Okay here me out miggy and sunny who get ambushed by another spider but it turns out to be there daughter from the future?! I feel like they’d be shocked to see a teenager (like 18) just trying to fix a mess she made to get back home. I love all your work especially Miguel and Sunny!

A/N: Hey lovely~ So I kinda went off track a little with this one and kinda focused a little more on Maria, the daughter, and not so much her fixing the problem and more her being overwhelmed by the idea of the multiverse. I'm sorry I went off kilter but I loved the idea of seeing how they would react in general to meeting their child.

Also, I've been obsessed with this song on TikTok so I had to name their daughter after it.

Okay, I guess If im gonna do this, I’m gonna have to start with the beginning, Hi I’m Maria O’ Hara and I’m-

“Kids, Breakfast is ready~!” A soft cheery voice calls out causing a groan to escape the teenager’s mouth. The sound of two pairs of feet book it past her bedroom door with the notable bang of one of them being knocked into the wall.

“Mami!” A teary voice of her seven year old brother yells. “Gabriel keeps pushing me into the wall!”

“No I’m not!” The thirteen year old cries out with a loud crack in his voice. “He keeps getting in front of me!”

“Gabriel, Ben, quit bickering and come here before your father comes down.” The gentle scolding causes the boys to continue their run down the stairs while Maria rolls her eyes and goes back to her diary.

Dammit, okay, we can work with this. Hi, I’m Maria O’ Hara. I’m 18 years old and I live in Nueva York with my mama and papa and my two brothers. I’m basically your normal teenager except for one-

“Maria?” a soft knock on her door causes her to call back through the door.

“Yes, Mama?” “Breakfast is ready, honey. Come on down stairs before it gets cold…” She can hear the cautious edge in her mother’s voice as she tries to coo her child down stairs.

“I’m on my way, Mama, just let me get finish getting dressed.” She cringes at the lie as she was already dressed and ready for her day. Maria holds her breath for a couple of minutes until she can hear her mom mutter a simple okay as the sound of heavy foot steps come up beside her.

The low baritone of her father’s whisper can be heard along with her mother’s worried tone as she can hear her trying to urge her husband down stairs to give their daughter some privacy.

Maria returns to her writing as she knows shes definitely on a ticking time bomb now that her father was up and down stairs. He was a strickler for spending meals together as a family and the only time he let go of that rule was when one was sick or when…Maria and Javi were in that accident…

She shakes the haunting image of Javi out of her mind as she writes.

I’m basically your normal teenager except for one thing. I’m Spider Woman, the one and only beloved hero of Queens.Two years ago, I gotten bite by this funky spider at my dad’s lab in Alchemax and I gained these awesome super powers. It was honestly the best thing to ever happen to me. I got to swing around and stop bad guys all before fourth period. The only person who knew was my best friend Javi-

“Maria!” A deep voice booms as Maria gritted her teeth. “¡Tu madre ya te llamó dos veces! ¡Baja y come!”

“Shit!” The teenager curses as she rushes to collect her stuff into her bag. The white and blue fabric of her spider suit shines at the bottom of the bag before her necessities get piled on top of it.

“¡¿Qué diablos dijiste?!” Her father yells as she can hear her mother yell at him. 

“¡¡Miguel, no te atrevas a maldecir en la mesa de mi comedor!!”

Maria hurries down the stairs as she listens to her family interact at the table.

A muffled voice that she figured was her mother scolds the angry man while a soft more masculine mutter apologizes. A couple of giggles can be heard before a stern voice scolds them as well for what Maria can hear, “Chicos, no le faltéis al respeto a vuestro padre. La única razón por la que tu madre puede hacerlo es porque me echará de la cama.”

As Maria makes it into the dining room, she laughs along with her brothers as their mom playfully slaps their dad’s arm. The tall dark haired man chuckles at his adorable wife before catching her hand and kisses it, causing the woman to smile with a love sick look in her eyes. 

“Eww!” Ben cries as he tries to block his vision with his toast causing the couple to roll their eyes.

Maria sits down beside her father Miguel and Gabriel as she starts to fill her plate. All of the children looked exactly like their father with only slight changes in hair textures and certain facial features. Ben, the youngest of the trio, looked the most like their mother with his eye shape and nose matching hers while the middle child, Gabriel, was a copy and paste verison of their father with only his mother’s smile indicating that they were related. Maria was a better mixture of the two with her mother’s height and face shape making her her mother’s “clone”, Miguel’s words not their’s. 

All the siblings would disagree as their matching dark brown eyes and their dark hair. They also had his temper. There wasn’t a single day that didn’t end without a fight. But they all loved each other despite the stress they put on their poor sweet mother’s heart.

“Yahooo!” The web crusader swings around the city with a laugh bubbling through her being as the adrenaline pumps through her veins. Today wasn’t that bad today when it came to crime. No cat burgalurs, no bank robberies, No super mutants, No robots, and No…

A shrilling laugh fills the sky as Maria lands on top of a building. As she looks around for the source of the noise, a figure flies over her. Several flashes of gold falls down onto the streets below and a series of explosions go off at the chilling sound of a woman’s laugh among the symphony of screams. The woman was flying on a golden glider looking device with a skin tight blue holographic suit with an orange cloak wrapping around her features with a devilish jackolatern mask on.

“Who the hell is that?” She asks to no one as she swung up to catch up to the maniac, “Hey Spooky!”

Maria sticks a web onto the glider and propels herself into the air before slamming down on top of the villain. The woman shrieks as she falls off her glider with the spider until the glider follows them down. The villainess throws a purple bomb at the girl before her glider catches her. The teenager shoots a web onto a near by building and catches the bomb. 

“No thanks, I’m not on interested in what you’re cooking.” She throws the bomb into the air before it explodes. However, instead of smoke, an orange portal appears as a strong suction causes the spider’s grip to slip and fly into the air. “Hey!” She yells as she gets pulled into the portal.

A scream echos through the Lobby as a flaying spider falls down from a portal. Hobie rolls his eyes while Jessica looks up unimpress. 

“Another newbie?” She asks as the spider girl catches herself on a walk way above the duo. 

“I don’t know.” The rocker mumbles as he tunes his guitar. “You know that they normally end up in some alternate dimension where the floor is lave or some shite.”

The spider girl looks around her in shock as she sees millions of other spider people walking around her and she begins to hyperventilates. “No no no no. Please Please don’t tell me I’m dead……”  

Jessica frowns hearing a young voice panicking and she whistles up at the girl. 

“Hey, Newbie! Come here for a minute.”

Maria swings down as the older woman takes off her googles, her warm eyes brings the younger girl to ease enough to ask,

“W-where am I?”

Hobie chuckles, thinking that the girl was confused after failing to jump. “You’re in the Lobby, remember? Didn’t Sunny give you a tour?” 

“Sunny? Whose that?” Maria looks at the duo confused as Hobie takes off his mask to look at the girl more closely. 

