A/N: That Hyundai ad hit different. *chuckles*
Words: 3097 Warnings: kidnapping, hostage
New York smelled pretty bad, come to think of it. You had almost forgotten the hustle and bustle of this huge city that never slept and if there was one thing you had not been missing at all after spending a few months in Morocco for work, it was the constant traffic jams.
It was hot, unbearably so. You’d been a sweating mess ever since your cab driver had picked you up at the airport and the fact that the air conditioning in the cab was broken didn’t exactly help with that. Your thighs stuck to the leather of the backseat, your forehead glistening and your make-up… well, it used to be make-up.
The cab driver seemed nice, at least and since the long snake made entirely of cars had not moved for at least an hour now, he had offered to park on the side of the road and get you both a bottle of water. Ironically, you were only a few yards away from Stark Tower.
Perhaps you shouldn’t complain about the traffic jam. Half of the city was a mess after the atrocious battle you had been fortunate enough only to have witnessed on the news on the plane. You could only hope that your tiny studio flat was still intact and quite frankly, it was short of a miracle that a cab service had actually agreed on picking you up so shortly after an almost-war—not to mention that the plane had actually landed.
You sighed, brushing a strand of hair sticking to your cheek out of your face. You were unbelievably tired—even more so knowing that you had dodged a catastrophe that would go down in history all thanks to work. Your eyes fell shut and you leaned against the car window when suddenly, the driver’s door was all but yanked open and someone who certainly did not resemble your cab driver, started the car and clutched at the steering wheel as if his life depended on it.
Your lips parted. Shackles and a muzzle, along with a blue glowing cube landed on the passenger seat with a loud clatter, followed by an annoyed groan. It was him. The man who had attempted to take over the entire planet only moments ago, he was here in this car and he was currently kidnapping you with it.
A scream escaped your lips, a mixture of shock and fear spreading in your body and fuelling the rising amount of adrenaline. It was only then the God of Mischief glanced at the rear-view mirror and spotted you there panicking—but by then, he had already stirred the car back on the road, straight towards the traffic jam.
“You… you are… Let me out! Let me out at once!” You screeched, the heat around you—along with your miserable appearance—all but forgotten. Loki rolled his eyes. Great. Another mortal.
“I am not stopping this car,” was all he said. Your eyes widened in utter shock.
“Then don’t! Fuck!” Danger was radiating off of this man like heat from an active volcano; so if necessary, you would jump out of the moving car as well. Biting your lower lip and wondering if you should go through with this risky stunt at the speed he was going, the wheels squeaking over the asphalt with every abrupt turn he took, or if that would be a suicide mission. It was probably the latter, and when you reached for the handle of the back door, it took the God of Mischief only a mere second to lock it, trapping you inside.
“Let me out! Let me out!”
“You’ll kill yourself.” Loki spat. You did not miss the patronising tone in his voice—stupid. He believed you stupid.
“And if I stay in here with you I won’t?” You retorted hysterically. And it was justified, really—for when your gaze drifted back to the road ahead of you, you could see him racing straight towards a long line of cars waiting for the traffic to clear up.
“Watch out! The other cars, watch out! Oh my God…” You screamed, squeezing your eyes shut and covering your face with your arms but the imminent crash never came. When you opened your eyes again, Loki had all but moved through the other cars as if by magic. God, what was this, Harry Potter?
With your heart in your mouth, you brought your trembling hands to your thighs and pressed down on them in a desperate attempt to fight off the panic attack rising within you like the forthcoming eruption of a volcano.
But even when you reached the suburbs, ironically moved closer to your home, and the car finally slowed down to a reasonable speed, making you wonder how a god from another realm knew how to drive a car in the first place, your dread kept growing steadily. What would happen once Loki decided he had reached his destination? What would he do with you? Would you end up as another casualty? You’d know where he was, after all, and only God knew how he had managed to escape after the Avengers reported his capture—not to mention that he was in the possession of that mysterious blue cube you were certain bore even more chaos and destruction in the wrong hands.
“I take it this vehicle is supposed to be a means of transport in exchange for payment?” He suddenly said.
“What?” You gaped at him, swallowing. “Yes! I mean, yes, it’s a taxi. That’s… I was…”
“Where do you live?”
“Excuse me? What, are you going to drop me off and expect me to tip you?”
Loki smirked. He couldn’t quite put his finger on why but he did like your feistiness. “I need a place to hide.”
“What… no! No! I am not giving shelter to a criminal!” You snarled, swallowing your fear of him—and then you made the mistake of peeking at the navigation system the taxi driver had set up next to the steering wheel, with your address on bright display to show Loki exactly where he’d have to go.
The God of Mischief tilted his head. “You don’t have much choice in the matter, my dear.”
You took a deep shaky breath, digging your nails into the backseat. If your lower lip was trembling, you didn’t notice. “P-please… please just let me go. I promise I won’t tell anyone where you are or where you went. Please.”
“I am not going to kill you if that is what you are worried about.” He replied after a long pause. When you said nothing, too stunned and scared to come up with another snarky comment, silence spread in the car like wildfire.
Hugging your knees to your chest, you closed your eyes, hoping that this was a bad joke, a terrible nightmare and any moment now, you would wake up safely on the plane, yet to land in half-destroyed New York City—but the end of slumber never came. You were wide awake; even more so when, after what felt like hours, Loki finally stopped the car. Of course, you had not noticed him observing you repeatedly through the rear-view mirror, almost as if to check if you were still alive.
Your eyes met and then, finally, he unlocked the doors. Only now, you did not move an inch. You had no idea what to expect if you stepped out of this car.
Naturally, Loki disagreed with your cautious decision. He yanked the car door open when he saw you frozen in place, grabbing your upper arm so fast you didn’t even have a chance to react, and all of a sudden, seeing the entrance door of the apartment building you lived in did not at all look as appealing as it had at the airport anymore.
His grip around your arm was firm but when you whined in pain, the God of Mischief actually softened it—if only a little, barely noticeable.
“Unlock the door, my dear, will you?” He inquired, smiling sweetly at you. Right beneath the surface, you could hear that there would be dire consequences if you failed to comply.
Surely at this point, he could hear your rapid heartbeat. Shaking, you fumbled for the keys in your bag until they were jingling in your palms all the while Loki watched you like a hawk. You had dismissed calling the police on your phone in the car already—for now.
Fuck, you had been kidnapped. You were about to be held hostage in your own flat, or… or… was he just going to enter and kick you out? Had he been lying about not killing you? Would he fling a dagger at you any moment now like you had seen him do on TV?
Loki followed you when you approached the door and unlocked it clumsily. One floor up and to the left. For just a brief moment, you wondered what would happen if you started screaming bloody murder, alerting your neighbours but even when you opened your mouth to attempt it, not a single sound would escape your lips.
Even a little further out and farther away from the centre of New York City, rent prices were horrendous. Your salary was not bad but your apartment was no more than a small studio equipped with a humble kitchen, a separate bathroom with a tiny shower and lastly, your double bed in the centre of the room, posing as your sofa during the day.
Loki looked around unimpressed when he entered. “Well… it will do.”
“N-now what?” You choked out.
Loki raised his eyebrows, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “Pretend I’m not even here.”
Right—because that was going to be so easy. He sighed and rolled his eyes when you only stared at him in horror.
“You don’t trust me, do you?”
“W-would you? You tried to subjugate our planet like ten minutes ago!”
“And for good reason too. This realm is lawless, your people slaughter each other day in and out and you feel threatened by me? I would have given you a new purpose.”
He had a point… but… “And what is that so-called purpose? Slavery?” Loki’s expression darkened, making you flinch back.
“S-sorry… I’ll… I’ll be i-in the bathroom taking a shower. Please just… I mean… whatever.” Would he stop you? Hesitating, you made your way to the bathroom, waiting for him to yank you back, press you against the wall and threaten you? Threaten you with what, exactly? Could you trust that he wouldn’t kill you? Loki felt like a ticking time bomb in your flat.
But a painful yank never came and when you locked the bathroom door behind you, you exhaled. Inhaled, exhaled, inhaled, exhaled, trying to process the fact you had a war criminal in your home.
Once you had gathered enough energy to do what you had come to the bathroom for and, an hour later, returned to the main room, Loki was sitting on your bed cross-legged, the Tesseract right before him, glowing away.
“I roamed your ‘kitchen’”, he said without glancing up to meet your eyes, “Do you have anything edible at all?”
“I was away for a whole month.” You argued. “I haven’t done any shopping yet because I was kidnapped by a space Viking.”
Loki smirked. Amused, he finally looked up. “Well, perhaps I should take you back to Asgard with me then. I could use a diligent little servant.”
Your reaction did not disappoint him. Chuckling to himself, he slid off the bed more elegantly than you could ever muster, the Tesseract disappearing into nothingness.
“What I am trying to say is that even gods need to eat and I am, quite frankly, starving.”
“That sounds like a you-problem.” You grumbled. And then, as if on cue, your stomach growled. Damn it.
“Fine. I’ll order some pizza.”
-
Loki had all but watched you like a hawk upon calling the local pizza place. Everything inside of you had screamed to let them know about your predicament, to beg them to call the police and send them to you instead of the pizza.
But as soon as the food was delivered, the mood in your apartment changed so rapidly it left you wondering if the only reason for Loki’s world domination attempt had been his hunger. The man devoured a family-sized pizza in but what felt like two minutes and, upon realising you were done with yours, leaving three pieces in the box, he devoured those as well. And never before had you seen someone eat pizza so gracefully.
It didn’t exactly make it feel like you had been kidnapped anymore. Perhaps… perhaps he hadn’t been lying about not wanting to kill you after all. Perhaps he wasn’t as evil as you… no, stop. He had literally just tried to take over the planet!
“What are you pondering on, little mortal?”
You shivered, the nickname affecting you in a way it truly shouldn’t, especially after he had lost his armour and magically exchanged it for more casual clothes—they still looked like they were from a different time period altogether but it wasn’t nearly as intimidating as before.
“W-why did you really do it?” You found yourself asking. It was a risk—but you were feeling braver now that your stomach was full even though part of you was surprised you had managed to eat at all.
“What?”
“Why did you really try to take over the planet? Did you… do you really want to enslave us all?”
“A lack of freedom does not equal slavery. It offers protection from failure and bad choices.” He said. You frowned.
“You truly believe that?”
“You fight wars over opinions, religions and race among your own species. Your choices are suffocating the whole of Midgard. I would have changed that.”
“You can’t be serious.”
You looked down, reaching for the sweet treat that had come with your pizza to stop your fingers from trembling.
“What is that?”
“Oh, uh… those are marshmallows. This pizza place always packs them with your order, don’t ask me why.”
“What’s that?” He repeated, frowning at the plastic wrapper.
“It’s candy…”
“Well, it doesn’t look very natural.”
Woah. How had this conversation just gone from “humans should not have freedom of choice” to “marshmallows look unhealthy”?
“They’re… I mean they’re not. They’re made of pure sugar and artificial flavouring.”
“Then why do you eat them?”
“Because… because they taste good?”
Loki gave you a taunting look. See? It said. This is what I meant.
But when you opened the package and handed it to him, he took one out nonetheless. It looked tiny between his long fingers—as tiny as you must have looked next to him.
You gulped when it disappeared between his lips. When you reached out to take the package back, he snatched it away from you.
“They are quite delicious, actually.” Your jaw dropped when he popped them all into his mouth at once, winking at you. Not quite sure how to react to this, you averted your gaze, taking a feigned interest in your digital alarm clock on the nightstand instead.
It was only 5 PM but you were positively ready to pass out. Where would you even sleep tonight? Where would he sleep? Would he even sleep?
“You are tired.” He suddenly stated as if on cue. He couldn’t read your mind… right? He did have that weird cube of his, after all.
“Well, yeah… I got kidnapped, experienced a live remake of ‘Fast and Furious’ and I have a criminal in my flat.”
“I only understood half of what you just said but I can ensure you that I will not harm you when you sleep.” There it was again, that frown that almost made it look like he was offended. As if the very circumstance of him hurting an innocent for no reason other than malice insulted him.
“So by all means, retire to bed.” He went on, gesturing to the bed and eventually, standing up to make space for you. The pizza boxes disappeared in but a green shimmer of light and you watched Loki, albeit still suspicious, heading over to the small kitchen table. To be quite frank, it was the last thing you remembered.
-
Loki was gone, no trace of him left. It was as if he had never even been here. It was already past noon—the exhaustion from your flight as well as the racy car drive and last but not least, your shining time as a hostage had worn you out to the point you didn’t even remember falling asleep anymore.
You only realised now that it was your doorbell that had woken you up. Jumping out of bed and moaning when your vision turned black for a moment, you headed over to your speaker and pressed the button. Perhaps it was Loki. Perhaps he had locked himself out but then again… would he not be able to magic himself back in? Why had he insisted on you unlocking the door yesterday in the first place? You shook your head.
“Hello?”
“Hi. This is Henry, I’ve got your delivery.” A boyish voice responded.
“W-what delivery? I didn’t order anything.”
“You did, ma’am, would you come open the door, please?”
You sighed. “Fine, I’ll be down in a second.”
You had fallen asleep in your clothes from last night, so one quick glance in the mirror was all you had before you headed back down and opened the main entrance door.
The delivery boy was holding both your suitcase and a jumbo-size package of marshmallows in his hands. Big marshmallows—the bonfire kind, to be precise.
“Who…” But you knew. You knew the moment you made the connection and knew the moment you looked straight into Henry’s eyes and noticed them glowing unnaturally blue when he handed the items to you.
It had not been a dream then. Loki had really been here. You had been eating pizza with the God of Mischief and now… the gesture was almost sweet. Was that his way of saying thank you? For what? You hadn’t exactly done much except for trembling in fear.
“He instructed me to tell you that you will meet again soon.” Henry announced and then, before you even had a chance to respond, he turned on his heel, hopped back into the delivery van parked in front of the building and left. You only realised now that the Hyundai taxi was gone too.

Hey! I’m dying for more Daxton. I seriously can’t wait for season 2. Can you write something about Nalini realizing Paxton is good for Devi? Like he takes care of her/protects her and helps her deal with her trauma
Thanks!!
Hi!
omg let me say first, anon, thank you for this ask. youre the first person to take me up on my offer to write stuff for you so thank you again.
A little bit about this writing piece before I actually show it to you, there was a point when I was writing it when I wasn’t sure if it was going to reach 1K words but there was a point where the words just start to flow and I can proudly say it is 2.1K and that is not a lot but based on what I thought it was going to end up being it has come along way. and this is one of my first-ish never have I ever work of writing. I think it’s the first I’ve written entirely off the top of my head. My other ones are either not posted or it’s my work inspired by the episodes and its just everything through Paxton‘s point of view so it’s a bit different.
this is getting sort of long so anyway, without further ado. here it is. I hope you enjoy it, please let me know what you think and if you like it please feel free to send me another!
Nalini had just about had it. The day’s raging dumpster fire began with traffic that resulted in her being late to work. If that wasn’t bad enough, a patient she saw a couple days ago came back complaining that her treatment caused a breakout. After a follow-up, she discovered the patient hadn’t changed any of their habits despite her advice! So was it really the treatment, or the fact that they don’t wash their face? All that suffices to say when Nalini got home she was already on a very short fuse. Kamala was out for school and let her family know she wouldn’t be home for dinner so it was known by both Devi and Nalini that they would be cooking without her today. Nalini gave Devi specific instructions so that, regardless of how late her day ran, they could have dinner at a reasonable time. Devi did not follow those instructions. Nalini came home to the door unlocked, closed but unlocked, the house a mess, and Devi’s part of dinner not made. No matter how many breaths she took, Nalini was mad. No, mad didn’t quite cover it. She silently walked up the stairs, hell-bent on seeing what caused this disaster, and if she didn’t like the reason she planned to riff for the rest of the night. But approaching Devi’s door she found it ajar. She peeked inside, and that's where she found them.
After winning his swim meet, Paxton was on top of the world. The school day had been what it tended to be, light. Filled with class and hanging with his friends in the hotpocket. But that was hours ago. It was early evening when he saw her, Devi Vishwakumar, they had sort of become friends over recent weeks but given the up and down nature of their relationship, Paxton was always very aware of her. Devi had a way of grabbing Paxton’s attention. He was always trying to figure her out. Of course she made a hell of a first impression, first couple of impressions actually. Devi was sorely different from anyone else in his circle and Paxton wasn’t yet sure how he felt about the sudden invasion. He pretended he didn’t but after unintentionally watching her Paxton began to notice Devi’s change in mood sometimes. Like right now, from where Paxton was he saw the set of her shoulders. The tension was apparent as Devi stalked across the school grounds. Confusion flooded Paxton’s mind and before another thought could register, he was jogging towards her.
“ Hey, Vishwakumar, wait up! ” He called towards her but she didn’t stop
Devi cast a look over her shoulder, her voice was muffled when she spoke, “Uh, Hi Paxton, I can’t talk.” her voice cracks, “I’m in a bit of a rush.”
Paxton slows down for a second as he takes in the situation, Devi speeds up.
“Are you okay?”
Devi breaks into a dead sprint and Paxton doesn’t think, he just follows.
Devi was doing okay. Today was harder than most for a reason she couldn’t name but Devi was making it through. That was until last period art class. The teacher gave a simple assignment, and that was to paint your happiest memory. Immediately when the words left his mouth, a memory came flooding into Devi's mind like a tidal wave.
Devi was 8 when her father convinced her mother that going to a Californian beach as a family would be an adventure. Devi barely remembers the build-up, it was a haze of packing sandwiches and equipment. Leaving the house, only to discover something had been forgotten. A car ride that seemed to stretch into forever. But the beach was magnificent. At least it was in Devi’s memory. It was a gloomy day, the threat of rain looming, so the beach’s visitors were far and few in between. Devi remembers that feeling of warm sand under her feet. She remembers those first fragile steps into the tide, only to rush back as the ocean crashed forward chasing her back to shore. She could see her mom, in the distance, setting up their makeshift camp for the day. She was more content watching her family than participating. The ocean was vast and blue and terrifying. Devi could not urge herself to take more than a few steps. Devi doesn’t know how her dad saw her distress but it was like he could read her mind. He grabbed her and lifted her high then settled Devi on his shoulders. He insisted that she was safe there, she was too high for the ocean to ever reach. He held her hand as he walked slowly but confidently further into the waves. He stopped just as the water kissed her mid-calf but it was enough. From way up here, with her father by her side, the ocean wasn’t anything to fear, it was something to marvel at.
Devi had a firm picture in her mind of her happiest memory and it was her family’s adventure at the beach. But Devi couldn’t make a move to make this image a reality. Sadness crept up on her and got a vice grip on her heart. Her vision blurred and she couldn’t breathe. How had she ever breathed before? Was it always this hard? The bell rang, signaling the end of the day but Devi was on autopilot. Eleanor and Fabiola felt miles away, whenever they’d focus in the daze of her mind, the grip on her heart tightened and dragged her back to darkness. Devi doesn’t know if she said goodbye to her best friends,
She blinked, band began
She inhaled, band was over
She stood, the sun was setting
She gazed, the stress stiffened her movements as she walked around campus. Where was she headed?
Devi was desperate for light, for clarity.
“ Hey, Vishwakumar, wait up! ” The sudden noise broke the muddle, if only for now, she was again aware of the devastation and loss weighing on her mind and on her heart.
She recognized that voice and it was getting closer, she glanced over her shoulder. Paxton, no no no, she didn’t want anyone to see this least of all her newest and most popular friend, “Uh, Hi Paxton, I can’t talk.” Why was her voice cracking? “I’m in a bit of a rush.”
Devi finally knew where she wanted to go as she increased her speed.
“Are you okay?” Paxton’s question was the final straw, she couldn’t stop her tears and they fell uncontrollably past her cheeks. Paxton was going to catch up, and Devi was crumbling by the second. So Devi did the only thing she could. She ran, ignoring the echo of the beating steps behind her.
Nalini could hardly comprehend the scene playing in front of her. Devi, her only child, her entire world, looked so small folded up on the floor in front of her bed. Devi was always so strong, with a personality larger than life. She always seemed bigger than her stature, always taking up more space. Nalini's anger from the day deflates, leaving no trace it was ever there to begin with. Nalini tears her eyes away from the form of her daughter to take in the room. It was dark but the other figure inhabiting the room was clear as day. Paxton sat before Devi, his body language soft. He had one hand on the arms Devi wrapped around herself as he spoke to her gently. Paxton’s volume was soft as a whisper, any louder would shatter the delicate atmosphere. Witnessing this scene felt like a secret and the longer Nalini stood there the guiltier she felt. Devi never expressed emotions this deeply to her. Everyday problems with her friends or tests or Ben Gross, yes. But Devi never shared this.
Nalini's mind was going a million miles an hour as he crept back down the steps and began cooking dinner. She knew Devi would refuse but she needed to have something ready, just in case. When everything was mostly done, she was quiet as she moved around the kitchen, putting the finishing touches on the meal. Nalini knew he was trying to walk silently but she still caught Paxton as he descended the steps. Nalini kept her back to him as she called, giving Paxton an out if he needed.
“Paxton?”
“Um...yes, Hi Mrs. Vishwakumar” at the acknowledgment, Nalini felt comfortable enough to turn around.
