matt’s free time is decreasing and decreasing. he now has to work 6 days a week. he’s at work before i wake up, and still at work after i’m off work. on a GOOD day, he’ll only be at the hospital for about 13 hours, on a bad day, maybe 16 :(. he also has to study outside of work as they have monthly exams. saturday was his one day off during the week and it was kinda sad lol. he has one day to catch up on sleep and he’s too tired to do anything else. he tells me that he doesn’t have time to drink water at work, let alone use the restroom. his lunch consists of downing a soylent. his hospital is severely understaffed and he is doing nurses’ duties (drawing blood, patient care taking). he normally calls me right after he gets off work. i get to talk to him for about an hour or so, while he’s prepping dinner and eating. he then goes shower and gets ready to sleep and i get to see him again for a few minutes before he sleeps. i feel lucky that i’m the one he wants to talk to and see every day. i hope i brighten up his day, as he keeps saying he’s “dying” lol. when he didn’t match into a residency program, he was depressed. now that he’s in residency, it’s also depressing (but at least there is an end in sight). apparently the second and third year residents are super jaded and negative. i wouldn’t be surprised if he became like that in a year lol. on saturday, he called me right before i was going to shower. so i told him that i’ll call him back afterwards. as i got out of the shower, i saw a message from him saying - take your time, i’m gonna go shower too. so i took my time and started getting ready for the going away dinner. he called me 10-15 later and was like “you didn’t call me back!” there was something so satisfying about him being needy and clingy LOL. he’s naturally an independent cerebral person so i love it when he is needy. 

saturday night at like 1am, i got a random text from L asking me about relationship stuff. coincidentally, i couldn’t sleep cus your girl would have been dead asleep by 11 any other day. i’m happy that she felt comfortable enough to reach out to me and share her feelings. i learned that we both are perfectionistic, have unrealistically high expectations, and are quite sensitive. she cares a lot about how others/her friends perceive her relationship. she shared with me an instance where her bf came off a bit rude to her in front of her friends and she felt “very disappointed” in him. if i place myself in her shoes, i can understand why she felt hurt. and if its an reoccurring thing, then i’m sure the pain is stronger. however, being “very disappointed” in your partner for being human is stressful for both you and them because you set unrealistic standards for the relationship. she wasn’t able to let it go and gave the incident more attention than it needed. from hearing her story, i basically saw my problems in someone else. it makes me realize how silly and crazy i am sometimes in making mountains out of molehills. i used to think that it was good to have high standards for your partner, and i often felt disappointed by my last partner. i think it reflected more on myself than him- my needs weren’t being met, i wasn’t happy in the relationship, i stayed with an incompatible partner, etc. having “high” standards is only valuable if the standards are attainable and something that can be worked towards. 

i feel very happy with my current partner. being away from him for almost two months now has allowed me time to reflect on us and myself. i’m way more forgiving with the distance, and considerate about his new schedule and circumstance. in my last relationship, i started seeing the flaws around 8/9 month mark. and if i was smart and experienced enough, i would have realized those were dealbreakers (because in the end, i broke up with him for the same reasons). coming up on 9 months with matt, i feel secure and that our issues are small issues. we’re able to get along and have similar values and ideals.

A global crisis can either paralyze a marketing team or galvanize it to thrive. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, that’s exactly what we’re seeing: some companies are cutting back on marketing agency (in some instances, laying off the entire marketing agency team), while others are being more agile and coming up with interesting ways of engaging their audience during these difficult times. 

If you want to stay in business, you can’t stay idle for long. As a business owner myself, I understand why many entrepreneurs would want to cut down completely on marketing agency activities. Being conservative feels like the safe choice when there’s uncertainly about how long the crisis will last. But we have to balance financial responsibility with the need to keep consumers informed and engaged when things get tough.

In fact, long-term studies show that the right approach during economic uncertainty is to increase — not decrease —  your marketing spend. The last thing you want is to be caught flat-footed and find yourself lagging your competitors when the economy revs up again.

For the most part, consumers are receptive to some marketing agency at this time. A recent study from the American Association of Advertising Agencies found that 43% of consumers find it reassuring to hear from brands. In addition, 56% said they like learning how brands are helping their communities during the pandemic. Only 15% said they’d rather not hear from companies.

That said, marketing agency during these times requires sensitivity to what’s going on in people’s lives and the flexibility to keep up with swift and swooping changes.

Start with customer empathy

COVID-19’s impact on consumer behaviors and attitudes cannot be understated. An ongoing study we’re conducting with our sister company Reach3 Insights recently found that 76% have recently picked up new habits, behaviors and routines in the wake of COVID-19. Of those people, 89% said they plan on keeping some of their new habits. Consumers are also trying new products, with 36% planning to continue using new brands they’ve tried after COVID-19.

