Things that The Marauders fandom say that pisses me off
warning: i will not be holding back. if you are sensitive do not read. feel free to disagree or anything in the replies but don't be a dick
i'm only doing this cause i'm bored and have a lot of rage in me
also just to be clear if we're mutuals then i'm not on about you :)
"It's so sad that one of the only things we have in cannon is the prank"
or something along those lines. If knowing that the prank is cannon makes you upset then I have some great news for you. Nobody cared about the prank in cannon!!!! it's literally just another Tuesday for the Marauders and not once does anybody lose any friends or hold any grudges about it!! yay, now you can sleep at night!
"Dumbledore raised an army of children twice"
I've already spoken about this before but for anyone who wasn't here please know that this is a lie! Neither time did Dumbledore raise an army of children. You had to be an adult to join The Order and although the Marauders were young they were not children. As for everyone else, their ages are not confirmed. We are the ones who made Marlene and Dorcas the same age as them. For all we know The Marauder's could've been the youngest in the Order by far. As for the DA, Dumbledore literally had no part in that. It was Hermione, Harry and Ron who made the DA. All Dumbledore did was take the blame for it because they named themselves after him
"Dumbledore could've helped Regulus, Evan and Barty"
Firstly it amazes me how these three are the only Death Eaters yall have any sympathy for. I understand Regulus to a point considering we only really hear good things about him from Kreacher but with Evan and Barty genuinely what makes them so special?? Evan is in the exact same pool as Wilkes and y'all don't give a shit about them. Also Barty helped resurrect Voldemort and tortured Frank and Alice. Either way regardless on if you like them or not trust me when i say that if they would've gone to Dumbledore for help he would've helped them. When have we ever seen Dumbledore turn somebody down because they were a Slytherin. This man literally tried to help Draco as he was about to kill him and help the Death Eaters take over Hogwarts. Dumbledore doesn't know everything and he's never passed on the chance for a new spy.
"This fandom is misogynistic for making Lily/Tonks bad mothers/surrogates"
Fanfiction does not equal headcannons. Just because Lily or Tonks are bad mothers in a fanfiction does not mean that the author dislikes them or thinks that they're a bad person in cannon. Also reading about your favourite ship raise a child is a very common trope in fanfiction and as much as Harry and Teddy are Lily and Tonks children they are also James and Remus'. James and Remus are just as responsible for their children and I see nobody batting an eye when the roles are reversed. On top of all of this, Lily and Tonks were young mothers and it's very likely that they would make mistakes or in other universes not be as good as they were in cannon. That does not make them bad people nor does it make them unworthy of being liked. If you don't like it, don't read it cause i know that nobody is saying that Regulus and James raised Harry in cannon.
"Marlene/Dorcas/Mary/Evan is so underrated!"
No they're not. They're mentioned like once or twice. If anything they're incredibly overrated. Nothing wrong with that. Just facts
"Jily is dying out because people are scared to go against Jegulus"
Don't make me laugh. Jily is one of the only cannon ships we have they are literally the blueprint to the entire series. Jily is not dying out, you're just seeing more Jegulus posts because you keep interacting with them and fucking up your own algorithm in order to argue with people in comment sections
"[Insert ship here] need to stop hating on [Insert another ship here] (same with characters)"
I remember one time in the Riverdale fandom when a Bughead shipper did an interview with a magazine pretending to be Lili Reinheart and told this magazine that Bughead will be cannon just to piss the Barchie shippers off. Y'all would not survive "real" fandoms. Just because somebody doesn't like your ship does not make it hate and even if someone does say something like "Jily is trash and I hate it" so fucking what?? it's one person and trust me there is another room on the internet for the both of you. I don't even think I've seen anyone truly post hate about a ship since 2020 when i was in the instagram fandom and the Wolfstar and Blackinnon shippers had each other by the throat
"Jegulus came out of nowhere and I don't understand why people ship it"
Jegulus has been around for as long as i have (2018) and at least to me it's very obvious why people like it. It's the best friends brother, opposite sides of the war, secret relationship, forbidden romance tropes that people love. it's not that hard to understand. And as I said before we know just enough about Regulus to get some sense of what he was like but not all of the bad parts.
"Sirius was tall but Remus was TALL"
There's nothing necessarily wrong with this. I just hate it. Especially if you're commenting on somebody's post about how Sirius is canonically tall. Half the time, unless they say it themselves, they don't think that Remus is taller and don't care if you do
that's all i've got for now. i may do this again :)

drop the childhood ryugoro au
SURE I LOVE TALKING ABOUT MY AUS
There were two directions this AU could go: the Ryuji Knows direction and the Ryuji Doesn't Know direction. In either scenario, Akechi always kills Ryuji's dad and still pursues his revenge alone
Ryuji Knows: in this one, Akechi tells him about what he's doing with Shido and Ryuji initially decides to help him because he's an angry kid whose abusive dad has just left and his only friend is another angry kid who hates his father. Akechi is honestly probably resistant to his help at first but gets worn down eventually. Ryuji awakens his persona with him and is an active participant in murdering his dad. Later, they have a falling out as Ryuji realizes he can't do this (most likely because of his mom and having some realizations about the morality of murdering random people as part of a revenge plan on an even worse person) and Akechi, furious, cuts him out entirely. Even then, Akechi never tells Shido that he had a partner, and at the same time, Ryuji never tells anyone about what he and Akechi did. He develops a pretty big guilt complex as a result, which also feeds into his sense of justice, pulling him and Akechi on exact opposite sides of the spectrum. When Akechi returns, they both silently agree not to reveal their past, but Ryuji does yell at him for still working with Shido. (I'm pretty sure I wrote a drabble about this on my old blog and Ryuji punched him too lol) Akechi is more suspicious of the Phantom Thieves here and probably gives Akiren way more mixed signals because he's having the very conflicting experience of general angst and bloodlust, jealousy over Ryuji having a new best friend, anger that he still cares about Ryuji, reluctant admiration and respect towards Akiren, and denial that he cares about anyone at all. It's very late in the game when Ryuji realizes he needs to tell the Phantom Thieves everything if they want to outsmart him.
Ryuji Doesn't Know: in this one, Akechi never tells Ryuji anything. He completely disappears from his life following his mother's suicide and discovering who his father is. He kills Ryuji's dad in secret and Ryuji likely doesn't even know he's dead since he's already gone at that point. Ryuji is probably pretty upset at first that Akechi disappeared on him but comes to understand eventually that staying in contact would have been difficult, so by the time he comes back, he's not holding any grudges. He is, however, angry when Akechi completely ignores him and then pretends he has no idea who he is. Ryuji freely tells the Phantom Thieves about their past and essentially just has a lot of hurt, confused feelings about the whole mess. He's probably in denial about Akechi being a murderer for a short while, then has to be stopped from confronting him directly. On the other hand, Akechi tries to convince Ryuji to stop being a Phantom Thief and stay out of this. I think he would actually be the less conflicted one here in terms of his feelings since he never had any reason to deny caring about the only friend he ever had, which in turn makes Ryuji more conflicted. I feel like the "murdered Ryuji's dad" reveal wouldn't happen until Akechi is about to "kill" Akiren, who asks about Ryuji and Akechi deigns to answer, believing that Ryuji will never find out. Of course Akiren tells him this after and Ryuji is upset to realize he's kind of relieved, but he's still not happy that Akechi took it upon himself to do that.
I like the first option more because there's more general conflict but it also makes my head spin trying to think of how things would play out. Plus I'm not actually sure Ryuji would agree to help murder people even if he was an angry 12 year old at the time (or however old they would have been), though I do really like the guilt leading to his current justice thing I had going on there

Interesting enough, I’m pretty sure I read a fic for another fandom (either Twilight or the mortal instruments, I don’t remember which) with this exact same premise when I was like 13 and am still searching for it to this day cause I don’t remember the name or author and it it was my everything back then lol
The Luke of FMN being based on Bookcerys while his family lean more towards their hotd counterparts could go a few ways. Mainly because his personality is so different from what we see in hotd and fanon yet exactly the same in certain ways. This version of Luke isn’t afraid of confrontation but is still very much a mamas boy, he doesn’t get sea sick but loves lemon cakes just as much as Rhaenyra. It’s the small things changes in his personality make everyone go “?” But most of all it’s Luke’s reaction to Aemond which confuses his family the most.
Whereas Luke once shook in fear whenever he took so much as a stole a glance at Aemond during the disaster court hearing, nowadays he barely acknowledges the guy. Nothing Aemond does gets his attention which only drives Aemond to try harder. Like, he knows Luke is holding a grudge because of their last moments (who wouldn’t?) but he’s a changed man now and needs his pookie to see that. Sadly he can’t even get a single greeting from him.
Aemond would probably experience the stages of grief in this scenario because in his mind he’d rather Luke yell and scream at him rather than pretending he doesn’t exist. At first he’s angry, making petty jabs and pretending he doesn’t care. Then comes guilt, constantly dreaming of that night at Storm’s End, telling himself that being ignored is the least of what he deserves. Soon enough there’s bargaining, walking beside Luke in the hallway on his way to class as he tries to negotiate terms. Promising that he can punch and kick him however many times he feels he needs (though Jace has already taken that liberty a few times) as long as he agrees to sit down and have a simple conversation with him. Like, come on? Our families have practically been living together since before either of us were born and you haven’t given me more than a grunt or hum???
When this fails he goes into depressedmond mode because it seems as though he’ll never even hear Luke say his name.
Throughout this time Luke is watching and observing to see how long it’ll take his uncle to accept their current lack of a relationship before he finally decides to speak to the guy.

(Classic misreading on Flowey’s part. I guess it’s harder to read people when you haven’t reloaded and seen their responses to everything over and over again. If only he knew Yuri still didn’t know about the game, and that this was about change in general, not about grudges. It’s the future that was described as sickening by the narrator, not the past! And Yuri literally just went over how it’d be better to move on anyway. Plus Yuri hasn’t tried to kill Monika yet, so that should be a big hint she either doesn’t know, or doesn’t hold that kind of grudge… so as long as Flowey doesn’t let slip he’s killed people, he’ll be fine… If he does though he’ll look like a murderer and she’ll think everyone Flowey killed is still dead. But it should be easy to not talk about the times he killed people! And better for him, if he specifically says he killed monsters, it’ll be assumed he was talking about killing monsters in a game he played, since monsters aren’t real in DDLC’s world. Just don’t say you killed PEOPLE, Flowey. And the poem’s message is about the “ghost” only comforting herself with the past when progress changes everything, and the fear of change that comes from the future. And as Yuri points out, it’s better off to move on from the old past, as it’s fading away anyway. And it’s not as bad as it looks. The future tends to be better than the past. It just takes getting used to.)
(But I guess this is what happens when someone used to having hundreds of resets of experience meets new people in a new world.)
(And yeah fair enough. If it turns out I’m still wrong I’ll just blame it on it being a variant, and if I do catch an error, it‘ll come into play when the metanarrative of this not technically being the actual game becomes more relevant.)
*Monika’s currently “reading” the poem as well. Mostly as an excuse to who she seems focused on something…*
#Well… for all Natsuki and Yuri are concerned, Mt. Ebott doesn’t exist. But fair enough, we can pass it off as you saying you’ll find some other way to be rich to hire people when you’re president. Anyway, since you said you WILL be rich, implying you’re not YET, I’d say you can bring the gold once you’ve “became rich”. There’s a reason why I haven’t been spawning in gold myself… although I’m not sure whether or not the gold will even end up here… your game treats gold as some abstract quantity… I guess that’s up to the exact relation between our games… and however the magic this ”Nat” person that helped turn you human works… And in case you wondering, no, I can’t just give you the kind of gold in Undertale. Because of that issue with your game being written in a different language than my game, this game’s console isn’t compatible with your file, so I can’t just add 1 million gold to your inventory… I can’t edit your file at all, actually. I can only move it around, copy it, like I did to make your backup… that’s about it.
