Scientists Pinpoint Cause of Severe Morning Sickness (Azeen Ghorayshi, The New York Times, Dec 13 2023)
"More than two-thirds of pregnant women experience nausea and vomiting during the first trimester.
And roughly 2 percent of women are hospitalized for a condition called hyperemesis gravidarum, which causes relentless vomiting and nausea throughout the entire pregnancy.
The condition can lead to malnutrition, weight loss and dehydration.
It also increases the risk of preterm birth, pre-eclampsia and blood clots, threatening the life of the mother and the fetus.
Perhaps because nausea and vomiting are so common in pregnancy, doctors often overlook hyperemesis, dismissing its severe symptoms as psychological, even though it is the leading cause of hospitalization during early pregnancy, experts said.
Although celebrities like Kate Middleton and Amy Schumer have raised the condition’s profile in recent years by sharing their experiences, it remains understudied.
“I’ve been working on this for 20 years and yet there are still reports of women dying from this and women being mistreated,” said Dr. Marlena Fejzo, a geneticist at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine and a co-author of the new study.
She knows the pain of the condition firsthand.
During her second pregnancy, in 1999, Dr. Fejzo was unable to eat or drink without vomiting.
She rapidly lost weight, becoming too weak to stand or walk.
Her doctor was dismissive, suggesting she was exaggerating her symptoms to get attention.
She was eventually hospitalized, and miscarried at 15 weeks. (…)
The researchers found that women experiencing hyperemesis had significantly higher GDF15 levels during pregnancy than did those who had no symptoms.
But the hormone’s effect seems to depend on the woman’s sensitivity and exposure to the hormone before pregnancy.
The researchers found, for example, that women in Sri Lanka with a rare blood disorder causing chronically high levels of GDF15 rarely experienced nausea or vomiting in pregnancy.
“It completely obliterated all the nausea. They pretty much have next to zero symptoms in their pregnancies,” said Dr. Stephen O’Rahilly, an endocrinologist at Cambridge who led the research.
Dr. O’Rahilly hypothesized that prolonged exposure to GDF15 before pregnancy could have a protective effect, making women less sensitive to the sharp surge in the hormone caused by the developing fetus. (…)
The new study is powerful because it offers genetic proof of a causal relationship between GDF15 and the disease, said Dr. Rachel Freathy, who is a geneticist at the University of Exeter and was not involved in the study.
That will help the condition gain greater recognition, she said.
“There is kind of an assumption made by many people that women should just be able to cope with this,” Dr. Freathy said.
With this biological explanation, she said, “there will be more belief that this is a real thing rather than something in somebody’s head.”"

Physical Mental Health System Overhaul at Mod The Sims 4
Mods / Traits: Physical/Mental Health System Overhaul – Mod The Sims 4.
this mod brings a more realistic health system to the sims 4 game.
Added Developmental Disorders, Impairments, and Genetic Mutations. Give your Sim any of these in the pie menu. Added a Blood Donor and an Organ Donor career. Use your phone and book these careers. Added dieting. Your Sim can now diet. Added a redid attractiveness system. Your Sim can have turn ons and turn offs, and they can be attracted to males, females, or both.
Anyways there are three brand new categories in the actions tab on the currently selected Sim. These options are: The option to give your Sims a menstrual cycle, complete with all four phases of the human menstrual cycle irl. More illnesses of various severity and symptoms, plus some are contagious. These are also illnesses you can get irl. The option to give your Sim a blood type and/or blood disorder.
Anyways let’s start with the menstrual cycle. Firstly, the follicular phase. This phase does nothing really.. Second, the fertile window. In this phase, your Sim will have a x2 chance of getting pregnant. Thirdly, the ovulation phase/luteal phase. This is when your sim’s period is nearing. They will have symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, along with cervical mucus. Last but definitely least, is the period phase. This also has an influx of symptoms such as headaches, cramps, and sweet cravings.
Please note it does not change phases on its own, you have to do that physically. If you don’t want your sim to get their period, then either remove this module or don’t click any of the options. Illnesses:Illnesses are now divided into six categories, with a combination of physical and mental illnesses. The categories/illnesses are: Mild illnesses: Influenza, Stomach Flu, Common Cold Severe illnesses: AIDS, Dementia, Cancer Chronic illnesses: Insomnia, Asthma, Seasonal Allergies Mental illnesses: Depression, OCD, PTSD Eating disorders: Anorexia, Bulimia Parasites: Tick, Intestinal Worms, Head Lice
Blood Types: Your Sims can now have blood types! I redid this mod because I wasn’t happy that the first one took up a trait slot. Blood types are divided into two categories. There is:RH Positive and RH NegativeBoth of them are A, B, O, and AB, the RH factor determines whether positive or negative.I also added some blood disorders, there is currently four of them in the game.

I think I might have endometriosis and I dont know what to do. Is it worth trying to get a diagnosis? Because I feel like they cant do anything about it either way. On one hand i feel like it would be a relief to hear that it isn't normal and that i am not weak just because I cant deal with some regular period cramps. I dont think its normal to throw up because of the pain and lay on the bathroom floor half passed out because of nausea and pain for hours in the middle of the night, but at the same time muy cramps only lasts for like a day or two so I feel like im just exaggerating. I want to be validated in a way but im nervous about it not actually being anything wrong if that makes sense.
Also i feel like the only thing doctors can do is prescribe birth control and I have been on one kind (one with only one of the ususal substances) and while it have lowered the pain to only very occasional tame cramps I dont really like it because of the spotting because it is so irregular that I have had to wear pads for like a year and i dont really trust that it works, i would like it to get rid of the whole problem and stop all pain. And the doctors wont put me on regular birth control because im fat so my bmi is too high which means a higher risk for blood clots. Is there anything else they can do? I know some people get hysterectomies but I dont want that now at least cause i think I might want to have kids in the future. Is there anything else they can do that makes it worth it to fight for a possible diagnosis since that may take years and be difficult or should i just cope with it since my symptoms isn't really that bad?
(Also i just ran out of birth control and haven't decided what to do so im really scared that my period will come back now and it will hurt)
First of all, I think you should find a new doctor. I am also “fat” and I NEVER had any doctor refuse to put me on regular birth control. BC has risks and it has pros and cons, as long as your doc is explaining all of that to you they should let YOU make that decision about your own body.
If you are in horrific pain it is not normal. If you are puking and passing out because of cramps that isn’t normal. You are not exaggerating or overreacting. You deserve to get treatment. You deserve to be in less pain. You deserve to have more convenience.
I urge you to try to get a new birth control (for example I’m on the depo shot, least amount of pain I have been in for years on this BC) and if your doc won’t do it find a different one who will. Remember doctors are there to listen to you and help you.
There are various home remedies to try for endo but there is no cure. Birth control will help. The only sure fire way to get rid of it is laparoscopic surgery, and this will only help for some time because the endometriosis will just grow back. (And how much it will help depends on the competence/experience of the surgeon doing it.) I believe I’ve read that even a full hysterectomy doesn’t cure endo.
I’m sorry you’re going through this and I hope you can get the care and treatment you need.

