Tumblr media
Barnes moved into the Avengers Tower a month ago and you’ve only talked to him twice – once when he first arrived and you had to introduce yourself and once during an awkward encounter in the elevator. He mostly kept to himself and only ever talked to Steve. It was a miracle to catch him alone and you weren’t the best at striking up a conversation either. Despite your limited encounters you knew a lot about him. Your closest friends at the compound were Natasha and Steve and both of them had a lot to say about the White Wolf.
You’ve heard both sides of his story, the Winter Soldier story as well as the story of the brave Howling Commando, and despite all the people telling you how unstable and dangerous he was, you couldn’t help but admire him just a little. And it wasn’t just because of his killer baby blue eyes and those soft pink lips and his perfect nose and his beautiful brown hair – I mean sure those things were an added bonus but you really admired because of the of the person he was before the war.
You joined the team after the Sokovia Accords but Cap had filled you in on some of the details. Sometimes, when you were both tortured by sleepless nights, he told you about his childhood, before the serum, when he was a meek little kid with asthma. He told you how Bucky had always looked out for him and how he stayed by his side when his mother died. And for some reason, when you look at Bucky you could still see the man that he used to be. You weren’t afraid of him, you didn’t think of his as a weapon or a ruthless assassin. He was a tortured soul who was forced to commit horrible crimes and you couldn’t hold that against him. But most of all you admired him, because something about what he went thorough felt familiar to you and that was a new feeling.
Life as an Avenger isn’t easy but with your incredible stealth skills rivaling Natasha’s own and a pretty good aim, not to mention your pyrokinetic abilities you make do. You joined the team a couple years ago and since then you’ve been fighting beside them. You have a good relationship with almost everyone on your team, everyone except for Bucky Barnes – the former Winter Soldier.
On a Mission
Steve had sent you and Natasha on a mission along with Bucky and Clint. Nat and you were infiltrating the base of a terrorist organization while Bucky and Clint took the high ground and covered for you both. “Alright, let’s split up. You go right, I’ll go left and we’ll rendezvous with the boys on the roof for extraction,” ordered the Widow when you came up on a corridor and you did as she said.
The Colt was heavy in your hands as you rounded a corner with caution. “Approaching south-east corridor,” you reported. “Yeah, I see you,” Bucky’s voice came in through your earpiece. You halted by the door when you heard hushed chatter before you kicked the door in. As soon as you did three men in tactical gear started firing at you. You got down on the floor and rolled to the other end of the room in a swift motion, dodging their bullets and shooting two of them on the leg before pointing the barrel of your gun at the third man, “Drop your weapon,” you snarled.
You didn’t see one of the injured men pull out his hidden pistol but you did hear a booming gunshot come from the woods. You whipped your head around to follow the sound and saw the cracked window pane with a bullet hole before you saw the dead terrorist on the ground. “You need to watch your back y/n,” Bucky’s voice spoke again, playful or annoyed you couldn’t tell. The mission was a success, you managed to prevent a terrorist attack and collect valuable intel on the organization as well.
You were still a little dazed when you met up with the rest of the team on the roof. “Hey, thanks for saving my ass back there,” you told the sniper; he just gave you a subtle nod. The ride back home passed by quickly with Barton and Natasha bickering all the way. Bucky didn’t speak the whole time except for smiling a little from time to time due to the banter. You couldn’t help but stare at him, the way the early morning sunlight hit his blue eyes – it looked like the ocean, glinting and sparkling - you’d never seen a more beautiful sight. He almost caught you staring and you quickly looked away as your cheeks flushed red. After that you just kept your eyes glued to the floor.
After the mission
It was the next day after the mission and you were sparring with Steve Rogers. When you got to the training room, you saw Sam lifting weights and Natasha and Wanda going over some hand to hand combat techniques. Wanda insisted that her enhanced abilities were more than enough but Nat and Steve had argued that she needed to be strong despite her powers. Steve dropped his dumb bells and walked over to you. You both got into your fighting stances.
“Good job on the mission yesterday,” Steve said as he dodged your punch, “but you know, it would’ve been a lot easier if you had used your powers.” You blocked one of his punches and attempted to kick him, “It was an old building Steve, I didn’t want to risk setting things on fire.” He stepped aside, missing your kick and attempted to catch you in a choke hold but you got away. “Isn’t that your power? Setting things on fire?” You were getting a little frustrated now and tried to knock him off his feet, “It’s not that simple. If the fire had gotten out of control, it could have killed everyone in the building, including me and Nat.” Steve threw a roundhouse kick that connected with your face, you stumbled back.
“You need to believe in yourself y/n,” he dropped his hands, no longer trying to fight, “You trained for months with Wanda and Tony and you made really good progress. You single – handedly put out a 20 acre forest fire, for god’s sake. You performed incredibly well in, what was it, spontaneous combustion? You can control the temperature and intensity of the flame! And according to Bruce that’s the hardest ability to master in pyrokinesis!” he sounded impressed, “I’m pretty sure you could’ve controlled a small fire in an old building.”
“It’s different when it’s in a lab, under a controlled environment, with Tony holding 50 fire extinguishers to your head. We were in the field and you know…like I said I couldn’t …I just didn’t want to risk it. Can we stop talking about this now?” You really hated having these conversations with Steve but he still brought it up after every mission. “y/n,” he paused, trying to find the right words, “what happened in Chicago, it wasn’t your fault…” You cut him off  “I said I don’t want to talk about, Cap. Now are we done?” your snapped. He threw his hands up defensively and agreed to not bring it up for the rest of the training session that actually turned out to be quite fun. Captain connected a few more punches and kicks but you also managed to get in a few hits, not that it had any effect on the super soldier.
You went back to your room, took a quick shower and got ready for your briefing with Rhodes. You were being deployed on another mission in 9 hours – you’re playing bodyguard to a high profile stateswoman. You were wearing a dark blue t-shirt with a grey hoodie and black ripped jeans. Before you left your room you picked up an iPod and a pair of earphones from your table. You had a pitstop to make before you went to the briefing.
You went down to the third floor and knocked on Bucky’s door. He opened the door wearing a long sleeved red t-shirt and grey sweatpants, still sweating from his own training session, you assumed. He wasn’t wearing the glove on his left hand and the metal gleamed when the sunlight hit it. His hair was soaked with sweat.
“Y/n, hi,” he said, surprised, “are you looking for Steve?”. “No, I wanted to talk to you actually. Can I come in?” you asked. “Uh, yeah sure,” he opened the door wider and stepped aside to let you in. He ran his hands through his hair to push it away from his face and you had to pry your eyes away from him. You decided to look around his room to avoid staring at him. This was the first time you were actually seeing his room. It was completely bare – no photos, no posters, no personal items or decorations of any kind; his room was clean and neat and new, and it was strange. He had barely made any changes to the standard room he was provided with, besides adding a few books and pencils to his table.
“I just wanted to thank you for saving me yesterday, so I got you this,” you handed him the iPod and earphones. “No offence, but I noticed you’re not that good with technology. So I got you an iPod, it’s fairly simple to use and I already added some songs to it,” you said, watching him inspect it. “Thank you y/n, but you don’t have to thank me for saving you. Cause that’s what team mates do, they look out for each other, they have each other’s backs and the next time I can count on you to save my ass.
“And, uhm… no offence to you, but I don’t really like most of … today’s music, “ he gave you a soft smile and held out the device towards you. “Well in that case, consider it as a … a memento,” you pushed it back towards him, “to commemorate our first mission together! As for the music, I handpicked the songs that I thought you might like. Just give it a try, old man.” Bucky gave you another soft smile, “Alright, doll. I’ll check it out.” Your cheeks flushed red at the nickname and you quickly turned away and tried to play it cool, “See you around, Sergeant,” you winked at him before closing the door behind you.
He had been surprised to see you standing at his door. You barely came down to his floor, unless it was to talk to Steve or Nat. But that was because you rarely stayed at the compound for a long period of time. You kept jumping on from one mission to the next, just like you were doing now.
Inside his room, Bucky’s own cheeks turned red the moment you shut the door. Just the wink or the “Sergeant” was enough to make him blush but the combination of both made him weak in the knees. He looked at the iPod and smiled as he plugged in the earphones.
He lied faced down on the bed and started thinking about your last mission. The whole time he had been covering you, watching you carefully as you swiftly moved through the corridors, taking down your enemies with ease. He thought about how he panicked every time you went out of his sights, how protective he felt throughout the whole mission. He remembered how beautiful your eyes looked on the roof when the sun shined on them.
