Look, I love Jon as much as the next person but I think some of you have gone so far along the ‘Jon is a sad little man who did nothing wrong’ route that you’ve genuinely forgotten all the times he held power in a situation or like. Made a decision that hurt people

“Well Doc? What do you think? Can I pull off your look?”
This was prompted by a cute idea my friend and I were talking about where Rivet tries on Starline’s coat and he adjusts and fixes it for her because she didn’t put it on right.
But uh— then I went overboard and wanted to see if she could pull off his entire look, so, let’s just say hypothetical-villain-Rivet has been born!
Starline’s more just stunned that what’s going on in front of him somehow works.

I don’t know if people are personally underestimating Marisha as if she doesn’t know her character better than literally everyone else judging her because now it seems to Imodna shippers that if one of the actors of the characters of the ship is personally getting in the way of the ship they’ve wanted since literally episode 1 they just don’t care what Marisha has to say anymore…but this is the same person who played a canonical hardcore lesbian as Beau in Mighty Nein who flirted with Yasha, had a crush on Jester, slept with Keg and Reani, moved past her crush on Jester into a solid friendship, and begun dating Yasha all while never forming romantic interest for Veth.
Some Imodna shippers are really outing themselves with the “sisters” debate that they straight up don’t care about annihilating or reducing Laudna’s characterization to solely being Imogen’s clutch and it’s quite disrespectful to everything Marisha’s created and portrayed with Laudna.
The whole Imodna ship from fans to me feels and seems like it’s to bolster Imogen but restrain and confine Laudna. I like Laudna as a character, and I prefer her character over Imogen’s completely. To me, Laudna always felt like she was vicariously living through Imogen as a mentor through the sorcery connection, trying to provide Imogen a better life for herself since she convinced herself society would never accept her. But boy do I wish every now and then someone would look at Laudna and ask her “what do you want in life for yourself?” It feels like she spent 30 years of her second life with Delilah in hiding doing nothing and that her second resurrection in a restored and revitalized Whitestone (which is so poetic btw) severed her from Delilah (hopefully) and did to some degree heal Laudna as we see with her changed form of dread feature.
It’s fascinating to see Laudna’s third life begin with healing from trauma, comfort from friends, and endless possibility as this is finally her chance for the life SHE WANTS. Not the one her parents forced on her, not the one Delilah stole from her, not the one Delilah forced her to endure, not one lived vicariously through another, but finally a life Laudna will actively choose to chase and follow her dreams. I like this arc for her. I love seeing Laudna mold and branch out forming friendships with others. I love the internal complexity of her character: not accessing the romance feelings of her brain in thirty years, but seeming to be fascinated by Ira to fight Ashton for drinks and conversation first, not having a menstruation cycle anymore but absolutely adoring children every chance she gets possibly mourning a future that was taken from her, confessing after the temple fight that she was angry and the townspeople didn’t need to carry the burden they were privy to. These are all interesting elements of her character that so easily get tossed aside by a large chunk of the fandom because they want her to do nothing but cater to Imogen’s needs.
In my opinion, Laudna and Fearne’s friendship is a much healthier and friendlier dynamic to explore and watch than that of Laudna and Imogen. Maybe it’s just the way I’ve perceived the friendship to be one-sided with Laudna as the Giver, and Imogen as the Receiver but I really don’t like the way Imogen treats Laudna sometimes. I know the rock fight on the Skyship was “angst angst angst” but clearly it was Delilah puppeteering Laudna’s body and Imogen’s first reaction was to blame Laudna and then be mad about it for several days to which she still hasn’t actually apologized about nor ever asked Laudna what happened to her and how she felt about it. And no, I don’t count the gifts as thoughtful apologies. Look at how easily Imogen parted with the ToT holder in the Feywild. And how about exposing her disregarded and forgotten name to the group without permission while Laudna was dead. I personally view that as a bit disrespectful because I’m a relatively private person myself, I wouldn’t want someone revealing personal information about me to people when I’m literally not there to interject whether it’s okay or not.
