i present to you, a very unserious post in which i insult every NHL team!
(this is all exaggerated so don’t get mad at me)
anaheim ducks - why is it that 1/3 of the way through the season you remember how to play hockey? like at this point it’s useless since you’re not making the playoffs and if you keep up like this you sure aren’t getting bedard
arizona coyotes - i do not like your jerseys. you would be forgettable but you suck too much for it
boston bruins - the only thing your team has going for you are your goalies and i hope next season you end up where the ducks are rn: not good enough for the playoffs and not bad enough for the draft lottery. sorry garnet hathaway (please come back)
buffalo sabres - i can define your entire team in one word: disappointment
calgary flames - anything good about you died when matthew tkachuk decided to go to florida. sorry!
carolina hurricanes - something about the “canes” nickname annoys the shit out of me. i hope you get a first round exit purely so the fans enjoying their team being good for once can be upset about it
chicago blackhawks - do i even have to say anything? because ew
colorado avalanche - literally how did you win the cup last year? thanks for the cup winning goalie btw <3 kuemper is better as a cap
columbus blue jackets - you don’t deserve bedard and i hope you lose the lottery since you’re clearly not pulling yourself out of the tank like the ducks
dallas stars - your jerseys are fucking ugly and the only stars player i can think of is tyler seguin (seriously… why that green…)
detroit red wings - you have the most obnoxious fan base i have ever had the displeasure of being in the same stadium with. LET GO OF THE 90s!!! PLEASE
edmonton oilers - how do you have two of the best players in the league and still manage to fail to get a cup every single playoffs
florida panthers - honestly if it weren’t for matthew tkachuk trade and the all stars game you’d be a dying, forgettable team
los angeles kings - i literally cant think of anything to put here. that’s how little you matter.
minnesota wild - one time in like 2019 the wild squished the caps at a game i was at so i decided that the wild suck. other than that y’all are so forgettable that i don’t have anything else to say
montreal canadiens - how is it that you keep managing to get beaten so so badly by teams that suck?
nashville predators - uuuugly ass jerseys and stuuuupid ass name
new jersey devils - jack hughes isn’t as hot as y’all think he is both in terms of attraction and skill
new york islanders - i hold a deep seated hatred for all new york city teams. you and your fanbases are so goddamn annoying
new york rangers - same with the islanders except 10x worse purely because of the little rivalry the caps hage with you (hope tom wilson squishes you tonight <3)
ottawa senators - really says something about your team that you had to name brady tkachuk of all people captain
philadelphia flyers - literally what is your logo i hate it. the only thing you have going for you is gritty and even that gets tiring REAL fast
pittsburgh penguins - i don’t care if the caps/pens rivalry doesn’t exist anymore it’s ingrained into me i hate you all and especially sidney crosby. you’re an aging team. retire already. ovechkin is better and malkin is overhyped
san jose sharks - wasted a sick ass team name on a depressing team
seattle kraken - y’all were doing so good at the start of the season what the hell happened. now it’s just disappointment…
st. louis blues - you’re one of those teams that i forget isn’t fake sometimes. like you’re not forgettable you’re just not… real
tampa bay lightning - i don’t get the hype the fanbase has for vasilevsky and your gray/yellow jerseys are way better than the normal ones
toronto maple leafs - auston matthews is not hot even slightly y’all just have competency kinks and it’s sad
vancouver canucks - quinn hughes looks so haunted and depressed all the time for a reason
vegas golden knights - did y’all think you were being funny when you decided to match with the kings?
washington capitals - jesus fuck just retire the entire goddamn team at this point. stop sending your prospects to the ahl and fucking play them if you want to give your roster some “youth” (i’m looking at you gmbm & laviolette)
winnipeg jets - if it weren’t for the fact that i used a website to make this list alphabetical order i would’ve forgotten you

updated thoughts on NHL teams this holiday season WITH EXPLANATIONS under <3 (update i started this on christmas eve after work. it is now almost new years)
Tumblr media
rangers: geographically makes sense. my friends entire family likes them and the first hockey player i ever heard of was panarin (i wrote about him in an ap lang essay once) they are so babygirl to me even if they are a literal mess sometimes <3333 my favs include fox, kreider, and miller who are all so cool. kreider is personal to me for a variety of reasons and i root for his success everyday. fox is simply just!! i adore him and miller is the best and i can’t wait to see how he gets better over time. bonus to panarin for being my first and always looking cool in the videos the rangers twitter posts
-
canes: their vibes are good, they’re young and competitive, fun to watch and their social media presence is really well done <3 favs are kochetkov and skjei (bonus to aho for being my birthday twin) ive liked kochetkov since the second round last year even though his team did lose against mine so!! im happy to see him have such a large role on the canes this year
sabres: literally the sabres just look like they’re having a good time and that all the players love each other which is genuinely so fun to see, their merch is cute (my school’s chorus teacher wore a sabres ugly christmas sweater a few days ago) and i dig the blue and yellow. if i wasn’t a rangers fan this is probably the team i would’ve chosen to root for. unfortunately buffalo as a place was meh (even if it was really high on the list of places i strongly considered going to college) <33 my favs are skinner (MY FAV 30 YEAR OLD MAN) and power who is young and cool ig
senators: the vibes just seem good yk they are young and a mess what more could you want. i thought they’d be doing a lot better than they really are doing this year which sucks but whatever. i know nothing about them but i just feel like rooting for them they have that feel that makes you want them to succeed <3 favs are whatever dynamic is happening with tim and brady it is COMICAL in ottawa and they are literally just so funny to me
devils: that streak was very satisfying, i was wishing only the best for them. technically as a rangers fan the devils are like a metropolitan area rival but i literally do not care? they’re the type of team i root to succeed except for when some other team i like is against them so <333 basic but the fav has got to be jack hughes all of those brothers are FREAKS
-
stars: i like robertson a lot. oettinger is growing on me too and i dig green as a color so the stars are okay in my book
red wings: i got sent about four trade requests for moritz seider. the way he hits people is hilarious to me and i like his wild hair. also dylan larkin is cool. his cheeks are very rosy. their logo is charming and classic
canadiens: nick suzuki you are a delight and i care for you deeply (FIRST ASIAN CAPTAIN IN HABS HISTORY!!!!) the rookies are super entertaining too i like xhejab’s whole narrative
maple leafs: mitch marner. look at him is he not the most endearing player ever. i do not care about the rest of the team but the tavares narrative is intensely funny to me and i applaud him for leaving long island. i can actually name multiple players on this team which im proud of myself for
-
wild: this is mostly because their logo is pretty and i adore their vibes in regards to like kaprizov and reaves in christmas fits. ill say my fav is matt boldy bc he looks like he has a frog in his mouth and bc i don’t really know anyone on the team well enough to pick a fav
flyers: the vibes are so bad to where they’re literally good. it doesn’t make sense at all but that’s how it is. i like the jokes about their coach. fav is tk because he is always on something insane and it is so funny to go on twitter and see what shenanigans he started
penguins: they are so basic but i think everyone has thoughts on the penguins. like first off i know nothing about pittsburgh besides the fact that the penguins exist and that they’re having a great time. i don’t have a specific fav but geno is very funny in interviews so ill say him
avalanche: kept up with them after the rangers got out in the conference finals last year and they were very endearing. the vibes after they won were through the roof and this is probably one of the only teams where i can name the majority of the roster. favs include makar (he was my og avs fav during the cup run) and newy (he’s just … i want to hold him in my pocket)
-
coyotes: i really don’t think i have to explain this? it’s literally where careers go to die, they have no arena at the moment, and everyone makes fun of them constantly. i feel immense amounts of pity for them but it’s always funny when some team that everyone thinks is much better loses to the coyotes. they keep the league on their toes. i can’t pick a fav bc i literally can’t name a single player. logan cooley is a prospect for them tho whose name i do know
ducks: every time they aren’t #32 in the league i consider it a miracle. they’re in such dire straits im not even sure what’s happening. on one hand, i admire the attempt at getting bedard but also like. cmon guys put a pep in your step. fav is going to be trevor zegras bc he’s always getting into something and i admire the NHL trying to advertise him as the face of the sport over mcdavid (he is the only player i know besides gibson so??)
canucks: they are literally so pathetic im not even sure where to get started. that losing streak at the beginning of the season? they are like a sad sopping wet cat. they look so defeated but i admire petey single-handedly dragging them to survival. their news is 90% trade rumors on who is getting sent away. fav will be quinn hughes bc i am basic and he is just Like that but also petey because he’s a delight and blond
-
kings: my brother said “ive heard you mention them like once” which probably shows how much i care about them. i can name one player and it’s kopitar. also like quinton byfield but he’s a prospect. i could care less about them and their color scheme is lame
sharks: i love the sharks logo and their jerseys and their color scheme. unfortunately i don’t care about them as all and the only player i can name is couture and that’s bc he’s the captain and i did a sporcle on NHL captains once
predators: no i don’t know anything about them nor do i want to. i don’t like yellow as a color and roman josi and cody glass are the only players on their roster i know. i don’t even know much about nashville as a city
golden knights: look i really don’t know much about them. yeah mark stone is the captain and yeah i have eichel on my fantasy team but everything i hear about vegas is filled with loathing. i do wish eichel a happy revenge arc but other than that they can flop for all i care
capitals: i think as a team their vibes are good but i just do not care. this is one of the few teams in this tier where i can name more than three players which is a miracle. ive been seeing a lot of videos of dylan strome with his daughter which is adorable and i hope he signs long term in washington. cheers to ovechkin and whatever he’s doing i guess?
lightning: they’re like too good. like everyone gets it you’ve won two cups since 2020 but i just don’t really care? there’s no fun pathetic underdog arc for them. some guy at my school has a bunch of merch for them which makes no sense to me geographically but that’s whatever. stamkos is like the only player from the team that i can name but he’s cool and that video of his son with the zamboni is adorable
jets: i have multiple jets players on my fantasy team and i still can’t remember their names. winnipeg isn’t real to me and i refuse to believe it actually exists. i realize that they’re not even doing bad this year but narratively they’re kind of lame. their logo is meh to me but i love most of their jerseys
blues: i do not care about missouri as a state and know nothing about it. i can’t even believe they have a hockey team. still not a fan of yellow but i think the music note logo is cute. i know robert thomas and whatever that goalie who’s getting roasted on twitter every week. that is the extent of my knowledge and care for them. they won a cup in recent history so.
blue jackets: they’re just kind of sad at the moment because i feel like their entire roster is on IR? i feel like at the moment im writing this they’re probably like #31 in the league so lots of pity but also i just don’t care about them. their logo is pretty tho! i can name four players (werenski, johnson, laine, and gaudreau) so im counting that as a win! i have johnson on my fantasy team so i hope they keep him on the first line forever (update: not thrilled with them putting on a firework show when one of their goalies literally died because of a firework incident that proceeded to traumatize their other current goalie)
panthers: sorry to the panthers but i really don’t care about them? their logo is lame but their reverse retro jerseys are cool so they have that going for them. i know matthew tkachuk plays for them and there was a whole dramatic trade this summer but that’s it!
-
bruins: this one is actually petty i just don’t like them which doesn’t bode well with my future lol. like as far as it goes, they’re a good team and have respectable locker room culture so i should like them more than i do but i just don’t like them. their logo is boring. sorry bruins but i do like mcavoy and root for his success often
flames: i think the battle of alberta is lame. wishing only the best for kadri though who is the only flames player i know!
oilers: i think the battle of alberta is lame (part two) yeah yeah connor mcdavid who is very good but has not expressed an emotion to the media since he was 18 which probably says something about sports culture and i feel bad but also like. edmonton? really? (update after watching the ruff ruff relay, mcdavid’s dog is cute and i like that the oilers did this) tyson barrie is also cool he’s my birthday twin and i wish only the best for him
islanders: my apush teacher in 11th grade was an islanders fan. he wasn’t a great teacher and as a person was questionable, including an implication of calling girls sluts, questionable responses when asked about the lgbtq community, and thinking he was considerably more liberal than he came off as. he microaggressed me as a show of anti racism; i didn’t feel the anti racism energy, in fact i felt very uncomfortable bc it was his response to finding out i did research on racial stereotypes for about the last six months (research that literally ended up with me in multiple newspapers because it was pretty decent). did get a 5 on the exam and 100 in the class but he left a lasting impression of what team i immediately crossed off my list when deciding what hockey team to cheer for. i love the look of their aqua orange color scheme (not the blue orange that is lame) and the fisherman jerseys are super cool. would not be this low in the ranking if i didn’t have that apush teacher, who i always avoid in the halls. if he didn’t exist i might’ve been an islanders fan instead. shoutout to mat barzal whose jersey i see constantly. other players i know are lee, cizikas, and sorokin
-
blackhawks: do i need to explain this. i get literal psychic brain damage every time someone says kane to the rangers. literally psychic brain damage. if kane ever goes to the rangers im cutting my losses and becoming a sabres fan

