Samurai Jack creator Genddy Tartakovsky has released a striking piece of Rick and Morty crossover art in preparation for the show’s season 5 finale, “Rickmurai Jack.” Tartakovsky is a modern legend of the animation world, having worked on acclaimed shows like Dexter’s Laboratory, Batman: The Animated Series, The Powerpuff Girls, and Star Wars: Clone Wars. Tartakovsky also has a longstanding professional relationship with both Cartoon Network and Adult Swim, where Rick and Morty airs.

Rick and Morty is no stranger to crossovers and pop culture homages. In fact, the series practically lives off of the various spoofs and references that make up its various episodes. The titles of the episodes often reflect those references directly, generally with an added “Rick” or “Morty” for good measure. The Rick and Morty season 5 finale has been of particular interest to fans because of its delayed release and two-part structure. And with a title like “Rickurai Jack,” it promises to have some unique influences.

In preparation for the Rick and Morty season 5 finale’s release on the evening of September 5, Adult Swim has shared a new piece of official crossover art from Samurai Jack creator Genndy Tartakovsky. The piece depicts Jack meeting an altered Rick and Morty, drawn in Tartakovsky’s iconic visual style. It embraces both the striking aesthetic of Samurai Jack with the humor of Rick and Morty in a fun way, with a caption from Adult Swim declaring that “This crossover hits different.”

Will some of Tartakovsky’s animation actually make it into the Rick and Morty season 5 finale? It’s certainly not outside the realm of possible for a show that is constantly breaking the fourth wall. Adult Swim has had some interesting promos in the lead-up to the finale’s premiere, including a live-action teaser featuring Christopher Lloyd as Rick and Jaeden Martell as Morty. That could all just be marketing, but it’s possible that these different aesthetics could make their way into the two-part finale, which would be especially exciting to see.

Overall, Rick and Morty season 5 has had a bit more of a lukewarm response than previous seasons of the show. A few episodes have been criticized for wallowing too much in low brow humor and eschewing the more serious and emotional storylines that the series has been praised for. It’s still one of the best shows on television, but for many, the latest season hasn’t been up to the high expectations the series has set for itself. Maybe the Rick and Morty season 5 finale can give fans and critics what they’ve been waiting for when it premieres on Adult Swim at 11:00 p.m. ET on September 5.

i’ve, for a really really long time, wanted to write like. a scene where laura kinney and henry sutter Talk Their Shit Out, but that would take so so long and i’m not motivated... sorry laura and henry. okay i think the rest of these will b about mabel but. gotta stick with my idiots.

What character that you’re writing do you most identify with?

right now? either vera or mabel. vera is... not Right, and not Wanted by the outside world, so she’s angry and stupid to combat it. and mabel just... loves Her Person more than anything in the world, so there’s that. 

What character do you have the most fun writing?

again, mabel!! she’s so fun and angry all the time and it’s so freeing to just be able to do whatever the hell you WANT with a character

What do you think are the characteristics of your personal writing style? Would others agree?

Uh!! I think i use a lot of metaphor and write a lot of physical affection :’) i’m not sure if others would agree but that’s pretty basic!!

yeah...

Are you more of a drabble or a longfic kind of writer? Pantser or plotter? 

i write a lot of drabbles, but my proudest works are my long fic!!! i also plot way too much and i love to do it.

Do you wish you were the other?

i have no idea what this means but... yeah i guess? How would you describe your writing process?

pace around my entire house looping one (1) song thinking of one (1) scene. figure out exactly what it would take to get the characters to that point. write like 2000 words, fall asleep, cant make words for the next three years.

What do you envy in other writers?

oh god, everything. i don’t know how to make my words flow like certain people do, RIVER

god no. my stories are mine.

yes! here! there’s one story i’ve only shared with two people and that’s my borderline-ridiculous ‘beetlejuice with lab rats and gay shit and werewolves’ au, it’s the most self indulgent thing i’ve ever written and i love it so much.

At what point in writing do you come up with a title?

usually while listening to songs!! fr example my most recent posted fic is a lyric from ‘cop car’ by mitski because the line ‘i get mean when i’m nervous / like a bad dog’ makes me think of mabel, thus that fic came into existence.

Which is harder: titles or summaries (or tags)?

SUMMARIES i hate summaries usually i just paste in whatever i’ve got as the first sentence.

Tried anything new with your writing lately? (style, POV, genre, fandom?)

not really? new fandom but. i got my bread and butter, dude, i don’t feel like branching out. writing’s just a hobby i’m okay at.

Do you think readers perceive your work - or you - differently to you? What do you think would surprise your readers about your writing or your motivations?

i don’t think so !! like some of the stuff is personal and you can’t really understand from an outside POV, but. most of it is just dorky found family stuff!

oh dear god yes... i mean. obvs river youre asking this youre aware of my aus. but i have a billion aus, theyre my favorite thing to write and ive got at least three for every fandom i’m in. i have an au for my lab rat beetlejuice au, too, which i’ll get around to writing someday.

