Look before the War Within starts and Anduin gets to work on his Shadowlands gotten trauma and development I need to dunk on him (affectionate) for a quick second okay?
So in Before the Storm he has this line:
"Her [Sylavnas's] eyes narrowed. Anduin knew she understood the lesson of this day's tragic events. She was not universally loved among her people. He was. She ruled with an iron fist. He ruled with compassion. (pg347)"
Which comparatively sure, fair. Sylvanas has just put a hard, murderous, stop to Calia's first attempt at girlbossing and killed about half the desolate council. Before the Storm is what it needed to be for BfA and beyond.
But I would like to point out that earlier in the book we have this:
"Anduin had been informed that negative sentiment was not limited to his advisors. Guards and Shaw's people had reported that there was muttering in some of the taverns and on the streets. The guards had been instructed to interrupt such conversations if they verged on sedition or grew violent. (pg 248)"
Baby boy that is not universally beloved and ruling with compassion. Lol. Lmao even.
I've scrawled all in my copy with little notes and I have a messy word document with rewrite ideas for this 6 (!) year old book. I am excited to see what we have going on under Silithus. In the end WoW is a video game that needs to keep selling and making new storylines.

Gonna put myself out here for a hot minute to remind everyone that the runner of a poll or little event on tumblr is not responsible for the replies/posts of everyone else in the fandom, nor do they have the power to stop people from reacting in any which way in the notes of their post without turning off reblogs and shutting down the entire thing full stop. I think we can all agree on that? They are not a discord mod, or the fandom's babysitter. Tumblr is the Wild West and by god none of us are the sheriff.
That's all ok keep on keeping everyone
#I think everyone can understand the wariness that comes with suddenly holding a giant megaphone?#and also the inbox is not your political confessional. for like.. the last time#if you have a point to make reblog or make your own post#Mac mumbles#this is getting sidetracked but#some of this stuff really does just look like ask bait. stop it#don't throw it onto someone else to suddenly have to reply or take the heat for. go off anon at least#you may not be intentionally mean about it but it's not nice. if you have a stupid point to make use your own blog to make it don't leech#off someone else's blog and watch them navigate the replies of an opinion You Made#if you're not sure how to figure out what sets a trap for a Tumblr user: stating an argumentative opinion or ranting about others behaviour#usually causes shit for the one answering the ask#because now their hands are tied and no matter how they respond they are probably gonna get shit#obviously this is less of a personal rant because as we have established today: I am the swing a bat at the hornets nest mutual#but yeah. be nice. don't send political discourse on anon into peoples inboxes if they haven't already brought up the topic.#its kinda a dick move. why not make your own post? oh its because you want Their Platform to boost your opinion? get out#if you wanted to have a conversation about it then dm them or send it off anon so they can reply properly#**privately#if you're worried you might get heat for it then ding ding! that is also a dick move! you know its a heated topic#and yet you hath brought it forth onto another blog so that They may be the one to carry the conversation#ugh sorry for the long rant this is just Such a pet peeve of mine#again I don't care much as a receiver but watching others get stuck in it is like... mrs anon sir. that was not nice#bad fandom etiquette etc etc#this goes double if its a generally positive or neutral blog. be annoyed on your own time

I think it's soooo funny when I'm reading a DRRR fic and Shizuo is portrayed as some shining model of goodness as if he's not besties with an underground doctor, a headless transporter, is a fricking debt collector who was part of a colour gang and literally has Izaya's fucking phone number. His only morals are no killing and no kidnapping what are yall smoking and where can I get it

some of the ways y'all talk about buddie on here is. sure something.
i've seen so many people cry "queerbait" and similar sentiments and i'm just????? we must be watching different shows or something. 911 has a beautiful, canon queer relationship in the main cast, so we know they're willing to show them and write them in a realistic, beautiful way. and idk some of y'all are so up in arms about buddie not being canon yet but like....you do realize that part of storytelling is anticipation from the audience, right?? you do realize that storylines that are rushed to please the fans are never on the same level as storylines that take their time and bloom on their own, right???? you do understand what a slow-burn is, right???????
idk i just. i think as a whole the fandom needs to take a step back and trust that the writers know what they're doing with this. we're not here to fight and complain about this show, we're here to enjoy the ride. maybe we should let ourselves do that.

okay so like. even before s2 started airing, i never really thought "little miss perfect" fit amity all that well. like, it fit her well enough to go on a playlist for her but not to be like, her theme song, if that makes any sense?
but i did think some of the memes were fun and enjoyable anyway
but i kinda wonder exactly how much it affected fanon. like i feel like there was at least A LITTLE BIT of people tweaking their interpretation of amity's character to better fit the song, even if that meant straying further from canon. i wonder how strongly it influences certain ideas in the fandom like "amity had a perfect facade with no cracks before luz" and "amity is deeply ashamed of her crush on luz". or even some specific theories like "the blight parents are homophobic/homophobia exists on the boiling isles" and "amity is adopted. because she has brown hair."

