Meeting Clara (but happy and cannon)
i had full intentions of coloring this. but that would take forever and i reached my limit as far as this comic goes a while ago. i have no idea what it was, but this comic fought me every step of the way. It didn't matter if i was having a good art day or not, as soon as i opened this document, i'd struggle.
But it's done now. so there's that

Asking some AU comp competitors & supporters:
- Are there any AUs you weren't familiar with that have recently caught your attention, or that you would like to learn more about?
- What are some AUs/fanworks that you enjoy, and would encourage more people to go check out? (Doesn't have to be in the comp!)
i'll be real, i'm super bad at following aus and even worse trying to getting into new ones. i know and occasionally check a bunch of aus, but i don't have the energy or time to get invested in a lot of them ;-;
the few i am invested in listed below, in no particular order.
- finding home + kraang leo / sad-leon
- call me here (i will disappear) + idiot's guide to blindfold chess /rbtlvr
- at my worst / teainthesnow (go look at their art too)
- snapdragon /bluesgras
- wanderer /vangh17a
biased? maybe a little. everyone's creations are a joy to read and super interesting despite my bias.

Day 1 of Daily Writing Family Web
“Do you feel like there's something missing?”
Leo looked up from his phone and towards his twin. Donnie was awake again, lightly scratching his fingers against the scarf just to feel the fabric. His focus solely on said scarf to the point where Leo almost questioned whether he was speaking to him or not.
“Like legitimately or are you just asking because you're high on glitter slime,” Leo asked, head tilted to get a better glance at Donnie.
Donnie shot him a glare.
“I'm not high, I’m drowsy,” he muttered. “They're different.”
“Not by much,” Leo said with a shrug. “Either would be enough to get you to ask weird, hypothetical questions like this, apparently.”
“Forget I asked,” he grumbled, looking away once again.
“Wait, were you serious?”
“Not anymore,” Donnie muttered.
“But why?” Leo asked, shifting on the spare mattress so he was properly facing his twin.
“Just drop it.”
“Yeah, no can do,” Leo said. “Now what's up?”
Donnie stayed silent out of spite.
“Come on, Dee. Share with the class,” Leo goaded. Donnie ignored him further. “You know I’ll just pester you for the rest of the day until you doooo...”
“You're my least favorite brother,” Donnie stated.
“I'm sure,” Leo said dismissively. “So?”
“Defeated sigh,” Donnie muttered to himself before continuing. “I don't...properly know. It just feels like there's something missing sometimes.”
“Like now?”
“Possibly,” Donnie said.
“What's missing?”
“I don't know,” Donnie stressed. “Something. Like we used to have something, something important, but we don't anymore. And we haven't had it in so long we don't even remember what we're missing.”
“But you can tell something used to be there, just enough to miss it,” Leo finished for him.
“Yes,” Donnie said, his shoulders losing some of the tenseness he had gained during the conversation. There was silence between the two for a long moment. It was nice, until Leo broke it.
“Nope, doesn't sound familiar,” he said with a shrug.
Donnie glared at him again, this time smacking him in the back of the head with his foot.
“Rude!”
“I'm disowning you,” Donnie informed him. “April's my new twin now. You're just an annoying dumdum turtle I happen to live with.”
“That's uncalled for. And definitely not how twins work,” Leo tried to argue.
“It does now, ex-twin,” Donnie muttered.
“You must be feeling better if you're coherent enough to disown me,” Leo joked. Donnie shrugged halfheartedly, but otherwise ignored him.