Jessica looks at the girl suspiciously as Hobie examines the masked girl. “Your suit is certainly different. It kinda looks like O’ Hara’s.”

Maria jumps at the mention of her last name and faces Hobie as her patience snaps. “How did you know that? And who are you guys and why are you guys dresssed lik-”

The manic girl halts as she hears a familiar voice call out from above. 

“Hey,guys!” The gentle voice calls out as she swings down from several platforms above with a friendly smile plastered on her unmasked face. Hobie and Jessica return her smile as she lands infront of them. Maria stares in horror as the duo greets the cheery spider.

“Oi, Sunny, whatcha swing up to,love?” Hobie jokes as he hugs the woman he viewed as his friend and sister figure. 

“Boss man sent me out to look at what fell through the portal while Lyla was rebooting.” She says calmly as Jessica scoffs. Miguel sending Sunny out to check something out? Nope, thats not how he ran things. He would rather send out everyone else before he would dare risk his sol getting injured.

“Boss sent you to check out a portal?” The beautiful woman asks as Sunny rubs the back of her neck, clearly leaving out some details.

“Well, an anomalous Hobgoblin managed to hack into Lyla’s systems and shut her down so it can escape…Our comms are down too..He said to get Hobie and Ben so they can investigate the scene actually…” The jumping spider admits as she feels her cheeks warm in embarrassment. 

Jessica chuckles at her friend’s confession as she remembers the new spider who was silent the whole time they were speaking.

“Oh yeah, well this new recruit came out of the portal.”She shrugs as she directed Sunny to the small blue spider woman. “You really need to give these new guys better directions for portal jumping.”

The now confused woman shakes her head as she looks at Maria before looking back at Jessica. 

“There aren’t any new recruits.” She states as she frowns at the still masked girl as she walks up to her. “Hey, whats your name, honey?” She asks in her familiar concerned voice that Maria just heard this morning.

It was her mother…well at least someone who looks like her mother. She was several years younger than her mom, clearly in her mid to late twenties. Other than that, she was her. Even down to the same facial markers and the always warm edge of her voice. What really drawn her back was the fact her mom, or this woman that looked like her was wearing a black spider suit like her own with white along her chest and inner lining of her limbs. 

“Holy shit…” The girl gasps at the woman before she slowly reaches up and removes her mask. Her dark eyes peers back at her ‘mother’s’ in shock before mumbling, “Mama?”

“Mama!?” Jessica screams in surprise before she quickly studies the now unmasked girl and the paling spiderwoman. The similar way their wide eyes meet each other while their matching jawlines stuck in an a gasps expression. They definitely looked the part…

(Y/N) was the first one to move as she slowly lifts her trembling hands up to the girl’s face and cups it in a gentle grasp. She carefully traces her features with a haunted look on her face, almost like she was looking for something in her face, or maybe someone. As realization forms in her face that this was in fact her child, tears began to bubble in her waterline as her lips trembled.

“You’re my baby?...I have a daughter…” She says outloud before gently tracing under Maria’s eye with a look of disbelief and love. Maria’s own eyes burn as she sees her mother’s face in her clone as she nods. “Yea…My name is Maria…Maria O’Hara.”

And with that new revelation, the cheery spider faints due to the shock while Jessica yells out for help while Hobie was frozen due to the fact that not only that Miguel O’Hara and his delightful sidekick have a child from a different dimension, but that she was actually hot.

Safe to say, Miguel was not happy. 

After Lyla successfully rebooted and came back online, Miguel went to dimension 1784-B and recaptured the Hobgoblin. He never felt such satisfaction than when he tackled the flying witch out of the sky and tore apart her glider with his bare hands. He wasn’t very pleased that the villain easily gotten her hands on one of the gizmos and some prototype traps he was working on, so he made sure that the femal hobgoblin would never dare attempt to do anything like that again.

.After he returned to the surveillance platform, his annoyance grew as he hears that not only did some spider woman he had no idea about came into the Lobby, but that some incident caused his sunshine to be taken to the infirmary. 

“Lyla,” The annoyed man calls to the AI as he walks towards the infirmary. A tiny version of his fur coat wearing digital assistant appears on his shoulder as he focuses ahead of him with a glare. He can practically feel all the blood vessels in his hand pop as clenched his fist as he thought about all the ways he was going to say to the woman who had the nerve to injure his amor. “Give me all the information on this spider.”

“Yes ‘Miggy’” Lyla teases as she pulls up the file. “Spiderwoman 1784-B aka Maria O’Hara. 18 years old and has been spiderwoman for 2 years. A student at NYU with an undecided major and lives with her two younger brothers, Gabriel and Ben O’ Hara and her parents…Oh Shit!” 

The miniature AI starts laughing as she clenches her stomach. Miguel growls at Lyla’s outburst and seethes. “What is it?”

As she recovers, she throws up a projection infront of him with a smirk. “Check this out. You and Sunny do get a happy ending!” 

Miguel freezes as his wide eyes look at the image infront of him with a tremble in his form. The image displayed was a family picture that was clearly taken at a high school graduation with a family of five huddled together with wide grins splitting their loving faces. The first to catch his attention was the vision of him standing beside a teenage girl with a boy no older than seven on his shoulders with a look of happiness and pride in his gaze as one arm was slung across the girl’s shoulder. He was clearly older than he was now, but the lack of red eyes and fangs made Miguel nearly not recognize him. Its been so long since he’s seen himself before becoming spiderman… The next thing that caught his attention was an older version of his beloved also smiling at the camera with a teenage boy on your side a gentle hand placed on his shoulder as the woman’s attention was focus gazing a her daughter with such joy.

The children were a perfect mixture of you both despite the obvious favour in appearance being on his side. He carefully examines each child and their features as he releases a shaky breath as a single tear escapes his eye. 

This was impossible…How can you two have a family somewhere in the spiderverse and he didn’t know? the two have a family…they got married…she gave him the most beautiful children he could ever dream of and they both weren’t spidermen…they met and fell in love with out the worry of the universe on their shoulders…But their daughter…Their girl has this…burden instead…

“Miguel?” The unease in the AI’s voice brings him back to reality as he rubs his eyes. 

“I’m fine.” He snaps as he materializes his mask back onto his face.

“So we are all connected by this weird multiverse of spidermen?” Maria questions as she quips an eyebrow as she looks at the other teen.

“Yep.” Gwen nods as she leans back in the chair. 

The group were huddled around the hospital bed as their cheerful friend laid in bed unconscious. Upon pouncing the new spider about her life and what life was like on her dimension, Gwen took the initiative and began explaining about the Spiderverse, careful to avoid talking about the girl’s variant spider parents.

“And this is a team of Spiderpeople that goes around and makes sure that the events of their life goes on course? Like the time police? Does that mean theres other versions of me? “ She rapidly askes the punk. The blonde chuckles as she can definitely see how much of Sunny was actually in this girl. 