might be swinging a bat at a hornets nest here but
specifically in denver at least ive noticed a lot of leftists are some of the most deeply unpleasant people ive ever met
like sure you know the basics of marxism but have you ever engaged with contemporary theory and have u learned how to explain those concepts without filling everything with jargon? or have u read like, anything else? have u considered reading a book and not incoorporating it into ur life is meaningless and no i dont mean just slapping ACAB on ur profile header
do you like... talk to your neighbors? like in a meaningful way? do u go out of your way to help people even if it's something like helping a neighbor shovel snow from their driveway or offering to go pick up their groceries?
i just have a met a lot of people who are some of the most bitter, condescending ppl who act Like That under the guise of being The Ones Who Are Right and are deeply unpleasant to well-intentioned ppl who might not be Radical Enough even tho the way to develop ur politics is thru... learning? and yeah 'go read a book' is fine if ur like me with a postgrad education, but what if the well-intentioned person is like, your dad who works 60-70 hours a week and never finished high school and possibly has a learning disability. u think im gonna tell my dad to go read early 20th century sociological theory???
idk i just think you can have All The Right Opinions but if you aren't, you know, nice, it really doesn't mean a lot lol
if u read this and got mad at me i need u to light a nice candle and have a little cup of tea or something and then not send me an ask about it

I feel like I'm swinging at a hornet's nest here but I love it when "my trauma made me funny" types are like "no one laughs at my jokes about my trauma because it makes them uncomfortable 🤪" if no one laughs at your jokes you might just not be funny

Hi! I am new to the term "transandrophobia" and I've been trying to understand it, do you have any good sources for learning more about it? From what I've gleaned so far it just sounds like "trans men experience a unique kind of bigotry" which makes me insanely confused as to why people I follow and generally agree with are arguing against it so passionately. Am I missing something or is this just another case of terf brain rot leaking into really weird places?
hi! thank you for asking, im happy to try and explain. you're correct, transandrophobia is just a term to describe the unique forms of oppression transmasculine people face. some examples are discrimination when trying to access reproductive care, forced detransitioning by pregnancy, the myriad of ways transmasc poc are treated differently (hi thats me), just to name a few.
to my understanding there's a lot of pushback because people believe anyone that identifies as a man or masculine can't experience bigotry because of being a man, because all men benefit from the patriarchy. i find this to be vastly oversimplified, in fact i would say that the majority of men don't benefit from the patriarchy 100% of the time. ask any men of color, or disabled men, or trans men. there are unique experiences we have that are inextricably linked to maleness, and people don't like to acknowledge that.
i think another part of it, and i might be swinging a bat at a hornets nest with this one, but people perceive women, including trans women, as being the Most Oppressed group, so when transmascs try to talk about our specific struggles (not even saying they're inherently worse, just speaking about them in general) people think we're saying that *we* have it the worst and no one else is as oppressed as us, which is total bullshit. it isn't a contest, no one is claiming one is worse than the other, we just want to be able to talk about our unique struggles that are more specific than general transphobia.
i also think a large part of the issue is that for some reason lots of people believe the transphobia transmascs experience is inherently easier than what transfemmes face, which again is bullshit. there's plenty of statistics about how prevalent violence against us is, it just often flies under the radar because the victims are misgendered posthumously. there's been a recent conversation about how transmascs aren't the main targets of terfs and are basically just collateral which. i don't have the time or energy to fully explain why thats a ridiculous and lowkey actually dangerous belief.
anyways, this ended up being a bit long so i hope i was able to answer your question. @genderkoolaid has a lot of resources in hir transandrophobia tag that can also help!

this might be swinging a bat at a hornet's nest but. every once in a while i see a snide post abt how "ppl only write characters as trans masc to be bottoms in piv sex!" and i'm just wondering where this overabundance of cis ppl writing trans hcs is. i am 31 and i have been in one fandom where a trans hc was more popular than the cis assumption. there are issues in fandom when it comes to which characters get hc'd as trans and why (young, white, thin, etc), but i simply do not believe there's a burdensome amount of cis ppl making art and fic of trans mascs as bottoms and nor do i think it's harmful. like as a trans masc who has written more than my fair share of trans masc nsfw fic i find it insulting and infantilizing that there's this assumption we could not possibly be writing and drawing our own desires into fic and art.

🔥 X-men/Krakoa?
Allright let me swing at the hornet's nest here a bit: Krakoa was wasted on the X-Men, not the other way around.
Krakoa was, however problematic and shitty and complicated it might have been even from day one, was onto something enough to generate the intense interest and instant fandom it did, and it's biggest problem wasn't with the forgiving of unrepentant monstrous villains (because that door got blown open forever ago), or the no-humans-allowed policy, or the genocide in Latin America, or the pod people resurrection that took the bite out of every mutant genocide and death past and future, or that the entire premise was built around them trusting the funi haha eugenicist Nazi to build their paradise and let himself be stopped later, or that it kept revolving around the petty courtly intrigues of the arch assholes in charge with only like, two writers capable of propping up this to make it worth reading about. The central problem didn't have as much to do with the fact that the newfound central focus on shadowy detached superhumans huffing their supremacist royalist fumes 24/7 is precisely why nobody likes the Inhumans and especially why nobody liked them as a replacement to the X-Men, and you can't cobble a story out of Magneto/Emma Frost/Mr Sinister mean girl one-liners and hot takes even if that's all the fans want (yes, the X-Men are bastards and so is everyone in the MU, how cutting and insightful and powerful they are yes very impressed, but an Epic Bastard Moments compilation is still not a story). I don't even think it can be entirely blamed on the fact that they had the X-Men speedrun through the 14 rules of fascism as the opening act to a larger story only to decide that actually, we don't need that larger story after all, thanks Hickster but we can just take it from here and keep Stage One as is, everyone's gonna be cool with the cult shit if it still feels like it's going anywhere other than back to the school, we can keep this up forever now! This isn't even a bit, I don't think these things were the biggest cause of death for Krakoa even if they all were there.
