I started writing fanfic about 4 years ago and I mainly wrote boyxboy then I started writing ...that straight stuff... But I still write boyxboy! I've only written fluffy girlxgirl but I'm always open to expanding my craft!

I'm into kpop and khiphop. My main groups consist of nct (all units), ateez, monsta x, and cignature (I like and listen to WAYYYY more. Ask and I shall tell all). Khiphop wise, my main peeps are Coogie, Changmo, Dean, and JEY (I also listen to WAYYYY more. Just ask about it).

My ult bias is Haechan (how could he not be? Like have y'all heard his voice?)

I also listen to jpop and p-pop. (Y'all know them boys Alamat? Or Psychic Fever? 👀)

I'm a big tv/movie watcher. I watch just about any and everything. I'm into marvel, dc, teen wolf, degrassi, etc. Trust me if it has a good plot or a hot cast (or both) I've already seen it or I plan to watch it. (Please ask me about Gen V. #MarieJordan ❤❤). I'm into WWE too! Aew as well (not as much but I'm tryna fix that #JonMoxleyIsMyHusband)

Little girls who want to be Lauren Faust one day? Who have dreams of making Turning Red 67 or My Little Pony 89? Who are passionate about storyboarding and tweening???

Those same girls??

The same girls who feel like the medium they like, doesn’t like them back?

Totally not because women aren’t taken seriously anywhere they go. Totally not proven by the overwhelming majority of shounen, mecha battle, isekai, harem cartoons aimed towards 9-12 year old boys. And when pandered to, girls get hamfisted “pretty in pink, I hate other girls!” media. Surely not.

Not because of the mass cancellation of girl aimed shows. Not because of “haha pony baby show!! You like pony baby show? You dipshit dirty diaper baby!!” Couldn’t be.

The same girls who get made fun of for liking boy bands, or not liking trucks? That’s your excuse to not treat “girly” animation the same as you would with Digimon?

“Bu-bu-bu-but how will we ever make these girls watch this show?? There’s n-no innuendoed b-boobies ☹️”

OH PLEASE!

The notion that “girls are more mature and grow up quicker than boys, therefore can be sidelined” is so harmful, it further excludes women from passionate conversations and valuable inputs. It makes girls look immature for LIKING PICTURES ON A SCREEN.

(It’s also real world sexist and predatory (which isn’t quite my point right now but you see what I’m saying. It all ties in…))

How dare you, Amy Friedman. Cartoons will never be just for tween boys. How pathetic and sad is that?

Coming from an exec at one of the largest cartoon providers in the U.S., “once little girls reach the age of 13, they have graduated from…*checks spark notes, because I’m grown, miserable, and unhappy in life because I’ve graduated from lines on code, obviously* …

I think one of my personal main problems with YA shows that aren't primarily black casts is that they always throw the one black character (because there's usually only one main and maybe one supporting character active or alive at the same time) with

1. A character of a different race that treats them badly/will cheat on them (Bonnie from TVD ~ even though she and Jeremy were cute for a while)(Toni and Cheryl from Riverdale)(Kat with Jamie from Instant Star)(Also, Kwest with Sadie from Instant Star)

2. With the only other black character on the show (obviously where they're going with Bianca and the mayor's son in Wednesday)(Bonnie with that warlock's son in TVD)(The brother in South of Nowhere)(Majority of the black characters from Degrassi)

3. A good character that's leaving/gonna die soon (Bonnie with Enzo in TVD)(Honestly most of Bonnie's love interests)

4. Unrequited love or just single (I can't remember Skillz from OTH having a love interest)(Pete with Chloe from Smallville)(Lisa in Saved By The Bell)

Or 5. They don't have main black characters to begin with (like Gossip Girl or majority of the seasons of Teen Wolf or the really old popular shows like OTH (I mentioned Skills but he's in and out), 7th Heaven, majority of Boy Meets World (where I'd put Shawn and Angela under 1 because, although I love them, he was shitty to her), etc.

Or maybe those are just the ones I watched, 😂

My ships are almost never endgame bc I usually prefer the less popular ships.