Auston Matthews - For the First Time
Tumblr media
Masterlist
Word count: 2,473
The number one thing on my bucket list is to go to a hockey game in every arena. So far I have been to ten.
Growing up in a state with no hockey sucked for a hockey fan. The only thing Alabama really cares about is college football. My parents moved to Alabama from Buffalo when I was about five. They grow up watching hockey so I grew watching hockey.
None of my friends liked hockey they didn’t know anything about it. So when the game was on I would go on twitter and just tweet about it and then I just talked to talk to other hockey fans on there and that is how I meet my six best friends on twitter.
I first started talking to Rachael, she is a die-hard New York Rangers fan. She was friends with Emily who is a St. Louis Blues fan. I saw Maggie bash on my Sabres so I bashed her Maple Leafs and somehow we kept talking. I congratulated Sam on the Capitals cup win last year and we had a long conversation about both our teams. Elizabeth tweeted me asking how I was a fan of Buffalo when I live in Alabama so that stared a long conversation, she’s a Lightning fan. Last but not least Jessica the Montreal Canadiens fan, I tweeted her about Carey Price because I have a soft spot for that man. So in our group, we have a Rangers, Blues, Sabres, Leafs, Capitals, Lightning, and Canadiens.
We all have started traveling to go to hockey games together. Right now Rachael, Emily, Sam, Elizabeth, Jessica, and I are all on our way to meet up in Toronto. Maggie has been bugging us all to go to a home Leafs game.
Something that the girls don’t know is that for the past six months I have been talking to Auston Matthews. I know me a Buffalo Sabres fan talking to Toronto's golden boy. Auston messaged me on Twitter after I posted a picture of Maggie and me, her in a Leafs jersey and me in a Sabres one. He thought it was weird that we were friends when we should hate each other. I told him Maggie and I fight about it all the time but we are still really close friends. The next day he messaged me asking how my day went and we have been talking ever since.
Once I stepped off the plane my phone started ringing. I took it out expecting it being one of the girls but instead, it was Auston, a smile appeared on my face and butterflies start flying around in my stomach.
“Hello?”
“Hey beautiful, are you in Toronto yet?”
“Just stepped off the plane actually.”
“What are you doing for dinner tonight?” I could never get tired of hearing his voice.
“I don’t know I haven’t spoken to the girls yet. You’re the first one I have talked to.”
“Well, some of the guys and I were going to get something to eat. I really want to see you.”
“Y/N!” I turn around and see Elizabeth walking fast to me.
“I will have to see what we are doing but they don’t know I have been talking to you yet but I really want to see you too Auston.”
“Okay, I will text you.” And with that, we said goodbye and hung up.
“Elizabeth!” I put my phone in my back pocket and got ready for impacted.
“Even though we saw each other last month it feels like it's been longer.” She wrapped her arms around me and I did the same.
“I know. How was your flight?” She picked up her bag that she dropped before she gave me a hug.
“It was good. There was a cute guy sitting next to me.” She pulled out a napkin with writing on it. “And yes I got his number.” I laughed and made our way to the front doors.
All our planes are supposed to land around the same time so we didn’t have to make so many trips to the airport.
“Well well well look who we have here.” Elizabeth and I turned around and see Rachael looking at both of us. “A Lightning and Sabres fan in a Toronto’s airport.”
“While you're looking at us have to you seen the Rangers play lately?”
“My dear Elizabeth it doesn’t matter how bad the Rangers are doing I will still cheer them on no matter what, Y/N should know all about that.” I rolled my eyes and went up to hug her.
“I don’t want to hug you right now but I will.” As I pulled away I felt my phone go off telling me I had a text. I looked at it and saw it was Auston.
Auston
I forgot to ask you if you thought about what we talked about yesterday?
Yesterday Auston had asked me to stay in Toronto for a little longer then just the couple days I was planning. Its all I really thought about on the plane.
Y/N
I have. We will talk later
“And who are you texting?” I look up at Elizabeth.
“We should go find Jess, Maggie, Sam, and Emily.” I ignored her question. I was laying on telling all of them about Auston I just wanted to tell them all together.
“We see you ignoring that question?” I knew the was Emily by her voice. “Now tell us who you were texting.”
“Were you eavesdropping?”
“There you go again.” Ignoring all of them I start walking ahead of them.
I start looking around for Maggie. I see her, Sam, and Jessica looking around for us. As soon as they see me they start to walk over.
Y/N
Where you and the guys thinking about eating?
“I’m hungry so I say we get something to eat,” Jess says we get in the car.
Maggie starts naming places off that we could go to.
Auston
CN Tower, we are about to call to tell them to have a table ready for us how many girls are there again?
Y/N
Seven total
“What about CN Tower?” I asked
“Oh yeah, I want to go there too,” Sam said looking at Maggie who is driving.
“We are going to have to call to get a table then.” It's now or never.
“There is something I need to tell you guys.”
“After I call the CN Tower,” Emily said looking up the number.
“No, it needs to be before you call.” They all looked at me. “So I probably should have told you all this a while ago but I didn’t know where things were going to go but I have been talking to someone.”
“Not trying to be rude or anything Y/N but why did I have to wait to call till after you told us that?”
“I’m getting there,” I took a deep breath in “We first started talking on twitter. I thought it was just going to be that one conversation but we have talked every day for the past six months.”
“Six months?!” They all said at the same time. Maggie pulled into a random parking lot and turned around to look back at me.
“He lives here in Toronto.” Maggie’s eyes went wide along with everyone else.
“Are you going to tell us who it is or show us what he looks like?” Rachael asked
“Is he going to be at CN Tower? Is that why you suggested we go there?” Sam asked
“Yes he and some of his friends are going to be there and you guys kinda already know who he is.” They looked at me confused. This is a lot harder then I thought it was going to be. “His name is Auston. Auston Matthews.”
“As in Toronto’s first-round pick in 2016 Auston Matthews?”
“As in the guy that had fours goals in his first NHL game?”
“The Auston Matthews that Maggie always says is better than Jack Eichel and you guys always fight about it?”
“That is the Auston Matthews I’ve been talking to.”
“Not going to lie Y/N but I’m kinda jealous,” Elizabeth said.
“Wait are we having dinner with him?” Maggie asked looking at me in panic. I just nodded my head yes.
After they all freaked out a bit Maggie more then anyone we made our way to the CN Tower. Auston text me saying that they were already there just waiting on us. As a ready that I started to get nervous. I’m about to meet the person I have been talking for six months.
We all go out of the car and I just looked up at the tower and couldn’t move.
“Are you okay?” Jessica looked at me and I didn’t say
“What if I’m not what he is expecting? I mean we have FaceTime but seeing someone on the phone and seeing them in person is a lot different.”
“You have nothing to worry about.” I followed them but I stayed back.
Once we got to the front they asked us the name of our reservation name they all looked at me and I probably looked like I was a deer in headlights.
“They’re with me.” Everyone’s head snapped at who just spoke.
“So it's true,” Rachael said looking back at me. I tried to say something just nothing came out.
“Can you show these women where our table is, please?” Auston asked the guy at the desk he nodded his head. The girls followed behind him and I stay put and looked at Auston walking over to me.
“Y/N”
“Auston” I smiled up at him and walked a little closer to him and hug him. He wrapped his arms around me and hugged me a little tighter then I did.
Dinner was very interesting, to say the least. Maggie freaked out a bit because not only did she meet Auston she always meat Mitch Marner, Patrick Marleau, William Nylander, Frederik Andersen, and Kasperi Kapanen. A lot of the time while sitting down at the table Auston and I was in our own conversation not paying any attention to the others at the table.
“So yesterday at dinner you and Auston didn’t really talk to anyone except each other,” Maggie said while she was getting ready.
Maggie had decided to get stay with us at the hotel instead of going back home last night.
“I know and I’m sorry about that-“
“No don’t be sorry Y/N, I just never seen you like that before.” I went to grab my jersey for tonight. “I really hope you aren’t playing on where that Buffalo jersey of yours.”
“In fact, I am planning on it. Is that a problem?”
“Your dating Auston though,”
“We aren’t dating,”
“It looked like you were yesterday,” I didn’t say anything and looked at my Sabres jersey. Since the girls and I started going to game together we would always wear our team's jersey it didn’t matter who the teams were that were playing. Today is the only day I thought about wearing a different jersey.
“I thought about this while packing my jersey you know. What I would wear to the game. I thought about buying a Leafs jersey but I would be a Sabres fan getting a Leafs jersey. I also thought about I’m Sabres fan talking to a Maple Leafs player who I’m also started to have feelings for.”
“I have a Leafs sweatshirt I can wear tonight you can wear my Matthews jersey.” Maggie handed me her jersey. I looked down at it. “And when we all go to a game in Buffalo I will wear a Sabres jersey to make up for this.” I laughed at her and took the jersey.
Maggie and I made our way down to the lobby of the hotel where the others were waiting for us. As the doors of the elevator opened we saw the girls standing there they looked at us and their eyes went wide. I smiled at them I did a little spin to show them what I was wearing.
“My skin is burning just so all of you know.” They all laughed and we made our way to the arena.
Auston
Meet me at the locker room?
I looked down at my phone and smiled.
“Loverboy texting you?” Emily asked walking next to me.
“He wants me to meet him at the locker room.”
“Are you going to go?”
“Yeah, I think I am.”
Auston told me how to get down there. It was weird walking these halls see Maple Leafs pictures all around. Some of them were of Auston which I stopped and looked at and just smiled at the man in the picture.
Once I got where he told me to meet him I waited till he came out. Once I heard a door open I looked at the direction the open door and see Auston walk out with Mitch right behind him. Auston looked up at me and down at the jersey I was wearing.
“I’m going to tell you hat I told the girls, this jersey is burning my skin and it-“ Before I was able to say anything else Auston walked over to me and kissed me. I have thought about kissing him so many times. I just didn’t think about kissing him in a Maple Leafs jersey.
“I’m surprised you didn’t kiss her last night.” We pulled away when we heard Mitch joke.
“Will you get out of here” Auston turned to Mitch and he just nodded and walked back in the locker room.
“So didn’t you just telling me to come here so you can kiss me?” I asked the man standing in front of me.
“No I wasn’t planning on kissing you right now but seeing you in my jersey I couldn’t help myself.” I smiled up at him. “I actually wanted to ask you something. So we have been talking for about six months and we just officially meet in person yesterday but I wanted to ask you if you would do me the honor and being my girlfriend and before you answer I know it might be hard at times but we can make it work I promise.”
“It is going to be hard I know that. It was hard talking to you for the past six months but here we are. My answer is yes.” I stood on my toes and kissed him. “I also have an answer to what we talked about the other day about me staying here a little longer and I would love to see Toronto a little bit longer maybe someone could take me around.”
“I think I know someone who could do that.”

