I think it's also interesting to see how things change depending on the time in which they're being engaged with. so I see things about rose today that point out that she's written to be 19 when she meets the doctor and that's a big age difference (which... I understand the point is it's a big age difference because billie piper was 23 and eccleston was 40, and then dtennant was like 34/35 when he started which isn't so big of a shift but anyway the optics I get what people are getting at, but also I think it does oversimplify a lot of what's actually going on in the written dynamic, anyway-)
and also that the rtd run's Themes start coming together properly around s3 (although they are present from day one), and in some ways at this point, because nu!who has been running for... fuckn. actually quite a few years, which is wild to me as someone who started watching as a kid, and I wonder if classic!who fans felt the same way about their show and anyway -- she shifts from being Literally The First Companion You'd Seen For 17 Years (not counting the movie and fan things and the sketch) Who Was Defining A New Era For A New Generation to... a companion
comparable to other companions, comparable to the rest of the show
we sift through the writing to see what worked and what didn't (in our opinion), and we know how the ten-and-rose storyline Really ends, and how the ten storyline ends (sort, of because now that doctor and donna are Back), and we know what happens afterwards, and we talk about tenrose with a 2020s eye, and rose is "just" one of the people that travels with the doctor, one of several, and notably the one who gets most of the sunshiney doctor that buries a lot of the (wonderfully portrayed) angst of the latter half of the rtd show, and doesn't have as much lore as everything after that, so the story is "just" more simple overall
and to me she's kind of incapable of being just that. doctor who was still a risk that first season, it wasn't a done deal that it would have legs at all, never mind that it would continue for as long as it has. rose was created to be the Face of what nu!who was, moreso than nine/eccleston, because even with the extra angst and the eccleston gravitas, we know the doctor, the doctor is established, it's not actually the doctor that needs to sell what the new show is going to become and what the Feel of that new show is going to be (I mean, partly ofc, but-)
rose was doing so much heavy lifting and she succeeded! she was the face of who before dtennant or any other doctor or companion of his era and subsequent eras. she was created to appeal to a demographic of girls who wanted someone relatable in science fiction, because rtd wanted this to be for the girls, and billie piper came into it off the back of being a popstar and it changed her entire trajectory (for the better I think/hope -- there's a lot of bad shit in billie piper's past and I'm always sending her a fond thought)
nine/ten-and-rose were It! not calling it romantic or platonic or any secret third thing (haunting the narrative), but simply It! that's why it has so much staying power as a ship (which, my opinion on shipping has been somewhat *eh shrug* in later years, but in early-days when that was how you engaged with dynamics that got to you, of course it was going to be massive). it's so hard to properly describe how "for the time in which it was made" that this dynamic was written for, and how successful it was. it was rose that breathed doctor who -- and the doctor's character -- to life, as much as herself
she sets the stage for everything that comes next, both within and without the show proper
and I'm always so pleased that rtd at the time was thinking about what was needed to create this character and he opened with a shot from a girl on the estate with messy hair, clumpy eyeliner, and a minimum wage job, and went "that's the girl who's going to go on the adventure of a lifetime, that's the girl we're seeing the story through and relating to, because that's what girls (and uh... those who were girls at the time - and their parents and the boys) should be seeing."
I know rose isn't the first working class companion including classic!who, but she set the tone for nu!who and her family and background are important to why she is who she is, and is explored
"I've got no A-levels, no job, no future-" said the girl about to see the universe
she was very much for teenagers, and so she reads differently when you're an adult watching it back (much like those "teenager saves the world," novels you loved as a kid), but that's why she's 19 at the beginning. that's why she's billie piper (who does a perfect job). she was there to bring a new generation into this story, and it was perfect. and then she grows up. and we grew up. and she had adventures and it was brilliant and she survived and she made a life for herself. that's her story

Flower on a High Peak? Days Long Past?
and why does it sound so interesting👀
~@too-much-gacha
Aaaahhh candy!! I'm so sorry this took a bit but Flower on a High Peak drove me crazy because I could not for the life of me come up with a good summary that didn't involve explaining half of Assassination Classroom?? Only to then remember that almost all of the actual plot of AssClass plays the most minor of roles imaginable in my fic???? Sometimes I don't think when I start working on things
ANYWAY onto the fics
Flower on a High Peak (fanfic)
As mentioned, this is one of the two fanfics that aren't Obey Me-related, but rather for Assassination Classroom! I at one point used to have like.....15-ish AssClass WIPs at once? Someone help me 😭
((Also, real quick--Asano is the family name))
Anyway, it's about Asano who has had a ghost companion called Ikeda ever since he was four years old. They are bound together by an invisible thread that, if ever broken, is said to forever break the living's person soul. The next decade passes without incident, but once they discover in what way Ikeda's life (or rather, his death) has been an integral part to the Asano household, it finally threatens to snap once and for all
I can't give you an exact age for this one since I've only ever handwritten it, but I know it's several years old. I think maybe 5 or 6 years.....? It's definitely the second oldest one on the list tho
Days Long Past (fanfic)
Hey, the newest one in the entire line-up!
What inspired this one was my brain coming up with this exchange:
Father: I do not remember you being so hateful.
Lucifer: That 'hate' is nothing but the love you took from me. My corps has been rotting alongside hers the day you chose to abandon me. Her blood will forever cling to your hands, Oh Divine "Creator". You killed her. You killed me.
And then I thought 'hey, this would be a cool fanfic idea'. And then it spiraled from there
So essentially, it's about OG Lucifer suddenly finding himself in the Celestial Realm long before the Great Celestial War will take place, finally getting to yell at Father and realizing that ultimately, he's happier now as a demon than he would have been if he continued being an angel
Or as I described it to a few friends: og Lucifer suddenly finds himself in the Celestial Realm in a time before the Great Celestial War & he just met Father again & he was giving Luci shit for being super pissed at him & then Luci is like "don't care + didn't ask + ratio + I've never been happier bitch"
This one would feature the other brothers + Lilith as children btw, so it would have a lot of fluff >:)
As for the title, this was the only one I didn't already have one for since I only came up with the idea itself like five days ago. I had to come up with one at the spot and this was the first thing I thought of 😭