Okay, I think I've figured out the most succinct way to explain my issue with a lot of modern fandom takes and how a lot of younger fans engage with media.
The commercialization of narrative-themed meta material has caused fans to view extrapolation as anathema.
Let me explain, less succinctly.
Something can be featured prominently in the source material, but if a piece of official meta comes out that says that thing isn't true, modern fandom goes "That's not canon, then," instead of going "Whoever wrote this was clearly at-odds with the source material on this point."
Further, this leads to people saying that if the creators haven't confirmed something in this meta material, then there's no way to prove it's canon. They demand "word of god" to explain the story to them like revealing the moral of a fable to a five year old over actually engaging with the narrative as it was presented in its original form and paying attention to how implications in that narrative make the story into something cohesive, something mentally engaging, something emotionally powerful.
If two characters' interactions in the source material are built entirely on a series of literary devices used almost exclusively to indicate romantic affection and both emotionally self-destruct when they lose the other one, but the creators don't say that they're in love using the words "they are in love," then many fans insist that the relationship isn't canon. Likewise, if two characters make it excessively clear through the course of a narrative that they're not in a traditional romantic relationship, up to and including rejecting offers for dates and referring to their relationship as "not serious," but then someone involved in the development of the source material says that they are madly in love with one another, then many fans insist that the relationship is canon.
It's literally a subversion of the writing rule of thumb generally expressed as "show, don't tell." A good narrative assumes those engaging with it will do so in the way with which the media in question is generally engaged—it wants to show you, and let you understand what you're seeing. Insisting that you need someone "on the inside" to tell you what every line of dialogue and character interaction "actually" means, even if what is shown is dramatically different from what you're told, is certainly your prerogative—but it's not the way most narratives are meant to be experienced.
To relate this directly to the fandom in which I'm most entrenched, there's a clear division between the kind of fan I am and the kind of fan who waits for "creator confirmation" before calling anything canon:
I am in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII fandom, and a great deal of modern fans are in the Final Fantasy VII Ultimania Series fandom.
Everyone engages with media differently, of course, and it's definitely nice to feel like you're "in the know" when it comes to things that aren't explicitly stated in a given piece of media. However, if you aren't willing to use simple math to confirm a specific important year in the timeline because the Ultimania didn't tell you to, you're in no place to correct people who did the bare minimum extrapolation necessary to figure out that 1950 plus 27 is 1977, or that 2007 minus 1977 is 30.