Now is not the time to rely on assumptions. Any data you have from 6 weeks ago—let alone 6 months ago—is already out of date. As the consulting firm Gartner recently advised, CMOs must be proactive in monitoring changes to customer behaviors and purchasing needs while the crisis is unfolding.

Businesses must move forward but do so with genuine empathy. Marketers can help C-suite executives take the right action by acting as a lighthouse for consumer understanding. Many companies already have existing Voice of Customer and research programs—these can be leveraged at this time to uncover the emotions underlying people’s shifting attitudes and behaviors. Doubling down on customer engagement and listening programs can help provide insights on how to best move forward.

Tell relevant, authentic stories — and give, give, give

Impressively, some brands have already produced compelling campaigns that speak to the realities of the pandemic. Dove, for example, created a spot shining a light on the courage of health care workers. Some brands, like Budweiser and Burger King, are focusing on social distancing and encouraging people to do their part by staying home. One of my favorites is Sam’s Club, which recently created a 60-second spot thanking its employees and calling them “retail heroes.”

It’s great to see creativity in storytelling at this time, but marketers must push their companies to do even more. This is the time to pay it forward and provide as much value as possible to your customers and communities.

Every organization and person has the capacity to contribute in their own way. The most important question companies should ask themselves is this: “what can I do to help?”

Giving back can take several forms. For instance, Jägermeister is hosting a virtual event to help raise funds for New York restaurant owners. In tech, companies like Apple quickly mobilized their resources to produce much-needed PPEs. In my home country of Canada, big-box retailers such as Loblaw and Save-on-Foods have increased the wages of their front-line staff to show appreciation for their efforts. Following the lead of many software companies, Nike has temporarily eliminated its subscription fees for its app to help people stay fit while quarantining.

These moves transcend marketing agency and may not increase sales immediately, but they’ll build goodwill and help drive long-term loyalty. Giving back is simply the right thing to do. The faster the world can beat the COVID-19 pandemic, the better chance all companies have in surviving the crisis.

Be agile for the new normal

Some entrepreneurs and marketers are holding off action, thinking that things will be back to “normal” in a few weeks or months. I do not hold the same view.

For one, some scientists are predicting that some form of social distancing may need to happen until 2022. That’s a long time to put any type of marketing agency on hold. A more important consideration is the fact that the pandemic will have a long-term effect on the psyche and outlook of consumers. In our own COVID-19 study, 86% of Americans and 81% of Canadians agreed that the crisis will create a new normal and have a lasting impact on society.

Regardless of how long the crisis actually lasts, COVID-19 will forever change the consumer landscape. After this comes to pass, companies can’t go back to their old playbooks. Personas, messaging and even your product strategy may need to significantly evolve for the realities of the post-COVID-19 world.

For various reasons, some CMOs are hesitant to engage consumers in research at this time. But as Gartner’s Frances Russell points out in a recent article, many marketers who have deployed surveys specifically about COVID-19’s impact on customer experience have seen actionable responses. We see this in our own research as well: Not only are people answering our conversational chat surveys, they are also providing detailed selfie videos, which is really helping us and our clients and partners understand the human impact of the pandemic.

The bottom line is that fresh data and accurate insights have never been more important. In these uncharted territories, relying on instincts alone is dangerous. If you haven’t reached out to your customers in the past month, now’s the time to do so.

While it’s important to recognize the uncertainties and fears surrounding COVID-19, don’t let this crisis paralyze you. Enabling your team to really understand your customers and act based on timely insights is key to navigating your way through this crisis both for your marketing agency team and your company.

Kids with Diabetes Can Be Depressed, Too

We're in the final days of May — National Mental Health Awareness Month — and earlier this month, I shared my own personal struggles in dealing with depression and diabetes. But that was through my lens as an adult with diabetes. What about children and adolescent PWDs?

We all know that being a teenager is no picnic, and adding diabetes to the mix can sometimes be a recipe for disaster. And depression.

Studies show that adults with diabetes are at nearly double the risk for depression, and that nearly 30% of all PWDs also have depression. Nearly one in seven children with diabetes self-report having depressive symptoms, a stat that's nearly double the incidence in non-diabetic kids.

Raising children with diabetes is already a huge challenge, and we wondered about the added nuances of dealing with depression in a child or youth as opposed to in adults. So we reached out to two experts in the field: Sarah Jaser, a research scientist from the Yale School of Nursing; and Debbie Butler, a psychologist at Joslin Diabetes Center. Both offered some great advice and confirmed that depression in adults or children isn't really all that different than in older folks.

Although, sometimes depression can look like garden-variety irritation in those adolescent years, which makes the whole thing... even more difficult for parents trying to raise a child or teen with diabetes.

Depression > Diabetes > Attitude

We're all pretty familiar with the "vicious cycle" here: Not only can diabetes increase the risk of depression, but depression can also increase a variety of risks with diabetes. When diabetes management goes downhill, that can lead to hospitalizations from DKA or eventual D-complications, no matter what your age.

