Thinking about how aggravating it is that fandom boils down a lot of really fascinating Ace Attorney ships to "oh, so we're copying narumitsu's homework again, are we?" --as though the only reason that someone might find plausibly these ships (romantic and/or platonic) interesting is surface-level similarities to the fandom juggernaut pairing and not like the compelling characters and their established bonds in and of themselves.
#aa salt#ace attorney#imagine acting like your ship 'invented' devotion to an old and once-dear friend and wanting to save them from the world and themselves#and being completely unironic about it#and assuming that other ships that involve this very very common and established trope are just 'copying' your fave#n@rumitsus do this all the time and have the audacity to act all *shocked pikachu face*#if someone dares to suggest shipping cykesquill or nahyupollo romantically#asoryuu gets a pass but then some people turn around and dunk on baroryuu and asobaro on their behalf#which also sucks b/c honestly i prefer both of those ships#but i like asoryuu well enough and they deserve better than being reduced to 'what if narumitsu in period drama setting?'#sorry not sorry but#cykesquill; nahyupollo; asoryuu are all arguably more interesting takes on the dynamic than the basic blueprint set by n@rumitsu#krisnix and langworth also fall into this albeit not in a paralleling n@rumitsu's arc way#but specifically kris and lang being reduced to being phoenix's and miles's 'type' and/or temporary displacement by the nm shippers#kris may be rich; smart; quiet; and glasses but he is so much more than 'miles but evil'#meanwhile literally all that phoenix and lang have in common are spiky hair; heroic; and sassy#and yet it's just assumed by much of the fandom that this is the case and its just phoenix or miles only being attracted to kris and lang#b/c of surface level similarities to their true beloved#i just...i'm tired#why do so many of y'all have to filter everything about every aspect of this fandom through a n@rumitsu lens#do not even get me started on 'that man' nonsense#fandom makes aai 1 entirely about one (1) line and totally ignores all of the more interesting dynamics for miles w/ gumshoe; lang; + kay#phoenix isn't even in the damn game and yet people are fixated on a single vague allusion to him instead of all the other great stuff#happening w/ miles' character in the game that have little to nothing to do with phoenix#not tagging n@rumitsu b/c omg can you even imagine?#but i guess i can tag the others#cykesquill#nahyupollo#asoryuu

is it me or did BioWare get the names of the 2 main reaper antagonists totally backward?
like if you told me before my first playthrough there were two named reapers in the entire franchise - the earliest one who’d played solo “lookout” for millennia whose purpose was to signal the fleet, and the grudge-driven Daddy Reaper who was the most senior leader of an army of millions of giant robotic spacemonsters — then asked me to guess which one was called “Harbinger” and which one was called “Sovereign”, I’ll give you 3 guesses how it’d go.

"Racist or elitist" no we don't like kpop bc it's completely corporate, most idols are abused by their management, and the fans are annoying as shit
All valid reasons to hate on the industry.
Absolutely NOT valid reasons to wish death on the people being abused by it.

i graduated almost 9 years ago and i STILL think about high school and how much it sucked to this day. maybe it actually did traumatize me idk but what i do know is that i Really want to get over it.
#maybe i should go back to therapy but i would really prefer not to#idk i just don't find talking to a cishet white lady very healing#and i don't have the money to shop around for a minority status therapist#isn't that so fucked up?#i think therapy is fucked up actually like unironically i think it's a new form of capitalist hell#because everyone wants you to get therapy but no one wants to talk to you like you're a real person#we wouldn't NEED therapists if we could actually talk to each other about the things that matter and bother us#a lot of the things i need therapy for are like. the state of capitalism and modern colonialism and neo liberalism#like my dread and suicidal ideation come from the state of the world and like genocide and oppression and shit#talking to a cishet white woman about my time in high school where i was socially ostracized for being a little sjw bigmouth#even if she IS at least somewhat class conscious and educated like she's not completely ignorant#but also i shouldn't feel like i have to educate my therapist??#i shouldn't feel like i can't bring up certain topics because she literally just wouldn't understand#it's not a matter of being able to empathize like i'm sure she's completely capable of that#but like we had a conversation about policing and i was like i believe in police abolition and she had no idea what that looked like#i recommended her a book (the end of policing) and the next few sessions she never brought it up or mentioned it#and she recommended ME a book by a jewish holocaust survivor (man's search for meaning)#after we had talked about how pointless i felt life was and how i didn't understand how holocaust survivors could keep going#(and a lot of them didn't. after being forced to assimilate with no support back into capitalism many of them committed suicide)#(my opinion is they never should have had to work another day in their lives but here we are!)#and anyway i just don't find therapy helpful. personally.#also i read the book and she didn't and i just found that she didn't consider us equals. of course not. i'm her customer.#in a situation like therapy under capitalism you are never going to be equals and they will never treat you as such#they can't. it's selfish to expect them to. they have so much they already have to do in order to support the people in their care.#of course this woman couldn't read the book i recommended while i could read the one she did. like of course.#but that's not helpful to me. that type of therapy under capitalism doesn't help me