I think the biggest problem is that, no matter how many cool or great characters they add to their ranks or what turns into epic pulp sci-fi bombast they take, the X-Men might just be foundationally, irreperably broken as a concept, smothered under the weight of the selling metaphor that just gets more dated and problematic and easier to tear holes into with every passing year, and Krakoa ultimately just elevated all these problems to center stage. There was never going to be a world where Magneto says something as full of shit as "There has never been a mutant war and we've never conquered or stolen land or made slaves and that's why we're better, by the way we're going to be your new gods now" with a straight-face and didn't have that proven immediately wrong (not counting all the people in the Council who absolutely did do all of those things). Krakoa couldn't be both the terra nullius dream clubhouse and the "queer separatist utopia" people desperately craved and a cult backed up by genocide run by self-destructive warmongering hypocrites and a next step in evolution and the headquarters to a superhero team you need to tell monthly exploding punchy stories about and a place that was going to live forever and lead us into the better future and a house of cards waiting to be toppled. It didn't have a future because quite frankly, the mutants don't have a future.
The mutants are, even after all this time, still a half-baked idea of people entirely defined by their oppression, by their death and torture and the hollow space where you're expected to insert your own marginalized traits to identify with instead of much of anything akin to how real marginalized identities are formed and developed and solidified over time. Pretending that the mutants can subsist forever on past shoddy worldbuilding and dated, vague parallels just gets more embarassing over time. It's not an issue individually cool comics or characters are going to fundamentally fix. Krakoa, to it's credit, was some way towards trying to define the mutants past their oppression, but they barely had a language or a flag, and even these attempts were smothered under the Claremontian shadow that's been choking this franchise forever and by the inability of The Big Two to truly hand the reins to anyone other than the same stables of white dudes who always get the final say in everything. Krakoa was Going Somewhere up until it wasn't, and the promise alone breathed a whole new life into the X-books, we really did get some very good comics out of this era, but it was always going to end the way it ended.
Actually scrap all of that, my hot take is, not for racist reasons or anything, but we should destroy the X-Men and replace them with big cool robots that can make us safe forever. Has anyone tried that already?

btw this might be me swinging a bat at a hornets nest but like. absolutely none of my disappointment from the tl finale comes from ship baiting or any relationships that didn’t happen (though to be clear, i think the tedbecca fake outs were meanspirited and served no narrative purpose - in noted contrast to the season's earlier jamiekeeley fakeouts, for example, which were explicitly there to demonstrate jamie's growth + maturity)
tedpendant is a really fun concept for me, and i LOVE the characterisation + thematic potential there!
but as someone who personally resonated with a lot of ted’s struggles, the idea that ted could leave richmond so… seamlessly, for lack of a better word, really doesn’t sit right with me. the thesis of the shows entire first season - assuming it can be said to have only one - was about how everyone needs the love and support of a community, whether that comes in the flavour of someone who hypes u tf up or someone who will relentlessly call u on ur shit (or, as happened quite frequently, both!).
rebecca, roy, jamie are the clearest examples as the characters with the most screentime: they were all deeply isolated and disconnected from the people around them, and that was making them miserable. the connections they made with the team, the vulnerability they finally allowed themselves to express (the ghost banishing ceremony comes to mind!), and them going on to want *more* out of their life are what made their arcs about *progression* rather than *regression*. without that clear theme of compassion + community inspiring positive growth in everyone who encounters it, there is, frankly, no season one.
my personal favourite scene from season one comes right after michelle walks away from ted, when they’ve agreed to get divorced. ted sits down on the bench looking gutted, and a little shell shocked - and beard sits down with him. hands him the drink, and they sit there together. silent, but together. to me, that scene is an implicit promise from the episode, to the audience: ‘it’ll be okay. it’s going to be hard, but ted isn’t alone, and his friends won’t leave him behind.’
it also makes it clear to the audience that ted isn’t the saintly-giver-of-grace who needs nothing in return, as one might assume on first brush, but rather that he’s Also struggling with his own shit (as is everyone, always, in real life!) and he has something he needs from the people around him too.
and looking at the text of s3, and the conclusion to his arc in the finale, i just don’t believe that he got it. he wasn’t just sad that he was leaving (which would be understandable!), he was completely closed off. unresponsive to the people around him reaching out, borderline confused as to why they were trying so hard!