When working as a buyer's agent I am never concerned about the amount of commission a listing agent has charged a home seller to list their home. It just doesn't matter. 3%, 4% or 6% I don't care. These are the exciting anticipatory days when any fate might unfold except, probably, dear old Tim Henman winning Wimbledon and Wayne Rooney writing or even reading a book. As for the rest of the cast, they are busy reading the runes (even those drunk and on holiday) and have kindly donated their thoughts on their three wishes for 2005 a professional wish, a personal wish and a frivolous wish (some of which are positively frightening). The best of luck to them all.
Cheap Jerseys from china When buying a trout net, you need to consider several factors: the distance across the hoop, or bow, of the net; the length of the handle; the depth of the net; and the material and mesh size of the net itself. The traditional trout fishing net was wholesale nfl jerseys of maple wood and came with an 8 inch (20 centimeter) handle and three quarter inch (1.9 centimeter) nylon mesh. Today, aluminum often replaces the wood, and a wider selection of features give anglers more choice.  Cheap Jerseys from china

The Turning Point for the Buffalo Sabres
Tumblr media
With the Coronavirus Pandemic shutting down sports across the world many networks have turned to classic games to fill airtime. The Buffalo Sabres broadcast partner MSG is doing likewise. I sat down to watch that massive 2007 playoff semifinal game six against the New York Rangers and took in the last great Era in Sabres history. We’re closing in on the thirteenth anniversary of that series, the last time this team won a playoff series. It makes you think about how hockey, your family and your life has changed in that time. I’ll be very honest I wasn’t watching the Sabres at the time as a 7th grader in Canandaigua, NY.
I’ve been trying to write an article on this hockey team since the trade deadline. All my attempts have turned into either morbid rainclouds unhelpful in the legitimate global crisis we’re in right now, or toothless appraisals of moves that didn’t work. The part of me that was optimistic about this team probably disappeared during a Senators game over the winter but to the degree I can tell you what it would’ve said is this: opportunity is the least kind of hope… but it is hope.
I don’t want hope right now. I’ve been disappointed so much to the point of looking like a buffoon for ever being optimistic about this team. In this mad world we live in my hope is better spent in many places beyond sports. Then again as much as I’ve grown to hate this team I know I’ll come back. There can be numerous players who want out, the team can suck for the ninth straight year, the owners can prove again and again they’re in a specific class of rich folk who sincerely don’t give a fuck about anyone who can’t give them value back… but I will at least casually watch this team… always… but we’ll circle back around to that thought.
So where are the Buffalo Sabres at? The last time I felt confident I knew where this club stood it was summer 2018. Ryan O’Reilly had just been traded away for a package that would prove to be almost nothing. As much as I defended the move at the time I knew deep down there was trouble ahead. When the ten-game winning streak happened I fooled myself into believing they had turned a corner. Where are they now? Still without a bonafede 2nd line center in spite of a handful of great efforts there. The team is still basically Jack Eichel and a collection of dudes who we know…. Can win in October?
So here is what I do know about where the Buffalo Sabres are: they’re at a turning point. Much has been written of the salary cap space coming this summer. There are only a handful of players still on the cap next season and another handful you probably want to resign. There will be millions of dollars free to play around with even after you do those likely re-signings. Assuming we don’t see a repeat of last summer (many replacement level players being brought back on short term deals) there will be space to reshape the roster. I can’t tell you how much the salary cap likely staying flat or dropping due to this global crisis stunts this. Anything I could give you there would be a guess. At the trade deadline I went over where the positions of need are and what could really help this roster. I don’t feel the need to go over it again here. No, I think there is more on the line this summer than even a roster renovation. The Buffalo Sabres are at an existential turning point as an organization. If they don’t take off in an upward direction this summer (for real this time) then we’re entering a dark timeline.
Without a playoff berth in 2021 and a return to competitive relevance this team will move from an endless rebuild into the wasteland. You can’t be an awful club for a decade and expect to recover from that abject irrelevance in a single year (in the States). Call Buffalo a del-facto Canadian market all you want; the end is near if they cannot finally emerge from the endless rebuild. I’m not saying they’ll be moved; I think RJ is right in saying that will never happen here, but a turning point is at hand this summer no matter who the GM is calling the shots.
Now consider the Buffalo Bills are getting really good for the first time in a generation down in Orchard Park. The Pegulas own that team too and the argument they care far more for that franchise now is well-founded if not provable by the conditions the Buffalo Sabres are in. I said earlier that I will always at least casually support the Sabres. I have collections of Sabres hats, pins and jerseys so that was selling it a little short. But I think I speak for the common perception when I say the Sabres will never be irrelevant in this market because we’ll all come back like the suckers we are. BUT… If the Bills become a top team in the AFC the Sabres will be even more an afterthought than they already are. If the owners are treating them like an afterthought too then… well we may have already crossed the turning point to irrelevance.
The 2007 Highlights hurt to watch for me, having never even originally experienced that high. If the final dive into irrelevance begins shortly here for the Buffalo Sabres those highlights will become our version of the 1968 Superbowl highlights for New York Jets fans: irrelevant callback to a time we had fun. The saddest part there being we never got a championship to show for it. Make no mistake: the Buffalo Sabres are at the seminal turning point of franchise history.