The Briefing
“So, that concludes this meeting. Just remember, this is a big deal for the Avengers so bring your A game,” Rhodes said dropping his files on the table, “And y/n, pick out some better clothes.” You looked down at what you were wearing and was a little offended. But you remembered what Rhodey said, the Avengers were already in the bad books of the government and you didn’t want to risk disappointing a stateswomen, even if it was just clothing. So you decided to pick some formal clothes that were comfortable enough to fight in.
He shook his head, trying to collect his thoughts. It took him a minute to figure out the iPod and when he listened to the music on it, he was mildly surprised. Some of the songs reminded him of the 40’s and his childhood. You really knew his taste in music. He started thinking about you again when ‘From Eden’ (by Hozier) started to play but his thoughts were cut short by a knock on his door. He opened it eagerly hoping you had come back but was mildly disappointed to find Steve instead.
About an hour later, you found yourself wearing a dark green suit with a black shirt underneath. You had paired it with black boots (in case you needed to run) and black fingerless gloves, your colt was hidden in your holster and you had another gray pistol hidden in your boot along with a knife – formal enough you thought as you looked at yourself in the mirror. You took a deep breath and calmed yourself before walking out of your room.
You were making your way down to the garage when you ran into Bucky and Steve watching a movie in the living room. They turned around when they heard the faint clicking sound of your boots.
“New look y/n?” Cap asked as he checked out your outfit.
“Yeah, but don’t get used to it,” you joked, “this is a one-time thing.”
Cap picked up on the wavering in your voice, “Are you nervous?” he asked softly.
“Yeah, is it that obvious?”
Bucky interjected, pausing the movie, “You look great doll. And don’t worry about the mission, you’ll do great like always.”
“Thanks Buck,” the compliment made you fluster a little.
“Bucky’s right y/n. Fury’s sending you on this mission because you’re one of the best. You got this,” Steve added
You nodded, “Thanks for that guys. I better get going or I’m going to be late.”
“Wait, you’re leaving right now? The meeting starts 5 hours from now. You still have a lot of time left,” Bucky’s voice betrayed the disappointment in his voice – he was about to invite you to watch the movie with him and Steve, try and spend some more time with you before you left for the mission
“Yeah, but I’m going to the site early, check for possible sniper nests and just do some recon. You know, the usual,” you shrugged, hoping that you’ve convinced Steve. You didn’t. “Y/n you already did all of that…three times. And also you have a field team to do that for you. You don’t have to be there so early.”
“I know that Cap, I just like to be in control,” you said as you sped down to the garage before either of them could protest, “Enjoy your movie, I’ll see you soon”
“She just got back from a mission, why is she rushing to another one so soon?” Bucky turned to Steve, after watching you run away from him, “and this is not even the first time she’s done that. Does she hate us or something?” A hint of sadness crept into his voice as he uttered the last words. Maybe she hates me, maybe she doesn’t feel safe at the tower with the Winter Soldier around, he thought to himself.
“She doesn’t hate us Buck. It’s just everyone’s got their own baggage you know,” Steve said reaching for the remote in Bucky’s hands but he pulled it away, “What do you mean?”
Before Steve could answer, Natasha grabbed the remote form Bucky’s hands and jumped on to the sofa between them, crushing them, “What are you fossils gossiping about?” she quipped as she pressed play. “Just y/n. She left for her mission early,” Cap answered her, turning his attention to the movie. “Yeah, she always does that, what’s new?” Nat said nonchalantly while reaching for the popcorn.
“But why? Why does she keep doing that? She just got back from a mission and might I add that she was nearly killed and now she’s racing to go to another mission five hours early. She never stays at the tower for longer than two days. Even if she does, she’s always at the gym sparring with stupid Sam,” Bucky was breathless and frustrated when he finished, he didn’t even realize that he was ranting and he didn’t notice Nat staring at him with a knowing smile. Steve was looking at him, wide – eyed and confused.
“What’s it to you? Why do you care what she does?” Nat asked, an evil smirk on her face. “I don’t care, it’s just that, she’s exhausting herself and she barely sleeps and the nightmares and…” Bucky trailed off when he finally noticed the scrutinizing eyes on him. He turned his head looking at Nat and then Steve and asked, “What?” in an innocent and tiny voice.
“How do you know about her nightmares?” Steve asked. Bucky stayed silent, taking a moment to find the right words, “I had a nightmare the other day and I…and I came to see you and I saw you in the kitchen comforting her and she was crying. And other times, she stands outside your door, just pacing – like she’s wondering whether or not she should knock. I never said anything because I didn’t want to make it awkward,” he said, looking down at his hands.
“So you’re stalking her, huh?” Natasha said, maintaining the smirk on her face.
“I wasn’t stalking her! I just .. ran into her,” Bucky retorted angrily, turning to look at Nat.
“No need to get angry Sergeant. You have a thing for the fire bender. You should ask her out. You guys would make a really cute couple,” the Widow joked.
“No I don’t. I just care about her as a team mate, like team mates do,” Bucky was mildly annoyed now.
“Yeah, like you cared about Sam when he broke his ankle during flight training.”
“It wasn’t broken, it was sprained and he was being a baby about it.”
“Bucky, do you like her?” Steve asked. Everything made sense now – how Cap was able to land a punch a every time you walked into the gym because Bucky got distracted, how he kept asking Steve about your missions whenever you were gone, how he left Tony’s parties right after he spotted someone flirting with you.
“You know what, I’m done with this conversation,” Bucky got off the couch and walked over to his room. He shut his door with a loud thud.
“He does like her, doesn’t he?” Steve turned to Natasha. “Took you long enough,” Nat replied turning her attention back to the movie. He got off the couch and trailed after Bucky.
“Bucky?” Steve poked his head through Bucky’s door and found him lying down on his bed, staring at the ceiling. Bucky sat up and Steve sat down a chair opposite to him.
“Y/n’s a good person…,” Steve began but he was cut short by Bucky, “Steve, please, it’s not like that.”
“Really, then why did you get so heated up back there?” Bucky didn’t answer just looked down at his hands again.
“It’s okay Buck. After all these years, you deserve to be happy. If you like y/n that’s completely fine,” Steve tried again. There was a long silence before Bucky spoke, “Does she hate me?” he asked, sadness creeping into his voice despite his best efforts. “What! No, why would you think that?” Steve was caught off guard by the question.
“Ever since I came to the tower I noticed that she doesn’t stay here. She walks out of a room when I walk in. She barely talks to me. And today, she gave me this,” he said handing Steve his iPod, “and so I thought that maybe she didn’t hate me. But this morning she ran away the moment I started talking and …” he trailed off slowly, returning to silence.
“She gave you an iPod! Why?” asked Steve surprised.
“She said it was because I saved her life in our last mission,” Bucky said, confused.
“I’ve saved her a couple times before and she never gave me an iPod,” Steve was looking at the iPod with such sadness.
“Steve!” Bucky’s voice was low and annoyed
“Right, right. Sorry. Listen, y/n doesn’t hate you. She’s just…” Steve rubbed the back of his neck nervously. Bucky looked at him with expectant eyes. “It’s really not my place to tell but since you think she hates you,” Steve continues, “She was deployed on a mission in Chicago with me, Tony and Rhodey a few months after she joined the Avengers. It was supposed to be a standard op – terrorist bombers in a government building.
“We were supposed to get the people to safety while y/n controlled the explosion and stopped the fire from spreading. But the explosion was too powerful and I don’t know, I think they used some kind of special accelerant or something but y/n couldn’t put out the fire. So she tried to redirect it, box it into this one segment of the building that we were told was already evacuated but…” he hesitated to continue. “But - ?” Bucky prodded him.
“But it wasn’t. A woman and her son were stuck in the building.”
Steve continued, “By the time we realized, it was already too late. Y/n tried so hard to put out the fire, nearly got herself killed in the process. But she couldn’t do anything.”
He took a long pause before continuing, “She blames herself for their deaths and she’s been carrying it ever since. When she came back she was a different person. She completely stopped using her powers. Up until then she had been trying so hard to master it but after Chicago she just let it all go. She never used her powers again. She tries to make up for what happened by taking on as many missions as she can,” Steve explained, “She tries to keep herself busy – hence the leaving early for missions, taking her anger out at the gym etc.  The nightmares she used to have were as bad as yours until she went to therapy. Killing herself everyday over the people she could not save. She pretty much shut herself off after that.”

Sleep on the floor
Bucky x reader x Loki
Mistakes were not as easily forgotten as they were forgiven.
A mistake, no matter how minor or how long ago it had been made, could and would follow you for the rest of your life.
