When Records Are Broken
Estrela de Fura and the Future of Mozambique Rubies
February 2024
Several years ago, I penned an article entitled “Are Ruby Prices Justified.” The essence of the article explained that fine, gem quality rubies are exceedingly rare and that nothing can change the natural economics involved. Different natural elements must combine to create a gorgeous red hue, and this practically ensures their great rarity. There are only a few locations in the entire world that have been blessed with such minerals.
Followers of my writings- and all sophisticated gem connoisseurs for that matter- appreciate that Myanmar (previously called Burma) is the prime source of such fabled rubies. In fact, the Myanmar origin has developed into a brand name of sorts. Just the mention of a ruby with this origin conjures images of royalty, maharajas, and some of the world’s most famous gemstones. Rubies are exceptionally rare to begin with, but modern science has found the secret sauce that makes the Myanmar variety so mesmerizing. Such rubies exhibit a natural fluorescence which combines with the red color to create a specific color tone often referred to as “pigeon’s blood” within the trade.
However, as this source has been mined for centuries, its yields have become increasingly smaller and lower in quality. The collectors and consumers seeking ultra fine rubies, have been searching for alternative sources and rubies from Mozambique have become increasingly popular and sought after. In fact, a few global jewelry retailers now exclusively offer rubies from Mozambique. Myanmar is simply not presenting the market with enough rubies for these retailers with large volumes of high-end sales. An added challenge is the sporadic political instability in Myanmar. Large volume, global retailers must feed their constant appetite for stones, or consumers will simply dine elsewhere, and so many have now switched their focus to Mozambique.
Some of the Mozambique specimens have underlying secondary colors that detract from their collectability. Brown and other earth tones tend to give rubies a garnet like color- a semiprecious gem that trades at a small fraction of a fine ruby. However, occasionally, the stars are aligned and an absolute one of kind ruby is unearthed in Mozambique.
It has a Portuguese name, Estrela de Fura, or Star of Fura. Fura is the company that unearthed this once in a generation ruby. A massive 101 carat rough was found about a year ago, and the gem world collectively gasped for breath. It’s phenomenally rare to find a rough of this size, but in this case, all experts agreed that the quality of this ruby is ultra fine. After much debate and analysis, the ruby lost almost 50% of its original weight and yielded a 55 carat, one of a kind, ultra fine specimen.
Brilliant Stars routinely cuts color gemstone rough to lose even 75% of its original weight. The goal is to achieve the most perfect gemstone possible while keeping your investment and rough purchase price profitable. However, with such important gems, every single carat you lose in cutting could be US $1Mil+ in losses. Imagine the pressure on the artisan cutter who is tasked with such decisions!
In the case of Estrella de Fura, the magic weight was 55.22 carats. Having seen the gem in person, I couldn’t believe my eyes. With colors that are luscious red with slight purple/ pink undertones, this African ruby looks very much like its Asian counterpart. But what makes this gem legendary is the natural fluorescence that it exhibits. Gems from Mozambique rarely have this added color effect- Truly a once in a generation find. The final bid at auction sold this legendary ruby or US $34.8mil, or US $630,288 per carat. A remarkable albeit justified record for any color gemstone at auction.
It is futile to fight the laws of nature and it is obvious that an ever-increasing majority of high-end ruby sales will be of Mozambique origin. Estrela de Fura’s sale, and at a record price for that matter, greatly solidifies this fact. Mozambique rubies have now been officially crowned and have arrived. Collectors and consumers now have the greatest affirmation possible that Mozambique rubies are the future and must be respected like their Myanmar counterparts.
Behold Estrela de Fura in all its glory!