I'm so glad the gays have finally reclaimed Goncharov, because for so long Film Bros were treating it the way they treated Fight Club. They really took a deeply homoerotic film that criticizes/satirizes toxic masculinity and deliberately misread it as an unironic endorsement of toxic masculinity. Like??? How can you miss the point of something so badly???
Tumblr media
It's so frustrating because the original authors of Fight Club and Goncharov (Chuck Palahniuk, Matteo JWHJ 0175) were gay men who were criticizing society’s definition of the ideal “strong tough masculine man” through a queer lens. And even though both films are flawed (I know have issues with them), they make some powerful points about the way masculinity can be self-destructive! And the homoerotic subtext the film bros love to erase was both very intentional and also a large part of the Entire Point. I’m glad the texts are finally getting more appreciation from people who understand that.
Honestly, listening to straight film bros talk about Goncharov makes me wonder if they even WATCHED the movie. They seemed to have entirely missed the point of it, like they watched a completely different worse movie that doesn’t actually exist

JJK men and petnames
Nobody asked for this, but here are the pet names I think the JJK men would call you (and also a couple other fluffy thoughts):
Gojo Satoru - Satoru LOVES petnames and basically never calls you by your actual name. It's always baby, honey or sweetie, but he also likes to call you cringier names like sweetcheeks (and no he is not referring to the ones on your face), hot stuff, future wife. Fr though he absolutely and completely unironically starts calling you wifey once you've been together for awhile even if you aren't married yet. Loves when you call him hubby back. Will do that thing where he thinks he's in trouble if you call him by his actual name because he's so used to you calling him honey or baby instead.
Nanami Kento - He is pretty reserved when it comes to petnames. If other people are around, he'll just call you your name (unless he sees Satoru get too flirty with you, in which case he'll come up behind you, rest his hand on your lower back and greet you with a "hello, darling" to subtly remind Satoru to back off), but when you two are alone he almost always calls you sweetheart, darling, or dear. Sometimes in the morning when he's feeling cuddly and sentimental to have you next to him he'll call you his angel while he pulls you into his arms and kisses your forehead oh my god I'm soft.
Geto Suguru - I don't think he's that big on petnames actually, but he does call you babe, and sometimes princess when he's teasing you. But I think he mostly shows his affection in "practical" ways -acts of service like doing little things to show that he's thinking of you or helping you with a task, or by talking about the future and making plans with you in mind.
Fushiguro Toji - Whatever you have with him, it's not gonna be high commitment (if you've seen the Barbie movie, you're basically his Long Term, Long Distance, Low Commitment, Casual Girlfriend lol). He also sometimes calls you babe and princess -especially if you're at least a few years younger than him, again mostly to tease you. He might even call you "little girl" if you're short and/or years his junior just to get under your skin. He likes when you give him an attitude back. But his other pet names have to do with how physically attractive he thinks you are, so he'll call you "beautiful" or even "sexy." Will absolutely greet you with a "hey, sexy" when he shows up at your door probably for a booty call.
Kamo Choso - This man is soo sweet, he thinks you're the light of his life and will tell you as much. He mostly refers to you as my love or just "love", but sometimes also sweetheart and darling. That being said, I think his love language is more physical touch than anything else (although more subtly than Satoru, who would be all over you all of the time if he could). He loves to walk arm in arm with you when you're out together and will frequently give you pecks on the cheek out of the blue.