Paxton was standing in the doorway, shuffling in obvious discomfort. What he expected her to say she didn’t know. Gods, neither did Nalini. Questions flew through her mind faster than she could catch them. She didn’t want to ask him about what happened, Nalini wanted Devi to share when, if, she was ready. Nalini realized, amongst these questions, that she didn’t know Paxton. Here was this kid, late in the evening comforting her daughter. She couldn’t even be upset that they were home alone when she recalled how broken Devi looked. All Nalini had done thus far was judge Paxton, he looked like a jock so she thought him dumb. She made these assumptions about him, that he’d peak in high school or that he was shallow or that he was a walking STI, but they were just that. Assumptions. This kid stayed with her daughter for she didn’t even know how long, she’d been cooking for close to an hour so it was at least that.
All these guesses and judgments were useless when she stood in front of him. Paxton had a rigid set to his limbs, Nalini thought it was probably from sitting in one position for so long, and he was still dressed in gym clothes. Paxton looked new in Nalini’s eyes and she regretted never wanting to know him before now. Nalini didn’t know where to begin, she wondered if he’d eaten.
“Would you like something to eat?” Nalini's silent prayer must’ve been heard because he accepted. She was being given another chance. She quickly worked around the familiar space, grabbing one of the good containers and piling more food than necessary, successfully straining the unyielding plastic. She was handing the meal over when she paused, they both had a hand on the object between them but Nalini couldn’t let go, not yet.
“Thank you, Paxton, really, I don’t know what happened and I won’t ask but I saw what you did for Devi.” Paxton had the decency to look a little shocked. He hadn’t heard anything. Paxton was too absorbed before. His mind was a broken record repeating only, Devi.
The moment shatters when the front door opened, “I’m home!” Kamala’s voice fills the silent home. With the trance broken, Nalini’s hold on the container falters and she drops her hand allowing Paxton to leave. Words were failing him so all Paxton could give was a tightlipped smile in response.
“Thanks for the dinner.” Paxton’s smile was looser now and that gave Nalini courage.
Kamala was unloaded the day around her but Nalini was focused on making this right, “You’re welcome to come by Paxton, anytime.” She could only hope Paxton knew just how much she meant those words. His smile was burdened but bright, he nodded strongly and then he was out the door.
Kamala was fixing the table for a very late dinner when she called for Devi to join, Nalini hoped she would. “Who was that? And why was he here so late?” Pure curiosity laced Kamala’s voice.
“Paxton is one of Devi’s friends. He’s a good kid.”
Those details were all she could provide before Devi came bouncing down the steps. Nalini couldn’t be sure if it was the fact of what she saw or reality but Devi’s movements looked heavier than they normally were.
“What’s up guys?” Devi’s voice feigned casualness, “Dang mom, isn’t it late for a thousand-course meal?” She questioned as she took in the lack of clear surfaces on the dinner table.
Nalini just brushed it off, indicating for everyone to take a seat. “So how was everyone’s day?”
Nalini wasn’t looking for Devi to share but this was her family. She would always want to hear how they were, plus it was tradition. As they consumed insane amounts of food they were bound to regret eating this late at night, everything felt so normal and easy. But something had shifted in Nalini today and even though it was new and she was scared to death of this person entering Devi’s life with the propensity to hurt her. Nalini can’t say she minded too much because it was Paxton. He had proven himself worthy of a chance, and Nalini wouldn’t soon forget it.

in the midnight hour
Kaoru x angst // ft. Hikaru
He had come to realize that death was not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live.
11:50pm
It was the inevitable, the inevitable that dared to stare straight through his hazel orbs, hopelessness consuming his entire being as he hesitantly peered straight back at the clock from across the room. Across the bare, empty hospital room, pale vacant walls seeming to lack any warmth at all. Swiftly positioning his chair closer to his twin, an uncomfortable one to say the least, a longing gaze of anguish clouded his thoughts as he gaped at the ever so still body laying in front of him. In a bed that was certainly too small for the both of them, one without warmth, one placed to simply fill an eerie void that crept throughout that hollow space.
His world had slowly stopped turning a year ago, yet for some reason, the universe had shown no mercy. It kept on turning, against his will, the clock refusing to stop the relentless countdown he had dreaded witnessing come full term. His entire essence was drowning in a pit of sorrow and despair, gasping for just a single breath of air that had yet to surface. That very well may never surface again.
I’m drowning.
Eyes fixated on the clock, he steadily shifted his attention towards the frighteningly stiff body beside him, the support of a pretentious machine having been the only thing keeping this beautiful soul from joining the divine stars above. The stars that illuminated the night sky, even on the darkest of nights.
Yes, I’m certain. This is what it feels like, to be pulled under by waves, waves that disguise themselves as water.
He hazily watched as his brothers chest slowly rose, the ventilator having been the only reason for such an occurrence, hot briny tears blurring his vision. Tears that demanded to cascade down his face, but he wouldn’t give them that satisfaction, not yet. It wasn’t the time, there were still 10 minutes. 10 unbearable, horrific, scrutinizingly painful minutes to come.
And just as slowly as his chest rose, it sank. Sank back down into the lifeless position it was in. Oh what a repetitively numbing process it was. Watching his other half lay there, his chest continuing on with such an agonizing process right before his eyes, subconsciously pleading to be saved.
This sea that I’m drowning in is not made of water. No, it’s made of something much worse.
But there was nothing he could do. A gut wrenching statement that sent shivers down his spine every time he had been forced to come to terms with it. He was his brothers rock, his safe space, his protector. He was supposed to be able to save him from situations like this, to hold him and tell him that it would be alright, to comfort him with a reassuring smile that would prove he’d surely be able to fix everything. To wrap him in his all-accepting arms, hold him close to his chest, silently lacing his fingers through his brothers ash brown hair as he welcomed the tears that would soon stain his pale skin. To soothe him with a tiny hum, one barely audible, although having a tendency to bring solace to his brothers aching heart. But this was different. All he could do now was wait for the inevitable.
It’s a sea of darkness— crashing waves of hopelessness and despair. And no matter how fast I swim, the dark flood that never hesitates to suffocate me always manages to pull me back in.
He carefully raised his hand to caress their cheek, softly running his fingertips across his bare skin, delicately grazing it as if it were porcelain. A sigh escaped his lips, lovingly admiring the face that had brought so much pleasure to his lonely world. So much comfort to his worries, something that had a tendency to consume him, so much liveliness to such a dull place. A person who had shown him that this life could hold so much more meaning to it if they had walked through it together, hand in hand, as the independent beings that they were. Someone who had finally made him realize that they would never truly find themselves all alone in this world; they would always have each other.
11:55pm
That had all changed one fateful night a year ago, exactly one year ago, this horrid day marking the anniversary of his brothers accident. Memories of an interrupted classroom came flooding back, the sudden chiming of his phone, having almost ignored the call due to the annoyance that had consumed him after disrupting the others around him. He could remember the pure terror that had managed to take over his body as the news was relayed, how his body trembled beneath him, how his breathing seemed to hitch. How insane he must have looked as he stormed out of that room, leaving all of his belongings behind.
Although the most vivid memory having been witnessing his brothers bruised and broken body lay directly in front of him, stretched out along a gurney. He had never seen such a large amount of blood before, at least not in person. The scars that had tainted his body, the wounds that would stop his heart. Not once had he ever pondered the thought of Hikaru’s absence in his life, not once did he believe a car accident would be the cause of such a tragedy.
But just like that, as quick as the snap of ones fingers, all of their plans had completely shattered. Their future together now ceased to exist. It’s almost as if the world were taunting him, attempting to see just how far it were able to push him until his breaking point had been reached. The world had a funny little way of testing people like that, and he detested it.
Hikaru, can you hear me?
A dreadful expression illuminated his face as a voice echoed behind him, the sound of a nurse anxiously reminding him that it was almost midnight. He snapped his head in their direction, eyes widening in such a way that pleaded for just a little more time. He was already well aware that once 12am hit, he’d have to give them permission to pull the plug. To stop the titillating machine that effortlessly gave life to his brothers body, to watch the dearest person to his heart fade away before his very eyes. He knew that, as he had already agreed to such a request a year ago.
And yet a single tear had still managed to escape his glistening eyes, not bearing the strength to hold in such threatening emotions any longer, fists clenching as the realization finally began to sink in. The agony, the relentless pain that demanded to be felt, was too excruciating to withstand. His hand reached out to interlock with his twins still hand, the other gliding over the front pieces of their silky hair, pushing the ends back ever so gently to plant a small kiss on his temple.
Hikaru, please don’t be scared.
Clacking footsteps along the icy tile floor came flooding in, drowning out the soft breaths of his adoring twin beside him. Breaths he had been attentively concentrating on until now, almost as if to ensure they were still there. His grip on Hikaru’s hand tightened, squeezing it to subconsciously assure his brother he wouldn’t dare leave his side during a moment like this. That he would wait until the very last breath left his body.
Everything will be alright. Soon enough, I promise, your suffering will come to an end.
A hand rested on his shoulders, stiff to the touch, but he couldn’t turn to meet their gaze. He couldn’t bare to tear his eyes away from his brothers small frame for even a second, his last moments of life ticking like a time bomb. But this wasn’t life, this wasnt living. Remaining on life support for this amount of time was long enough; maybe it was a bit selfish, but he had wanted just a little more time with his other half. He hadn’t wanted to let go, not yet, as he had hoped for a miracle that insisted on never showing. Body trembling, he gently slid the hand not occupied by Hikaru’s across his chest, placing it directly above his brothers heart. His face scrunched, lips quivering, every bone in his body aching to the touch. Restraining the tears that were bound to descend at any moment, he shifted his attention from his brother only for a moment, begrudgingly giving a slight nod to the nurse beside him.
12am
Their dainty fingertips glided across the machine, pity devouring their sorrowful eyes as they met his, reluctantly shutting off the monitor that had kept Hikaru in arms reach for so long. And he froze, a wide-eyed gape transcending across his face, hairs rising along every inch of his body. A pit of utter denial forming in his gut, heart pounding at an exponential rate. As of right now, his brother was dying. There was nothing left preventing him from the inevitable, as this was it.
Repetitive beeping echoed throughout the now vacant room, both twins now having been the only ones left. The ringing of the monitor kept an undeviating pace, although steadily slowing down every so often. His head rested above Hikaru’s, temple to temple, hand in hand.
Do you remember that poem I had once read to you?
He breathily inhaled, keeping his hand firmly placed over Hikaru’s heart, listening as the monitor slowed after each passing minute. And as if following suit, so did his heart. Eyes firmly closed to listen to his slowing heartbeat, head still rested against Hikaru’s, he exhaled once more. Such a simple process, one that he had taken for granted until now. A process his brother no longer had the pleasure of taking part in.
This feeling, he couldn’t fully grasp it— why he couldn’t save him. The answer to that question eluded him, the world around him too surreal to fully comprehend at a time like this.
That poem, Hikaru, it reminded me of you.
And then, there was silence. Nothing capable of describing the absence of emotions he felt in that very moment, a lifetime of words waiting to be said had disappeared. For a split second, the world stood still. And with the bulge in his throat growing, two souls that had been intertwined since birth had finally begun to part, almost as if he could subconsciously sense his brothers hand pulling away from his as he sauntered towards the light.
He smiled into his brothers face as the monitor flatlined, hand clenching his twins gown as he felt his heart beat its last pulse, the tears he had held back for so long finally tumbling down his flushed cheeks directly onto his brothers. Lifting his head from his ashy haired twin, he gently repositioned it to rest against the crook of his neck, gently wrapping his quivering arms around him. A silent surge of uneven sobs had begun to escape his lips, unable to deter these overflowing feelings of despair any longer. Uncontrollable, unwavering sobs, almost as if he were a child once more.
He clung to his brothers lifeless frame, not a word capable of escaping his lips, his sorrowful weeps drowning out any efforts. Uncontrollably shaking, not a single breath able to be caught, eyes swelling up with each passing second. This time, there would be no efforts to resuscitate him. This was it, the inevitable.
When he shall die,
Take him and cut him out in little stars,
And he will make the face of heaven so fine
That all the world will be in love with night
And pay no worship to the garish sun

Part 11
Home.
You are home. It’s supposed to be home.
But it wasn’t. To you, it couldn’t be.
This place feels too far from home, too foreign. You had no memories of it, no recollection of the safety and security it offers. Not even the faintest remembrance of the laughter, smiles, and tears; the fondness and the sadness these four walls have witnessed over the years.
You can’t call it home. You don’t know where home is, and you’re not sure you have one anymore.
Not after leaving him behind.
It’s cold and dark when you first wake, sleep weighing heavily in your eyes. A pair of curtains block out the sun from filtering into the room, leaving you to wonder if you had slept through half the day. With a yawn, you stretch, the bed underneath creaking as your body fully rouses from yet another night of fitful slumber. Almost a month back in New York, and it doesn’t make sense to keep blaming your lack of energy on the time difference.
The ache is still ever-present. The pain caused by the void in your heart remains, sharply throbbing in your chest with its refusal to go away. Two heartbreaks, two betrayals, occurring five years apart, but it feels as though not much time has passed in-between.
It hurts to ponder about it, that evening when your seemingly perfect little world came crashing down. Hiding behind rose-tinted glasses, you were unknowingly tricked, fully caught up in a well-crafted illusion. His illusion. Love has blinded you to the sad reality, and in the end, it left you a shattered mess, a hollow shell of your former self.
You doubt you’ll ever be whole again.
Forcing yourself out from under the covers, you reach for your phone on the nightstand to check the time before scrolling through your notifications. Nothing was of interest to you, fortunately; you didn’t have the energy to respond to those you suddenly abandoned. Friends who cared about you but realized you were never close to them. Not in the way it used to be.
As you skimmed over the new texts and emails, you then came across his now unsaved number. The moment you stepped on the plane, you deleted his contact from your phone and blocked him. Yet the last messages he sent to you were still there and haven’t been read since, though you already knew what they could entail—
I’m sorry.
It was never my intention to hurt you.
Please give me another chance.
Let me fix this.
Just come back, Y/N. Come back home.
Home. There was that damn word again. You were beginning to loathe it, even more so knowing that whenever you think of home, you wind up thinking of him.
The last time you saw him was the morning after the storm. Booking a one-way ticket back to the east coast, you then spent the early hours packing as many clothes that would fit in a single suitcase. Tears had long since dried up, having none left as you headed down the stairs, ignoring the look he gave you from afar.
He was dressed in the outfit he had on the night prior; his hair disheveled, eyes bloodshot, and it was quite obvious he endured no sleep. Your resolve nearly crumbles as your gazes connect, bodies close enough that he could reach out the slightest bit, and he’d be holding your hand in the palm of his.
Fighting the urge, you didn’t cave in. You couldn’t allow yourself to fall for it—for him.
No, never again.
As expected, he followed you out of the house, remaining quiet as he watched the cab driver load your luggage in the trunk. You paid him no attention when he approached the vehicle once you climbed in, wanting nothing more than to escape this nightmare. With nowhere else to go and no one to turn to, you decided it was best to leave California, not that you belonged there anyway.
It played out like a scene from a movie—the taxi pulling out of the driveway slowly as the raindrops started to fall. Hearing him call out your name, his voice cracking with each syllable, made you hesitate for a beat. Perhaps you could forgive him, you had thought in that split-second. Forgive and forget; let what happened in the past stay in the past.
But even if you did, the pain’s still there, and it was overpowering. This pain resulting from his deception had been too consuming, too unbearable to move on.
You told the driver to hurry as you couldn’t afford to miss your flight.
The atmosphere in the car was fraught with grim silence. As the house sequestered in the hills vanishes in the rearview mirror, you knew you were running away from it all. You couldn’t stand being here in LA, where every turn, every corner, and every street reminds you of a life that wasn’t truly yours.
As idyllic it once was, you wanted no part of it anymore. Instead, you sought for familiarity, the life you used to have, the one you could only remember.
What you thought was your real home.
Unable to hold it in any longer, you had broken down in the backseat, never feeling more alone than you did at that moment.
You wish you could forget, but it’s not that easy. It’s never easy. Memories of him linger in your mind, still tragically fresh as they haunt you day in and day out. Closing your eyes, you could see him wearing this smile that used to make your stomach flutter. You came to love his smile the same way you had loved him wholly.
Now? Seeing it was a stab to the heart—a reminder of how he took advantage of your condition, your vulnerability. Of every lie you were fed. That smile, the one you previously hoped to wake up to for the rest of your life, had been an act, a facade.
Everything had been a facade.
A sudden knock on the door startles you, and you clicked off the phone screen before announcing to whoever that they could come in. Your mother Nancy enters soon after, her face displaying concern when she realizes you had just woken up. She’s silent as she walks towards the window and then pushes the curtains aside, the sunlight outside immediately washing over the room.
Briefly, you squint to adjust to the brightness, a confirmation that it was past noon already—another wasted day.
“Hey, darling,” she speaks softly as she moves to sit on the mattress beside you. “How are you doing?”
There’s no point in lying, but as much as you greatly appreciated her caringness, you didn’t want to burden her with your problems. They were yours to deal with and yours alone.
“Better.” And that, you were. Just a week ago, you finally stopped crying yourself to sleep. “I might even go out tomorrow and look for a job. Can’t keep freeloading under your roof, right?”
You release a half-chuckle, a small attempt to lighten up the mood. It was comforting when your mother cracks a smile in response.
“Oh, hush. You’re always welcome to stay as long as you need to,” she assures, a loving warmth radiating from her tone.
Lips pressing together, you sense that she has another thing to address. “What’s wrong?”
Nancy pauses to take a breath, shoulders rising and falling. For some reason, you’re on edge, finding yourself bracing for what was to come.
“Have you spoken to Keanu lately?”
Upon hearing his name, you swallowed away the lump in your throat. After telling your parents what had transpired, it stirred up various emotions—mainly anger from your father, sorrow from your mom. Their hearts sank as you recounted the story, tears blurring your eyes that you couldn’t see their faces. It was a good thing, however; you probably wouldn’t have reached the end.
Since then, they’ve refrained from speaking of him and to him. He’s called the house on a few occasions but could never get past the automated answering machine. Pictures of the two of you hanging on the walls were taken down shortly after the revelation, and you were unsure of who had done it.
Your parents still couldn’t believe he was capable of such a thing. He had played them the same way you were, twisting the truth and omitting facts. Painting himself in a way that made them think allowing you to stay with him was the best decision when just months before he treated you as if you didn’t matter.
As if he didn’t love you.
“No.” Curt, you had nothing else to say.
“He’s a persistent one, I’ll tell you that. Left another message last night,” Nancy comments, feeling her stare as you fiddled with the hands in your lap. The next time she speaks, it’s slow and controlled. She’s careful with her words, wary of how you would react to what she has to say. “Hon, the last time you were here, you told me something. Something that I probably should have mentioned the day you woke up in the hospital.”
You tense, eyes flickering up to hers. “What is it?”
She sighs deeply, her smile fleeting and replaced by a taut frown. “I knew you and Keanu were having… problems. Not the full story, but enough that told me you’ve been unhappy for a while.”
“W-Why didn’t you bring this up then?”
“Because the second I saw him in your hospital room, I could see how much he loves you. How scared he was at the thought of nearly losing you—”
“Pfft, sure he was,” you scoff at the statement in disbelief. “What he did—you don’t do that to someone you love. You don’t lie to them, betray them. Hell, if you had given me a heads up earlier, then it would have saved me all this trouble.”
“Y/N—”
“Don’t you get it? He’s an actor. Of course, he’s good at playing pretend. Got us all believing that things were all sunshine and rainbows. He fucked up and fucked up even more by lying. I’ve always had a bad track record in relationships, so I shouldn’t have been too surprised.”
Tension hangs thickly in the air, an apology murmured at the end of a passing second. You didn’t mean to snap at your mother, to let the anger and betrayal consume you that you began taking it out on others although unwillingly.
But you were just too goddamn hurt. Every day, the memories are suffocating you despite constantly wishing and pleading for them to disappear. That life, the one you had with Keanu, no longer exists, and yet you were still holding onto the frayed remains of it, not ready to move on—to let go.
You grieve. You grieve and mourn for the recent past, the happiness and love you experienced in the time you were left unaware. Never have you felt so complete, so content, and much at ease. You had turned a blind eye to the signs, to the small inklings of doubt brewing inside because you thought that there was no way you could get something else as close to this.
Perhaps you were both to blame after all.
“I thought he was different,” you whisper, sorrow flowing from your words. “I thought he was the one. The man I’d settle down with, marry, and then maybe someday, be the father of my kids. We’d build an entire life together, a family, a future. The kind of life where I could look back on it fifty years from now when we’re old and gray and not regret a single thing.”
Feeling your mother’s hand come on top of yours with a light squeeze, you fought off the tears forcing their way from your eyes. You swore you would never shed a tear for Keanu ever again, but you are crumbling from within. The weak walls you put up are now tumbling down, leaving you even more vulnerable than before.
“I want to hate him. I want him to feel my pain and suffer through it, knowing that he’s the reason why. But I can’t. Somehow, I just can’t.”