The Fiery Red Ruby - By Far The Most Precious Gem stone of All
The very finest, excellent ruby is so rare it has been the earth's most valued gemstone for hundreds of years. In reality, even today, flawless top quality rubies tend to be more valuable and rare than good quality colorless diamonds. A 16 carat ruby sold at auction for US$227,301 per carat at Sotheby's in 1988. A 27.37 carat Burmese ruby ring sold for US$4 million at Sotheby's in Geneva in May 1995, or $146,145 per carat. A 32 carat ruby sold for US$144,000 per carat at Sotheby's in 1989. In contrast, eight D-color internally flawless diamonds over 50 carats were bought from days gone by 9 years along with the largest, a pear-shape of 102 carats, fetched only US$125,000 per carat. Top rubies are extremely rare perhaps the world's top gem dealers must incessantly comb through wealthy estate sales and auctions to discover them. Clean bright stones in sizes above five carats are particularly rare. Ruby will be the gem quality kind of the mineral corundum, then one of the very durable minerals which exists, a crystalline type of aluminum oxide. Corundum features a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale and it is extremely tough. Rolling around in its common form, corundum is even utilized as an abrasive. Colors of Corundum aside from red are known as Sapphire. The element Chromium accounts for the red colorization of the gem, but an excessive amount of Chromium can actually turn corundum emerald green coloured. Heat treatment is very common in ruby gemstones (as is true for all types of corundum) which is utilized to dissolve "silk" inclusions, which results in an even more transparent, more intensely colored stone. The heat treatment methods are considered permanent and usually detract from value of the stone. The most famous way to obtain fine rubies is Burma, that's now called Myanmar. The ruby mines of Myanmar are more than history: stone age and bronze age mining tools have been found in the mining section of Mogok. Rubies through the legendary mines in Mogok will have a pure red colorization, that is described as "pigeon's-blood" although that term is more fanciful than an actual practical standard in the trade today. Myanmar also produces intense pinkish red rubies which can be also vivid and intensely beautiful. Many of the rubies from Burma have a strong fluorescence when confronted with ultraviolet rays like those who work in sunlight, which layers on extra color. Burma rubies possess a standing of holding their vivid color under all lighting conditions.
Tumblr media
Fine rubies will also be present in Thailand. Thai rubies tend to be darker red in tone: a real red, tending toward burgundy as an alternative to pink, as Burma rubies do. This may cause them extremely popular in america where consumers generally prefer their rubies to become darker red as opposed to a darker pink. Some Thai rubies have black reflections, a phenomenon called extinction, which can make their color look darker than it actually is. But Thai rubies could also have a rich vivid red that rivals the Burmese in intensity. Sri Lankan rubies can also be very beautiful. Many Sri Lankan stones tend to be pinkish in hue and lots of are pastel in tone. Some, however, resemble the vivid pinkish red hues from Burma. Rubies from Kenya and Tanzania surprised the world once they put together in the sixties his or her color rivals the earth's best. Unfortunately, most of the ruby production out there countries has several inclusions, tiny flaws which diminish transparency. Rubies in the African mines are not transparent enough to facet. However, their fantastic color is displayed to full advantage when cut cabochon style. A couple of rare clean stones have been seen which can be top quality. The most important factor in value of a ruby is color. The superior qualities are as red as you can imagine: a saturated pure spectral hue without overtones of brown or blue. An intense pure, red color, uniform color is among the most valuable gem. Clarity can be of secondary importance, however a fine colored gem with slight flaws remains to be treasured. Large sizes rubies are more rare than diamond plus a valuation on fine gem ruby increases significantly (more so than other gems) with increased weight. The saying red is derived from the Latin for ruby, ruber, which is produced by similar words in Persian, Hebrew, and Sanskrit. The intensity of hue of a superb ruby looks like a glowing coal, by far the most intensely colored substance our ancestors ever saw. It is no wonder they ascribed magical powers to these fires that burned perpetually and don't extinguished themselves. After color, the opposite factors which influence the value of a ruby are clarity, cut, and size. Rubies which are perfectly transparent, without having tiny flaws, tend to be more valuable than others with inclusions which can be visible to the eye. Cut can produce a huge difference in how attractive and lively a ruby appears to the eye. A well-cut stone should reflect back light evenly through the surface with out a dark or washed-out area in the center that will result from a stone that is certainly too deep or shallow. The contour ought to be symmetrical where there shouldn't be any nicks or scratches within the polish. Ruby sometimes displays a three-ray, six-point star. These star rubies are cut in a smooth domed cabochon cut to display the effect. The star is the most suitable visible when illuminated having a single light source: it moves across the stone since the light moves. This effect, called asterism, is caused by light reflecting off tiny rutile needles, called "silk," that happen to be oriented over the crystal faces. The need for star rubies and sapphires are influenced by two things: the intensity and fantastic thing about one's body color and also the strength and sharpness in the star. All six legs needs to be straight and equally prominent. Star rubies rarely possess the combination of a good translucent or transparent color as well as a sharp prominent star. These gems are valuable and dear. For more info about ruby do tu nhien see our new internet page.