I'm trying to find a passage from a Star Trek novel but can't figure out which one beyond vaguely thinking it was on of yours. It went "Vulcans never lie.", Spock lied. Does that sound familiar? I really like it an also recently saw "can Vulcans lie" discourse going around again which made me think of it.
It's not mine. ...Which is all I'm absolutely sure of. What fascinates me is that this image/scan—
Tumblr media
—has been used absolutely unchanged in numerous tweets and posts all over the place. And not once that I can find, after about twenty minutes' / half an hour's searching, does anyone refer to the specific book or give enough context to even hint usefully at which one it is. So, sorry not to be more helpful. (ETA: the book in question is Collision Course, which William Shatner co-wrote with Gar and Judith Reeves-Stevens. See the notes for the details.)
...But you're completely right about the discourse: I've noticed the uptick in it (with some amusement). Way too much of it seems to rest on unironic or non-contexted readings of dialogue in ST:TOS s3e2:
COMMANDER: There's a well-known saying, or is it a myth, that Vulcans are incapable of lying? SPOCK: It is no myth. COMMANDER: Then tell me truthfully now, by your honor as a Vulcan, what was your mission? SPOCK: I reserve the privilege of speaking only when it will not violate my honor as a Vulcan. COMMANDER: It is unworthy of a Vulcan to resort to subterfuge. SPOCK: You're being clever, Commander. That is unworthy of a Romulan. It is not a lie to keep the truth to oneself.
But what a lot of people invoking this scene neglect to point out—or have failed to notice—is that Spock is in fact repeatedly lying his glutei off straight through this episode. Indeed no more than a minute later in the scene you get this—
SPOCK: I am speaking the truth for the benefit of the Enterprise and the Federation. I say now and for the record, that Captain Kirk ordered the Enterprise across the Neutral Zone on his own initiative and his craving for glory.
—at which point Captain Kirk appears to flip out, and Spock administers him the "Vulcan Death Grip" (another lie, as we're informed in the clear in act 3), etc etc.
(chuckle) Anyway, canonical material has played with this trope/concept repeatedly over time. I think my favorite is the "Ahh..." one here at 0:09. :)

What are your thoughts on guardians vol.3? (If you have watched it) I went into it, expecting it went to the garbage like the rest of the mcu, but I was pleasantly surprised by its creativity, trope subversion, and how it wrapped up the previously unresolved arks of its characters.
That's what I've heard!
The thing is, Guardians 3 could be the most transcendent work of cinema ever made, and I'd probably still feel little to no motivation to watch it at this point. It's not Guardians's fault - it's just suffering from the same problem that superhero comics have been struggling with for decades: no matter how good an individual arc or run is, absolutely nothing good lasts or matters in the long term, and the stories are shaped in such a way that "the long term" is the only thing anyone gets to build towards.
Whenever I complain about the MCU I get a handful of people loudly complaining about my complaining, with the general thesis that if I don't like it I shouldn't watch it or talk about it - if I'm not having fun, just stop engaging with it. And the thing is, I have. I am intellectually interested in why this massive franchise is fumbling the bag so hard, which is why I still check in on it sometimes, but I've long since stopped turning to the MCU for uncritical entertainment. And even the good movies or shows with a lot of interesting ideas - good character arcs, fun concepts, interesting planting for future payoff - don't draw me in anymore, because they're hooked into a massive moneymaking machine that will scrap and squander anything if they think it'll make them more in the quarter. It doesn't matter how good the writing is, because the writers are not allowed to tell a complete, finished story, and they have no control over what happens to their characters outside of their own script.
Captain America's arc was set up from literally minute one to answer one burning question at the core of his character: does a world without a war still need Captain America? After that incredibly basic tee-up at the end of First Avenger, half a dozen movies failed to come up with a reason to say "yes," and now Steve is retired for good after getting fumbled through four different storylines that couldn't even pretend that they needed him (the unused Chekhov's Phone from the end of Civil War still haunts me). The foundational arc of his entire character never happened because nobody bothered to keep track of it past a single movie.
Taika did something interesting with Thor in Ragnarok - take away Mjolnir, force him to recognize what it means to be the god of thunder, give him a very Odin-y missing eye - and the very next movie undid all of it. Just kidding, never mind, here's an eye and a new weapon and also his old weapon again, and in one more movie we're even gonna give him his hair back, probably as an apology for all the completely unironic fatphobia we're gonna slather him in for two and a half hours. I'm not even surprised Love And Thunder was such an overblown mess that barely took itself seriously - why would Taika bother trying to give Thor another arc when the powers that be will just roll it back in six months anyway?
I hear Rocket Raccoon has a fantastic arc in this movie. That's great, and demonstrates that he's being written by a writer that deeply cares about him. But he's part of the MCU, and the MCU doesn't let anything end, so if current patterns hold, Rocket is going to continue to serve as quippy plushie-bait for the next dozen movies and none of that depth is going to come through in the long term. Hell, since they're making Kang noises for the Next Big Threat and Kang's entire gimmick is rewriting timelines, literally none of this is guaranteed to matter. By next year, it might not have even happened anymore.
The MCU has successfully shaped itself into a paradigm where the bright spots of good writing are overridden and lost as soon as the writers room turns over, and that makes it really hard for me to muster up the enthusiasm to watch even a really good movie that's locked into the exact same grist mill as everything else. I'm glad people liked it, I hope it gets to stay good this time - I just have no desire to watch it.