For me, Imogen doesn’t really seem to care about Laudna’s feelings to the same level that Laudna cares about Imogen’s feelings. Imogen doesn’t prioritize what Laudna wants to the same level Laudna prioritizes what Imogen wants.
Sidebar: If Marisha gave Laura permission about the name reveal, than okay, it’s a story after all. It was resolved in-game anyways even if there wasn’t outside discussion about it beforehand. Do I still personally prefer to have learned about the previous name information differently? Yes. Perhaps from Laudna herself in the way Caleb told M9, yeah. It’s the same view I have with 4SD: information that should be revealed in-game is done so outside of game and then those outside discussions end up weaving back in-game to suddenly everyone knows about Orym’s husband big moon-little moon despite that being a private conversation, and Ashton’s parentage being revealed in a personal vision and despite it not being vocally spoken about between characters all the characters somehow in-game now know he was Aasimar-half elf before being turned earth genasi. Look, your audience knows your characters use the restroom, you don’t need to roleplay that, but Ashton’s lineage feels like a big plot arc being explored that deserves its own reveal respectively. So it’s unfortunate we likely won’t get those moments on screen because for the cast they can blend over the rough groves of meta leaking into their game by saying “that conversation totally happened in private during this-and-that.” Which sucks from an audience character-narrative viewpoint, where we tend to get more of those “changing of the tide” revelation moments in other storying telling narrative medias like books and scripted television that we unfortunately will lose.
Idk, maybe it’s delving into analysis of character love languages at this point, but what I’m trying to say is that I can see and feel that Laudna clearly cares about Imogen while I don’t see or feel Imogen’s side of the friendship being returned or invested on the same level of maintenance. It more so feels that Imogen is afraid of losing her life-raft while out at sea and she’ll have to depend for herself like she did in Gelvaan prior Laudna. So for now, I’m going to take Laudna’s word that it’s on a sibling kin level of her being the big sister/second mom of the household caring and feeling responsible for a much much younger, bratty, spoiled little kid sister who tends to take for granted and neglect those around her until she’s left alone all grown up finally having to fend for herself for the first time in her life and is realizing how she mistreated and used everyone. That makes a lot more sense to me over the concept of Laudna being blindly and unknowingly in utter and complete love for Imogen when she’s explicitly stated her brain hasn’t expressed romantic feelings for 30 years.
Because hey, this is the same cast member and actress that portrayed Beau’s feelings and Keyleth’s epic love story with Vax while having the most Platonic female-male friendship with Percy. And Imogen’s cast member and actress is the same woman who portrayed Vex’s feelings for her brother, her love for Percy, and her short term resentment and hatred turned friendship-sisterly love for Keyleth while also portraying Jester’s crush for Fjord as a wife trying to romance her husband’s character in a silly little game of dnd.
Which at the end of the day, is all that it is. So let’s give the actors credit and respect where they deserve it instead of prioritizing two characters’ shippable aesthetics by knocking and reducing everything else down in the way to get fandom’s fanon canonized as quick as possible for fan validation of “I knew it!” or “I was right!” or god forbid the dreaded “it’s what we deserve!” It’s their story, let them tell it their way and on their timeline. If certain ships happen, they happen. If they don’t, they don’t. There’s no need to attack the cast or scrutinize what they say/do as baiting for viewership ever.