#As for Yuri knowing the truth anyway… Hmm… You know, I can see why you’d think that. I mean, in your world, there’s deja-vu moments where even those who don’t have the ability to reset still feel like they can remember previous moments. But, well, she’s still engaging with the literature club as much as usual, and she was fine with me coming to the club. I don’t think that’s what’s going on… I find it rather unlikely she worked it out when we never mentioned this being a game or anything close to that, even as a joke, and shows no signs whatsoever of knowing, or even that she doesn’t like me or Sayori. Also, this is the same poem she wrote in the first timeline, well before Sayori had the epiphany, and before I got anyone killed. Although I do understand your worry… because it would be bad news if she knew, didn’t like me and Sayori, and for whatever reason is pretending she does like us and there’s nothing wrong…
Monika:I do hope the future will prove to be better than it looks. I’m confident it will, you did point out how that’d generally the case.
Sayori:Monika’s right! We have a new club member, the one who inspired this club, and she’s amazing!
Natsuki:Maybe you guys shouldn’t assume the narrator is supposed to be Yuri herself?! But hey, if it’s true, yeah, I have to agree. Though what past memory or change could this even be about anyway? I don’t think the narrator’s Yuri, any more than the narrator of Amy Likes Spiders is me!
Yuri:Who the narrator is? I didn’t think much of that. It could be anyone who‘s nostalgic and sees what the times they remember fading away into the terrifying future… But as I said before, that’s an unstable way of living. If you keep trying to live in the comfort of the past, when the past is fading away, eventually there’ll be nothing left. The future may be different, but it has its own good parts. And as Monika pointed out, the future tends to be better than the past, even if we don’t think so. I do appreciate your words of encouragement regardless. Even I sometimes fall pray to nostalgic thinking, after all…
(Yep, Yuri assumed “Buttercup” got it right and didn’t mean something completely different. The signs point to the truth, but it’s still possible for someone to see it as Yuri brushing aside the problem… even though that’s not what’s going on... While it’d be ironic if Flowey turned his fears into a self-fulfilling prophecy, I don’t feel like being THAT mean to Flowey, Monika, and Sayori… and besides, there are much more seemingly reasonable explanations on why he didn’t include Natsuki on the list of people who hoped Yuri could move on than “Buttercup, Monika and Sayori all did something really bad and Buttercup is hoping I stop being mad at them.” Like “Sayori and Monika seemed most supportive this meeting so Buttercup’s most likely to send hopes in their name than Natsuki’s.”)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tumblr media
/#It’s annoying to think I was so wrong! That never happens. Yet at the same time I guess it’s better to be wrong in this case… we still have to reveal everything eventually. The only problem is to figure out how to break the news gently.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(As tempting as it is to see what would happen if Flowey did give them away, that would be a lot of trouble I am not willing to figure out how to solve. So he won’t be slipping up with his words too bad as far as I am planning and more importantly he will definitely not be trying to murder anyone for precaution especially now considering that he understands there is no threat.)
(Also I find it kinda funny how Monika and Sayori have already been “all-powerful beings who control the whole school.” just in a different way than he’s trying to say, lol. I only meant originally to make Flowey sound dramatic and over-hyping everything about his evil master plan, but it turns out to be not so far off after all!)
Now that we've seen a bit more of their personalities now, what do you think the new characters' sins are? (And maybe if you're up to it, which animals do you think fit them)
So I'm nowhere near 100% sure but
1. Mephisto
• Definitely Pride. Do I even need to say it.
• I just knew it had to be some sort of bird and well:
☆Moluccan Cockatoo (Salmon-Crested Cockatoo)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
• "Moluccans would like nothing more than to be sewn to your body 24 hours a day. They crave attention and love, and can become pests because of this trait. They are not very good at “playing alone” and will constantly vie for your attention."
• "Like most cockatoos, Moluccans are incredibly sensitive and can become neurotic and upset when they are neglected."
[Source]
• ^ Is that not a large part of his whole problem with Lucifer & Diavolo at the moment? Diavolo got a peacock & has been giving it more attention
• They're loud and the way they walk looks a lot like they're strutting & that definitely fits with Mephisto's character
2. Thirteen
• Wrath
• Because of the weapons, the way she holds a grudge, the tendency to jump to attacking first without thinking things through, she was described as temperamental at some point
• I knew it had to be a spider because spider webs = traps
☆Brachypelma Klassi (Mexican Pink Tarantula)
Tumblr media
• "Rarest of the genus Brachypelma" = Reapers being rare
• Pink = Pink hair
• They aren't social and live on their own
• They live in burrows = Thirteen's cave
Tumblr media
• The females are bigger, live longer & eat the males after breeding (this just gives off Thirteen's vibe)
• Tarantulas as a whole get a bad rep for being dangerous and aggressive when in reality they tend to be chill unless provoked
• Cute
3. Raphael
• This one was kinda hard
• It's not Sloth, Gluttony or Lust for sure. I'm pretty sure it's not Pride either because of how he tends to be in S4. Same with Greed cause of how he acts in the Mammon vs Raphael card.
• So it's either Envy or Wrath.
• Given how quick he's to take out his spears, how he's described as demon like when pissed and how he went for the Chimera's throat it's probably:
• Wrath
• So I knew I wanted a wild herbivore that always presented the image of being mild mannered and innocent while in reality they could be really vicious
• His expression and soft + somewhat monotone voice reminded me of Eeyore (from Winnie the Pooh) which made me think of donkeys which made me think of:
☆ Grévy's Zebra
Tumblr media Tumblr media
• Try & tell me that second picture isn't just Raphael's exact expression
• Black & White symbolism -> The Devildom/Demons & The Celestial Realm/Angels : Raphael being an angel who resembles a demon when mad : the angels believing they're always in the right when at best they are morally grey characters with good and bad sides
• Something about them looks sadder and more elegant than the other species of Zebra
• Unlike other species of Zebra they don't live in harems and instead live in isolation or with a small loosely connected group
• They can be really aggressive, kicking and biting when fighting other males, killing foals and other adults
• "Zebras also have very different temperaments to horses. They’re far more aggressive and a lot more dangerous. Zebras have been known to kick each other to death, they will viciously bite any human that comes too close, and there are even many accounts of zebras killing lions."
[source]
Bonus:
Michael
• Envy
• They even said he was envious of Lucifer as an angel
• Considering the whole Lucifer shrine thing & how he seems to miss the others as well, he's probably envious of people who get to spend time with them
☆ Red Fox with a colour mutation/leucism
Tumblr media Tumblr media
• Foxes and the whole "cunning" thing
• White because of its association with angels and "purity"
• Love the idea that, even if you wear all white and pretend to be "pure" it's just a colour, it doesn't really mean anything and underneath it all you're still a fox, you're still a predator
• Michael's being described as "childish" more than once now and foxes are loud, energetic & playful
Bagginshield fic list
Yeah, I decided to make one too because there are enough to cause me headaches and I'd like to have them somewhere organized. Please look at the tags before reading them!
Fix-it fics
Desperate magic by BeautifulFiction: Bilbo is left to tend Thorin as he hovers on the brink of death after the Battle of the Five Armies. Is love enough to save Erebor's king, or is this the last farewell?
Lay your troubles down by Avelera: An extended version of "the acorn scene." Bilbo sees his chance to snap Thorin out of his madness, and takes it.
The Riven Crown by BeautifulFiction: The aftermath of war is no laughing matter. Those who died must be honoured, those who are wounded must be healed, and those who remain need food and clothing, peace and sanctuary. With Thorin's life hanging in the balance, it is up to Bilbo and the rest of the Company to rule the rag-tag remnants of Erebor in his place. Then there is the matter of the gold... Can Bilbo save both king and kingdom, or is Erebor destined to fall deeper into ruin?
The Color of Possibility by lindoreda: When Bilbo puts himself between Thorin and Azog's blade, his mithril shirt protecting them both, it isn't long before some dwarves whisper that 'Oakenshield' might not be the best epithet for their king anymore. But for Bilbo, barred from Thorin's sight since the battle, this new epithet only adds to the sting. Spending his days caring for the recovering princes, Bilbo wonders how much more of this he can take, not suspecting his place at the center of a silent divide in the company.
Homesick by Margo_Kim: Five years after they've reclaimed Erebor, Thorin is sick of home, Bilbo is just sick, and neither is handling the situation ideally.
The Road Delivered Us Home by keelywolfe: In the years since Bilbo left Erebor, he has lost his respectability, gained a nephew, and gotten on with life at Bag End. He'd left aside adventure for the comforts and peace of his little Hobbit hole, and for the love of a child who needed him. Though perhaps, adventures can yet find him.
Notices in the Paper by YamBits: Bilbo returns to the Shire after his adventure, newly married, and newly homeless, after his two year absence allowed the Sackville-Bagginses to obtain Bag End. Bilbo and Thorin go to the Tooks for help, and find newly orphaned Frodo Baggins, also looking for a home.
A Royal Guardianship by ladyoakenshields: When Bilbo and Thorin return to the Shire for a sabbatical during Yuletide, they find a reason to retire the throne in Erebor sooner than expected.
The Shire's gems by awkwarng3: Thorin, Bilbo, and Frodo move to the Shire after raising Frodo in Erebor, and Frodo makes a friend.
Time travel fix-it fics
An expected journey by MarieJacquelyn: For years Bilbo has written about his adventures and told stories about his dealings with dwarves and dragons. To most it seemed like fanciful nonsense but to Bilbo it was all very real. A weight followed him home from his travels, one called regret. Now in his final moments Bilbo has a choice to make – go quietly into death’s embrace or go back again and face all the fear and pain for the chance to make things right? Of course, change is a fickle thing and not everything can be done again as Bilbo is about to find out. In the end, it may not only be salvation that he’s fighting for.
Bilbo Baggins, warrior of the Valar by Pallalalo: Bilbo raised his eyebrows. “And you’ve come to the Shire to look for this someone? My, Gandalf, I wonder if you know Hobbits at all. They would tell you that adventures are nasty, disturbing, uncomfortable things. That they would make you late for dinner.” Bilbo recalled his own words perfectly. It had been something he and Gandalf had looked back on with bittersweet laughter. This Gandalf however noticed his exact words. “Would they now? And what about you, mhm? What would you tell me about adventures?” #The Valar send Bilbo back in time, to the day where Gandalf asks him to join in an adventure. After living a lifetime of regret and suffering, he vows to change things for the better. For Thorin. For Frodo. But will he succeed?
I'll die to care for you by thehufflepuffhobbit: His gaze landed on Mahal's eyes once more. "You did your best, Thorin." It was tempting to look away; he wanted to deny that with everything he had. It certainly didn't feel as though falling into Gold Sickness and then dying was doing his best. Mahal smirked, as though he knew Thorin's desire to contradict him, and pinched his cheek before walking over to a table. "Aye, I didn't think you would believe me. I'm not lying, it certainly could have gone better. More according to my plan, but I know you really did try." "Your plan?" He didn't know if he should ask, really. Knowing that his Maker had set a course for him, he didn't want to think about the ways he had done everything wrong. There were too many examples of mistakes in his long life, too many opportunities that he had missed that had probably been planned for him from the beginning. Or:Mahal feels like Thorin fucked up his legacy and gives him a do over.
Darker times ahead by Reach4theSky: Bilbo is sailing to the Undying Lands but wary of letting go of the guilt that has been with him for many decade. His most sincerest wish is to go back and change what was done. Before reaching the lands of peace and healing, he dies aboard the ship and finds that his wish is being granted, not because he is the one to wish it but because this is the dwarves last chance to escape a fate of eternal waiting. He finds that not only is he going to be sent back to his younger body, but so is the entire Company of Thorin Oakenshield. Time is a fickle thing and not all the members have their memories returned to them at the same time. The journey on becomes interesting as the dwarves slowly remember and fight for themselves and their kin, yet new hurdles are thrown at them when they realize that more people remember than expected...
Of an arcane binding by Salvia_G: An inexplicable magic ties Bilbo Baggins, hobbit of the Shire, to Thorin, dwarven prince of Erebor.
