in my mind dean was always supposed to get older and become the new bobby. like ok you're a hunter, maybe a little new to the scene and still figuring things out. and you're tracking down a werewolf, easy case. except some things don't line up quite right and now you're thinking it might not actually be a werewolf. so you ask around a hunter's bar and they all say the same thing. go to this one bunker in the middle of nowhere in kansas
and you're like sure what the hell. you're stumped anyway, might as well check it out. maybe it's a weapons storehouse or something. but then you get there and there's a doorbell and a bee-shaped welcome mat out front and you're starting to think you've got the wrong place. the door swings open and there's this middle aged guy with a robe and batman pyjama bottoms. and he laughs at the look on your face and tells you to come in, he doesn't bite. not since he got that vampire cure, anyway. you're not sure what to make of that last part but he winks at you when he says it so you figure he's joking. maybe.
he gives great advice about hunting everything under the sun and if you stick around long enough he'll go on and on about how he saved the world at least five times. ok sure. you don't want to be rude so you just sit there and sip your coffee politely while he talks about some guy called chuck and how much of a bitch he is. and another guy who's aged a little more gracefully comes padding down the hallway in a metallica t-shirt and rolls his eyes. has he told you about tvland yet? ('i was just getting to that part!')
if you go to the basement you'll find shotguns filled with salt, wooden stakes, holy water, and demon-killing bullets for sale. and if you're lucky the witch who sells hex bags might be around. low-grade curses only, of course. you better leave the powerful stuff to the professionals. and she'll get in trouble if she gives you anything stronger, not that she can't be persuaded. a girl's gotta make a living after all and she's always encouraged eager new witches. it's worked out pretty well for her so far. and then a guy you swear is twice your height will raise an eyebrow at her and insist she only sell the weaker hex bags, please. you don't need any more witches in your coven, rowena. you've got plenty
pagan god giving you trouble? there's a man who swings by every once in a while who knows how to deal with those. give him some candy or a fun magic relic and he might help you out. it depends. he's a little picky about dishing out advice and he likes to play favorites. and if you've got a demon problem they can give you the number of a guy who swears up and down that he used to be the king of hell. but you've seen him walking around with a purse-sized terrier tucked under his arm and a dozen more following him so you're not really sure if you believe him
idk i like to think that dean got to grow old and retire. that doesn't mean he stops helping people, it just means he hangs up his coat and becomes an old man who rambles on and on about 'back in my day' and makes a dent in his leather armchair. there's a foosball table where the dungeon used to be and sam complains about beer bottles being everywhere and it becomes a safe haven for anyone still fighting the good fight. it's just that for dean and the rest of team free will the fight is over. they're done hunting now

another beautiful thing about essek thelyss is that #1 favor the m9 ask him for is teleportation and essek is simply so bad at it. he grinds them into the side of a mountain multiple times. he never knows where they're going. time is his specialty but space can fuck right off

Poked at sugar baby!AU, but skipped ahead to stuff in later chapters so arguably have not made progress toward anything that could be published soon. 😂
---
"I wish to retain your services," Seto paused, as if for dramatic effect and Katsuya wouldn't put it beyond him to do that. "Exclusively."
Mentally, Katsuya mapped out the possible paths in the upcoming conversation. Seto was not the first to offer such an arrangement, nor would he likely be the last. Don't get Katsuya wrong. It was deeply and supremely flattering for Kaiba Seto, of all people, to want to cover him exclusively. But it took more than mere flattery to entice Katsuya to jump ship.
Even if there was little in recent memory more gratifying than taking the executive apart on his fingers and dick.
Katsuya locked eyes with the other man. "I signed an employment contract."
Seto's pretty lips pursed, but he wasn't deterred. "I'll pay out for the remainder of your contract, including any penalty fees."
Humming, Katsuya crossed to where Seto sat, stiff and straight-backed, and lowered himself onto the man's empty lap. Impossibly, Seto tensed even more. But only for a second, until his hands found purchase on Katsuya's hips. Bracing the back of the armchair, Katsuya leaned in over the other man, and they almost seemed to melt as one into the cushion.
"Y'know, other people have made me the same offer," he said conversationally, settling more comfortably atop the executive's thighs. He could get used to this seating arrangement. "But they often underestimate how much it'd really cost. That won't be an issue for you, Kaiba-sama."
Seto's fingers dug into his waist. "That's a yes, then."
"It's not a no," he conceded.
The furrow between Seto's brows deepened, as did his frown. Katsuya felt the pull to press his mouth to Seto's lips next but he resisted.
The apparently lackluster response didn't deter Seto, though. The man gripped his hips as if he already owned him and rattled off the perks without missing a beat. "I'm offering you a six-month contract, possible renewal pending what happens. Your salary will be equivalent to twice your current rate. I will also cover your rent and other living expenses such as utilities, gym membership, and groceries. You will get a monthly stipend on top of that to deal with the rest."
Contrary to what people thought, Katsuya was excellent at math. His mind reeled as he crunched the numbers. He swallowed. "That's... That's a very generous offer."
God, it was so good it was dizzying. Even if Seto didn't renew the contract, Katsuya would be set for a while. He wouldn't have to return to hosting immediately. Hell, he might even save enough seed money to start his own business.
"I'm paying for you to be on call 24/7," said Seto matter-of-factly. "You'll see no other clients and work no other job."
Eyes hooded, Katsuya flashed a sultry grin. "Making giving you my dick whenever and wherever you want it my only job."