#critical role#cr3e62#critical role discourse#cr discourse#cr laudna#laudna#I think what I’m trying to say with my sidebar is that C1 and C2 roleplay was more anchoring#c3 roleplay definitely feels like a group of friends playing a game and maybe that’s why I personally can’t find a connection to the C3 PCs#which isn’t a bad thing btw. CR paves a path towards a new style of story narration hopefully more people become open to consume#a lot of my favorite memories of CR is ultimately heavy roleplay moments with bittersweet combat that builds roleplay potential#I think my personal preference is roleplay > combat. but I do love mid-combat banter. or combat reveals that lead to roleplay moments#Laudna could be aro/ace and that is a great story to explore#c3 is the first campaign I get to watch live with live fandom reaction#and boy oh boy has fandom altered how I feel about bells hells versus had I just watched#solo with zero opinion input from fandom#like part of being a part of fandom is fan interaction and the shipping side is so uptight majority of the time#I’m a non-shipper for c3 as I was while watching c1 and c2#vaxleth is the only couple I was and have been compelled by#that didn’t make me hate Gilmore or Kashaw. which were moments I actually really liked#characters can be and should more than just their relationship that they’re involved in#maybe I just personally prefer no romance this campaign because it feels like these characters specifically are using dating as therapy.#instead of y’know. getting therapy and healing from their trauma in a healthy manner.#Percy took a bit to heal before getting with Vex officially. Liam and Matt stated Caleb & Essek work on themselves prior to dating#majority of c3 popular ships feel like Pikelan to me. sure they may be cute for a bit but are better off as friends in the long term#and definitely should not be allowed to name children. wilhand’ildan#I hope Wilhand’ildan goes by Wilan/Willan/Willian for short

Main character privilege has its perks and its downsides, one of those downsides being that it constantly gets you into rough situations and also it pisses off your boss. Xelra’s probably not allowed to leave the Greyhunter base for a while

leshy! ( or deathcards and you! )
or a strange analyzation on leshy, and his deathcards.
this is another long post, just so you’re warning, but leshy! i’m extremely fond of him. maybe it’s all the time i’ve spent, embarrassingly, in kaycee’s mod, but i adore his character. but i can’t help but keep thinking about act one, especially after i fucked up my runs and didn’t know story events depending on deaths, and not runs. my bad.
( another fair warning: this is going to be me, as usual, over-analyzing dialogue for a total of maybe two people and myself, and whoever else is still clinging to this game like i am. )
but what i’m referring to is his attitude towards the player. inscryption is an odd one, considering we have luke carder as a player but it’s also acknowledged in kaycee’s mod that we, us, myself and whoever reading, are also the player.
leshy sounds, for lack of a better word, soft at the start of inscryption. i know that sounds odd, but i see it in how he talks to the player. behold, act one dialogue!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“ fear not “ implies that he thought you’d be worried, though, seeing from your deck and how the game is progressing, you probably have already figured that your cards don’t leave you deck anyway. he’s still telling you though. even for a tutorial, he tries to be more forgiving than he really needs to be for the player. but that’s not what’s majorly differently.
deathcards! yeah, i’m talking about them again, and they’ll take a major focal point, since i think they’re some of the most telling details about leshy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i find it interesting that he specifically uses favor, when you don’t really have a choice when it comes down to it, and the entirety of the next sentence. yes, in hindsight, deathcards are only a creation he made, but he doesn’t need to continue to make them whatsoever. it shows that it’s his choice to create them, to put a memory and use to you outside of this isolated run.
and the use of “ we. “ he even says as such, that it’s you and leshy working together to create it, rather than leshy deciding the entirety of it for you, which he has done ( assuming from the scrybes since we don’t know much about how he took over inscryption ) and could do again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but, as resets go by, especially if you win against him instead of dying, he starts to become . . . more aggressive. it’s noticeable in his endgame dialogue, which i don’t have on hand, but as you best him over and over without progressing, he starts to grow frustrated with you. he gets angry when you refuse to eat ( even though we can’t, but still, it’s much more straightforward upset than ever before ) he seems more disheartened when you destroy the moon, but what i find most revealing is the deathcards.