You had made plenty of mistakes in your short life that, at the time, you thought were perfectly justified.
You had been born in a time were being born the way you were made you an abomination in the world's eyes.
You were born a mutant.
Granted, you had been lucky enough that your mutation was not physical. That would have most likely resulted in your family leaving you for the wolves.
You were born with ferrokinesis. The ability to control and manipulate metal.
Growing up, you had witnessed the prejudice and degradation other mutants endured, and it filled you with rage.
You were just people.
People who had been born with a little something extra, and that was all.
At fifteen, you had been a part of many pro-mutant rallies and riots.
They always started peacefully, but it always ended in violence. Violence that you had joined in on and inflicted on anyone who tried to hurt the people you were 'defending'.
You were young and angry and didn't know a better way to get the message out.
It wasn't until one riot when a pyrokinetic mutant killed seventy people, human and mutant alike, that you realised this wasn't the way.
You had been running from your past when Nick Fury approached you to join his Avengers. And, wanting to make something of yourself, you agreed to join.
You were older now and thought you'd put your past behind you. But the Avengers had been given an in-depth review of your life, and they didn't like it.
Well, most of them.
Loki and Bucky Barnes knew better than anyone what it meant to make a mistake or do something you regretted better than anyone.
That's why the three of you bonded so quickly.
It was why the three of you would hide on one another's floors, away from the rest of the team and the world, would make plans together, destress after missions together and eventually, why the three of you went on your first date.
And four years later, the three of you were still there for each other.
There was nothing any of you could have done or would do that would make the three of you turn on each other.
Too bad that wasn't the same for the rest of the world.
"Stop watching the news." You said, taking the remote from Bucky's hand. "We both know it's nothing good." You added, switching the screen off.
"Not in the slightest." Bucky sighed. "They think I purposefully shot that kid."
"You didn't. You shot the alien that was going to kill seven more people, and the bullet accidentally got someone with it. It happens." You reminded the man.
"That's not all they think, darling," Loki said as he entered the bedroom with your tablet in his hands. "They think I'm responsible for this attack too and that you attempted to kill Stark."
"Fucking hell. These assholes were watching, purposefully getting in the way and putting themselves in danger, and they still can't get the story straight." You sighed.
Aliens had invaded New York again. But this time, no one was sure how they had or why.
Like the first time aliens had invaded New York, many people had been injured or killed during the battle. Unfortunately, this time, many of the casualties were a direct result of actions that the team had made.
When the fight was over, the smoke clearing and Tony's team of relief workers were well underway, the team had returned to the compound in shame.
And that's when the news reports had started.
Despite other members of the team causing their fair share of damage and even casualties, the media had blamed you, Bucky and Loki.
"I don't think they care too much for the truth, darling," Loki told you.
"Miss L/N, Sargent Barnes, Mr Loki, the team is requesting your presence in the communal living room," FRIDAY spoke.
"Tell them we're busy, FRI," Bucky said as you flopped back on the bed.
"They do insist that this is urgent."
"Let's just get this over with." You said, rising to a stand. "We're on our way, FRI."
"Why do I feel like we're about to be scolded?" Bucky asked as the three of you stood in the elevator.
"Because we are."
"We did nothing wrong. Remember that." Loki reminded the two of you. "There's nothing they can scold us for."
"They'll find something." You sighed.
"Have you seen the news?" Tony asked as soon as the three of you stepped into the living room.
"What? No 'hello'?" Loki quipped.
"This isn't a joke, reindeer games." Tony snapped.
"Tony, calm down." Steve sighed.
"No, Rogers, I will not calm down." Tony retorts. "This is what Pepper calls a P.R disaster. This is what I call a P.R disaster."
"How many times you ever said that in your life?" Natasha snorted.
"The relief team is bombarded right now," Tony said. "They've called in all the backup they can, and it's still not enough. And they can't even control what half the press is saying."
"Isn't that your job, Tony?" You rose a brow.
"Zip it, metal bender!" Tony snapped. "It's mostly you and your boy toys causing this disaster."
"Watch it, Stark," Bucky warned, narrowing his eyes at the man.
"Look, I have Pepper breathing down my neck, the P.R team wants to hang one of us, and the media is going to eviscerate someone," Tony said. "And that's why the three of you are going to clear this up with the news." He said, pointing a finger at you, Loki and Bucky.
"Excuse me, but why just us?" Loki asked, crossing his arms.
"Because you three are the media's problems right now," Tony said, grabbing his phone and quickly typing something away. "Look at these articles, 'Loki back at it again.' 'The Winter Soldier back? Barnes shoots civilian.' 'Y/N L/N tries to kill teammate.'"
"Loki didn't do this."
"Bucky didn't mean to shoot that civilian."
"Y/N was saving your ass, Stark, and you know it."
"You three need to calm down." Steve rose to a stand, holding his hands out placatingly.
"You're not going to say anything, Steve?" Bucky asked his friend, only for Steve to remain quiet.
"You were there, Steve! All of you were!" You exclaimed. "You know better than anyone that what they're saying isn't right."
"It doesn't matter what we think," Steve told you. "The media's already made up their minds."
"Unfuckingbelievable." You scoffed, turning on your heel and storming out, with Loki and Bucky behind you.
"Well, Banner's informed Thor of what happened," Loki said, hanging up his phone.
"Please, tell me they're not ending their honeymoon early." You asked the man.
"No, I managed to convince Thor that we had everything handled," Loki told you.
"Yeah, right." Bucky scoffed, not looking up from the floor. "Nothing's under control in this place."
"Buck, baby."
"Steve, didn't, believe me." Bucky said. "He's my best pal, and he wasn't on my side."
"No one in that room was on our side." Loki tried to sound reassuring as he sat beside the man.
"Not exactly helpful, babe." You sighed.
"But not untrue."
"No." You shook your head. "No one on this team wanted us to join, did they?"
"I don't think so," Loki said.
"Why do we stay?" You questioned the men.
"What do you mean? Like in the compound?" Bucky wondered.
"No. Why do we stay on this team?" You clarified. "They don't want us here. The media and the public don't want our help. Why do we stay?"
"Because we owe so much to the world?" Bucky suggested.
"We don't owe anyone anything." You said, rising to a stand. "We have paid for our mistakes, just as much as anyone else on this team, and yet, we're still the bad guys. We don't deserve this."
"Y/N,"
"No, babe, we are not bad people. But they still treat us like we are, and this isn't the first time! We shouldn't have to put up with this."
"Y/N, I was going to say I agree," Loki said, standing and gently holding your arms.
"Yeah?"
"Yes." He nodded. "No matter how many times we have tried to make amends, this team sneers at us. As does the world. We are always going to be villains in their eyes. They will never think us the better."
"Guys, we can't just leave," Bucky said, causing you and Loki to look back at him. "We owe this team,"
"Bucky, we don't owe them anything. You don't owe anyone on this team anything, not even Steve." You promised the brunette.
"But, I've hurt people."
"Under the command of someone else. Those weren't your decisions." Loki reassured him. "And any mistake you believe you've made, you have long since made up for."
"Aren't you tired, Buck? Tired of always being wrong here?" You asked. "Aren't done with being the scapegoat when anything goes wrong? Because I am."
"As am I."
"Buck, this relationship is about always being on the same page. So, if you don't want to leave, we can stay." You offered, despite the pit the words caused in your stomach.
"Steve wasn't on my side tonight," Bucky said, playing with his fingers. "No one defended you, Loke, even though they knew it wasn't your fault. And you saved Tony, Y/N, but he didn't disagree when they said you tried to kill him."
"Right,"
"I don't think we should stay anymore," Bucky concluded.
"You want to leave?"
"I want to be happy, and I want you two to be too. And I don't think we can be if we stay." Bucky nodded. "So, I think we should go."
"The only question now is, when?" You asked, looking between the two.
"Tonight," Loki announced. "We should leave tonight."
"So soon?" Bucky cocked his head.
"If we don't leave now, we might never make it out," Loki explained.
"Buck?" You asked, turning to the man.
"I'm ready if you are," Bucky told you.
"Trust me, I've been ready to leave for a long time." You told Bucky.
"That settles it then." Loki nodded. "Pack yourself your toothbrushes, dears. Pack yourself your favourite blouse. Pack whatever you need. We're out of here by sunrise."
"Do you have everything?" Bucky asked you and Loki as the three of you gathered your backpacks.
"We have everything we need from here," Loki said as you grabbed your car keys.
"The car's still hidden around the corner." You told the two. "We'll drive to the first bank out of New York and make a withdrawal. Anything missing from that plan?"