“Yep and kinda like that. We make sure the canon goes as planned so your universe doesn’t collapse. And when it comes to the other versions of you…” Gwen looks towards the unconscious spider before meet her ‘daughter’s’ curious gaze. “If theres other versions of Sunny and Miguel, then there is other versions of you.”

“Wait. Is there a spiderman version of my dad?” She asks as the door opens.

Jessica looks up from watching her phone and smiles at Miguel while Hobie curses. Miguel’s mask fades away as Hobie begins to speak.

“Look boss, the kid didn’t mean to…”

“Are you alright, Maria?” Miguel’s uncharacteristicially soft voice interrupts Hobie’s defense as his ruby eyes locked on the girl.

His rapid heart flooded his senses as he looked over his ‘daughter’. She didn’t look like Gabriella like he thought he would, even though he already seen her face. She looked like his sunshine despite her having a majority of his features. She was his girl, his beloved’s child…

“Um yea…”The starstruck girl mumbles as she looks at the variant of her father. Unlike the unconscious variant of her mom, the age wasn’t the biggest indicate that he was different from her dad, it was the gentle red eyes and the fangs peeking out from his lips. “Holy shit, you’re cool…” She accidentially admits out loud which causes the man to chuckle.

“Oye, no maldigas delante de tus padres, pequeña araña.” He playfully scolds before he starts fiddling with his gizmo. “I think its time you head home now. Its almost time for dinner and I’m sure ‘I’ wouldn’t like for you to be late.”

A portal opens beside them as Maria smiles at Miguel. “Cool…can I have one of those?”

“Absolutely not.”

“Well it was worth a try.” Maria giggles as she walks up to the portal before looking at Miguel concerned. “What about that Hobgoblin? And about…” The teenager looks towards her sleeping ‘mom’.

“I took care of it for you and don’t worry about her.” Miguel chuckles as he gazes lovingly at his love. “Yo siempre cuido de tu madre, ¿no?”

Maria grins as she feels giddy over the idea that no matter what dimension, her parents will always love each other.

“Yep and word of advice, stop having kids after one!” She jokes as she steps into the portal and goes home.

A soft groan emits from the bed as Miguel looks up from his book. The sleepy eyes of his love meets his as he leans over and caresses his cheek. 

“Good morning, mi amor…you had a good rest?” He coos as he pushes the hair away from her face. 

Tears prickle in her sleepy gaze as the memory of her new friend came back. In a horse whisper, she tearfully asks, “Did you see her? Did you meet our girl?” A smile forms on her face as Miguel nods and rests his forehead against hers.

“Sí, mi amor. Y ella era perfecta.”

As the portal closes behind her, Maria looks around with a breath of relief as she sees shes in her bedroom back home. 

“Thank god that’s over-!”

Before the stress could finally leave her chest, a shattering sound of a phone screen snaps her attention to her brother Gabriel looking at her in shock. Maria looks horrified as she realizes she is in the middle of her bedroom in her spidersuit and unmasked infront of her little brother…

“SHIT!!!”

he beams with so pride at the act. even though you knew you could ask him to stop, he would. he would for you. but you never could. and overtime you become just as proud, especially after meeting task 141.

has to get along with his team. he just loves you and them so much that he just wants everyone to get along!

having to be used to the long periods of no communication. they suck. because you can't even get a single letter or sign to tell you that he's okay. and it's hard not just for you but him too.

but i imagine gaz to be someone that's close to his family, so those periods of no communication, if you don't have anyone, his family always comes through to be there with you.

also, most definitely has to be an animal lover, especially for dogs. plus, if you are, he gets you an animal to keep you company when he's away.

when's he's home he spends every waking moment with you, possibly to fill the lack of time you guys haven't been able to spend together. you literally could be in the toliet then all of a sudden he's at the door waiting for you, going to hang out the washing? he's right there. even when you shower, he's either sitting on the floor waiting for you or trying to join in.

loves to take you out! shopping, on dates, for walks etc etc but he even like going to get groceries with you. like he finds geniune joy in it.

when it comes to sleep, you guys start of with him being big spoon and you little spoon. then over night, you guys just become tangled in eachother. your head on his arm, one of his legs thrown over yours, one of yours hooked on his.

also, i don't think he's the jealous type. like if you guys are out in public and some guy starts hitting on you, he kinda just smiles, and watches. because he knows you're not paying attention to the person in front of you, seeing as your eyes keep looking over at gaz with a loving look that was only ever for him.

but of course he has some insecure moments. those are when he's been away for too long. price is at side to steer him out've that mindset usually just by saying, "your an idiot gaz. have you seen how they look at ya?" then laswell would give gaz some mail you sent. which was a chessy letter, and some polaroids of you, you hugging your guys pet and even one with you and his family.

he does keep them in a little book he leaves tucked in price's office or with laswell for safe keeping while he's in the feild.

you guys do tiktok trends!!! from the dances, to the challenges!! you do em! you will spend nights learning dances! smile on both your faces. you put it up on a private tik tok. this was the reason price gets tik tok. he doesn't understand the fuss over it but he loves watching, lawells the same. i can also see alejandro and rudy dueting said dance, and doing it too. alejandro captioning it, "who's the better couple?"

he most definitely sulks when your guys pet listens to you and not him. so, in order for the animal to like him more he sneaks treats to them.

currently, i think he's 50/50 about having kids. he's away from home too often and he already misses you, adding a child would rip his heart. but if you really wanted a kid, he's for it. whatever you want to do, get pregnant, find a surrogate, or adopt. whatever.

if you wanted one right in the moment, he'll be slightly unprepared but will dive right in. would honestly be a great parent.

in saying that, if you don't ever want kids, he'll be a little gutted, but ultimately would be fine with that. i mean he has you, what more could he ask for?

that just means getting more pets :))))

your guys relationship, is definitely filled with laughter, banter and overall good vibes. you both can tease eachother about anything and everything. you'll often joke about him leaving you for price. "oo maybe be a little nicer to me and i just might consider it." btw, you guys don't keep it between you both and will outright say it in front of the others.

one time you said that if he has price you'd go for soap. soap nearly choking on his drink. "babe, his hair! you wouldn't cope!" "excuse you!" you grab soaps head, "you know how much potential is here? grow it out, maybe go for a mullet mohawk look- so much opportunity. only if it's okay with ghost of course." ghost quietly grumbles and looks away. if he weren't wearing his mask everyone would've seen the blush on his face.

just banter like that!

sometimes you guys sound like you're genuinely arguing and it freaks the guys out a little when they witness it. so when they step in they hear you yell, "i'm gonna order some food what do you want-" "can i please-" "nah! you get nothing!" yours and gaz tone was harsh but seeing the both of your faces, there's dumb smiles on the both of you, eyes brimming with tears, breathing heavily as you both laugh.