Tumblr media
leshy says himself that to live as a beast is the most honorable fate he can see, both in act two and as he admits after winning against him without progressing, and how he doesn’t mean for the scrybes to feel trapped to this fate. of course, it’s completely reasonable they would—they’re contained in cards, and were put into them by force—but to leshy, this is the highest fate he could give them, a place on his board, to serve as a beast. he also does this to kaycee through a deathcard, and we can see from entries in kaycee’s mod that him and her became good friends. these deathcards are, inadvertently, a sign of respect to him.
Tumblr media
even if you fail, even if you trip flat on your face, leshy still finds it worth to immortalize you because you tried, and at least if you look through the awareness of the player’s eyes, knowing the challenger is the same person, it makes the finale that much more satisfying. when you initially fail to him, that’s what he feels—a sense of respect because not only are you the first challenger that he’s seen in who knows how long, but you tried, and that’s valuable.
after you dying, you can choose, though from a limited selection, what stats you have, your sigils, your cost, your name. and then, you’ll be a card people can pick from forever. for as long as the copy of the game exists, people can see your card and know your name. you’re a beast, now. you’ve achieved the highest status he can give you.
and then, look at the card you’re given if you win. it’s plain. you can’t chose your stats. sure, you’re a rare card, but you’re only asked your name. and if you look to the door, you can see that you can’t even read your name. i thought, initially, the number one medal would go up depending on how many times you have beaten him prior—like a counter of when you won—but, no. it stays. it’s the exact same for each deathcard. you won, but it’s a sour fate to him, and reflects his feelings to you. you can’t be used. no one can even see your name, just that you won, and what happens to people who win.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
with the dialogue you get during the deletion, if you chose him and still chose him for the final duel, along with just the heart-ripping “ please, we don’t need to keep score “ makes me feel as though he’s gained respect for the player, and genuinely had a great time playing his version of inscryption with you and trying to make you live. trying to give you a life and enjoyment even if he’s limited in the power he truly had to show you that. he values you as a person, as a challenger, and as a player in general, just as he values the scrybes.
i wish the scrybes saw that, too, that leshy’s respect for them is reflected in the way that he still made them cards even if they were hidden, that they’re still playable when he could’ve degraded them to much worse. it doesn’t make their fate better, and it doesn’t make what he did better, either, but it’d be nice to know that he still cares, despite what he’s done.
i just like how his respect and emotions towards you as the challenger are reflected through deathcards, and the fact he values them so much that his signature ambience track is literally called “ deathcard cabin. “
and, as an off note, since i wanted to say this too but didn’t want to break the odd flow, he reveals more about himself the more you win, after you win, without progressing. i’m not sure why? you could take it as caving in, or emotions, but i find it interesting as well.
so yeah. dnd with a tree.

Jasmine: (Grins and sits straight) “Columbus sailed the ocean blue!”
Danse: “Robert?”
MacCready: (Still waking up and rubbing his face) “Hm?”
Danse: “When an apple fell out of the tree and landed on Issac Newton, what did it teach him?”
MacCready: (Scratches his head) “To sit someplace else?”
Danse: (Folds his arms) “It taught him gravity. Which he defined using mathematics.” (Turns next to the only other actual student) “Jasmine?”
Jasmine: “Yeah?”
Danse: “If you have ten cookies and someone takes away half, what will they have?”
Jasmine: (Makes a limp hand motion) “A broken hand.”
Danse: “No!”
Jasmine: (Takes out a knife) “They will if they try to take my cookies!”
Danse: (Rubs his head) “They aren’t trying to take your cookies.”
Jasmine: (Puts her hands on her hips) “Well that’s what you said.”
Danse: (Heavy sigh) “That’s not what I-… Oh just forget it.”
Jasmine: (Puts down her knife) “Alright.”
Danse: (Rubs his chin, flipping through the books) “Now, where was I?”
Jasmine: (Shrugs) “I don’t know, you told me to forget.”
Danse: (Shakes his head) “Moving on.”
(I was watching Animaniacs and this one scene was just too perfect. Deacon is the one to burst out into the multiplication song)