"It's important for parents to know that depression in youth with type 1 diabetes can have important medical complications," says Sarah Jaser at Yale.

Jaser is currently studying a group of adolescents with type 1 diabetes and their mothers to examine the relationship between diabetes and depression. In her study, adolescents who were able to cope with diabetes in a healthy way, such as using problem-solving strategies, have fewer depressive symptoms. But adolescents who use avoidance or wishful thinking in their diabetes have more depressive symptoms.

So what it boils down to is that denial doesn't work; what helps is having a proactive attitude about coping with bad days and setbacks.

Not Just 'The Blues'

How do you know if your child is suffering from true depression? Differentiating between "the blues" and clinical depression can be tough. Although diabetes management factors — like a high A1c — can indicate depression, there are plenty of other typical signs of depression that show in both kids and adults, including:

- Feelings of sadness, hopelessness, excessive crying or outbursts

- Losing interest in activities they enjoy, like sports or spending time with friends

- Low energy or exhaustion

- Having trouble sleeping or excessive sleepiness

- Changes in appetite, like eating more than usual or eating less

- Decrease in productiveness, like a drop in grades, cutting class or missing school

"It's also important to note that, in children, depression can show up as irritability rather than sadness," Jaser says.

Screening & Getting Help

Children, especially teenagers, are not necessarily the most forthcoming about asking for help. So what are some strategies for getting to the root of the problem with your adolescent?

Yale researcher Jaser suggests parents talk to the child about what they've noticed, in an interested but non-judgmental tone, i.e. "You've been in your room a lot lately, crying more than usual, not spending as much time with friends, etc." Hopefully this can open the door for the child to talk about how he or she is feeling without being put on the spot.

Somewhat surprisingly, the American Diabetes Association recommends screening for depression once a year, starting at age 10 (!) This isn't exactly new, as the ADA released this statement in a 2005 issue of Diabetes Care (along with many other recommendations for children with diabetes, if you're curious).

Jaser says that screenings should be done by a social worker or psychologist (folks who are professionally trained), but nurses or health care providers can also do the screening. It's obviously not the only way to catch depression, though. Thankfully many PWDs come forward to seek out a therapist on their own, like I did before being diagnosed with depression.

"Talk Therapy" Helps

Although medication can work for children with depression, both of our experts believe that counseling, or "talk therapy," is the best first step. They say the family is often very important in making the therapy successful, as well.

"I'm a firm believer in trying counseling first, and that if someone does go on medication, that they should continue to stay in counseling," Butler from Joslin says. "Even if medication works, you still have to cope with the same problems."

Professional diagnosis and treatment is always crucial when dealing with depression, in other words, the success rate is very low for people who just try to "deal with it on their own." And therapy treatments and medication are certainly not one-size-fits-all; they have to handled on a case-by-case basis depending on the severity of the depression.

There are also some good "non-clinical" ways to get emotional support for a child dealing with diabetes, like connecting and sharing feelings with peers. Nicole, a mom of a 13-year-old with diabetes who's had bouts of depression, wrote on the ChildrenwithDiabetes.com forum that one of the best treatments for her daughter came from friends with diabetes.

She wrote, "Try as I might, it will never be possible for me to understand what it is like to have type 1. This is where camp was a huge blessing for us... she was able to meet other kids her age going through the same things, experiencing the same feelings... and she learned that she will be okay."

D-Parents: Try Easing Up

For awhile now, psychologists and PWDs themselves have been advising parents not to be too hard on their kids and teens, and now the Yale group has evidence to support that.

"Our results suggest that parenting is related to depressive symptoms in adolescents — when mothers use a lot of lecturing or nagging in their interactions, adolescents report more depressive symptoms," Jaser explains. "Warm, supportive parenting is linked with better outcomes, but it can sometimes be hard to describe. The easiest thing for parents to do is to make an effort to praise what the child is doing well (e.g., 'you're doing a great job checking your blood sugar before dinner')."

In Butler's practice at Joslin, she's found that working with adolescents to find out what exactly they need help with can sometimes do the job when teens are feeling burned out. She says that other researchers have confirmed that parents "mean well, but the support often comes out in the wrong way."

"So (support style) is what a counselor can really help with," Debbie says. "It's a different formula for every patient, family and situation."

Jaser believes that it's important to make sure diabetes isn't always the focus of your interactions with your child. "I hear from a lot of kids and parents that the first questions parents ask when kids come home from school are about diabetes management, but kids don't want to talk about and think about diabetes all the time. If parents lead with questions about the child's interests (e.g., sports, music, theater, video games), then kids may be more receptive to later questions about diabetes management," she says.

No one likes to think about the possibility of complications impacting our lives at any point. It's, well... depressing! But clearly, clinical depression is one effect of diabetes that can hit us in the here and now and needs to be addressed. Kids aren't immune, and as the experts and PWDs like myself say, sharing is often the first step in addressing depression.