"That's all the plan we have, darling." Loki reminded you.
"Right."
"We should get going," Bucky said, placing two letters on the coffee table.
"One for Steve?" You guessed.
"One for Steve." Bucky nodded. "Pass me the keys. I'll drive tonight."
"Welcome to Pittsburgh!" You exclaimed, leaning your head out of the window.
"How much coffee have you had?" Loki chuckled as Bucky gently pulled you back into the car.
"Put your seatbelt on." Bucky shook his head.
"Nowhere near enough coffee, Loke." You told the God. "We should actually find somewhere with coffee to stop by soon."
"Sorry, doll, but any more, and your heart will burst," Bucky told you.
"Party pooper." You stuck your tongue out.
"Pull over," Loki said, looking up from his phone.
"What?"
"Pull over, James," Loki said, tapping the brunette's shoulder. "Trust me, you'll want to see this," Loki told as Bucky pulled onto the side of the road.
"Where are you going?" You asked as Loki got out of the car.
"Follow me!"
"C'est la vie." You shrugged, following after Loki with Bucky right behind you. "Woah there!" You laughed as Loki grabbed your hand twirled you around.
"Showing off all those years of ballroom training?" Bucky asked as Loki pulled him into his arms.
"Perhaps," Loki smirked before dipping Bucky. "I wanted the three of us to watch this." He said before turning to face the east.
You and Bucky turned to face the same direction Loki was facing and saw what Loki wanted you to see.
The sun was rising.
The sky was dancing between shades of blue and pink as the golden sun rose above the clouds.
"Wow." You gasped, staring at the sky in awe. "It's gorgeous."
"Third most gorgeous thing I've seen all day," Bucky commented, wrapping an arm around you and Loki.
"Glad you stopped now, aren't you?" Loki smirked.
"Yeah."
"Absolutely."
Eventually, the three of you moved to sit on the car's hood, watching the sunrise as other vehicles sped past.
"You know, when I was a kid, Father Brannon always used to say that we were made of sin. That we were born in sin." Bucky said, breaking the silence you were all sitting in.
"You believe that?" You asked, cocking your head.
"I used to. But I don't think sin is born. Neither is evil. I think it's made. I think we made sin, and we made evil." Bucky explained, not taking his eyes off the sky. "But we're not evil. It doesn't matter what Father Brannon, the team, or the world says because we're not."
"Well said, James." Loki smiled, leaning up to kiss Bucky's cheek.
"How long do you think it'll take them to find the notes?" You asked, leaning back onto the windscreen.
"I say it'll take days." Loki hummed.
"They wanted us to do all those interviews, I say by the end of the night," Bucky commented.
"Do you think we have enough space between them and us?" You wondered.
"We're, what, six hours away?" Loki guessed. "I'd say a little more distance wouldn't hurt."
"Then we better get driving." You said, hopping off the car. "I'll take the next shift, Buck."
"You sure, doll? Because I'm more than happy to drive." Bucky told you.
"I've got it. Besides, the driver picks the music." You smirked as Bucky and Loki groaned.
"I'm dead. My whole being is dead." You groaned as Bucky opened the motel room.
"Don't joke about that." Loki flicked your forehead.
"Ow. Mean." You grumbled. "Buck, what are you doing?" You asked Bucky, who started stripping the beds.
"Checking for anything gross. Bed bugs, blood, semen, anything." Bucky told you, pulling back the sheets. "Aha! Blood right there." Bucky said, nodding to a large dried spot of blood.
"Gross."
"Should we find another motel?"
"The blankets look alright." You mused, taking one out of Bucky's hands. "These'll be fine for tonight."
"Today."
"Whatever." You said, fluffing the blanket onto the floor. "Check the pillows for me, Buck?"
"Already on it," Bucky said as he inspected the pillows.
"What exactly are you planning, love?" Loki asked as he watched you spread blankets on the ground.
"You can't drive, and Buck and I are too tired to keep driving. We might as well just sleep on the floor." You said, smoothing out the makeshift bed.
"Let me help," Loki said, kneeling beside you and pulling the blankets out flat.
"You're alright with this? I know you're used to a little nicer." You asked Loki.
"Darling, right now, nothing bothers me," Loki promised you with a smile.
"Pillows are clean," Bucky announced, tossing three pillows onto the bed.
"Great." You sighed before flopping face-first onto the pillow.
"Aren't you going to change?" Bucky chuckled.
"Sh. Too tired." You mumbled.
"At least take your shoes off, doll," Bucky said, causing you to kick your shoes off.
"Happy?"
"I suppose," Bucky said before wrapping himself around you.
"Darling, I'm stealing your hair tie," Loki told you, sliding the tie off your wrist.
"Theif." You said, rolling over to face the God.
"You love it." Loki blew you a kiss before laying down.
"Any idea where we're going tomorrow?" Bucky questioned the two of you.
"Do we have to get out of Pittsburgh right away?" You wondered.
"I suppose we don't have to get out of here right away. Why?"
"I was thinking maybe we could take in the sights." You told the two. "How often did we get to go somewhere and actually just be tourists?"
"The answer to that would be never."
"Exactly. Maybe tomorrow, we could go to the zoo. Or the museum." You suggested. "Just be normal people for once."
"I quite like the sound of that." Loki smiled.
"I haven't been to the zoo since I was a kid," Bucky recalled. "Why not? Let's do it." He said before yawning.
"Fantastic. Now that we've sorted tomorrow's activities, perhaps sleep would be the best course of action." Loki suggested.
"Way ahead of you." You mumbled, already half-asleep. "Love you two."
"Love you too, doll."
"Love you, darling."
"I hope you know that I'm going to steal that from you." You said, nodding to Loki's new hoodie.
"I don't expect anything different." Loki chuckled.
"And done," Bucky said, gently tapping the giraffe keychain hanging from the rearview mirror.
"Can I ask why we purchased so many mugs?" Loki asked, nodding to the tote bag that was gently clinking.
"When we finally decide on our new home, we're going to need mugs. And this way, they all have a story." You said.
"What are we looking for exactly?" Loki asked you. "In a home, I mean.
"Something with a lot of land. I've always wanted to be a farmer." Bucky mentioned.
"Not too close to the main town. A little privacy for once would be nice." You added. "So, we're thinking house?"
"Definitely."
"And one with a few rooms," Loki said. "We'll need the room."
"You thinking about kids, Mr Laufeyson?" Bucky teased.
"I was thinking about the number of things we hoard, but having space for our family to grow wouldn't be so bad. Would it?" Loki asked.
"No, I don't think it would be at all." You smiled.
"James?" Loki asked when Bucky remained quiet. "Any thoughts or opinions you wish to add here?"
"I want a family with the two of you, don't get me wrong, but I think there's something I have to do first," Bucky mentioned.
"And what's that?"
"I think I want to remove this." Bucky nodded to his metal arm.
"Why? I thought you were okay with it again." You said, cocking your head.
"It's fine to fight. But I don't want to fight anymore. I just, I want to be a farmer. To be your partner, and maybe, one day, be a father." Bucky said.
"I think that's something we can make happen," Loki promised the brunette.
"Yeah?"
"Of course. We'll find our place, maybe not today, but we'll find it. We'll have plenty of land for you to farm to your heart's content, and when the time's right, we'll have our family." Loki smiled, resting his hand on Bucky's shoulder.
"I could do it." You blurted out. "I could remove your arm if that's what you really wanted." You added.
"You'd do that?" Bucky asked hopefully.
"I'd do whatever I could to make you happy. Both of my boys." You shrugged.
"Not yet," Bucky told you. "I don't want to yet. When we find our place, yes, but not right now."
"The only question now is where is our place?" Loki asked the two of you.
"North Dakota." You announced, putting your phone down.
"What about it?"
"That's where we go." You told Bucky. "More specifically, New Rockford."
"Alright, explain why." Loki nodded for you to continue.
"Population's only about thirteen hundred people. It's cold for about four months of the year and never too hot according to Google, and I've found plenty of houses within our budget perfect for farming." You explained.
"It sounds pretty good." Bucky nodded.
"How far are we?" Loki asked you.
"About fifteen hours away." You told him.
"Then we've got a long drive ahead of us before we're home."
"This place is,"
"Fantastic?"
"Fantastic." You smiled, holding Loki's arm a little tighter.
"You think it's the one?" Bucky asked from beside Loki.
"I think it is, but what about you two?" You asked, coming to a stop. "What do you two think?"
"I like it," Bucky told you. "It's got plenty of space, and the realtor says the grounds perfect for crops."