I seriously love ships that are more compatible & similar to each other (and wholesome & sweet to each other), than opposites attract or a ship that’s unrequited until the other person “finally” changes their mind. I usually find those ships toxic (not judging anyone for shipping them though) and people find my favorite ships boring lol.

Like this is my list compared to the popular (and usually endgame) ships:

-Stalia over Stydia

-Cordueva over Jafael

-Matlingsworth over Zaya

-Callie/Aaron over Brallie (not endgame thankfully bc they’re siblings) and currently hating the popular but politically opposite Callie/Jamie. Although Aaron also got kind of toxic during the AJ love triangle, so I’m hoping she finds someone new in Good Trouble.

And the show is still going but:

-Zimon over Zoemax

Any time a character (usually a guy) gets angry at his friend (usually a girl) for not being with him or for dating someone else, I immediately stop shipping them. It feels possessive, not romantic.

I don’t like the “dogged nice guy” trope, so that’s why I only like friends to lovers when the feelings are mutual, not when one person is pining for years.

Again I respect all shippers and understand wanting more excitement in a ship, but I notice a pattern of which ships I prefer and which ones I can’t stand 💀

To add to this, this is why I don’t automatically ship friends to lovers. It depends on the situation. If it’s mutual pining, I ship it, or if one person has a crush but accepts rejection and staya friends, then I’ll ship it (or enjoy it as a friendship). But if the person with a crush responds to rejection with anger (which Zig, Brandon, Max, and Rafael have all done imo), I get whiny “friend zone” vibes and won’t ship it lol. Stiles I think was a good example of handling rejection, but I enjoyed their friendship and loved Stalia a lot so it was hard for me to appreciate stydia.

My Top TV Show Female Characters

I made a male version of this that some people actually read (thanks!!) So I thought it's time to make my female version! I'm sure there's more that I adore, but these are the ones that immediately came to mind. *In no particular order*

Brooke Davis (One Tree Hill)

A literal queen that will forever be special to me. If there's one character I will always defend no matter what, it's Brooke. Sophia Bush brought so much to this character and it truly shows throughout all 9 seasons. The emotions she was able to get out of me just by shedding a single tear, oof. Brooke Davis had one of the best character developments on One Tree Hill (alongside king Nathan Royal Scott). She forever deserved better and I'm so happy she ultimately got her happy ending.

Haley James Scott (One Tree Hill)

Keeping with the OTH theme, here's another queen that I love dearly. Bethany Joy Lenz was one of the best actors on this show and she brought so much to this character that I'm sure was only initially supposed to be your typical best friend to the main character. Haley James Scott was more than that. She is a wonderful wife (Naley forever my #1 otp and simply iconic) and mother. Not only that, but she's talented and funny af. Her humor is so underrated especially during her pregnancies lol. Not only that but never mess with her family cause she will quite literally fuck you up (*cough* see Rachel Gatina) 💀

Blair Waldorf (Gossip Girl)

1/2 the reason why I even bothered with Gossip Girl to begin with. Takeaway that God awful relationship with the wannabe Batman voiced man, she is a literal queen that deserved better!! Leighton Meester's acting so underrated it annoys me that her career didn't skyrocket after this (there's still time though 🙏). Blair had her flaws, but was shown to be quite the good person despite everything. She is not only intelligent, but she's witty af and I love every bit of her sass. If only she had ended up with someone on her level mentally and spiritually.

Manny Santos (Degrassi TNG)

A whole ass trendsetting queen!!! Manuela Santos walked so that so many other bad ass tv women could run. The very first time I watched this show I instantly fell in love with her. She was honestly a good ass friend that dealt with so much shit that she didn't deserve. The abortion storyline was simply great because I'm almost positive girls watching the show felt safe knowing they had options when it comes to unplanned pregnancies. Her style? Immaculate. Her ability to change a once bad boy to an actual good guy? Iconic. Love her forever.

Stephanie Tanner (Full House)

This show was the very first sitcom I fell in love with as a little girl. I remember loving Stephanie. To the point where I wanted to join dance classes to be like her lol. I always was more invested in her storylines and I thought she was extremely relatable. Her catchphrases >>>> and the episode where she drove the car into the kitchen? Forever iconic. I haven't seen enough of Fuller House to give an opinion, but I'm sure she was just as iconic on there.