MOST DEFINITELY GET MATCHING CLOTHES.

like chirstmas pj's, sweaters, socks, shoes!

even getting some for your pets.

one christmas you guys went over to price's and got him and laswell matching clothes set, also getting one for laswell's wife.

baking together. gaz can bake.

but it's not like a sweet couply moment. he's very organized, does things in a peculiar way. "love, no." "gaz, yes." "that's too much chocolate-" "there's never too much!!!" he sometimes can turn into gordan ramsey.

however cooking together is the complete opposite. you both tend to play music and just mess around in the kitchen, making whatever is in the fridge, dancing and singing. he can cook pretty decent. will eat anything you put in front of him. if you're a bit of a gordon ramsay when it comes to cooking, you can act the same back to him when it comes to him and baking. "gaz if you put another spoonful of soy sauce in- i swear-" he backs off.

there are nights where he has night terrors. ptsd from countless missions coming in full swing. those nights are tough, but he always tries to not wake you once he's woken. per usual, you just know, waking as soon as he tries to leave the bed. there's little words said between the two of you. you hold his hand and go with him to check the windows and doors are locked. count the knives. make sure the lights are working. leaving the hallway light on, gaz pushes the bed into the corner, you climb in first, then he does too. you lay down, while he sits against the wall, an arm over you, sheilding you while pressing you close to him. all you can do is cuddle up to his side and hold him. you try not to sleep, wanting to stay awake with him. but the gentle sound of his breathing, his soft fingers tracing along your bare skin lulls you to sleep.

the next morning, the bed is moved back to its prior position, and gaz is still holding you. and you can tell with the alertness in his eyes and the stiffness of his body, he hadn't slept. so when you stir awake and stare up at him, the only thing you do is pull him down so his head is resting right over your heart, all you say is, "my turn to watch, love." and it works. he falls to sleep, body finally relaxing as he listened to the rythem of your heart, felt the steady rise and fall of your chest, and your fingers gently running over his hair, your other hand massaging his upperback, soothing his muscles.

and you stay like that. till just before lunch he wakes up to you watching something on your phone. you don't know he's awake till he's nuzzling into your neck, kissing whatever skin he can reach. murmmering, "what'd i do to deserve you?" that's all he does, whispering sweet words, and holding you.

the rest of the day you spend at home. moving from the bed to the couch. watching movies, sometimes sitting in silence, doing whatever task. gaz will journal, you will too. one of you or the both of you will make some food. it's a day where he doesn’t have the energy to see other people, even his family. so no ordering food. sometimes he'll move around the house, looking out the windows then returning to whatever he was doing.

sometimes it can last a couple of days, and the only people that are allowed to enter the space during this time are task 141, laswell and the los varquaro's. when they are free that is. it helps him to get outta his head and prepped to see people outside them and you.

on a final thought: saying, "i love you" to eachother wasn't a strange thing. because you both had said it to eachother your whole friendship

but gaz was the one to say it first and mean it in a way that was more than friends. he confessed how he felt and reassured you that if you didn't feel the same then you both could remain just as best friends. you quickly shut that down by saying you loved him too.

and from there your guys romantic relationship would start a little slow.

I ended up writing A LOT about this ask! Super excited to share everything (thank you!!!) but it's super long so under the cut. But I did format a bit to make it hopefully easier to read.

✏️"what are your current WIPs about?"

The main WIPs that I'm currently focusing on are The Secret Portal and School of the Legends, the former of which with more focus.

The Secret Portal is about a group of preteens/teens who discover a portal to another dimension. This dimension is full of people with powers with a minority of those without. After decades of protests from the oppressed minority, tensions rose, and eventually turned into a war of two extremes.

Hard to explain how everything connects, but I appreciate the nuance and multi-perspective approach this needs, but man is it hard. So much brainpower to make this story work, but I'm proud of what I have.

Despite a young cast this is a YA series (think Stranger Things in terms of age of characters vs demographic. This is TV-14 so to speak). I focus heavily on young perspectives because a) I was a kid when writing this for the first time (see later this post) so it just happened but also b) it ended up working thematically with a level of innocence needed there. Bonus, c) being in education I'm fascinated with young minds.

Still a long way to go and currently in the beta reading stage (see pinned post), which is definitely needed given a wide range of topics and fully appreciated to those who have given me their advice.

Planned to be a five book series that's essentially a long continuation from each installment to the next.

School of the Legends is a much easier story to write even if I don't have everything planned yet. It deals with various legends, stories, fairy tales, nursery rhymes, etc. in the same universe, but My Version, aka, things are based on the above, but not a direct copy.

The titular school is an international school meant for those gifted (people born with powers), magicked (people learning magic as a skill), and cursed (people who have powers thrust upon them).

I have an outline for the overall plot of the series (four books are planned) but not super far into it.

Have more characters planned than I know what to do with but most will probably be in the background no matter how sad that makes me.

🖋️"what inspired you to write your WIPs?"

Hm... Sometimes it's just impulse but let's backtrack.

TSP was first conceived as a grade school creative writing project. I just went overboard. Let's get into it.

Went into more detail on my website and tiktok, but the short version is that it was loosely inspired by a stuffed animals game from when I was a little younger which was in turn was loosely inspired by (drumroll) The Rainbow Magic fairy series. Don't know how that happened, so I guess that was a huge influence despite no similarities now.

My friends all inspired parts of it, as most of the OCs have their roots being friend inserts (gone now but it's funny the fragments that are left over from this).

What inspired me to keep going, however, was actually a bit of pride. I was super proud of the original assignment (15 pages!!! Twice as much as the second longest!! I got a 100%!!) and was also super invested in the world I made.

Admittedly when middle school me decided to turn this into a more """"grown up"""" series, it go really cringe...but I was so ambitious this would be published some day (HA).

TSP became what it is today due to an obsessive amount of writing in eighth grade (age 14) and hitting a block in all projects and deciding to start it over, very different from previous drafts.

SOTL was a bit of a passion side project that wasn't meaning to be #2 in WIPs, but I like where we are and it has more broad areas of inspiration.

What started my love for fairy tale adaptations were the Whatever After series and The Land of Stories series, especially the latter. I wanted to make my own version, so had some ideas for characters once again based on my friends. No plot ideas.

In early seventh grade I wrote a dreadful draft that included a "princess school" which was inspired by...I don't actually know I think I read a lot of princess school books but I don't remember the titles. So inspiration from there of course.

Other fairy tale retellings just increased my love for the subgenre, and I got more passionate about making my own, though each draft is so different it's hard to draw connections. It was basically an idea I tried until it worked.

🖥️"what types of writing do you do?"

Well, there's the obvious novel writing.

I love it. It's so hard but I live for the thrill.

Novels are more my thing because I have Too Many Ideas. I wrote a lot of short stories in my creative writing class and found them too limiting. Some may become novels, some maybe novellas. We will have to see.

Fiction is my thing but especially fantasy (I'm using this as a broad term that means "not realistic fiction" including sci-fi and other branches - I'm actually bad at high fantasy).

TSP has annoying sci-fi elements (I walked into this as if this project needed to be harder!), but SOTL is a more relaxed fantasy.