"Loke?" You turned to the God. "What do you think?"
"I think we might have found home," Loki told you with a smile.
"Yeah?"
"Yes."
"What are you doing?" You asked, standing in the doorway of your new bedroom.
"Setting up our bed," Loki informed you, carefully smoothing down the blankets.
"On the floor?"
"Well, we have no mattress or bed frame yet. So this is the best solution." Loki told you.
"Let me help." You said, taking some nearby pillows off the ground. "You're alright with sleeping on the floor?"
"Darling, I couldn't be happier to." Loki smiled.
"Good, just checking."
"Are you ready?" You questioned Bucky.
"Ready as I'll ever be." He smiled up at you.
"I'll be holding your hand the whole time, James," Loki promised, squeezing Bucky's human hand.
"I know."
"It won't be long. And if it feels wrong at any point, you tell me, okay?" You told Bucky.
"I will," Bucky promised. "Hey, I trust you, doll," Bucky said, pressing a kiss to your knuckles.
"Alright, let's do this." You said, stretching out your mind and feeling Bucky's arm respond to you.
"Something smells good." You hummed, entering the kitchen. "What's my darling husband cooking tonight?" You asked, standing behind Loki and wrapping your arms around his waist.
"Well, James' goat's cheese is finally ready to be eaten, and I have sausage and bacon cooking as well," Loki explained.
"You didn't kill Hank's piglets for this, did you?" You questioned him.
"Darling, we've been over this the piglets are meant to be eaten." Loki reminded you.
"When they're older. Right now, those piglets are only babies." You protested.
"Rest assured, the piglets are safe until one of them can make more than two sausages," Loki promised you.
"You better not be mocking my animals again, Loki," Bucky said as he entered the kitchen.
"It's not my fault you raised scrawny animals." Loki teased.
"Well, let's hope that you don't do the same with our children." You said, causing both men to freeze.
"What?"
"I mean, it doesn't matter whether they're scrawny or not. As long as this baby's healthy, I'll be happy." You told the two.
"You're pregnant," Loki stated. "With our child." He added with a grin.
"Three months today." You nodded. "I wanted to be sure before I said anything."
"This is fantastic!" Bucky chuckled, pulling you into a one-armed embrace. "We're going to have our family! Oh, you know what this means, we need another goat! A goat for the baby!"
"The baby is a baby, James. They don't need a goat." Loki shook his head with a fond smile. "This is fantastic news, love," Loki promised before pulling you into an embrace. "A boy or a girl?" He asked, pressing his hand against your still flat stomach.
"Too soon to tell."
"It doesn't matter. They're already perfect," Loki promised before kissing you. "You're perfect. Thank you for this."
"We did this together." You told him. "The three of us."
It had been six years since the three of you had run from the Avengers. Six years since the three of you had found your home and started your family, and none of you could be happier.
"Ingrid! Logan! Hurry, or your sister will feed all the chickens!" You called as your youngest pulled you along.
"Come on, mama! The chicks will starve!" Elizabeth exaggerated.
"I'm coming, I'm coming." You chuckled, following her down the steps.
"You gotta be careful with mama, Lizzy. She's carrying precious cargo." Bucky said, appearing with your eldest children.
"Sorry, mama." The three-year-old apologized.
"It's alright, sweetheart." You smiled, brushing a curl from her face. "Why don't you go with the twins for a second? You guys know what you're doing?"
"We know how to feed the chickens, mama," Ingrid said as Logan took Lizzy's hand.
"Good. Go." You said, kissing each of the kid's heads. "We're right behind you." You ushered them off.
"I bet I feed more chickens than you two!"
"What? No fair, Logan!"
"They get that from you, you know," Bucky told you.
"What can I say? I'm as stubborn as steel." You smirked as the two of you followed behind the kids.
"Yeah, and this one'll be too," Bucky said, nodding to your stomach.
"This is the last one, I hope you know. My back is killing me."
"Then why aren't you sitting down?"
"And leave you to deal with three kids on your own? No chance." You snorted.
"Loki will be home soon, doll. We can manage." Bucky told you.
"I know. But I like running around after those three. Trust me, I'll sit when I need to." You promised just as your old pickup truck made its presence known.
"You know, you fix that noise," Bucky told you as Loki drove closer.
"I could, but it adds charm." You said as the two of you waited for Loki to pull up.
"Who's that behind him?" Bucky asked, pointing out a car following behind yours.
"Maybe one of your customers." You suggested. "Ida from down the road is always wanting more goat's cheese."
"That's not Ida's car. It's too new, too fancy," Bucky said as Loki came to a stop just a distance away.
"Fancy enough for,"
"The Avengers." Bucky finished as Loki got out of the car.
"It's only four of them," Loki called as the occupants behind him got out.
"Y/N! Bucky!" Thor cheered, waving brightly at the two of you.
"Thor and Bruce are more than welcome to stay." You said, waving at the two. "But if the two of you make one wrong move, you'll be impaled where you stand." You warned the other two.
"Charming. I forgot how charming you were." Tony Stark rolled his eyes as he approached.
"Be nice, Tony." Steve Rogers chided.
"Papa!"
"Daddy!"
"Papa!"
"Hello, little ones." Loki chuckled as the three ran into his legs.
"Holy shit," Tony swore, staring at the sight.
"Are these my nieces and nephew you've spoken of so much, brother?" Thor asked, moving to stand at Loki's side.
"They are. Ingrid, Logan, Lizzy, meet your uncle Thor." Loki introduced.
"Kids, why don't you show Uncle Thor and Bruce the chickens?" You suggested not taking your eyes off the other two Avengers.
"You three procreated?" Tony asked once the children had runoff. "Holy shit."
"A problem, Stark?" Bucky rose a brow.
"No. Not at all, just didn't see it coming." Tony rose his hands.
"Where's your arm, Buck?" Steve questioned his old friend.
"I didn't need it anymore." Bucky shrugged.
"Not that this isn't pleasant,"
"Which it's not."
"Why are you here?" You demanded of the two.
"We assume you know about what Thanos did?" Steve asked.
"It was all over the news. It still is." Bucky nodded. "Plenty of people in town lost loved ones."
"And it looks like none of you did," Tony commented.
"We were lucky."
"And now we want your help," Steve said. "We think there's a way to reverse what happened. And we need all hands on deck."
"Oh, is that all?" You scoffed. "No deal."
"Now, hang on a second,"
"No, you don't get to make demands of us anymore."
"Y/N, I don't think you understand. This is bigger than any of us. You need to help." Steve told you.
"No, Steve, we don't," Bucky spoke up. "We don't have to do anything, anymore. We're done fighting, and we've been done for six years."
"Bucky,"
"No, Steve." Bucky cut him off. "Do I want to know how long it took you to work out we were gone? Did you ever look before now?" Bucky questioned him. "That's what I thought." He said at Steve's silence.
"Look, you're pissed at us. We get it. But that doesn't mean you can't help us." Tony said, taking a step closer. "You're Avengers. This kind of shit is in the job description."
"We quit six years ago, Stark," Loki told the man. "We're not Avengers. We're not fighters. We have a home now."
"A real one." You added.
"We have three kids with one on the way," Bucky told the two. "We left the Avengers, and we're not coming back. Not now, not ever."
"Please, Bucky," Steve begged.
"No, Steve. Thank you for everything you've done for me, truly, but I can't do this anymore." Bucky shook his head. "It's the end of the line, pal."
The two men stared at one another for a moment before Steve finally let out a sigh.
"See you around, Buck." Steve smiled sadly. "Let's go, Tony." He said before walking away.
"We're not even going to wait for the other two? And you're walking away." Tony sighed before following after Steve.
"They could come back." You murmured, watching as the car drove away.
"That's okay because they're going to get the same answer every time," Loki said, wrapping his arm around your waist.
"You know what this means?" Bucky questioned the two of you.
"No."
"What?"
"We made it out. And we made it out alive." Bucky said with a smile.
"We did, huh?" Loki smiled.
"Of course we did. We had each other." You told the two. "Now, come on. Let's save your brother from our children."
"That may be an act harder than saver the world." Loki joked.
"Lucky we're not saving the world than. It's just our family." Bucky said, causing you and Loki to smile.

Summary: Giving up everything to be with the man you love you realize he never was yours…
Pairing: Steve Rogers x Reader, Steve Rogers x Sharon Carter (barely), Sam Wilson, Bucky Barnes, Wanda Maximoff, Vision
Warnings: angst, unrequited feelings, pissed reader, fighting, Nomad!Steve, smut, unprotected sex, fingering, dirty talk, sex against a wall, sassy reader, violence, language, reader has pyrokinetic/telekinetic/telepathic powers
Heart-wrenching pain hits you. Struggling to breathe you watch Steve kissing Sharon, cupping her face, almost as if she’s the only thing he has in mind right now. Sam firing his friend on doesn’t help either.