You’re Buying Fancy Jewelry Wrong
  It Is the perfect

Time to buy something important for a special person--you know, show them you
care
  Jewelry is an
Intensely personal way to express style, even for guys.  (Do not attempt to tempt
your tweed-wearing friend with an Apple Watch--that he will recoil.)   If you have someone in your life with even the barest shred of personal design, approach
the job with eyes wide open and ears curled toward every hint of
preferences that float your own way.
 It is possible
To win this challenge. It only requires some effort.
 The primary thing
Is to understand what you do not know.  I met Fiona Druckenmiller at her Upper East
Side store to  seek her best suggestions for buying gemstones. She's got
credibility: As one of the multibillion-dollar Druckenmiller fortune, she presides over FD Gallery, a six-story townhouse full treasures from
the likes of Société Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels Inc., JAR,
Verdura, Hemmerle, and Viren Bhagat.  Walk through the heavy,
double-door portal site and you will find yourself amid glittering things worth
thousands and thousands of dollars .  Her clients include Upper East Side
doyennes and French financiers to youthful, Asian entrepreneurs and Italian
barons.
 Druckenmiller
Wants to make it obvious:"Just because you've purchased an engagement ring doesn't
mean you know how to purchase gemstones."  It's sound advice, and a great place to
start.  Here is what else you want to learn if you are in the marketplace for some
seriously elaborate jewelry.
You can't eyeball qualityDo you know the
Gap between heated and unheated rubies?  Would you see an emerald that has
been oiled, vs. one which includes no oil?  Probably not. But these enhancements
greatly alter the value of stones.
 "People have
Been heating stones for hundreds of years to boost the colour," Druckenmiller
says.  "But a Burma ruby that's unheated is going to be worth 10 or 20 times up to a heated blossom from Africa."
 In Terms of emeralds,
Many have small fissures inside them, because emerald can be brittle.  Jewelers
often use oil to make the cracks less observable.  So an emerald with no oil will
obviously be much more valuable than one that has been altered.
 "It is not
Some thing you can look at and tell," says Druckenmiller.  "People just don't
understand.  It is not that they are wrong to buy them.  It is only inexperience."
Find out which kind of quality you're dealing with is to ask, simply and
straight.  Question the seller as to where the gem originated and how it's been handled. Request to see the certificate documents.  And bring along an

established a promotion campaign called"Real is infrequent" to emphasize the importance
of real stones and to bolster business, particularly one of millennials.)
 For Example,
Mikimoto sells lots of cultured pearls.  The value of a cultured pearl could be

MEET THE TEAM: MARTINE AND BENEDICTE LAVOIE OF PIERRES DE CHARME INC.
Tumblr media
After working in real estate for thirty years, Martine Lavoie decided to change course and pursue an entirely new career—gemmology. After completing her classes at The Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A), the world's longest established provider of gem and jewellery education, Martine founded Pierres de charme Inc., specializing in the sales of gems and precious stones, in 2012.
"In the beginning, the gem market in Montreal wasn't quite as important so I spent a year building my customer base in Halifax, Vancouver, and Calgary. It happened one brick at a time. Slowly you meet people, you give great service, and you get good reviews. I eventually began reaching out of Montreal, I moved my business out of my home and into an office, and then my daughter joined the team."
Bénédicte Lavoie pursued her studies in gemmology after completing a Bachelor's degree in HR management and was awarded the internationally recognized title of FGA-Merit (Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain). She joined Pierres de charme Inc. 2015 and has been working in the industry full-time for the past six years.
"Our interests are very complimentary. I love travelling and the business side of the industry, whereas my daughter is very interested in mining and cutting. We try to know everything about our gems, from beginning to end."