Legends by DomesticGoddess: The fellowship has set out on its noble quest to destroy the ring and put an end to the threat that is Sauron! Just set out really, barely left the gates of Imladris, but things are going smoothly enough so far. That is until the two most unlikely party crashers fall upon their little fellowship. Uncle Bilbo and the Legendary Thorin Oakenshield?! Frodo just wants to know what's going on but the two of them won't stop hollering at each other long enough for anyone to get a word in edgewise. Suddenly, their little group is joined by Frodo's two biggest heroes and he discovers there was a lot more to Uncle Bilbo's stories than he realized.
Beside myself by bliboboggins: "What are you doing? Just who do you think you are?" Startled, Bilbo turned around slowly. And there, in a familiar patchwork dressing gown, brandishing a fire poker wildly about, was... Bilbo.
Erebor never fell au fics
The hearth doesn't make the home by Moonrose91: For things Bilbo could not change, he was condemned to a life of isolation, with the belief that none could love him. And then a Dwarf came to Hobbiton.
Clarity of vision by Mithen: In a Middle-Earth where Erebor never fell, a shadow remains in the heart of the Lonely Mountain. Bilbo Baggins finds himself drawn reluctantly into a quest that will lead him across the continent--from Bree to Lake Evendim to the icy North and beyond--with a party of five dwarves searching for an artifact that will cure the ailing King Thrór.
Ghivashel by mdseiran: The last thing Bilbo expects when he stays up late one night is company. The strange dwarf and his companion crash into his life and prove unexpected saviours. But the dwarf seems to think he will be joining them on their travels, and Bilbo has no such intentions.
The Song of My Heart by DomesticGoddess: After a failed attempt of trying to carve out a new home in the Blue Mountains for his people, Thorin finds himself beseeching the Hobbit Thain and his council for a place for his people in their bountiful land. An agreement is struck and plans in the works for integrating his people into their land. The only condition being an arranged marriage between himself and one of their family heads. A small price to pay to see his people safe and well fed. Unfortunately, he’s to marry the most disagreeable hobbit in all the Shire who also seems to hold a personal grudge against him. If only he could figure out why his new betrothed hates him so much.
Oak and Mistletoe by HildyJ: After a life dominated by a strange form of sickness, Thorin is sent to the Shire to seek a cure only Bilbo Baggins can offer.
Karkûn shukula - A Cinderella AU by harrypanther: When the Prince of the Shire visits the Kingdom of Erebor, there is great excitement. There are hopes he will choose to marry one of the Royal Family, cementing an alliance that would secure food supplies for the dwarven Kingdom and gain new allies. All eligible dwarves are expected to attend a series of Balls. Unknown to the guests, there is a third royal child, manoeuvred out by his ambitious stepmother, for whom this may be his last chance of restoring his fortunes and escaping his fate…
Alone this Yuletide by Emsiecat: 'Alone this Yuletide? Irritated with prying and nosey family members? I am an out of work blacksmith currently trying to make my way by any means necessary that does not involve my resorting to thievery (prisons are most uncomfortable, I've unfortunate first hand experience). However, if you would like me to be your strictly platonic companion for any social function, but have me pretend that we are in a serious courtship, so as to torment your family and ward off unwanted suitors then I am more than obliging...' After becoming increasingly irritated by overtures of romance from various Shire residents following the death of his mother four years ago, Bilbo is more than ready to resort to desperate measures. That is, up to and including pretending to be in a serious relationship with a certain surly blacksmith currently inhabiting the Bindbale Woods. It's a good idea after all; all they have to do is pretend to be in love over the Yuletide period and Bilbo's family and suitors will surely leave him alone after that. It's perfect! And nothing can possibly go wrong, right? Certainly nothing as preposterous as falling for one another for real...
Modern au fics
Nothing gold can stay by perkynurples: Bilbo Baggins led a rather peaceful life, thank you very much, until an old acquaintance decided to turn it upside down, and he found himself agreeing to take a job that’s… let’s say not exactly up his alley, and might eventually cost him a little more than his treasured cozy lifestyle. Who would have thought tutoring a slightly menacing monarch’s more than slightly overbearing nephew could prove to be such an adventure?
Love-In-Idleness by perkynurples: Taking Bilbo Baggins, a successful movie actor who is only just getting used to the perks and intricacies of becoming A Face People Want To See, and putting him together with Thorin Oakenshield, with his very traditional (read: slightly backwards) ideas about what constitutes Real Art and Real Talent, might very well be viewed as just some clothead’s idea of a joke. But there are jokes, and then there are carefully calculated risks the size of controversial reproductions of classic Shakespearean plays - for Bilbo, it is the chance of a lifetime to prove himself to all those who have ever deemed him too one-dimensional to even attempt stage, while Thorin has the opportunity to get out of the rut that’s been hindering his career for so long now, and shine in a role worthy of his talent once again. That is if the two learn how to share the same space for more than ten minutes without wanting to tear each other’s hair out. The course of true love never did run smooth, after all…
Candid by northerntrash: Thorin wasn't entirely sure why there was a six-foot candid photograph of him hanging in this exhibition, but he was going to wring the neck of whoever had put it there. In which Bilbo is a photographer, Thorin an accidental model, and Gandalf just likes to make trouble for everyone.
How the west was won and where it got us by stickman: Bilbo is a harried 1st year British literature Ph.D. (early 20th century fiction) who happens to have an interest in spatial narrative structures, a lack of time-management skills, and a tiny apartment with a lot of books and very little furniture. He’s stressed, always, and doesn't quite know where he belongs. He tells himself that really, this is, in fact, what he wants to be doing. But sometimes, as much as he loves books, he gets an urge to do something with his hands. Thorin is a disgruntled M.Arch. 1 in his last year who can’t be arsed to shave and frightens his students, and, frankly, his profs, but his work is top-notch so no one can really say much. They can, however, bully him into running a hands-on design workshop on Saturday mornings, which is complete crap, because he’s used to drinking his Friday nights into oblivion so showing up at Milstein at 7:45 the next morning and trying to teach in a room of wall-to-wall windows as the sun rises is not at the top of his list. Besides, no one ever shows up. Except one morning, someone does. [graduate school AU]
Butterfly effect by eyra: Yoga wasn’t for him. Yoga was for interesting people. Luminous people; people who took gap years and spoke a foreign language. People who ate lentils and burned incense and had fantastic, colourful friends with fantastic, colourful lives full of travel and silent retreats and those baggy trousers with elephants on them. Yoga was decidedly not for people like Bilbo, who wore cardigans and ate beans on toast and whose linguistic capabilities stretched only as far as a rusty Spanish A-Level. Just your regular story of boy meets yoga instructor.
Remover of the obstacles by MistakenMagic: "Dis often chided her older brother for being a misanthropist. She did it so often it had become a term of endearment. It was true that Thorin struggled with people; he struggled to form and maintain relationships. Dr. Grey had diagnosed him with this and Thorin hadn’t the heart to tell him this wasn’t a symptom of his PTSD, it was a symptom of his personality. He exercised a sense of apathy with almost everyone he met… But Bilbo was different. Thorin actually found himself wanting to know more about him."
Color outside the lines by andquitefrankly: Kindergarten has just gotten significantly better. Just ask Thorin, who's got the biggest crush on the new kid in class, Bilbo Baggins. With the help of his friends, Thorin knows that he can take back the swings from the 1st graders, show up the K-1 class in the school pageant, and win the heart of one curly haired boy. Yup. Kindergarten is going to be a year to remember.
Bran' New Suit by pibroch (littleblackdog): Andrew's description had been sufficient to recognize him— a riot of honey brown curls, short in stature, a well-favoured face with expressive features— but it hadn't quite been enough to prepare Tom for the sharp, almost painful tug in his gut at the sight of the man. They had never met before, to the best of Tom's recollection, but there was something eerily and inexplicably familiar about him all the same.
Different species au fics
I've grown a hedge around my heart by pibroch (littleblackdog): "Thorin was the essence of so many Buckland oddities, distilled into one misfortunate young hobbit, much to his infinite embarrassment. Built like a stork, his father had said once, in an example of Thrain Brandybuck’s usual tactless humour. All beak and legs." Thorin Brandybuck, just recently come of age, still lives in his family’s smial in Buckland, with his parents and two younger siblings. Thorin is an odd duck amongst his relations and neighbours-- unsociable, grumpy, shy, and awkward. And beyond that, he looks rather strange even for a Bucklander, strongly favouring the thick, dark haired build of his Stoorish blood. It defies all sense and reason why Bilbo Baggins, an exemplar of all the respectable traits Thorin lacked, would ever desire a friendship with him. Bilbo, as Thorin discovers, is not always as sensible as he appears.
In which the dwarves are satyrs for reasons by HiddenKitty What the title says basically.
Bride of the demon king by DomesticGoddess: Thorin is King of the demons, a beast-like race feared by humans. Ever since the demons and humans formed a truce years ago, the humans have sent a young human every year as a tribute to the King of demons. Thorin is tired of having to deal with the tribute that has long since lost its meaning. The only tribute he'd be interested in is the boy he met fifteen years ago on the border of the demon and human realms. Despite his fantasies, Thorin knows the chances of ever seeing the boy again are slim to none, until they're not.
Lost He Wandered Under Leaves by serenbach: Thorin son of Thrain is a struggling blacksmith descended from a fallen line of kings. In an attempt to provide for his family over the winter, he reluctantly accepts an impossible sounding task - to hunt down an enchanted deer that lives in the Old Forest that borders the Shire, and make armour and weapons from its hide and antlers. He never expected to succeed. And he certainly never expected what he found to change his life so completely.
A Dryad's Tale by Bilbo Baggins by Moongazer12: Bilbo is a dryad (think little sibling to ents). Long ago a curse was placed upon him from destroying one of the rings of power. Whenever he touches someone with his bare skin he will make them insane. But despite this, he and Gandalf have gone on many adventures to help protect Middle Earth (What was the point to destroying the ring if something else destroyed it instead?) Gandalf has called on him once again to help on a quest, Bilbo just hopes that they read his amendments to the contract.
The quest but with a twist au fics
King, come at the red morning by Tawabids: Bilbo has heard fairytales of the lost prince of the dwarves, Thorin son of Thrain, who disappeared the day Smaug attacked the Lonely Mountain. But he does not believe in fairytales until he comes across the dwarf sleeping in the depths of Erebor, and kisses him back to life. Now Thorin - a hundred and fifty years out of his time - has to confront a world in which his city is empty, his people scattered, his baby brother Frerin is king, two nephews he's never met are missing in action, and a war is brewing right on his doorstep. And as if that wasn't complicated enough he's trapped in the body of an old man and falling stupidly in love with a gossipy, grudging little hobbit.
When the sun rises by Harry1981: Bilbo Baggins of Bag End was not a very respectable Hobbit. No respectable Hobbit had a sword and crossbow hanging in their home, nor did they have Dwarves as family. But Bilbo Baggins did, and all of Shire knew of his husband, blacksmith Thorin Oakenshield. When Bilbo comes home to find his Husband earlier than expected, he learns of a quest to reclaim Erebor. It is a death mission. Bilbo knows that Dwarves are stubborn creatures, and none more than Thorin himself. But nobody said that Bilbo himself was any less stubborn. So he will follow his dearest husband across all of Middle Earth, through plains and mountains and forests, all while hiding the true nature of their relationship (Dwarven politics never helped anyone), brushing off some old wounds (and getting new ones) and finding out new things about the dwarf Bilbo calls husband (and his extended family). Nobody ever said love was easy, after all.
Small, but fierce by DomesticGoddess: As a result of a magical mishap during the trip to the lonely mountain, Bilbo is reverted to a wee little hobbitling. Only in body, of course. His adult mind is still very aware of the indignity of it all (seriously! He doesn't need to be coddled, carried, and fed like a child). It turns out, dwarves love children and there is nothing cuter than Hobbit children. Bilbo soon realizes that he can get away with just about anything in his babyish form and starts taking full advantage of it. Even the grumpy brooding king can't deny the angelic little creature anything he desires (and Bilbo's going to milk that for all it's worth).
