the dude saying he ruined his life. Made me sick. All it did was promote male victims to want to hide even more.

It’s probably way too late for this to get any attention but I am a male victim of sexual abuse.

I was first sexually abused when I was four years old. It was swept under the rug because the 25-year-old that did it to me was going through some things and didn’t know any better.

Fast-forward to when I’m 9 and I was sexually abused every Friday for over a year and a half. I was told by my abuser that if I let anyone know, it would be my fault and I would get in trouble. One day I finally told, just wanting it to end even if I got in trouble. What happened? Both me (9) and my female abuser (23) were given a stern talking to. That was it. She went on to live her life. I never saw her again.

Every Friday I was locked in a room and bound. I would be left in the dark while I would have her perform oral (attempted since I was 9 and unable of getting an erection). She would pump me full of fluids and when I had to go to the bathroom she’d have me pee on her. At times she would pee into a cup and try to force me to drink it. If I was being more cooperative than usual she would untie my hands and have me touch her. At the end of every, I dunno what to call itsession?she would tell me that if I told anyone I would be taken from my parents. Even if they didn’t take me from my parents her dad who was a bad man would kill my mom and my sisters.

That is until I was 15 and made a Facebook. She found me on there and would leave comments like look who grew up sexy and stuff like that. I reached out to the adults in my life and they told me to ignore it, which I did. But they told me I was a guy and I could handle it. It’s not something that keeps me awake at night. But in order to get over it I had to harden myself because I’m a guy and guys can’t get raped.

On a previous reddit account I went to open up on a victims of sexual abuse page. I wrote out a multi-page post just getting it out there. The only replies I got were about how I was a guy and I didn’t know what it was like to be violated as a woman. I was harassed for weeks by women on there for trying to compare my experience to theirs.

I’m a big guy, I shave my head and grow a beard, most people think I’m intimidating.

Truly I’m timid at heart, I know how to box but have always found a way around confrontation.

I had a girlfriend that got crazy violent when she was mad, knives, tazers, guns, frequently got involved. I hit her a lot in self defense (we were together for 3 years it definitely played into my low self esteem, i loved to hate it) and it completely ruined my psyche. I think of myself as a woman beater, as a misogynist now just knowing that I’m capable of it.

Just the idea that I can hit a woman has driven me to some of my darkest depths and even now typing it I dont feel justified in my actions despite the fact I was protecting my own life.

One night she came at me with a tazer from behind she started it early and I had enough time to move, she tripped and stunned herself, screaming in pain, bruised her forehead hitting it against the floor. Neighbors heard and called the cops and she gave a false statement. Of course looking the way I do it didn’t matter what I said, I spent a night in holding before she dropped the charges and got me out. I guess I’m just thankful she “loved” me enough not to let me get charged with that shit.

It’s made me scared about new relationships because I’m afraid someone can just tell a cop whatever they want and I’ll get fucked.

I’m a stay-at-home father because I’m taking care of my wife and I’s 2 year old son. My wife’s got a career that’s promising advancement and she works sometimes 12 hour days. Turns out, she spent 25 years in prison because in 1985, she and a handful of other people kidnapped a 60-year-old man, tried to ransom him for $435,000, tortured him for three weeks (Hylton personally sodomized him with a metal rod), strangled him, and stuffed his body into a chest to decompose.

I can’t help but wonder how a man with an equivalent record would be received at the same event.

Domestic Violence. I just got out of an abusive relationship two weeks ago and I’m shocked at how hard it was for me to talk about it and get taken seriously with my peers. She was so mean and I’m the exact opposite these days. Only today have I felt validated for everything when I happened upon a counselor on another thread. I feel terrible about myself still and apparently that’s normal. I’m 6’4″ and a professional bouncer/bodyguard but let me tell you. Men can be abused just as easily as women. I have to say that the standard of what is acceptable on social media. If a female Instagram profile is full of 400 attractive selfies, people are not as critical of the narcissistic side of the pictures as much as they would if it were a guy. Not that I would want to post 400 selfies, but constantly posting pictures of yourself in specific poses isn’t a form of modeling or self-love as much as it is an expression of narcissism.

That’s more scarring to the man than it is to the womanat least people take the woman’s word for it.

The biggest double standard to me is ‘saving the women and children first.’ Why does a man’s life suddenly have less value in these sorts of situations?