I love reading realistic fiction, but for my writing RF is too real sometimes, if that makes sense. That's obvious...idk how to get across what I'm saying, but I find myself able to express myself through fantasy when I'm doing my own creative writing.

Even in my creative writing class, I'd always make a fantasy story, since we never were told anything had to be realistic fiction. Never intentionally, that's just where my brain defaulted to. I can't think of a single realistic fiction idea I haven't scrapped completely.

It's not that I don't like RF, I LOVE reading it. But it's not for me writing.

I also tend to write geared toward Young Adult. Maybe I'll go for MG or New Adult but I think YA is my ballpark.

Outside of fictional writing, I mainly write reviews or analyses of other media.

I don't post these anywhere attached to this pen name, they're mainly just for me and my friends.

I don't need the world to know my opinions, but I need my opinions on paper. I am a writer by nature, so I feel a compulsion, an itch, to write down my thoughts on everything and anything.

And when I have super strong opinions about X media...well I gotta write about it. Whether it's short form reviews of movies, complex reviews of TV shows, rants about X subject, I gotcha.

I'm working hard on a review/analysis right now, so haven't worked on TSP in over a month, which is awful, but I need to reach a stopping point for this project before going back to it. I do think it is a needed break, though, since I find marathoning writing for TSP before needing to take a step back before another marathon.

I also find analyzing media, why I like it, why I don't, what worked, what didn't, helps me in my writing. By examining other works, I realize how I can improve my craft, by either doing something or not doing something or learning from another media. They're intertwined, to me.

I do writing for school, too. Education major and am working on a case study. I actually like it?? Combining two interests is interesting who knew?

Iron Widow

Spoiler alert

I picked up this book praying to god that it would be good because I spend half my life lurking around Xiran Jay Zhao’s TikTok and I didn’t want to let her down by leaving a bad review. I didn’t have to worry. Iron Widow was fucking fantabulous. It was so angry and rightfully so because that world is horrible. The most horrible thing about Huaxia is that different aspects of it are a reality for different women all over the globe. Women and even young girls are still being essentially sold as brides in some parts of the world. In other parts of the world girls are being denied an education. Even in the USA, where I live, which is supposed to be more progressive about women’s rights, women have lost the right to decide what to do with their own bodies in some states and there’s even a movement to take away women’s rights to vote. I still think that, at least from my (admittedly privileged) perspective things can still be solved nonviolently and we’re not quite at the “brutally taking over the country” level yet.

I think the most striking bit of Iron Widow for me was when Zetian realized that the folks from central command and all the soldiers were more scared of her, a woman who had only done what men had been doing for years, than a literal family annihilator. In the USA, all this push back against women’s rights to abortion and rights to vote came after a big feminist movement (#Metoo). All the men in power try to keep women downtrodden because they’re scared of women with power. Just something to think about.

Aside from the obvious feminist aspect of the book, one of the first things that I noticed about Iron Widow was the disability representation. The main character, Wu Zetian, has to use a cane to walk. I feel like physical disability representation, particularly ones that get in the way of every day mobility, are not present in YA literature much unless the book is specifically about the main character overcoming their disability. I was really happy for this type of representation. Finally a disabled character that wasn’t defined by their disability.

Another aspect of Iron Widow that I loved was the historical aspect. For one, all the place names mentioned (Sui-Tang border, Zhou province, and Ming province) were named after historical dynasties of China. I should know, my AP World History teacher made my whole class memorize the dynasties song. It’s been 5 years and it still haunts me in my sleep. Also, Wu Zetian was very clearly based off of the Empress Wu Zetian of the Tang dynasty. The Qin Zheng emperor dude was clearly based off of Shi Huangdi, China’s “first emperor.” Even his tomb in the volcano was like Shi Huangi’s tomb with the terracotta warriors. Rongdi was a word used to refer to certain tribes of people not of Han Chinese descent and the Xianbei tribe was a very important one. I’m sure there are more historical Easter eggs, I just didn’t notice them.

Iron Widow is the first YA book I’ve read that features a polyamorous relationship and I personally love it. I think the dynamics between Yizhi, Shimin, and Zetian are perfect. An added bonus is that I didn’t have to read about some dumb fighting over the girl part or “oh no, who should I choose?” That gets boring fast. Part of me kind of wished that Zetian would have a female love interest so we could read about a lesbian couple overthrowing the patriarchy but alas, we can’t get everything.

I do think that the ending was a bit too easy, though. It feels like it should be harder to take over the country than flying in on a robo-dragon thing, destroying some stuff, and declaring yourself the Iron Empress. I don’t know how I would have written it, though, cause I guess it might be pretty jarring to see this super powerful robo-dragon with super powerful pilots, one of whom hasn’t been seen in over two centuries. It probably would have been pretty hard (and stupid) to try and fight back, still, I’d like to have seen someone try (and more than just by holding hostages).

Characters

Wu Zetian: Zetian did things that I’ve been waiting for YA book characters to do for ages. Her just daring the soldiers to shoot her when they were trying to figure out what to do with her after surviving Li Shimin. Taking advantage of her untouchable position in different situations. That was some bad bitch behavior. I approve. I also like how you can see her character evolving as she realizes the complexities of her world. Like, somehow she becomes more empathetic and more ruthless at the same time. I think it’s because the more she learns about her world and the people around her, the more attachment she develops for some characters (like Shimin) and the more hate she develops for other characters (An Lushan). You also see her will to live increase as she goes from thinking of herself as just another cog in the machine to realizing that she can make a big change.

Li Shimin: I’m probably going to have hordes of angry fans coming at me for this comment, but Shimin was kind of disappointing to me. I think it’s because I was expecting dark humor and wry comments but instead I just got dark and serious. I mean, it makes sense when you consider his backstory, but still I wish we could’ve gotten some humor out of him. Some indication that he feels things other than anger, guilt, or sadness. Of course, that doesn’t mean I didn’t get invested in his fate. No, I’m still desperate to find out if Zetian manages to get him back. I’ll have to wait until December to find out though.

Gao Yizhi: It should come as no surprise to anyone who’s read my past book reviews that Yizhi is my favorite character. I mean, he basically reads as a blueprint for “Pink’s Fictional Crushes,” the rich pretty boy sweetheart with a hidden ruthless side and most importantly that long k-drama/c-drama hair. I’ve gotta say, I was not expecting him to be the comic relief, but he kind of was. I mean, some of his lines were just golden “you can’t shoot me; I’m rich!!” The only thing that kind of disappoints me about Yizhi is that he doesn’t seem like a strong character. I mean, he clearly is because it definitely takes a strong character to pew pew laser beam their dad, but for most of the story, he was kind of just Zetian’s fanboy. I’m really hoping in the next book we see more of his personality separate from Zetian.