(side note, while i completely respect the read of ted and trents last interaction being rather rude + ooc on ted’s part, i personally read a different motive into it. for me, it was more like… he didn’t understand where trents enthusiasm was coming from? like, he read that as trent being too invested in what other people think of him, and responded in a way that he hoped would emphasise that ted doesn’t *need* to laugh at everything trent wrote, bc trent Already Knows that he’s done something really cool and kickass, and he shouldn’t value anyone else’s reactions above that. basically, based on his demeanour in the episode, i genuinely don’t think it would’ve even occurred to him that trent was more invested in HIS reaction than he would’ve been with anyone else.)
again, looking purely at the text, the show had already established that ted has really strong depressive + avoidant tendencies, as well as panic attacks (largely triggered by his fear of not being ‘good enough’ in various roles, ie: a father). we saw one area he was able to calm HIMSELF abt these fears (worry for henry, which is a Hell of a choice considering the ending…), but in literally every other heightened moment, he had to rely on his support system to help him make the choices that he WANTED to make, rather than ones inspired by avoidance and fear (ie: confronting michelle abt jake, talking to his mum abt why she was visiting + his dads death).
and to be clear, this is a GOOD THING! we’re not supposed to go through life alone, no matter how bad OR well we’re doing. rebecca and keeleys friendship isn’t worth less for all the scenes where they’re both in good places. if anything, the opposite is true - it’s lovely that they both have someone who want to celebrate the achievements in their life!
and fuck it, we’re sure as hell not supposed to go through life with exactly one (1) person whom we expect to fulfill ALL of our emotional needs at all times either! like, im sure i don’t need to labour my point here, but tying everything to one (1) person in ur life doesn’t make u any less isolated than if u were going it completely alone, whether it’s a family member, a friend, or a partner. i won’t pretend to know the first thing abt what it’s like to be a parent, but i don’t think it’s unreasonable to say that no parent would be at their best if they had absolutely no support/camaraderie/general love provided to them from Anyone other than their child.
so when ted is SPECIFICALLY shown to be in a bad place, over and over again (did he come to terms w his fear to be close to henry overnight???????), and then removed from his community? of COURSE the audience is left feeling unsettled, and like the rug has been pulled out from under them. there was no time in this finale dedicated to how ted would still be in contact with anyone from richmond. no promises of visits, or phone calls - fuck, nothing about emails!! according to the text, we might as well assume this is a clean break (and the maybe-dream-sequence does Fuck All to assure us otherwise. if ted doesn’t go to beards wedding, what WOULD he go to????). and since the show has ALSO completely failed to give us even an IMPLICATION of who/what ted’s support system would be in kansas, there’s… a reasonable argument to be made that this is It for ted. that, after two seasons doing NOTHING but attesting otherwise, the audience is supposed to suddenly believe that ted can (and SHOULD!) pull himself up by his bootstraps, and cope entirely on his own.
that, to me, is a betrayal of the show’s premise. we were promised a show about how, no matter how dark things may get, none of the characters would be left to struggle alone. and then they ended the show with ted alone.
i don’t know. i guess if i had to give this post a tldr; if anyone has any gen fic/meta/Literally Anything in the pipeline, i would absolutely love to be tagged/directed towards it. i’ll be endeavouring to write something myself, as well, but it might take a while before i can return to my WIP, lol.
#this is the most measured version of this post i was capable of fghjskdjhgfdgjhsfd#the least measured one is just the aromantic flag with the ‘we are going to beat u to death’ meme overlaid#look ik this is hardly impartial wrt very small + insular communities like nuclear families#but its fucking impossible to go into media analysis and not bring Anything from ur real life in there w u#so im trying to forgive myself for being a little hashtag Vulnerable + Opinionated on main#in the spirit of what this show could’ve been lol#if not here then where etc etc#Ted lasso spoilers#Ted lasso meta#Ted lasso critical#also just to be clear here im being dead serious abt that last point#im spiritually doing the jamie run to demonstrate to u all how badly i want gen shit#please. p l e a s e .#okay wait last ramble here but. this is also why the lack of information we got on trent was so crushing to me#like ur telling me this man went through the incredibly painful + harrowing process of breaking out of his (comfortable! safe) shell +#cynical journalist persona. came out to someone VERY important in his life. and has done nothing but face the music wrt acknowleding#his past mistakes + endeavouring to be better and kinder. and we never get to know if he has ANY support through all that? at all?#is he dating? what's his family situation like? does he have full custody? any friends from work? any friends period?????#like i can should must and will die on the beard + roy + higgins + colins are trents best friends hill but#its like the premise of the show stopped mattering just in time for him to be left in a legitimately depressing limbo#like 'yes everyone needs love + support bc life is rlly hard. but we're tired of making a show abt that so This Is All Ur Getting#+ screw anyone's personal life that u didn't already see in s1. You Know Enough.'#anyway i love u all this is a very silly show and im gonna go play t.o.t.k for a few hours o/ <3

Sisters best friend , but love of my life part 2 ( Jake “Hangman” Seresin X Reader)
What you need to know: It is not very nice of Phoenix to jump to conclusions that Jake has no idea how Y/N feels about him. It is also not very nice what Jake feels he has to do to set things right.