While Bucky sits next to you, searching your face Sam is looking at the scene, almost squealing in his seat. You didn’t follow Steve as you thought it’s the wrong thing to do to sign the accords. You didn’t save his friend as you believe he will never relapse; you did follow Steve as you are in love with him for what feels like ages.
You ruined your life, ruined your friendship with Tony and the other Avengers for a man not wanting you, not even seeing you.
Bucky’s clears his throat, punching Sam’s shoulder to make him stop cheer for his friend. The winter soldier, the killer next to you feels more compassion than the man you love with all your heart.
“I’m sorry, doll. Does he know?” Bucky whispers so Sam can’t hear his words.
Reluctantly you shake your head, hiding the hurting as Steve gets into the car, glancing at you for a second. There’s something in your eyes he never saw before, but he doesn’t have time to ask what’s wrong.
“We’ve got all we need. Let’s get out of here.” Steve exclaims but this time you don’t answer or help him making plans. This time you just look out of the window, nodding.
“Any ideas you want to share, Y/N?” Sam asks as you don’t react to whatever Steve just told Sam and Bucky. You are always the one finding a way to save the day but right now you are too lost in the pain you feel to be helpful.
“No. I think Captain America and Sharon got this for sure. Maybe I should leave, I’m just dead weight you do not need. I could distract Tony and the others. He will not give up for sure.” Your voice is broken, and you hate the sound of your defeat.
“When you stay behind they will arrest you for insubordination, Y/N. We can’t leave you behind.” Sam tries to understand what happened. Not half an hour ago you had the perfect plan to save Bucky and distract Tony and now your mood changed completely.
Sam’s eyes dart from you to Bucky and he gulps hard when the realization hits him. He cheered for Sharon and Steve while your heart broke. Your friend’s eyes soften as he gives you a cracked smile. “I’m sorry, Y/N. Didn’t know…”
“It’s fine, Sam. No one knew, no one except for Tony, he’ll understand. I need to talk to him and distract him. You can make it without me and meet up with Sharon later. I bet you have a lot of things to…discuss…” Steve tries to say something but Sam shakes his head, silently telling Steve to not push you.
“You can’t just leave. Tony would get suspicious and use you to get hold of me and Bucky or even Sharon.” Steve doesn’t know he stabbed your heart by saying her name.
“Sharon…sure. She’s that important. No one else counts but your lovely Sharon. Stop the goddamn car, Steve! I won’t sit here after I ruined my life for you only to hear you talking lovingly about a woman you barely know. Fuck you, Rogers. Tony was right. I shouldn’t have let my heart decide. I was…” The moment Steve stops the car you jump out, giving Sam and Bucky a curt nod, you start running away…
Steve’s jaw ticks and his hands twitch at the sight of you running away from him. He’s got no clue what just happened, but he knows one thing. This wasn’t how he imagined the day would end…
—-
Weeks later…
“Nice place to be…huh?” Glancing at Sam in his cell you chuckle lightly. “I was wrong, you know. Tony couldn’t stop them from arresting me. I wasn’t even involved in all the other crap…”
“I’m sorry, Y/N. But you helped us escape and distracted them for a while.” Sam is giving you a cracked smile as you huff at his words.
“Still you ended up here, just like Clint and the others. Sucks. We all sacrificed our freedom for Captain Asshole.” Muttering you toss the disgusting breakfast they offered against the wall. “Should’ve known better.”
“Did you ever tell Steve about your feelings?” Sam tries to calm you, but he fails epically as you start smashing everything in your cell against the wall.
“Stop talking about him! How should I have told him, Sam? He was busy playing hero all over the world, and the only woman he was talking about was Peggy. I thought he never got over her and hid my feelings only to see he moved on well – with Sharon. Sucks to realize only I was not good enough…” Sniffling you sit onto the floor not recognizing someone getting closer to your cell.
Worried blue eyes look down at you lie on the floor, trying to tame your aching heart.
“Any ideas on how to get out of here Sam? They put this nice collar around my neck to make sure I can’t use my powers. Tony tried to get at least Wanda and me out but Ross is a stubborn asshole. Should’ve ripped him apart before I surrendered…” Closing your eyes you hear your door open and prepare for a fight but then someone yanks you upward.
“We need to get out of here.” Steve pants before he breaks the collar around your neck. “Find a way out while I get Sam and Wanda out.”
“Yes, Captain Asshole, took you long enough. What about Clint and Scott?” Running out of the room you use your powers to locate all enemies in the Raft Prison. “Three on their way to the left Captain. Open the cells, I’ll take care of these guys.”
Your eyes turn red when flames surround your body and you throw a wave of pyrokinesis at your enemies. “That was a warning, next time.” Smirking you let the flames turn bright red and the prison guards scramble to their feet to run away.
“Barbecue, get started!” Sam calls for you as he carries Wanda toward the exit. Running after Sam you glance at Steve and Bucky. While Bucky breaks through a wall nearby Steve wants to help you but you slap his hand away.
“What about Clint and Scott?” Panting you look over your shoulder at Sam.
“Made a deal. They are under domiciliary arrest.“ Steve answers your question as Bucky holds out his hand to help you through the hole.
Taking his offered hand, you follow Bucky, not caring about the angry look Steve gives you. “Let me check the area…” Wanda tries but due to the drugs, they gave her she can’t concentrate.
“No, you’re too weak, Wand’, let me do this.” Cupping her cheek, you give your friend a cracked smile. Touching the wall, you use all your strength to ‘scan’ the building for enemies. “Four enemies to the left, heavily armored…whoa…even a grenade launcher. To the right two more, we can take these down. Sam, stay behind with Wanda. Bucky you too. Let me do this, I’m pissed…”
Flames surround your body once again and you burst the door open, not waiting for the guards to give up you use your powers to slam them into the wall, melting their weapons while you keep them in place.
“Y/N, let’s go.” Steve tries but you tighten the grip on the men, now stalking toward them.
“No, these two, you don’t know what they tried.” Pointing at the guards you scoff. “They thought I’m helpless without my powers. Didn’t think I’m trained by the best assassin I know.” Your fist collides with one of the guard’s nose, breaking it on its way.
“What did he try?” Now Steve’s posture changes and you huff. “Nothing you would want to hear, Captain.” Dropping the men, you use your telekinesis to break their legs.
Kneeling next to one of the groaning guards you smirk. “Next time you try to touch an inmate you will think of me and turn on your heels or I swear I’ll find you and end what I started.”
“You’re an Avenger…” Panting the guard tries to reason with you but you simply pinch his cheek. “Was an Avenger…” Shrugging you look at Sam holding Wanda in his arms. “Now we are criminals, hunted. A dead guard of a secret prison won’t make me more wanted, asshole.”
“Y/N…let’s go.” Steve grabs your arm to drag you out of the room, not letting go of you till you reach the helicopter he stole. “Natasha is waving at Steve as he starts running, dragging you with him.
—-
“How is Wanda?” Glancing at Vision checking on your friend you bite your lip. Your hand grasp Wanda’s to squeeze it tightly. “They drugged her every fucking day. I tried to get out of my cell, and they used the collar.”
“Collar… How did they get it around your neck?” Steve watches you tense when he gets closer.
“They had a needle in Wanda’s neck with something that would’ve killed her. I had to choose freedom or my friend. I chose Wanda…” Sniffling you refuse to look at Steve.
“You did well, Barbecue.” Sam pats your shoulder, knowing about the struggle you went through. He saw the anger and feared you would burst the whole prison. “I know you were close to exploding.”
“I couldn’t kill you, Wanda or Clint and this Scott guy. I know he has a daughter.” Wanda starts stirring and you smile when she looks up at you, giving you a thumb up.
“She should rest now.” Vision hates seeing Wanda like this. Weak, defeated…
“Why is Vision here? I thought he’s the enemy now…” Steve doesn’t answer your question as he walks out of the room. Busy checking his phone he ignores your question or the sigh leaving your lips.
“Fine. Don’t answer my question. It’s as if I ever got more than orders from you…”
—-
Months later…
“I told you to stay behind and provide back-up!” Steve is furiously clenching his fists. Glaring at you he tries to intimidate you with his size but you won’t budge. Pushing against his chest you scoff.