Since today is apparently the day for ending thoughts on TBB - I don't think that the series is going to end with the batch split up, if only because they've never really been together. Crosshair of course has always been off on his own hell journey, Echo left to work with Rex, Tech "died", Omega kidnapped. They started the series with a fracture and they've just become more and more fractured over time.
But, they've also been following Hunter's desire to stay out of shit that whole time. To settle down and find a good life for Omega. Let her be a child and not a fighter. And if the season 2 finale says anything, it says that just stepping out isn't an option. The Empire is never going to just leave their family alone.
We know Echo doesn't want to stop, not when there are other clones out there to help. And I think that after everything Crosshair isn't going to want to stop either. He's less motivated by sheer altruism than Echo, but he has branched out from only caring about the batch and absolutely no one else and he has every reason to despise the Empire after this.
Omega? We know baby girl loves to help people and her time in Mt Tantiss will have given her a close up look at every reason that the fight for the clones isn't over. And she's become more and more independent as the show goes on. Hunter will want her to stay on Pabu and unlike in the season 2 finale she won't be in the depths of despair. She's going to want to help and I don't think anything is going to stop her.
Tech has been the other voice of Going After Crosshair in season 2, and once they get him back and he wants to go with Echo? And Omega does too? Tech is going to lend his assistance, on or off the field depending on how we get him back.
Which leaves Wrecker and Hunter. Hunter trying to convince them to please just settle down say its enough, he can't lose people that he just got back. But he's being outvoted one by one. And when Wrecker decides that they have a point, because of course he's missed Omega, Tech, AND Crosshair and he's going where they're going... well, Hunter is going to have to admit that their job isn't done.
One of the themes has been being more than soldiers - and that leads to a thought that they'll finally get to retire and I think they do make Pabu their home base and it's a more restful life than they've had. But I don't think it'll be to retire completely. They're not just soldiers, they're a family. But there are many more brothers out there that need to be brought home before they're done.

ok guys i dont wanna be a hater but im gonna be 100% honest i didnt rlly like the nimona movie 😭 I MEAN IT WAS FUN. it was nice. but i feel like it was missing everything that made me like the original graphic novel and honestly by the last like 30 minutes i was kind of just waiting for it to be over so i could read the book again 😭 NO HATE TO ANYONE WHO RLLY LIKED IT believe me when i say i dont think it is bad or anything. but i feel like just sooooo much was changed that it didnt feel like nimona at all to me. idk how to explain it, im sure once i reread the book i’ll be able to put it into words since the original will be more fresh in my mind. i think it was good but as someone who was literally obsessed w the og graphic novel it was honestly kinda disappointing. but i dont rlly care honestly its still rlly cool it got a movie!!
but in my mind at least it proves that some things dont need to be made into a movie. ppl act like movies are the best form a piece of media can take and if something gets made into a movie then that’d be the peak form of it. but i honestly think nimona works wayyyyyy better in its original graphic novel form. most of the early stuff is way more slice of life lowkey stuff that lets you get attached to ballister and nimona as characters and get invested in their relationship w each other, BEFORE all the angsty final act stuff happens. also there honestly was just a ton of stuff that felt to me like it worked better in the original, like jousting tournament thing instead of the knighting ceremony, nimona being captured and being forced to turn into her “true” form rather than this new version with it just sort of happening bcuz of Emotions, etc. also the movie suffered from a lot of pacing and tone issues imo but the former i think is just from that lack of the slow buildup of their friendship, and the latter is something that i think just worked better in the book. idk again I’LL BE ABLE TO SAY THIS STUFF MORE CONCRETELY WHEN I ACTUALLY REREAD THE BOOK but i dont remember there being so much jokes and goofy shit DURING serious scenes. like iirc in the original during serious scenes it was SERIOUS. but in the movie theres so many unnecessary unfunny jokes and stuff. idk IDK i probably just had too high expectations idk. anyways

@beatingheart-bride
"You didn't tell us your new friend was a philosopher, lad!" Wilhelm commented from his seat with a sly smile, at which Randall (now blushing from both this remark and Emily leaning into his embrace) smiled shyly himself, shooting his father a little look (a look the Pace patriarch seemed pleased to have received) before he returned his focus to her, very gingerly wrapping his arm around her.
As he did so, his mother and father exchanged looks themselves; looks of pleasant surprise at Emily's thoughts on the matter. Maybe they should've seen it coming (though they hadn't known the young woman long, it was very clear to them early on what kind of person she was), but still, it nonetheless surprised them to hear this perspective. Too often had they been scorned by churchgoing peers for their lack of funds, a struggle with addiction, a mother working outside the home...it was hard not to let those harsh looks and even harsher words get to them, to tell the truth.
But it was clear to them that their boy's new sweetheart was not like those neighbors, who thought themselves so much better than them when on their way to the chapel in their Sunday best. No, she was a sweet girl, with a good nature and an open heart-and they hoped to have more quiet nights at their home with her like this in the near future.