Omgg this is such a good question... (when he was alive) he definitely didn't have the attention span nor the time to watch any tv show but I can soo see him learning manipulation tactics by binging big brother and survivor when he was in middle school if he'd gotten to 21 he would have 100% been cast on big brother (not survivor he would kill himself 2 hours in). Favourite movies🤔 i would say the babysitter (reshaped his personality), scream, after(😭). He probably would have enjoyed horror movies a lot but i can't see him ever choosing the movies he saw or caring about that, he'd just watch whatever the person he was with picked. Also he loved over dramatic ya romance movies cause of course he did.

As a vampire he doesn't watch or read anything at all, there are only so many hours in the night and he's busyyyy though it'd be fun and cute if he ever got to rewatch one of his favourite movies for the first time again❤️

And his fave social media would have been tiktok cause he had like a million followers on there. There are so many plot holes in my story specifically because of this but it's staying it's true it's who he is(was)

🍕: How does an OC spend a lazy day?

Mhh🤔 the only thing he'd ever do alone would be go to the beach and swim, otherwise he'd always find someone to bother. If diamila was miraculously not working then they'd go clubbing (and hunting) together, sneaking into rich people events or locations, convincing her to wreck havoc wherever they go (she would strongly regret listening to him but he's a very hard person not to listen to). If Imesh was free and/or alive then that'd be the only time where he would actually be willing to do nothing, just lazing around together (under the condition he lets him drink medically concerning amounts of blood from him). If he's alone then he's spending the whole night at clubs or hooking up with random people off apps just to drink way more blood than he actually needs. Vtm vampires need to completely drain their victims in order to be fully satiated, but Elias doesn't know that so he just keeps eating and eating (until he drains Imesh to death and #realises)

there are huge swaths of these books that i find unappealing because they are YA fiction (I’m not interested in reading about teenagers right now) or poorly written (some of those fantasy genre books... yikes) or i just don’t care for the genre as a whole like with the romance books. but a LOT of “tiktok” books are just popular fiction and books chosen trope first that take traditional publishers by surprise.

if i had to recommend “tiktok” popular books i would suggest throwing your money at those smaller up and coming lgbtq+ writers first and then just checking what overlaps with the booker prize list if you’re not interested in doing your research.

but like come on, people are reading enough that there is an almost 10% increase on the publishing industry, and we’re making fun of them for having bad taste? it literally does not effect you- learn to curate where you find recommendations from, build a bridge, and get over it.

Ok. As we head into the final seasons of the year, here’s where I predict the Booktok/Booktube/Book twitter drama phases going. The hot takes weather forecast, if you will:

Right now things are still pretty entrenched in a conversation about privilege and industry plants in publishing, but up next is for sure going to be a return of the Classics vs YA fight. It’s the start of the school year in a lot of places, so the kids going back to college are going to want to romanticize the start of the semester, so we’ll get a surge of #DarkAcademia/#LightAcademia/Etc content followed by a wave of ‘why that’s bad actually’, part of which will for sure involve a fight over Classic Literature because a lot of those #aesthetics involve Classic or Classic-inspired literature, and a good part of Tiktok is always ready to fight over whether Classics are ‘worth it’ and there’s a solid contingency that can’t keep their eyes on their own paper and take other people’s reading preferences as indictments of their own. One person will make a flippant, rude comment about YA, the YA people will strike back and condemn all Classics, and so on. I’m kind of hoping for a new book to cycle into this argument as a weird symbolic touchstone, because I rather enjoyed Crime and Punishment, and want to get another recommendation from the discourse cycles. We will also get a bunch of people feeding into this fight because they got their English class syllabus and it doesn’t have The Hunger Games on it, which is clearly the best book ever written, better than all those stuffy ‘Classics’ so that should propel us through a whole month.

That’s going to segue pretty neatly into the moral purity argument by October. Because at the start, part of the condemnation of #DarkAcademia will involve #Cancelling the long dead authors featured in the #DarkAcademiaAesthetics TikToks either for sins committed in their personal lives or, increasingly as October rolls in, for the content and themes of their books. Because for sure, posing with a pretty edition of Crime and Punishment on stone steps underneath falling leaves means you endorse murder. And October is spooky season, so we’ll also see an uptick in horror recommendations, which will then result in a backlash when people discover that horror books, shockingly, have horrifying things in them. Expect lots of character assassination of horror readers and authors, suggesting that people who read violent content are ‘normalizing’ it or suspicious because reading about it means you want it to happen, and probably accusations that horror literature is ‘exploiting’ ‘real suffering’ even if it’s fictional because things that happen in fiction probably happened to someone somewhere in the world and what if they or one of their family members found it and read it? Expect an argument about trigger warnings that just goes in a circle. (Honestly, I’m not sure what the argument here even is anymore, since StoryGraph has pretty good content warnings, and a lot of modern publications also include them, but people will have the same fight about it because there’s for sure still room for improvement in practice, so they’ll largely be agreeing in principle but doing the thing where they say essentially the same thing with minor variations and get disproportionately angry in comments sections over it.)

And then once Halloween is over we’ll get a slow creeping in of the quantity vs quality argument, as people start panicking about their final counts and try to squeeze in more novellas or short children’s books to inflate it. The Audiobook argument may make an appearance, because someone will suggest that listening to Audiobooks on 3x speed and then not revealing that you’ve done that when people ask how you’ve read 30 books this last month is kind of disingenuous, and people will interpret that as people saying that Audiobooks aren’t ‘real reading’. But the main argument will be if you should track how many books you read in the first place, if setting goals is turning reading into a competition. I expect this to continue through the new year as people start to set their next year goals, by which time we’ll probably cycle back to the start and start fighting about genre vs literary fiction, if last year is any indication.

And to be clear: there will be plenty of variations and micro-drama, and also all of these fights are happening at all times. This is just my weather forecast of what I think will dominate BookTok Drama for the rest of the year. And yes. I said I deleted Tiktok. And I did. But let’s be real, this is really entertaining, and also I actually like all the #DarkAcademiaAesthetics videos. (And other #Aesthetic videos. They’re just…neat and it pleases my brain to watch them. I am willing to wade through the drama for a video of a walk through the forest with a Lord Huron remix over it.) Also, what else are those two expensive pieces of paper on my wall for if not giving me permission to romanticize academia just a little bit, don’t come at me, if you’ve survived the actual nonsense of graduate school you’re allowed to play around with #DarkAcademia, that’s my own hot take.

OH MY BOY. MY DARLING BOY. I am him and he is me. Every time I read the book or watch the movie, I see so much of myself in him (excluding the misogyny). Hence why I cannot treat him with any gentleness nor care. I have to dissect him and see what’s going on in there, because maybe if I can understand him, I can understand myself a bit better too. We should also both go to therapy. That should definitely happen.

(Headcanon: he is autisitc. That’s it that’s the headcanon. I will not be taking any criticism but if you want an explanation just lemme know.

EDIT: I am kicking myself in the face for forgetting this. I also headcanon Maurice as a househusband if/when they can afford it. He just gives off that vibe and I love that for him.)