“It’s because you still love him. No matter how much it hurts, you’re still in love with him,” Nancy adds solemnly, and you nod shakily. “You’re healing, dear. So far, all you’ve done is put on a bandaid, but it doesn’t mean the wound closes up immediately. It’ll burn, it’ll bleed, and it’ll ache, and right now, that’s what you’re feeling; the pain of a fresh open wound.”
“Make the pain stop,” you mumbled incoherently as you lean against your mom’s side, wet cheeks pressed to her shoulder. “It has to stop.”
“And it will,” she promises, listening to your soft and tired cries. “It’ll take time for the wound to heal, but eventually, it will. Until then, life continues, and you would have to as well. You don’t have to go all-in right away, but don’t let this heartbreak hinder you from living, sweetie. You’re strong, and I believe you will feel that same happiness again, in one form or another. But you won’t find it unless you go out and look for it.”
For the first time in what seemed like a while, you felt something other than loss and despair. It creeps into you slowly, half-expecting a cold, crushing weight to fall heavily on your chest rather than the warmth and light it is. But as quickly as it came, the sensation subsides, a wave of loneliness, emptiness filling the vacant space surrounding your heart.
A shuddering breath released, you then reflect upon what your mother said about time and how time heals all wounds. You wonder how much time is needed until you can finally break free from the remnants of the past and breathe again. Could be days, weeks, or even months more, but it’s right there, waiting for you on the horizon.
You may not have a place to call home, but what you do have is time.
---
Seconds turn into minutes; minutes turn into hours. The sun sets, the moon rises; bright, blues skies bleed into a fiery red before dimming to an inky darkness. The world spins on its axis as people wake, move, then sleep, and the cycle begins all over again.
Two weeks have come and gone, and life pushes onward. You could tell by the scenery outside where the season of fall has taken charge of the Northeast. Days are shorter, with nights stretching out longer as the year fades into winter. Time was flying by at a brisk pace. Very soon, a blanket of snow will cover the ground you walk on, reminding you to take a step back and admire the natural beauty of mid-November.
The crispness of the late afternoon air is refreshing as it fills your lungs, a welcome change from the hazy summer heat. Leaves that were once lively shades of green are now painted in deep hues of amber and burgundy, and they crunch beneath your boots with each leisure step down the earthy path. The nearby lake is as pristine as ever, sparkling freely underneath the rays of the ochre sun as it waits for the impending frost.
Wandering about outdoors for hours now, you were lost in your stream of thoughts. You honestly felt better, not entirely mended, but just enough that you can step out of the house and explore the quaint little town. A picturesque place, it was a perfect settlement for your retired parents where everyone knew everybody; their faces, names, the street they lived on. Boilding down to more personal details such as knowing the pets they owned, which book club they’re a part of, and any recent travels.
When the townsfolk saw you, you sensed the feeling of familiarity. Those you passed by in the streets waved at you, and though you couldn’t exactly recall your relationship with them, it made you smile. Recently, old friends and family in the area had begun reaching out after hearing you were back. You never gave them the full explanation, only revealing that things in California did not work out, and you figured it was best to leave.
Was it a permanent decision? Most likely. Life here is simpler, quieter. You enjoyed the peacefulness, favoring the calm atmosphere of this town much over the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles. It gave you space to think, to focus, to breathe. To reacquaint with yourself, rebuild who you are as a person by taking this journey of self-discovery.
It’s the brand new start you desperately wanted, needed. An opportunity to find your place in this world without the past holding you back. Without the shadow of the woman you once were looming over you. And if your memories don’t ever return, which deep down, you hope they never would, you would be fine with it.
You were tired of being stuck searching pieces of the past. You had to live.
Trekking up the gravel road leading to your parents’ home, a black car sits on top of the hill, one that you did not recognize. Perplexed, you approached the house with hesitant steps, dragging your feet through the pile of dead and dry leaves. There was a moment of panic when you noticed a man sitting on the front porch steps, hands clasped on his knees as he hung his head low, a curtain of dark hair masking his identity.
But you don’t need to think twice, for you already know who it is.
“Keanu?”
His name slipping out of your mouth feels different now. Gone is the affectionate tone that it was usually spoken in. It held no meaning, void of any warmth or tenderness. Keanu, the name is bitter on your tongue, a poison that could cause you to spiral down yet again, and saying it out loud brought upon a rage that swirls through your veins.
How dare he show up here unannounced?
As you take your breaths, one… two… three... and out, Keanu straightens his posture and meets your stern glare. Slowly, he gets up, the expression on his face hard to read. But aside from that, he looked worse for wear. The bags underneath his eyes were dark and prominent, the beard on his chin was unruly and untamed. He appears gaunt and exhausted, as if he hasn’t slept a wink ever since you walked out of the door and out of his life.
“What the hell are you doing here?” You’re the first to break the thick silence, a testament of your bravery and strength of some sort. Brows furrowing and teeth gritting in anger, it contrasts with Keanu’s lax demeanor as he steps closer. “No, stay back. You have no right to be here right now.”
“Y/N, please...” He speaks calmly, each and every one of his movements measured. “I’m not here to fight—”
“I have nothing to say to you,” you seethed, shaking your head as you stormed past him and towards the door. Tears brew in your cloudy eyes, a sign of how much he still affected you. Seeing him again after all this time only proved that the wound he had inflicted bleeds to this day.
“You don’t have to say anything,” Keanu quickly trails from behind, his voice dripping with utter desperation. “Please, just… give me a chance to talk. All you have to do is listen, and I promise you won’t ever have to see me again.”
The seriousness in his timbre causes you to halt in your tracks. Swallowing dryly, you turn around, sad, tired eyes reaching his guilt-filled ones. Keanu stands before you with a face written in despair, making him barely recognizable. The way he’s staring at you as if he’s hopeless and in pure anguish is unsettling, and you almost pitied him for it.
“Y/N…” He pleads softly, defeatedly. “Hear me out, please.”
You wrestled between your options, half apathetic, half curious of what Keanu had to say. Unspoken words on the tip of his tongue, he mutely begs for you to relent, and if this is all it takes for him to leave you alone, leave you for good, then so be it.
“Ten minutes,” you muttered, low enough that he barely catches it at first. Crossing your arms against your chest, the gentle autumn wind rustling through the trees pierces the silent air as you observe Keanu staggering forward, a hand rubbing at the nape of his neck.
“I’m sorry,” he begins, gazing at you with his searching brown eyes. “I-I know saying it a thousand times won’t make a difference, but I really am sorry. What I did before and after the accident was inexcusable and selfish. I hurt you, and I will never forgive myself that. Don’t expect you to do so, either. You probably hate my guts right now, and flying out here might be a mistake, but I needed to talk to you in person. To say goodbye one last time.”
Brushing his hair back, Keanu then pads over to the trunk of the car, and all you can do is wait for him to come back. It doesn’t take long, but he makes two trips to unload two boxes, setting each of them down in the space separating you two. He instantly notices the confusion etched across your features, burying his hands in his coat pocket with an exhale.
“Are those—”
“All the things you left behind,” Keanu finishes feebly. “Thought you would want them back.”
Stunned, a mirthless chuckle escapes your throat. “You didn’t have to do this. Those aren’t my things anyway.”
“But they are—”
“They’re not mine,” you cut him off with a weary gaze. “Keanu, I’ve said this before; I’m not the woman you fell in love with. Not anymore. Look, throughout those months we spent together, I tried to fit into this life everyone told me I had. A life that’s far from what I was used to. God, it feels like a dream being her. So confident, happy, and successful. Waking up from the coma, of course, I would want that. I had just gotten out of a terrible relationship which left me broken and unworthy of anything and anyone. Then you showed me the love I thought I didn’t deserve, and it kept me from realizing that it was all too good to be true.”
Eyes faltering to the ground, your fingers fumbled with the hem of your sweater, ultimately distracting yourself from the tears threatening to fall. “The truth is, I didn’t know you. You were, are, a stranger to me. You had done things behind my back, hid details that would have been a deal-breaker, but you didn’t care. I’ve thought about it a lot lately; would I have stayed if you told me from the very beginning. I wasn’t sure if I was madder at you kissing someone else, knowing how much it would hurt me, or the fact that you lied to fix this—us.”
There is a moment of silence that weighs over everything. The wind stops blowing; the leaves are motionless. Time seems to slow around you and Keanu as he waits for your next words. Words that you are still searching for since you hadn’t prepared to voice those thoughts out loud. They all came rushing, flooding like a broken dam, too overwhelming to keep at bay.
“Which one is it?” Keanu probes delicately, equally afraid of which answer you’re going to give.
“Neither,” you revealed, surprisingly. “I’m angrier at myself for falling too fast; for being the naive little girl who let herself be fooled, who refused to listen to her instincts even though she knew they were usually right.”
You see Keanu open his mouth to speak, but you weren’t done. “I always believed this accident was a curse. It erased years worth of memories that, at this point, I’ll never get back. But now, I see the good that came out of it. Our fights, our arguments, they were all signs that our relationship was falling apart, but I couldn’t let go of it—of you. I held onto us thinking the bad will just phase out eventually when in reality, I couldn’t bear giving up on you and this life we shared.”
Another pause. “Huh, funny. Looking at it, the same thing happened all over again.”
With that said, you felt relieved, somewhat lighter. Despite previous inclinations, you didn’t shout or yell at Keanu. Nor did you discuss to the fullest extent of the suffering you’ve endured. Strangely, it was nearly therapeutic admitting all of that to him, to yourself. For months, you had been unable to let go and accept the truth, allowing fear and doubt to control your actions.
But that was then, and this is now.
And now, it was time for you to be free.
“Guess this is it,” Keanu sighs dejectedly. He didn’t come here to win you back, knowing there’s nothing that he could do or say to repair the damage. Like you, he’s letting go, letting this be the closure he needs, and you need as well. “I guess this is goodbye.”
“Yeah,” you agreed quietly, “Guess this is goodbye.”
Before you could leave his sight to spare Keanu the awkwardness, he holds up a finger, signaling you to wait a second. Swiftly, he goes to retrieve something that’s lying on the front seat, something that you’ve spent countless hours flipping through. He then reluctantly passes it over to you, and you’re unsure what to do with it.
“Your pictures,” he points out, though you were already aware. “I’m not trying to be an asshole or anything by giving this, but this book is yours. Keep it, burn it, do whatever seems right to you. But I want you to know, to remember, that I did love you. I still do, and these photos are proof of it, even if you can’t bring yourself to believe that I’m telling the truth. You deserve love and to be loved, Y/N. More than anything in the universe. I fucked up my chance to be the one to tell you that every day, but it doesn’t mean the next person you fall for will.”
“Ke…” your voice suddenly breaks with emotion, uncertain of what to add after his statement. It’s because you still love him. No matter how much it hurts, you’re still in love with him, your mother’s earlier words echo in your mind, ringing true in your heart. Even after everything, a piece of you still loved Keanu, and saying goodbye to him more painful than you anticipated.
As you stand frozen, Keanu inches nearer until he’s by your feet, the palm of his hand coming to rest on your cheek. He strokes your face with a tender caress before tilting your chin upwards to meet his gaze, brushing his thumb along your lower lip gently. You allow him to have this moment, to hold you and study you for a final time, commit you to memory as this would be the last.
Eyes fluttering shut, you feel him press a soft kiss on your forehead, the warmth of it immediately spreading throughout your body before he slowly pulls away.
“Take care of yourself, Y/N,” Keanu says, opening the driver’s side door of his rental. You look at each other once more and see the subtle, hopeful smile he shoots your way. “And don’t be afraid to love again.”
You watch as he starts driving away, opting to wait until the car is finally out of view before releasing the breath you didn’t know you were holding.
In your hands is a keepsake of your memories. A collection of captured moments that you had cherished so dearly. But things are different now; mistakes were made, words were said, people have grown apart. You found no reason to linger in the past when there’s nothing left to salvage.
Nothing left to do but heal.
The warmth of Keanu’s kiss eventually disappears, the world around you unpausing, continuing as it was before. You stay standing in place, glancing back and forth between the book you clutched on tightly and the boxes laying on the ground.
Yet in the quietude, the wind still blows. The leaves still fall, and the earth still spins.
Time resumes, bit by bit; passing for life to move forward—
For you to move on.

Accidental Hurtful Words
Tom Holland x sister
Summary: Tom just wants to do a movie on his own but his siblings have other plans. This leads to words being said that he regrets saying and even thinking.
Warnings: Angst, car accident, rude sibling, hurtful words, probably crappy ending
A/N: I’m not from England so I apologize for anything that’s wrong. I also just pulled up a map of Kingston and picked two random roads to put in the story.

One month. That is how long your brother, Tom, had off between movies. Sam and Harry had been with him on the last one. He loved his brothers, but he wanted one movie where it was just him. Where he could focus on himself and not constantly have thoughts of “are my brothers okay?” or “Are they bored being here or are they keeping themselves entertained?”
Tom had two weeks left before he went to America to film his next film. He had yet to have the conversation to his brother, Harry, that he didn’t want him to come along this time. He was dreading it because he didn’t want to hurt his feelings. After many pep talks to himself, he finally decided today would be the day that he would tell him.
It was late morning. Tom had just gotten out of bed. He went into the kitchen and fixed himself some tea. He saw Harry pacing outside in the garden on the phone. When Harry hung up, he walked back inside with a big smile on his face.
“Morning Tom.” Harry smiled. “Got some good news.”
“Yeah? What’s that?” Tom said.
“I got a gig on your next movie. They are going to let me help the director.” Harry basically beamed. “They said they got you a house and I can crash in one of the rooms since they are paying. I’ll be flying out with you in a couple weeks.”
“Oh.” Tom said trying to sound excited. “That’s amazing. I’m proud of you man.”
“Oh and I think Y/N had some news or something. She said she was stopping by for lunch.” Harry mention Tom and his little sister.
Y/N is seventeen. She has been trying to get into acting. Just like her big brother. She has always looked up to him. She has always wanted to be just like him. Be just at good at acting as he is, be as kind-hearted, and all around decent human being. It had been your goal since you were 3 years old and he was 10 years old.
“Do you know what she’s wanting to tell us?” Tom asked.
“No idea. I knew she had auditions this week. And I think she had a meeting with her manager yesterday. Maybe she found a part.” Harry said.
Tom nodded and finished his tea. He felt annoyed. He just wanted one project for himself. One project he didn’t have to have any of his family members there. Every project since ‘The Impossible’ he had someone with him.
He got up and put his mug in the sink before going to his room to get ready for the day. About half a hour later, Tom was sitting on the couch scrolling through Instagram. He was trying so hard to relax and get rid of this tense and angry feeling to go away. He heard a knock at the front door before he heard it open and a soft “hello?” followed.
“In here.” Tom yelled. Y/N walked in and smiled at her brother. She ran over and gave him a hug. Over the past week, she had been trying so hard to get a part that she hadn’t seen much of him. “What’s got you in such a good mood? Harry said you had some news?”
“I do. I finally got my first big part in a movie!” You smiled. Tom felt a sense of pride swell in his chest. You had been working so hard to get your first part.
“That’s amazing Y/N/N! I’m so proud of you” Tom said as he wrapped you in a hug and kissed you on your forehead. “What movie is it?”
Y/N smiled shyly. She was nervous to tell him it was his movie. She had heard Tom talking to Harrison before the last one he filmed saying he wanted to go to a movie alone.
“It’s uh..” you stuttered. “It’s Left Drowning.” You kept looking at your hands. You heard Tom sigh. You looked up at him and he had a tired smile on his face.
“That’s great. We’ll get to work together.” Tom smiled as he stood up. “I’m going to go hit the gym. I’ll talk to you later.” Tom kissed the top of your head and walked towards his room.
Hours later, you had texted Tom to see if he wanted to grab dinner with you. You just wanted to make sure he was okay with you going. You didn’t want to upset him by not letting him go work on his movie alone. It had been 30 minutes and Tom still hadn’t text you back. You decided you would drive over to his house.
When you arrived, you knocked and let yourself in. You could hear murmuring in the kitchen and you followed to the sound. When you were just outside the door you heard Tom’s voice.
“Man I know I should be happy, but I really just wanted one movie where I didn’t have family on set. I would be okay with them visiting or something, but staying the whole 3 and a half months. I don’t know. I had it in my head I was going to be alone this time and it’s taking time to adjust.” Tom said on the phone as he leaned on the kitchen counter. You were trying so hard not to make a noise but you also didn’t want to eavesdrop. You were just about to make your presence known when Tom said something that made your heart drop.
“I’m pretty sure she only got the role because I’m her brother. No way she would of gotten this big of a role for her first time if it wasn’t for us being related.” Tom said.
You felt tears start forming and had to get out of there. Someone you loved and trusted just said the thing you were afraid of since you got the part. You were worried others would think that, but you didn’t think your own family would. You turned to run out of the house and accidentally hit a chair. You looked up to see Tom had turned and saw you. He paled noticing you had heard what he said.
“Y/N.” Tom whispered. “Haz, I’ll call you back.” He tried to slowly walk towards you but you ran towards the front door. When you got outside you sprinted to your car and locked yourself in. By the time you got it started, Tom was knocking at the window.
“Y/N/N. Don’t go. Let’s talk this out.” He shouted. You shook your head and put your car in reverse. You drove. You wanted to be as far a way from him as possible. Tom had let Sam borrow his car that afternoon so he took off after you on foot.
You drove a few blocks before you blacked out. Tom slowed as he saw the car run the stop sign. He saw it crash into the drivers side of the car.
“Y/N!” Tom yelled as he sprinted to check on you. He pulled out his phone and dialed 999. “Help! My sister has been in a car accident.”
“Whats the address sir?” The emergency lady asked. Tom looked around to find the intersection.
“At the intersection of Geneva Rd and Grove Lane.” Tom reached your car and saw that you weren’t moving and your eyes were closed. “Hurry she’s not moving. Y/N! Y/N! Can you hear me?” Tom yelled as he tried to open your door.
“Sir, emergency services are on their way. Please try to remain calm. Is anyone else involved?”
“Uh. Yeah the other driver. She uh...” Tom stuttered as he watch the other driver get out of her car. “She’s out of her car moving.” Tom watched as the lady lifted her arm and took a drink out of a bottle. “I think she’s drunk. It looks like she’s drinking alcohol. Please hurry. I can’t get my sister’s door open.”
Finally Tom heard the sirens. They immediately parked and ran over to Tom to see if he is okay.
“I just witnessed it. I’m fine! Please. You have to help her.” Tom said as he started to cry. The situation finally fully hitting him.
“We will do the best we can. Please step aside. We have to pry this door open.” Said the firefighter who was bringing out the jaws of life.
Tom stepped back to watch as they cut the door off his sister’s car. He had bought that car for her for her sixteenth birthday. She was so proud of that car and took extra care of it. Tom sighed as he watched them put a neck brace on her and put her on a stretcher.
“Do you want to ride with her to the hospital?” The EMT asked.
“Yes. Let me grab her bag from her car.” Tom said as he ran to the car and then to the ambulance. He hopped in the back and immediately grabbed your left hand.
When they arrived at the hospital, they rushed you into a room so a doctor could look over you. You still hadn’t woke up. Tom was stopped and was told he had to stay in the waiting room. He paced for ten minutes before he called his parents and his siblings to tell them what had happened.
When Dom and Nikki arrived, Tom hugged his mother and cried. Saying it was his fault. She hugged him back as Dom went over to the front desk to see if there was an update.
“Okay so in about half a hour we should be able to go back to see her. They are just doing some x-rays and a CT scan. When they finish that we can go to her room and sit with her while we wait on the results. They also said she is now awake and alert.” Dom said walking back to his wife and oldest son.
“Oh that’s great.” Tom said with a sigh feeling so much better knowing she was awake and alert.
By the time Paddy, Sam, and Harry arrived, they were being let into Y/N room.
You were sitting up on the bed with a cast on your left foot and a sling on your right arm. The whole family walked in and gave you hug saying how glad they were that you were okay. Tom stayed back in the corner of the room just watching.
“I’ll be okay guys. Just some scratches and bruises and maybe broken bones, but I’ll be okay.” You smiled at your family.
“Y/N, what happened?” Nikki asked as she sat on the side of your bed.
“I don’t know. I was driving and then nothing.” You told her.
“Knock knock.” A police officer said as he leaned into the doorway. “We have some questions for Y/N and Tom if that’s okay.”
The family looked confused as to why they needed to question Tom but they all stood up and waited outside the room. The police officer left the door open so Harry stood by it so he could hear the conversation.
“Y/N, my name is Officer Johnson. I arrested the woman that hit you for drinking and driving. She was way over the legal limit.” You looked at him shocked. “You were very lucky that this wasn’t worse. Also that your brother here witnessed the accident and was able to call for help immediately. The woman that hit you has done this three other times, but somehow keeps getting released. It is now my personal goal to make sure she stays in so she can’t hurt anyone else.”
“Wow.” You said shocked at the news of what he just said. You looked over at Tom. “You saw it happen?” Tom nodded his head.
“We will keep you updated on if anything changes. You can stop by the station in the next few days to go to your car and get anything out of it that was left behind. Here is my card. Just call me and I will help you arrange getting your stuff.” He smiled at you and then walked out.
“Y/N. I’m so sor...” Tom started to say.
“What does he mean you witnessed the wreck?” Harry asked as he walked in the room. The rest of the family following looking between Harry and Tom.