Every six months, the mother-daughter gem dealers visit their clients in Quebec City, Halifax, Fredericton, Toronto, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver; and eight jewellery schools in Canada. They also travel the world to continue forging and strengthening ties with respected suppliers in Switzerland, Hong Kong, Las Vegas, Burma, Sri Lanka, Brazil, and East Africa.
"It's a strong and active community of people. We all share, rather than compete, to make it work. It's a world of gratefulness and honour. You don't see a stone the same way when you see all the work that goes into finding it. These are not manufactured gems, they take millions of years to create and are so rare to find. It's like a piece of art from the earth."

WORK WE LOVE: A BIRD’S NEST RING FOR LOUISE LACEY-ROKOSH
Tumblr media
Louise Lacey-Rokosh first met Ellinor at the Calgary Rowing Club, almost seven years ago, which is how she discovered EVStenroos signature design — the Bird's Nest Ring.
"I had been collecting rings from relatives for a while. My Great Aunt Ruby, Aunt Phillis, Aunt Gladys, and Great Uncle Bill all left me solitaires in their wills that I wanted to make into something special. Since each diamond is a different shape and cut, I knew combining them into one ring would make the design quite random but it's perfect for Ellinor's Bird's Nest Ring."
After their initial meeting, Ellinor sent Louise four designs. With a few modifications and help from family, she chose the first rendering.
"I call it my wrinkly love ring, and I think Ruby, Phillis, Gladys, and Bill would be pleased to see me wearing it. I understand why Ellinor has won awards for this design. It's beautiful, and unique and working with her is so easy."
Not only is Louise an avid rower, who competed in the 2019 World Rowing Masters Regatta in Hungary, but she is also an artist with a BFA in painting and a double master's in Architecture and Architectural Technology.
Tumblr media
Quilt series - Pinwheel 24x 30, Oil on panel. In recent juried show at the Leighton Art Centre
"I had a dream job, I was living in London and working as a Senior Design Architect with some of the best architects in the world but, in 2005, I knew it was time to leave and paint full-time instead."
Although her inspiration is always changing, Louise looks to artists, like Edmond Praybe, Zoey Frank, and Maggie Siner, who leave their "handwriting", their personal, identifiable brushwork on their paintings.
"The power of their mark-making is what stands them apart from other artists. You can tell their work anywhere, anytime."
Louise has exhibited in numerous group and solo shows, and her paintings reside in private collections across Canada, the USA, and England. You can view her work in-person at the Leighton Art Centre in Millarville, Alberta. To learn more about Louise, visit her website and follow her on Instagram at @LouiseRokosh .

“This will be quick and easy,” she thought.
I went into this project thinking that this wouldn’t be too difficult. New wallpaper, a fresh coat of paint, a new window shade, and a change of lighting. That’s it! It has taken some time though, as these things often do when you’re doing all of the work yourself and fitting it in around other work and life in general.
The bathroom on the first floor had a lot going for it that I liked. It’s small by modern standards, but perfectly sized to me. The beadboard is charming, the wood floor keeps continuity with the rest of the house, and the leaded glass window offers privacy. The antique console sink is adorable! The separate hot and cold taps are not ideal, but we’re used to them (we had separate taps at our old house too). I also like the antique toilet and its wooden tank. The photos below are from the bathroom as it was when we first moved in.
Hello, inspiration. And wallpaper.
I swapped the wooden toilet seat for a black one years ago and I think that for a toilet, it’s really good looking. Other than that, we hadn’t done anything in the bathroom because while it wasn’t anything I had chosen, I thought it all looked rather nice. But it was time for a change! I found this snakes wallpaper and felt inspired. I know it’s not for everyone, but I’m excited and it’s going to be so good in the bathroom.
Big Cabinet of Natural Curiosities vibes. ↓
This pandemic year has been weirdly great for my creativity, and then completely zonking my energy level and sense of time passing. But hey, who came up with a plan to affordably refresh a good portion of the first floor so that it all feels fresh and works together and looks amazing? This lady.