Rasmus Dahlin | Comfort Is All I Need
Tumblr media
College assignments to be done, crazy things happening at work was all that I was thinking about at the moment. These assignments would help boost my grades up but I can’t seem to get to them because of my job. The reason why I am attending college is to get a good job that paid me well but now that I think about it, I love the job I have now. I am just going to college because my parents wanted me to go when in reality being main merch creator for the Buffalo Sabres was what I always wanted to do. When I was little, I loved playing hockey and always dreamed about working for my favorite NHL team. I always loved art and would draw my ideas hoping that one day they would get used and they did and all the fans loved them, that made me happy. I also helped the equipment managers order new equipment occasionally.
Currently sitting in my office at the rink taking a break from drawing new merch ideas, I think about everything that has happened to get me to this point and can’t help but think about all the school that I had to do before the holidays start which only adds to the stress I already have from making sure that all the fans have what they want ordering online. I actually have thought about quitting college before, didn’t because my parents weren’t happy when I brought it up and now have stopped talking to me so I think it’s okay to just stop going, I will just call. Now that I think about it, it does make me sad that my parents aren’t talking to me all because I don’t want to get a better job than I have now but c'mon who wouldn’t want this job. I made friends with half the team, cried when a couple would get traded and laughed with the new players, the veterans or the coaching staff would introduce me as Champ which was the nickname my first Coach gave me and it has stuck with me growing up. I remember the first time the team heard my nickname, the Coach who coached me from novice to peewee’s came to visit me and at that time I had a whole squad in my office just hanging with me talking about ideas while sitting on the few furniture I have in my office while watching TV, he walks in looks at me and goes ‘Hey Champ’ and then continues his way down the hall while everyone in the room asked me why he called me that, after that they started asking me to play some shiny with them about once a week.
I didn’t realize I was crying until a tear dropped on to my desk, it's a good thing I don’t wear make up cuz then it would be all over my cheeks with the way i was wiping my tears away. They still went down my face as I started answering emails from the equipment managers since they were asking me to send out orders. I completely forgot that Coach was showing some players around because I was so focused on thinking about what to do to reduce my stress. The tears still fell as Coach opened the door “this is Y/N also known as Champ, she takes care of the orders of equipment and the merch” when the players looked inside, I just waved and smiled a watery smile. They all just stared at me, I notice Rasmus has a soft look on his face, even the Coach stared at me “you okay?” He asked me “yeah I will be fine” I say, tears still slowly going down my face as I wave it off as if it’s nothing and look back at my computer and laptop sat on the desk. What I didn’t see was when they were leaving, I assumed Coach told them I would be fine, Rasmus whispering that he would come back to see me after and Coach nodding his head as he closed the door behind him. I just continued my work planning on taking a break for about an hour, being good friends with the people who take care the rink, they let me use the ice when I want which I only use during times like these when I have to get rid of stress, shooting a puck and skating around does the job.
Wiping my face one more time, I make sure the email I just hit send on is sent before pushing my chair on wheels back and walk to the makeshift mudroom/closet where I keep my equipment and other things, it even has a little kitchen area with a small fridge and toaster oven on the counter, the room was just a little smaller than my office but it was beneficial. With my helmet on my head, gloves and stick in one hand and skates in the other, I make my way out of my office door and to the elevator. On my way there, I pass by the Coach talking alone with Rasmus, before I pass them I slow down enough to point in the direction of the ice looking Coach in a way of asking silently, very thankful when he nods his head. “Hey Y/N!” I hear Rasmus yell from where I am standing at the elevator, I turn to look at him still standing with the Coach “Do you mind if I hang out with you today?” He asks, I just shake my head as if saying I didn’t mind at all. It was the perfect idea and I know he wasn’t the only one thinking that because as he walks to me after saying goodbye to Coach, I see Coach smiles and give me a nod turning around to return to his office. It silent as we wait for the elevator, I feel his eyes on me and I don’t know what to think about it. He is probably judging me for how red my eyes still are, I sniffle a couple times before I reach the bench to tie my skates while he went to get his equipment.
Done with tying my laces, I notice he hasn’t returned yet but I didn’t really care since it was his choice to hang out with me, he probably found another rookie to hang out with. Making sure my visor is clean and that I can see through it as I place it on my head snapping the snaps to keep it on my head, I shove my hands into my gloves and grab my stick while stepping through the open bench door onto the ice. I skate the first three laps a low speed to not waste my energy, on the forth, I shift to skate backwards just in time to see Rasmus sitting on the beach watching me, it seems he has been sat there for a couple of minutes. After a few minutes, he tosses ten pucks on ice and I place them in formation of a drill I loved to do as a kid in the center circle to practice edge work and stop on the farthest blue line after moving the net closer. I tap my stick on the ice asking for a puck and I receive one that slowly glides to my stick, I wait looking at Rasmus to signal go in a position ready to take off. No whistle? Just clap your stick on the ice. With the clap of his stick when he steps onto the ice, I control the puck around the pucks while skating as fast as I can, taking a wrister top shelf when I successfully went through the pucks without touching them. The sound of clapping makes me look up from the ice to see not only Rasmus leaning against  the bench’s boards but also about half the team is and Coach is there is well, I can’t help but smile a little. I get back into position waiting for a puck but not before get a little advice from Buffalo’s captain “when going around the pucks, tuck and lean a little more in towards where you are turning, that was perfect other than that” Jack says, everyone else agrees. They continue to cheer until I am done with my ice session, feeling a lot better than before.
It has been a hour since we, Rasmus and I, got back to my office and haven’t said a word. While I continue my work, he watched TV with his shoes off and feet up laying across the couch. It’s all fine and dandy for a couple of minutes until I am reminded why I was sad,I looked through my phone notifications where a text message from my mom asking if I did my assignments still was and before I know it tears are streaming down my face but I am silent and try to make it seem like I am okay. I put my hands on my face to hide before Rasmus could see me but he already knows, I hear his socked feet walking towards me. “Hey, you’re okay shhh I got you it’s okay” he pulls me out of my chair and into him until my head is on his chest. I hug him back tightly for a few seconds before he pulls away to look me in the eyes and pulls me to the couch, he stops and sighs “I know we just met Y/N but I’ll be honest, I have completely fallen for you..........and I want to try a relationship because I hate thinking about you and another male and I want to be the one to make you happy and help you when you are upset. It broke my heart when I saw you crying earlier today, will you give me the chance?” all I can do is smile because he sounded nervous and nod my head, pecking him on cheek. He smiles back and lays down on his back before motioning me to lay on him, we cuddled and talked about what was going on and how to fix it until we fall a sleep. Alex Nylander even took a picture when walked into my office to see me and posted it Instagram “Aww look at the new couple all cuddled up” it got so many likes and lets just say I almost killed him when I woke up but didn’t because it looked adorable.
### I am sorry if it isn’t what requested, if you requested it. I don’t like writing about sadness, its just isn’t my style. if you don’t like it don’t be afraid to tell me and I will fix it. The skating to reduce stress is what I actually do, I go to skate about four times a week and it absolutely helps. I love feeling the wind in my face, through my helmet of course, when I pick up speed. I do plan on trying hockey but because i started late I have to wait until i am 18 to play for the local team. It gives me time to work on perfecting my skating so I am not upset about that. Oh! and the nickname Champ is my actually nickname at the rink, well my friend calls me that because he was there since I started at 15 and has told me I have gotten faster and better ###
****Reminder: I won’t be writing about Rasmus again, so please request another player and make sure I haven’t already written with that player. I did another Rasmus because I did have this in mind so I wrote it. I mean I would be glad to write more than one with the same player but my original plan was to, like I said, write one imagine for each player****

Home is about the people, not the place. (Rasmus Dahlin Fluff)
Hey y’all! I’m being super productive this week, lol. Anyway, this request has been on my list for a while becuase I had no clue how to write it. On monday, I got an idea and started this and I finished it tonight. Sorry for the delay in this one, fluff is way harder for me to write. Enjoy!
Tumblr media
When your father is the assistant coach of the Buffalo Sabres, you get roped into a bunch of things. I was the youngest of four, the only girl. So to say that my house was slightly insane would be an understatement. I was going to University of Buffalo because my Dad wanted me to stay close to home.
There were some perks though. I was the unofficial welcome rookie friend. Any rookies on the team were immediately sent to me. I had to say it was very fun. I got to make a lot of really good friends and be around the sport that I loved. I had been doing this since I was 16 and I never really wanted to stop.
Jack Eichel was the first rookie I acclimated to buffalo. Jack was an American already so he was one of the easiest ones to settle in. He had become my best friend. He was like a much nicer older brother who I could talk to about anything. The past three years, Jack was there for me during my first heartbreak, graduation, and starting my freshman year of college.
My entire family flew down to Dallas for the draft. With the first draft pick, I already knew we were selecting the young, talented Rasmus Dahlin. I was very excited to take him under my wing. Throughout the weekend, I had been a part of all the interviews and conversations with the prospects. My dad and the rest of the coaching staff liked to have me around to judge how the guys would be with female staff members. I was also there to ease the nerves of the players by relating to them.
Rasmus was shy. That was not an understatement. I knew that I was going to have to get him out of his shell. After we officially picked him, I was tasked with making him feel welcome in the Sabres family. The two of us went out for breakfast the next morning to try to get to know each other.
The smile on his face from ear to ear when I knocked on his hotel room door brightened my day immediately. I was surprised to have his mom already hugging me and thanking me for taking such good care of her son already.
I really enjoyed Rasmus’ company. He was very polite and made me smile. I knew I was in for it with this boy. I had never really had a crush on any of the other rookies I took in, but I had a feeling Rasmus was going to be my downfall. We were very close in age, me being about 9 months older.
The next week back home, it was time for development camp. Alex Nylander always liked to flirt with me. Rasmus didn’t seem to be taking that very well, judging by the scowl on his face. After the first day of camp, I took Rasmus and a few of the other rookies out to see Buffalo. A few of the boys were staying at my house and most of the others were with other team members or coach’s houses.
I had roped my father into letting Rasmus stay with us, since we had the other Swedes. It was a huge fun slumber party. At about 2 am the second night, I heard a knock at my bedroom door.
“Can I come in?” Rasmus whispered.
“Sure,” I said groggily.
“I can’t sleep,” he said softly. “I’m homesick.”
“Come ‘ere,” I said lifting my sheets inviting him in. “Come cuddle, it will make you feel better.”
“Thanks, Y/N,” he said snuggling up. “I really appreciate you taking me in and making me feel comfortable.”
“Of course,” I said yawning.
My alarm woke us up at 6 am blaring and waking me from my warm slumber. Rasmus was wrapped around my body like a koala bear.
“I think I might need you around during the season,” he giggled. “You make me feel at home.”
“I’m glad,” I smiled. “Just don’t let my dad find out. I’ll have my own apartment by the time the season starts so you are always welcome to come and make yourself at home.”
The rest of the week of development camp, Rasmus and I grew closer. His number was saved in my phone as Raspberry Darlin. Every night of the camp, he found his way into my bed. I couldn’t complain because I was always cold and Rasmus was like a giant blanket.
As camp came to a close, most of the other players staying in our house packed up to go home. I knew before the public, or even Rasmus himself, that we were officially signing him to play in buffalo this upcoming season. A few of the others we were signing like Alex Nylander and Casey Mittlestadt were also sticking around. The plan was to find them a place to stay with an older player or one of the coaches so we knew they would be taken care of.  It was looking like we were going to move all the rookies into their own apartment. Someone was going to have to cook for the poor boys, lord knows they can’t manage on their own.
The prospects we were signing were all invited to the practice rink for an official signing and celebration. I was a bit sad because this meant that Rasmus would soon be leaving for the summer. I was not looking forward to that.
After all the celebrations, Rasmus pulled me aside.
“I just wanted to thank you for making Buffalo feel like home,” he whispered.
“Home is about the people, not the place,” I replied with a smile. “I might be a bit forward in suggesting this but, I want to see where this relationship will take us. I really like you and I think we should try us out, only if you want.”
“I would love that,” Rasmus replied with a small smirk.