Jen Lindley (Dawsons Creek)

My sweet precious muffin. My cinnamon apple. Jen brought so much to this show. An iconic friendship (her and Jack 😭😍), amazing character development, and a lovable personality. I truly love her so much and I cannot believe the way her story ended. She deserved so much more. She was a beautiful person inside and out and Michelle Williams did such an amazing job. Especially when she was the youngest amongst the cast.

Lydia Martin (Teen Wolf)

My favorite banshee ❤ I seem to love characters with amazing character developments because here's yet another character that had amazing development. Lydia literally went from typical mean girl to an actual badass superhero. She was so real and so complicated (in a good way). I loved the depth to her character and forever happy they didn't keep her as the mean girl with no personality. Lydia Martin is a powerful woman. Also, her and Stiles forever have my heart.

Lois Lane (Smallville)

I love this show and the minute she came on I personally believe the show got better. Lois and Clark are legendary especially on Smallville. I know a lot of people preferred Lana and at first I was all Lana/Clark. But once Lois came on, I was like Lana who? Lois was more interesting and had better chemistry with Clark imo. I think my love for this character stems mainly from Erica Durance. She brought such a light and lovable vibe to this Lois.

April Kepner (Grey's Anatomy)

A strong ass woman. She faced so much hardship, but never ever gave up. Like the amount of shit this woman had to deal with?? It's always the characters that I love that have to deal with a lot and quite often never get the happiness they deserve. I'm so happy they brought her back and gave her a better and more proper ending with Jackson aka who she deserved to be endgame with. April could be quite neurotic to the point where it got annoying. But I still loved her and her flaws. She was extremely relatable. Also let's take a second to recognize how amazing Sarah Drew is.....the shooting episode and scene with the shooter??? ICONIC.

Tia and Tamera (Sister Sister)

Another sitcom I absolutely adore. Tia and Tamera are forever iconic queens in the show and in real life. I'll admit, Tia was favorite as a kid. I resonated with her more, but during my last rewatch as an adult I enjoyed the two of them and now I can't really choose a favorite. These two are my childhood ❤

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? not all of them. i do try to keep up on them, especially on longer stories when there's been significant wait times in between chapters, or when a reader is asking a question or is unclear on something. and especially when someone writes a really indepth comment/review, i like to respond to those and talk about motivations and character growth.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? I've written a number of fics that either had suicide or major character death, so i'm not sure if one outranks the other in terms of most angsty... hmm... i remember "be still and know that I'm with you (be still and know that I am here)" and "light a match, burn the world to ash (I will watch it die, and hold your hand as I fly)" both got some pretty intense reactions when they were posted. And "It's Your Song That Sets Me Free (I Sing It While I Feel I Can't Go On)" was basically just angst from beginning to end. buuuuut, i think i'll say "so you think you can tell (heaven from hell" was, only because there's a build up of everything going so right, only to pivot at the end, so it feels very bittersweet.

Do you write crossovers? If so what’s the craziest one you’ve written? i loooooove crossovers. i find writing in the marvel fandom makes things quite easy, but also smallville. as long as i can find a common thread, i enjoy finding a way to overlap two shows. i'll say the hardest one to write was "ruby red slippers (unavailable in her size)." I'm not sure why, but i found writing each personality together just felt strange. i liked the idea behind the story, but i definitely remember feeling like i was really forcing myself to keep going, like something just didn't fit right.

Have you ever received hate on a fic? oh, definitely. you cannot please everyone, it's impossible. for the most part, hate comes and i either argue back, take the criticism for what it's worth, or just ignore it when it's baseless. i think the hate that bothered me the most was a homophobic PM someone sent me re: "you know I will adore you ('til eternity)," on FFnet. i actually went and searched it up. they've since blocked me so i can't read our whole thread back and forth. but i did put part of it on tumblr so i could rant on it a bit, so you can see that here.

Do you write smut? If so what kind? ha. yes. depending on the story, it can be really detailed or really flowery. it depends on the ship, the plot, and how graphic i feel like being. i've definitely become more comfortable over the years with my writing. that said, i think everybody likes something different. i once had a reviewer tell me a sex scene was too much, just too intense. it was a stefan/caroline story and to be fair, that entire oneshot was just them fucking, lol, but it is what it is. to each their own.