Your song like a home in my heart by Nennvial: In Middle Earth, all creatures have a soulmate. Not all have some, but if they do, it is a bond nothing can break, not even death. The more famous story of such a bound was the story of Bren and Luthien, who even defied detath. The way someone can find out that the other is one’s soulmate is through song: when they meet and hear the voice of the other, a song sings in their heart, which feels like home and makes them complete. They may refuse it if they wish to do so, but they hence risk a life of bitter looniness. Thorin Oakenshield and Bilbo Baggins are soulmates, but they must admit it to themselves throughout their journey to Erebor.
To Dungeons Deep (And Caverns Old) by KingUndertheMountain: Bilbo Baggins was not your average hobbit. Of course, he had the wonderfully groomed and well-taken-care-of hairy feet like every other one of his race, yes, but he was not like other hobbits. He was cursed. Or, as the witch who gave him the enchantment put it, was “gifted”. She had given him the “gift” of obedience – whenever there was a direct command given to him, for example “cook a large meal” or “take a walk”, he could not disobey. Not without a lot of pain and eventual submission.
Chocolate candy one-shots
The world is sleeping (my world is you) by katheneverwrites (mandolinearts): I asked Persephone, “How could you grow to love him? He took you from flowers to a kingdom where not a single living thing can grow.” Persephone smiled, “My darling, every flower on your earth withers. What Hades gave me was a crown made for the immortal flowers in my bones.” - Nikita Gill ---“What do you mean, my friend?” There is a line of thought that surfaces in Gandalf’s mind, but he drowns it before it can take root. Surely not. But Bilbo’s chuckle sets him on edge. The small, gentle god of harvest, nature, and flowers sits up straighter, and in his crown of flowers there is a wire of strong metal, his cloak is suddenly not colorful anymore but the deepest black and he is terrifying, horrific, powerful - “I married Thorin Oakenshield, King Under the World.”
Of seasons by northerntrash: As far as he could tell, he had been kidnapped, which in itself made this week more than a little unusual. In which Bilbo steals away the Lord of Death, and Thorin can't quite bring himself to stay angry about it.
Warm up by paranoid_fridge: On one of their walks, Bilbo tumbles into a stream. They make it back to Bag End and Bilbo demands Thorin warm him up.
Royal Blue And Crimson Red by Mistofstars: Here's what happened before and after Bilbo accidentally eavesdrops on Gandalf and Elrond at night in Rivendell, as they discuss Thorin's quest and his family's history. Oh, and Thorin and Bilbo share a room, of course ;)
I was young when I left home by Margo_Kim: There was a pity clapper somewhere in the third row. Thorin finished his fourth song to polite applause from the people who noticed that the song was finished, but within the smattering of claps was someone beating his hands together like he was trying to rhythmically kill a fly. There was usually one of those, the kind who notices that no one else is paying attention and so is determined to compensate for that regardless of how they feel about the actual music. Thorin ignored him. It was easy to do so—he'd always hated looking at the audience when the singing was done.
A matter of buttons by StupidFatPenguin: “Your shirt,” says Thorin, quite out of the blue, and Bilbo looks down his front to see if there is a spot of tea or jam or anything equally embarrassing spilled on it. He is relieved to find nothing of the sort and looks up at the dwarf with an eyebrow raised in question. Thorin sits mute, his still-smoking pipe forgotten in his hand. He looks on for long moments still, seems almost lost to a thought before he shifts and lifts his gaze to meet Bilbo’s inquiring face. “It is familiar to me. Did you not wear this on the eve we met?” In which Bilbo and Thorin re-enact the evening they met.
The ladder by Milliethekitty27: Inspired from a post made by wheeloffortune-design on tumblr. Tired of his lonely kitchen in Yavanna's Garden, Bilbo Baggins wonders if the dwarven love of being underground is true in death. If so, maybe his dwarves are living (ha ha) under the very land Bilbo is weeding. With that thought, Bilbo goes and asks Hamfast for a shovel.
Love hobbit by HybridOwl: Bilbo Baggins considers himself a bit of a cock up, all things considered. He never made it out of his small highway adjacent town, can't seem to stop chain-smoking, and overall has more to talk about with the plants in his shop than 90% of all the rest of Middle Earth. So when he's reading the morning paper and a love note that can't be for anyone but him pops up, he's pretty sure - almost positive, really - that he's being made fun of. "TO the chain-smoking little stud who collects two metros from Gamgee's Goods every morning, will you be my love hobbit? - Bearded Biker." (heavily inspired by tumblr posts)
Fusion with other fandoms au fics
The Second Time by authoressjean; Sebastian Moran can't pull the trigger on John Watson to save his own hide, and what the hell is it with the doctor, anyway? Then Gandalf shows up, meddlesome wizard, and reminds him none too gently of his past life: as Thorin Oakenshield, leader of a company that had once included a small hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. One that looked decidedly like John Watson. And this would be the perfect chance to make things right with Bilbo the way he really hadn't been able to before he died, and that's when Gandalf tells him John doesn't remember being Bilbo, and to leave him alone. Right. Like that's going to happen.
And sow a star divided in us by MistakenMagic: Short summary: Gays in space! Longer summary: After his first successful solo mission, Jedi Knight Bilbo Baggins, trained by High Council member and full-time nuisance, Master Gandalf, returns to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. During an excursion to the sparring arena, he meets a group of Dwarven Jedi from Ered Luin, a mountainous planet located in the Outer Rim. Young padawans, Fili and Kili, are full of curiosity at this strange, barefoot Jedi, but Master Thorin, who appears to have the personality of a rancor and mental shields like blast doors, is less than impressed.
Comics you should definitely check
Every work by rutobuka, seriously they're criminally cute and they're not still favored by everyone without reason.
Retelling the Hobbit by Mellow_Comics: Bilbo has never been good at telling the "true" story of what happened on his journey to the Lonely Mountain. Now he's trying to turn the tale of his quest into a lighthearted children's book-- a bedtime story for his young nephew Frodo. But what really happened on his journey? And how did it actually affect him? This is a comic adaptation/retelling of the Hobbit! It's framed as a bedtime story that Bilbo is telling a younger Frodo.
For now these are some of my personal favourites! However, I'm sure my list will grow since my reading list has some gems still waiting for me to read, so be certain that there will be a part 2 of this list!
Why do people like Zemo?!
Something I have been wondering about for a while now is why people like Zemo as much as they do. He even gets more appreciation than Sam, who is an incredible person (the reason isnt exactly difficult to figure out*). While Zemo is an interesting character, and he does have some good points it doesnt change that he has killed and hurt a lot of innocent people and a lot of people gloss over that fact. I can understand his motive, but I cant get past what he did.
*(Racism)
Its not suprising because white cis men usually gets away with anything they do, especially if they are charismatic, attractive and rich (like Zemo and Tony). They can kill and hurt as many people as they want, and people will still stan them and either justify what they did, or just gloss over it. And the fact that it keeps happening is a big problem. And its happening both in real life, and in at least most fandoms.
Now I am not saying that liking morally darker people is wrong. I also like some of them. What I am saying is that glossing over their bad actions is a problem. If you add in villanising other characters who havent done anything remotely that bad being critisised more, it gets really irritating.
Now lets get more into Zemo, and compare him to the other two Sokovians who wanted revenge on the avengers. (I wont really be talking about anything past civil war, or this would get very long and my ADHD can only handle so much.)
Zemo killed a lot of innocent people. I couldnt find an exact number on anything but the bombing, but it was over a dozen at least. First the bombing killed 12 people, including king T’chaka (the fact that his death is so glossed over is not lost on me*1). Then he kills Dr. Theo Broussard. Then he uses Bucky*2 to kill and injure an unknown number of people at the Joint Counter Terrorist Centre. None of these people had anything to do with his motive! The only ones I can excuse him for is Karpov and the other 5 winter soldiers. But I cant look past the rest.
1*(Racism and Xenophobia)
2*(Zemo uses Buckys body without his consent. The fact that some people ships them sickens me!)
Now for his motive. This part I can understand. He lost his father, wife and son. I cant even imagine how painful that must be! However that does not give him the right to hurt innocent people! I can understand why he would blame the avengers, but the only ones among them who were responsible in any way were Tony, Bruce and maybe a tiny bit Wanda (even though Tony having a bad nightmare would have had the same results). The main one responsible is of course Ultron. No one but Tony and Bruce knew about creating Ultron, because if they did they would have stopped it. It was actually a betrayel of Thor. When Ultron broke free they did everything they could to stop him and save people. Its not their fault that they werent able to save everyone. They did everything they could and without them Ultron would have killed everyone on earth. So it makes sense that he would blame some of the avengers, but most were completly innocent and risked their lives trying to save as many as possible. And in Pietros case actually gave their life.
Wich brings me to two other people who also wanted revenge, the Maximoff twins. Although Wanda is usually the only one of them to be held responsible (the fact that she is female and an eastern European immigrant is also not lost on me*). Now some people gloss over what she did too, wich is wrong. Dont get me wrong I love Wanda, but that doesnt mean that I cant admit that she has made some bad mistakes. Granted she feels a lot of remorse and regret wich we dont really see Zemo do. However a lot of people are villanising Wanda completly.
*(Sexism and Xenophobia)
Like Zemo the twins lost their family. Their parents were killed by a Stark missile, then they had to wait for two days with another one right by them. They couldnt move from where they were hiding, so they would have been starving and dehydrated, but all they could do were wait and hope that the missile didnt blow them up. Then they had to move to an orphanage, given the conditions in the country I cant imagine that would be a nice place. And keep in mind they were 10 years old. They got desperate and wanted to protect their country, so they end up joining hydra wich was pretending to be shield at the time. But only untill they got the power they needed to defend their country. Now the twins were younger than Zemo, and the weapon that killed their parents came from from Stark industries. So it makes sense that they would have a personal grudge. However Zemo was older, he led a Sokovians kill squad, and he is a very critical thinker. So it makes less sense for him to hold a personal grudge on most of the avengers.
For their revenge the only people the twins intentionally harmed were the avengers, unlike Zemo who knowingly killed a lot of people that he knew had nothing to do with it. The twins wanted to protect their country, while Zemo declared it a failed state. So why are the twins critisised and hated more than Zemo?!
Xu Mo vs. Mo Yi [Character Study]
I can never get over the aesthetic of these two pictures placed side by side LOL. But, anyway, the point of this post is to nip any undue comparisons in the bud and claims of copying organize my thoughts and compare these two characters to highlight their similarities, differences, and further explore each character through these contrasts.
Q) If you like Xu Mo, would you like Mo Yi?
Honestly, I think this depends on what you like most about Xu Mo. I already knew beforehand that I gravitate towards characters who think 5 steps ahead, are predominantly logical, and scholars/gentlemen, so it’s not surprising I bias both Xu Mo and Mo Yi.
However, as I got to know Mo Yi further (Themis is around 6 months old now), I find that he’s distinctively different from Xu Mo on three crucial points that’ll determine whether people from either camp will like the other character.
1) Stance on Others
In a post for Xu Mo, “Into Your World”, I argued that Xu Mo is an alienated genius who had troubles getting along with others, until he mastered the social game as an adult. However, you can still see glimpses of this as he tries to understand MC’s world and shares his own.
To be fair, Mo Yi’s past is still under wraps but I feel confident in saying that, while he was probably highly intelligent compared to his peers [SR Sculpted Heart], his isolation doesn’t seem to come from his innate nature but rather his social position (there’s heavy implications that he’s like some sort of noble or something) [SR Snowy Pine Fairytale].
IMO, these backgrounds really shaped the way these two men interact with the world.
Xu Mo has a detached and indifferent view towards other people. They simply exist and don’t bring anything positive or negative to him. His ambition to ensure the survival of humanity reflects this too because it’s pure utilitarianism; everyone (apart from MC) can be sacrificed equally for the greater good. If anything, he probably finds other people to be interesting subjects to study, no matter what kind of person they are. IIRC the only time he expressed dislike to people, or a group of people, was when he told Hades he enjoyed killing thieves LOL.