Alec:

HOLY FUCK DID FORSTER PUT COCAINE IN THIS MAN WHEN HE MADE THIS CHARACTER???? He is my favorite character and my current king blorbo. I want nothing more than a small version of this little lad to carry around in my pocket. I adore him. He’s perfect. Desperately looking for a woman like him in the real world to wifey. I’m in love. I am an Alec Scudder stan first, a lesbian second, and a person third. Maurice has an A+, lesbian approved, shiny gold star, taste in men. The fact that Alec calls himself ‘rough and ugly’ makes me want to sob because he’s NOT. He’s literally a sweetheart and the goodest cutest boy around.

(Headcanons: 100% a wife/husband-guy. Literally loves his spouse more than anything and finds any form of ‘i hate my spouse’ joke stupid. Is definitely a mama’s boy. Also, he likes poetry about nature (Walt Whitman especially) and wants to visit the US some day. He is a total nature nerd and had he had the resources, I swear this man would’ve been a naturalist or something of the like.)

Kitty:

Look. I know there’s barely any information about her in the book and movie. But what if I told you I was in love with her? She stands up to Maurice when he’s being a world-class asshole, and isn’t afraid to chew his ass out in the epilogue for leaving the family (although he was justified in doing so). Something something passionate smart women something something incredibly attractive. Also, because there isn’t a whole lot stated about her in canon, I can go insane and project :)

(Headcanon: the hottest femme lesbian you’ll find in 1910s england ;) )

Clive:

TikTok come get ya mans. Look, I’ll be dead honest I don’t like Clive, but I don’t like the complete villainization of him either. He made a choice many queer men had to make during that time period. I will NEVER dislike Clive because he ended the relationship with Maurice. He was trying to keep himself safe and out of prison.

I WILL HOWEVER hate him for HOW he went about his relationship with Maurice. Throughout the book/movie he dismisses Maurice’s feelings (including when Maurice was expressing suicidal ideation). He treats Maurice as someone who will always be there when he needs him, but does not reciprocate this for Maurice, going so far as to leave Maurice at his estate alone for days at a time like some sort of pet. He isn’t as bothered by the end of their relationship, because for him it was never really THE end. He never expected Maurice to find someone else.

Clive couldn’t love Maurice in the way he needed to be loved, Alec could.

(Headcanon: Clive was incredibly bitter and upset once he realized that Maurice had left for good with Alec. He wouldn’t learn about Alec and Maurice still being together after all these years until Chapman mentions that Ada told him that Kitty (long game of telephone going on here I know) saw Maurice with some man. He’d put two and two together really quick and would probably have another breakdown. Idk. He seems like the type to get pushed over by a strong gust of wind so I wouldn’t put it past him to breakdown over his first love still living happily with someone else, when it could’ve been him.)

shadowban means my ability to reply and send messages just. doesn't exist. and i don't show up in notifications anymore 😭 our chat has disappeared for me at least... and re bookshopping, it's just unenjoyable for me at least. a large quantity of the stock is marketed as 'as seen on tiktok' with tables of ya, colleen hoover and rebranded re/ylo fanfic w stacks underneath because they ordered too much stock and it's not selling as well as expected. there isn't much diversity in the stock either, even in a big city. the same few well-known books and maybe a new release. if i go bookshopping i dip in to see if they have a palahniuk book i've been looking for for months, to look at comics, history books and cookbooks and maybe a drink in the cafe but it's just a bit depressing and anxiety-inducing. it's like when i go cd shopping i'm in and out fast because it's mostly knicknacks; it sells better than physical media. the cds are a small section in the upstairs rather than the downstairs floor like it was a couple years ago... -_- anyway... that's my rant <3

(Spoilers in last two paragraphs)

Like most YA thrillers I read, this is on the more campy side, so if you're looking for something like Sadie by Courtney Summers, this isn't for you. I really like YA thrillers for that campiness, similar to why I love reading cozy mysteries. This one delivered that well, though the "woke" dialogue that popped up now and again took me out at times, though at least some of it is believable.

The narrator, Olivia, is a white, (presumably) straight scholarship student from Maryland attending a school full of the 1%. She's 18, so she's learning about social justice and believes she knows more than many of her classmates, having more real world experience than many of them will face, and she grasps this to give her a feeling of superiority. She needs to be a good person, especially when she helps her friends, The Ivies, sabotage their classmates to get a leg up in the competition to their first choice schools.

It could make Olivia grating to read at times, but for the most part, she was an easy protagonist to sympathize with. She'll need to learn not to babble and keep on a good poker face, though, if she wants to go into investigative journalism (granted, I'm not sure if it was specified what in journalism Olivia wants to focus on).

It was pretty easy to whittle down who the killer was. It wasn't Sierra or Margot, because I was very sure Donne wouldn't make a WOC kill the white girl. If Avery's sexuality had been revealed earlier, she would have been knocked out of the suspect pool also. I wanted it to be Ethan. It would have been more interesting if it had been Ethan, even if I usually hate the "one of the investigators was the killer all along" trope. It would make sense given his backstory, and it could have been an accident he made worse by trying to hide evidence, accidentally incriminating Olivia and helping her to both keep her from suspecting him but also having this internal war for possibly pushing her under a bus meant for him.

After its revealed Tyler did it, I just shrugged, and his speech made me laugh. Like I said, I enjoy YA thrillers for the campiness, but this seemed much. It would have helped if there'd been more hints of his utter disregard for human life. The closest I remember seeing of that was close to the end, where Olivia learns he'd written his college essay about how quarantine had given him time to learn more about himself, help delivery drivers by tipping them, and gain TikTok followers, and that's pretty generic "blinded by his own privilege" stuff. I did like how smug he is through the trials, safe in the knowledge people with his kind of money can easily get away with murder with little more than a slap on the wrist (though it's a bit different in this case, since while not as rich as the Monteforts and St. Clairs, Emma's family is rich, too, so they can play the game of media too, if they'd wanted, but it sounds like they'd pretty much disappeared after cleaning out Emma's dorm room).

Overall it was a fun read, and I added Donne's other YA thriller book to my TBR to see how she'd grown as a writer, since the skill is there.

Someone clearly forgot that communication is key to any relationship

“Nuh-uh. This is a Hallmark movie. Or a poorly written young adult novel. That will not sell well. Olive, tell Malcolm to keep his day job, he’ll never make it as a writer.” (pp. 314)

Normally I avoid popular books, since it gives me quite a lot of stress. Everyone is gushing over how amazing it is, and maybe I don’t think the same. 

Also, this book has one of those “The TikTok Sensation!” blobs on the front cover. Why can’t it just be a sticker I can take off. It’s frustrating. 

I don’t like to follow all the trends, however, I just had to read this one, since I heard rumors of some very spicy scenes. It is clear where my priorities lie. 

To refer back to the quote, this book was full of clichés. An emotionally scarred woman, who is trying to be independent, falls in love with a tall, dark, mysterious, grumpy man. They are student and professor and they start fake-dating so her best friend feels free to start a relationship of her own. Don’t worry though, she is just dating a professor on campus, not her professor. That would be questionable. 