Have you ever had a fic stolen? Multiple times.

Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes! for the record, i am always happy to have my stories translated and shared. i just like having a link sent to me and to be credited.

What’s your all time favorite ship? i have a list of OTPs, because interests change and as shows come and go, my love for a ship can be shelved for a while before it pops back up at random. currently, i can't get enough of buck/eddie from 9-1-1. and, historically, chloe/oliver (smallville) and felicity/oliver (arrow) have been two of my top OTPs. but i think i'd have to go with bonnie/damon. they had all the potential and the show dropped the ball by not exploring it. at the same time, that's kind of a blessing, because i don't trust those writers to properly explore what they had without eventually destroying it for the likes of de/ena. it means a treasure trove for writing where it could have gone and all the what if's.

What’s a WIP that you want to finish, but don’t think you ever will? the intention is always to finish. but given how i feel about allison mack and how that impacts my feelings re: chloe sullivan, pretty much anything with her as a main character is not something i see myself returning to.

What are your writing strengths? What are your writing weaknesses? i'm putting these together because my strength is my weakness. i love to write. when i get an idea, i go all in and i will skip eating and sleeping to just write write write. but i also eventually hit a wall and i get so many ideas that i hyperfocus on one until the steam is gone and then i hyperfocus on the next one to maintain that need to keep writing, accidentally leaving the last story in the dust for entirely too long. i also have clinical depression that comes and goes, which hasn't been super great mixed with covid and isolation, so more often recently, i find myself overly exhausted and despite wanting to write, can rarely get motivated to do so. so, pre-covid, wrote so much i left entirely too many stories dangling. during covid, i've just been reading and struggling to get myself focused enough to do what i love.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? i appreciate the authenticity when possible, but i've recently been reading more about how native speakers of other languages feel when a) their language is butchered by google translate, or b) it's just not genuine in terms of how bilingual speakers act or speak.

What was the first fandom you’ve written for? it was smallville, but i remember adopting it out to someone else because i wasn't going to finish it. so if you look at my ffnet, the first fandom i wrote for appears to be x-men: the movie, but i remember writing a chloe/oliver story prior to that.

What’s your favorite fic that you’ve written? i have a lot. i mean, on ffnet, i have 576 stories, many of which were transferred over to ao3, with a lot of oneshots and drabbles getting joined together into collections. so there's a ton to pick from that span a 14-ish year timeline.

"you know I will adore you ('til eternity)" and "let me break (the walls that surround me)" hold a special place in my heart.

honestly, each story is important in its own way. there are bits and pieces of each that i love. every time i write something new it feels like my favorite. my best. and then a new idea comes along. there are scenes i've written that i loved more than the whole of what they became. lines that stand out that are almost too good to be a part of the larger picture.

one of my all time favorite passages i've written was bonnie's thoughts on damon and herself in 'if you love me (let me go)":

He is far from perfect. He is a novel of red, corrective ink. He is frayed pages and torn binding. His life, his choices, his mistakes leave lasting effects on everyone he meets.

She is a lifeboat with a hole in it. An anchor that drowns in the sea while everyone else remains steady above. She is both the calm and the storm, and while she screams that she will not be tamed, she cries. Bittersweet tears that go unnoticed and uncared about.

there are other stories, other pieces of dialogue, that i've been proud of. that make me laugh when i re-read them. that make me cry. and i love them. there are others that make me wilt and cringe and regret. it's a process. love and pride and growth, all bound together.

Similar to when I came up with my headcanon name for Polly’s little sibling, I’ve come up with some headcanon names for the Wolfpack, since the devs seem hellbent on giving everyone in the game names except them :).

I intend to use these names whenever I write a fic with them in it, and everyone else is completely free to use these names too! I’ll also include my reasoning for their names.

Mick Howl

Mick is the leader of the Wolfpack, the one up front with the human sprite.

Mick’s name comes from Mick McAllister, the jock bully antagonist from the movie version of Teen Wolf, which is also where Scott gets his first name from.