“I saw the car hit her. I was chasing after her.” Tom said looking down at his shoes.”
“What did you mean it was your fault?” Nikki asked.
“I... I said some things to Harrison. Just to vent. I don’t... I don’t even know why I thought them.” Tom said as he turned to you. “but I am so sorry. I didn’t mean what I said. I.. I just had a rough day and I was venting about everything and you just happened to hear the part about you. Which isn’t true. I don’t think that because you are so much better than me.
“You are going to be way bigger than me and I’ll just be known as Y/N Holland’s older brother. I won’t even be remembered for my movies once you make it. Y/N/N you are incredible and got this role all on your own. I had no idea you were auditioning for this movie. They hired you because you killed it and they want you to be a part of this movie that is going to touch people’s heart.” Tom grabbed your hand and gave it a squeeze.
“It’s okay Tom. I forgive you. I was over there to talk to you about the role. I was going to back out if you didn’t want me to go. I heard you talking Haz about doing a movie without anyone being there with you. Wanting a movie you could just focus on yourself and not worry about anyone else.”
“And that was wrong of me. I think I was just feeling overwhelmed and put the blame on everyone else. I’m sorry for all of this.” Tom leaned over and kissed your forehead. “I promise I will take care of you until you get better. Then I’ll just take care of you because I love you.”
You smiled at your brother and reached up to give him a one armed hug.
“I love you too Tommy.” You kissed his cheek as you left his embrace. You leaned back and looked at your family. “I love all of you.”

_______
I’m the violence in the pouring rain
I’m a hurricane
Come and fade me
Come and fade me
I’m a hurricane
_______
It rained the day she was born. Like really rained. It was the kind of torrential downpour that turned the whole sky a threateningly dark mix of indigo and grey.
Her Mother hadn’t planned for it. Hadn’t considered the impact that the weather would play on her child’s entrance into the world.
And she’d felt a lighthearted resentment towards this child, for deciding to push her way out at such an inconvenient time.
Because they’d sat in traffic.
Full of panic.
In the middle of a city-wide weather emergency.
“Leave it to baby number five,” her Mother had breathed through a contraction, hands gripping tightly to the cushions of the passenger seat. “To be born….during….a hurricane.”
“This hasn’t been classified as a hurricane yet, Carolyn-”
The glare she’d given her husband was enough to shut him up as she exhaled through the pressure of her contractions.
And she’d gripped the edges of the seat even tighter.
//
The same way Amelia does now, 18 years later.
Her fingers grip the edges of the seat, and her fingernails scratch over the fabric lightly, as she stares out the passenger side window.
It’s raining out. Not a downpour or anything. But steadily enough to trigger that feeling. That feeling that’s uncertain and nostalgic at the same time. Two practically opposite notions that crash together like the thunder that’s threatening the sky.
She hears Derek clear his throat, and her gaze snaps to his just in time.
Just in time for her to witness her brother’s eyes dart from her tightly-wound fingers to the road ahead as he drives.
She quickly moves her hands, on instinct. Burying them in her lap instead. There’s an overly-positive inflection to her brother’s tone as he speaks out into the space between them.
“I was nervous, too,” he laughs a bit under his breath, like he’s recalling a specific memory. “When I went away to school.”
“I’m not nervous.”
Disbelief flashes quickly across his face, but then he replaces it with something more soft. Like he’s deciding to give his younger sister the benefit of the doubt. Like he’s actually letting her have this one.
“Well, then….I’m impressed.”
Amelia rolls her eyes. And then she shivers involuntarily.
There’s something about being in an air-conditioned car, protected from the heat of the storm outside. It causes chills to rise through her body, despite it being the end of August. She turns in her seat, reaching towards the back of the car, to where all of her belongings are packed. Pulling out a crocheted blanket, she twists forward in her seat again and covers her bare legs with it.
She stares at the road ahead, finding patterns in the wet pavement, before she tentatively opens the conversation back up.
“Was Mom with you?” She utters the question, and she doesn’t let herself look in Derek’s direction. “Was Mom there to drop you off at college?”
It’s not until after she voices the question, that she realizes. Realizes that’s the thing that’s potentially been bothering her.
Derek sighs. And his hands grip the steering wheel a little tighter.
“She was.”
Amelia nods.
This answer doesn’t surprise her. And it doesn’t hurt either. It’s mostly just numb acceptance at this point.
She finally turns to him, and she almost doesn’t recognize herself in her next question.
“It’s because I look like him, right?”
It’s the first time she’s comprehended it out loud. The weight of it hits her like a ton of bricks. The fact that it all comes back to that.
“Who?”
Amelia gives him an incredulous stare, her mouth forming in a tight line. It amplifies her refusal to feed into Derek’s decided lack of wit.
Because he knows what she’s asking.
And Derek knows that Amelia knows that.
Amelia refuses to blink. She lets her eyes become unfocused as she stubbornly holds her gaze.
Until Derek eventually nods, giving up.
“Amelia….” He sighs. “You look like me.” He turns briefly in her direction, like he’s hoping her stare will have faltered slightly at his explanation so far. But it hasn’t. She’s relentless sometimes.
He exhales a bit shakily before he continues, eyes shifting back to the road.
“You look like me….and you look like Dad, too.”
Amelia finally lets herself blink at that. Relief floods her dry eyes and her mind, too.
She turns back to the window, focusing instead on the world around them. Her eyes land on two particular raindrops against the window. And she smiles slightly as she watches them drop down towards the ledge. Like it’s a race to see which raindrop finishes first. Which raindrop will dip first into the crack of the window pane, where it’ll disappear forever.
//
It’s a game she played as a child, too.
She loved to watch the raindrops race against the plastic walls of her playhouse. In the quiet corner of her vast backyard.
It had rained on the day of her 6th birthday party. And Amelia had almost been glad for that.
Her Mother had talked it up the entire week.
“Saturday is Amy’s birthday!”
“Saturday is all about Amy!”
But it felt false to Amelia, even as a 6-year-old.
The forced element of the celebration. And the way her Mother had demanded her siblings participate, too.
But the party was cancelled. And Amelia instead found herself in her favorite place to be during a rainstorm. Surrounded by the yellow walls of her plastic playhouse.
Derek had found her that day. A smile playing at his lips as he ducked his wet head of hair into the window of her little hideaway.
“Whatcha thinkin about, Amy?”
//
“What are you thinking about?”
Amelia quickly shakes from her daze, abandoning the slight pride she’d just felt at her choice of raindrop winning the race against the car window.
She turns to Derek, and she even smiles a bit in his direction.
“I’m thinking about….starting over.”
“Starting over?!” Derek gives her one of his classic smiles. There’s an element of surprise to it, that lands in his eyes. But ultimately it’s laced with excitement, through and through. “Starting over is good.”
Amelia beams at him. It starts off small but she can feel the way it grows on her face. It’s the kind of grin that makes her cheeks dimple.
Derek shakes his head, laughing under his breath as he faces the road again.
“You know….no one wants you to start completely over, Amy.”
She raises her eyebrows at this, her grin transforming into more of a doubtful smirk at her brother’s words.
“Well I, for one, don’t want you to change.”
Amelia exhales a slight chuckle.
“I’ll try not to get rid of the good parts,” she mutters.
Derek is focused on the road in front of them, so all Amelia can really decipher, is his side profile. But she can see it. The hint of glassiness in his grey-blue orbs.
Silence falls between them, and Amelia feels a tightness form within her own throat. She attempts to clear it, tries to alleviate what the moment is turning out to be. But then Derek starts speaking again in a low tone, and the tightness spreads itself further.
“Dad would be so proud of you, you know.”
Amelia smiles tightly.
She only half believes that statement.
Because truthfully, she has no idea how she got here. How she managed to make it this far anyway. That realization hits her hard and fast and suddenly she doesn’t care that her eyes are stinging the same way Derek’s were a moment ago.
“I wish I remembered him better,” she admits, and her voice is notably thin.
Derek turns to her, his eyes filled with something Amelia can’t quite place.
“I feel like….” She continues, ignoring the way her voice wavers. “My idea of him comes from the pictures I’ve seen? If that makes sense? And I don’t have the actual memories anymore….I don’t….I wish I remembered what he was really like, you know? His voice, his mannerisms, everything-”
“I know what you mean.”
They exit the freeway, the car slowing at a stoplight as they enter the college town.
“You’re so like him in so many ways, Amelia.” Derek says it in a whispered tone, as they turn onto the main road. Like the comprehension is overwhelming to even him. “So….just like you said….don’t get rid of the good parts, okay?”
Amelia lets herself smile as she turns away from him, eyes scanning the surroundings of the town that will be her new home. The rain has died down significantly, and Amelia questions whether that’s an accurate observation, or if it’s just that they’re driving at a slower speed now.
“Okay,” she eventually responds.
//
“Are you okay?”
The question had come from Derek.
“Jesus Christ, you scared me,” Amelia had practically gasped upon slipping through the front door. She thought she’d been inconspicuous.
Derek stared at her expectantly.
“I’m fine,” she muttered, but she couldn’t stop her teeth from chattering.
“It’s pouring out. Did you walk?” There’d been criticism in his voice.
“You’d be more upset if I said I drove, right?”
“Amy.”
“Derek.”
They’d been at a standoff. In the middle of the entryway. Both of them seemingly unphased by the mix of mud and water that tracked all over their Mother’s favorite area rug.
Derek sighed. And Amelia stared at the floor. Unable to make eye contact, too aware that her eyes were hinted red and full of haze.
“Why didn’t you call me for a ride?”
“I didn’t know you’d still be here.” Her reply sounded bitter. But maybe it had just been the tightness in her jaw, the pressure from fighting off the wet and the cold.
There was a moment of stunned silence.
“You missed Dad’s birthday dinner.” Derek’s tone had been accusatory again.
“Dad missed it, too.”
“Amelia-”
She’d cut Derek off with a bizarrely edged laugh.
Their Dad’s birthday dinner. They’d celebrate every year as a family. They’d sit down and have dinner together. And Amelia ultimately despised it. Mostly because they’d started grouping it together with her own birthday celebration. Her birthday followed a week after their Dad’s. And it just served as another reminder. Another reason for displaced resentment.
Amelia bit down on her laugh, stunned. She’d be turning 16 the following week.
“Amelia.” He said it again, this time more cautionary.
She finally looked at him. And she could see genuine concern in his expression.
“Are you okay?” He asked for a second time.
All Amelia could do was nod.
“Are you on your way out?” She whispered the question.
And then it was Derek’s turn to nod.
“I just wanted to say goodbye before I took back off to school,” he explained. “And I wanted to tell you happy birthday.”
Amelia smirked coldly at him, and finally started moving towards the stairs.
“Bye, Derek.”
//
2 years later and they’ve yet to improve this part.
It’s a rushed goodbye. Like it usually is for them. They don’t do goodbyes very well. Maybe that had something to do with shared past experiences.
Derek helps her set up her dorm room and when there’s nothing left to do, a knowing shift occurs in the atmosphere.
He pulls his hands out of his pockets, and forces a smile on his face. And when he pulls her into a tight hug, it takes Amelia a moment to reciprocate the gesture.
But Derek just squeezes her tighter until she does.
“You’re going to love it here, Amy,” he mumbles, before pulling away.
And Amelia just nods. Not able to find her words.
Because they’re bad at goodbyes. Which Derek knows. So he lets her off the hook, backs out of the small room with one last glance in her direction.
And Amelia watches him go.
//
Amelia doesn’t love it here, right away.
She tries to. She really does.
She sits in the shared common areas and convinces herself that maybe she’ll step up and talk to someone today.
It’s strange. She’s an outgoing person. She could be the life of the party when she really wanted to. But, she sits now, textbooks open in front of her, glancing around the library at fellow students. And she feels worlds beyond them. She questions to herself how she can even feel years beyond people her own age.
And that’s the self-inquiry that ruins her plan. She gets way too inside her own head and it hinders any chance she has at trying today.
Instead she gets up, shoving her books into her bag and walking purposefully to the exit.
It’s when she reaches her dorm, that the rain starts. She can smell it first. The distinct way the air changes when it’s about to rain. It feels humid and thick and her skin starts to feel sticky before the cold front lightly passes over her, and it provides relief.
The sky gets dark and it starts to sprinkle, just as she climbs the steps of her building.
As she enters her room, a dark cloud of restlessness storms her mind. Because she doesn’t know what her next move is. What her plan is for the rest of the day.
She looks around the small room, eyes catching on a piece of paper that’s been slipped under her door.
She picks it up, and when she reads the words on the flyer, she wants to laugh to herself. Because it simply lists an address for a party later tonight. And she’s laughing because, is this really how college works?
She decides there’s no way she’s going to the party.
//
After 2 hours of staring at the ugly off-white paneling of her dorm room ceiling, Amelia sits up in bed.
Because there’s a hint of it. A fleeting thought. A question that flashes through her mind almost too quickly to even divulge in.
But it’s there. The question of ‘what’s the worst that could happen?’
It’s enough to make her get out of bed. Which is confusing, to say the least. Because she hadn’t anticipated spending her evening this way. But now she’s pulling open her dresser drawers, trying to find something to wear. And she’s glancing at herself in the mirror, reaching for her makeup bag at the same time.
The last thing she remembers thinking, when she exits her dorm room is, what’s the worst that could happen?
//
The worst that could happen, happens almost right away.
It takes place in the form of ‘jungle juice.’
“It’s called jungle juice!”
Amelia stares blankly at the frat boy in front of her. She’s standing way too close to the bouncing speakers and the music is way too loud.
“What?!”
“Jungle juice!” He yells again, “Basically everyone brings a fifth of something and it all gets poured in there! It’s disgusting, but it makes for a dangerous concoction! Want me to grab you a cup?”
Amelia shakes her head. She doesn’t know what she was thinking.
Well, that’s not entirely true. She was thinking that she had to at least try. Give a shot at relating to people her age.
She surveys the boy in front of her. He’s attractive. Jet black hair, green eyes and even a slightly alternative vibe to him. It surprises Amelia, considering she’s in a frat house. He seems unexpected. And maybe her type. She’d probably go for him, if she wasn’t currently so inside her own head about it.
She feels her nails dig lightly into the palms of her hands as she drops her arms to the side, and she immediately catches herself. She exhales, trying to relax.
“I’ll grab something else, probably!” she yells back to the boy patiently standing in front of her.
Patiently, she thinks. Because she’s already a step ahead of him, labeling him, and she knows she’s someone that requires patience in events like these.
She shifts her eyes away from him, instead looking to the tiny window in the corner of the crowded room. It’s raining outside. Drops of condensation race against the glass in a familiar motion.
A feeling swells in her chest that’s hard to ignore. There’s a strong desire to escape her current environment and it practically makes her want to crawl out of her skin.
“I’m not supposed to be here!” She shouts over the music, turning back to the conversation.
“Huh?!”
“It’s raining!” She’s an octave louder this time.
“Yeah! It’s good we’re inside, right?!”
Amelia shakes her head, stepping away. Ignoring the confusion on the boy’s face, she turns on her heels, pushing through the crowd until she can find an exit. When she finally makes it out onto the less crowded porch, she lets out a huge exhale.
She keeps waking. The sun is setting, and the impending storm makes the sky a glorious shade of violet.
The rain pelts her skin as she walks hastily through the campus and although it provides relief, there’s also a sense of something else. It’s almost yearning. Or maybe homesickness. But it doesn’t make sense, because she’s never craved home before.
She thinks she’s crying. She can’t really tell. It’s hard to separate the rain from any potential saltiness that threatens her cheeks. The only thing that gives her away is her labored breathing.
She’s overwhelmed. And for once in her life she wishes Derek were here. He’d know the right thing to say.
Her thoughts are interrupted when a figure passes her on her left. It’s sudden. She doesn’t anticipate it and she doesn’t hear anyone approach, mostly because her thoughts are so loud and there’s thunder starting to rumble through the sky.
“Fuck,” she gasps, hand clutching her chest as the stranger passes her.
He’s running, but he slows his jog after she voices her alarm.
He turns around, taking in Amelia’s startled expression.
“Oh, sorry!” His own surprised guise shifts quickly to one of concern, though.
“Are you okay?” He asks, voice raised to compensate for the rain as he calls out to her.
Amelia nods.
“You just scared me, is all,” she shrugs.
He looks her up and down, but Amelia doesn’t even feel scrutinized by it.
He steps towards her. And Amelia finds her voice.
“Out for a run?” She’s surprised by her own curiosity.
He shakes his head as he approaches. “I was walking back from the library,” he points to the sky, in an obvious gesture. “And then it started raining….and I started running….”
Amelia feels a smile break across her face, the dimpled kind. Because there’s something about the way he looks up at the sky while he explains himself, that amuses her.
He turns to her, and he has a wide grin on his face as he catches his breath from running. Not wide in the way that he’s smiling hugely, or anything. But Amelia can tell that his typical smile just happens to stretch that far. It makes her own smile further.
“You heading to north hall?”
Amelia nods.
“I live there, too!” He exclaims. “Food sucks but we have the biggest closets out of all the dorms on the entire campus.”
Amelia raises her eyebrows at this.
“Am I….bothering you?” His grin quickly fades. “God, I didn’t mean to just start….walking with you. Sorry, shit. You must think I’m some sort of-”
“You can walk with me,” she bites down on another smile. Because it’s the most she’s smiled in weeks and it feels foreign to her. “It’s fine.”
“You sure?”
“Yeah,” she peeks sideways at him. “As long as we don’t have to start running,” she adds with a laugh.
His smile returns. And they keep waking. The rain starts to die down a bit, but Amelia questions whether she’s imagined that. She can see the rain. And maybe she can hear it, too. But she can’t really feel it. Her focus has shifted.
“I’m Amelia, by the way.”
“Amelia?” He repeats her name, and there’s a spark of interest in his inflection, like he’s really doing his best to store that information.
She nods.
They reach north hall. The rain has come to a complete halt, and Amelia thinks it would almost feel sunny, if the sun hadn’t already set.
“It’s nice to meet you, Amelia. I’m Link.”

You Found Me: One Shot
Summary: Bucky Barnes always came home to you. What happens when he doesn't? Worse than that...what happens when he forgets you existed?
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Reader
Warnings: A bit of angst and then the squishiest fluff. Mama likes her happy endings, y’all ;)
A/N: I wrote this in an hour and i have no idea where this idea came from lol enjoy! <3
Tumblr media
The metal of the chair was as cold as the room. They liked to keep it cold to help him acclimate to being thawed out.
Again.
He sat with perfect posture and waited. What was he waiting for? He didn’t know. He never knew, he wasn’t the one in charge here.
“Soldat.”
He was greeted by a Doctor—at least he looked like a doctor...had the lab coat and everything.
The doctor held a folder out to the him. “Extraction. No witnesses. Eliminate as needed and return to base. Understood?”
Soldat nodded. “Understood.”
Tumblr media
He walked with a purpose. He walked like he knew where he was going; like he’d been here before.
The streets were flooded with people. Why wouldn’t they be? It was high-noon on a warm autumn day in New York City.
He didn’t have to look unassuming here, the people didn’t care. He liked that about this place, no one bothered anyone else unless they had a good reason.
And even then, they often didn’t.
About two blocks from the park, the wind shifted, blowing East. Normal, expected; especially with the seasons changing. On his next inhale, he caught the scent of something mouthwatering. Something savory—no, sweet. Buttery too, something he could practically taste on his tongue. Something almost familiar.
He ignored it though, of course he did. His mind and body were on autopilot at this point. Sanction. Extract. Eliminate if necessary.
He looked at the sign that showed the location he was in the park, he was here. Right on to of it—on top of her.
Scanning the field, he spotted her immediately. She was stood on the bridge above the tunnel connecting the two sides of the park. Not an easy escape if she tried it. She’d hit water if she ran left, and the busy New York streets if she ran right.
She’s never going to see it coming...see him.
He rounded the bridge on the city side. If she ran, he’d rather the water be an ally in eliminating the target, instead of the messiness of a car.
Her back was to him while she talked on the phone. She was so unassuming, smiling even, then she laughed.
He froze. Soldat froze. It was like the air had been snatched from his lungs. She laughed again, and suddenly time stood still. His brain fogged with different images. All accompanied by that sound, by that laugh.
He stumbled. The Winter Soldier actually stumbled. “No.” He groaned, closing his eyes tightly and rubbing them with his palms. Another image, accompanied by a feeling. Warmth, elation, safety. Still faceless, but all real and true.
“I’m gonna go, I’ll see you tonight.” He heard her say into the phone. “I love you.”
His heart pounded. Loud, rhythmic thumping in his chest and ears. Another picture floats into his mind...
It’s you.
It comes in flashes at first, like the shuttering of an old film. In a bed, with him. You’re saying the exact same words while you stroke his beard. “I love you, Bucky. I love you.”
Bucky? Who the hell is Bucky? He thinks.
He’s a few steps from you now, four at most. Then he smells something else, something he recognizes immediately—it’s you.
Another chord struck within him, another memory invading the assassins mind.
“James, I cant do this anymore! You leave for days on end, and I never know if I’ll see you again.” You cried.
“Sugar, I’ll always come home to you. I promise.” He reaches for you and pulled you in closed, inhaling your scent.
“What if you don’t? What if they find you?” Tears coat your cheeks.