AN: I have some bad news... Part two might break your heart a little but do no worry I will put it back together  Also I am writing in the guy POV for the first time Im a little nerves about that. But go with me because I am so in love with how this turned out.
Part one and part three my sweets
There will be 3 more parts to this so just hold  on any hearts I have broken will be fixed ( that is a warning haha)
Tumblr media
As soon as I get to Phoenix I let her have it. “What on earth do you think you are doing?” I try to keep my voice down so Y/N doesn’t hear me.
I want to check over my shoulder to make sure she is in the barn. I know that if I look at her she’ll be worried about how angry my face looks.
“What did you tell her?” I let my hands rest on my hips.
“I just told her you carry her letters with you.” She was acting way too calm and I didn't like it. Phoenix was used to being in the face of danger, so I knew right now she was channeling that reserve. I raise my eyebrow at her. I know there is more.
She sighs, “I also told her to ask you about why.”
I swear I could see red. Years I have spent keeping Y/N just an arms length away was about to go out the  window. I want to see the fact that Phoenix thinks she is being a good friend. She thinks she is helping me out by pushing myself and Y/N together. What she doesn’t know is that she is swinging a bat at a hornets nest. I didn’t think I could regret my drunken night of telling Phoenix about Y/N anymore then I already did, but here we are.  I start to pace in front of her. I know Y/N will not jump to the conclusion that what Nat is trying to say is that I love her. Y/N is the type of person who will not jump to a happy ending. She will think of the reasonable first. To her, me wanting her the same way she wants me is not just unreasonable, it is unfathomable. I hate that I know that. I hate that I feel safe in the fact she will think nothing of it. But now, she will want to come to me for an answer anyway and I will have to come up with a lie to throw her off. I can’t tell her what letters I keep with me and I surely can’t tell her why. That would be my dead give away and Then she would know. I turn my body fully away from Phoenix, and look out over the farm.  Maybe an answer will hit me in the face if I just keep looking. I hear Nat shuffle her feet and then she spoke.
“That girl loves you, it is rude to have her think her love it just one sided.” I whip my head around to look her in the face.
Her face softens, and she almost looks sad. I want to tell her calmly why it has to be this way, but I can’t grasp the calm part of me right now.
“Trust me it is much easier being the person who thinks it is one sided, than being the one who knows it's not.” My voice bites out as I face her. “Stop acting like a detective who just put the pieces of the puzzle together. You think I didn’t see the hope in her eyes when she turned 18? Or again when she turned 20? You don’t think I knew she was thinking ‘this will be it. He might  finally do something’? It kills me!” Digging my boot in the ground does nothing to help release some of my frustration.
“Then do something about it, Hangman!” She pokes at my chest.
“I fucking can’t.” I seethe. She is poking a bear, she just doesn’t know it yet.
“Yes you can! What the hell is stopping you? Just tell her and go from there.” She throws her hands up in the air.
“This isn’t fear. This isn’t a scared man who doesn’t know how to commit to one person.  This is my life being narrated by a legal document. A document signed 100 years ago saying the Seversin family cannot marry someone from the Y/L/N  family. They did it so the farm would never split. If someone from my family marries someone from hers they forfeit their right to run the farm one day. Don’t you understand? This place is her life. This farm is her Top Gun.”
It finally sinks in and it stops her from pushing farther. She doesn’t move and the downcast look on her face tells me she understands the gravity of what she has done.
Drunk me seemed to have left this part out when I told her about Y/n. I don’t know how. That stupid rule has been on my brain since I was 24. Now I have my friend in front of me who is upset with herself.
From the way I act around them I don’t really blame her. A cocky man who doesn’t want to commit to one person, I can see how she got there. It is just in this small town of Texas, my home town, around that girl, that I am not that man. I know Phoenix was doing what she thought was best but you know what they say about good intentions: The road to hell is paved with them.
I slide my hands in my back pockets as I turn to walk back, nodding my head in the barn's direction telling Phoenix to follow. I was done talking about it. Now I have to figure out what I was going to do about it. Phoenix falls into step with me. When we get to the barn I let her walk in before me and I allow the door to shut behind us. The wind picks up making it shut much harder than I wanted it too. The sound alone makes Y/N head swing towards me. I know she is reading my face and picking up on the anger. She has always been good at reading me. I could breathe the wrong way and she would be onto me in a second. Her eyebrows raise asking me the question. I just shake my head in response.
“So, next on the tour I could show y’all the calving barn. It’s where all the baby cows are.” Kate said as she started to bounce on her feet again. She was always so happy. She is the most carefree of us all and it truly showed. She tows Bob by the arm to get him where he needed to go. Poor man looked like his eyes were going to pop out of his head. He just went with it with a small wince. Roster and I both were laughing at the interaction. Y/N was busy looking down at her watch and this gave me a moment to finally observe her. Her hat sat snugly on her head, she has her favorite striped shirt on, the blue one. Her cut off jeans allow me to see those strong legs of hers, tan from the summer sun down to her boot clad feet, with one tapping rhythmically on the barn floor. She does that when she gets focused, my heart squeezes at how well I know her.