Archibald “Archie” Knott

Archibald’s name is the closest we have to a canon name. It’s implied to be one of their names in the IDENTITY ending, focusing on Zoe’s identity as a pseudo-transgender girl. When the Wolfpack show up, she likened her feeling of dissassociation and disatisfaction with her old identity to when the Woflpack used to be individual wolves with individual names, and one of them mentions the name Archibald.

For the bully/bigot motif I wanted to keep with the Wolfpack’s names, I coincidentally found out about Archibald Bunker from the old sitcom All in the Family. His character was largely a conservative and a bigot.

Also, Archibald “Archie” Andrews from Riverdale is a jock.

Billy Knott (formerly Biff)

Biff’s name comes from Biff Tannen, the misogynist and bully antagonist from the Back to the Future series.

Billy’s name comes from Billy Hargrove, the bully from Stranger Things.

Owen Knott

Owen’s name was the most worrisome to find, as I wanted an O-name that fit the theme I was going for. Luckily, I managed to find Owen Milligan from Degrassi, a homophobic jock (whose homophobia was later changed/retconned when the show gave him a gay younger brother).

As you can probably tell, the three Knotts (the three wolves always behind the leader) are also named for A/B/O (Alpha, Beta, and Omega) from the Omegaverse concept. Knott is, like Scott’s surname Howl, meant to be both extremely simple, not very deep, but like the Wolfpack, lewd and vulgar.

Also, there’s a one-off Gym event where Scott mentions having some younger brothers (more than two, at least), and no sisters were shown. In case I or anyone else ever want to use them and need names:

Blake Howl

Grady Howl

Tucker Howl

All three of their names come from Will Blake and Grady Tucker, the two main characters of the Goosebumps book The Werewolf of Fever Swamp. I wanted to reference children’s fiction for them, since they’re kids.

And as a bonus, I like to call Grandma Howl Ruby, after Ruby/Red Riding Hood the werewolf from Once Upon a Time, both because I really like that show and because I felt an old, classic fairy tale reference fit an old person like her (and Ruby itself sounds like a grandma name).

APRIL PICKS!

And we’re back with new picks for the month!! Man, this has been some strange times we’re living in. I saw a post that said March felt like 300 days, while April feels like 3. I could not agree more. I’ve watched a lot this month, which isn’t a shocker due to our current circumstances. There’s a pretty big range, so there might be something here that you can check out during quarantine.

Here come the spoilers!

THE SOCIETY

I’m going to start with my latest watch from Netflix, The Society. Wow. I really enjoyed this one. Going into it I knew it would be like a Twilight Zone meets Lord of the Flies show, but there was so much unexpected stuff that occurred. Much like Degrassi the Next Generation, they went there. The students from New Ham, Connecticut go off on a field trip, but the buses don’t get too far due to the storm. This forces them back into town only (maybe) a couple hours from when they left. No one is home when they get back. No adults, kids, or others who were not on the school trip. The town is theirs and there is no way out. At first it’s all partying, but things take a dark turn fast and the teens must come up with laws for there to be some sort of order in this new world if they want to survive and find a way back to their real home. The 10 episodes go by really fast. It leaves a nice cliffhanger for season 2 (which is supposed to be in the works, but I don’t know if Corona affected that at all). This show definitely contains a lot of surprising twists including one very early on that is hard to predict. If you have watched this show previously or are interested in giving it a shot know one important thing.

This is the BEST character on the show.

I have not met one person who doesn’t love Grizz. He is the greatest. (The fan love for him really reminds me of the love for Stiles in Teen Wolf.)