He shook his head, “No one can keep me from you. No one, I’ll always come back, I’ll always find you.”
You sniffle agains his chest, tightening your grip on him like you’re afraid he’ll float away. “I don’t want to lose you.”
“You won’t, doll. You won’t.”
He shakes his head. “Stop it.” He curses to himself, but it was too late. You’d heard him.
It’s was like everything moved in slow motion. You turned around, eyes wide, like you were staring at a ghost.
“J-J...Bucky?” You call, almost in disbelief at your own words.
He was frozen, you—whoever you were, weren’t supposed to know him. He doesn’t even know himself, why would you?
“No.” He said roughly.
You shook your head and looked down. “They got you. They got you and now you’re here for me.”
“Yes.” What more could he say?
You look back to him, piercing eyes boring into his, “Will it hurt?”
The soldier looked confused, “Will what hurt?” He asks.
You sniffled, “When you kill me, James.”
A punch to the gut. That’s what your words felt like...why? Why did they feel this way? You were a target, a mission. Just another mission.
He swallowed hard. “No.”
And he means it. It will be quick, he’d make sure of it. You weren’t made for suffering, and by the circles under your eyes, you’d been suffering enough.
You nod, accepting your fate, and close your eyes. Bucky takes a step towards you.
“Now, Tony! Now!” You shout, eyes still closed.
Before he knew what was happening, he was grabbing at the sharp pain stinging in his neck.
The last thing he saw was your face, then the world went black.
Tumblr media
The beeping wakes him.
Looking down, Bucky sees the wires and tubes connected to the machine next to him.
A hospital. He thinks.
Scooting back, he groans as the muscles that surely haven’t been used for a while protest, and ache.
He tossed his head back against the pillow.
Remember. Remember something...anything.
“You’re awake.”
The melody of your voice brings an immediate calm to him. He sits up, ignoring the pain.
“Relax, you must be hurting. Here,” you held out the cup, “Drink this, it’ll help.”
He looked from you to the mug for a moment, hesitating.
You sigh, putting it in his nightstand, then placing a hand over his. “You’re safe here, Bucky. I promise.”
And he believes you.
“Wh-where am I?” He asks, a voice sounding like he’s swallowed gravel.
You once again hand him the mug, and he sips it eagerly. Tea. He thought. I like tea.
“You’re at a facility in Upstate New York.” You said calmly.
“Why...how did I get here?” He rubbed his eyes with his free hand.
“You needed help. You were being held hostage by HYDRA. Tony...Tony Stark helped me find you. He helped me save you, Buck.”
Stark. Stark. Stark...Howard Stark. December...cold. A crash, the accident...the blood.
“No one here is going to hurt you. They’re helping you, I swear it. They’ve been helping me look for you for the last five years, they never stopped.” Your voice was shaking now. “Dr. Banner developed something, you’ve been sedated for about a week. He’s hoping it will fill the gaps in your memory. A serum of sorts.”
Great. Bucky thinks, Just what I need, another serum.
“And you?” He asked softly, not wanting to upset you more. “Who are you?”
You let out a defeated sigh, he watched you, seeing the pain on your face. Before you could speak, he cut you off.
“I know you, or...my mind knows you. My body. I have all these memories filled with your face. Who are you...to me?”
You look a bit more relieved. “I...I’m...it’s hard to explain—“
James put his hand over yours this time. “Try me, Doll.”
Doll. It came out so naturally, and without inhibitions that it didn’t take a brainiac to know who you were. Not wholly, but he felt it.
He saw the goosebumps on your skin, “I’ve loved you forever, James Buchanan Barnes. There was a time you loved me, too.”
Bucky felt a warmth spread through his chest. It climbed his throat, invading his brain and bursting into fireworks of memories. All vivid and sparkling and bright.
Your name comes out as a whisper at first; so soft you truly didn’t know if you’d imagined it.
You nod frantically. “Yes. Yes, that’s me, baby. That’s me.” You sit next to him, and cup his face in your hands.
He closed his eyes tightly, willing the information to show up.
“Sokovia...they got me in Sokovia. I didn’t...I didn’t keep my promise.” James felt his throat tighten.
“Wh-what promise?” You asked. He opened his eyes and saw the tears pooling in yours.
“I didn’t come home to you. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry, Sugar.” James cried. For the first time in years, he was crying...feeling.
He knew he loved you. That much was clear. His mind was still in shambles and he knew that too.
“Yes you did. You found me again, I’ve been on HYDRA’s radar for years trying to get them to send you after me. I knew you were coming for me, so I had everything on standby waiting to get you out of there.” You were proud of yourself, he heard it in your voice. Hell, he was proud of you too.
Bucky sniffled, “My girl took down HYDRA. Damn, I’m a lucky son of a bitch.” He laughed.
Your hand cupped his cheek, the warms bringing so much comfort to him. “I love you, Buck.”
Bucky cupped your face in return, “I love you, too.”
He was nervous, but he leaned in anyway. The kiss was soft and gentle. The feeling of the two of you melding into one was more familiar than anything.
When you pulled away, Bucky kissed your closed eyes. Something he remembers doing a thousand times before.
“What do we do now?” He asked.
“Steve’s on his way. I have a feeling we’re going on a bit of a trip.” You say smiling.
Bucky smiles, grateful he remembers Steve. “A trip? Where to, Doll?”
You smirk and kiss his nose. “To see another old friend of yours—in Wakanda.”

Sun-kissed
Fandom: Tears of Themis Pairing(s): Artem Wing x Laura (OC), Marius von Hagen x Kisa Ryujin (OC) Word Count: ca. 1900 Warnings: fluff, slow-burn, slight angst Author’s Notes: A little something for my dearest @iluvsexyvoltageguys and a big thank you to the lovely @janumun for proofreading <3
Every normal person would enjoy a day at the beach, especially on a day like this. It was warm, but not uncomfortably so, a soft breeze blowing across the rarely-visited beach that was only a 30 minute car-ride from Stellis.
‘How did we end up here again...?’, Artem thought, not as happy as an overworked top attorney on his day off should be.  “Oi, Mister attorney, don’t you think it’s time to take off that shirt? I’m starting to sweat just looking at you!” Right, at was the company, or rather, the dark-haired brat who was lounging on the towel next to him, rummaging through his bag. “Or do you wanna miss the chance of asking Laura to put sunscreen on you?”, Artem could feel Marius’ smirk, even though he wasn’t directly looking at him.
Dismissing the question with an annoyed ‘tch’, he turned his gaze towards said woman - Laura. His new subordinate whom he had hired a few weeks ago, and whom he was planning to promote soon. Not only at Themis, but there was the pending decision of whether he would offer her to join NXX; a decision that was not to be taken lightly, however, the more he got to know her, the more confident he grew that she would make an excellent addition to the team. Beside her there was another girl that Luke was keeping an eye on, someone in his Martial Arts Club apparently, who was to meet Vyn in a couple of days for her assessment.
Laura and her best friend and roommate Kisa were leaning on the counter of the beach bar, waiting for their orders. Only when Laura turned around and gave Artem a soft smile did he realize that he had been staring at her. “Heh, the tips of your ears are red. Did you already get sunburned or is there...”, Marius shifted his gaze to Laura “...Maybe a different reason?” “Why would I even talk to you about this?” “Aw, come on, don’t be so harsh! Even if I tease you about it, I do think you and Laura would make a great couple. But you gotta do something if you want something to happen.”, Marius patted Artems shoulder in a sympathetic way, which only elicited a raised eyebrow from the dark-haired man. “Just watch, I’ll help! Hey Laura!”
The two women were returning, four drinks in their hands. Kisa put her beer in the small cooling box before darting into the ocean and a quick ‘see ya later!’. “What’s up?”, Laura plopped down next to Artem, the drink making a ‘zish’ when she opened it. Cocktails in a can, best invention ever. “Artem is refusing to apply sunscreen, he thinks that shirt is enough protection. Will you please talk some sense into him?”, Laura didn’t pay attention to the shit-eating grin that now grazed Marius’ handsome face, but turned to her superior with what could almost be interpreted as an angry look. “Okay look, this is not debatable, you have such nice skin, and we aren’t even in the shadows right now. Turn around and let me do your back.” “It’s really fine, I-” “Don’t argue with me.”, Laura answered in a manner that left no room for discussion. “Take off your shirt.” A cheeky whistle came from Marius’ direction, earning him nothing but a glare from Artem, who now said with his back towards Laura in nothing but his swimming trunks.
“Is that the bartender who’s in the water with Kisa?”, Artem asked aloud and Laura looked at the ocean. “Oh him! Yea, they have actually met before! He lives nearby, so-”, before she could finish her sentence Marius was already on his way towards the water and after a few moments the raven-haired man starts to chuckle, the corners of his sapphire eyes crinkling “...He is so easy to read when it comes to her.” “I think he’d be just right for her, but…” “But what?” “Nothing. I’m sorry, that’s not for me to tell. Your presence just makes me feel at ease you know.” Artem stiffened at her words that came so naturally, thankful that she couldn’t see his face, absolutely certain that a deep blush colored his cheeks. No one has ever said this to him, and to hear them from her was… He couldn’t handle it at the moment.
“Okay, let me put sunscreen on you now.”, Artem heard the bottle spraying, and a moment later he felt her cool hands on his back. He shivered at the contact, electricity racing through his body as her hands started to spread the sunscreen. A small gasp escaping him, too quiet for Laura to hear. Thankfully. “Heh, sorry that must have been a bit cold.” “That’s not-... It’s fine, uhm… thank you.”, Mustering every bit of self-control that he had, he managed to stay still while Laura massaged the sunscreen into his skin. It was all good as long as it was only his back. It was fine. He could survive this. He had amazing self-control, surely he could handle a few seconds.
He was wrong. And he knew when the brunette's hands moved downwards. applying the sunscreen on his sides, her nails accidentally scraping his skin. “Haahh-!”. his entire body jerked up “Are you ticklish?”, Laura asked, her voice laced with a hint of amusement. “Uhm- Yes, please don’t… touch me there.”, at this point he didn’t know whether he wanted this moment to end as quickly as possible or to last for eternity. What Artem couldn’t see was Laura's own expression, which by far not as relaxed as the tone of her voice would suggest; her hands lingering just a few seconds longer, when she disengaged her action.
“There, all done!”, she shifted awkwardly to try and hide her face “Thank you… Uhm, do you want me to do yours too?”, Artem had no idea how he even mustered the courage to ask this question, but now there was no taking it back. “Uhm-... Yes, that would be nice. Hold on, let me unhook the clasp!” ‘Oh no…’, Artem swallowed audibly when the woman of his dreams positioned herself in front of him, presenting her beautiful, slender back only for his eyes to see. How long has he been wanting to touch her, explore every inch of her skin, kiss her and drown in her… All these urges, completely unexplored for the 29-year old man, overcame him like waves crashing at the shore. Further and further, beautifully gentle but powerful at the same time. Steady, almost predictable, though their first encounter and everything that followed was anything but. All the late-night talks about work, accompanied by the scent of strong coffee and the smile that at some point he started longing to see every single day. And now, in the golden light of the warm sun, she was before him and it took everything in him to not get too close. The last thing he wanted was to make her uncomfortable. To do something she didn’t want. Go too far. After all, he didn’t know how she felt about him… But heavens, how would he ever know if he didn’t- Hold up, was he about to follow that brats advice!?
“Artem, are you okay?”, Laura’s voice snapped him out of it. “Huh? Oh, yes, sorry…”, Artem started to spray sunscreen on her, as his breathing became just a bit more unsteady with each passing moment. He took a deep breath before his hands touched her skin, and his own burned. Forcing himself to keep his composure, he started to rub the lotion across her back, feeling a knot of arousal in his… nether regions. ‘You idiot, show her you like her, do SOMETHING!’, his inner devil yelled at him as he fought his primal instincts to simply envelop her from behind and let his hands do the rest. He compromised on something else, as his face inched closer towards her neck. Closer and closer. If minutes or mere seconds passed, Artem couldn’t tell, he was pulled towards her like a magnet. Hot breath on her skin let goosebumps spread over Laura’s body, her breath quickening, resulting in a high-pitched moan when Artem’s soft, curious lips finally connected with her skin. The sensations flooded his mind, leaving him in nothing but a haze as he enjoyed the taste of her, a mix of sunscreen, sweat and something that was her very own. Whiffs of the scent of her shampoo cocooned his nostrils; her skin was so warm, so incredibly soft. Completely out of his own control his hands gently grabbed her shoulders before gently caressing down her arms. “Artem-!”, Laura was barely able to contain her excitement, a sharp intake of breath disrupting Artem. “Oh my… I’m- I’m so sorry, I don’t know what came over me, but-” “No! I mean… I like it. Don’t… don’t stop there, please… I’ve wanted this for much longer than you think.” Spurred on by her raw honesty, her vulnerability in that moment, Artem turned her around, her gaze directly meeting his. Her cheeks rosé, her lips parted and her hazel eyes full of yearning stole all reason that was left in him. Drinking in the sight of her, this picture-perfect moment in which his wishful thinking became reality, he engraved it into his mind, so that it would never leave him. A few moments passed before Artem gently took her hands in his, his thumb stroking her soft skin. “Laura, I… I’m not really good at this, and I’ve been thinking about when, or even if to tell you but-... I can’t seem to keep my wits around you.” “You’re not the only one who feels that way...”, the shade of her rosé cheeks growing darker, Laura turned her gaze from him, a shyness very atypical for her usual demeanor. “Look at me… I… I want to be with you. Will you let me?” The young woman smiled at the man in front of her, squeezing his trembling hands. She lightly lifted herself up to be on his eye-level and within a moment their lips connected for the first time.
Artem’s eyes widened, but after a second or two he regained his composure just enough to react, leaning into the kiss. It was a chaste, gentle kiss, full of the unspoken feelings that have accumulated over the past few weeks and months, threatening to overwhelm them both. But this was not the time. Artem smiled into the kiss before he slowly disengaged, pressing his forehead to hers, as they both savoured this moment as the sun started to set. Meanwhile in the ocean. “My god… did you just see that!?”, Kisa squealed with excitement, full on having witnessed their kiss. “Was about time, don’t you think?”, Marius grinned, knowing, or rather thinking that this was his victory. “Brings back memories, huh?” Kisa raised her eyebrow at the statement. A memory she forced herself to forget, of a lonely night in a new city, where she met a handsome stranger at an art gallery, both intoxicated by one another, fitting together like two pieces of a whole. One night… a single, unforgettable night. “I told you already… I don’t remember.”, she lied.

"Ready?"- Hwang Hyunjin
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
word count: 1.575k
song: Starlight - Jai Wolf, Mr Gabriel
warnings: brief mention of alcohol, other than that it's just more fluff.
“Shall we ditch this hideous party?” Such cliché words escaped the plumpness of his rosy lips one at a time, almost in slow motion, and if this was a movie then the camera would have zoomed in on his breathtaking face.
“Nothing can be worse than this.” If you could etch just one image into your memory for the rest of your life then it would be the smile tugging up at the cushion of flesh that must feel unbelievably soft under the pads of your fingers.
He stood up and offered you his hand which you took in the blink of an eye. Once on your feet he started walking through the crowd, the material of his denim jacket brushing the edge of your palm, the ring on his fingers contrasting the warmth of his hand with its coolness.
Stranger’s bodies pressed against your sides but nothing seemed to matter once the door appeared on your sight, right in front of the tall man that guided you carefully into a successful escape.
The night air welcomed the both of you, making you shiver at the lack of fabric covering your arms. Inside the party there was no need for extra layers of fabric but now outside you started to understand the reason for your companion's jacket.
Another smile grazed his lips, this time much smaller and cunning that before. Without saying a word he took his jacket off and handed it to you, completely nonchalant.
He let go of your hand and waited for you to put the jacket on as he reached to tie half of his hair into a small bun with the black hair tie around his wrist that you had only noticed now. Mesmerizing was left short at the sight of his profile being accentuated by the new hairstyle.
The denim was not cold against your arms once you wore it, on it you felt the warmth of his hand all over again making you shiver. Funny how someone you barely knew could have such an effect on you.
“Ready?” he asked and you meant to reply with For what? but you quickly stopped yourself and nodded at him.
You could see hesitation lingering in his eyes when almost instinctively he had reached to hold your hand once again so you helped him by intertwining your fingers with his. You might as well, if you were already escaping with him to god knows where there was no point in playing pretend, as if you hadn’t been dying to hold his hand since the first time you heard him laugh.
Satisfaction crept up your face as you noticed the flustered state that the faint coat of coral on his cheeks let through; at least you weren’t the only one enjoying.
“Where are we going?” you asked after you were seemingly far from the house that seemed to contain the most dreadfully drunk ambient you had ever witnessed.
He didn’t answer and instead approached a slightly old, black Versa whose lights immediately blinked when he stuffed his free hand in his pocket, taking out a pair of car keys. And here you were thinking that you would walk all the way to this unknown location.
Moving quickly he opened the door for you and reluctantly let go of your hand. After closing your door he got on his side of the car and in no time he was driving on the empty streets.
The clock on the car said it was 2 am, you couldn’t believe you had spent so much time inside the dull party that had brought you the boy whose eyes shone like stars. You wouldn’t complain much because the night had in fact brought you something more promising that the red cup you had been holding an hour before.
The city that you knew to be a lively one during the day was almost completely deserted as he drove calmly, eyes never leaving the road even as you shamelessly stared at him before averting your gaze at the city.
After receiving an approving hum from him you had rolled down your window and turned the faint music slightly louder. The air was way more ruthless as the speed concentrated it against your skin but it felt like freedom, the weird one that can only be gained at a car in the most ungodly hours of the night.
Giggles escaped your lips at the ecstatic euphoria that burned on your chest. There was nowhere you would rather be than there in the front seat of his car with worries long forgotten at the party he had rescued you from.
Humming the songs playing on the radio seemed to be your new way of communicating with him because that’s all you did the rest of the ride until the car slowly came to a halt.
He had brought you somewhere you could perfectly appreciate the whole city sprawled senselessly everywhere, just like the stars covering the night sky. Breathtaking fell short when it came to describing the scene unfolding in front of you; having been there a million times you thought there was nothing that could add to the landscape but now you knew you were wrong.
He opened your door and once again offered you his hand to help you get out of the car or perhaps as an excuse to relish on the warmth of your skin against his for a second more. The night air greeted you once again, this time tasting like liveliness and freedom mixing violently with the slight taste of alcohol at the back of your mouth.
It was the boy beside you whose touch was long gone and the feeling that the night was stretching out infinitely in front of your eyes that made everything feel somewhat perfect and unrealistic.
Curious glances followed him as he walked to his car, half of his body entering and leaving his long legs for you to watch. Struggling slightly he finally managed to turn up the volume of the radio to what you believe had to be at least near full intensity, a soft melody filling your ears.
When he exited the car he left the door ajar and walked towards you with a pleased smile as if praising himself for the good job he was doing. He held one of his hands out to you and you didn’t hesitate to throw him a questioning look before accepting his inviting fingers.
He pulled you close, the warmth of his body now seeping in on you as his hand found its way right above your waist. “You said you wanted to dance,” he simply cooed before starting to do just what he said.
That’s right, upon getting more comfortable with him you could remember saying I wish I could dance but the music here is dreadful. And it made your heart warm that he had paid so much attention to the words that you had carelessly shared with him.
His feet moved carefully guiding you, the air unknowingly pushing your head softly to finally rest on his shoulder. Slowly but steadily melting into him and the small details that grazed his existence, like the small hairs that had escaped his bun and freely hung out framing his forehead, the tiny and faint mole under his eye, the way his touch was intoxicating, the scent of his body wash that betrayed one important detail about him, he didn’t wear any cologne.
The song was followed by another one and then one more that kept the soft pace that presented the perfect excuse not to pull away from each other; you had to give it to him, this was way better than the party and the merit of having found a radio station with such soft music and not much interruptions had to be a talent you were eager to learn from him if time allowed it.
Once the music finally subsided and a man’s voice cut through the air saying the slogan of his radio station you let a giggle slip past your lips and your head to move away from his shoulder to face him.
Behind him stars seemed to shine ten times brighter and more charming, again, if this was a movie then he would lean in to kiss you, sealing like that the adventure he had brought you in.
It was your life so it could be your own movie; you closed the gap between the both of you when you crashed your lips against his, no warning needed for him to welcome you with content.
His lips were as soft as you had imagined, warm beyond comprehension, and addictive in a way that words could never describe. Holding you by the waist he brought you a bit closer to him just to take in more of your scent, a bit more of your warmth even if for just a second.
Your fingers played with the slightly wavy ends of his black hair at the same time he smiled against your mouth. When he pulled away you finally understood his question from before and you were glad that you had accepted because you were ready for this, for him so beautiful under the stars and the city witnessing your 3 am high.
Sometimes it just took a hideous party and a charming boy to have a picture perfect adventure under the veil of the sky.

If I die before I wake
tarlos || 5k || ao3
Prompt: “stay alive, please.” + “it hurts.”
---
Carlos responds to an accident scene that threatens to take everything away from him.
-------
“So, what do you think?”
Carlos looked at his partner, eyebrow raised, “What do I think about going on a double date?”
“Yeah.”
“Me and TK, with you and…”
“Alanna,” Mya provided.