Kitchen plans on the blog to come! I’m always more up to date in sharing on Instagram these days, especially in Stories, so I’d love to have you follow along there if you’re not already.
Lighting
OK, we’ve got the main jumping off point, the snakes wallpaper. The tiled shower is not changing, and the fixtures are staying. What can go though are those old Guillermo del Toro sconces.
These Sculptural Glass Ribbed Pendant and matching Sculptural Glass Ribbed Sconce are from West Elm. I like the look of them on their own, but also appreciate that they reference the ribbed Victorian glass shades that were in the room before, with a definite Noguchi Akari influence. And they are damp-rated, which is something to pay attention to when selecting fixtures for a bathroom.
The lights have been here for a while but I held one of the sconces over a light bulb the other day and it was beautiful when lit up!
There’s a junction box in the ceiling and what seems to be a corresponding light switch. I’ve already taken the cover plate off and the wires inside look to be newer than some of the horrors I’ve uncovered in this house. Will it work when I hook up a light? Let’s hope! Otherwise, that’s a job for an electrician. I am doing all of this work myself and I can swap out light fixtures, but I don’t feel confident in DIY troubleshooting of electrical issues.
Fabric
I liked the roman shade that was here with its etching-style illustrations of birds and tassel fringe, but it doesn’t go with the new design. My first thought for a new fabric was to go with stripes, but between the fabric, ribbed glass shades, and beadboard, it would have been too much. If I were going to choose a solid color, I’d match the ivory linen of our shower curtain. Nice and easy. But we never ever do nothing nice and easy.
It’s between these two Sister Parish fabrics (Burma in red and Cecil Stripe in dark brown). There was a flash sale and I got such a good price that I ordered both.
Paint
So easy. Our dining room is pink with a red ceiling. The kitchen and it’s little hallway/storage area will be, essentially, Caca Dauphin. (Did you know that story!?) The bathroom is between these two saturated, colorful spaces.
I am not painting the quarter sawn oak on the first floor, but everything else was fir or pine, and I am completely fine with painting that. The doors on the second and third floor are all black, and now the bathroom door is as well. The door trim, window trim, and medicine cabinet have all been sanded and primed, and I’ve given them and the beadboard all a matching coat of satin paint in Benjamin Moore’s Bare Essence. It’s a warm neutral, and a match for Farrow & Ball’s Joa’s White. It’s also a near match for the existing shower tile and looks great with the new wallpaper.
The Bathroom Design
All together now!
Sculptural Glass Ribbed Sconce, West Elm
Sculptural Glass Ribbed Pendant (9.5″), West Elm
Giove (Ruby/Garnet) Schumacher Wallpaper, Wayfair
Bare Essence, Benjamin Moore (Aura, Satin), Black Beauty, Benjamin Moore (Aura, Semi-Gloss)
Vintage-Washed Belgian Flax Linen Shower Curtain (Ivory), Restoration Hardware
Sister Parish Burma Fabric (Red) or Cecil Stripe Fabric (Dark Brown)
The painting is just about done — I need to do one more coat on the window and medicine cabinet. Then it’s a coat of wallpaper primer on the walls (Shieldz) before I can hang wallpaper and finally install the sconces. Roman shades are not the easiest to make, but I’ve gotten a little experience with them now and feel good about my window treatment skills. Slithering along.

Now Is The Time For You To Know The Truth About Red Yucca Plant | Red Yucca Plant
When the echinocereus bloom, they flash like huge Burma rubies in the dry arid brush. Even in bounce they are so big and adventurous that all colors achromatize in allegory with these gem affection flowers. You see, Burma rubies were consistently appropriate because they are not aloof red like pigeon’s claret stones but accommodate dejected which yields the hardly magenta, purpley tones. Old Burma rubies were never calefaction advised to enhance their blush like avant-garde ones, so affection stones can be acutely big-ticket today.
Unlike its blaze agent red flowered accessory E. triglochidiatus, our bounded multi-stem built-in cactus Echinocereus engelmannii is the finest of the absolute genus. It can about be begin on alluvial slopes, cliffs, crumbling hillsides and on the basin attic forth the abject of the foothills.