DC’S TITANS- Season 2

At the start of April, I started the second season of Titans. As someone who does not have the DC streaming service I have to wait till the seasons are accessible on DVD. I watched the first season back in December and loved it, so I couldn’t wait to watch season 2. I was excited to see all the characters they were adding to the team. As someone who LOVES superheroes, but gets most of their knowledge through watching TV and movies rather than the comics, I went in not knowing a lot, which made it even more exciting. I would say my only main issue with this season was the staggering of plots. Because there were so many characters to follow and so much going on there were a lot of times when I was excited to start the next episode (because the previous one always ended on the BEST cliffhangers) only to have the episode involve a completely different story-line. While Deathstroke was the main villain for the season, sprinkling in CADMUS and finishing off Raven’s dad at the start felt like a lot for me. Most of the side conflicts added up to involving Slade, but looking back (because I did watch this at the beginning of April) it often felt like a lot in the moment. Some of the moments that were my favorite were finally getting the Nightwing reveal, seeing Bruce and Dick interact, being at Titans tower, hearing Hank sing and all of Connor. I think he was my favorite addition to the show. (I could be biased because I’m a Superman fan.) I’m upset with the ending and they better find a way to reverse it!! I would also like to see more of the team together next season because I really missed that too.

On a lighter note....

NAILED IT!

This is the PERFECT show for the crazy times we are in. It takes your mind off the repetitive news and is a great stress reliever, plus it is super funny and you will find yourself laughing uncontrollable. Maybe more in some episodes than others. Nailed it is the baking game show for people who strive to be better bakers in the kitchen, but are struggling when it comes to appearance (or taste...or both). In the half hour show there are two tasks for the three contestants to perform in order for a chance at the Nailed It trophy and $10,000. They are both often very difficult, with the second creation much harder than the first. Watching the contestants is hilarious as well as their reactions to baking and not having any clue what to do sometimes. I also love the judges. Nicole Byer is too funny and Jacques Torres is one of my new favorite people.

Plus Wes is just beautiful and I loved when Nicole called him the human form of Simba from the Lion King.

Continuing on with more comedy...

I know of several people who quote John Mulaney’s comedy specials on the regular, plus his gifs are EVERYWHERE. So it was about time I watched his specials and what better time than right now when I can use all the laughs I can get. I watched The Come Back Kid and New in Town and was laughing all the way through. If you’re already familiar with his stand-up you can enjoy some of these moments again below. If you aren’t then I HIGHLY suggest you check them out on Netflix or by simply YouTube-ing some of his best moments. (My computer cannot stop putting them in my suggested now.)

Returning to some of my past favorites this month....

(Some of these should not come as a shocker)

ZOEY’S EXTRAORDINARY PLAYLIST

One of my February Picks is back (not that it ever really left). Zoey’s is the show that I can’t stop talking about and even if this past Sunday’s episode (not the one airing tonight because I obviously haven’t watched it yet-while he’s been bothering me I can’t wait to hear Max’s rendition of ‘Bye, Bye, Bye’) gave me issues because everyone was blowing up at each other and there were times I wanted to shout at the TV, I would still suggest this show to anyone. This dramedy has so much going on from captivating (and sometimes heartbreaking) plots, to realistic and lovable characters and songs you will quickly want to add to your personal playlist. It’s honestly just a feel good show that usually puts me in such a great mood (again, despite last week’s...) With only a few more to this season I cannot wait to see what happens next!! NANCY DREW

The CW retelling of Nancy Drew is in the top 2 of shows that I currently cannot stop talking about. It’s still a little shocking to me that I have grown to like Nancy Drew SO MUCH. If you told me that at the start of the season I would have been like ‘really?’ But as this first season has progressed I really fell in love with the show and the characters. While we ended on an earlier cliffhanger than was intended it was still an AWESOME one that has left me with so many questions. I am so happy this show was renewed and I cannot wait till they can start filming the second season. Because I need more of these kinds of moments:

I’m pretty sure I ended my last post this way too. But come on these two are the cutest and deserve to be endgame!

I DIDN’T DO IT

I am SO HAPPY that this show is now on Disney Plus. I have talked about this show since it got canceled from Disney Channel far too soon (much like many of their great shows on that channel). But at least they had gotten 2 seasons and both are now available to watch on the streaming service as much as you’d like. (I think I already made it up to episode 12). In my personal opinion season 2 is stronger than season 1 mainly because it doesn’t follow the classic structure of the “I didn’t do it” episode. What I mean by this is starting the episode out with some sort of hi-jinks and having the 5 best friends exclaim they “didn’t do it” or this isn’t how they thought things would go. Then we flashback to events either earlier in the day or week, etc, leading up to the first scene’s events. This style can get very repetitious, but with funny plots and likable characters certain episodes work better than others. However, by season 2 this structure was gone completely and I think the show strongly benefited from it. I truly believe this group of friends felt like a teenage “Friends” sitcom. They had a hang out at a smoothie cafe, two of them were siblings (here twins) and each member of the group resembled a character from the classic NBC show. They even had the two that felt like Ross and Rachel like each other romantically. Who knows where the show would have gone if it wasn’t cancelled. And Last But Not Least...

