Things you might not realize are affecting your ao3 readership:

Putting unrelated fics into one compilation instead of series or collections

Not tagging your fics/“haha I’m so bad at tagging!”

Tagging all of the ships in a fandom instead of the relevant ones to the story

“This is my first fic ever”/ “I’m really not a good writer” / “sorry if this is crap”

Summaries that say “sorry don’t think I will update much” or “might be abandoned idk”

Tagging “r@pe” or “unaliving” etc instead of the actual tag so people can filter/exclude

NOT tagging major, relevant tags or kinks without using the “creator chose not to use archive warnings” option

Telling people how bad your writing is and how you hate it so much and how they shouldn’t even be reading your fic (self deprecation)

Weird punctuation: not starting new quotes or descriptions on a new line, and/or putting extremely long blocks of text on the page without a break

#while there are many valid reasons to do these things #they can affect if people will click on your story #they can be very influential #and it might explain some hits or ratios you don’t like #but not all #we all go through it as writers and we do this for free #but these are some reasons I might keep scrolling and that I’ve seen from other people #fanfic #fic #writing #fanfiction #ao3 #archive of our own #most of this applies to ao3 but still #soft writing rant for Friday #I’m not saying things will magically change if you don’t do these #but it will help i promise #always put your best self out there #and so much of these are self deprecating as a protective measure #I totally get why we do it #IVE done these #trust me #writing things #just writing things #reading #reading things

A group of ppl who have known each other for a while. One of them isn’t sure if they have ADHD or not, so they ask the group what they think. Group collectively agrees they most definitely have ADHD. Person have now been peer reviewed, and peer diagnosed.

Types of Words That Cause Poetic Suffering:

Has several solid rhyme options but they’re all so common and predictable that you feel really bad about using them

Has literally dozens of rhymes but you can’t make any of them work for some goddamn reason

Has an extremely tempting off-rhyme (bonus points if it used to be a true rhyme because of phonetic shifts so it shows up constantly in older poetry), forcing you to engage in deep soul-searching about what sort of partial rhymes you will ethically permit yourself to use

Has one or two rhymes and they’re great but you already used them in a different poem and you don’t want to feel derivative

You could make a really clever polysyllabic rhyme with multiple words, but it doesn’t fit the tone

There are rhymes but using them forces you to do such ungodly things to syntax that there may as well not be

There is nothing for this word. RhymeZone is lying to you.

It looks like Lucy gets trapped in a freezer next ep so... when tim tries and fails to pry the doors open and just breaks down trying to save her (while aaron watchs and waits for angela probs) and then just sits down and starts talking to her like she did in s1 finale while she trembles from the cold and then help finally arrives and they are able to open the freezer so tim just immediately hugs her in front of way too many people then what huh