*DR. SMITA GOEL HOMEOPATHY CLINIC*
Gangrene is a term that describes dead or dying body tissue(s) that occurs because the local blood supply to the tissue is either lost or is inadequate to keep the tissue alive. Gangrene has been recognized as a localized area of tissue death since ancient times.
There are two major types of gangrene, referred to as dry and wet. Many cases of dry gangrene are not infected. All cases of wet gangrene are considered to be infected, almost always by bacteria. Mainly both wet and dry gangrene to occur are the digits (fingers and toes) and other extremities (hands, arms, feet, and legs).
Symptoms and Signs
Its depends on the type of gangrene, the location of the gangrene (internal organs, skin, extremity, etc.), and how much the gangrene has progressed.
In dry gangrene, the skin is hard and black or purplish. In earlier stages, the skin may be pale and either numb or painful.
In wet gangrene, the affected area will be swollen with blisters oozing fluid; and the area may be red and warm with a foul odor.
Gas gangrene causes severe pain, fever, and the skin will crackle like bubble wrap when pressed.
Fournier's gangrene will cause redness and swelling in the genital area. Patients with gangrene affecting internal organs such as the gallbladder or intestines will typically be very sick with fever, low blood pressure, and severe pain.
Wet gangrene (also termed moist gangrene) is the most dangerous type of gangrene because if it is left untreated, the patient usually develops sepsis and dies within a few hours or days. Wet gangrene results from an untreated (or inadequately treated) infection in the body where the local blood supply has been reduced or stopped by tissue swelling, gas production in tissue, bacterial toxins, or all of these factors in combination. Additionally, conditions that compromise the blood flow such as burns or vascular trauma (for example, a knife wound that cuts off arterial flow) can occur first. Then the locally compromised body part or area becomes infected, which can result in wet gangrene. Wet gangrene is the type that is most commonly thought of when the term gangrene is used. Wet gangrene often produces an oozing fluid or pus, hence the term "wet." Early stages of wet gangrene may include:
• Signs of infection
• Aching pain with swelling
• A reddish skin color or blanched appearance if the area is raised above level of the heart
• Coolness on the skin surface
• Ulceration
• A crackly sensation when the skin is pressed due to gas in the tissue
These stages may progress rapidly over hours to days
Dry gangrene, if it does not become infected and progress to wet gangrene, usually does not cause sepsis or death. However, it can result in local tissue death with the tissue eventually being sloughed off. Usually, the progression of dry gangrene is much slower (days to months) than wet gangrene because the vascular compromise slowly develops due to the progression of diseases that can result in local arterial blockage over time.
The stages are similar to wet gangrene (see above), except there is no infection, pus, wetness, or crackly-feeling skin, because there is no gas production in the uninfected tissue. Disease-fighting cells are not recruited to the area.
There are many diseases that may lead to dry gangrene; the most common are:
• Diabetes
• Arteriosclerosis
• Tobacco addiction (smoking)
Infrequently, dry gangrene can occur quickly, over a few hours to days, when a rapid arterial blockage occurs in part of the body (for example, an arterial blood clot suddenly occludes a small artery to a toe). Dry gangrene often produces cool, dry, and discolored appendages (sometimes termed "mummified") with no oozing fluid or pus, hence the term "dry."
The common cause of either wet or dry gangrene is loss of an effective local blood supply to any tissue. Loss of the blood supply means tissues are deprived of oxygen, thus causing the cells in the tissue to die. The most common causes of tissue blood supply loss and major risk factors for gangrene are:
• Infections
• Trauma
• Poor wound healing
• Diseases like diabetes mellitus that can affect blood vessels (usually arteries)
Rarely, Raynaud's disease can lead to gangrene of fingers and toes.
Dry gangrene causes
Dry gangrene can result from any of a number of diseases or mechanisms that can reduce or block arterial blood flow. Although the most common diseases that can cause dry gangrene are diabetes, arteriosclerosis, and tobacco addiction, there are many other lesser-known diseases that can lead to this problem. For example, some autoimmune diseases that attack blood vessels (vasculitis syndromes) may result in enough damage to cause dry gangrene. In other cases, dry gangrene can result from various external mechanisms such as burns, frostbite, and arterial trauma caused by accidents, wounds, or surgery.
Causes
Wet gangrene can result from all the causes listed above for dry gangrene but always includes infection. In some cases of wet gangrene, the initial cause is considered to be the infection. Although many types of organisms (mainly bacteria) are known to participate in wet gangrene infections, the classic bacterial organism or bacterial infection associated with wet gangrene is Clostridium perfringens, an anaerobic bacterium that grows best when oxygen is not present. These bacteria can cause myonecrosis (muscle fiber death) with exotoxins and produce gas bubbles in the dead and dying tissues (gas gangrene). This leads to localized swelling with compression and loss of blood flow to tissue, allowing bacteria to extend the infection to the connective tissue of muscle, skin, and other areas, causing necrotizing fasciitis (death of connective tissue). Necrotizing fasciitis, in turn, allows the infection to spread, frequently with speed, out of the locally infected site to adjacent areas or to the bloodstream (sepsis). Although this cascade of events is seen with Clostridium perfringens often as the single infecting organism type, it can be caused by many other organisms such as Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Bacteroides, and Escherichia. Usually two or more of these organisms occur in the infection, and many investigators suggest that together the organisms help each other (synergy) to extend the infection.
There are several subtypes of wet gangrene:
• Gas gangrene means gas is present in the gangrenous tissue as described above.
• Fournier's gangrene is gangrene with necrotizing fasciitis that occurs mainly in male genitalia.
• Internal gangrene is a general term that means gangrene is affecting an internal organ. Internal gangrene types are usually named after the organ that is affected (for example, gangrene of the appendix, gangrenous gallbladder, and gangrenous bowel involving the colon, rectum, or other areas).
Leprosy (Hansen's disease) is not a variant of wet or dry gangrene, although it can result in local tissue loss that can resemble gangrene. It is a disease caused by bacteria that are transferred usually from person to person. It causes nodules and sores. M. leprae infection slowly destroys peripheral nerve endings in digits and mucous membranes over a period of years with loss of sensation. Digits and other local areas get repeatedly injured due to sensation loss and can become mutilated or develop atrophy and be sloughed off. However, if the chronic lesions become infected with other organisms, wet gangrene can develop in patients with leprosy.