The fandom calls the horned figure the Antler Queen but such name doesn't exist inside the show, as far as I know. It's either Queen or Leader. The costume designer called the outfit Oracle, if I remember correctly.
Anyways. Lottie was thrust in that position position by Misty (and Mari) without wanting it, she chose Natalie (because "it" doesn't exist, it's just them kids, thank you Shauna) and Nat is happy about this - I don't know why -. There's also the detail that Shauna wants or wanted to be Leader. Why do these teenagers want this position, I wonder? Is it because they think they can actually do something good with it and keep the group alive? Or do they just want the others to do as they say? Was Natalie's expression of happiness genuine when she was appointed Leader and everyone bowed and offered her courtesies? Because after the horrendous events that just happened (because some didn't want to eat Lottie and Travis and Javi wanted to keep Natalie safe) I don't see how being looked up to by these lost and traumatized bunch is any consolation... Is there something I'm missing? Something I'm not seeing? And why does Shauna want the position of Leader? If she wants it because she's been constantly overshadowed by others (Jackie) and now she wants the spotlight, I get it I guess. But still, I don't see how anyone would be happy being Leader of this group. Why would anyone want to be?
After the revelation of Natalie Taissa's line in season 1 about how none of them would be alive if it wasn't for Natalie makes even more sense. Natalie wasn't just the hunter that brought them food in the wilderness, Travis did the same and the adult survivors aren't thanking him. But Natalie was also their first Leader.
Do I believe there's more than one "Antler Queen"? No, for now. It's been Lottie's mystical delirium, materialized with the appointment of Natalie - who is now dead - and there's the question of if Shauna still wants the title. I can believe teen Shauna wants it, but I don't see adult Shauna wanting it tbh.
And why the fuck is Lottie so obsessed with Shauna's children?! First it was the baby boy that couldn't make it. Now she's talking of how powerful Callie is?? I used to have a soft spot for Lottie. But after episode 8 I'm having trouble feeling bad for her. And I don't like to feel this way because Lottie is (or was, I don't know anymore) a good person at heart and is just as broken as everyone else. Yellowjackets has no bad guy, no main villain (although trauma very well could be the villain of this show), but I'm having trouble not blaming Lottie for a lot of things, and Misty, including Natalie's death. Misty executed Natalie, ironically, trying to save her from being shot by Lisa. But Lottie, who is the person I assume Lisa was trying to help, could have stopped Lisa from shooting. Why didn't Lottie stop Lisa? Lisa listens to her. Part of me thinks Lottie did nothing because she just wanted someone to die. They were going to kill Shauna just because, or Lisa would kill someone with the gun. Either way Lottie wanted someone to die. She would also drink the poison herself if she had to. I know there's people who hate the action of sending Lottie to a mental institution. But what else can be done with her? After episode 8 I get the impression she is too far gone in this wilderness delirium. She is a danger to others and to herself. For a moment I thought that Van would come up with the idea of killing Lottie as in an act of mercy or something when she didn't agree with Taissa about calling the Psychiatric squad. But apparently that wasn't the case.
I hope Misty goes to jail next season for Natalie's murder. But I'm guessing Walter won't let that happen. He's been a real one for Misty and I actually like that Misty has someone who, so far, actually likes her for her. She isn't gonna find that anywhere else. I know Misty didn't kill Natalie on purpose, she wanted to help and as always whenever Misty tries to help she ends up making things worse. But Natalie didn't deserve this and I'm being bias because I love Natalie... Damn, it's gonna be so hard to look at Sophie Thatcher from here on out till the show's end.
I know how fucked up it is for an adult to set a cabin full of teenagers on fire. This show is just full to the rim of fucked up shit. But still I can see why Coach did it. He has no control whatsoever over these teenagers, the teens decide to eat each other to survive, the teens let their own die so the rest can eat, the teens do all the crazy stuff but also the teens are the ones who get the slight minimum of food to keep surviving. What is Coach doing? Hallucinating his boyfriend, or ex-boyfriend, and being terrorized at the kids being ok about eating human meat to survive. Maybe he blames himself for having taught them to hunt and bleeding animals to eat? I don't know. I have the feeling season 3 could be Coach Ben's last. Now that there's no shelter maybe Natalie will tell everyone of the place Coach wanted to take her to survive the winter (I thought it was such a dick move to offer just Natalie to go with him, but again I can see why he did that then), they find Coach doing well in the cave and get mad at him for not taking everyone there, then they end up killing and eating him. I also could believe Coach Ben will be the first intentional kill of the Yellowjackets.
There's so much to unpack in this season finale. But one last thing I want to mention. Well, two last things:
I love, love Sophie Thatcher and Juliette Lewis performances as Natalie Scatorccio. Seeing them together in the plane scene got me. I just want Nat to be at peace. I'm greatly missing Juliette Lewis on the show.
The begenning of the episode with Zombie by The Cranberries (a song I listened to frequently in my early teenage years) was incredible. The scene was too powerful. Natalie going ahead on her own to be greeted by Travis at the cabin. The girls carring Javi's body like dead pray back to eat. I was in pain for Nat, Travis, and Javi. A truly heartbreaking episode from start to finish.

Writing Family Web Daily: Day 11
“Donnie, stop,” Leo interrupted. “I’m not mad.”
Donnie looked back at him, still curled against the wall.
“You’re not?”
“Why would you think I’m mad?”
“Because you’re…” not checking on me? Not asking me a million questions? Not motherhennign me to death? “…Over there.”
“Oh, that’s not…that’s not because of you,” Leo murmured, ducking his head down slowly until he was half hidden behind his knees.
Donnie wasn’t the best at reading faces, he wasn’t even that good at reading his brothers’. But there was a few expressions Leo made that Donnie just knew what they meant. Leo was making one then, recognizable even with his face half hidden.
Leo didn’t make this particular face often, the last time being when they were ten and he had tried to drag a resisting Donnie down the stairs, which ended with a bad scrape across Donnie’s shell.
Leo thought he hurt him and was blaiming himself for it.
Donnie should have noticed immediately. But the room was dark and he was still so exhausted.