Some thoughts that I had that just needed to be written down... Now, I’m not going to say anything groundbreaking here, but writing things out helps me work through my own opinions. So read or don’t read, that’s up to you.
So if there’s one thing that Sabres fans have been through over the past four years, it’s been a perpetual state of ‘we’re going to be better next season.’ Now, that’s honestly just a normal product of the off-season, you kinda forget just how bad things were, changes are or aren’t made, promises are made and not fullfilled.
Just a quick outline of the off-season hype:
After 2014-15 (54 pts): Tank season had just finished, people believed things couldn’t get any worse, Eichel was drafted, and despite what everyone says, people were still looking forward to the season coming.
After 2015-16 (81 pts): the season was actually a pretty decent improvement over Tank Season, Bylsma promises that team will be at 95 pts the next season and in playoff contention, Jack and Sam had exhibited their chem in the last few weeks and people were excited to see them again.
After 2016-17 (78 pts): Big disappointing season,  steps promised not made, Tim Murray and Dan Bylsma are fired, Jason Botterill is hired, the team on paper seems to be a good one in theory.
After 2017-18 (62 pts): ....well.... 17-18 is gunna need its own paragraph here real Quick...
So 17-18 is arguably and also not arguably the worst season in Sabres history, even if the point total is slightly better than Tank Season. Like I said, on paper, the team looked to be a good one. People were excited with the change high up on the food chain, GMTM’s firing really opening people’s eyes to how fucked he kinda was and Jason Botterill pretty much built the Penguins into the perennial organization it is ( unlike Dan Bylsma who inherited his Cup winning team ).
But everyone knows that a team is more than just players thrown together --- there were teams in the NHL that on paper, did not promise to be as successful as the Sabres but were. And all that has to do with team chemistry and having players that wanted to not only play the game but play for each other.
The Sabres, to put it lightly, did not have that.
And that is why people say that 17-18 is the worst season in history, because even in tank year, while the players were BAD, they played with passion and put the best product they could out on the ice and people could see that. It couldn’t have been easy, especially in the end when people would cheer for the opposing team ( still not proud of that at all ). It was obvious this past season that there was a whole lot more not connecting than just passes. Players didn’t want to be there, they weren’t a team let alone a family that winning teams require, and that just drove the depressing circle around and around and around.
Which brings finally bring us to the off-season of the 17-18 Sabres, and why it’s so different and important.
Granted, had the Sabres not won the lottery, I might be writing a much different narrative, though in the end, I don’t think it changes what I say all that much. Besides that’s not what actually happened so who cares?
Before the lottery people were fed up and I don’t exaggerate when I say that had they not won the lotto, viewership would have gone down a metric ton. Which honestly, is pretty long for a team to keep it’s viewership when the product has been subpar at best. It’s the kind of city that Buffalo is ---they want to trust their teams and believe in them (ha Billieve), but for the Sabres, 17-18 was the last season people were going to take. The Sabres had finally entered the “prove it” stage to the fans.
But then, the Sabres win the lottery when no one was expecting them to. That in itself is important. I could talk another thousand words on why Draft 2018 is so much different than Draft 2015, but it boils down to: no one expected to win it and get Dahlin. It was lightheartedly joked about, but honestly, almost everyone was resigned to picking four. No one had this expectation or entitlement to winning the rights to draft Dahlin, and because of that, when the Sabres did win him, everyone was pleasantly surprised.
It completely changed the off-season landscape. With a few bounces of ping pong balls, GMBOT’s offseason work became a BIT easier. Certainly, that off-season hope was quickly reinstated with little to no work at all. Fast forward to the draft and to when Dahlin and the organization is free to speak on Dahlin + Sabres 4ever. And Dahlin certainly blew away everyone’s expectations: a prospect that loves us and excited to be here? I could write another 1000 words on this and its important, but maybe on another post. Point is, Buffalo has always loved players that love the city and will love them back. That’s one of the reasons why Casey is loved so much, and why the love for Dahlin practically skyrocketed.
Dahlin brings his own shot of hope, but that’s not the only thing the 18-19 Sabres have going for them and that is what makes this upcoming season so different to Post-Tank Season.
The thing about GMBOT is that he understands how organizations and perennial playoff teams are built, and unfortunately for him, the GMs before him drastically cut down the time he has to work with. That’s not stopping him though, he’s building this team right ---finally.
While Dahlin is a big piece of this off-season hope and the team going forward, he’s not the only reason fans should be excited for next year. It’s in the fact that Dahlin will not be alone. GMBOT is finally building the core that he wants, and it’s going to be the core that he wants: a youthful promising core age 18-23 that will grow and mature together into its prime. By my count, the Sabres will have: Dahlin, Jack Eichel, Sam Reinhart, Rasmus Ristolainen, Casey Mittelstadt, Linus Ullmark, and Brendan Guhle on the team next year and that doesn’t even touch on some of the periphery players that could make it out of camp. That is a lot of new blood and guess what? New blood, rookies change the culture.
Which brings me to my next point: Culture Change.
It’s been said a ton that the atmosphere in the dressing room is so so important. We saw it especially in Vegas, who was a team on paper should not have performed nearly as well as the team that made it to the Stanley Cup Final. It’s simple, good people who want to play hockey and want to play for each other.
The Sabres dressing room has been called a lot of things that boils down to toxic, and it showed on the ice. Perhaps helped along by Dahlin’s presence in that they want that dressing room to be perfect when he steps into it, this off-season has been dedicated to righting the ship in that regard ( while yes, beginning to patch up the many, many holes in the depth charts ).
Development Camp is a great example of this working. Assistant GM Randy Sexton said that they’re not just looking for good players but good people, and that it’s sometimes hard to find both. Dev Camp is a great example of the culture finally beginning to shift. It was stated that the atmosphere at Dev Camp was so much different from last year, that this was the best one in a long time. Amerks Coach Chris Taylor said that last year on the first day he had to stop about five times to talk to the players because they were nervous and making mistakes do to that.
This year? Taylor said, "I didn't have to stop it this time around. That shows you the leadership, because we always practice what we're going to do drill-wise. The attention to detail that they watched and how much they wanted to learn, that they're ready in the corners, ready to go. Just that right there, that maturity level and the leadership qualities means a lot to me, that they weren't just putting their head down and just going through another meeting."
Sticking with the culture change rule brings us to the (somewhat) controversial Ryan O’Rielly trade.
Skill-wise, there’s absolutely no reason for ROR to be traded. He did what was asked of him and was a large offensive piece to this team. As several others have stated before me, GMBOT can say all he wants that ROR didn’t fit into his young core (he’s 27), but everyone knows this was an improvement by reduction. I think had ROR not made the comments he did at the end of the season about losing his love for the game that he would have stuck around a little longer, but not much (he would have been moved at trade deadline this upcoming season, in my opinion --after Casey had proven he would be comfortable with 2C alone).
ROR was a very good player and a very nice man, but he was a downer in that dressing room and maybe there were other things happening as well that we’ll never quite get the full story on (namely, the Eichel and O’Rielly rift). The Sabres were always going to lose the best player in the trade when dealing with ANY trade involving him, but I am personally happy with the outcome of it. The Sabres have patched up the bottom six, gained a tremendous prospect in Tage Thompson, and the 1st and 2nd around picks next year. That is a tremendous haul and honestly more than anyone expected him to get in the first place.
What the ROR trade does is shake the core of the team ( something that needed to be done and ROR was the most ready choice ) and it fully hands the reigns over to the young core of Jack Eichel, Sam Reinhart and Co. Both Jack and Sam will be off their ELC contracts this upcoming season, they’re no longer rookies, and this has to be their team to take. Ridding the team of ROR helps ease that position along.
GMBOT also made the choice to trade Evander Kane (both a character piece and a ‘cannot afford in the future’ move) and Robin Lehner (much to the delight of fans everywhere). He is building his core and he’s saying to them, here, take over.
The Sabres culture is changing, and the approach is changing as well. It’s a copycat league and dareisay... the Sabres are slightly copying VGK. Sound fake? Just humour me a bit.
A lot of Vegas’ success was built on creating a team that loved each other and building a team out of basically, NHL rejects and giving them something to play for.
With the Sabres, we see that so far they have brought in the Blue’s Carter Hutton and prospect Tage Thompson. You hear the quotes in their post-signing/post-trade media scrums and you hear some interesting things, namely that both players felt extremely wanted by Buffalo. Hutton: "With Buffalo I was their guy and it gave me a lot of confidence.” Thompson: "Buffalo really wanted me and it's nice to be wanted.” Thompson also says some things along the line of feeling pigeonholed in STL and that the Sabres had big top 6 plans for him that he really liked and enjoyed having a team that had confidence in home.
It’s just interesting to me: Buffalo finally making players feel welcomed and giving them reasons to be thankful and to want to play here. Even Sheary (Pens got fucking robbed with that btw), was excited to help an upcoming young core and be on a team on the rise. With Sheary though, there is of course the factor that GMBOT was a big reason he was signed to the Pens in the first place.
To me, all these things just add up to a dedication to Culture Change.
People ( like my father ) criticize that past season, Housley, and GMBOT to no end and think they’re trash because they didn’t turn things around in one season, but the truth is that they never were going to do that. GMTM (and Darcy before him) did a lot of things to the organization that would take forever to heal. GMTM tried his best to make a quick turnaround, and in the process mined away what little foundation the Sabres had to begin with.
Well guess what people, you really shouldn’t be surprised: GMBOT said early on that he was going to take a year to learn the lay of Sabreland and figure out what needed to be done. And boy, what there a ton of shit that he found. This team was lightyears beyond the horrible he expected. And now, he’s finally making those key changes that need to be made. That man said he was going to make changes at the end of the disastrous 17-18 season and by god, he’s making them.
Darcy and Murray burned away years to try to be successful quickly and now and that was never going to work. When was the last time that the Sabres have had a late round gem? It’s been a while: Marcus Foligno was drafted 4th round. Olofsson was drafted 7th and could be a gem, we’ll have to see.
But GMBOT understands building through the draft, through Rochester, and through development. He is trying his best to fix the team now but while also setting the Sabres up for the future, and this is why the post 17-18 offseason hope is so different from off-season hopes from the past four years.
The Sabres have a lot going for them in years to come: the young gun core that will mature together, the prospects that excite people Dev Camp, the new blood in Dahlin and Mittelstadt, a lovable goalie duo that fans have been thirsting for since Miller was traded, a very tangible promise of an offensive defense, the obvious signs of culture change, the promise that this team is a family and it’s a family that loves its home of Buffalo.
Which is why I will end this as I have been saying for months now:
Sabres 2020, watch out NHL.