Headcanon redone: Were blood
My previous headcanon for this is hugely overcomplicated so I'm going to simplify and tweak where necessary. As with all my headcanons involving vampires: I can only speak for my own characters, and no one is required to make their character adhere to my headcanons, whether vampire or werebeast.
Vampire bites werebeast not in beast form: The blood tastes largely similar to other mortal blood, perhaps a bit earthier or spicier depending on the were. Some do not like it, some like it a lot. Dal likes it a lot, if he can get past the smell of a werebeast.
Because the beast blood is in a sort of low-activity state, it can be incorporated almost like other blood, although not in the same quantities. Too much beast blood, dormant or not, will cause a reaction of vomiting to prevent too much from getting incorporated into the system. One might call it a sipping drink to savor rather than a chugging drink. A kind of spice you can handle in moderation, but overindulging will give you a bad night.
Vampire bites werebeast that is in beast form: Terrible idea. Awful. Even besides scales or fur, the blood is not appetizing at all. And for good reason. Being saturated with all that beast blood in its active state makes it conflict with vampirism and causes an immediate reaction to try and keep it from entering the system through the stomach lining. Which means retching and vomiting.
If, somehow, a significant quantity of beast blood makes it into the circulatory system, the vampire becomes ill--symptoms include full body aches, fever, sweats, and extreme thirst as a desire to saturate the system with new blood. But this is difficult to achieve thanks to the typical response of vomiting before it can reach that state.
In most people, a vampire bite, aside from the initial pain and general symptoms of having a wound, may cause some mild itching from the saliva. Anticoagulants in a vampire's saliva also prevent clotting and so the wound will bleed a bit longer than usual.
In a werebeast, the reaction is closer to a mild-to-moderate envenomation, owing to the saliva--which contains the vampirism disease--entering the werebeast's blood stream and conflicting with their beast blood. Symptoms include burning at the site of the bite, moderate to severe itching, tenderness, inflammation, and muscle soreness around the affected area.
Severity depends on whether the werebeast has transformed or not. A transformed werebeast will have more severe symptoms due to the immediate and more aggressive response from their immune system, but it will resolve more quickly. Whereas a werebeast in their mortal form will have milder symptoms that remain longer.
In all fairness, a werebeast biting a vampire elicits much the same reaction, with a transformed werebeast having a more dangerous bite for a variety of reasons.
A werebeast ingesting vampire blood likely does not have the same danger as a vampire ingesting werebeast blood, partially owing to the werebeast's size and the fact that the blood is digested in their powerful stomach acid rather than being incorporated into the bloodstream to fuel their circulatory system, but is still very unpleasant.
Vampires and werewolves are immune to being turned by each other, and the bites themselves are unlikely to kill, but it does not mean there is no reaction when their body senses an intruder.

Fascinating flora #3
Garlic
Part of the Amaryllidaceae family, long with onions, leeks, chives, and shallots, garlic is pungent and savory, used originally to enhance the flavor profile of Mediterranean and Asian dishes. The plant has spread over the entire world and has become a household staple.
Plant it in the fall, let it sit in the ground over winter, maybe enjoy the scapes(leaves) in the spring, and then harvest in the middle of summer.
During the spring, planted garlic will grow lovely spherical clumps in f flowers that usually range from white to purple. The flower shares it name with the garlic family name- alliums.
Nearly every part of the plant is edible, the scapes, stem, and flower are a more mild flavor of garlic, and can be used in a variety of dishes. I’ve seen the scapes especially common in stir fries, and the flowers pan seared or fried in oil, though there are tons of other ways to prepare the plant.
Garlic is a natural decongestant and anticoagulant. It can help relieve symptoms associated with allergies and colds, especially stuffy or runny noses, and is good for aiding in the prevention of blood clots. It also helps the body reduce blood pressure, and may be just as effective as blood pressure medications when used in the right doses.
Freshly chopped or cut garlic forms short lasting sulphuric compounds that make up most of its health benefits.
It boosts immune function, reducing the chances of catching colds and the severity and length of colds.
In witchcraft and spirituality, garlic repels evil spirits and negative entities. Hanging it in your home will bless the property and keep negativity away. Garlic is a protector, it can be used to greatly strengthen wards and as part of casting circles.

the fanfic author's curse real as hell I just got back from the hospital for the second time this week bc I had to get my blood drawn. I got It drawn at the hospital for the first time, but that was to test for clotting. They wanna test again for immune disorders because I had a pretty bad pleurisy (Which is also the reason why I went to the hospital the first time!) Then I had to see my Cardiologist, who told me that my joint issues may be related to my Orthostatic Hypotension. They noted that because I have loadsa other symptoms I might have EDS. Of course, I was recommended to talk to a rheumatologist about this. then they sent me home with a heart moniter AGAIN! i hate the stickers bc they irritate my skin >:P
I can't believe its taken this long to get a real diagnoses for any of this, its all pretty recent. But they've always been there. anyways, i'm grateful I was able to get any of this, even the fucking dumb excuses like "growing pains" or an "anxious heart" when I was younger.

Health update.
I know I keep vanishing and then coming back randomly but trust me it's not because I don't want to be here, it's because of everything I have going on right now. Finding the time or energy is really fucking hard right now. I do lurk in the back ground and I am still working on finishing the pic spams...but again...I have so much going on now that it's unreal.
I work two jobs. Me and my partner bought our first home a year ago. We are a couple months closer to move in but its just been such a long and stressful journey to get this far. I'm working two jobs so we can afford to do the things we want now in terms of fixing it up so we don't have to ever do it again. I am a high school teacher during the week and a worker in an Autisic Centre of the weekends and school holidays.
As some of you may know, 8 years ago I suddenly was unable to walk properly due to pain in my hips. After xrays, they found I have Dysplasia in both my hips which caused arthritis in both. So I was thrown into the world of being disabled as I couldn't walk properly and I was in so much pain. 2 years later, after many attempts to save both hips, I had total hip replacement of the right hip. 6 months later I had a total hip replacement of the left hip. Recovery was awful. Months later I started suffering with pain in multiple joints. My knees would give way. My ankles would swell. My left sholder was very painful when moving it and would lock quite a bit. Going to the doctors to speak about this would result in me being told that it's just pain from the hips travelling down to my joints and up my back.
So I carried on. I had to. I didn't have another choice. Couple of months later, couple of ER/A&E trips, I got sent to a rheumatology consultant. He did a blood draw and said that I had no sign of an autoimmune problem so it must be Fybromyalgia. Now. I do believe I have Fybromyalgia. I have the emotional trauma from growing up with an abusive, alcoholic & gambling addict dad. Developed eating disorder from the age of 18...and I've had the physical trauma of the back to back surgery's. So it's fits. All the symptoms fit.
However, with my family's history of arthritis at very young ages (my mum needed them at 20, my auntie needed them at 23, my nan needed them in her 20s and I needed them at 21). Most of those woman have arthritis in a lot of other joints to. So I needed to push for further investigation.
My left hip replacement hasn't felt good at all since it was done. It is that bad that I actively call it my "bad hip". And tell people we don't celebrate that hips birthday. The pain has gotten much much MUCH worse. If I stand for more than 30 seconds on that hip, I get stuck. I can be taken out of action for days if I do too much activity because of the pain. I take 80mg of slow release morphine every day and other pain killers. That doesn't help much at all.
So, I asked my rheumatologist to please xray the hip replacements and please xray my sholder as it was getting worse. Its hard when you get a diagnosis of fibromyalgia because doctors like to see that and not look any further then you are complaining of joint pain. It's very hard.
I got the xrays.
Sholder: he rang me with the results. His statement was that I have Dysplasia in my sholder. The joints don't fit properly which is what is causing the pain. He also stated that this hasn't changed since the last xray I had done when it was originally flagged....excuse me? I was so confused. Eventually I remembered that during my second hip replacement, the hospital suspected a post op blood clot in my lungs, so they did a chest xray. When this xray was done, there was a red flag on it that said I had Dysplasia of the sholder. That was 5 years ago. No one said a word to me. It wasn't in my notes. When I say I was so angry, I was soooooo angry. But at least I had an answer other than "oh you have fibro, that's what's causing the pain." Since then, no one has been in touch about a treatment plan etc. That will be my next issue to fight for I guess.
The Hip: the replacements looked fine. They were not loose. Which is brilliant! However, I had extreme pain from it. So I was referred to a hip specialist. This guy was the guy who did all of mu family hip replacements so it was nice to be under him if there was a problem with my replacement. I went to see him 2 weeks ago. He sent me for a CT on my pelvis. He agreed that there was no issue with the hip other than nerve pain which isn't really worth opening back up again due to the risk of infection and the fact that I will need new hips in 10 years anyway. So, Great. Nothing wrong with the hips. I'll just have to get on with the nerve pain. He told me he had bad news though. He pulled up my CT scan and showed me that I had arthritis in sacratic joint on the left side. That is what is causing me the intense pain. That is what is causing me to get stuck in certain positions. All he can offer me for that first is injections into the joint and physical therapy. He told me that it's going to be a long journey with a lot of work.
When I say I sobbed. I sobbed. Another fucking thing that is wrong with my body. I feel like I am just broken. I find it hard to put into words how all this makes me feel but tbh nothing was as bad as it was when I got a letter through the door from the same doctor.
He mentioned everything he said in the appointment about the joint issue on the left side. But he also had taken another look at my scans and he said there is degenerative changes in my lumbar spine. Arthritis in the bottom half of my spine. What do I do with that? I was in work when I read that and honestly I did my best to keep it together but I couldn't do it. I just cried my eyes out. I think reading his words, "Elisha knows that this is something she will have to deal with for many years and it is not going to go away." I am honestly broken. I don't know why this is happening. I don't get how I've gone from where I was before I turned 21, perfectly healthy other than the eating disorder, to being 30 with arthritis in the bottom half of my spine, arthritis in my joint that connects the pelvis to the spine, 2 hip replacements & a Dysplastic sholder. I honestly feel like I should ask for a whole body scan just to get it out of the way. Just find out everything.
What also has freaked me out is that he said I have myelitis in my spine. If you do your research you will understand why this has freaked me the fucked out.
I do my best to keep it together because I know there are people with a much worse medical history but I am just broken. I am always in pain. But I'm trying to keep going. I worked to hard to give up and become bed bound, but I know there will come a time when this won't be something I can stop.
I had to get this off my chest as I am sure my partner is sick of hearing it as he's living with it daily while being with me. And I know it upsets my mum, she feels guilty for some reason.
But yeah, that's the update. This is why I go missing but school holidays is when I can come back more often