“I’m not a little girl, Captain. You are still alive as I saved your ungrateful ass!” Turning to walk toward your room you curse when Steve grabs your arm to drag you into his room.
“I gave you an order to keep you safe!”
Your hand collides with Steve’s cheek. “I don’t need the great Captain America to save me. You can save your Sharon and leave the fighting to me. I bet she will faint only for you.” Angrily pushing against his chest you glare at Steve who doesn’t know why you bring up Sharon once again.
“I haven’t seen her since we had to run. Why are you always talking about her?” Steve searches your face but you won’t give away he hurt your feelings.
“Leave me be. I got better things to do than explaining why I decided to save your ass. If you excuse me now. My bed is waiting…” Licking your lips you let your mind wander to your vibrator and a glass of wine.
“I know why you want to go to your room.” Steve is walking you toward the wall, caging you with his body he smirks when you start panting.
He’s pressing his palms against the wall at each side of your head. Tilting his head to slide his nose along your jugular. “I know you want to play with yourself…again. Shall I help you out?”
“Nooo…” Clearing your throat you press weakly against his firm chest, trying so hard to ignore his closeness.
“I can hear your heart beating faster and Baby…” Now he plants a soft kiss to your pulse point, scratching your skin with his beard. “I can smell your arousal close to me. Tell me why you bring up Sharon…”
“I gave up everything for you, to follow you and then you get out of the car and kiss this woman. You don’t even know her for long. I kept my feelings hidden as I thought you are still yearning for Peggy only to see you getting all touchy with this chick.” Hands balled into fists you slam them into Steve’s chest.
“You don’t need to be jealous, Baby. I only want to bend you over my bed and take you hard. You are the only one I imagine when I feel lonely and touch my cock. You’re the one I imagine writhing on my cock almost every night.” His hands grab your wrists to pin them down above your head. Keeping you in place with one large hand.
Panting heavily, you feel his hand wander. Groping your breasts before he moves over your stomach down to his goal.
There’s a dirty smirk on his lips and you can’t believe the golden boy is telling you all the dirty things he wants to do to you.
“I still hate you…” Pouting you meet his stormy blue eyes and his lips silence your protest when he dips two fingers into your panties to flick your clit.
“I know, Baby. I’m sorry for taking so long to get you out of the prison. I had to wait for the perfect moment. Drove myself crazy imagining someone else could touch you.” Lips nipping along your jawline he slips two thick fingers into your cunt, searching for the spot making you squirm.
“They tried but failed. I broke one of these guys jaw and the other guy will never have children for sure.” Gasping you feel Steve brushing over your g-spot.
He’s growling at the sight of your parted lips and the way your walls squeeze his fingers tightly. “Missed these sinful lips, the way you smell or your feisty personality. Daddy will make you cum so hard, Baby.”
Your eyes glance at his lips as he crooks his fingers, pressing hard down your clit with his thumb. Two swipes of his thumb later you are a whimpering mess, just giving in to the pleasure he brings you.
“Steve, let go of me…” Crying out at the feeling of his fingers working your heated flesh your struggle against his hold. Steve can see your eyes flashing red and knows you are close to your breaking point.
Releasing your hand, he groans when you grab his shoulders to bring him down for a messy kiss. All teeth and tongue you invade his mouth, devouring the golden boy. “Want to fuck you so badly, Y/N.” Steve’s fingers leave your pussy to rip your panties apart.
While you slide your tongue with his, gently swiping over the skilled muscle Steve moves his hands to your ass to pick you up.
Pressing you against the wall, he holds you in a tight grip with one arm while he opens his pants to free his aching cock. “Fuck…” Holding tight onto Steve with one arm slung around his neck you grab his length to stroke him slowly.
Throwing his head back Steve moans when you move your hand faster, swiping your thumb over the tip.
“Baby, if you don’t stop I can’t make you feel good.” Groaning now he crushes his lips onto yours, tongue tasting every inch of your wet cavern he moves your body as if you weigh nothing to help you guide his cock into your heat.
“Steve…” Pawing at his shoulders you watch his face contort the moment he slides into you with one long stroke, bottoming out with a shout of your name.
It’s hot, messy and a bit uncomfortable but you don’t care at all. Your body at Steve’s mercy you watch him work his cock into you at a maddening pace.
“Missed you so much, Baby. I was so worried when you just ran off…” Snapping his hips against yours Steve grips your ass tighter to squeeze your tender flesh roughly.
“God, Rogers…” Your walls cling to his length, almost suffocating him every time he bottoms out inside of you. “Fuck…”
“Then I heard you got arrest…” Steve groans against your lips, breathing you in. Your arms wrap around his neck to kiss along his jawline. “All I could think about was to find you…”
“Steve…”
Hands moving through his hair you moan with every hard thrust Steve gives you. It feels like he’s fucking you straight into the wall, causing your back to bruise but you don’t care. You will admire the bruises later but right now all you want is to come.
“I want you, only you. Not Peggy or Sharon. You are on my mind. How could you just leave me?” Growling Steve crushes his hips into yours pushing you violently off the cliff.
Your pussy pulses around him but he doesn’t slow down. Bringing you through your high he chases his release. Panting you move your hips with Steve’s, gently sliding your fingers through his hair as his lips meet yours the moment he comes inside of you.
“I had to go as I thought you want Sharon.” Forehead pressed against yours Steve moans against your lips, trying to catch his breath.
“No…I want you, Baby.”
—-
Awkwardly glancing at Steve kissing down your collarbone you don’t know how to break the tension. He seems to be hurt as you just left but there’s still the fact he kissed Sharon right in front of you.
“I left as you kissed her and I thought I wasted my heart on you.” Steve hums still kissing your skin softly while his hands roam your body.
“Only kissed her as I wanted to make you jealous. I saw you going out with this boring guy. Thought I need to catch your attention.” Lips traveling down your stomach Steve gasp when you fist his hair, forcing him to look up at you.
“Next time ask me out instead of making out with a random chick, Rogers.”
“I think you should learn how to address your commanding officer properly. Maybe…” Crawling up your body Steve smirks when you spread your legs for him while your hands slide over his arms. “I need to show you how to be my girlfriend. Let’s see…”
When you start moaning once again Steve bites your neck playfully, marking you for everyone to see you are his girl…

Bucky Barnes x Reader | Part 5
Summary: You and your best friend have been property of Hydra since you were children. You disappeared during WWII and were never seen again.
James Buchanan Barnes is struggling. He can’t tell the difference between memory and dreams. The counselor tells him you aren’t real. He’d do anything to prove her wrong.
Parts: Introduction  Part 1  Part 2  Part 3  Part 4  Part 6
Fic Type: Bucky Barnes x Reader Series
Warnings: mentions of Hydra being Hydra
Author’s Note: If anyone is good at relationship advice, hmu because I need help.
It had been just a year past the Civil War, when Tony Stark received information on the Hydra base in Siberia. Helmut Zemo, as it turned out, was wrong about Hydra’s other super soldiers in Siberia. They were all dead. All but two of them. Naturally, Bucky was on the first plane out to Siberia once he had found out. No one tried to stop him. Everyone knew that if there was even half a hope that they were alive, he was going.
---
James Buchanan Barnes walked along the rows of Hydra-built-and-trained soldiers who were frozen in suspended animation. Memories washed over him, wave after wave until he was struggling to keep his head above the sea of his thoughts. He was drowning in his own mind. Therapy had not been helping. At the far end on the left, he stopped. He stood directly in between the two last capsules, staring through the glass at the familiar faces on the other side. The largest wave yet washed over him, and he was swept away in the seafoam of memories.
The Winter Soldier analysed the beings standing in front of him. They were still children, hardly ten years old.
“002 and 003,” Zola cracked a twisted smile. “My newest creations. Hydra super soldiers, with elemental control.”
The two girls stood side by side, and even in their appearance they contrasted each other. The H/C haired girl Zola had identified as 002, had eyes that glowed and sparkled like burning coals. Embers of golden light flashed amongst the flames that her eyes seemed to dance with, a dangerous spiral of scarlet and umber. They held emotion and passion and fury, concentrated into a venomous glare. The F/H/C haired girl that stood next to her had eyes of winter. Unlike 002, 003’s eyes were devoid of emotion and life. They were as cold and blue as ice, hardened against pain or love, anything that might have made her human. Though through the hardness, they still sparkled like snow in the early morning sunrise.
The Winter Soldier suspected that their personalities and powers were just as contrasted as their appearance. Fire and ice. Dangerous storms, reckless, devastating, but if controlled properly would be powerful assets to Hydra, despite their youth.