Your discussions on AI art have been really interesting and changed my mind on it quite a bit, so thank you for that! I don’t think I’m interested in using it, but I feel much less threatened by it in the same way. That being said, I was wondering, how you felt about AI generated creative writing: not, like AI writing in the context of garbage listicles or academic essays, but like, people who generate short stories and then submit them to contests. Do you think it’s the same sort of situation as AI art? Do you think there’s a difference in ChatGPT vs mid journey? Legitimate curiosity here! I don’t quite have an opinion on this in the same way, and I’ve seen v little from folks about creative writing in particular vs generated academic essays/articles
i think that ai generated writing is also indisputably writing but it is mostly really really fucking awful writing for the same reason that most ai art is not good art -- that the large training sets and low 'temperature' of commercially available/mass market models mean that anything produced will be the most generic version of itself. i also think that narrative writing is very very poorly suited to LLM generation because it generally requires very basic internal logic which LLMs are famously bad at (i imagine you'd have similar problems trying to create something visual like a comic that requires consistent character or location design rather than the singular images that AI art is mostly used for). i think it's going to be a very long time before we see anything good long-form from an LLM, especially because it's just not a priority for the people making them.
ultimately though i think you could absolutely do some really cool stuff with AI generated text if you had a tighter training set and let it get a bit wild with it. i've really enjoyed a lot of AI writing for being funny, especially when it was being done with tools like botnik that involve more human curation but still have the ability to completely blindside you with choices -- i unironically think the botnik collegehumour sketch is funnier than anything human-written on the channel. & i think that means it could reliably be used, with similar levels of curation, to make some stuff that feels alien, or unsettling, or etheral, or horrifying, because those are somewhat adjacent to the surreal humour i think it excels at. i could absolutely see it being used in workflows -- one of my friends told me recently, essentially, "if i'm stuck with writer's block, i ask chatgpt what should happen next, it gives me a horrible idea, and i immediately think 'that's shit, and i can do much better' and start writing again" -- which is both very funny but i think presents a great use case as a 'rubber duck'.
but yea i think that if there's anything good to be found in AI-written fiction or poetry it's not going to come from chatGPT specifically, it's going to come from some locally hosted GPT model trained on a curated set of influences -- and will have to either be kind of incoherent or heavily curated into coherence.
that said the submission of AI-written stories to short story mags & such fucking blows -- not because it's "not writing" but because it's just bad writing that's very very easy to produce (as in, 'just tell chatGPT 'write a short story'-easy) -- which ofc isn't bad in and of itself but means that the already existing phenomenon of people cynically submitting awful garbage to literary mags that doesn't even meet the submission guidelines has been magnified immensely and editors are finding it hard to keep up. i think part of believing that generative writing and art are legitimate mediums is also believing they are and should be treated as though they are separate mediums -- i don't think that there's no skill in these disciplines (like, if someone managed to make writing with chatGPT that wasnt unreadably bad, i would be very fucking impressed!) but they're deeply different skills to the traditional artforms and so imo should be in general judged, presented, published etc. separately.