Meanwhile, Mo Yi has an elitist streak to the point where he and his MC actually clashed opinions and debated each other [SR Warm Fingertips]. It’s incredibly ironic because he’s a psychiatrist who treats his patients without judgment, but at the same time he looks down on so many things and people (PUAs, people who betray love, hypocrites who only seek power and fame) [Ch2; Personal Story Ch1-3; SSR Moonlit Ball].
One of the things I noticed early on is that Xu Mo draws from the Eastern scholar archetype, “Xu Mo Character Study”, while Mo Yi actually draws more from the Western gentleman archetype.
So, just to summarize this section, Xu Mo is detached from the world naturally and likes to observe people and try to blend in. Mo Yi deliberately draws a line between him and others and, at times, has the casual cruelty of someone born as nobility (arrogance is carved into his bones, even if he tends to keep it low-key because he generally has a “gentle and polite” attitude).
2) Stance on Love
Xu Mo didn’t understand love, or really even emotions. Love is grown between him and his MC (there’s multiple analogies throughout the game about how their love is like a seed). I think [Ch25] pretty much sums it up for Xu Mo, where he goes through that emotional rollercoaster and muses about how, at the end of human evolution, emotions should be discarded. He also admits that MC taught him the “fear” of a normal person, because now he has someone he cannot give up no matter what, which goes against his previous utilitarian beliefs.
Compared to this, Mo Yi fell in love at first sight. Yes, you read that right. The “scientist and logical” archetype fell in love at first sight LOL. Not only does he acknowledge it right off the bat, but he fully embraces it too and believes that real love makes people better versions of themselves [Personal Story]. Mo Yi is a through and through psychiatrist in that he never underestimates how primal emotions (and love) can be.
Heck, not only is this central to his personal story, but we also have hints that one of Mo Yi’s parents fell in love at first sight with the other person (and he inherited their predisposition for that). Unfortunately, their love had a tragic end and Mo Yi seems to have a huge grudge against his father for whatever happened to his mother (again, Mihoyo is keeping this a mystery LOL), but Mo Yi explicitly confirms that even if his love leads to a tragic end he will still walk down this road and attempt to change it [SR Cool Summer].
IMO one other difference between them re: love is this exchange that lives rent free in my head which I saw in a Xu Mo/Reader/Mo Yi fanfiction LOL. Bear with me here.
Mo Yi: Wearing a mask for a long time will tire you.
Xu Mo: It’s enough just to wear one in front of the necessary person.
Xu Mo and his MC make great efforts to understand each other’s worlds, but this understanding comes from the doors he chooses to open to her. He reveals himself as much as possible, but I think he’s an inherently private person (and there’s all that Ares stuff) so there are times where he hides things so that he doesn’t worry his MC. I think this is enough to count as a “mask”. Sometimes he pretends he’s okay when he’s not.
On the other hand, while I think Mo Yi shares the sentiment in not wanting his MC to worry unduly, he tries to reveal himself as much as possible. There’s an amazingly relatable conflict in him here where he wants her to know every side of him, but he’s also terrified of how she’ll react if he shows her his ugliest sides and imperfect sides (he has some sort of phobia or fear about imperfection, but Mihoyo has been keeping mum on the exact details of this so far) [Personal Story; SR Sculpted Heart].
It’s pretty ironic that Mo Yi wants to be perfect, but he realizes that the more perfect he is the more of a sense of distance there’ll be between him and his MC because of the subconscious pressure someone “perfect” brings LOL [SSR Border of Light and Darkness].
3) Stance on Growth
If you haven’t realized that one of Xu Mo’s greatest themes is the phrase “Take your time in growing”, then what have you been reading? Jkjk, but seriously this gets repeated in multiple places, although my brain always goes back to [Blossom Date] for this.
Even if he and his MC start off with fundamental differences (she believes all people have inherent worth and can’t be involuntarily sacrificed), he wants to personally watch the journey of her maturation. He also subtly guides and teaches her. Unfortunately, due to circumstances of the main story, he doesn’t get his wish and she grows up a lot out of his eyes, but their relationship still revolves around him wanting her to have as much time as possible to grow.
He’s, for a lack of better word, extremely gentle about this (setting aside as much of the Ares and story parts as we can, because LovePro’s story is tragedy on tragedy LOL). I think [Autumn Blaze Date] shows a good analogy for this, because he holds the bicycle steady for MC until she can get going on her own, and he also catches her the first time.
Meanwhile, Mo Yi... ha ha ha. I just came out of chapter 3 for his [Personal Story] and let’s just say his philosophy is tough love. It’s ironic because, in many of his other dates, he wrestles with an internal conflict to protect his MC but also to let her experience all sorts of things to both test and temper her.
This is going to touch on the previous topic about love for a moment, but a part of Mo Yi’s love at first sight experience is also “testing” the other person through all sorts of situations and, after seeing all their different sides, he can determine whether his love at first sight is one that’ll last for the rest of his life or if it’s just a fleeting moment of beauty and emotion.
He also extremely respects his MC’s sense of justice and pursuit of the truth in the world, no matter what she encounters, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this is what drew him to her in the first place. But MC’s occupation and beliefs will make her confront a lot of dark and dangerous things and so, whenever possible, Mo Yi lets her confront these in “controlled” situations to train her. If I had to make an analogy, IMO, he’d let his MC ride the bicycle and pick her up only after she falls, or when she’s like 0.1cm away from the ground LOL.
Mo Yi is (perhaps rightfully) called out on this by another character, who believes Mo Yi is too arrogant in believing everything is under his control and he can prevent MC from getting hurt whenever he lets her get into dangerous situations, and I’m interested to see if Mihoyo will let him experience failures with his philosophy so he can grow more, like the things Xu Mo went through re: his personal beliefs [Ch24].
Overall
I don’t know how well I explained myself, especially for people who don’t know anything about Mo Yi, and each section goes back and forth between the two characters LOL so here’s another section that attempts to describe their overall atmosphere.
If, like I said in my Headcanon Notes, Xu Mo makes me immediately think of all the words for soft, gentle, light, still, water, etc etc., then the words I constantly think about for Mo Yi is messily human. He’s like a bundle of contradictions, but coherent because it’s being intentionally done.
Mo Yi doesn’t discriminate against his patients, yet he can be elitist and looks down on others. He wants to let MC have dangerous experiences, but also wants to protect her. He wants to be perfect, but he also wants to reveal himself entirely to his MC because that’s real love.
In contrast, Xu Mo has a very clean and orderly personality LOL. You can draw clear cause and effect lines from his personality to his actions.
So, anyway, these are two interesting characters who start off with similar archetypes as scientific logical men of scholar/gentleman dispositions, but yet they’re also on opposite ends for a lot of things such as their approach to emotions and the world.
Oh wait, lastly, because I don’t have a good place to put this—but I think it’s funny—is that both characters are pretty possessive and greedy, but while Xu Mo does things in a sneaky, cunning and fox-like way Mo Yi gets ridiculously open about his jealousy and it’s hilariously cute but also almost childish? I often forget Mo Yi is older than Xu Mo by a year, because Xu Mo honestly feels a bit more mature than him LOL. If we count them actually aging by when their game came out though, then Mo Yi is 28 and Xu Mo is 29 now.
I love an absolutely unreasonable amount of things about Robin: Year One for something written by Chuck Dixon (and have decided to just go with the conclusion that well, even broken clocks are right twice a day, it is what it is).
But one of my favorite aspects about it is the little throwaway detail that Talia was the one ultimately behind Shrike’s little assassin finishing school for street kids, and my ensuing headcanon that this is the REAL source of conflict between her and Dick, assuming Dick also found out about her role at some point later on.
For Dick, its that like, wow, Vengeance Academy was reeeeeeeally not fun for me, thanks T, but also there’s the unsettling awareness that given where he was emotionally and mentally at the time, it came far closer to swaying his mindset to its way of thinking than he cares to admit. With this translating into his eternal grudge match against Talia.
Its 50% personal (he’s like hello, I was freaking TEN okay, I was kidnapped off the streets after running away and forcibly drafted into bootcamp for tween murderers-in-training, hi, yes, I would like to file a grievance complaint, why is that surprising) and 50% ideological in the sense that even all the way back then, it wasn’t like he was oblivious to the appeal Talia and the school’s way of thinking held, and the vehemence of his pushback against it and everything it represents and everyone involved in it is more than a little bit a forceful point to reject it in defiance of that very same appeal.
For Talia, its that she thinks Dick is an idiot and its a bit about wounded pride, for pretty much those exact same reasons. Talia is not her father, and is more than willing to approach things very differently than he does. Every operation she’s in charge of or AU where she runs the League, the result is a very different creature than what results of Ra’s being in charge. But despite those differences, it is important to note that Talia DOES in and of herself still believe most of the same ideology the League adopts and teaches in turn. She stays not because she HAS to but because she believes in its end goals, in its methodology. Their way of thinking is not without merit, in her eyes, and much of her worldview in terms of how she views power and what one does with it if one has it....she’s not just PRETENDING to think that way to play nice with the League.
Its what frustrates her so much about Bruce - that he can’t see the merits of her approaches, her own ideology, that he refuses to consider that there might be something to her way of things. Or more accurately, its not that he refuses to consider it, its that he DID consider it when he was younger, and discarded it as something not for him, a notion he rejected with deliberation. But as much as this is frustrating to Talia as it so often is what comes between them, she respects it because she respects HIM. She doesn’t like that he won’t bend on this subject, but she can’t precisely say she DISLIKES it either, because someone who could be made to give up his own ideals and accept hers simply because she wanted them to is not someone who would have ever captivated her interest as long as Bruce has.
But that rejection of her own worldview and methods is one thing to see coming from someone you respect and even admire for the steel of their own convictions, a peer, a rival....and another thing entirely to see coming from a ten year old brat that in Talia’s eyes, she was actually trying to HELP, in her own way, by taking this clearly vulnerable and unprotected child (given that there was no one to STOP Shrike from taking him off the streets) and giving him the tools he would need to not only survive in this world but even thrive. She, by way of Shrike, took a kid she saw as likely to just be swallowed whole by the streets and forgotten, and was trying to give him a way to make a difference, live a life of significance, from her POV....and Dick essentially spit on that and said no thanks and also fuck you.
From Bruce, she’ll take that, because she feels he’s earned that right of forceful defiance by way of the long, arduous journey he voluntarily took to become the man he is with intent.....a journey she’s been witness to more than a small part of. From Dick though, there was no way she was EVER going to see his rejection of what she and her perspective had to offer him as anything less than a slight she would not tolerate.....because she wasn’t about to view a ten year old as her peer, as an acknowledged rival the way she does Bruce.
So its that thing where you refuse to accept that a kid might have a point for thinking or wanting what he wants, because you’re the adult and you know better dammit, you have life experience and he still has baby teeth. Ungrateful, know-nothing little brat.
And the thing is, both Dick and Talia are just so freaking STUBBORN that they’ve refused to ever loosen the reins on their particular view of each other, cast eternally in amber from the second they were each respectively made aware of the other’s role or presence in that long ago aborted experiment known as Vengeance Academy.
They still view each other through that same lens, and likely always will, because its just a grudge match for the ages now, they’re each completely certain they were RIGHT to do what they did and feel what they felt about it, and they’re not budging on that. And nothing else about the other or how the other has changed or what they’ve become since that time, even though its been over fifteen years in comic book time since that happened, like....nothing else about the other, no new information or perspective on the other is even filtering through or getting past that initial formed response....because they’re not ALLOWING it to.
They’re both like.....yeah whatever, that’s cool and all, whenever the other does something new that contrasts with their view of them and the expectations they hold for how they’re likely to act at any given time based entirely on those events of fifteen years ago.....