You’re Here- Sam Reinhart
Tumblr media
Alright anon, I kinda made this one a little angsty, but there's fluff and Jack Eichel added in, so it can't be too terrible right? I know nothing about Sam Reinhart (but he is cute anon) so I hope he seems like himself? And I mean Jack is Jack. Hope you all like it! Enjoy anon!
Warning: death
Anon Request: I loveeee your writing!!! Could do write something about Sam Reinhart? He's such a cutie I'm obsessed
~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/
You sat in your parents' house in Vancouver, surrounded by family. Only 10 minutes until the Sabres game and you could really use seeing your boyfriend again.
You had gotten a call Thursday from your mom that your grandmother had died. You were beside yourself, but Sam took care of you and helped you pack for the funeral. He drove you to the airport and saw you off, kissing you and hugging you tightly and reminding you to call him anytime. He couldn't go with you due to games and practices. He felt horrible about it, even though you knew it wasn't his fault.
"How you holding up?" your dad asked sitting next to you and wrapping an arm around your shoulders. You shrugged as you watched the pregame on your computer.
"I'm here. I miss her" you answered.
"I do too, baby girl" he said kissing your temple. "How's Sam?"
"They're talking about his hat trick and how now he might be starting a drought" you said rolling your eyes. "He's fine though."
              "Taking good care of you?"
"The best" you said, leaning your head on your dad's shoulder. "I really don't want tomorrow to happen."
"I know, but unfortunately it has to." You both looked up as your mom called for him. "Guess that's my cue. Let me know how Sam does?"
"Always" you said smiling. Your dad got up and you turned back to the computer screen. They showed the lines as they listened to the national anthems. Sam was starting. Good. Something to get your mind off the depressing feelings around you. As the puck dropped and the Sabres won the face off, your aunt sat down in the seat your dad had recently vacated.
"Hey" you smiled at her sadly before going back to the game.
"Is that appropriate to do at a time like this? Your family is here." You looked at your aunt.
"My boyfriend is playing" you said, pointing to number 23 skating around to the faceoff circle. Your aunt rolled your eyes.
"Is your imaginary boyfriend more important than family?" You felt the tears welling up. You just needed to watch this game. You had to leave him in the middle of his run to the playoffs and now your own family was giving you a hard time for it.
"It's one game" you whispered. Your mom must have seen the distress on your face because she came over and distracted your aunt, winking at you over her shoulder. 'Thank you' you mouthed. You saw your mom say something to your dad and he came over and took the computer from you, hooking it up to the TV.
"Let's all watch Sam, eh?" He sat down next to you, your uncles filtering into the room as well.
"Thanks" you whispered, cuddling into him. He put his arm around you and kissed the top of your head.
Two days down, two to go.
~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/
You jolted awake as your phone rang on the nightstand. You picked it up, seeing the picture of you and Sam that you took during your vacation.
              "Hey babe" you responded.
              "I'm lost" he replied.
              "What?" you asked.
"Ok so GPS said to make a left, but I think it's making up the road because I can't find it and we're staring at a barn and... I really don't think this is the right way." You could hear a voice in the background arguing about him being able to read a map to not bother you.
"Babe. Where are you and who's with you?"
"Jack" he said dismissively. "And I told you we're by the barn."
              "There's a barn in Buffalo?"
"No, babe, in Vancouver!" You were silent for a minute. "Hello?"
              "Why are you in Vancouver?"
"Because you're in Vancouver, listen I don't have time for this right now. We need sleep before the funeral. So barn, yay or nay?"
              "Nay" you responded. "Way nay."
"Shit" he mumbled. "Ok no problem, we'll just turn around and..." he trailed off as he heard a distinct 'I told you so!' from Jack. "Ok slight problem babe. Know where I can get gas by this barn?"
"I'll come pick you up" you said sliding out of bed. "Come on Vancouver boy. You haven't been gone that long" you teased.
"Listen, girlie, I don't want to hear it from you Ms. I got lost on the way to my boyfriend's hockey game!"
"It was the first game" you argued.
"Whatever. Listen we were supposed to turn on- Jack what road was that?" He paused listening. "Mhm you can totally read a map. Give it here, dumb dumb." There was shuffling in the background and silence a minute before Sam kept talking. "Ok we were supposed to turn on Dempsey? But there was absolutely ZERO road that was labeled Dempsey" he argued. "So we're somewhere on the road you're on before you turn on to Dempsey."
"Alright. I'll hopefully be there soon."
"Wait! You're going to hang up on me and leave me with Jack?"
"Babe, you’re the one who brought him." You could hear him squawk indignantly as you hung up. You slid on the sweatshirt you brought and tiptoed down the stairs, grabbing your dad's keys and your purse. "Oh my god its cold" you whined as you ran to the car barefoot. You hoped the car would warm up quickly.
You made your way out of the development and turned left off of Dempsey. Your boyfriend, and Jack, were hopeless with directions. He mentioned a barn and the only one you could think of was this way. Sure enough, half a mile down the road you spotted Sam and Jack sitting on the hood of the car in suits, eating. You made a U-turn in the middle of the deserted road and pulled up behind them.
"Looking for a ride?" you teased.
"Heck yeah!" Jack cheered. "What's the price?"
"Don't worry. I think only one of you can pay" you said with a wink. "I haven't snuck out during the night to pick a guy up in my car in a long time." Sam and Jack tossed their suitcases in the back and Jack fell into the car, Sam jumping in beside you. He leaned over and kissed you. "Hi."
"Hey babe. How you holding up?"
"Would be better if someone had scored" you teased.
"Ah Jack, you let her down" Sam teased.
"At least I letting her down is only because I missed the net. Ohhhhh! Burn!" Jack laughed. You chimed in with laughter, but Sam reached back and punch Jack's arm.
"Not that I'm not happy that you guys are here, but why are you here?"
"Babe, because you need me." You reached out and squeezed his hand in thanks. He picked your hand up and kissed it, setting it back down in his lap.
"I'm just here for the food. Any of your cousins single?"
"Yeah, but Connor won't be happy if you cheat on him" you added.
"I'm not dating McDavid!" You and Sam shared a look, snickering softly. You pulled into your driveway and shut the car off.
"Ok we need to be quiet. I didn't tell anyone I left." Both boys nodded and you ran to the door, holding it open for them, who was moving at a slower pace because they were wearing shoes. As you shut the door, your dad started down the stairs, stopping when he saw Jack and Sam.
"I'm not even going to ask" he sighed. "Spare bedroom's been taken. I've got a couch and a floor. Pick one." Jack took off for the couch and you pulled Sam up the stairs. You ditched the sweatshirt on the floor and climbed back into bed. Sam took his time stripping down to his boxers, but he soon joined you, pulling you close.
"How are you really doing?" he asked, kissing your forehead.
"Sad, tired, stressed. What about you?"
              "Worried" he responded softly.
"There's still a chance you can make the playoffs" you answered.
"No, not about the playoffs. If we make them, we keep playing. If we don't, then we can vacation sooner. I'm worried about you." Tears sprung to your eyes. "Love you, (Y/N)."
"I love you too, Sam. Thank you for being here."
"I'll always be here for you, babe. Now let's get some sleep. Tomorrow's going to be a long day." You nodded and cuddled closer to Sam, sighing as his warmth surrounded you, your eyes drifting closed.
Until you heard the knock on the door.
"Guys" Jack hissed. "Can I sleep on the floor? I heard a noise!"
~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/
It was getting kind of depressing again (which makes sense if your grandmother died, but still) so I added a cute little dramatic Jack! Let me know what you all thought! Up next: Andre Burakovsky!

I grew up with hockey like any other sport, casually and only really knowing/caring about my home team & only interacting with my fellow home team fans, but now I'm seeing there's like this whole tumblr fandom to the nhl and I was wondering what are like the reputations of the teams??? And obvi everyone has their own biases based on their faves but I was just curious (bc I love hearing about all of the reputations and drama and gossip that is 100% alive in the sports world)
um okay i really love this ask but i’m also Nervous to answer it bc obviously my views are gonna be based on my teams and tbh i don’t a ton about some of the teams. so let me just preface this by saying that i don’t intend to shit on anyone’s team. pls don’t come yell at me. i love y’all. i’m gonna put this under a read more bc it’s gonna be long af. this isn’t so much drama as it is just a primer on the teams bc i’m not looking to start drama.
Eastern Conference:
Metro Division:
Carolina Hurricanes (canes): not as relevant as they should be tbh. low fan attendance but some really solid players (highlights include jeff skinner and rookie sebastian aho, who just scored his first nhl hatty last night)
Columbus Blue Jackets (CBJ): haven’t been great really ever until this year. they have one of the best rookies in the league but also arguably the most hated coach in the league. they fire a cannon when they score which tj oshie called “the worst thing in hockey”
New Jersey Devils: they used to be known for playing really boring hockey. i don’t know a ton about them tbh. devils fans feel free to tell me more (nicely).
New York Islanders (Isles): usually Not That Good, despite having John Tavares as captain, but i’m salty bc they’ve beaten the caps multiple times this season. their ice sounds weird when the players skate. idk their arena is funky.
New York Rangers: The king, Henrik Lundqvist. in my experience, loud fans.  having a really solid season (the metro is STACKED - don’t let the standings deceive you). original six team.
Philadelphia Flyers: uhhh… honestly despite having friends who are flyers fans and them being the closest team to me other than my home team, i don’t know a ton. wayne simmonds is underrated (and now an all-star mvp!!!). they also have one of my personal fave rookies, travis konecny.
Pittsburgh Penguins (pens); one of the best teams in the league, no question. the fan base on here is slightly inflated but don’t get me wrong, they’re good. reigning stanley cup champs. as a caps fan, i will always hate playing the pens. if i tried to list their best players, i’d be listing most of the team. also they have sidney crosby so there’s that.
Washington Capitals (caps): MY BOYS!!!! known for being really solid in the regular season and perpetually choking in the playoffs (often against the pens). home to alex ovechkin, one of the most prolific goal scorers of all time, and nicklas backstrom, ridiculously underrated center to ovi’s left wing. first in the league rn.
Atlantic
Boston Bruins: original six team. not having a great season, but somehow still in a playoff spot? i’m not a bruins fan but i have a soft spot for their organization bc the players are some of the most vocal in their support for the lgbtqia community (esp brad marchand) and zdeno chara is a great captain. my bruins friends are Aggressive about them, but that’s kind of a boston sports thing in general.
Buffalo Sabres: jack eichel made them slightly more relevant, but they’re still Not Great.
Detroit Red Wings; another original six team. hands down most bizarre fan tradition that i still don’t understand. this is their last season in the joe, their current arena. won back to back cups in the 50s and 90s.
Florida Panthers: another team with low fan attendance. they’re dealt with a ton of injuries this season, and the somewhat unceremonious firing of their head coach. despite that, they’re only a few points out of the playoffs (the atlantic is all pretty close together rn except the habs).
Montreal Canadians: (habs) Very Enthusiastic Fans. Very French Canadian. mostly known on tumblr bc of the hatred for their head coach, the gallys, and the pk subban trade. more stanley cups than an other team by far. another original six team.
Ottawa Senators (sens); have never won the cup but make pretty regular playoff appearances. i don’t know a ton about them either.
Tampa Bay Lightning (bolts): riddled with injuries this season, including a major one to captain steven stamkos. there was a ton of drama surrounding jonathan drouin a few seasons ago, but as a non-lightning fan, i super don’t want to wade into that. they’re good now (when their players aren’t injured), but i think they’re gonna be incredible in a few years bc they had a ton of prospects at world juniors and pretty much all of them were amazing.
Toronto Maple Leafs (leafs): the loves of my life. haven’t won the cup in 50 years but will bring up their historic cup wins all the time. leaf fans Suffer (just ask steve dangle). the hockey gods have blessed us with incredible rookies, headlined by rookies of the month auston matthews, mitch marner, and william nylander. another original six team.
Western Conference:
Pacific Division:
Anaheim Ducks; named after disney movies. people hate ryan kesler (but his son is really cute). i hate losing to them and i have no concrete reason why.
Arizona Coyotes (yotes): as a fan of them, they suck. they have good players that can never seem to click. their captain shane doan just passed steve yzerman as the player with the 5th most games with a single franchise. shane doan is arizona hockey. currently getting talked about bc they’re the team that inspired auston matthews to start playing hockey. tumblr is still salty about them sending dylan strome back to the otters.
Calgary Flames: Johnny Hockey™
Edmonton Oilers; perpetual draft lottery winners. doing really well this season in large part to current league points leader and youngest captain in nhl history conald mcdonald (or connor mcdavid, as he’s better known).
LA Kings; i don’t know a ton about them but people seem not to like them. they have one of my least favorite players in the league.
San Jose Sharks: gained more fans bc they went to the stanley cup final last season. some of the best players in the league. famous/infamous for their holiday videos.
Vancouver Canucks: home to the Sedin twins, Very Important hockey people to know, Having a rough season.
Central Division:
Chicago Blackhawks: Nope.
Colorado Avalache (avs/aves): Yikes. They can’t catch a mcfreaking break this season. nate mackinnon crushed it with team north america over the summer. the avs are the one team doing worse than the coyotes.
Dallas Stars: one of the most popular teams on tumblr. not having a great season (partially bc of widespread injuries). great at goal scoring and not much else.
Minnesota Wild: First in the West rn and home to the current best goalie in the league. I’ve somehow become a wild fan this season.
Nashville Predators (Preds): Bright jerseys. the new home of pk subban. their goalies love each other. elina is gonna kill me for not knowing more about them. i really don’t want to get into m**e r***bero though.
St. Louis Blues: just fired their head coach. home to one of the best scorers in the league. beat the h**ks in the winter classic, which truly cleansed my soul.
Winnipeg Jets: have struggling with goaltending since the move from atlanta. currently gaining notice because of patrik laine, the 2nd overall pick in the 2016 draft, and nikolaj ehlers.