(ACID THEORY)
Tumblr media
He got deep-fried
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In my personal version of Acid Theory, the battery acid is a catalyst rather than a reactant; it simply sped up a process that was already happening. Spamton's "puppetification" was a supernatural consequence of his connection with his benefactor on the phone. Before the acid incident, he had already been experiencing progressively worse symptoms. He had peeled off so much dead skin from his hands that the plastic growing underneath was fully visible. Spamton's decaying body and inability to make profit without his benefactors strings drove him towards the NEO body, where the swatchlings witnessed him kneel before it, praying for hours at a time. Due to Spamton's trespassing in the basement, inability to pay rent, and visually declining mental state, Queen saw the acid river as both a way to get rid of him and maybe get him to relax. After all, the acid isn't supposed to dangerous and the river is only a few feet deep. No one bore witness to the disfigured amalgamation of plastic and flesh crawling from the acid river and its trash filled shores. Ball joints strung with tendons, enamel teeth growing from a yellowing plastic face, wet glassy eyes, amputated feet molded into fake shoes—a breathing, living puppet. Swatch assumed that Spamton somehow transferred his soul to a new body—the alternative was both horrifying and surely impossible.

(This is a remake of my first acid theory drawing (not on my tumblr) from a little over 2 years ago. Both were done with the same paper and markers.)

Trapped in new roles; SPN finale 15x20
There are a couple of ways you can take the finale, ranging from face-value to throwaway to the psy-pop-Sybil darkest of the dark. In this take, we're going to examine it as a trapped narrative, that here's the Home Bakery: the actual Cas, Dean, Sam & Jack.
The rest is set-dressing. It’s filled to brim with specter of the false-god-writers, agents Kripke and Singer, "miming" what they think the plot and finale should be. They are satirical and glib, missing their hearts and forever married to the Original Ending Idea and unwilling to grow. Uncanny valley- types.
Here, they’ve taken a family that is more than blood, (with Bobby Singer-style) dynamics, and they’ve force-fitted it to a nuclear family symbolism in order to kill it. The vibrant village community has shrunken to become pre-packaged American dream.
///
This is the Crowther family (sounds like crowder), of which only the father and youngest son are named aloud (Lyle and Brady). This family is being killed to appeal to your heartstrings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. Castiel falls; the first line of defense
Castiel is this black-and-tan-sentry of the door. This character has slightly Jack-and-Dean-esque style in terms of style (shoes and dark shirt + jacket) but he visually dies as Castiel did in 12x23. The writers break the shield (heavenly!protector) and move into the symbolic hearth of the home. They overwork him and drain him of all vitality and happiness before he goes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Dean falls next; the second line of defense
This is the character they symbolically kill, but leave (bodily) intact. The one whose tongue they cut out. (As in Proverbs 10:31, "The mouth of the righteous flows with wisdom, But the perverted tongue will be cut out." Ergo, Dean is no longer righteous. He is corrupted. Broken.) The reaction shot calls to mind the mated reaction shot to the 12x23 scene above. Sam and Dean BOTH have a reaction to Castiel being felled, but visually this character is more similar to Dean.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This could, of course, call to mind Kelly or Mary or even Sam, but her duster is long and gray, like a MoL robe. Below: "Lyle?" / "Cas? Where's Jack?" (Bonus: green eyes)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Goodbye, Dean.)
3. Sam in despair, bunkering down with another family member, still not safe
This one is easy to see. There's long hair, and Sam is wearing the same gray hoodie in the exact same episode, perhaps the most clear visual cue of all. The child also wears an orange jacket, which is the deep amber of endurance and one of Sam’s key colors.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Jack is last family member, clothed in the garb of Heaven (deep blood + blue sky)
The last family member's got the yellow balloon and blond hair, symbolic rising sun/son (Jack). He wears slightly Chuck & human!Cas manner of dress, signaling the humanity trapped inside the divinity. Ergo, the lineage of Chuck->Cas->Jack. (The blue is Heaven, the deep red represents royalty. (Bright red is blood and sacrifice.) Ergo, “royalty of Heaven.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(First two images, Mikael.)
So, in the end, Sam and Jack were visually "saved," within the narrative.
But were they actually? They are both tied to destinies that feel empty and going-through-the-motions, like they're stranded on the island inside the childhood bedroom.
Symbolically, the trapped narrative almost seems to pick up where 15x18 Despair left off...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...except it continues the poofing of the loved ones, rippling outwards from Cas, before then moving to Dean, to Sam, and finally to Jack, watching as his remaining family member is dragged out from under the bed and ripped away from him.
///
It seems to suggest that, even if Cas and Dean hadn't, as Billie said, "been in the wrong place," that there was really no hope to start with. As Dean lamented, "we never should've left Sam n' Jack," like Amelia Novak lamented, "I never should've left her (Claire)." (The failed protectors’ refrain in SPN is, “I never should’ve left them!”)
But no matter where Dean and Cas were, they were never going to save Sam and Jack.
The writers were always going to win.
The ghostly specter of this episode is unsettling and unreal, oddly picturesque and "Charming Acres" -styled, like this shot reminiscent of the Monet-style painting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's a false world.
("What did you do to Dean? What did you do to Sam?")
Maybe I killed them? Or...maybe you just don't recognize them. Maybe I gave them new roles when they refused to play the right ones. Who knows, Becky? All I can tell you for sure is that I won.
Charitably, maybe the fight ain't over. I offer this to Becky's "No one even mentions Cas!" It's from Ouroboros:
Castiel: It's an odd and glaring omission. Sam: No. It's our shot....yeah. I-It's risky. But I-I think it's probably our best play.
Come on, Sammy. Break out of it.