Experts Advise, Offer New Vaccination for Pet Rabbits
Tumblr media
COVID-19 hasn’t been the only global pandemic arriving on our shores recently. A new variant of rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV), previously common in wild rabbits in Europe, Asia, and Australia, was first detected in the United States in early 2020. It has now spread to multiple states in the U.S., particularly the western states.
How to Get the Vaccine
Vaccination clinics for RHDV will be held on the following dates at Veterinary Medicine South Clinic 2100 S Goodwin Ave, Urbana. Clinic Dates: * August 18, 2023 * September 15, 2023 * October 13, 2023
Call for an appointment: 217-244-2555
On July 13, 2023, the first case of RHDV was detected in the state of Illinois in a pet rabbit. The case was in Cook County. Prior to this detection, the disease had not been diagnosed in wild or domestic rabbits. This detection raises the level of concern for the health implications of both wild and domestic rabbits within Illinois.
If RHDV is detected or suspected in wild or domestic rabbits, it must be reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health.
Dr. Michelle Borsdorf, a board-certified specialist in zoological medicine at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Urbana, recommends that all pet rabbits be vaccinated against this new variant (RHDV2), which is more dangerous than earlier forms of the virus. This variant of RHDV has 70% to 100% mortality rates in pet rabbits.
Its presence in Illinois emphasizes the need to act now to vaccinate and protect against this disease!
What Is RHDV?
Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus is a member of the calicivirus family. Other viruses in this family that do not cause rabbit health issues include norovirus, the most common cause of gastroenteritis (vomiting and diarrhea) in people, and a feline virus that causes respiratory disease.
RHDV infects wild and domestic species of rabbits and is highly contagious. It does not infect people or other animals. The virus travels through the blood stream of an infected rabbit and rapidly damages the cells of the liver. The liver makes proteins used in forming blood clots, and the classic form of RHDV causes uncontrollable bleeding in rabbits.
Clinical signs of rabbits infected with this virus will primarily include bleeding from the eyes, nose, or mouth, as well as jaundice (yellow discoloration of eyes and skin), which are related to severe liver dysfunction or failure. Affected rabbits may also develop respiratory or neurologic symptoms, or even present with more generalized signs of illness such as lethargy, reduced appetite, and lack of defecation or urination.
“Additionally, some rabbits do not exhibit symptoms prior to succumbing to the disease. This outcome, known as sudden death, illustrates how rapidly the disease can progress,” says Dr. Borsdorf.
How Does RHDV Spread?
Unfortunately, the virus survives well in any environment. Infected wild rabbits may shed the virus outside, and the virus can then be carried into the home on people’s clothing or shoes and introduced to pet rabbits. Any rabbit exposed to blood, urine, or feces of an infected rabbit could develop infection.
Because RHDV is spread between rabbits, Dr. Borsdorf advises taking steps in your home to reduce the risk of RHDV infection.
Do not allow your pet rabbit to graze in outdoor areas that are frequented by wild rabbits.
Ensure that shoes worn outside are not worn in areas of the home where your pet rabbit has access.
Weeds and flowers from outdoor areas frequented by wild rabbits should not be fed to pet rabbits.
Always wash your hands before and after handling rabbits.
Vaccinate your pet rabbit.
Vaccination Against RHDV
In other countries where RHDV circulates, vaccinations against the virus are given to pet rabbits. Now that the threat to rabbit health is present in the U.S., the U.S. Department of Agriculture has authorized emergency use of the vaccine here. Distribution of the vaccine to veterinarians began in 2021.
Although the vaccine does not yet have full FDA approval, the approval process is ongoing. Preliminary research suggests that the vaccine is safe and effective in preventing infection. This is based on a challenge study performed where 100% of vaccinated rabbits survived when exposed to the virus, while 70% of the unvaccinated rabbits died from the disease.
Side effects of the vaccine have included mild swelling at the injection site and mild fever or lethargy for a few days after the vaccine is administered. To be effective, the vaccine requires two doses administered at least 3 weeks apart, and annual boosters thereafter.
Vaccination at the University of Illinois
The zoological medicine service will continue hosting vaccine clinics to administer vaccines and their boosters to pet rabbits once monthly. (See sidebar above for the current list of dates.) Veterinary interns, residents, and students as well as certified veterinary technicians will be involved in this process under supervision of faculty members. including Dr. Borsdorf, head of the zoological medicine service.
Because the clinic is focused on delivering vaccine to healthy animals, no diagnostic testing will be performed at that time.