“Right, Alanna. Who you have been on...2 dates with?”
“Three, Reyes. Three dates.”
“Uh-huh.”
Mya shot him a glare, “What?”
“I think you’re up to something, Esquilin.”
“What could I possibly be up to?”
“I don’t know, but I have known you long enough to know that you are usually up to something.”
“You,” Mya said with an accusatory finger pointed at her partner, “are too suspicious, Reyes.”
“Mya,” Carlos said firmly, turning to face her, “what possible reason could you have for wanting to take someone you have been on 3 dates with for a double date with a couple that has been together over a year and knows you so well? There’s an ulterior motive here somewhere and I’m just wondering what it is.”
There is silence in their squad car for several moments as Mya seems to consider how best to answer. But the same moment she opened her mouth, their radio chirped to life. Mya seemed to deflate in relief and Carlos studied her for a moment before reaching for the radio, “This is Officer Reyes.”
“Car 142 respond to a vehicular accident, intersection of S 1st and Cumberland. Be advised that witnesses say one of the involved drivers is likely under the influence.”
Carlos shared a grim look with Mya, who flipped on the lightbar and headed in the direction of the accident scene, “10-4 dispatch, car 142 en route.” He replaced the radio and turned to Mya, “we’re finishing this discussion later.”
“Whatever you say, partner.”
“I mean it, Mya.”
“So an accident, think you’ll get to see your better half?”
“You can try and change the subject all you want but I’m not going to forget.”
She raised an eyebrow at him briefly before turning her gaze back to the road and he rolled his eyes, “No, he’s not working tonight. He actually should be at my place by now, he was going to try to make dinner.”
“Did you check to make sure the fire extinguisher was full?”
“And added a second one.”
She laughed, but any humor faded at the sight of the accident scene as they turned the corner.
Carlos felt dread building in his gut as Mya lost any hint of the playful manner of just a second ago, “Shit,” she said instead, voice low as she slowed their car to a stop at the edge of the scene.
There was a car pinned to the telephone pole on the corner of the intersection. The front end looked relatively fine but the back was a mess. It looked like the other vehicle had come through the intersection at high speed, striking the back of the other car and pinning it to the pole. Carlos grimaced as he climbed out of the cruiser and got a better look. Hopefully no one had been in the backseat; they would have to be lucky to have survived that.
And the driver of the other car was standing outside his car looking perfectly fine if a bit intoxicated, of course.
He turned to Mya as she met him outside their car, “Do you want the drunk or the victim?”
“You took the drunk last time so I guess it’s my turn.”
“Let me know if you need me.”
“Please,” she scoffed, “I can handle this dude.”
He shook his head fondly as she rolled her eyes and they jogged off in their separate directions. He reached the driver’s window and leaned in, giving the man a quick once over.
“Sir,” he asked, “are you hurt anywhere?”
The driver shook his head forcefully, “I’m fine, just some cuts and bruises. My passenger though, I’m an uber driver…”
Carlos felt the dread building as his fears were confirmed.
“Okay sir sit tight, I’m going to go around and see if I can get a better look. The fire department should be here soon and they’ll get you out real quick.”
The driver nodded and Carlos gave him a quick, small smile before he headed to the rear window, carefully brushing glass shards out of the way so he could lean in. He was about to ask the same questions, but the sight before him stole the words and his breath from him.
There was someone in the backseat but it wasn’t just anyone. It was a very familiar someone in a familiar yellow hoodie.
“TK?” he asked, voice breaking. He got no response. He tugged on the door desperately but couldn’t get it to budge.
He swallowed before trying again, “Ty? Can you hear me?”
There were a million sounds surrounding him and not one of them mattered. The only one that did matter, the only voice he needed to hear, stayed silent. He couldn’t even get close enough to check for a pulse even as his heart clenched at the very thought of needing to. He knew he had been staring for too long, he needed to keep moving. He needed to do something, anything. He needed to help TK.
He couldn’t lose him — not now, not ever.
With effort, he pulled his gaze away and glanced around. Mya had cuffed the other driver and was loading him into the back of the cruiser. He called out to her, hoping she didn’t notice the change in his voice. Her eyes found him and even from a distance the despair in his expression must have been clear because her expression shifted and she hurried over.
“Carlos, what—”
But he stepped aside so she could see into the car, clutching the roof of the car for support. She took a look inside and he could pinpoint the moment she identified the trapped figure. She turned to him; expression grim and voice soft, “Carlos…”
“We need to get to him,” he said again, hoping his voice was steadier than it sounded to his own ears, “I couldn’t get the door open.”
“Okay,” Mya said calmly, “we’ll try it together. I’ll use the handle, you grab the doorframe. On 3, we pull.”
Carlos nodded and followed her instructions, putting everything he had into it. Finally, after a few tries, the door gave and they were able to wrench it open. Carlos was in the car in a flash, disregarding the shattered glass crunching beneath him as he moved towards TK, reaching for his neck, feeling for a pulse.
Please don’t let him be dead, please.
The thought was repeated like a mantra in his head, over and over again like a desperate prayer.
The moments it took to find the right spot, for him to feel the tell-tale thrum of life in the familiar neck before him seemed to last forever but eventually — finally — he felt it. A pulse; strong and steady.
He released the breath he had been holding and turned to Mya, “he’s alive, pulse is steady.”
The relief evident on his partner’s face was nearly as palpable as his own, “Okay. See if you can wake him up and maybe give him a once over, I’ll go handle the rest of the scene and notify whatever crew shows up. Just stay with him.”
“Are you…”
“Carlos,” she interrupted him, voice firm and leaving no room for argument, “stay with him. He needs you and I can handle the rest on my own.”
He gave her a grateful smile that she returned before squeezing his arm and disappearing back into the chaos of the scene.
Carlos turned back to the crumpled figure beside him. He reached out a tender hand, carefully running it through TK’s hair, looking for any sign of a head injury. His hand found something wet on the side of his head closest to the door and he pulled it away to find blood. He moved closer, careful not to jostle TK any more than necessary, and located the source; a long but relatively shallow laceration on the side of his head.
“How do you keep getting yourself into these situations, babe?” Carlos asked quietly, more to himself than anything else.
“Is he going to be okay?”
Carlos nearly jumped — he had quite forgotten about the driver in the face of what he had found in the backseat. He looked back over at the driver who had managed to twist enough to get a better look at TK’s predicament. Carlos shrugged but pulled his professionalism back over his countenance, “it’s hard to say with him trapped right now. The fact that he’s not conscious isn’t a good sign, but the way he’s trapped it’s too hard to see what might be wrong. I’m just hoping AFD gets here soon.”
The driver nodded before studying Carlos, “You know him, don’t you?”
Carlos gave him a startled look and the driver simply rolled his eyes, “please, I’ve been stuck in this car. I can hear you back there.”
“Yeah, I do.”
“Are you his boyfriend?”
Carlos looked up sharply, never sure how to respond to that. The driver raised his hands in placation, “No judgment, it’s just if you are, he was talking about you right before we crashed.”
Carlos deflated, turning back to TK, “he was?”
“Yeah, said he wanted to surprise you by making a dinner that was actually edible.”
Carlos laughed at that, despite everything, “he’s a man of many talents but unfortunately, I don’t think cooking will ever be one of them.”
“Seems like he likes you a whole lot too,” the driver noted, watching as Carlos ran a hand through TK’s hair.
“That’s good,” Carlos said softly, “because I like him a whole lot too.”
Any further conversation was interrupted by TK stirring. Carlos waited with bated breath, watching him anxiously as he slowly blinked open his eyes. “TK?” he asked softly.
“Carlos?” The word was slurred and quiet, but it was in TK’s voice and Carlos was certain he had never heard anything more beautiful.
“Yeah Ty, I’m here. Can you tell me what hurts?”
TK tried to push himself up but abruptly fell back against the window with a hiss of pain, “Everything?”
Carlos smiles sympathetically, “I believe you, but anything that hurts more than the rest?”
TK considered for a bit before answering, “my head, and my ribs.” He prodded a bit at his chest before wincing, “definitely a few either broken or fractured on the right side.”
Carlos watched as TK placed a hand on his chest as he took a breath, wincing with pain and then letting out a breathy curse. He met Carlos’s anxious expression and explained, “might be flail chest too.”
“Flail chest?”
“When part of the rib cage — usually 3 or more ribs — breaks and becomes detached from the rest of the chest wall.”
Carlos’s eyes widened, “That sounds bad.”
“It’s not ideal,” TK agreed, “but as long as I am careful not to jostle it too much I should be fine until we can get to a hospital, as long as that’s soon. Other than that I’m just kind of one giant bruise.”
“Well, Mya’s in charge so I am sure help will get here soon if she has anything to say about it.”
TK gave him a weak, strained smile before glancing around, “is everyone else okay?”
He looked towards the driver’s seat where the man in question smiled and gave a small wave, “I’m good, just trapped. Mostly worried about you, even more so since you said all that stuff. You a doctor? Med student?”
TK shook his head, “Firefighter.”
“Guess you’re pretty familiar with car accidents then, huh?”
“Yeah, but usually from the other side. I kind of prefer it that way.”
“Can’t say I blame you.”
TK smiled at him before turning back to Carlos, “what about the other driver?”
“He’s feeling no pain and has been escorted to the back of our squad car by Officer Esquilin.”
“Great,” TK deadpanned, “just my luck.”
“Yeah,” Carlos agreed with a sigh, “it kind of is, isn’t it?”
TK smiled at him and then closed his eyes as grimaced in pain, exhaling carefully. Carlos reached out a hand but let it fall, not sure where to touch the other man that would provide comfort and not more pain. Eventually, he opened his eyes and met Carlos’s gaze.
“It hurts,” he admitted, voice low and weak and Carlos’s heart ached to hear it. He reached out again, gently grasping the hand resting at his side and giving it a comforting squeeze, “I’m sure it does, but we’re going to get you out of here. I can hear the fire engine now.”
And not a moment too soon, he thought to himself as the familiar sound of a fire engine approaching cut through the evening.
Outside the car he could hear the flurry of activity as whichever crew had been called arrived and went about the process of gathering gear and getting set up. Carlos stayed by TK’s side the entire time, clasping his hand in his own, “just focus on me,” he told him, “help is on the way.”
He was so focused on TK he didn’t hear the approaching footsteps until they were directly behind him.
“Reyes?”
The voice is familiar but not one Carlos had been expecting to hear. He turned sharply to see Judd Ryder leaning into the backseat.
“Judd?”
“Yeah, we’re going to need you to get out so we can help them. We’ve got it from here.”
“Is the rest of the 126 team here?” he hoped desperately that they were not. As much as their presence would be a comfort and he knows they would move heaven and earth to help TK, it would be far kinder for them to never have to deal with this.
“No, I’m covering for a buddy at the 124. His wife just had a baby so a bunch of us took his shifts for the next few weeks. Still gonna need you to move, kid.”
Carlos swallowed, not sure how to break the news, but he was saved the trouble by TK tuning back into the conversation, “Judd? What’re you doing here?”
Though his voice was weak, it was undeniably TK and Judd froze. He looked at Carlos who shook his head. What was there to say? There was no explanation for this. Judd grimaced and turned his attention back to TK.
“Shit kid, you really got yourself into it this time, didn’t you? Just hold tight brother, we’re gonna get you out of there.”
“Kay,” it was weak, far weaker than it had been a minute ago, and it filled Carlos’s heart with dread.
Judd took a deep, wavering breath before meeting Carlos’s eyes one more time and pulling himself back out of the car, heading back to the captain to report.
“Hang tight Ty,” Carlos told him softly, “this is almost over, I promise.”
“I’m fine Carlos, I’m not worried.”
“You’re a liar, but thanks for trying.”
TK’s answering smile, strained as it was, lifted the slightest amount of pressure from his heart. Two members of the 124 came over to free the driver, who looked back at them before climbing out, “hang in there kid would ya? I’d hate to have ‘dead passenger’ on my record.”
“If I survive this I’ll give you a 5-star review.”
The driver laughed appreciatively before nodding to Carlos and following the firemen away from the scene. Now that there was no other civilian involved, all the focus turned to TK and doing whatever they could to get him out.
Judd appeared at the far edge of the window by TK, “still hanging in there kid?”
But TK didn’t respond, he was too focused on the flurry of activity outside the wrecked car, “wouldn’t it make more sense to approach from the other side so there would be more clearance between the car and the pole?”
“Hey, no backseat rescuing,” Judd chided, “you just relax and let us handle it. Besides, you’re concussed, you don’t know what you’re talking about.”
But even as he spoke he was studying the scene and he stepped away to speak with the young kid who was setting up the equipment. As Carlos watched the kid nodded and gathered his things before moving to the other end of the car. He glanced back at TK, who was grinning, “I was right, wasn’t I?”
Carlos chuckled fondly and shook his head, running his hand through TK’s hair again, “Judd’s right, you just need to focus on keeping still and letting us know if something doesn’t feel right when we get you moving. He’s got the rest of it under control, he’ll make sure things are done to the 126’s standards.”
No more than a few moments later Judd popped back up at the window, “They’re ready to get started and they want you out, Reyes.”
“I’m not going anywhere,” he said firmly, looking back down at TK, who was still clutching his hand like a lifeline.
“That’s what I told them,” Judd agreed, “so just do your best to stay out of the way. Last thing we need is two victims here.”
Carlos nodded and Judd turned to wave to one of the other firemen, who started up the jaws. It was a painstaking process, the car bent and twisted as it was, but eventually, they found the right spot and the door began to give. Carlos turned to smile at TK — they were one step closer to having him free — when he noticed that his face had gone pale.
“Judd!” he called out to the firefighter before reaching out to examine TK, to see if he could find the problem, “something’s wrong!”
He could hear shouting before the noise of the jaws stopped and Judd peered back into the window, expression tight. Carlos was still studying TK.
“Ty,” he asked, “can you tell me what’s wrong?”
TK shook his head but gestured at his chest before trying to take a gulp of air but only ending up with a grimace of pain for his efforts. Carlos realized what he was trying to say in an instant: he was having trouble breathing.
Judd cursed and leaned back out, calling for the paramedics. His eyes met Carlos’s even as he moved, “I think his lung is punctured, we’re going to need to do this quick and dirty now so we can get him out and get him intubated if need be.” He shifted his gaze down to TK, “this is not going to be pleasant brother, but we’re going to get you the help you need ASAP, alright?”
TK nodded at him and squeezed Carlos’s hand harder. Carlos swallowed and squeezed back, desperate to offer whatever comfort he could.
The next minute passed in a blur. Once they had found a gap they used it to wrench the door open as far as it would go before the paramedics approached to get him prepped and out, quickly but carefully. Carlos climbed out after them, able to step over the seat and console that had pinned TK in before, and joined them, hovering right at the edge; unwilling to get in the way, but unable to stray too far. Not when TK was hurt, not when it was like this.
As he hovered, he heard the paramedic captain curse. “It’s a punctured lung,” he confirmed as he pulled the stethoscope away and relayed instructions to his team, “must have happened when the door shifted, causing the ribs to move and hit the lung. Breath sounds are diminishing, we need to get him out of here fast.”
Everything after that was white noise to Carlos as he found an open space on the ground near TK’s head and kneeled, careful to keep out of the way. He saw one of the paramedics turn to him in the corner of his eye, likely intending to tell him to get lost, but Judd appeared at his side and shook his head.
Satisfied he wasn’t about to be forcibly removed with Judd standing sentry behind him, Carlos leaned down, moving closer to TK.
“Hang in there Ty, please. They’re going to get you help, you just need to hang on a little longer, I promise.”
TK’s eyes met his and though they were clouded in pain, there wasn’t any fear in them. As they held each other’s gaze TK slid his hand across the ground, closer to Carlos who grasped it with his own, intertwining their fingers and squeezing it tightly.
“It’s going to be okay,” he repeated but now it was less of a promise and more of a prayer.
TK smiled at him, soft and reassuring, but his eyes began to drift shut.
“No you don’t, stay with me Ty!” Carlos said desperately, the fear that he had been just barely keeping at bay rushing up to engulf him without a second thought. TK’s eyes opened again but Carlos could tell they wouldn’t stay open for long. He leaned closer, lips practically at TK’s ear, “Stay alive,” he begged, “please. I can’t lose you.”
“Breaths are fading,” the paramedic captain announced, “we need to move him now.”
Carlos watched with horror as TK’s eyes slid shut once more and didn’t reopen, no matter how much he pleaded. He watched as the paramedic team scooped him onto a gurney and whisked him to the ambulance, two of them working desperately on CPR as the other rushed around to the driver’s seat.
The ambulance pulled away and Carlos felt as if his very soul had gone with it. He was still here at the accident scene but couldn’t seem to ground himself. He glanced around, taking in all the bits and pieces of the commotion, but most of it just seemed like noise.
He saw Judd speaking to the 124 Captain before stepping to the side and pulling out his phone with a grim expression and somehow Carlos knew just who he was calling. He looked away to see Mya heading towards him, expression cautious.
“Carlos?” she asked, but he knew there was so much more hidden in the two syllables of his name. How are you and how is he and what happened all went unsaid between the two partners.
He didn’t have an answer to any of them, so he just shook his head. She nodded before reaching out her hand to place it gently on his arm, where she gave him a comforting squeeze.
“How about we drop Mr. Inebriated off to be processed and then I’ll get you to the hospital. I’ll call Sarge on the way, let her know.”
Carlos nodded. He knew Mya was worried for him, he knew he should find some way to reassure her, but he had nothing. He felt like a shell; a husk completely cleaned out by the panic and fear and dread that had weighed so heavily on him since he first saw TK in the car. He was drained and the only thing keeping him moving forward was the desperate hope and need for TK to be okay.
If TK was okay, then everything else would be fine.
-------------
Carlos looked up from his phone when a figure plopped into the chair across from him, “hi stranger.”
“It’s only been a week,” Carlos objected with a roll of his eyes.
“Yeah and I always get stuck with the weirdos when you’re out. Thank god it’s not often.” There was companionable silence between the two partners as Mya studied him before speaking, “how are you doing?”
“Me? I’m fine.”
“Why do I not believe that?”
Carlos sighed, “It’s been a lot,” he admitted, “and a very long week. But I’m okay, really.”
“I’ve been worried about you,” she admitted, “we all have been.”
Carlos opened his mouth to respond, but the arrival of another person interrupted the conversation.
“Sorry about that,” TK said as he settled back into the seat at Carlos’s side, sliding his phone back into his pocket, “my dad just wanted to check-in. He’s still not convinced I should be allowed to stand up, let alone leave the house.”
“I can’t say I blame him. You really had me worried there for a little bit.”
“Aw Mya, you do care.”
“That is a vicious rumor that I will deny at all costs.”
He laughed and she grinned at him before softening, “how are you feeling?”
“I’m good, really. A little sore and I won’t be running any marathons anytime soon, but fine. Like I keep telling this one,” he says, shooting a pointed look at Carlos, “and my dad.”
Mya shrugs, “I believe you, but I can’t say I blame them. It was pretty close there for a while. Only you could be on the verge of death and back on your feet a week later Strand, I swear.”
“It’s all the practice,” Carlos said dryly, causing Mya to laugh and TK to roll his eyes.
“Judd is talking about bubble wrap,” he tells Mya.
“And we looked into it. It would be pricey, but worth it,” Carlos declared.
“So Mya,” TK said, turning pointedly away from Carlos, who smirked, “who is this girl you are so insistent we meet?”
Carlos shook his head fondly at the change of subject but didn’t push, instead joining TK in looking at Mya intently.
Mya rolled her eyes at the pair of them before taking a sip of her coffee, “Her name is Alanna, and I just wanted to see how you guys got on with her.”
Now Carlos raised an eyebrow and gave her a calculating look, “that sounds like some commitment territory Esquilin, you must really like her.”
“I do,” Mya admitted, “I know we’ve only been on 4 dates so far, but we talk all the time and I just really enjoy being with her in a way I haven’t enjoyed being with anyone else. Plus, you know, other stuff.”
TK and Carlos shared a knowing look and a smile as Mya barreled on, “It just seems really fast so I guess I wanted a second opinion? And to see how she fits in with my friends.”
“We’re your friends?” TK asked with a grin.
“Unfortunately the closet ones I have.”
Now that the topic of Alanna had been broached, not even their usual banter seemed to bring out the playful side of Mya they were accustomed to. She kept biting her lip and tapping her fingers against her mug as she shot repeated glances at the door.
“What are you worried about?” TK asked her eventually.
“I’m not worried,” she responded quickly, to which TK only raised an eyebrow.
“You’re practically a poster child for anxiety at the moment trust me; it takes one to know one. What’s up?”
Mya was quiet for a few moments before she explained, “I like her a lot, but I can’t help but think that maybe we are rushing into things, that maybe we are moving too fast.”
“There’s no one ‘right way’ to start a relationship,” Carlos reminded her gently. “I mean, look at us — you know what a mess we were getting started. We didn’t do anything the way we ‘should have’ but I think we’re pretty solid, right?”
“If by solid you mean, ‘nauseatingly perfect,’ then yeah. You are.”
“Then if you like this girl and she likes you, it doesn’t matter if it seems too fast or how many dates you’ve been on, all that matters is that you care about each other and want to try and start something together.”