She let out a sigh, I quickly looked away from her. “Well this is where I depart on the welcome home tour. I should go check fences.” She gives a wave then makes her way to her horse's stall.
I didn’t even have time to think before I spoke. “I will go with you.” Everyone turned to look at me. I just shrug my shoulders at them. “I’ve been in this barn my whole life. Plus this is me paying back Y/N for waking up early every morning to come help me.” I give Y/N a smile before I make my way to the tack room to gather her saddle.
As I walk through the door I hear Bob ask what her horse’s name is. I laugh in anticipation of the answer and she shoots me a look over her shoulder. That knowing look just makes my love for her grow.
“His name is Radish.” Y/N says with a smile. That could only be because she loves the question people ask next.
“You named your horse, Radish?” Roster looks puzzled but everyone else got the joke. Man she loves it when she can get someone to call him horseradish.
“Yes I did, you see the reddish tint he has that is why. Also,  because Jake said I wouldn’t do it.” She cuts her eyes at me as she laughs. I make my way to the tack room to gather all the things she needs. When I step out I see she has gotten Radish out so the others could pet him before we saddle him up.
“So this is your horse?” I don’t look at Bob as he asks the question. I move to step around him and throw the blanket on Radish’s back, having already set the saddle down at my feet.
Me and Y/N answer at the same time. “He is ours.” She is standing on the other side of the horse so I look down at her over his back. I love how her face lights up when she says that. This horse is the one thing that is just mine and hers. Growing up we were the only ones who took care of him. So many nights of just me and her in this barn brushing him down and talking about how to train him. It was just me and her. How it should be.
“He was Jake’s but I kind of took him. So we have share custody of him. He won’t let Jake ride him if I am around.”
“We learned that the hard way.”
“Don’t say “we”. I knew, but you just didn’t want to listen to me.” She rolls her eyes at me. She isn’t wrong but I just like saying we. I shake the thought away and finish tightening the saddle down.
“Fine, you can be right this time.” I give Radish a slap on the butt as I move to walk around to the side the others are on. “He is all set. I’ll walk y’all out and go grab Ranger.” I give Y/N’s shoulder a squeeze as I walk past her, with the others to the end of the barn.
“Be good to them Kate. No tricking the boys into getting on a bull.” She just gives me a toothy smile. One of her favorite things is talking people into bull riding. I have seen her do it too many times to not bring it up now. She just rolls her eyes as she takes hold of Bob's arm again and starts dragging him along. I want to be upset that she seems to have some kind of crush on him. Between him or Roster, I will say I am happy with Bob. I stand in the doorway of the barn and just watch them walk away. I know as soon as I go back in the barn Y/N is going to start asking questions. As much as I want to lie to her and just brush it off, I know with one look I will be done. Any lie I could come up with would be gone. I turn on my heels and take a deep breath. Here goes nothing.
I walk back in to see she has already put the tack on Ranger and has the leads for both horses in hand as she walks to the far end of the barn that leads out to  the field.
“You didn’t have to do that, I was coming back.” She turns her head slightly to give me a look then rolls her eyes as she continues to walk to the exit. We have always done this. She dresses my horse while I dress hers. It started when she was younger and didn’t know how. As she learned she would just get Ranger, doing the same as I did.
When I get to her, I reach to take the lead from her hands but she moves them away. Oh great we are doing this now. Just for fun I try one more time to take them from her. She just moves them farther away. She then takes both leads and ties them to a post by the doors. She faces me and no words need to be spoken as she places her hand on her hip and tilts her head to the side.
“What was Phoenix going on about?” She asks like what Phoenix said was a joke and I was about to set her straight. What she doesn’t know is that my answer will blow her life up and tear the relationship we have apart.
“Well, I don't know I wasn’t there.” I am trying just to brush it off.
“Jake, please work with me here.” She takes a step towards me. Panic rushes in and I can’t think.
“Then ask a question I can answer.” I sigh. “What letters do you carry with you?”
“Please don’t ask me that.”
“Why?”
Damn her stubbornness.
“Because I want to tell you the truth.”
“Then tell me the truth!” She exclaims.
“I can’t.”
“I’m not getting what the big deal is.” She’s getting frustrated with me, her mouth is doing that twitch.
“If I tell you, you’ll understand.”
She crosses her arms, waiting.
I run my hand down my face in defeat. “The letter in my cockpit is one of you describing the farm with a picture of a rooster crowing at the sun.”
“And the one in your jump suit?”
“It is the one when you were talking about your future. And your future husband. You drew a picture of two people holding hands.”
“You have 100s of letters, why those?”
“Y/N Please stop.”
“Tell me why Jake!” She demands.
“What good does knowing do?” I shrug.
“Please? I will beg.” She warns.
“You will never have to beg for anything from me. It has always been yours.” I say softly.
Please don’t make me tell you the truth. Please just let me lie to you.
She shakes her head. “Jake.”
“The one in the cockpit is where I go home too. The one in my jumpsuit is who I go home to.”