Everybody should have their own fun, and this isn't trying to harsh anybody's buzz, but I find the impulse to make your own cutesy/badass Replika oc doing funny or heroic or badass things a little odd. Like, that character you designed as a super badass soldier, or well-armed and armored steely eyed cop type... who would they have been built to fight or police exactly? Remember who all those guns and weapons were intended for use on?
I know we're all sick of discourse over who "gets" the game, and I'm by no means scolding anybody for something that harmless, but what's interesting to me is the sense that designing overtly "cool" Replika personas and OCs, complete with the propaganda poster style imagery, feels a little...
I mean, bluntly, it's like the in-world propaganda worked, unironically, on some level, for many people. Kolibris aren't scary, they're whimsical and fun! Storches aren't notably cruel enforcers and chain gang drivers, they're Protektors! Falke isn't a camp commandant, she's a beautiful angel!
The Replikas aren't cool and heroic figures in the reality of the game. They're the carefully crafted organs of a system of control so dreadful it could do what it did to Elster and Ariane. They're victims to that system themselves too, sure - and humanising them is a nuanced and valuable observation of how totalitarian regimes maintain themselves - but that doesn't negate the fact they're also the ones who operate, enforce and perpetuate it, a big part of what the game knows and communicates about such societies. It's notable that the game makes it clear few, if any, of the Replikas actually buy into the Nation as an ideal at all - they enforce it no less pitilessly anyway, incapable or unsafe to imagine anything else.
Their affectations, pasttimes, trinkets, and even affections for each other, all serve to draw a stark contrast to how callously they regard the gestalts they keep suppressed. Their disposability is something they're conscious and fearful of themselves, but fail to recognise as a commonality with the people they brutalise every day, their business as usual. The only grief, tragedy or suffering they acknowledge is their own - they have no regard for any such things in the humans they have... well, dehumanised.
But S-23 Sierpinski was such a hellhole for most of its denizens under "normal" conditions that the nightmare it becomes is arguably an improvement; if only because there are fewer people left now to suffer it. There's a dark poetry here - because the place's banal cruelty is "off camera" to us, it's very naturally less real to us than the grief of the crying Eule. It's only natural, too, to forget how grim the Replikas' purposes are when you don't have to see anyone endure the brunt of it.
And isn't that the very same effect a state like the Nation is seeking in the first place, by disappearing people away to such dark little corners to have it done? In our world, no less than that one.
That works like a kind of propaganda too, not being able to see it - a propaganda of hidden things, as powerful as any poster. A space that's been intentionally left blank.
Kolibris are literal thought police; they intrude on people's very minds, interrogating them to death as a matter of course, with hardly a care either way. The various Protektor classes are functionally concentration camp guards and slave drivers. Falke and Adler are overseeing what amounts to a gulag, one so unimaginably awful Ariane preferred to spend years of her life alone in space to the prospect of being sent there, and inevitably worked to death, far underground.
I think there's a reason we never see one of those posters for LSTRs in game. How could we be asked to forgive our own if we ever did?

hii i've been stomped on by the universe and there's no scott pilgrim x reader content anywhere 😔 a tragedy so please please can you some scott being dumbly obsessed with anything fem reader does? he's so stupid and i think he'd do anything to impress a girl. thank u!!
this is my favorite trope EVER (ALSO I AGREE there is such a lack of scott pilgrim content which is so ironic because the series literally revoles around him)
obsessed!sott pilgrim x fem!reader
oh my god
you think scott with ramona is bad??
this is a whole new level
we all know that scott has slightly less brain cells than the average joe
so when he sees you for the first time?? oh my GODDDDD
you're on his mind 24/7
he will talk wallace's ear off about you to the point where he has to kick scott out of the house for a few hours
and then he'll talk to his sister or julie or kim or the rest of sex bob-omb
as soon as you guys become friends, he does literally EVERYTHING to try and impress you
he's the epitome of "this one's for you" *misses the shot completely*
he unironically uses horrible pickup lines on you thinking that they're going to work
they never do, but it's awfully endearing :3
he'll also try out your hobbies to try and impress you
so if you're like an artist, he'll make you a bunch of paintings
or if you skateboard, he'll try skateboarding (and he will eat shit) (it will be hilarious)
whenever you're in his line of sight he stares at you COMPLETELY DUMBFOUNDED
"how is she so perfect........" "she's just standing there??" "i'm in love."
scott thinks he's very discreet about it but no
no, he is not
he is so obvious.
he also takes a lot of advice from wallace and you know how much wallace loves to sabotage scott /hj
"im in lesbians with you......." "huh??" - you and scott probably
his silly little antics are so endearing it's hard to NOT fall for him
he's a stupid little man who is deadset on the fact that you're the love of his life, and he would do literally anything to please you