But its in a distracted, offhanded sorta way like they’re not even paying attention to whatever that new action or behavior was, its not even really REGISTERING with them.....because they’re both just like, look, before we pay any attention to literally anything the other has done or accomplished in the last fifteen years, first we gotta settle up on this little matter of Vengeance Academy and the fact that I was RIGHT, and we’re not going ANYWHERE until they fucking admit it.
Bruce: Don’t you two think that maybe, just MAYBE, its time to let that go and perhaps form a new opinion of each other based on, oh, I don’t know....the present day?
Dick and Talia, still deadlocked in a glare: STAY OUT OF THIS BRUCE.
Daisuke and Miyako
Tumblr media
Daisuke and Miyako have a very interesting relationship, given that it’s never given anything you could call front-and-center in 02, and yet is actually one of the more prominent dynamics among the 02 cast in practice. How? Well, let’s talk about it.
It’s rather common for 02 fans to endearingly call the kids “idiots” (and especially after Kizuna, where they’re not only idiots but also idiots with the terrifying power of being recognized by society as adults). They are an incredibly chaotic group, and while all six of them are guilty in some way or another, Daisuke and Miyako are probably the ringleaders of that chaos, since the other four tend to facilitate it by being enablers.
Tumblr media
Both Daisuke and Miyako have a similar surface temperament -- they’re messy, all over the place, and not exactly the epitome of dignified, but they’re also just slightly off from each other that it does lead to some degree of friction. Daisuke, despite ostensibly seeming abrasive on the surface, is actually quite deferential and will often “deflate” when people criticize him, or at least, even if he does lash out, it’ll be more in a defensive sense that comes from him thinking he’s being made fun of or attacked. Miyako, on the other hand, is absolutely someone who will go on the aggressive, make her opinions clear and continue to aggressively put her foot down at anything she hates, is more fond of physical contact (both in an aggressive fighting manner and in an affectionate hugging manner), and will easily get much more impatient and demanding about what she wants. You can see them both in action when they bicker over a dumpling in 02 episode 37; Miyako’s the first one to jump on Daisuke for taking “her” dumpling, Daisuke lashes back at her defensively, and then Miyako starts physically manhandling him. They’re both brash, so of course it naturally leads to some friction, because they don’t really give off the appearance of being happy-happy-joy-joy with each other.
But just because they’re prone to bickering doesn’t mean they dislike each other! In fact, 02 was quite big on the concept of friends being able to do more aggressive things with each other because they trust each other so much, most infamously Yamato punching Taichi in episode 10 with full awareness that Taichi wouldn’t take it badly.
Daisuke and Miyako, in particular, come off as the type to be specifically comfortable with their exact level of bickering-and-yet-closeness. As I’ve pointed out a few times, they never used any honorifics for each other, even though Daisuke normally treats his elders with respect and Miyako uses the proper -kun for most younger boys. Miyako will even go as far as sometimes calling Daisuke with second-person anta (Japanese generally discourages second-person when it’s avoidable, and especially clipped/slang versions like this, so Miyako is effectively handling Daisuke roughly). But whenever circumstances cause one of them to start acting weirdly polite or endearing to the other, it’s made clear that the other finds it really weird.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So in other words, it seems like once the two met and started hanging out together as part of their group of Chosen Children, they unconsciously identified each other as fellow disaster children (or, at least, not worth keeping a sense of polite distance with). And really, they don’t actually “bicker” all that much as much as it’s more like bantering -- Daisuke’s an easy target for teasing but can easily deal with Miyako being so in-your-face, and conversely Miyako can take a lot of Daisuke’s lashing out without taking it too personally.
Tumblr media
This is especially interesting when you take into account the fact that they don’t actually even pretend to dislike each other! Certainly, the way they’re prone to bantering and not necessarily even that self-aware means they probably wouldn’t be able to easily say upfront that they’re close with each other, but they also don’t really put on the air of disliking each other at all, and are perfectly happy to work together like they’re partners in crime at times. Miyako is very straightforward about recruiting Daisuke into her little scheme to force Iori and Ken to get along in episode 30, and they’re happy to cheerfully play with each other and act generally in-sync like in episode 38.
(The incident in episode 30 is also of interest because it’s also subtly reminiscent of their overall dynamic -- Miyako’s the one who actively hatches the plan that ultimately ends up in disaster, with Daisuke simply agreeing and playing along.)
In fact, I would even dare to venture saying that prior to Ken’s bonding with the group, Miyako was probably Daisuke’s closest friend (even if it’s unlikely he’d have admitted it). With Daisuke putting Hikari on a pedestal due to his crush on her, having difficulty with Takeru not really being straightforward and constantly on the defensive around him, and Iori requiring polite and distant handling in general, Miyako was the right combination of someone he could bounce off of without necessarily offending her deeply (especially because she’s a rather affectionate person and isn’t the type to really hold grudges). Daisuke, being a painfully transparent and straightforward person, plays best with other people who are clear and transparent, so even if Miyako may be a bit difficult to deal with, the fact she’s very honest and straightforward made her someone Daisuke could be comfortable around. Within the series, they never quite got to the more thoughtful and intimate level that Daisuke and Ken or Miyako and Hikari got, but they developed a very comfortable rapport around each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Miyako, for her part, cares a lot about Daisuke’s welfare, and is in fact quite willing to be open about it whenever she’s not bantering with him -- a good example is episode 24, when she notices Daisuke is feeling down from V-mon being unable to evolve and himself being left out of Takeru and Hikari going off together, and goes forward, affectionately grabs him, and gives him a job to do in babysitting the Punimon. At first this looks like simply a way to distract him so that Takeru and Hikari can have some space, but we’re later treated to some shots of Miyako looking at him fondly, making it clear that she was very much invested in making sure he was happy with something to do -- and she even muses that she felt he’d be perfect for the job. (And she gets bonus points for correctly catching on that Daisuke is happiest when he has some kind of purpose.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And there are some times where Daisuke has some, well, interesting reactions when it comes to Miyako -- in regards to expressing preferences with boys, given that he has a sudden taken-aback reaction to Miyako declaring openly that she likes cute boys like Michael in episode 14 (something that really shouldn’t be surprising to everyone...), or suddenly getting invested in making a case for himself when Miyako calls Ken’s laugh cute in episode 38. Of course, the easiest explanation to beeline to is reading this as ship bait or hinting that Daisuke has a crush on Miyako, but regardless of whether you want to read it as shippy or not, I think it’s boring to just end the analysis at merely that and call it a day -- so, either way, Daisuke really does care about Miyako’s opinion of him and her approval, not entirely unlike the way he does with most elders. And given that, in Hurricane Touchdown, he lashes out at Wallace for attempting to flirt with her (to the point of it metaphorically breaking his goggles), he can get surprisingly protective of her, too!
Tumblr media
Bring it around a whole eight years later in Kizuna, and the first time you see both of them on screen together, Daisuke of course picks up the banter with her -- cheerfully, of course.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is later followed up by another amusing interaction in which Miyako, rather impatient with Daisuke being wishy-washy and beating around the bush talking with Yamato about what they found out about Menoa, physically grabs the phone from him (again: much more prone to intervening physically) and gets more directly to the point than he did -- leaving Daisuke to not really argue back, but pout at her irritably.
But of course, they’re still willing to be perfectly in sync at times -- during the drama CD, which takes place right before the movie, Daisuke has no qualms jumping in once she and Hikari go on a dramatic spiel about Spain misadventures.
So in other words -- they’re the same as ever.
it’s honestly wild to me how many people reject forgiveness in favor of barring grudges (or the equally sad and kind of a copout, “i forgive but i never forget”) and their reason is usually one of “protecting themselves.”
i knew someone who used to employ the exact same thought process. she and i got into a fight and she really upset me, like she threw a comment at me that cut me deep, such that i broke it off with her almost immediately. she tried to smooth things over and pretend like it didn’t happen but i couldn’t bear it because she never acknowledged it or tried to make it up to me. she then gave up and threw a fit and barred a grudge against me. i cried out my tears and licked my wounds and picked up and moved on (it happened at the end of august, too, so come new year’s eve, it was literally a fresh start with me). so, that’s all there was to it with me, but it got so bad with her that she would snap at people, just at random. she spoke with a really terse tone all the time and it came to a point she stopped enjoying things.
her excuse? “to protect myself from it happening again.”
the cost? she was just angry all the time. but angry at me and angry at herself. i remember watching her, too, like i stalked her archive on here for a while before i decided to finally hit her up again and tell her how she made me feel. and maybe... you know. cool things off a bit. but prior to then, she and her friends on here isolated me and talked trash about me, and yet they would never address me, though. very closed off, too, like you could tell something was wrong, but woe betide the poor bastard who tried to talk to her, though. she wound up jumping ship from here about a year later and i knew it had something to do with it all. once in a while, i’ll think about her, like how she’s doing or if she’s achieved anything she dreamed of when we were friends.
if you’ve followed me for any length of time, you’ve seen me talk about how a shocking amount of people on here treat me horribly, and usually for the most laughable reasons, like disagreeing on my beliefs or telling me i’m a shitty person for writing about taboo subjects. this was the one that started it all and was ultimately foreshadowing the unhealthy habits of the current collective. this mindset of “why would i forgive them?”
when my parents split when i was 17, i learned of a quote that goes like this: “holding a grudge is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” i’ve never held a grudge in my life anyways, but that really spoke to me, especially since i was the only one in my family who took her feelings about it head on and recovered and came out way healthier. much earlier on, too. sure, i’m dealing with repercussions now, namely my brother exiling himself from our family and not even talking to either of my parents - out of resentment, no less - and i want to ask him “what’re you doing, man? what is your deal?” but i don’t hold it against him, though.
if you follow me for any length of time, you know that when i get angry it’s like a stick of dynamite, i just get it out of me. that’s just how i am. and i think grudges are literally just the stupidest things. you may think you’re doing yourself a favor, but you’re not: you’re actually destroying yourself.
and yes. “i forgive but i never forget” is a copout, and a big one at that, too. you still remember what they did to you but let me ask you this: do you still feel the same way as when it first happened? are you still upset? are you still angry about it? or have you genuinely moved on and you can use it constructively? has your life improved since employing that? (so, it’s not just a copout but a loaded statement, too) but otherwise, i don’t know whether to trust you, tread carefully around you, or be completely reasonable with you.
look. take this from me. someone who’s been bullied to extremes and often to the point of being pushed over the edge, too. it’s perfectly okay, and healthy even, to be angry: you are the owner of your feelings and i have no say in it whatsoever, and if anything, i honor your feelings.
but sometimes, you have to remember what it does to you down the line. sometimes, your so-called safety net shreds and you find yourself falling into the waters. sometimes, it gets to you so much that you fall asleep at the wheel and yet you wonder why your car is wrecked.
sometimes... you really need to let it go.
and quick reminder: forgiveness is not, in any way shape or form, “letting them off the hook.” quite the contrary: if anything, it’s to help you come to terms with it all. it’s to remind you of your own emotional strength. and that, in my opinion - and experience - will protect you far better than pent-up anger, resentment, and bitterness.
‘If you are thinking of continuing that professor angst I am fine with that. Just so you know. No pressure’
‘okay I need part 2 of prof! harry angst more than the air that i breathe!!!!’
the people ask and i deliver ofc
The first time Harry calls you, you let it go to voicemail.
It’s not that you’re trying to be petty - you just can’t bear to talk to him, to hear his apologies and how he’ll pretend to understand. If he understood, you think, he wouldn’t have said half the shit he did. And you still feel as though, if you hear his voice - if you try and defend yourself against him - you may just break down into tears again. So, as you pick up your phone to glance at the name and photo of whoever’s calling you, you merely place it back on your desk, burying your face back in your homework.
The second time you pointedly decline it and on your lockscreen is a text notification from one Harry S. and your eyes scan the words as fast as they possibly can.
Harry S.: Please call me, or at least text me.
It’s simple and sweet and you know you should ignore it but God, you can’t bring yourself to. So you swipe through, staring at the message when you’ve unlocked your phone and trying to envision what to say.