The look Carlos was giving Mya was sincere and she gave him a soft smile in return, reaching across the table to squeeze his hand in thanks. She looked to TK a moment later, “You know, you’re pretty lucky to have found this one. Even if he is my partner and I am therefore required to give him shit, he’s pretty great.”
TK turned to look at Carlos, who met his gaze with a matching smile.
“He is something, isn’t he?” he agreed.
Mya smiled at the pair of them, but before she could say anything something behind them caught her attention and her smile grew even wider.
“She’s here,” she told them, rising from her chair, “I’m going to go grab her and get her a drink. Play nice when she gets here, please?”
“As if we could ever do anything but.”
Mya rolled her eyes and swatted lightly at TK’s head as she walked by, heading towards the blonde woman with a warm smile just inside the doorway of the coffee shop.
“Can you believe that was us not too long ago?” TK asked as they watched Mya greet her date with a kiss on the cheek.
Carlos shook his head, “that was never really us. We didn't exactly go about this in the usual way. By the time we got to awkward dates with friends we already knew each other’s friends and each other. Kind of an interesting parallel though —  you were on medical leave then too.”
“Is that supposed to be a jab about my ‘danger magnetism’ Reyes?”
“It is. Interesting term, by the way. A TK Strand original?”
“A Judd Ryder one, patent pending.”
“Of course,” Carlos agreed with a nod. His teasing tone faded as he studied TK, reaching out to run a gentle hand across the still healing cut to the side of his head. The stitches had been removed a few days ago, but he knew with painful certainty that underneath TK’s button-up was another row of sutures, a souvenir from the surgery to piece the broken bits of his ribs back together. Soon these would fade just as the scar on his collarbone had and soon they would just be another reminder of what almost was; of the all-consuming fear that they might have lost this, that Carlos could have lost him.
“What are you thinking?” TK asked him softly, studying Carlos’s expression.
“How much trouble you are.”
“Is that so?”
“It is, but you’re worth it.”
TK’s face broke out into a wide and beaming grin, “Oh really?”
“Yeah,” Carlos agreed, “you’re worth everything to me.”

Chizuru Town - Killer Instinct
Yoooo, the MC has killed people before Cassell.
“Shouldn’t we hurry?” Even though it was clear that something serious was happening in this Chizuru town, Chu Zihang was only walking ‘somewhat briskly.’ not even a jog. You strolled with him, lightly petting the cat who was nestled tight in your arms. The air was still warm with early summer. The two of you looked like a boyfriend and girlfriend out for a stroll at night and wouldn’t have turned any heads. Were it not for the circumstances it might have been romantic. But your heart held no room for any sort of romantic feelings at the moment. You just wanted to feel safe.
“We need to save our energy. And I wanted to ask you. What’s your connection to the Lenin?”
You glance up at him. “I guess I do owe you an explanation don’t I?”
“Not really. Truthfully, I'm just curious. It pertains to the mission, but only Caesar needs to know. You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to.” His voice was quiet.
As you continue to walk, you suddenly notice that the sky seems brighter than normal. As your eyes adjusted to the darkness of the power outage in Chizuru, the stars had started to become visible in greater and greater numbers. Perhaps in an hour or so, the sky would start to appear like the one over your old home.
“Looking back, it was truly a dreadful place where I came from. But it was home. It was beautiful in a lot of ways. Life was hard, but that made any level of joy and happiness so secret and special.” Smiling faces float into your vision, one by one, like an old photo album.
“The Lenin came by to resupply the port every Christmas. We always looked forward to it.” Your steps slow to a crawl. “It’s just as Chisei said to you. The Lenin made a stop in a nameless port in Siberia after which it took the dragon from the port and the port was burned. That was the last time I saw the Lenin, until today.”
“Why was the port burned?”
“It wasn’t… just that the port was burned, Zihang. It was bombed. There were people shooting at us from helicopters.” You couldn’t keep the tremble out of your voice.
“The scarring then… you were shot. Was that when it happened?”
“Huh?”
“When you were hurt. I saw the scars. It looked like you were hit by a high powered weapon. A wound that should have been fatal.”
“I wasn’t the only one shot that day… just the only one that survived.” You drop your face to fight the rising sorrow.
“The port wasn’t just burned then. It was specifically to kill the people there. Is that what you’re saying?”
You nod.
“Then I understand Caesar’s words to you much better then. It’s not just the fact of revenge… you’re a witness, MC. You have to live to tell the story. Don’t be so reckless with your life.” Chu Zihang said.
“Senpai, are you caring for me?” You say. “Hmm… what would Little Dragon Lady have to say about that?”
Zihang’s back straightened a little and you flinched internally. But then he relaxes. “I’m not sure if she’s the jealous type. You’re probably fine. After this mission is over, what will you do?”
“Assuming I’m still alive? I honestly… don’t know. I haven’t thought that far.”
“Understandable.” He suddenly stopped walking. A building was being surrounded by cars and motorcycles and from the rumble of the streets nearby, more were on the way. Vans blocked the windows of the first floor and men were making an effort to roll up the security door keeping them from the entrance.
“This way.”
“Is that the Internet Cafe?” You whisper as you’re ushered through the shadows and into a nearby alley. “I thought it was safe!”
He didn’t answer. He was watching people get out of the car with pistols and automatic weapons.
“On my signal… three… two … one…” He darts out of the alley way and sprints behind the people, approaching the building, hiding behind the backs of those in the rear. You follow as quickly as you can into the alley right beside the building. Sure enough there was a side entrance.
Zihang slices off the padlock holding the door closed and it swings open. But no one was guarding here. He motions you inside and you follow him into a narrow corridor. There was no light at all but the moon reflected off the rippling vinyl tile and the shining metal shelving. This seemed to be a storage and maintenance area. Zihang was moving silently and rapidly, not giving you any more instructions. He suddenly paused. There was a vending machine. It was off but Zihang could see what was inside. Clean packaged panties.
He pointed the sword at the glass and carved a near perfect circle with the tip. Your jaw drops. Was Zihang seriously this sort of pervert? The circle falls from the glass with a quiet tap. And he reached inside. “Here put these on.”
You’re stunned. How could he have known you weren’t wearing … your eyes widen. “You peeked?”
“I couldn’t help seeing when you kicked.” He tossed you the package.
With anyone else you would want to slap their face, and you scowled as you caught the package. “Can’t believe you.”
“It’s not like anything I haven’t seen before. Like I said, I saw your scars.”
“Stop talking!” You hiss. “And turn around. I’m not putting them on in front of you!”
Chu Zihang immediately turns around as you take off your shoes and set the cat down.  Kitty darts under the vending machine as soon as he’s on the floor. Your embarrassment isn’t warranted. It wasn’t his fault but still, you can’t believe he saw that! But when you’ve got one leg in, he starts to run without another word, down the hallway, leaving you behind! You rush to finish dressing and slip your shoes back on. When you get to the end of the hallway, you’re suddenly blinded by bright headlights. The intense glare stung your eyes, but not before you caught the dark silhouette of the person standing in front of the car.
You blinked rapidly to clear your vision. There he was standing, in a leather jacket. That broad back. That blond hair. Your heart leaps in your throat. Caesar! He was alive!
But before you can even call out to him, another shadow darted past him.
Your eyes had just adjusted to the brights of the car only for those lights to immediately go dark. The car's front end crashed to the ground, cut cleanly from the rest of the car. You were blinded by the lights and now you’re blinded by their after image. As you’re trying to blink that away, you hear the crash of metal blade on metal blade and then a sharp sounding gunshot! The sparks hit the car and ignited the fuel lines and once again the space was lit up this time by firelight!
Caesar was engaged in a furious battle with an assailant that was taking advantage of the rapid cycling of light and dark. He was moving quickly, parrying every attack. Caesar couldn’t slow down, flinch or make any mistakes. He was pinned.
Without a doubt, this was the elite fighter of this gang, meant to slow Caesar down. The lobby of the cafe was filled with people with guns but they were all watching this man attack Caesar, like it was some sort of ballet performance.
No one had noticed MC.
You crouch low, like a panther stalking in the dark, prowling around the chairs that were propped up on tables. You reach the man at the very end of the wall closest to you. His eyes were fixed on the fight. The speed of the two combatants was similar and their strength was almost equal. It was now a competition of swordmanship and endurance. Who could be perfect the longest. It was quite the nailbiter.
You leap up and wrap your legs around the unsuspecting young man’s waist and your arms around the man’s throat. By compressing the arteries in his neck, he’s unconscious in a mere second! Then you grab his gun. You immediately point the barrel of the gun up towards the ceiling and fire it at the sprinkler system! The combo of the smoke and the damage to the nozzle sets off the entire system and soon everything and everyone is drenched in the heaviest down pour they’ve ever experienced! The fire on the car goes out and the hall is full of shouting. They’re waving their guns and looking for the target! Caesar dove behind a thick heavy wood receptionist counter and you take the gun and follow him in the dark and wet confusion.
"Is it necessary to fight even now? Stop when you recognize me, okay?" Chu Zihang yelled.
"Damn, how can I be sure it's you? I can't see clearly! It wasn’t like I was practicing. If I stopped you would take my head off!" Caesar yelled.
"Internal conflicts will be resolved when we escape! Unity! Unity!" Lu Mingfei also yelled.
“Caesar! You’re okay! I’m so glad you’re okay!” You didn’t care what they were going on about. Your voice brought Caesar around to look at you. His smile was bright but then he looked appalled. He quickly took off his jacket and covered over your white button down that was soaked with sprinkler water and rendered completely transparent. Chu Zihang had given you a pair of panties but not a bra.
“Zihang! I thought I could trust you to take care of her and you’re letting her walk around like an exhibitionist!”
Lu Mingfei’s face was completely flushed. “I didn’t see! I didn’t see!”
“We have more important things to think about! Duck!” Caesar grabbed the back of your neck and forced you to the floor.
It would have been nice for everyone happily to come back from the dead, but there was no time for pleasantries and hugs ...... they heard the sound of short-barreled shotguns being loaded in droves.
The sound of gunfire was deafening, and the barrage of bullets came overwhelmingly.
"MP7! Lie down!" Caesar yelled.
Caesar knew the power of such rounds all too well. two seconds after he pulled you and Lu Mingfei down, dense bullet holes appeared in the wall opposite you. The MP7 penetrated the wood and still had energy to pierce the wall.
"You can't look at them as ordinary punks, they're here to kill us!" Chu Zihang lay on the ground, not daring to look up. "Very well prepared!"
“Don’t compliment them, Zihang!” You scream.
All you can think is that the people from Black Swan Bay had come back. They’ve come back to kill you. They’ve realized you’re a witness to Black Swan Bay and they’re here for you! You have a gun in your hands and you can fire back, but it was nothing compared to this level of pressure. They were cheering and reloading, confident in their win. You look up at Caesar. He was wearing a dangerous smile. The wood was turned to splinters but the marble countertop was still intact. He casually tipped the marble counter so it laid more on its edge.
 The boys screamed with excitement, but the screams were soon replaced by screams of pain as the dense lead bullets bounced off the marble countertop, then bounced off the floor and ceiling, covering the boys from the front, above, left and right.
Ancient chanting echoed in the darkness, as if ancient bells roared.
The air instantly heated up and the light was almost like a sunrise. The wall of crimson pushed past to cover the boys. The temperature around them rose to five or six hundred degrees in an instant. The boys felt as if they were staying in the sun. The hot air entered their bodies and could even burn their tracheas!
The black shadow stood where the crimson wall was born, black and red arcs of light flowing over the circular transparent interface around him.
The Spirit of Speech- Royal Fire, at the most conservative way to explode with instant heat, not enough that it would kill. The gangsters thought they were unarmed, and they were indeed unarmed, but Chu Zihang himself was a Vulcan cannon!
The high temperature quickly fell back, Caesar stepped on the blazing ground to pick up the short-barreled shotguns and bullet belts dropped by the mob. You hurry over to join him, looking like a child wearing his jacket. “Caesar… I’m so glad…” You were instantly reminded why you needed to stand behind him. While you were perfectly fine on your own, with just a shrug of his shoulders, Caesar had managed to get back at a room full of gloating loonies.
“Save your words.” He waved a hand. “We have to keep moving.” He kept his voice gentle but every muscle in his body was still taut. “Nice shooting by the way. I’ll put that in my report. Is there anything you can’t do?”
“Die?” You respond immediately with a cheeky grin.
Your answer stops him short and he regards you again with an intense stare. “Remind me to invite you to the Student Union when all this is over. Though I’m sure I won’t forget.”
The boys were badly burned on the surface of their bodies, and now the adrenaline was useless. They were rolling on the ground in pain, and Lu Mingfei rushed over to stomp on these little bastards. The youngest of these guys may only be 16 or 17 years old. The oldest is only in his early twenties, but human life in their eyes is not something that needs to be taken seriously, the problem is that they really chose the wrong opponent.
More importantly, they were too young to know who you were. They couldn’t be assassins targeting you over Black Swan.
“The high heels are really good for kicking people when they're down.” You quip with a little bit of irritation. Lu Mingfei had no clue how ridiculous he looked in that tight dress and heels kicking a guy with second degree burns. You seriously wonder how in the world he ever got on this team being so completely honorless? You wonder if you should tell Caesar what you know about his feelings toward his fiancee and then you realize that its likely that Caesar already knew and just didn’t care. It’s not like Lu Mingfei was any competition.
“Look down on me all you want. Hmph.” Mingfei shot back. “I’d said I’d stomp them and I won't’ be breaking that promise!”
You’re both interrupted by the roar of motorcycle engines coming closer and closer until the noise makes it impossible to hear! Bright headlights shone into the room and the black motorcycle veered around the broken car. The rider was holding a sword in the air. He opened his mouth and shouted a loud cry then dropped the sword forward.
The roar of the bikes was like the roar of the helicopters over Black Swan Bay. It’s not that you weren’t afraid. It’s just that experience told you that running in this situation was pointless. They’d just catch up with you and shoot you in the back. The only way to escape was to kill your opponent first. You didn’t think of yourself as a killer. Experience had taught you there was no other option.
You lift the gun into your other hand and aim directly at the closest motorcycle rushing at you. He was holding a knife, leering at you but his confidence burst at the sight of the gun in your hand. You aimed it right at the center of the forehead but then the wheel of his motorcycle exploded and the young man went flying off. You pull the trigger but the shot misses completely.
“MC!” Caesar snarls. "Don't clash with the madman! Retreat back the way we came!”
When you catch up to him, he pulls the gun out of your hands. “If you want to criticize Mingfei, don’t use guns against knife wielders.”
“He was on a motorcycle!” Of all people, you thought Caesar would understand. They were nearly killed just now and he was already resorting to gentle tactics?
“Don’t question me.” He wrapped the rifle’s band around his shoulders. “You’re not getting this back. Let’s go!”
“You’re too stunned to speak. You had imagined that Caesar of all people would understand a true life and death struggle. It seemed only weeks ago that your friends’ blood was being soaked into the snow and you were not going to survive unless the enemy died. You stood next to Renata who wielded the automatic machine gun and mowed down a helicopter, killing those inside.
You have to do this to protect the ones you love.
Caesar, the one who understood so much about you, didn’t understand this.

Beyond the Bay chapter 1: Omen in the Lights
Authors note: I know I said this was only going to be posted on A03, but I have decided against that and made the choice to expand it to my regular postings on Tumblr; there will be three posts a week; Monday, Wednesday, Friday.
It was late September, the heat of summer waning to give way to the autumn chill that had started to sweep its way through the city. The first snowfall had yet to arrive, but with the cold settling over New York, it wouldn’t be long before the city was blanketed in white. The moon reached its peak in the night sky and was beginning its downward descent into the west; if anyone had been looking up at that moment, they would have seen something miraculous. A falling star, illuminated brightly in the inky purple sky. Falling to earth on a mission from the stars and crashing into the Hudson river, sinking below the surface, a blinking white light pulsating all the way down
~~~
Deep in the undersewers of New York, in the old tunnels that even the most experience sewer workers didn't dare to enter, was a world forgotten by all but the rats and the creatures unseen. The steady drip drip drip of distant, decaying pipes were to this world like bird calls were to the surface. A constant, steady drumming that ceased not night nor day. Sometimes, the soothing drips would be jarred by the rumble of something old, far beyond its best days, giving a groaning complaint of its age. Rarer still would be a crash that told of one of those ancient structures living its last moments before succumbing to the fate of collapse.
Other than that was the pitter-patter of tiny rodent feet as rats, this worlds most plentiful residents, went about their days searching for scraps on which to feast upon. Sometimes they’d come in swarms, all seeking to indulge in the same noxious smell that invaded their senses. Other times they came alone. But they were always there, mostly unseen, some were bolder than others.
This day there was a noise other than the drip and scuttle and groan of everyday sewer life. There was the sound of motion, the steady echo of rubber bouncing off stone. The powerful strike of muscle against muscle, shell against shell. The sound of the biggest creatures to call the undersewers home, crashing against each other as they all fought over the basketball. Leo and Mikey vs Donnie and Raph.
The game went on for hours. Longer than any human game. Longer than any crash of giants on any continent. It went on for nearly eight hours before the self-set timer ran out and named Leo and Mikey the winners. The win, of course, was taken with very little modesty by the youngest brother. Leo was glad that, in his twenty-two official years of life, he had learned to tune out the incessant bickering of his two youngest brothers as Mikey boasted of his glory and Raph simmered in his defeat.
Still, even someone with as much patience as Leo Splinterson could only let the bickering go so far until he decided to intervene.
“Okay, okay, you both did well.” Leo got between his brothers, pushing Raph back just slightly. Mikey was more than happy to start hanging over Leo’s shoulders, still running that motormouth of his.
“Don’t feel bad, Raphie!” Mikey put extra emphasis on the childish nickname, “You may be a foot taller, but I gots an extra foot in the game brother!”
“Extra foot in the— that don’t even make sense!” Raph almost snarled.
“You don’t make sense!”
“That don’t make sense either!”
“Cool it.” Leo said finally, “The game was a good warm up for tonight's patrol.”
Those few words made the three younger Splinterson brothers melt into groans.
“What?” Donnie complained.
“No way!” Mikey groaned.
“Seriously?” Raph threw his arms out and then slapped them back down against his thighs.
“What?” Leo said, and then again louder, “What? We go on patrol every night!”
“But Leo, it’s our mutation day!” Donnie groaned. “And we’re exhausted! Plus, April made us that cake—“
“Which we can pick up after patrol.” Leo said simply.
“But what about dad?” Donnie frowned. “You know he likes us to spend our mutation day together.”
“It’s just three hours.” Leo said. “We’re ninja first, always. You know that. Dad will understand.”
Leo turned to leave, the frustrated mutterings of ‘no fair’ and ‘just had to ruin a good thing’ falling on his deaf ears. He didn't turn around; he already knew his brothers were following him, no matter how they dragged their feet or complained. This was their duty, mutation day or not. He couldn’t stand the thought of missing even the smallest occurrence that could cost them greatly in the long run. Shredder hadn’t been seen since Krang’s very temporary control over the city, but that didn't mean the Foot Clan wasn’t still active and preparing to strike. They had to be ready.
The patrol went by with little difficulty. Everything they saw were the same, normal things they’d seen in the weeks before. Men and women stumbling drunkenly home after a night out; the brothers, of course, would follow the latter to ensure she got home without trouble before going on with the patrol. Other than the women they escorted home, they also witnessed the average amount of drug deals taking place and teens sneaking out of their bedroom windows, and homeless trying to keep warm as they prepared for another long, hard winter; Donnie made sure to slip every single one of them a twenty. Whether they would use it for drugs or food was up to their discretion. Donnie didn't care either way. Who was he to judge?
Raph’s whistle stopped the brothers. Two sets of blue eyes and one set of green turned to him as the team fell to still silhouettes. Raph jerked his head toward an alleyway across the street, and four silent shadows passed over the lamp-lit road. Leo’s eyes scanned the area in its entirety searching for anything that could tell of trouble. Anything out of order. He heard three sets of breaths, not counting his own. No voices. No scuffling that didn't come from his brothers. Still he took in all the tiny details that tied together like an intricate spider web.
Down in the alley, he saw, was a woman, her hair grayed and wearing a sleeping gown. There were no shoes on her feet and no caregiver in sight, and every step of the elder was slow and shaky. Her voice came through the alley in a language he couldn’t understand, so he turned to Donnie for further confirmation of what he was sure he already knew. Donnie listened to the words carefully.
“Guys, I think she’s lost.” Donnie said, flicking his goggles down over his glasses, “Her vitals are stable, but its freezing.”
“What’s she saying?” Leo asked.
“Uh… she’s asking for help.” Donnie said.
“Should we go down there?” Mikey asked innocently, looking up to Raph.
“What, and scare her outta her skin?”  Raph asked, showing his canines.
“We can’t just leave her!”
“We ain’t gonna, doofus!”
“Donnie—“ Leo started.
Donnie held up his finger for silence as he started to pace the length of the rooftop, speaking into his headset. “Hi, yes, this is Donatello. You know, giant turtle, four eyes. There’s this old lady here…” He went on to relay their location and explain the situation further. His conversation with the authorities lasted only a few minutes before he ended the call. “Police are on their way.”