Anyways, along the way they fall in love, some drama happens, there is a happy ending - not really a spoiler, it’s a YA novel. 

There is not much to tell, the book is pretty straightforward and full of clichés so you can pretty much guess what is going to happen next. It is still a book I would recommend, though. It may not have the best writing style, or the best plot, but it is the epitome of a feel-good book. If you see past some minor cringe over the dumb decisions and clichés, it is a book that makes you laugh and root for the characters to hook up.

Also, there are fun science facts, because the author is a scientist herself. Badass.

I'm so listening to ever now when I get the chance!

I don't really remember how I got into lotm to be honest, let me think... At first I saw the Chinese webnovel cover back like years ago when I was reading on the webnovel app, read the summary, and got too confused by it and couldn't piece together what it could mean and just thought that it was my lacking language so I left it. A friend recommended it to me but I just couldn't get into it.

Then I forgot about it till like late 2022 where I started getting webnovel recs on tiktok, mostly orv iirc, but I felt like it was too much and too heavy for me at that stage in my life. Also thought the tarot club were some god group of antagonists with Mr fool as the leader who are just too op from the official art and fanart and that the story was pretty much the protagonist being beating up a lot and I didnt like that lol.

Also thought zhou mingrui and Klein were a double Mc situation lol.

But in April of 2023 I started getting tiktoks of all sorts of lotm content like memes, animatics, and edits, and you know how good those edits can be right? ^>^

So not knowing anything but the fact that I like the hidden identity and misunderstandings trope as well as having a thing for pretty people *ahem*Audrey, amon, Leonard, fors, Klein, and mingrui *ahem* I found a PDF, downloaded a reading app, and got to it. And then here we are, waiting for coi to finish because I don't like waiting for chapters to come out, waiting can make me lose interest lol

I hear ya on the waiting for chapters. Like, I got used to it with fics and manhwas, but not used with webnovels, weirdly enough. Maybe it's easier for me to remember for something I'm already familiar with. Meanwhile, with legit books, you have to reorient yourself each time. At least, that's what I noticed when I wanted to read part 2 of TCF. Tried it, but ehhhhh, I left it to simmer after I reached chapter 100. I really couldn't keep track of the new characters while reading chapter by chapter. So yeah, also waiting for COI :)

SMUT in YA

I've been seeing this conversation all over social media recently. Young women mostly posting about how SMUT should absolutely NOT be in YA. Usually with some funny little "shh, shh" as they wink at the camera, or a silly "tell me why" face as if they're expecting people in the comments to out themselves as pedophiles.

But here's the thing...I'd really like these people to define smut, and maybe drop some examples of it that they think they're finding in YA.

And I know kids who define themselves as asexual, but that designation in itself says something about sexuality." Andrew Smith

I'm sure we can all agree books made especially for teenagers should not be pornographic. Nobody is arguing that. But also, what is YA?

Is it any book with a main character who is a teenager?

Because some of my favorite authors (like the above, Andrew Smith) have said they don't write for kids, they write for readers. I had the honor of hearing him speak, and he talked about how his books had gotten banned (something that is happening all too frequently now) and that the reason most of his characters are teen boys is because that's the time of his life where his emotions were at their height. That's where all the drama was.

But let's get back to sex. Or as BookTok is calling it now, SMUT.

Smut is an almost silly word when you're talking about guilty pleasure books with your adult friends, but when used to describe YA it most defiantly is a hard negative. And here's why.

Kids should be protected.

We all know this.

We all get this.

But from what exactly? Why are books the first to be censored?

I have yet to see a TikTok, or parent at a school board meeting argue on why kids shouldn't be reading about genocide.

Deogratias, A Tale of Rwanda, is a graphic novel on my high school library shelves and has never been challenged.

"Well, it's real!" you could argue. (And believe me, people do. argue that. As if sex is a made-up thing.)

It's history, so it should be represented. And you know - I agree.

However, the first time I read Deogratias, it was so disturbing, it made me nauseated. I cried on my way home from work that day. Whenever I see the book, I still get a sick feeling in my belly. And that's OKAY. It's a story with graphic visual depictions of rape and murder and dismemberment. These things happened. So, it's on the shelf.

My students read The Bluest Eye, by Toni Morrison, Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler, not to mention Shakespeare, Stephen King, and texts on slavery and every American War.

But the sex-ed books were pulled from my shelves this year.

Books that say sex can be good and safe, if you're informed.

The rape books stayed of course.

I can't help but wonder if the difference is female pain vs. pleasure.

Now we have these TikTokers. As if conservative school boards aren't loud enough.

But what could be wrong with wanting to keep "smut" out of kids books?

Save the kids!

We heard this when they wanted to integrate schools. SAve the kids!

We heard this when they wanted to deny gay marriage. SAve the kids!

It seems like everyone wants to "Save the Kids" when it's something as simple as keeping them ignorant.

Cause here's the thing...What is smut?

If we remove every book from the high school that has sex in it. Is that enough?

What about books where a person debates losing their virginity?

That would probably be a pretty useful thing for a teenager to read about, but is that smut?

If we take out the sex, but only the good sex, mind you, do we also take out hand jobs? Blow jobs? Oh... it's ALL sex. ALL SEX IS SMUT. Okay, what about a book in which a girl looks over her naked body in a mirror? That's body image, but is that too much?

What about books on health? What to expect as you grow? Body changes?

What about books on menstral cycles, and nocturnal ejaculations?

We can't have the kids knowing too much!

And while we're at it....the queer books too.

They're sexual by nature right?

Let me just remind the younger ones. The ones who think they're liberal, but are perfectly fine with the rallying cry of "KEEP SMUT OUT OF YA".

Cause I can tell you, that's where it always starts. With a vague definition of morality, and censorship for the kids.

I would like to understand what books you're really worried about.

Would a child reading about sex before they're ready cause them more mental trauma then reading about teen suicide? Because I've been a YA librarian for over a decade and have yet to read what I'd call smut in any young adult book. To be fair, I have read about sexual exploration. Body image. Consent. Non-consent. Incest. Love. Rage. Friendships. Family. Infatuation. Hope.

This is life! Young adults are just that; they're burgeoning on adulthood, and books are a safe place. Even scary books. This is where they should learn- in their libraries.

I find this infatuation with the inherent perverseness of sex so purely American puritanical, that the only way sex is allowed in the library is if it's traumatic.

Boys in books talking about rape culture is a lesson/ girls in books learning how to masturbate is smut. Why must someone be punished for it to be permissible? Why must we flagellate ourselves as if we're still in the dark ages?

Because I promise you, this is us taking the fast track back to the days where women weren't even allowed to check out biology books.

First, we "protect" kids. Then we "protect" women. Then only those in charge decide what is "need to know".

Fight the real problem in society. Cause it's not the books.