June 1998 - Released from Hospital (catalog of health)
((Content warning: medical / hospital))
Genre: sickfic
Romance level: none
Angst level: 2/5
Draco's headspace: pensive
((words: ~1500))
------------------------------------
Draco was finally, finally released from the healers' clutches in the middle of June, after almost a full month in the hospital. He was wearing a new piece of jewellery, a cuff on his wrist that was charmed to display his heartbeat when touched in the right spot. He was also in possession of a long list of cautions and advice about his health, and a thick catalogue of potions and charms he'd be depending on going forward, for presumably forever.
The curse Voldemort had laid on him was apparently unliftable, and he would have to live this way.
His badly drained life force left him with reduced response to healing magic, which drew on the subject's own life to speed up their body's recovery. Healing resistance meant that even injuries which could normally be dealt with at home or even ignored might mean a trip to a Healer for more advanced treatment. Because his blood was thin, any bleeding wound needed to be attended to immediately, because it wouldn't stop bleeding on its own, and they had already seen what blood-clotting potions could do to him. He should also avoid harsh physical contact and be aware of any bruises that kept getting larger, more painful, or firmer to the touch, which would mean uncontrolled internal bleeding.
The more stress he put on his heart, the sooner it would wear out the enchantments that were strengthening it and protecting his health, which meant ideally he should avoid doing anything physically strenuous or overly stressful.
He had a series of potions specifically for his heart: one he was supposed to take daily to suppress its speed, one he was supposed to take whenever he noticed it beating irregularly — which was intended to make it skip beats until it got back to normal, and which he hated the feeling of — and the sedative cocktail for when it was dangerously out of control.
If his skin started feeling cold or clammy, he started hyperventilating or coughing up blood, became disoriented or unconscious, or the veins in his neck stood out, he needed to check his pulse, and if it was extremely weak and fast, it meant his heart wasn't pumping enough blood and he was going into shock. He needed a blood replenishing potion immediately and then he needed to have his heart slowed down, or be sent to the hospital if it wouldn't.
It shouldn't happen again, but since it already had once, he should be aware and alert for it: any mental symptoms like they had seen, like difficulty speaking, difficulty standing, walking, or using his hands, loss of vision, or numbness or weakness on one side of his body, were an emergency that meant there was a blood clot in his brain and required a blood-thinning potion and to go to the hospital.
He probably wasn't going to have a heart attack — but he might. He would probably know by severe chest pain that spread out and didn't ease up after a few minutes, maybe with sweating or nausea. That would mean coming back to the hospital to have another procedure done.
The way his heart worked now, it meant that discomfort or pain in his chest or fainting were a constant threat that meant his heart needed to be slowed down, but weren't in themselves especially serious. He would probably always have difficulty breathing and fatigue, and there was a constant risk of dizziness or fainting, which meant he should avoid anything that would be physically risky if he suddenly fell, like flying a broom.
No one had really come to a consensus on whether his nightmares and terrors were natural or part of a curse, but either way Dreamless Sleep potions were going to be his saviour. Overreliance on them, though, had basically the same side effects as not sleeping at all, so they determined that the schedule they had started him on, an hour at the beginning of the night to lead into normal sleep, was the best course. If he woke up within a few hours, he could have a second hour of it to go back to sleep. And if he didn't sleep for more than two days and couldn't make himself, there was a sleeping potion to force it.
Conversely, there were Wiggenweld stamina potions to help keep his energy up during the day despite his poor sleep quality, and stronger stimulants if he really needed it, to be used in moderation. If his mind was too foggy, he had a potion to sharpen his attention, but it had side effects on mood and impulse control.
Those were just the potions he would expect to regularly need — on top of that were a vast array of potions or charms he might need at any time. Pepperup potions if he got too cold or ill, painkillers, stomach settling potions, cheering potions if his mood became too dark, calming draughts, mind numbing to help him forget his dreams, although he didn't like them because they normally meant he was out of it for the first couple hours of his day…
With so many potions, potentially building up in his body or interacting, he had to have doses of All-Antidote on hand, and he was expected to spend every twelfth week completely without potions, both to clear them out of his system and to check on the state of his health without them.
Most, though not all, of the potions had a spell counterpart that could be used to mitigate the risk of potion toxicity, but it wasn't always a better option. The strength and dosage of the potions could be carefully formulated and measured for him, while the spells could vary in their power, or be miscast in a stressful situation. The potions were more reliable, and could be self-administered, unlike a lot of the spells.
He would probably always be cold, just because he was seemingly always going to be underweight — not a result of his heart, but more directly from his drained vitality and lack of appetite, which either stemmed from or interacted poorly with his tendency to nausea and his occasional vomiting from his dreams. It had taken him weeks to put on enough weight for them to be confident releasing him from care, and that would have to be watched. There were a variety of potions and spells that were supposed to help that — fattening potions that were supposed to extract nutrients from food, hunger hexes, flavour enhancers that were meant to make foods irresistible — but none had proven very effective for him; the aversion to eating was in his mind, not his body, for some reason that wasn't very obvious, but probably had to do with not wanting to be sick. They thought his appetite might come back if the nausea was properly managed for long enough.
He was also going to be vulnerable to ailments — colds, toxins, diseases like the Dragon Pox that had killed his grandparents. They recommended he try to minimise contact with people so that he could reduce the risk of catching anything.
He had to admit that he did feel better than when he had been admitted. What they had done for his heart made him feel almost normal, at least comparatively; he hadn't noticed how badly he had been breathing before, until he could actually take a deep breath again, and his heartbeat was noticeably stronger and not always so fast now, especially if he took the potion every day. Their schedule with the Dreamless Sleep potion, too; he didn't enjoy it, because he knew it meant every time he went to sleep he was going to dream, but he couldn't deny it did give him five or six hours of sleep almost every night, which wasn't bad, comparatively.
Put all together, the best advice for his health was to renovate a reasonably small section of the ground floor of the Manor with everything he would need, so that he wouldn't have to walk very far or climb stairs; deal with people via owl rather than in person so that they couldn't get him sick; avoid going out because Apparating could be dangerous if he lost focus, the floo would aggravate his vertigo, and a fall from a broom could be deadly and he should probably never be on one again. He could enjoy the excitement of sporting events vicariously, via paper or wireless, but be sure not to get too excited, and at the same time try to avoid anything too mentally taxing if his brain was foggy so he wouldn't have to take an unnecessary potion. Be sure to stay near his bed or a nice seat where he could rest if his heart got a little tired, eat his precisely balanced meals at precise times despite how unpalatable it may seem at the time, drink water, don't drink alcohol, go to sleep early every night and just never mind the dreams, take his potions, see the healers regularly, keep records, keep notes, keep a schedule, follow instructions…
It sounded perfectly awful.
And it would probably be effective — if he did all that, he might live to be forty-five.