If you were smarter, or perhaps a tad more grudging, you’d leave the message alone with the small seen at 9:05 attached to it. But you start typing anyway, dropping your pencil against your notebook as you lean back in your seat.
Y/N: text
You press send and drop your phone back onto the table, eyes dropping back down to your work. But you can’t pay attention to it, now, the words clouding beneath your gaze, and you’re entirely too aware of your phone, sitting next to you, not a single notification buzzing through. And you know, of course, you shouldn’t be awaiting his response like this, but ...
It’s not like you want to be mad at him. You don’t want to fight - thinking about that makes tears burn behind your eyes, and you certainly don’t want to cry again. What you do want is to know why he acted like a jackass, to hear some semblance of an excuse.
At least it would prove he cared.
When your phone buzzes you give yourself just a moment before picking it up - to preserve your dignity, perhaps, or to prove yourself to someone who doesn’t exist. You squint down at your screen, examining what he’d replied.
Harry S.: Can you please pick up the phone?
For a moment, you contemplate that - hearing the phone ring a third time and picking it up, pressing it to your ear, listening to him apologize and tell you why he said the shit he did. But you can’t think of it without the entirely-too-familiar feeling of tears bubbling behind your eyes, so you shake your head as your fingers fly over the small keyboard on your phone.
Y/N: i can’t
Harry S.: Why not?
There’s something distinctly awkward about reminding him that he made you cry - though you’re sure he recalls - so you merely reply my roommate is here, and stare down at your texts, awaiting his response with a desperation that’s nearly embarrassing.
Harry S.: Then I’ll come to your dorm. I want to talk to you in person.
Harry S.: Please?
If you had to name your own fatal flaw, you reckon it would be Harry in his entirety.
Y/N: sure
And your homework is entirely forgotten, for the moment, as you lean back and wait.
--
The second you got the notification, proclaiming I’m here, you’re out of the door so fast your head feels like it’s spinning. Your key is tucked into the pockets of your sweatpants because you’re almost entirely positive you’ll hold your ground and refuse to go back to Harry’s apartment if he asks - assuming he does.
And you try to have faith in your ability to sustain your morals, but you’re not too confident.
His car is parked in the exact spot it’s been so many times before, and you can see where his head is dropped back against the headrest, hood pulled tight over his curls. You can recognize the hoodie as one you’d worn so many times around his apartment - light purple and just a bit too small on him, which is why you always wear it and he never does, and you can’t quite understand why he’s wearing it now.
You knock on the window and he rolls it down, and you stick your head into his car, eyes darting around until they rise up to meet his, and -
You hate the way your heart chips, just a bit, as you see his red eyes. But, you decide internally, you can’t get caught up in it.
He was being the asshole. He should be crying.
“What?” It comes out so much harsher than you’d anticipated and you feel heat burning your cheeks as his eyebrows furrow, just a bit. So you clear your throat, lowering your eyes to the passenger seat you usually reside. “What do you want to talk about?”
Harry doesn’t say anything, at first, but you keep your eyes locked on your seat. Already you feel your words burning in your throat and you hope this conversation won’t require you to say too much, because you don’t want him to see how upset he’d made you.
You don’t fucking want him to see you cry.
There’s another beat and you want to walk away, fish your key from your pocket and lock yourself back in your room and accept the fact that you’ve wasted your fucking time but then he finally finally says, voice soft and so much gentler than yours had been, “I’m so sorry.”
You’re expecting more and you raise your eyebrows, looking back up at him to meet his eyes, but he’s staring at the same spot on the passenger seat than you were, and you can feel your anger (and those fucking tears) already rising. “Okay.”
“Okay?”
“If that’s all you have to say, then I’m going inside, Harry,” you tell him, sounding entirely more nonchalant than you’re feeling, and you can see, from the corner of your eye, the way his grip on the steering wheel tightens at your words. But it has the desired effect as Harry’s eyes rise to meet yours, and you swallow as your gazes meet.
He truly does look distraught in a way that you don’t reckon he has the acting ability to display and you revel in that, briefly, that you’ve made him even half as upset as he made you. And you don’t think you could bring yourself to go back inside without some sort of closure but you need him to think you’re over it.
(It’s only been an hour or two, though, so you don’t think you even have the acting ability to pull that off.)
“Don’t go.” Harry’s voice is desperate, pleading, and you squeeze your eyes shut. (Because you hate the way he acted, hate how shitty you made him feel, but deep down inside, you don’t want him to feel like that, too.) “Please. I’m so sorry, baby. I don’t know - don’t know why I acted like such a dick.”
You pull your head out from the window, straightening yourself up and crossing your arms loosely over your chest. You’re not quite sure why - something about increasing the distance makes the lump in the back of your throat seem less massive. And you still aren’t quite sure of what to say but you try, anyway. “I don’t understand,” you tell him, and looking into his eyes is making it more difficult to speak so you look down at your toes. Your voice is strained and cracking and you’re not sure how far you’ll make it into your monologue without the tears breaking out. “You embarrassed me, Harry, and you didn’t even care, and then - and then -”
Fuck.
The tear that had been pooling in your eyes finally overflow and you bring the sleeve of your sweater up to your cheek, wiping away the droplet. You sniffle, opening your mouth to speak again but your voice catches in the back of your throat, preventing any fucking noise from coming out, and you squeeze your eyes shut.
Yeah, fuck.
You press your palms to your eyes, digging the heel of your hand into your tear duct to try and prevent the merciless tears bubbling over but it’s practically no use. They couldn’t be stopped no matter how hard you try, and so you stop trying.
“Baby -” you can hear the sound of the car door, opening and shutting, and within seconds there’s a pair of arms wrapped around you, and what used to be so comforting less than 24 hours ago makes your stomach turn. “Please don’t cry. Please -”
“No,” you mumble, hands dropping from your eyes and pressing to his chest, pushing him back so there’s at least a foot of sidewalk between you. You can see the glistening in his eyes and you suspect he’s entirely too close to being in the same state as you. “Don’t want people to see. Know - I know you don’t care, but I do.”
Harry shakes his head vehemently and you sniffle, wiping your running nose with your sleeve, and when your eyes meet his again his emotion is entirely unreadable. “I do care,” he tells you, and you exhale, glancing up at the dark sky above you, dotted with stars. “I promise, I do. And I’m so sorry - I really am.”
You hate everything about what’s happening - hate the way you’re crying, hate the way he’s going to cry, hate the fact that you want to wrap yourself in his arms and accept every single apology he’s giving you. Because you know him - or, at least, you think you do - and you feel like he’s being sincere, that he’d never act half so nasty again.
In goes a shaky breath and it comes out just as unsteady. Your tears are beginning to calm down but it’s still difficult to come out with any sentence. And, in the back of your mind, you hate how exposed you feel right now - standing out where anyone could look from their window and see you two, looking like the climax of a coming-of-age film, both crying.
“Can you look at me?” the soft voice in front of you asks, and you tear your gaze up from your shoes to meet his eye. “I’ll do anything - anything - to make this up to you, baby, I swear.” Then there’s another pause as your mind whirs and his eyebrows raise, a joyless smile peeking through onto his lips. “I love you so much.”
Fuck, again. You take in another breath and shake your head - his shoulders drop and you can see the tears welling in his eyes again. But, no, you’re not shaking your head at him - perhaps more at yourself, or at the situation, or at whoever may be watching you from their windows.
You knew the key in your pocket would go unused as you take a step forward, wrapping your arms around his neck and pressing your body to his. Harry’s arms close around your waist, holding your body to his as if it’s a privilege he’s been deprived of, and you can feel the lone tears still trickling down your cheeks wetting his neck. “I love you, too,” you tell him, voice muffled against the material of his hoodie. His grip on you tightens, and you feel yourself practically melting into his arms.
The two of you stay there for a minute, and then you pull apart, and his thumb goes up to wipe at the tears still soaking the bottom of your eyes. There’s not much that has to be said - or maybe there’s too much, for the moment - and you relish in the silence, of the contentedness, of the resolution.
Day 19
Title: Broken Bonds
Note: Not at me watching last year’s Youtube drama as I wrote this because I am bored as fuck and did not understand the drama so ahahaha. Anyways, nope, no deaths here either. Just the normal angst. Not one of my favorites, but one I loathe. ANYWAYS.
˜”*°•.˜”*°•.•°*”˜.•°*”˜
“You’re the only thing that makes me smile.”
“Then tell me why you thought he was me.”
Twins had this special bond, it was tighter than any siblings’ bonds. An invisible red string connected them and even if they were furious at one another, they’d always make up. Fights were especially common and it was usually one twin that was more raucous than the other. Either way, their connection was deeper than anyone else’s.
But in this situation, Atsumu Miya did not know whether to forget about it and still hold a grudge against Osamu or pretend everything was fine. He had already come to the conclusion that he’d never forget about the moment and he had told himself that Y/N L/N no longer existed. Not in his mind. Not in his heart. She would never belong to him again and he would never belong to her.
She was a ghost of a memory.
Atsumu, currently outside in the freezing cold, had trudged down the city, trying to be alone in his own thoughts but he could only remember what had happened on that fateful day.
I’m trying to forget about you, but I still hope you’ll be there if I fall.
Once he found a bench that was separated from the people he knew wouldn’t go searching for him there, he sat down, the cold nipping at him as he wrapped his arms around his waist, staring at the floor.
Vivid memories started coming at him full force and closing his eyes, he allowed them to flood his mind, not thinking of anyone else. Only thinking of what had happened.
~
“Hey, don’t be sad because we lost.” Atsumu said gently, taking her hands and rubbing the backs of her hands with his thumbs.
“You trained so hard, everyday you talked to me about making it past the semifinals and getting to the finals and you got defeated by a boy who looks like a tangerine!” Y/N said, staring down at their entwined hands. Usually, Atsumu would be teasing her about almost crying over something simple, but it was something he absolutely loved about her. She’d cover up her true emotions but Atsumu would always be there and take that mask away.
Atsumu couldn’t help but chuckle at her outburst. “They were good. We just need to be better. Don’t cry, okay? I don’t like it when ya cry.” He wrapped his arms around her and put his chin on her shoulder, shaking his head and spoke softly. “I love you sometimes.”
They held each other tightly and Y/N whispered, “I love you most.”
That’s how he wished they could stay for the rest of their lives but alas, it wouldn’t go that way.
~
“You’re kidding me.” Atsumu growled as he marched into their house, whipping around to stare at Y/N. “You have got to be kidding me.”
“‘Tsumu, he meant nothing to me, it was an accident--!” Y/N pleaded as she followed him quickly, her heart beating erratically. It felt like it was breaking, but it wasn’t in her position to have a broken heart. It was in his, she did something that she’d never forgive herself for.
“Yeah? An accident, huh? How do you mistake HIM for ME?!” Atsumu almost screamed, trying to keep his emotions under wraps. “A-And Samu! Where is he?”
“Atsumu!” Y/N cried out as she grabbed his arm. He looked down to stare at her and ripped his arm out of his grip, glaring at her. “Please just listen to me!”
“Why would I listen to you? You kissed my own twin, thinking it was me and you never pulled away until you saw me walk in!” The last sentence was on the verge of a scream and his mouth twisted. He turned around, burying his face in his hands before they crawled up to grab his hair. His breaths started getting heavier as he recalled the exact moments that it had happened. “You like him more than me. Just say it! It’s always been him, it’s always him! He’s the favorite, everyone loves him more than me! And so do you!”
“No, that’s a lie! I just--” She couldn’t say anything more, just stood there dumbfounded.
“See? Even you can’t come up with a lie. So…” He took a deep breath. “So your love was fake? Is that it?”
“‘Tsumu--”
He let out a small chuckle, it wasn’t snarky or angry or happy, it was the chuckle that would be followed by a waterfall of tears. It was the chuckle that people were scared of, especially because it hid what the other person was actually feeling.
It was the laugh that would show how broken the person actually was.