I thought that in this the year of someone's lord 2021 we'd realize that billionaire team owners aren't going to show up and reward you when you say a player is a selfish brat when he puts his own health and well-being first, but here we are
(And not for nothing this 'Jack is a selfish asshole who will never be anything because he's washed' narrative feels so familiar I half-expected to see Jack wearing a Blues jersey in his exit interview, just saying)

Jeff Skinner - We’re Having a Baby
Tumblr media
Masterlist
Word count: 1,869
To say I was nervous would be an understatement. I am about to tell my boyfriend of two years that I’m having his baby. We have talked about having kids but after we got married not now. I’m happy to have this baby I just hope he is.
I might be happy about having this baby but there a little problem. Jeff and I live and two different states. He lives in Buffalo while I live and South Carolina.
The Sabres are playing the Hurricanes tonight. I wasn’t planning on going to the game because I had to work but after I found out I was pregnant I knew I had to got to the game. I knew I had to tell Jeff.
I walked into the hotel that the team was staying at. I then realized that the hotel staff won’t tell me which room the guys are staying in. I sat down at one of the couches that were in the lobby closed my eyes and sigh heavily. I knew I should have told Jeff I was coming.
“Y/N?” I must have jumped ten feet in the air. I looked to see how said my name.
“Jack!” I stood up from the couch.
“What are you doing here? Jeff never said you were coming.” He walked over to me and gave me a hug.
“I wasn't supposed to come but I needed to see to Jeff and I didn’t think about telling him I was coming.”
“Well, I happen to be his roommate this trip. I am going to get a quick bite to eat with Sam.” He went into his pocket and handed me the key card. “He is the key to the room. We are staying in room 314 on the third floor.” I took the key card.
“Thank you so much, Jack.”
“Don’t thank me. Go see Skins. When I left the room he was still taking his nap.” I smiled at him and we said our goodbyes.
Once I got to the door. I took a deep breath and put the key card in the door waiting for it to flash green and opened the door. As soon as I opened the door I noticed all the lights were still off. The only sources of light were coming from the window. Which didn’t give much light due to the blinds.
I walked in to see Jeff sleep on the far bed. I smiled at him. I missed sleeping next to him. I missed waking up in his arms. I missed everything about him. I looked at the time and noticed that he should wake up soon. I went over to him and sad at the edge of the bed and went down to kiss him. He must have been up because he pulled away looked at me and pulled me into bed with him.
I let out a little yell as he did. I relaxed he had pulled me to where I was laying right on top of him and he had his arms wrapped around me.
“I would love to wake up from naps like that every time.” He smiled at me and lean in for a kiss. Which I happily meet him halfway. I pulled back I little. “Don’t get me wrong or anything but what are you doing here? I thought you had to work?” I sighed rolled off him and sat up.
“I did have to work but I needed to see you.” He got out of bed and stood in front of me.
“Is everything okay?” He looked worried.
I got up and went over to where I set my bag down. “Everything is fine. I just-“ I looked at the gift I’m going to him Jeff to tell him I’m having a baby. “I think it’s just better if I give you this.” I handed in the navy blue gift bag and smiled at him. The smile that is on his face now I hope it doesn’t leave.
He walked over to me and took the bag out of my hands. I watched him nervously. He pulled out the tiny little onesie and read what was on it. ‘Sabres newest fan’. He looked out it for a bit and looked up at me. I couldn’t tell what he was thinking.
“Are you saying you’re?" That smile that I wanted to stay on his face disappeared.
“Yes, I’m pregnant.” I watched has hep his hand on his face and sat down on the bed and looked at the onesie.
“This isn’t a joke? You're really having a baby?” I didn’t like the way he said that.
“Yes, we are having a baby.”
“Y/N I have a game.” He set the onesie on the bed and got up and grab his suit.
“That’s all you have to say?” I looked at him shocked. I didn’t expect this from him.
“I have to be at the arena in half an hour what else do you want me to say?”
I just shook my head grabbed my things and walked out the door. I could feel the tear building up in my eyes. Once I shut the door I heard it open again.
“Y/N where are you going?” I didn’t look back at him.
“It doesn’t matter.”
“It does matter.” I turned around to look at him.
“I just told I was having your baby and you-”
“Jeff? Y/N?” I heard a different voice say our names. I looked behind Jeff and see Casey Mittelstadt. “Is everything okay?” Well, he probably just heard I was pregnant.
“Yeah, everything is fine,” Jeff spoke first. Casey walked to stand next to Jeff.
“I guess congrats are in order.” Casey looked at Jeff with a big smile on his face but Jeff still hasn’t smiled since he opened that gift bag I gave him. I rolled my eyes and pressed the elevator button to go down.
“Don’t worry Casey if he doesn’t look happy. He isn’t too fond of the idea of having a baby apparently.” The elevator’s doors opened I got in and pressed the toddy button.
“Y/N wait.” I saw Jeff waiting to the elevator but he was too late the doors had closed.
That wasn’t what I was expecting.
Jeff’s POV
“Dude, what just happened?” I looked at Casey and back at the elevator Y/N just got on.
“I just fucked up that’s what happened.”
“I thought you would be happy about having a baby.”
“I was caught off guard. I don’t know what I was thinking. I have wanted to start a family I want to start one with Y/N but I didn’t think it was going to be this soon.”
“What about the ring?” I looked at him and sighed.
I have been planning of proposing to Y/N for about a month now. I don’t want to propose to her now. I don’t want her to think I want to marry her because of the baby.
“I don’t know. I don’t know anything anymore.”
“Well, I know what you should do right now.” I looked at him waiting for him to continue. “Go get your girl and tell her you want this baby and that you were just being a little bitch before.”
Y/N’s POV
I held in all the tears I knew that were about to fall. Once the doors opened I went straight for the front doors. I saw out the corner of my eye a couple of the Sabres players but I kept walking hoping they different see me. The last thing I need or Jeff needs right now is the whole team knowing this.
I was walking the streets not knowing where I was going. I had bought a ticket to the game. Right now I was kinda wishing I didn’t. I didn’t have anywhere else to go but to the arena. I didn’t think I would need a hotel because I thought I would stay with Jeff.
Once I got to my seat I soon regret going to the game and the seat I picked. The Sabres went out doing warm-ups and I was two rows from the ice. I saw Jack reading a couple of the fans sighs and looked at me and smiled. He then skated off and saw that he went straight to Jeff, well great. I saw Jack point over to where I was and Jeff follows his hand. Jeff then nodded and skated off towards the locker room. What the hell was that?
I looked up at the clock that was counting down till when the game starts and it said fifteen minutes left. I sighed and leaned back in my chair. A couple walked passed me to got to their seats and I noticed someone stopped at my row. I guessed that they were waiting for me to get up for them to get by but before I was able to move the got down lower for me to see their face and I noticed it was Kevin one of the Sabres Trainers.
“What are you doing here?”
“He wanted to see you.” I knew exactly who he was talking about. Jeff.
“I don’t think that is a good idea.”
“Y/N please.” I looked at the clock again and saw it had eleven minutes left. If I could I know it will be short.
“Fine.” I got up and started walking the stairs following Kevin.
So many different things were going through my head while going to see Jeff. I didn’t know what to think.
Walking down the hall I stopped when I saw Jeff standing there talking to Jack and Sam. They were all in there jersey and skates on. Sam looked at me and then said something to Jeff which made him look my away and start walking over to me.
“Look Jeff I know you not too happy about this but we can talk about this another day. You have a game to play. We will-“ Before I was finished Jeff placed both hands on the sides of my face and placed his lips on mine. I was taken back by the kiss it was the last thing I was expecting. I pulled back and I was about to speak but he put a finger on my lips to stop me.
“I was an ass Y/N I know that. Your right I’m not happy about this happy.” I looked away from him. I don’t want to be here. “I’m ecstatic about having this baby. It might not be the way we both planned but I don’t care I love you and I love this baby.” I looked at him in shock.
“Skinner!” We both looked to see who said his name. “We have a game to play let's go!” Coach yelled.
Jeff ignored the coach and looked back at me. “We’re having a baby.” A smiled up at him.
“We’re having a baby,” He gave me a quick kiss and walked towards the nice.
“I’ll see you after the game.” He looked over his shoulder and there was that smile I love so much.