So with all the abortion talk going on and a lot of people promoting mail-order pharmaceutical abortion, I wanted to go over some of what that entails. I'm going to try not to use too much jargon to make this accessible for folks, but please don't hesitate to PM me with questions. I'm writing this from my experiences as a nursing student and as someone who has taken abortion doula training, but as with anything there may be errors in my post. Please feel free to point them out, and always make sure to do your own research and contact knowledgeable, trustworthy people.
MEDICATIONS
A lot of people see it as an "abortion pill" but actually it is a pair of medications that you're given.
The first is mifepristone or methotrexate and the second is misoprostol. Sometimes all three are used.
Mifepristone is a hormone blocker which blocks progesterone. When a pregnancy is implanted, the fertilized egg tells your body to lower your estrogen and raise your progesterone to maintain the pregnancy. When you take mifepristone, it blocks progesterone so that your pregnancy doesnt continue to develop. It's given in concert with misoprostol to both stop a pregnancy and expel it altogether.
Methotrexate is a bit different. It is also used in concert with misoprostol, but it is actually a cancer drug that is an immuno-suppressant. Its purpose in pharmaceutical abortion is to inhibit rapidly developing cells (as would be present with cancer or with a newly formed embryo) . It can also cause DNA mutations and be teratogenic (cause mutations in an embryo/fetus) which may prevent the pregnancy from being viable. It's less commonly used than mifepristone and may also be given with both misoprostol and mifepristone.
Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin. Prostaglandins are substances produced at the site of inflammation in the body and also help to protect your stomach lining. This is why misoprostol is often given for ulcers caused by NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) because NSAIDs block prostaglandin production which leads to less protective mucous and thus, ulcers.
But! Prostaglandins can also begin uterine contractions, which are necessary to expel uterine contents, whether that be during your menstrual cycle, a birth or an abortion. So misoprostol is used to begin uterine contractions to help expel a pregnancy. It can also help "ripen" the cervix to make it easier for tissues to be expelled, and these medications can also be topical prostaglandin. (topical meaning, applied directly to the cervix either as a cream or a pill that is placed up against it)
SAFETY & CIRCUMSTANCES
Pharmaceutical abortion is safe in most cases, but generally the cut off is 10-12 weeks of pregnancy. The embryo must still be small enough to pass through your cervix which, while prostaglandins may help relax it slightly, is still a supremely small space. The biggest risks are hemorrhage (excessive bleeding) or failure to expel tissues.
In the latter case, if any embryonic tissue or clots are retained in the uterus, it could cause an infection that may lead to sepsis. Make sure to monitor for symptoms of infection including fever, malaise, excessive pain, confusion, shaking/chills, heavy bleeding past the first 12hrs after you took the pills or as defined below, and low blood pressure/feeling light-headed or fainting upon standing.
Bleeding is expected with an abortion - it's basically a heavy period and will likely last a few days. However, bleeding should be heaviest in the first 12 hours and be minimal following that. You should seek immediate assistance if you are passing clots larger than an inch (2.5cm) in diameter, if you are soaking a menstrual pad with blood in less than 2 hours, or are bleeding heavily past the first 12hrs.
There are many people out there selling snake oil and saying that they have ways to stop a pharmaceutical abortion once you have already ingested the pills. These claims are false, you cannot stop a pharmaceutical abortion that has already begun. Many of these concoctions or remedies or what have you can be dangerous or cause complications. If you feel on the fence about having an abortion, I strongly suggest you seek options counseling from Planned Parenthood or another choice-based organization to help you clarify your needs so you can be sure this is the best option for you. You cannot stop it once it starts.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Pharmaceutical abortions can be painful. Like I said, they're like a heavy period - there will be cramping, bleeding, maybe bloating and general discomfort in addition to potential emotional reactions to having an abortion. In general, you can take mild pain medications like ibuprofen (advil/Motrin) or acetaminophen/paracetamol (tylenol), but with anything always check with a trusted medical professional about any medications you take, even over-the-counter ones.
I strongly suggest having someone with you or checking in with you when you are going through this process just to make sure you're safe and supported. Planned Parenthood may offer support. You could also look for abortion doulas in your area - many doulas I know offer free abortion support and there may be some around you doing this work covertly. I suggest looking up Birthing Advocacy Doula Training to find resources, workers or organizations in your area.
Abortion can mean different things to different people, and everyone's experiences or reasons will vary. I had my abortion because I was 19, broke, and in a terrible relationship - but I still mourned the loss of what I felt could have been my child. I felt guilty for having gotten pregnant and not being more careful with birth control. That being said, I'm incredibly grateful that I had abortion services in my area and people around me who were supportive.
On the flip side, my mother has had 3 abortions and thinks nothing of it. She never felt guilt, never looked back, only felt relief.
Everyone is different and I strongly suggest seeking emotional support before and after because you never know what kinds of things might come up. It may be difficult, or it may be easy - only you can determine your needs, values and responses.
I hope this was helpful. Again, please don't hesitate to reach out to me for questions or support, or if you see some info that isn't correct in this post. Stay safe, keep yourself informed, and know that your choice is the only one that matters.