Is there something you always find yourself repeating in your writing? (favourite verb, something you describe ‘too often’, trope you can’t get enough of?)

ALL I DO IS DESCRIBE PEOPLE’S TEETH AND PHYSICAL AFFECTION. uhh i use the phrase ‘bared their teeth / had far too many teeth / smiled with too many teeth’ a lot, its because i find it the easiest descriptor for monsters and i like to write about monsters.

Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)

ohh god okay youngmabel take three. anna wears soft reds and lots of layers-- to contrast mabel, who wears a thin nightgown and has a bright green color palette. this is largely because mabel has been made to show herself to everyone who’s tried to control her (sally, aurora silver, etc) while anna hides in herself. anna specifically wears one of mónica’s old sweaters, because she can hide and protect herself with her family, while mabel cant. also i love mónica im so hype to have her in the series. mabel also repeats things in groups of threes (”hello, hello, hello, anna, hello, hello, hello”) because she’s fae. i love her. ough and i cant wait for the character development you guys rnt ready fr this dumb series

What other medium do you think your story would work well as? (film, webcomic, animated series?)

I WOULD LOVE FR IT TO BE AN ANIMATED SERIES but also it as a film would rock.... yeahhhhh

Do you reread your old works? How do you feel about them?

my xmen ones, yeah. they’re really comforting for me. i feel like i wanna give my kid self a big big hug.

What’s the story idea you’ve had in your head for the longest?

probs the daemons au or the agents of shield / xmen crossover.. those both gave baby abbey a lot of fun hours.

What a BAMF!

( I was a child and very tiny and kinda fairly very bullied and Seto was...well he broke into his own house and jumped out a window. And he could fight. I was sold. I wanted to be like him.) I also sided with him over Yugi on most things...including friendship and speeches.

Maaaaaaaaac freakin dork ass curt ass dramatic af  child with anger issues and trauma someone help him someone help him Now.

I also ( obviously) now side with Yugi over Seto on the whole friendship deal. (But I get Seto’s reaction on an almost instinctive level and still love him a lot.)

( Like..dont get it wrong. I poke fun at him because of how much he reminds of me as a kid but...I adore him and I’ll defend him from near anyone. Okay no I won’t because im a coward who goes into fight-or-flight at the mere thought of char-disc-0urse but like still 

I love the kid.  Him good child. Deserves all the happiness and good fortune. I want to see him grow up healthypng.)

hmm. I haven’t seen him since the show was new so its foggy but..Imma say any time he either shares screen time with Mokuba or snarks at Joey. ( at Joey specifically because oh lord “Mokuba make sure Wheeler’s late” still sends me into a laughing spell. ( mind you I adore Joey too but  uh..yeah. Snarking Seto is best Seto)

Idea for a story

Right now the one I have is a crossover with xmen where Laura Kinney becomes his and Mokuba’s bodyguard. It has ended up becoming 3 separate verses because i couldn’t decide between comic!book Laura and Logan!Laura and also at what time in both their stories I wanted them because I am the opposite of competent and know no hubris.

It’s eking along kinda slow-like tho. Because writing Seto’s hard for me. I feel like a lot of people have done it better already. So I don’t know that it’ll get done.

Also I don’t know how to keep her from killing Pegasus.

I also had an idea for him and Tea becoming friends in like therapy or something but that never kicked off. Although it’s worth mentioning I’d like to explore the concept of what it would take for them to get along.

Unpopular opinion

He’s a good person I guess? I’ve heard that’s unpopular but haven’t seen it. He deserves a shot at a happy life. He’s a good person? He has never ( to my knowledge) been unkind to Mokuba and even if he was being angry in one moment in your life isn’t some kinda morality indicator especially when it comes to children. Especially traumatized to high heaven children who just keep getting traumatized so no Mokuba didn’t “deserve a better brother” or w/e both Seto and Mokuba deserved better period and can people just enjoy the show which is about forgiveness and friendship anyways good golly. 

I mean..yeah I guess I got a few.

 Another one that I think might be unpopular but I don’t know due to not really publicizing it is that Seto and Yugi....actually aren’t that different at the core? Like if you took Seto away from a lot of the Tragic Backstory stuff he might end up..not exactly like Yugi but not that different either. They’d have a lot in common.

Him and Mokuba. Hands down.

Favorite headcanon

Ohshoot do i even have one hm. This ask covers a lot of the headcanons I have for him..but I guess my favorite is him liking children followed by the one that he does math equations and formulas when he’s bored.

I also share a lot of the ones @iced-blood has posted due to most of my exposure to the character coming from his fic after I stopped watching the show so a lot of his headcanons are up there too.