Ramblings: Updates on Crawford, Pastrnak, Okposo; Trade Deadline Round-Up – February 26
Kyle Okposo returned to the lineup for the Sabres on Monday night following his recovery from a concussion suffered in a fight. This is significant because Okposo’s concussion history is very well documented and there were fears this would be a long-term issue. You can’t help but be fearful for a player with his kind of history returning to action so soon but if he feels good and the doctors clear him, there’s not much that can be done. Let’s just hope that he decides to keep his gloves on his hands from now on.
*
We got an update on David Pastrnak and it appears he’ll be out for two more weeks. After that point, it’s a matter of him being comfortable playing with some sort of brace. That means
*
Corey Crawford has been activated off the injured reserve by the Blackhawks having recovered from his concussion. His injury history, like Kyle Okposo’s, is grossly concerning. Let’s just hope he can finish his career without further issue. Fingers crossed.
*
After the injuries suffered over the weekend, both Kris Letang and Brian Dumoulin are not expected to suit up in Pittsburgh’s game tonight against Columbus. There’s some thought that Letang’s injury is minor but details right now are sketchy. All the same, if it’s only a game or two, Letang fantasy owners can breathe a big sigh of relief. When we get further updates on either player (which may not happen given the time of year), we’ll pass them on.

Perhaps lost in the trade deadline shuffle on Monday afternoon was this news about Andreas Athanasiou:
Andreas Athanasiou is going to center for the rest of the year
— Max Bultman (@m_bultman) February 25, 2019
The immediate plan seems to be lining Athanasiou with Filip Zadina to see if they can develop some chemistry for next season. That gives AA some additional fantasy value in face-off leagues but I’m really more interested to see how he and Zadina mesh together. It gives people a reason to watch the Wings over the final six weeks.

My last Ramblings was Thursday prior which means I’ve missed out writing on much of the goings-on in the NHL over the last several days. I was able to weigh in on the Matt Duchene trade but that’s about it. I want to go through the deals again just to offer my opinion.

Late Sunday night (or early Monday morning, depending where you are), the San Jose Sharks acquired Gustav Nyquist for a pair of picks. You can read Dobber’s take here.
To review some things I’ve written on Nyquist in the last year, you can read about his lack of secondary assists here and need for power-play minutes here. His secondary assist rate has indeed rebounded from a poor 2017-18 rate to the second-highest of his six full-ish seasons. Though he hasn’t earned more PP ice time, Dylan Larkin’s shooting percentage at five-on-four rebounded from a disastrous 2017-18 mark and that has helped Nyquist add some more PP assists. Those are a couple reasons he’s having the season he’s having.
As far as the move to San Jose goes, this is likely a downgrade for him. I disagree with Dobber on one thing and that’s where he slots on the team. There are only two right-handed shots currently in the team’s top two lines, Joe Pavelski and Joonas Donskoi. It’s possible they go with three lefties on the second line, pushing Donskoi to the third line, but I think it makes more sense for Nyquist to replace Marcus Sorensen on Thornton’s line. We’ll see how that shakes out.
Nyquist’s fantasy fortunes hinge on his placement. Currently, five of the six forwards in San Jose’s top-6 is averaging at least 17 minutes a game and four are over 18 minutes. Meanwhile, the bottom-6, naturally, is about 15 minutes or fewer. Nyquist has moved to a better team but it’s not necessarily a better situation fantasy-wise.

There was a lot of hubbub on social media following the trade of Brandon Montour from Anaheim to Buffalo. You can read Ian’s take on that trade here.
The hubbub was largely around whether Montour’s poor 2018-19 season is a reflection of him, his team, his coach, or some combination of the three. To be sure, Anaheim’s injuries have negatively affected almost everyone on that roster. All the same, Randy Carlyle was the coach for Montour’s entire NHL career to date. Laying this year at Carlyle’s feet while disregarding the previous two seasons is disingenuous at best.
Though he’ll have time to develop his defensive game, at this point, he’s a much better offensive defenceman than a defensive one. His blue line defence has been subpar for his career and he doesn’t do a good job limiting shots from the dangerous areas (from Hockey Viz):
There’s a very real possibility that Montour performs similarly to new teammate Rasmus Ristolainen: passable offensively but poor defensively, and the offence doesn’t make up for the lack of defence. It’s a question, then, of whether Montour can flourish under a new coach on a new team.
The gamble is sending prospect defenceman Brendan Guhle and the first-rounder for Montour. I’ve always liked Guhle’s ability at both ends and was seemingly coming into his own in the AHL the last year or so. He’ll get an immediate shot in the NHL with Anaheim, though that’s obviously a very poor situation.
Fantasy-wise, this isn’t great for Montour. He goes to a team where he’ll definitely be behind Rasmus Dahlin on the power-play chart, and most likely also behind Ristolainen. Without power play minutes, there’s unlikely to be much offensive production playing for a mid-pack offensive team. The upside for Montour in these conditions is something like Mattias Ekholm has been for most of his career: 8-10 goals and 30-35 points. I know Ekholm has exceeded that this year but it seems more a career year-type thing than a new norm.

I’m going to dive a lot deeper on the Fiala/Granlund trade in my next Ramblings. As far as the players are concerned, I don’t think it’s quite fair to just look at surface stats and spend a couple hundred words on it. I really want to dig in so I’ll do that on Thursday. For now, I’ll say this is a lot more even than people will care to admit.
You can read Dobber’s angle on this swap here.

You can read Dobber’s take on the Kevin Hayes trade here.
Though Hayes is on pace for some career bests, a lot of that is related to ice time. In fact, he’s not even sporting the highest points/60 minutes at five-on-five of his career (2.24), that actually came in his rookie year (2.33). This year isn’t really an aberration of production, either: from 2015-18, he was tied for 81st among 264 forwards with at least 2000 minutes in primary points/60 minutes. He was in the same range as names like Jack Eichel, Dylan Larkin, Joe Pavelski, and Anze Kopitar. Now, he did that largely in a middle-six role and not playing huge minutes like this year, but that’ll be much the same case in Winnipeg. Only now, he’ll get to play with the likes of Patrik Laine, Kyle Connor and Nikolaj Ehlers.
Hayes isn’t really a goal scorer. It’s not to say he can’t score, but he’s never averaged 2.5 shots per game, has cracked 20 goals once, and he may not get there this year. Winnipeg doesn’t need him to score, though. They have a plethora of goal scorers. They need players who can generate conditions conducive to scoring, and players to find their goal scorers. Hayes can do exactly that (from CJ Turtoro’s viz):
So, yeah, he’s not nearly as good as Anze Kopitar at exiting his zone or gaining the opposing blue line, but you can see a similar profile, if watered down.
Hayes is also a player who has developed his defensive ability as his career has matures as well. The viz below from Hockey Viz isolates an individual player’s impact offensively and defensively at five-on-five. Over the last two years, he’s helped generate a lot of dangerous chances for the Rangers while limiting them at the other end:
It does seem Hayes has really hit his stride over the last year or two. He was always solid offensively, but he’s really upped his defensive game of late. He is a good two-way centre who can be the playmaker that someone like Laine needs while covering responsibly, while not needing to play 18-19 minutes a night.
Though his scoring environment has improved, expectations for Hayes need to be kept in check. He’ll likely see 2-3 fewer minutes in ice time per night and that kind of loss is tough to make up, especially considering Hayes is already enjoying his highest on-ice team goal rate of his career. Fantasy owners should be happy with 12-14 points over the balance of the season.

Once the Blue Jackets acquired Matt Duchene, it was obvious they were pushing all in this year and Artemi Panarin was off the table. That meant Mark Stone was the clear-cut big fish, and he landed in Vegas in exchange for Erik Brannstrom, Oscar Lindberg, and a 2nd round pick. You can read Ian’s take here.
There’s not much to discuss here. We know how good Stone is; you’d only need Jason Pierre-Paul’s hand to count the number of right wingers in the NHL better than him. It’s a matter of where he slots, and as good as Reilly Smith and Alex Tuch are, Stone is now easily their best right winger.
Some people may see the return as light, but we don’t know what was going on behind the scenes. Calgary said they wouldn’t trade their top prospects or a first-round pick, Winnipeg traded a first-rounder for Kevin Hayes so trading more seemed unlikely, and the number of teams that A) are pushing for a Cup, and B) has a truly top-shelf prospect is limited. Maybe Nashville wasn’t willing to part with Eeli Tolvanen? If that were the case, we could cross San Jose, Calgary, Nashville, Winnipeg, and Tampa Bay (because they were standing pat) off the list. How many Cup contenders are left with the pieces necessary to acquire Stone? The Islanders could if they were willing to part with their first rounders from last year, which they may or may not have been. Possibly the Bruins? The list is short. So, while some people may view the return as light, the number of teams were a trade would be possible would similarly be light. Getting someone like Brannstrom, who has every look as a future top-pair guy, is a pretty good result.
*
I’ve long been a fan of Marcus Johansson but it’s more of a real-world thing than a fantasy thing. I imagine he’ll be lining up on the third line, which is fine, but he probably won’t be on the top PP unit. Third-line minutes as a two-way player with limited PP time doesn’t scream fantasy value to me. I think this is a decent deal for the Bruins to shore up an area of weakness for this year and for the next couple years, but it doesn’t move the needle fantasy-wise.
You can read Dobber’s take on the deal here.
*
Wayne Simmonds going to Nashville is a bit confusing to me. At this point, he’s a power-play specialist and I assumed that Brian Boyle was acquired for exactly that reason. I guess they have one for each PP unit now?
More interesting to me is Ryan Hartman going the other way. Hartman was a guy I was really excited about when he was traded from Chicago, thinking he could settle in the middle-six and provide some scoring both at even strength and on the PP.
Needless to say, it’s been a disaster.
I’m still a believer in Hartman. His shot rates are still good and considering he was playing third/fourth line minutes with no PP production, 10 goals and 20 points this year isn’t bad. He likely plays on the third line and second PP unit for the Flyers which means his fantasy value will be flimsy. This probably ends up being a better real-world deal than a fantasy deal, though.
You can read Cam’s take on the trade here.