Ayurvedic Treatment & Therapies for Varicose Veins
Tumblr media
In Ayurveda, varicose veins are considered a condition related to impaired blood circulation and imbalance in the doshas (energetic forces). Ayurvedic treatments and therapies aim to balance the doshas, improve blood flow, and reduce symptoms associated with varicose veins. It is important to consult with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner for a personalised treatment plan. Here are some Ayurvedic treatments and therapies commonly used for varicose veins:
Panchakarma: Panchakarma is an Ayurvedic detoxification and rejuvenation therapy practised at some of the best Wellness Centres in Prayagraj that involve a series of five therapeutic procedures to eliminate toxins from the body, balance the doshas, and restore overall health and well-being.
Virechana: Virechana is a specific therapeutic procedure in Ayurveda aimed at purifying the body by inducing controlled purgation. It involves the administration of herbal laxatives to eliminate toxins and balance the doshas, particularly Pitta dosha. Virechana is believed to be beneficial for improving blood circulation and reducing inflammation associated with varicose veins. By eliminating excess Pitta and toxins, it helps to restore the natural balance in the body, promoting healthy blood flow and reducing inflammation in the veins. The procedure is performed under the supervision of a qualified Ayurvedic Doctor and is tailored to an individual's specific constitution and condition to ensure maximum effectiveness and safety.
Basti: Basti is an Ayurvedic therapy that involves the administration of medicated enemas using herbal oils or decoctions. It aims to cleanse the colon and balance the doshas, particularly Vata dosha. By introducing herbal preparations into the rectum, Basti helps remove accumulated toxins, lubricates the intestines, and promotes healthy bowel movements. This therapy not only cleanses the colon but also nourishes and rejuvenates the body, promoting overall well-being. In the context of varicose veins, Basti therapy can support healthy circulation by reducing Vata imbalances, improving blood flow, and alleviating symptoms associated with venous congestion. It is essential to undergo Basti under the guidance of a trained Ayurvedic practitioner for optimal results and safety.
Ayurvedic Herbal Remedies:
Triphala: Triphala, a herbal formulation combining amla, bibhitaki, and haritaki fruits, is renowned for its detoxifying and antioxidant properties. Amla is rich in vitamin C, bibhitaki has astringent properties, and haritaki supports digestive health. Together, they enhance digestion, promote regular bowel movements, and aid in the elimination of toxins from the body. The antioxidant components of Triphala protect cells from oxidative damage, promoting overall well-being. Additionally, Triphala supports healthy blood flow by maintaining the integrity of blood vessels. This synergistic blend of fruits in Triphala provides multiple benefits, making it a valuable Ayurvedic formulation for improving digestion, eliminating toxins, and enhancing blood circulation.
Guggulu (Commiphora mukul): Guggulu resin is highly valued in Ayurveda for its potent anti-inflammatory properties. It contains active compounds that help alleviate inflammation, pain, and swelling associated with varicose veins. By inhibiting inflammatory pathways and reducing the production of inflammatory mediators, guggulu resin promotes relief from discomfort and improves the overall condition of varicose veins. Additionally, guggulu resin supports healthy blood circulation by preventing the aggregation of platelets and reducing the risk of blood clots. This natural remedy acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory agent, making it a beneficial component of Ayurvedic treatments for managing varicose veins and their associated symptoms.
Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia): Manjistha, a herb used in Ayurveda, is renowned for its blood-purifying properties. It helps eliminate toxins from the bloodstream, promoting overall detoxification. By purifying the blood, manjistha supports improved circulation, which is beneficial for managing varicose veins. It helps reduce stagnation and congestion in the veins, thereby reducing swelling and discomfort. Manjistha also possesses anti-inflammatory properties, which further aids in alleviating inflammation in the veins. Additionally, it supports the health of the lymphatic system, which plays a crucial role in maintaining proper circulation. Overall, manjistha acts as a valuable Ayurvedic remedy for enhancing circulation, reducing swelling, and promoting overall vein health.
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera): Ashwagandha, an adaptogenic herb in Ayurveda, is renowned for its stress-reducing properties and its ability to promote overall well-being. By modulating the body's stress response, ashwagandha helps regulate cortisol levels and alleviates the negative effects of chronic stress. Reduced stress levels contribute to improved cardiovascular health and circulation. Ashwagandha supports healthy blood flow by relaxing blood vessels, reducing arterial stiffness, and enhancing nitric oxide production. These mechanisms promote vasodilation and support optimal blood circulation throughout the body. As a result, ashwagandha can be beneficial in managing conditions related to poor circulation, including varicose veins, and contribute to overall cardiovascular health.
Ayurvedic Therapies:
Abhyanga: Self-massage with warm herbal oils, like sesame or coconut oil, can have a positive impact on blood circulation and inflammation reduction. The gentle, circular motions used during the massage help stimulate blood flow, relax muscles, and alleviate inflammation in the affected areas. The warmth of the oil further aids in improving circulation and promoting relaxation. Regular self-massage with herbal oils can be a soothing and effective Ayurvedic practice to support the management of varicose veins and promote overall well-being.
Udvartana: Udvartana is an Ayurvedic treatment that involves a dry powder massage using a mixture of herbal powders and oils. During the massage, the herbal powders are vigorously applied to the body in upward strokes. Udvartana helps improve circulation by stimulating blood flow and lymphatic drainage. The friction created by the massage aids in breaking down stagnation, reducing inflammation, and supporting the elimination of toxins. This therapy can be beneficial for managing varicose veins by enhancing circulation and promoting healthy lymphatic function.
Podikkizhi: Podikkizhi is an Ayurvedic therapy in which herbal powders or herbal boluses are used for massaging the affected areas. The herbal powders or boluses are heated and gently massaged over the swollen and painful areas. This therapy helps reduce swelling, inflammation, and pain associated with varicose veins. The heat and medicinal properties of the herbal ingredients penetrate the skin, promoting improved blood circulation, reducing inflammation, and providing relief. Podikkizhi is a beneficial Ayurvedic treatment for managing the symptoms of varicose veins.
Shirodhara: Shirodhara is an Ayurvedic therapy practised at some of the best Ayurvedic treatment centres that involve a continuous flow of warm herbal oil poured over the forehead. The gentle stream of oil induces a deeply relaxing effect, reducing stress and promoting a sense of calm. Shirodhara has a positive impact on the nervous system, helping to balance the mind and body. By reducing stress and inducing relaxation, Shirodhara indirectly influences circulation, allowing for improved blood flow throughout the body, including the areas affected by varicose veins.
Diet and Lifestyle:
Follow a balanced diet that includes fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
Avoid spicy, oily, and processed foods, as they can aggravate the doshas and contribute to poor circulation.
Stay hydrated by drinking an adequate amount of water throughout the day.
Engage in regular exercise, such as walking or yoga, to improve circulation and strengthen the leg muscles.
Elevate your legs while resting or sleeping to promote blood flow back to the heart.
Conclusion: In conclusion, Ayurvedic treatments and therapies offer a holistic approach to managing varicose veins. By addressing the root causes and imbalances in the body, Ayurveda aims to improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and alleviate symptoms associated with varicose veins. Treatments such as Panchakarma, herbal remedies like Triphala and Guggulu, and therapeutic procedures like Basti and Shirodhara can contribute to reducing swelling, enhancing blood flow, and promoting overall well-being. Along with dietary and lifestyle recommendations, Ayurvedic approaches empower individuals to take charge of their vein health naturally and strive for optimal vascular health. Consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner is advised for personalised guidance and treatment plans.

National Strawberries and Cream Day
Add the perfect mix of sweet and creamy to your celebrations this National Strawberries and Cream Day, which is held each year on May 21. Fresh strawberries and cream is a great treat to indulge in on a hot day. Plus, as these lovely red berries are in season in May, it is also National Strawberry Month.
History of National Strawberries and Cream Day
Strawberries have been traced back to the Roman Empire. Ancient Romans believed this fruit alleviated symptoms of melancholy, fainting, inflammation, fevers, throat infections, kidney stones, bad breath, attacks of gout, as well as diseases of the blood, liver, and spleen. However, food historians think the Greeks knew about strawberries even before this.
The fruit was also a symbol of wealth and luxury in Victorian England. As they were a perishable food, strawberries were only available in season, increasing their demand. After evolving into a luxury, they began to be served during afternoon tea among the wealthy.
History also tells the tale of how this fruit’s harvest and availability coincided with the Wimbledon tournaments, which is as much about strawberries and cream as it is about tennis. While we still don’t know exactly how this dessert became such an integral part of Wimbledon, some sources credit King George V as the one who introduced this delicious treat to the tennis tournament. Some believe the seasonality and popularity of these red berries played a part in it becoming Wimbledon’s snack of choice.
As for how this quintessentially British dish came to be, stories of its origin say Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, a close confidant to King Henry VIII, was the brains behind it. King Henry VIII’s court fed approximately 600 hungry lords and ladies twice a day. The chef there came up with the idea to pair sweet strawberries and clotted cream together in a dessert that did not require cooking, and voila, a delicious treat was born! Another version of this story says Cardinal Wolsey mixed these two ingredients at a royal banquet, and whatever the royals ate instantly became fashionable. It was even customary for newlyweds to eat strawberries and cream for their wedding breakfast!
National Strawberries and Cream Day timeline
1509 The First Time this Dish was Served
According to rumor, strawberries and cream are first served together by Cardinal Thomas Wolsey at a banquet during Henry VIII's reign.
1550 Its Popularity is Going Strong
Tudor traveler Andrew Boorde publishes an ode to this dish, saying, “Rawe crayme undecocted, eaten with strawberyes or hurtes (whortleberry, bilberry) is a rurall mannes blanket. I have knowen such blankettes hath put men in jeoperdy of theyr lyves.”
Late 18th century First Cultivated Garden Strawberry
What we now call the 'garden strawberry' is first cultivated in this period, in Brittany, France.
1877 Offered at the First Wimbledon Tournament
200 spectators at Wimbledon court are offered strawberries and cream.
2012 Tesco Launches a New Sandwich
British retail company Tesco launches a strawberry and clotted cream sandwich, made of slices of berries between two cream-layered pieces of white poppy seed bread, with a dollop of strawberry jam — this is no longer on the market.