Leo nodded. His eyes had never left the alley or the wandering lady as she continued to call out. They stayed there waiting, watching her until the police arrived and even after that, making sure the old lady was safe in the police car being driven home. Only then, sure of the lost woman’s safety, did they continue with their patrol. They didn't get very far however before Mikey stopped and gawked at something.
“Woah!”
“What is it?” Leo asked. He followed Mikey’s gaze into the night sky and felt his jaw drop.
Donnie looked up next, and then Raph; the former took a long, wheezing gasp while the latter remained silent in his awe.
“What in the fabric of time is that?” Donnie asked.
“It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen!” Mikey beamed, “And I’ve seen April!”
“Glad we came out now, aren’t ya?” Leo smirked, elbowing Mikey in the side.
“Yeah…” Was all Raph was able to say.
It was like all the painters in the world had gotten together, pallets in hand, to pain the sky in streaks of gold and pink and cerulean. Colors bright and bold, melting into each other like a mixing bowl of everything beautiful in the world. A field of flowers woven into the heavens. The lights over the sky rivaled the brightness of the city itself, and in beauty, New York could never compare.
After their night of patrol and a quick stop at April’s to indulge in delicious, homemade cake, the brothers returned to the lair. Long strides carried Donnie past his father, Splinter’s words of welcome met with a mutter and quick departure. The rat only laughed and shook his head, for of course the first thing his second oldest would want to do after a night of work was to head immediately to his lab for more work. After all, when Donnie’s thoughts hardly let him sleep, it was always good to get some extra studying in. He had to keep up to date with all the latest news, even if it had only been a few hours since he had last checked. Raph stayed around just long enough to give his father a half-hearted hug before hurrying off to his room, and Mikey jumped over the old rat like he were an obstacle on the way to the kitchen. Leo was the only one to return Splinter’s welcome home greeting with a greeting of his own, immediately sitting lotus-style before his master to give a report on the night's events.
Pulling up articles to scan for anything interesting, Donnie was immediately flooded with several dozen headlines on the same subject: the beautiful light-show currently swallowing the New York City sky. Some of them were calling the lights a second Aurora Borealis, while other papers said that rockets or satellites were to blame. In fact, most every paper had a different story! A different theory of origin for the sudden glow. When the turtles had witnessed it on their patrol, it had taken such a long time for them to pry their eyes away from the beautiful canvas; even Leo had fallen victim to the painting in the sky! Along with the headlines, Donnie pulled up an influx of videos and pictures documenting the strange occurrence from all angles of the city, some even joined with reports of a meteor crashing into the harbor. Donnie had seen no meteor, but that didn't mean there wasn’t one!
“Hey.” Mikey, as air-headed as he could be, never failed to somehow always sneak up without Donnie hearing him. The box turtle leaned his full weight on his brother's chair, shoving handfuls of Cheetos into his mouth and crunching loudly in Donnie’s ear. Crumbs fell from his open maw as he chewed enthusiastically. “S’mething cool happen?”
Donnie growled and yanked his chair out from under Mikey, snickering as the youngest brother was just barely able to catch and right himself.
“You know there is Mikey; we saw it!” Donnie said, scooting his chair back in while dusting it free of crumbs. “Every article here is talking about those lights we saw! No one knows what they are!”
“They’re cool is what they are.” Mikey said, nodding his head and swallowing his mouthful before saying, “Do they have a cool name yet? Bet they have a cool name.” He pointed at the screen with his pinkie finger as he cracked open an orange energy drink and started to chug it.
“Everyone’s calling it something different.” Donnie reported, “But whatever they end up calling it, it’s beautiful. Something like this is a once in a life time experience!”
“Isn’t everything in our lives?” Mikey asked, followed by a burp.
“I guess.” Donnie snickered, “But there’s no telling if these lights will be there tomorrow night! I… I really wish I’d documented it, but I was just… too busy thinking of all the possibilities!”
“I know what that’s like.” Mikey nodded.
“It could be a solar event, or a chemical reaction, or a whole new phenomenon—” Donnie whined as his fingers worked quickly to pull up the most recent reports. “According to these, the lights are still there… and it’s just barely four-thirty.” He pressed his lips tightly together and tapped a pattern on his desk, “M...maybe if we hustle, we could still get some decent pictures before day breaks.”
Mikey nodded and smiled. “We totally could, dude.”
“Yes!” Donnie stood up, rushing past Mikey and started to reassemble his gear, pulling cameras and recordings and notepads— he brought three, just in case— and his goggles too. He could never leave home without his goggles! “We could and we are!”
He grabbed his good camera, a big bulk of a thing the size of his head, and pushed his way past Mikey.
“Are we going somewhere?” Mikey asked.
~~~
They were cutting it close. Very close. But Donnie couldn't pass up the opportunity to get at least a few decent pictures. The ones already posted to the internet by awed humans were one thing, but to get the pictures on his own, from the vantage of the highest buildings, was something else entirely. Donnie could only hope that the solar event would take well to the filters of his camera.
“Just a few more pictures.” Donnie promised Mikey as he set up his camera for another great angle. “Then we can head home.”
“Okay.” Mikey’s response was automatic, the words little more than jargon to the younger brother. No doubt Donnie thought the other turtle bored out of his mind, but it was the exact opposite really. Mikey was so focused on the lights in the sky that his mind wouldn’t let him think of anything else.
They were so beautiful, flashing and blipping in and out of reality with a mind of their own! Mikey rubbed his eyes. He wanted the lights to stay but they kept leaving. He was desperate to reach a hand out, believing he could touch them the little blips he tried, but his arm refused to listen.
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” Donnie asked. He snapped another picture of the lights, glad they hadn’t left yet; even with the brightening sky they were just as vibrant and visible as ever. Mikey didn't respond, but that went unnoticed by Donnie being too focused on his current task. “Wonder what it looks like from space!”
Mikey laughed. He laughed but he felt tears on his cheeks. The shinobi whined and lifted his left hand to rub his opposite arm as he felt goosebumps start to dance up the length of his body; at least the left one still listened, he figured, unlike the right one that was like dead weight. But the lights were too beautiful to care, and they were getting brighter too! Closer it seemed. Mikey forgot about his goosebumps as he reached up to touch the colors that started to dance all around him. They felt solid and hot, like burning metal— like he was touching the same stars that started to dance in his head!
Mikey’s lack of response was finally noticed by Donnie. The mutant peeked up from his work to glance at Mikey, groaning with the belief that the turtle had wandered off after a cat or another pizza pigeon. The belief was unfounded and replaced with confusion when he found his younger brother still there, right where he had been when Donnie last checked, still staring. His eyes seemed glassy and that made Donnie tilt his head. The technician’s eyes trailed downward to Mikey’s arm, which looked uncomfortably stiff, muscles bulging and veins defined as if he were under great strain.
“Mikey?” Donnie asked, setting his camera down to take a step closer to his brother. “Are you alright?”
Mikey smacked his lips together as pure heat flooded his mouth, like he had just swallowed a handful of peppers. Shadows were around him, speaking words he couldn’t hear, but they were so familiar to him that he tried to respond.
“Fer… repub… not… don’t like....” Mikey tried. His words came out wrong— that wasn’t what he wanted to say! He tried it again. “Great...er...ggg…”
“Mikey!” Donnie ran forward, wrapping strong arms around the ninja’s shell when Mikey began to slump forward, almost enough to fall off the edge he was standing on. Donnie yanked him back, pulling Mikey to fall back onto the roof instead; Donnie’s body worked to soften the fall for the other turtle as they both went down, the older cradling the younger.
The lights were still there, still overhead, and still blinking their toxic song.

Roman Sionis/Victor Zsasz/Birds of Prey imagines - Pussy Cat
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AN: Second Gif credit is @ewanmcgregorz
Overall Summary: You’re Roman’s little ‘pussy cat’. From the moment he met you, you were his but when you catch Zsasz fantasising over you... Things change...
Pairing(s): Roman Sionis xReader, (some) Victor Zsasz x Reader
Word count: 2,920
Warnings: Smut, Masturbation, Cheating, Strong Language, unprotected sex
“Good morning my pussy cat.” Roman announced his presence as he turned the corner from the bedroom and sauntered down the hall in his pyjamas and dressing gown.
You sat at the dining table opposite from Zsasz and your eyes glided over to Roman’s handsome morning look as you sipped your coffee.
“Morning my love.” You greeted him back, kissing his lips lightly as he leant down before he rounded your chair to find his own.
Your eyes moved back to your gaze on Zsasz as he stared at you back with hard look.
“Morning Victor. Terrible weather this morning, I’m afraid we’ll have to move our plans over to tomorrow and perhaps arrange our meeting at the docks with Mr William’s for this afternoon.” Roman helped himself to the filling spread across the table, picking up some pancakes and fruit.
“You got it, Boss.” Victor’s eyes didn’t leave yours as he spoke.
You smirked at the staring match you two seemed to have going and you even saw Zsasz lip twitch on the corner but he controlled himself before Roman could pick up on the little game.
“Are we still on for dinner tonight or shall I leave my dress at the dry cleaner another day or so?” You couldn't help but be cheeky with Roman which only earned a raised eyebrow and a dangerous smile.
“Of course, Kitten. I wouldn’t want to disappoint you now.” Roman’s nickname for you rolled off his tongue and you smiled.
Roman had called you his ‘pussy cat’ since he met you. You had walked into his club for the very first time and his eyes were watching your every move from the moment you passed through the doors.
You had reminded him of a sleek curious cat with your dark cat-like eyeliner and your silky hair that framed your face almost perfectly. You wore a black dress that hung off you, low cut at the front and even lower at the back. The thin material clung to your hips and cascaded down to the bottom of your heels, your knees only just moving the slinky dress with every step.
You studied the room as Roman watched you. Zsasz had noticed his boss had been distracted by someone that night and when he saw you, he soon understood why.
Roman immediately swooped you up that night and claimed you as his own. Within hours of meeting you, he knew he never wanted anyone else to have you but he also learned soon enough not to keep you on too tight a leash.
You’d been together a while now, long enough for the entire city of Gotham to know this wasn’t some usual fling.
Zsasz had grown more trustworthy of you, something very hard for him to do as all he’s wanted to do was protect his boss, but it was rare that you and Zsasz were alone too long together.
“Don’t forget you have a meeting with Miss Lance this lunchtime to discuss her new suggestions.” You reminded Roman as you rose from the table in your silk dressing gown similar to Roman’s but white.
“Thank you, my love.” Roman beckoned you towards him and you obliged, kissing him once again before you left to change for the day.
Roman was right; the weather was terrible which lead you to make the decision to stay in for the day. You spent the morning doing some yoga and working out before you finally crashed on the couch.
Roman was downstairs dealing with some business with the club and some potential new decor that might be added so nothing too risky/dangerous. By the time lunch came around and Roman was due to have his meeting with Black Canary, he sent Zsasz up to check on you.
When you heard footsteps coming towards you, you began to stir from your nap.
“So, we’re all working hard and you get to snooze?” Zsasz said with a light sarcasm as he came into view.
“Deciding on new wallpaper and seat covers isn’t exactly what I would call hard work, Mr Zsasz.” You teased the man, you actually knew that the faffing was all Roman’s business and that Zsasz would have been making business calls and sorting meetings for Roman that morning.
You stretched out on the couch as you spoke. Zsasz couldn't help but let his eyes travel across your body as you reached up, extending like a feline before turning and resting on your stomach.
You hadn’t changed from the morning so wore a simple sports bra and yoga shorts which hugged the curve on your ass as you lied down on your stomach.
“Ha Ha Ha.” Zsasz responded as he studied you.
“Roman sent you up to babysit or are you just visiting?” You knew Roman worried about you and you didn't mind too much when he sent one of his guys to check on you.
“You wish, princess. I’m just here to grab something for the Boss.” Zsasz was a pretty good liar usually but you learned to see through his bullshit. You knew well that Zsasz didn’t really like admitting that Roman sent him up to see you, he thought it might drive you away from Roman or cause a fight and he’d be damned if he started a fight between you two. He wouldn’t hear the end of it from Roman for days...
You smiled brightly at the man to which he just turned and headed to his bedroom.
You spent the next minute lying on the couch before you got bored and decided you should probably shower.
You walked down the hall towards yours and Roman’s bedroom when you passed Zsasz’s door.
An unusual noise made you stop just outside.
“Fuck...” Zsasz groaned, his slow pants audible through the door.
You were frozen. You didn’t know if moving away would make it more awkward. What if he heard your footsteps if you walked away and then he would know you were hovering outside?
“(Y/n)...” Your name rolled off of Zsasz’s tongue clear as day.
You felt your heart stop and your insides flutter.
The door was slightly ajar, closed but not closed enough to latch so you could easily push it open a fraction without him noticing.
You didn’t know what you were doing when you found yourself peering through the tiny gap with curiosity.
You could see Zsasz in his mirror opposite the bed he was sat on.
He had his eyes closed, his length in his hand and his chin slightly raised with his lips apart.
You bit down on your lip subconsciously as you watched the man stroke himself, cursing and moaning your name every few strokes.
His member was large in his hand, you could feel yourself tighten at the sight and your mouth seemed to go dry.
“Holy shit...” Zsasz moaned again, his low voice making his thick accent undeniably beguiling.
You watched him in the mirror as he started to pump faster, drawing himself closer and closer to climax.
Zsasz’s tongue darted across his bottom lip as his moans became louder and more gruff.
He threw his head back as he came. His seed spilling over his knuckles as he placed his other hand above his tip.
You weren’t aware that you stopped breathing in that moment.
When Zsasz cleared his throat and hunched over to return his member to his pants, you took that moment to walk away, picking up your feet as lightly as you could.
You reached the bathroom and shut the door, falling against it with wide eyes and a new found hunger.
You switched on the shower and immediately stripped, trying to cool yourself down from what you just witnessed.

You didn’t see Zsasz again until later that day.
You brushed through your hair as you sat in front of your vanity mirror, you were dressed ready to go to dinner but as always waiting on Roman.
“Boss is waiting downstairs.” Zsasz knocked lightly on your door,
You looked at him in the mirror, he hovered in the door way, his fingers tapping on the door frame as he waited for your response.
“He’s not changing?” You asked, trying not to stare at his fingers too long as images filled your head.
“Guess not.” Zsasz bent his head backwards as he turned away to look down the hall.
Your chest tightened at the side of his bare neck. A vein swelling out of the skin as he looked away from you. Your eyes travelled down his neck down into his shirt where the first few buttons of his shirt were open; the scars the decorated his skin only drew you to him even more.
“What?” Zsasz had noticed you staring before you noticed he was looking back at you.
“Nothing.” You frowned, trying to play it off. You went back to fixing your hair when Zsasz rolled his eyes.
“You look great, can we go?”
You were quick to leave the apartment and jump into the car with Roman.
“Hey, I missed you.” You kissed Roman on sight and he returned it.
His leather clad hand took hold of the side of your jaw as he deepened the kiss.
You felt the fire that had been brewing since lunchtime light up with Roman’s kiss. You hiked up your dress enough to swing your leg over Roman’s lap, sitting yourself down on top of him.
Roman’s hands moved to your hips but his lips parted from yours when your hands found his belt.
“Slow down, Pussy Cat...” Roman stopped your hands with his own.
“Why?” You whined,
“Because we’re meeting important people tonight and I can’t show up looking anything less than I already look.” Roman broke the news that it wasn’t just you two. Of course, it wasn’t, why were you even expecting it to be.
“Oh.” You climbed off of Roman and pulled your dress back down.
“I’ll make it up to you later, kitten, I promise.” Roman brushed your hair from your face with the back of his hand and stroked down your neck.
You stared ahead but pushed a smile on your face before Roman signalled the driver to leave.
The evening seemed to fly by unexpectedly and soon you were back in the apartment, lying beside Roman in bed.
Roman snored lightly as he slept beside you.
You couldn’t sleep.
Thoughts circled your head about your dirty little secret.
You couldn't get Zsasz’s voice out of your head, or the picture of his lips only slightly parted as he breathed heavily to the thoughts of you.
You brushed your fingers across Roman’s forehead and through his hair, he didn’t stir. You loved Roman. You admired him, found him entertaining, adored his passion and excitement. You even loved his tantrums when things don’t go his way, you loved the sex that followed them too.
But after today... After seeing Zsasz...
You couldn’t get rid of the feeling, the temptation, the thought of what it may be like...
Everyone couple had their slips, their doubts, the times where they considered the idea of someone else. Right?
You slipped out of bed and headed down into the living space of the apartment.
You passed the dining table, stroking your fingers along the cool table top as you did.
It was late. You figured around 3am but the city outside was still lively. Gotham never slept.
“What are you doing?” Zsasz’s voice startled you.
You were stood by the window when Zsasz found you.
“Jesus Zsasz...” Your hand rested on your chest from where you jumped around to see him.
“It’s 3 in the morning. I heard something outside my room, I thought it were a trespasser.” That’s when you noticed the large knife in Zsasz hand.
“Well you can put that thing away, big boy, it’s just me.” The words left your mouth quickly and whilst it was something you’d usually retort you found your cheeks flushing which made you spin back around to look out the window again.
“You shouldn’t be out here alone.” Zsasz commented, ignoring your remark.
“Why not?” You asked,
“Boss has a lot of enemies. If someone down there saw yous was alone through that window...” Zsasz gestured with the knife to the window you were people watching from.
“And if they dared, Roman would have you on their asses quicker than you say peeled face.” You smiled, trying your hardest to avoid looking at Zsasz, especially since he was only half dressed.
“You should go back to bed, princess, Boss wouldn’t like waking up to an empty bed.”
“I can’t sleep.” You responded, finally looking over at the man.
His pyjama pants were low on his hips, his v-lines prominent and dark hair trailed down. They were the only item of clothes he wore as he brandished his knife. With that, you could see all the scars that scattered over his chest and neck.
“What’s that gap for?” You walked towards the man, suddenly interested in the empty space above his heart.
“That’s a special place I’m saving for the Joker’s whore, Quinn.” Zsasz tapped on the space with the tip of his knife.
“Harley Quinn?” You found yourself raising your hand to touch the empty space and you saw Zsasz visibly tense up at your touch. “You and Roman really hate her, huh?”
You smiled up at him but it soon started to fade when you saw his eyes almost boring through you.
His lips were agape much like before.
You couldn’t stop.
Your hand reached behind his head in a blink of an eye and your lips crashed against his.
Zsasz only kissed you back for a second before he remembered who you were. He pushed his hands against you and shoved you back hard, causing you to stumble back a few steps; catching yourself on the couch.
Zsasz was breathing heavy, he was unsure what to do.
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry.” You whispered, skiing your head, your eyes locked on his.
After what felt like forever, Zsasz dropped his knife and strode towards you. His hands took hold of your face as he brought you against him, kissing you like you were water and he was dying of thirst.
You grasped onto the man, your fingers burrowing into his skin as you kissed him back. His mouth still tasted minty from his toothpaste; his teeth grazed your lips.
“Fuck...” You managed to say.
Zsasz’s mouth moved down your jaw and onto your neck, you had to bite down on your lip to stay quiet.
You started pushing Zsasz towards the couch to which he didn’t resist.
Zsasz sat down on the couch and his fingers brushed against the skin on your stomach as he grabbed the hem of your pyjama top. Your stomach was doing somersaults at the connection and all you wanted was more.
When your shirt was removed and your breasts fell free, Zsasz gripped onto your wrist and pulled you down onto the couch so that he could climb on top of you.
“Naughty little kitty.” Zsasz purred as he stared down at you.
You reached up, pulling his neck down so that you could meet his lips again.
His member pressed through his pants against your leg, making the fire in your belly roar wilder.
“Fuck me.” You begged whilst the man sucked on your nipples, nipping at them lightly. “Please.”
Zsasz yanked off his pants, springing his member free before tugging down your pyjama shorts.
He stroke himself a couple times before pressing his tip against your sex, rubbing it against your wetness.
You dug your nails into the man’s scarred chest as he finally pressed himself inside of you.
“Ohh fuck...” Zsasz groaned, closing his eyes from the pleasure of your tightness.
You, being inpatient, buckled your hips against his to take him fully and Zsasz had to bite down on your shoulder to stay silent.
He pulled his head back, propping himself up on the couch with his arms as he thrusted in and out of you.
He felt even better than you imagined.
Sweat beaded on the man’s forehead, his white hair tempting you to take a handful but his length only allowing you to press your fingers against his scalp.
Zsasz cursed again before pulling out and forcefully flipping you over, taking a handful of your ass before he entered you again.
You whined as he gathered a fistful of your hair and pulled. His thrusts were hard and deep, drawing you closer to your finish with every pump.
Zsasz could tell you were close, he pulled you up towards him so that your back was touching his chest. His hand covered your mouth, his thumb inside where you let yourself suck him.
You bounced against Zsasz as he thrusted and soon you were coming undone, coming on his lap.
“Good girl.” Zsasz hissed in your ear as he rode you through it.
You turned your head and met his eyes as he continued to fuck you.
Your (y/e/c) eyes are what brought Zsasz to a finish, his seed filling you as he became sloppy and slow.
“This is our secret now.” Zsasz murmured, his chest hot against your back as he held you there. His hand now on your throat.
You nodded, running your fingers over his plump lower lip to which he moved to suck on.
This was gonna be trouble...