[Image description: A digital painting from the shoulders up of Estinien Wyrmblood from Final Fantasy XIV. He has pale skin with patches of reddish scales, particularly around his eyes, on his neck, and on the tips of his elf-ears, one of which is slightly torn, as well as vein-like scarring on his cheeks below his eyes. He has long, untied silver hair and pale eyebrows and eyelashes. The irises of his eyes are dark red on top and light blue on the bottom, and the rims of his eyes are very dark and tired-looking. He has thin lips, slightly smirking, with a fang sticking out on the side. He is wearing a casual brown-and-white vest. The background is a solid royal blue and the piece has an overall lavender tint. End ID.]

I know I talk a lot about issues within inpatient psychiatry and how they affect the patients (and this should frankly be the #1 priority), but I think how these issues affect the staff is important too. This paper goes into moral injury amongst psychiatric hospital staff in depth, and is the only systemic analysis I've been able to find on the topic.
Some quotes from staff members that I found particularly striking:
"The medicalisation approach of care for psychiatric patients has overlooked the principles of “care” in the context of nursing, and consequently the emphasis seems to have shifted more towards safety management. . ."
"What stops me from acting was I am part of a team . . . if I intervene in these situations I’m interfering with primary nursing, and I think I would be seen as splitting the team by taking the side of the patient."
"When I expressed my concern over what seemed like a blatant error in diagnosis, my instructor . . . who I held in really high esteem . . . just said “Docs don’t misdiagnose . . . there’s no misdiagnosing here,” and I was thinking, “Are you kidding me? Like, isn’t that against everything we’ve ever learned about critical thinking and looking at the specifics and questioning. . .?”"
"It’s not to be taken lightly when you put your hands on somebody. It’s wrong really. It’s like the opposite of therapeutic touch."
"I run to another ward when we hear the assault alarm and find a half-naked woman lying on the floor. As I understand it, the patient has “moved into top gear” and will be given an injection. . .. I’m distressed about the woman lying there half naked (why didn’t anyone think of covering her with a blanket?)"
Most of what the article discussed in the "implications for practice" section is about giving psychiatric healthcare workers more avenues to report immoral acts, along with trainings on how to deal with moral injury, but I have another takeaway. Both patients and staff are traumatized by this system. Why aren't we fundamentally changing something?
(Additionally, this system is perfect for burning out staff that have strong ethics and leaving the abusive staff to run things. So there's issues on both a systemic and individual level.)