WORLD ON FIRE

The most recent show I’ve started watching is currently airing on PBS after previously airing on the BBC. This drama throws us into the beginnings of WWII as we follow several characters from different parts of the globe, from England to Germany and Poland. I’m really loving the diverse cast and seeing through the eyes of so many characters during this turning point of history. While I have only watched 2 episodes so far, I already feel very invested in each of their lives and cannot wait to see what happens next. Already so many twists and turns have occurred in such a short amount of time. The episodes go by really fast and will have you thinking a lot after. If you are a fan of a lot of other Masterpiece’s Classics I would highly suggest checking it out.

Anon who asked. If I had to guess why things kinda went awry with Dominoes, it would be that the stakes legitimately are life-threatening and life-ruining, rather than the intended entertaining teen drama, I guess? Yuusaku's done realistic (sans superpowers) harm to basically every aspect of his son's life, the kind of harm that's pretty much permanent and all you can do is live with the wounds and hope they turn to scar tissue.

(Cont.) So I think the reason things are different than you intended is that it's hard to reconcile the tone shift between teen drama and this very horrible level of abuse, and because Yuusaku's position with Shinichi's teen friends, this seems to me to unintentionally color the teen soap opera drama in the eyes of readers by making the Irregulars complicit in this actual realistic abuse. And then suddenly everything's very serious - is what I think happened, at least.

(Cont.) So basically, I think that if it weren't for the influence the character of Kudo Yuusaku has on the context of the teen characters' drama and how they're seen by readers, I suspect the reaction would have been closer to that of an AU teen soap opera with super powers. One surprise kinda caused the others, I think - Yuusaku was very disliked and that had ramifications for the rest of the cast.

I think you have a great point! But I’m going to have to disagree with you on that first point, about the stakes being different… either, I think, you aren’t super familiar with the genre I’m talking about, or maybe I just wasn’t super clear. When I said old teen dramas, I meant old teen dramas, not the Riverdale or Teen Wolf BS people associate with the term now. I mean the shows like Degrassi or Veronica Mars where in a single episode, a character can and often does go through far more life-ruining events than the entirety of Part 1 combined—the shows with gratuitous rape, cheating, and physical abuse, not to mention the drugging and waking up somewhere confused and scared with no idea what was done to you the night before. The genre I’m talking about tackled some rough shit back in the day (not always well or gracefully, but it certainly wasn’t afraid of going too far), with abuse by parents/guardians being one of the most predominant and common themes. I think Dominoes is actually pretty tame in that regard compared to its original predecessors. Like c’mon, Yuusaku hasn’t locked Shinichi up in an institution or set him up as a drug addict or anything 🤣

Like you said, maybe that makes the abuse feel more grounded and realistic, in which case, that means I should have gone farther and needed to go more extreme...

Nevertheless, it doesn’t seem to feel more tame to its readers, which is the part that surprised me. Maybe its the realism, maybe readers aren’t genre savvy going in, or they don’t recognize the genre at all because of the different medium and unusual backdrop. (Kind of like how people miss that Kuroko no Basuke is a classical revenge story because its backdrop is high-school basketball.) Maybe readers are going in expecting a simple AU and the subversion of expectations makes everything hit that much harder—or maybe its just because its a written medium so you’re right in the characters’ heads through everything rather than just watching actors on a screen.

I don’t really know! I’m not complaining, though. Writing Dominoes has been really cathartic for me, and if it brings catharsis to other people or helps them in anyway, I’m happy! Like I said, I’m pretty proud of how Part 1 has turned out, and everyones’ reactions weren’t a bad surprise, but a good one! If a work of mine can provoke those kinds of reactions in people, it’s more than I ever dreamed of.