I have been keeping that to myself for so long, it feels like a weight has been lifted off my chest. It's only when I look up at her the weight finds me again. I can almost feel her brain spinning. Her face keeps shifting. She has this joy that takes over then confusion. She then starts pacing. It's the cutest thing I have ever seen. Every few seconds she turns to me to speak but says nothing, then goes back to her pacing. I could let her do this forever.
“So now what?” she finally turns to me. It is my turn to be confused.
“What do you mean now what?”
“We feel the same jake. So now what do we do?” Her brow wrinkles.
“We do nothing.”
“What the fuck, that can’t be your answer.”
“That is my answer.” I say firmly
“What? No. No that can’t be it. You can’t feel that way for me and want to do nothing.” She snaps.
“Don’t you ever think I want to do nothing about it.” I warn.
“Well here we are, Jake, you wanted to do nothing.” Her hands fall to her sides with her frustration.
“This isn’t what I want! We can’t do anything. Why do you think I haven't told you all this time?” I plead.
“Tell me this isn’t about the rule?” Her arms cross over her chest, and she pins me with a glare.
“It's not a rule, it's a contract! Signed by our families saying they will never marry and if they do, they forfeit their right to the farm. You want this place right?”
“How long have you known?” She demands.
“Since you were 18.” I mutter.
I didn’t see it coming but I felt it. The slap to my face was hard. I could feel the blood rushing to my face as I met her eyes again. She was full of anger now. Truth be told, I was okay with it. If she was mad at me, even if she hated me, maybe she wouldn’t want to be with me. She would keep this place. I wouldn’t have to spend my life being the one she loves and the one thing she regrets. She spins on her heels, takes the reins and rides off with Radish before I can say another word.

Ok Pathologic and Disco Elysium might both be really really depressing games but honestly I feel like that's pretty much where the narrative similarities end. Cause like. Both of them deal in themes of inevitable collapse and entrapment in fate but like DE has an underlying tone of hope and redemption. No ending in Patho is actually Good, all of them result in some kind of major loss. (Clara's ending isn't really "good" either, it just reinforces the status quo and perpetuates the cycle of destruction.) And no matter how well you play, you can't stop the deaths of the hundreds of random citizens. DE is much smaller-scale, so while you can't ever stop the Pale from spreading or affect the wider political landscape, the game very much tells you that yes, your actions matter. You help the citizens of Martinaise and your presence at the tribunal at least delays a massacre of innocent people. And most of all, if you play it right, Harry CAN become a better person. Even if he goes back to his previous life, it's Possible for him to be better and be happy somewhere down the road. Like the narrative of Patho deals in large-scale tragedy, and while DE has a lot of large-scale lore the story itself is about a very sad man trying to make a small part of the world slightly better. You know?
Also, I think DE is less of a tragedy in that the characters do have choices. Nothing is presented as entirely inevitable even when it technically is. In Patho they are bound to their fates both literally by the powers that be, and by the narrative structure. There isn't really compromise between the factions. The healers can not choose between different endings, they can only choose to allow one of the other healers to enact their own. Even in P2 where Artemy's whole thing is being torn between the town and the Kin, he still has to choose only one. They can not coexist. Whereas in DE, identity and political alignment are a lot more fluid. A major figure in the (arguably socialist) worker's union is a massive fascist. The Deserter is a communist but also vindictive and nihilist, lacking the community and empathy required to actually make things better. Kim is a centrist, but at the end of the day cares most about protecting people, not the will of the state he works for. And of course, Harry can ideologically align himself with communism completely, but he's still A Fucking Cop. Self-proclaimed belief and tangible function within the system are two separate things. That's not to say Pathologic lacks nuance of course, just that the two games handle these themes differently. Which is to be expected, as again Patho is more wide-scale apocalyptic, thus its characters must stand firm as representations of their factions. It's a big ol' game of chess with big ol' players. Group interest instead of individual motives. The characters of course do have Traits and Motives, but I wouldn't call it a character study in the way DE is with Harry. Zoomed in, DE has more room to explore the contradictions in its characters' belief systems.
All this to say that while these games appeal to a similar audience and certainly have a lot of superficial thematic similarities, I don't think the narratives or the framing of those themes are really all that comparable. Also sorry to say this, swinging a bat at a hornet's nest I know, but DE actually has yaoi and Patho does not. Artemy is not fucking that stupid twink, but that old man is definitely fucking Harry Du Bois god bless 💖

This is probably swinging a bit of a bat at a hornet’s nest on this website, but I wonder if the rise of purity culture in fandom, aside from other influencing factors, could have something to do with the fact that so many young fans tend to consume primarily media intended for children.
After all, children’s media is usually at least in part focused on teaching life lessons and providing kids with role-models. That’s why you’ll rarely find an anti-hero protagonist in children’s media. In fact, “protagonist” seems to have sort of been conflated with “good guy.”
Of course, not all media follows these standards. First and foremost, you have to remember that characters aren’t people, they’re literary devices, and they serve a variety of purposes. Some might be role models. Some might be anti-role-models. But honestly, sometimes they literally serve to show “what happens if you put a funny little guy in situations.”
More under the cut.
See, the fiction vs reality debate is interesting in this at. We’re humans, and humans are curious things. Sometimes, humans get morbidly curious and speculate about what might happen in some fucked up situation to some fucked up people. They don’t want any of it to happen in real life, but they still want to have an idea. Literally just because we’re curious.