Mokuba Kaiba

Idea for a story

I have a couple drabbles based on @kintatsujo‘s age swap AU...and her In The Back Of My Brain AU, alot of her AUS give me ideas actually ( which of course id ask for permission before pursuing)  but nothing concrete.

Oh and the xmen crossover mentioned above.  Mokuba’s a fair share of that since in one of them Laura’s his bodyguard rather than Seto’s. ( in another Gozaburo gets Laura as protection for Seto while still being abusive and they both shake him off. Like I said it’s..it’s splintered into a lot)

His hair’s a liability I speak from experience.

I guess I’m a fan of the shared headcanon that Mokuba wears heelys. I like the idea that he’s not a genius like his brother and maybe he doesn’t get HIgh HIGH grades and maybe that’s okay ( as someone who has a complex relationship with academics I guess thats something I wish i saw more often yknow) because he’s smart in different ways.

I like the idea of Mokuba being athletically inclined like skate boarding or parkour or being involved in some sport at school I mean he roped climbed out a window in his intro episode so its not that outlandish.

I actually don’t have that many headcanons for this kid. I should fix that.

Noah Kaiba

First impression

Yikes. What  a freakin loon. ( first episode) Oh no..he’s lonely and abandoned. Oh no oh no oh no. ( later episodes in the arc) Okay but he’s still a mean dude ( when he turns ppl to stone) Oh no...he died...and he turned around at the last minute WHAT DO YOU MEAN I DONT GET TO SEE HIM AGAIN. ( at the end)

He deserved so much better. 

I love him. I cry and screech about him needing things monthly and sometimes weekly.

I guess-no I know a lot of people have done it better but I like the idea of a canondivergence where he’s spared and/or rescued by Seto.

I also like the idea of crossovers with shows like Digimon or Code Lyoko where you have digital worlds.

I just don’t want to be alone and i want him to have nice things okay. That’s..that’s all i want..from life.

Probs that he was an actual smol child and got a raw deal and Deserved Better. ( tm) ( you’ll find thats..my beat with a lot of characters ^-^:)

He...doesnt have any? In fics where he gets brought back like Paved With Good Intentions ( specifically Blue Eyes Violet Eyes) I like seeing his relationships with the other Kaibas. But as far as Canon goes...yeah there’s none.

Favorite headcanon

He’s very tactile. He liked running his hands through his dog’s fur and it always got to him that digitized it..wasn’t the same.

Following that he used to be very physically affectionate before Gozaburo started discouraging it.

Following that if he was to be brought out of the digital place/rescued I think he’d be pretty clingy. I mean because of the tactile thing and because..he’d need to reassure himself the world around him is real.  

If he had been allowed to live he’d probably think he didn’t deserve it/that he has to Atone for the stuff he’s done.

His whole world was his father and even when he hated him he loved him. He wanted nothing more than to be held by him again. That’s why the abandonment stung so much, there’s nothing like hating and being hurt by someone you love...and still having a part of you love them. A part of him still wonders what he did to get left behind. That’s a big part of what drove him to the deep end.

Warren Ellis’s Excalibur: Joys (and Curses) of Side Characters

I really used to love comic books.

I was a big X-Men collector back in the late ‘90s. The very-detailed costumes on the superheroes. The multiple part crossovers. And usually, writers had nice long runs on the books. And I followed the writers, not so much the artists. Okay, Ken Lashley…but…lol.

One of the runs that has always stuck with me was the British writer Warren Ellis’s run on Excalibur.

In hindsight, I could honestly admit that Excalibur never got a fair shake with fans, including myself. Most fans only saw the book as a place for third-tier superheroes. Yes, a lot of x-fans loved Nightcrawler, Shadowcat, and Rachel Summers Phoenix…but they were so separated from where they started from that no one took them seriously. That is…until Warren Ellis brought a sharp, dark direction to the series with the first arc of his run, titled the Soulsword Trilogy.  Not only did it focus on Shadowcat, the girl next door of the X-men family, but it used an old plot thread to reestablish the books’ connection to the main x-books of that time.

It was just a roller coaster from there. An awesome one at that. What stood out for me was an interview that he gave during that time where he talked about the characters and how he chose to approach the characters. He wanted them to be the European X-men. Not weak, secondary characters, but equal to the X-men proper. And a team was only as strong as each member. Ellis throughout his run took each character and developed them. So strong was his development that when the book reached issue 100…there was no doubt that this was a powerful team due to all the character/plot development that he had established from his first issue (issue 83) to that point. Third-tier no more, they took on a London Hellfire Club as a team with no weak links.

That got me thinking about side characters. My Darkenverse had a lot amount of them. The more books that I wrote, the more I had.

But was that a good thing?

JOYS OF A SIDE CHARACTER

A character is only as good as the supporting characters around them.