You can even channel your inner chef and create a trifle with alternating layers of strawberry, cream, and sweet pastry.
This day gives us a great chance to learn more about the strawberry and how this tempting treat came to be. Reading about the stories that (maybe) led to the creation of this dish, we see how cuisines from around the world can eliminate boundaries and borders.
Preserves! Jams! And much more … this one fruit can be turned into many versatile dishes to satisfy every sweet craving you ever had. Save some for celebrating National Strawberries and Cream Day, while the rest can be used in multiple different ways, as per your needs (or the demands of your taste buds).
5 Fun Facts About Strawberries
The only fruit with seeds on the outside
They herald the spring
They give your workout a little boost
They help your teeth look good too!
They are all over the world
A single strawberry has around 200 seeds, and each one has the genetic potential to become a new variety — that’s why breeders can develop so many varieties.
Strawberries ring in the spring season — in a way, they are the first fruit to ripen during this season.
Strawberries are rich in nitrates, and a study shows people who ate such foods before exercising burned 100 more calories than those who did not.
The fruity acids in these berries help remove stains, which can help whiten your teeth.
These berries are grown around the world and boast more than 600 variants.
Why We Love National Strawberries and Cream Day
Ode to the versatile fruit
This day promotes in-season eating
It makes us happy
We use this day as another excuse to worship this summer fruit. Refreshingly sweet (and sometimes a teeny bit tart), strawberries mixed with clotted and sour cream are a match made in heaven. We would happily celebrate every day as Strawberries and Cream Day if we could. Not only do they tickle our taste buds, but strawberries also bring us so many health benefits. From boosting immunity to increasing HDL (good cholesterol) and lowering blood pressure, strawberries provide us with an array of health benefits.
This day is celebrated in a month when these berries are in season, promoting sustainability and better consumer habits. Not only is in-season produce better for your health — a strawberry grown in May tastes much richer than one artificially ripened in another season — it also helps fulfill your body's needs as per the season's requirements. Plus, buying local is great for the environment, too. Think of how much fuel emissions you are reducing when you buy food that did not have to travel very far to get to you!
Popping these sweet and sometimes tart red fruits into our mouths is tantamount to a taste of happiness. Really! Strawberries are very rich in vitamin C, which is responsible for the production of endorphins in our brain, the hormone that makes you feel happy.

What Happens If You Don't Fix Tongue-Tie?
The baby's tongue connects to the floor of the mouth during fetal development. As your baby grows, they separate from the tongue, and only a thin band of tissue (the lingual frenulum) remains attached to the floor of the mouth. Tongue tie is a condition that can affect your child's eating, feeding, and growth. It can also affect their speech and social development.
If you don't fix the tongue tie, it can adversely affect your child's oral and overall health. Inadequate oral hygiene leads to tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath.
In some cases, poor dental hygiene may also cause various other diseases and conditions. Maintaining a healthy mouth throughout your lifetime is essential by brushing, flossing, and visiting your dentist regularly for preventative checkups.
In addition, plaque can enter the bloodstream and clog your arteries, increasing your risk of heart disease and strokes. Bacteria can also attach to platelets and form blood clots.
Your tongue needs entire movement to make different sounds when you speak and for swallowing and sweeping bits of food out of your mouth. Your baby's lingual frenulum (the band of tissue that connects the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth) might be too short or tight in babies with tongue-tie, which makes it hard for their tongue to move freely.
If your midwife, health visitor, or breastfeeding counselor suspects your baby might have a tongue tie, they will refer you to a practitioner. These people will formally assess your baby's tongue based on their function and appearance (e.g., the Hazelbaker Assessment Tool for Lingual Frenulum Function).
Tongue-tie can be tricky to diagnose, so you must talk to your midwife or health visitor as soon as possible and get them to refer you to a tongue-tie specialist. They may also be able to recommend some simple treatments for your baby.
A tongue tie binds the tongue's tip to the mouth's floor, which limits its movement. This can cause issues with eating, speech, and breathing problems.
Children can develop a cleft palate when a tongue tie is not treated. A cleft palate occurs when the two plates that form the hard and soft palate of the mouth are not joined.
If a child has a cleft palate, getting it repaired as soon as possible is essential. The procedure can help prevent the development of a cleft lip and can also correct problems with speech production.
Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1). They are common and can cause pain, swelling, fever, blisters, and inflammation.
Your doctor may prescribe medicines to speed the healing process if you have a cold sore. These include topical creams or pills you take by mouth, such as acyclovir, famciclovir, and valacyclovir.
You can also try home remedies, including ice packs on the sores or aloe vera gel. These work to minimize symptoms and keep the skin from getting too dry.
Until your sores heal, avoid kissing and intimate contact such as oral sex and sharing cups, razors, dishes, towels, cutlery, straws, and lip balm. This helps prevent the spread of cold sores to others. It's essential for young children.
Many children and adults experience a loss of self-confidence as a result of speech and eating issues caused by tongue-tie. If left untreated, the problem can become a significant source of emotional and behavioral issues. Surgical treatment can be used if tongue-tie is not responding to non-surgical treatments. Here are some ways to test if your child has a tongue tie: Take your finger and swipe it underneath your tongue. You should not feel a flap of skin beneath the tip.

Hey what do you mean "life threatening". 👁👁
YKNOW..... HOT GIRL SHIT (hair tuck)
nah but it kind of acts like.. idk how to explain it?? like a terminal illness
obviously its a LOT worse on some days, but unmedicated the regular symptoms are cold/flu symptoms, lightheadedness/dizziness, anemia..
theyre also really susceptible to injury and bruising, their bones are a little more brittle and theyre easy to cut and it takes longer for their blood to clot/scar over.
so the two main ways it would be would be the illness taking over their body and making it impossible for them to fight it back (think, like... a really really shitty kind of pneumonia) or severe injury, since its harder for them to recover from deep wounds and therefore difficult for themselves to heal (whether its physical, their immune system, etc.)
little tw for menstrual stuff but it also definitely makes those times utter hell for them even medicated hsjdksk