So what do you do? You make a fucked up little man and put him in situations. He’s not meant to be a good person— honestly good and bad don’t matter here because the story’s not about morals but about cause and effect. Characters can show bad things, they can’t do bad things.
Because humans are curious and like thinking about “what ifs,” sometimes people get really attached to these funny little horrible guys. They like seeing them go through situations and imagining how they’d react. Purely because it’s a fun sequence of cause and effect and way easier than trying to enact it in real life. Now, obviously, stories are influenced by creators’ personal biases, but then that just becomes another dimension to the puzzle. That’s how you get character archetypes who end up telling completely different stories. Sometimes, people really like the way one particular creator has figured out a cause and effect sequence for their archetype. So, people end up with blorbos. Funny little imaginary guys, good and bad, who they just take an incredible, scientific joy in watching. Humans have always been doing science.
And that’s where purity culture comes in. Because, with purity culture, these characters are treated like they’re humans with accountability for their actions. Even though they haven’t hurt any real people. It is, in fact, impossible for a fictional character to hurt people. Even if they are treated as a role model— it’s still the fault of the person who decided to view them that way.
Because characters aren’t intrinsically role models. Even protagonists.
Children’s show creators often make their protagonists to be role models for kids. And in that case, when that’s the stated intent, it’s perfectly reasonable to judge that character’s morals. But you’re not judging a person, any more than evaluating a school textbook for accuracy and correct information would be evaluating a person. You’re evaluating the literary device that is a character. Of course, if you primarily consume children’s media, where many characters are role models and teaching moral lessons is often an intent, what happens when you read something with a different premise? What happens when you read, for example, speculative fiction about what goes on in the mind of a horrific dictator?
If you’re used to judging the worth of characters on a moral rubric, then of course you’ll apply that rubric to protagonists of the new media you read. So naturally, you’ll start thinking that, of course the protagonist of this story is a terrible guy and a horrible role model. What about the people who like him? Well, they must look up to him and agree with him in some way, especially if they’re rooting for him. So of course their morals are in question.
Except, they’re not rooting for him because they agree with him. They’re just rooting for him because they’re invested in seeing where his fucked up actions take him and how it ends up.
Same with relationships. Someone who ships a “problematic” pairing might have absolutely no desire to see any relationship like that in real life, ever. But regardless, it’s a very scientifically, morbidly interesting thing that they can’t take their eyes away from.
Anyway, genre awareness is a great thing to have when consuming media. A romance story isn’t about “what makes a good relationship,” it’s about “what makes an interesting and complex relationship to think about.” A horror story isn’t “what should you do in a fucked up situation,” it’s more of “what might people with these kinds of personalities do instinctively in fucked up situations.”
Genre awareness is cool. You don’t need to think about how good of a role model or representation a character is, so much as you need to think about “what is the purpose of this character in this genre and narrative, and how well are they fulfilling that purpose?”

I'm probably swinging a bat at a hornet's nest here, but honestly? I am not surprised by Germany's stance on this genocide. For years and years, I've had to hear from other westerners how they've "changed" and "learned from their past" and "they're so nice" but no lol. I'm a lily white Eastern European who went to Germany for a WEEK and the amount of xenophobia I've experienced was insane. I was so upset, because I was excited to go to Germany and I'm pretty much fluent in German too. After that experience I got bitter and I got tired of their "we accept anyone!!!" facade. They deem other white people as something less, I can't imagine how they view Palestinians.
And a disclaimer: I know EE has its fair share of problems, I'm very aware of that and I don't agree with the politics here, because fuck we're going even more backwards. It's genuinely upsetting. I'm just sharing my experience with Germans, and it was not a pleasant one. So, seeing Germany's reaction is not a surprise to ME, unlike a lot of westerners who were trying to gaslight me for years that Germany is oh so progressive and accepting.
Yeah, I definitely agree with this - Germany really has this public image of having thoroughly grappled with their guilt and remorse over the Holocaust to the point of being upheld as a shining beacon of how a country should reckon with genocide in its history and how it has learned from its own history, but the reality is that sure, they might teach the Holocaust in schools and have certain related laws, but it feels very surface level and their actions don't reflect their words - like, not just in how Germany is backing genocide in Palestine, but the way they are targeting Jewish people for their anti-genocide actions and framing it as fighting antisemitism, and the rise of the far right, down to doing Nazi salutes.
I remember watching a documentary that also pointed out that after the very public Nuremberg Trials, most Nazi officials didn't get more than slaps on the wrist like a jail sentence of a few years before being released and getting to return to their regular lives, and ofc we know the rest of the West was complicit in rehabilitating Nazis through Operation Paperclip, NASA, NATO, etc. - so yeah, they did not actually get held accountable the way Western history likes to brag like they did.
So yeah, Germany might make a big deal about being remorseful about the Holocaust and caring about antisemitism, but it's ultimately a facade bc like every other Western country, they only care about their own imperial interests, but will dress it up as some kind of fight for justice and liberation against their inherently evil enemies.