“I’ll be okay.” He looked at her, his eyes glossed over as he smiled a bit. “Go to him. I don’t deserve you if you really liked him that much. Just go. It’s okay, I always pick myself up anyways. I don’t know why I thought you were different anyways. You’re like the other girls. Can’t believe I loved you enough to make sure you were always okay, to think you would always be by my side.”
Y/N stared at him, her eyes welling up. It was her own fault that he was now like this. She didn’t say anything as she walked out the door, never to return. Osamu had gotten there an hour later and knocked on their bedroom door, but Atsumu never responded. He was sitting on his bed, having locked the door so that Osamu wouldn’t come in.
Osamu had resigned to the fact that he’d have to sleep in the living room. He didn’t have the heart to even go against his own brother, not after what he did. He deserved the cold shoulder,
Atsumu was subdued the next day. He hadn’t slept all night, he looked like death. He never looked in his brother’s direction, nor did he ever look at Y/N.
Already was he losing his mind.
~
The increasing cold started biting him back into reality and he opened his eyes slowly. Snow had been falling all around him and he hadn’t noticed, too lost in his train of thought. He held his hand out slowly, watching the snowflake melt on the spot in his hand.
The glowing white landscape was silent, no wind coming through. That silence was broken by the smallest of whines. It was a whine that destroyed anyone’s heart. A slow cry warbled out of his throat as tears slid down his cheeks. It was dangerous to cry at that very moment, but even then, trying to stop the tears would be like trying to move the snow clouds away.
Atsumu started walking back home, hands in his pockets. He tried to fight against his tears, but it was useless. All of it was gone, all because his brother was much better, much more desirable than him. The battle he tried to win was a losing one, victory not on his side.
No longer would he be able to say “I love you” to the girl he’d always wanted to spend his life with. No longer would he look at her the same way. And the bond with his brother? Damaged.
Choked sobs rose out of him, making his shoulders shake as he tried to control them but he was screaming at himself. He was so stupid. Of course he wasn’t her choice. Of course.
I just wanted to love you. Until I found you looking at someone who I shared a bond with.
Why I love Katara from ATLA
Katara is underrated and doesn’t deserve all the hate people give her. Like everyone else in the Gaang, she was an invaluable member that they couldn’t have survived without. Hear me out—this is going to be a long one.
Tumblr media
First, her role as team mom: We all know that the Gaang saw Katara as a motherly figure—even Sokka, her older brother. Remember The Desert? Aang was having a mental breakdown over Appa, Sokka was high on cactus juice, Toph couldn’t see, and Katara literally held them together. Sure, sometimes Katara lost her temper or acted bossy, but come on! Whose mom doesn’t? In fact, Toph and Sokka agreed in The Runaway that even though Katara got on their nerves sometimes, it was that exact trait of bossiness that the Gaang relied on so much. And I think a lot of those scenes where Katara fussed over things were super cute; it literally made the Gaang seem like a little family.
Second: I know people hate on Katara for talking about her mom so much. But admit it, we were all annoying at one point in our teenage years. And imagine if something happened to your mom or a similar parental figure. If you were a young child when it happened? If you spent years and years thinking it was your fault? If your father was always away and you had to step up as your own mother’s replacement, forced to shove that darkness deep down, hoping for the day when you could get some closure?
When Aang realized he lost his people and broke down in The Southern Air Temple, Katara was there for him. She said it was okay to be sad, that she understood, that she was going to help him. She didn’t have to do that. She barely knew him at the time. But grief is grief, no matter its size and form and how it’s dealt with, and she found a way to get through to him. Same with Haru and Jet. Katara reached out to them by exchanging stories with them, and listened to theirs with compassion as well.
Tumblr media
Of course, everyone expresses/copes with grief in different ways, but Katara’s grief wasn’t any lesser than her friends, nor were her coping mechanisms any less valid.
Let’s talk about Sokka. He admitted he saw Katara as a mother, and that he couldn’t even recall Kya’s face. He also seemed to be much closer with Hakoda throughout the show. Might I also remind you of Sokka’s general goofiness and rather out-of-the-blue sexist attitude at the beginning. I really doubt the sexism was due to Southern Water Tribe Culture—or why would Kanna go there to escape the sexism of the north? Sokka likely developed that mindset as a coverup for his grief, whereas Katara had to bottle up her feelings and step up as the motherly figure as a young child. Sokka’s coping mechanism was to goof around and pretend nothing got to him, and Aang avoided his duties and hardships until he eventually learned to confront them.
Yes, Katara said some awful things to both Sokka and Aang in The Southern Raiders, but she was a teenage girl mourning the loss of the person she loved most in the world, and whom she seemed to develop her whole personality and identity around. Sometimes you lash out, lose control, and accidentally hurt your loved ones—especially if you’re just a child forced to grow up too fast in a war torn world.
In any case, there’s no doubt that Katara regretted what she said to Sokka right after she said it (look at her expression in that scene), and it’s almost certain that she went and made up with him afterwards. It wasn’t the first time one of the siblings accidentally hurt the other, and it certainly wasn’t the last time either. But there’s no doubt that the siblings loved each other unconditionally, which gave them the ability to make up no matter what, every single time without fail.
Tumblr media
Third: I know a lot of people criticize Katara for her initial mistrust of Zuko. True, Katara tends to hold grudges. But from her pov, Zuko did break her trust (which she gave out quite readily, especially for someone from the water tribe) and none of Team Avatar actually witnessed Zuko’s epic redemption arc firsthand. Katara also felt extremely guilty and scared for almost wasting the spirit water on Zuko’s scar, which would’ve ended Aang for good.
The others in the Gaang had more inclination to trust Zuko due to Iroh defending him when he came to them for help in Ba Sing Se, while Katara was stuck in a creepy underground cave probably having a panic attack and fully expecting to be killed at any given moment. I’d probably lash out too if someone locked me up and suddenly yeeted in a guy who tried to kill me and my friends on multiple previous occasions, even if his hair did have a major glow up.
Speaking of Zuko and his glow up... oMg hE’s sO hOt! Cute fictional boy with dark hair, we all stan!!! Draco in leather pants, anyone? While I love Zuko as much as any ATLA fan, he did his fair share of bad things. The entire first season? His betrayal of Iroh? Sure, Katara had her moments, but did you guys really forget how Zuko treated Iroh? How he constant belittled him on the ship in S1 and in the prison in S3, while still demanding Iroh’s advice? Of course, Zuko got better and gained redemption and forgiveness—he absolutely deserved it in the end—but doesn’t Katara deserve similar sympathy after making far lesser mistakes than Zuko? Is it because she’s not an attractive bad boy? Imagine Katara as a hot dude with a brooding, chiseled face, and I guarantee you the same people who hate her so vehemently will automatically stan her. It’s almost as if there’s a double standard for female characters or something...
Tumblr media
In conclusion: Katara cares so, so much with all her heart about everything and everyone, loving and hating with equal passion, and I think that’s beautiful. She is the epitome of gentle yet unyielding femininity (as opposed to Toph’s brashness or Azula’s coolness), and we need more female characters like her who are unabashedly feminine and proud of it. In today’s society, girls are often shamed for being girly, hence the “mean popular girl” trope and the “not like other girls” trend. That’s why we see so many tomboys in fiction, girls who are strong and tough and one of the guys. That’s why we see so many ice queens in fiction, who are equal parts beautiful and deadly in everything they do. Of course, these types of girls are just as valid (and why Toph, Azula, and so many other ATLA girls are so popular and iconic), but women irl are so incredible because of their diversity—not only in appearance but in personality.
That’s what makes ATLA so good: each character has their strengths and weaknesses and undergoes an incredible character arc. Each member of the Gaang is unique and essential and they all balance each other out personality-wise. Without Katara, ATLA would not be the masterpiece it is, would not be so acclaimed for its incredibly written characters. Without Katara, western animation would be lacking of an incredibly written character, a POC girly girl who is soft and gentle and nurturing and can kick ass in a dress and fancy hair. Without Katara, little girls who grew up watching ATLA would grow up with perhaps many good female role models, but they would miss out on one in particular who would teach them it’s okay to care too much, it’s okay to cry and be angry and hate, it’s okay because in the end things will always get better and so will you. That it’s going to be okay, and there’s always hope and light in the world no matter what life throws at you. That’s what Katara means to me, and that’s why I love her so much.
I’ve gotten a lot of complaints about Joie University, claiming they’re guilty of all kinds of terrible things-- including but not limited to blatant racism, bullying, stalking, and harassment. So here are links to what’s been sent anonymously and posted previously, what’s still in my inbox, and the addition of someone’s longer, submitted experience all written up in one location.
These are all from different people.
Joie Academy treated me like crap as well and practically told me that 'I seem like the kinda person no one would get along with in the real world'... I am surprised people are still there cause the admins are the worst and put me through so much.
Hey! I just want to warn people about Joie. I honestly thought it would have died by now with the toxic admins. I joined that group near the beginning and was kicked without a single word from the admins AFTER they internet stalked me and found out my exact location. They held, and probably still hold, a grudge against me for no reason, or at least none that has ever been explained to me. It's super creepy and I'd be wary.
If you are not a gay or bisexual white Male then stay away from Joie they pretend to be accepting but are not. As a minority female I was bullied constantly and the admins did nothing. But the moment the same person bullied a white male they kicked that person out. Joie is toxic.
Joie is the sole reason I ended up on Anti depressants....
Joie is 100% the most toxic RP I have ever been in. One of the admins is great, she is shy and let's the other admin walk all over her. Basically you are treated like a pariah if you weren't close or have a ship with that one admin. It took me ages to leave and when I did I actually began to feel happier. So I am glad you made that post and I hope that it will stop people from joining.
Honestly relieved to see Joie being exposed for the toxic roleplay that it is, you have given those who have stayed quiet a voice and now they're being exposed. And seeing everything they are saying is just re-affirmation that they are toxic. I was in Joie for a short period and time and I saw what the admins were saying to a friend of mine privately and it was disgusting. Good riddance.
I am done being silent about what Joie University did to me So I was in Joie for about 6 months, to be honest if I didn’t have my ship partner and one other friend there I would have left within a month. I played Mercedes and you know Mercedes gets enough hate on her own. But I joined and at first I was accepted by everyone so I thought, I finally found a group that I could join and enjoy. Boy was I wrong. It became very clear within a matter of a few weeks that they didn’t really like minority characters. I was among one of two minority charcters among mostly white males who were gay. But I ignored it because I thought it was a good environment. That is until a Sam player joined. That is when the hate started for me. Both an admin and another character wanted their character with Sam but Sam was interested in Mercedes. They were really great together but every day I found hate in my inbox and it was a really uncomfortable feeling. The person who played Jeff was one who wanted Sam for himself and it was clear by the way he spoke to Mercedes. It all came to a head when Jeff and Mercedes got into a fight because Jeff’s new boyfriend had hurt Sam’s feelings and Mercedes took up for her boyfriend. Jeff started being really disrespectful to her and then wrote a text to his boyfriend saying if Mercedes showed up to the sorority house he would kick her ass and kick her out by her nappy ass weave. That pissed me off. I felt like that was extremely disrespectful and racist. You don’t say things like that. It hurt me OOC as a black woman and IC as a Mercedes player But the admins did nothing. Then the player and their friend started harassing me. I told the admins over and over and they said there was nothing they could do. The player even lied on me with no proof ( I showed the admins proof of the hate) and the admins basically pressured me saying I was welcome to leave if it bothered me so much. I was really upset and hurt. The hate just continued and I finally had enough and left. Once I left the group the Sam player and I worked on a couple FanFics together. I hadn’t even thought about Joie after I left. But they hate continued. One of the admins ( I recently found out) joined a group pretending to be me with my name and was extremely rude playing Mercedes as a stereotype, thank goodness a few people who knew me told me about it and the admin left the group. Turns out she was just there to spy on their group so they could steal ideas. Then they started sending hate to the Sam player pretending it was me mad at a new ship. I tried explaining that I didn’t even follow Joie anymore but the damage was done and I lost a friend and writing partner. The group the admins they are all toxic and I am still paying the price for making the mistake of joining that group.