Sometimes a side character could be used to bring your character into focus. The arc for my character Aidan in Darkchilde has to do with him dealing with his witch heritage. The side character Bethanny was a foil for that, a woman who continued to challenge Aidan throughout the novel. There were times when she was wrong of course. But there were times when Aidan saw that she was indeed right, and he had to deal with his past…and his mother.

A side character could also be a catalyst for action to occur if your novel should…shall we say stall? Ebony in Darkened Soul started my main character Daniel exploring the world of the Nosferatu by her very appearance. Since his lover/creator Jared disliked being around the Nosferatu world…INSTANT CONFLICT!!! Bonus…it propelled the plot (why was Daniel hidden from his kind?) toward its reveal.

But of course, a side character should not be only one dimensional. And sometimes they are not. Jonathan Araby was a Nosferatu who has some answers to Daniel’s questions in Darkened Soul. His scenes are few and far in-between. However, his way with words and his general vibe revealed a hidden depth that the book only lightly rubbed up against. Best of all, when readers of Darkened Soul have talked to me, they mention Jonathan specifically. They felt it.

But of course, side characters also could be a problem…

CURSE OF A SIDE CHARACTER…

It happened across all forms of media…whether it was a book, a tv show, a movie, etc.

You know it.

There was the main character. And also there was the side character usually, a sidekick. And eventually, the sidekick started to get a bit of their own story. Then…the sidekick became more important than the main character.

My Darkenverse was no different. Darkchilde was a prime example. While the main characters were Ebony and Aidan, the main one was Ebony. In the process of writing Darkchilde, it felt like more and more of the major information was occurring in Aidan’s sections of the novel. Meanwhile, Ebony only appeared to be dealing with who to pick: Nicholas, the vicious rogue Nosferatu or Victor, the deadly and passionate Latino Nosferatu. The main theme of Darkchilde was identity. In Ebony’s case it was the question of when one was the person who held the people around them together…what happened when they were no longer needed.

Or what happened when there was a side character that was introduced as a way of revealing part of the plot and said character took off? Again, Darkchilde was a prime example of this in form of Antonio. There was no one like him in my Darkenverse before, a Nosferatu in transition from human looking to the Nosferatu a person would see in that old silent movie or even Blade 2 who was in the thrusts of insanity. He had been a beautiful way to reveal the main plot of the novel aka why Ebony and Aidan were being attacked.  

Then he appeared again. Unexpectedly.

I knew he would be at the masquerade party in the middle of the novel. So imagine my surprise (and Ebony’s) when he appeared in her suite at the hotel in a scene right out of Hellraiser. A dish of madness and horror. Clearly, there was interest on my part as a writer. Then when he met up with another of my side characters Epiphany, it was love (?) at first bite. They winded up having a little side plot in Darkchilde.

So what did one do when your side characters appear to take over?

COMPROMISING WITH SIDE CHARACTERS

By the time Warren Ellis finished his run on Excalibur, there was no one really who had not had any development except for (debatedly) Nightcrawler’s girlfriend Daytripper. All of the characters could stand on their own with their own story. The characters could also come together and form a powerful force, no one interchangeable. Watching a master work, constructing such a series from the ground up and seeing fresh and inventive ideas was such an inspiration to me growing up. I never forgot it. In fact, usually when I moved, Warren Ellis’s run was a run that I usually moved with.

So…I had to do the same. As the writer, I had to be able to use the knowledge of my side characters to know what was best for my books.

In the rewrite process for Darkchilde, Ebony’s past came more to the forefront. I had given hints in the first draft. In Darkened Soul, I had made a hint about a college experience with Ebony. In Darkchilde, I dove into it even more, fleshing it out through flashbacks. And those flashbacks were so developed that it revealed more her character. As I went back to writing the novel in normal time, Ebony felt more centered and less overshadowed by Aidan. I had found the way to strengthen her character.

That was the way to my side characters…compromise.

Jonathan Araby had depth. The exploration of that depth turned into Darkened Soul: Jonathan’s Tale. Epiphany showed an interest in Antonio and no time to explore because it took away from the main story? That was something I would be exploring in a forthcoming novella. Antonio kept randomly popping up, revealing hints about himself itching to be exploring? As I mentioned in my blog A Tale of Three ( http://someplace-that-is-else.tumblr.com/post/155053536518/a-tale-of-three-writing-update-12-27-16 ), I was working on a new Darkenverse short story collection. A lot of Antonio’s history would be explained in that.

So not only was I dealing with my characters one by one, I was getting new books out of it as well.

As for a team, I admitted there was one thing that I liked very much. The moment when Ebony and Aidan found met in the Bond Club, a Goth techno club that recurred in my novels. The fact that Ebony and Nicholas had been in one section of the novel while Aidan had been with Epiphany and icy Bethanny, and now they met? And from there, it was off to a dangerous night at a masquerade.