“They were designed for this purpose…” Continued Zola, “And others. The first phase of their mission is to capture the Captain America. When all the phases are complete, I will have them terminated. By that time there will be no use for them anymore.”
The first phase was never completed. Bucky stared at the frozen figures morosely. Hydra had believed that if they could bring in Captain America, they would win the war. Zola had made them his mission. The Winter Soldier himself had trained them. He had trained them to become Hydra soldiers. Starving them, torturing them, depriving them of any basic needs in the name of making them tolerant to any pain or emotion. He realized now how much suffering they must have gone through. They were young at the time he had been introduced to them. Before that, they had been experimented on with no limits. They had been stolen from their families as children, taken away to be disfigured. Taken apart, and rebuilt to serve the needs of Hydra. Their memories were wiped and replaced with the sole instinct to obey and kill. They had no names, and no identity of their own. They were simply known as 002 and 003. He had never found out what had become of 001.
---
002 and 003 had been taken back to Tony Stark’s lab. Papers had been signed, and government organizations had been bribed. It took a hefty sum to sway them into letting Tony take them. Being taken out of suspended animation after so long had shocked their bodies, resulting in a comatose state. Until they woke up, no one was allowed in, excluding the doctors and medical technicians that were caring for them.
Bucky had waited outside of the medical room until he had fallen asleep. Steve had found him and woken him up, prompting him to go to bed.
Yet when he got to his room, he couldn’t sleep. He tossed and turned, and eventually gave up. Bucky sat on the edge of his bed, still uncomfortable with the way it felt. He rested his head in his hands, trying to suppress all the painful memories that were keeping him awake. His eyes were closed, and mind so focused he didn’t even hear Steve Rogers enter the room.
Steve laid a hand on his friend’s shoulder. “Who are they?”
Buck opened his eyes, but they remained fixed on the floor. “Mutants. Designed for death, destruction, and… carnal knowledge.”
“Hydra’s favorite toys.” Steve confirmed.
“Children. They were just- just children.” He choked out. “And I- You... They were built to capture you for Hydra.”
Steve took a breath. He grabbed Bucky’s desk chair and pulled it over to where he was sitting. “Why did they want me?”
Bucky shook his head, looking up for the first time at his friend. Shock struck through Steve like a lightning bolt when he saw how much pain radiated in Buck’s eyes.
“You were their mission.” Bucky began tentatively. “They were taken as children to be built for a mission that would last until Hydra deemed them no longer useful. I trained- I trained them. Tortured them, starved them of basic human needs.” Bucky took a shaky breath. “They became as strong as me. Perhaps even more with their powers.” He paused, every muscle in his body tensed. “Once they were completed, they put me in cryofreeze to preserve my age. They let the girls grow and develop, working towards capturing you. In the meantime, they used 002 to control me. They saw my sympathy and exploited it using her as leverage. They, Hydra, thought they would win the war. Hydra would wipe you, like me, and you would become one of their soldiers. By then, they hoped the girls would be old enough.”
Steve’s rigid body language said everything, but he asked his question anyway, voice grim. “Old enough for what?”
“Carnal knowledge.” Bucky answered. “Hydra planned to give you your first mission.”
“No.”
“The final phase of their mission.” Bucky was damn near crying at the thought. “Hydra planned to force us to breed with them. Create the ultimate mutant super soldiers. Once they could no longer have children, they would be terminated.”
Steve shook his head. If Hydra had survived, if Zemo had woken 002 and 003 up… “Tell me about them.”
Bucky ducked his head and winced, trying to recall the memories that were slipping through his fingers. “I-I… I remember 002 the best. She was pyrokinetic; could control and create fire with the flick of her hand. She was the one I gave my dog tags to. They were German, I didn’t speak enough of the language to be able to communicate with them. By the time I became fluent in all the languages Hydra taught me, it was too late.”
Steve nodded, unsure of what to say. He wanted to help his friend get through this, but it was all so much.
“I remember… I told- I told them a story once. Hydra tried to make me forget, and it didn’t work. They sent me in to torture them, and instead I sat down and told them a story. I told them about Brooklyn and America and you. I told them about everything I didn’t want to forget.” Bucky unclenched his fists. “And then Hydra found out what had happened. The rest of the day was suffering. For me anyway. I don’t even want to know what happened to them.”
The air is heavy with silence after Bucky speaks, when suddenly a scream shreds the silence to ribbons.

Chapter 01: Watch Your Back
“God, I never knew!” Bucky sighed, “Now I feel like a jerk for making it about me.” Steve chuckled. He was inspecting the iPod. “So you really like her, huh,” he asked with a lopsided smirk. “There’s something different about her, something I haven’t felt since Hydra,” the dark haired man said as he looked down at his hands.
“You should ask her out,” Steve said going through the songs on the device.
“I don’t think I’m ready for that yet. Besides how do I know if she likes me?”
“I think she likes you, Buck. She doesn’t make handpicked playlists for everyone in the compound,” Steve joked, “All you have to do this use your old Brooklyn charm and that cocky smirk . It worked on that brunette at Cooney Island, maybe it’ll work on her”
“That was way back in the day, Steve. Besides that brunette was more interested in you,” Bucky said with a chuckle, making Steve laugh.
__
The stateswoman was unharmed and inside the safety of her own home. There were two attempts on her life but they were averted. And now your mission was over.
As you made your way back to the tower, you couldn’t help your mind wandering back to that fateful day. Their screams echoed in your head and your heart pounded against your chest.
Once inside your room, you took a cold shower, running your hands through your hair as if trying to push the thoughts away. If only I had acted faster. If only I had been more competent. You could feel the temperature rising inside you, the cold shower powerless and futile against your body. Your heart pounded against your chest. You turned off the shower and got out.
You tossed and turned in your bed. Tired yet restless. The screams started to echo again. You decided to hit the gym. You walked down the corridor Led Zeppelin blasting in your ears, when you felt the touch of cold metal on your shoulder.
You turned around to find Bucky standing there with a bowl of popcorn. He was wearing a black short sleeved shirt that hung loosely on his body. His shoulder length dark hair was pulled back into a loose bun. His metal arm was on display in all its glory, the gold woven across the black metal glittered and glowed. He didn’t try to hide it; he didn’t have to, cause it was close to midnight and everyone else was asleep, everyone except you and him.
You took off your earphones and he smiled at you warmly as he spoke, “I heard your mission went well. Told you you’d do great.”
You returned his smile, “Yeah thanks Bucky. What’re you doing up so late?”
“I could ask you the same thing,” he said smirking at you and your heart beat quickened again, but for a different reason this time.
“I’m just going to hit the gym. Run a few laps and train for a bit,” you answered, trying to maintain your composure.
“Didn’t you just get back a few minutes ago?” concern laced his voice.
“Yeah, but I couldn’t sleep and I’m actually not that tired.”
“No.” His voice was stern and commanding and it took you by surprise.
“Excuse me?”
“You’re not going to the gym. You’re going back to your room and you’re going to get some rest.”
“Bucky, what…” You started but he cut you off.
“If you don’t go back to bed, I’m going to call Steve.”
“You wouldn’t,” you let out a nervous chuckle.
“Wouldn’t I?” He said with a playful smirk. “STEE….”
Your hand quickly shot up to his lips on instinct covering his mouth, “NO. Please don’t. He’ll come down here and give me a two hour lecture and I won’t get any sleep either way.” Heat rose to your cheeks when you realized that your hands were still on his lips. His lips are so soft. You quickly moved your hand away and looked down to hide your blush, “Sorry I didn’t mean to.”
Bucky’s own face blushed furiously, he almost dropped the bowl of popcorn at your touch. “Your hands.. it’s.. they’re so warm,” he stumbled over his words and mentally kicked himself because telling someone that their hands are warm is a shitty way to flirt. You chuckled, “Yeah, it’s cause of the … powers,” you shrugged.
“Oh,” he said softly and then suddenly he remembered the conversation you were having, his voice once again stern, “Fine, I won’t call Steve but you have to get some rest. You’ve been on back to back missions for the past two weeks. You’ve barely slept and you’re clearly exhausted. You need to sleep. Please.” His voice was soft and concerned again and you looked into his eyes.
“I appreciate your concern Bucky, but I really can’t go to sleep right now,” you said. You knew for sure that if you slept tonight, you’d have those nightmares again. You shuddered at the thought of their burned bodies that often appeared in the horrors your mind created. Your face must’ve given away your thoughts.
“I understand,” he said softly. He thought for a while before he spoke again. “But I can’t let you go back to training.” He paused briefly before continuing, wondering if it was the right thing to say, “I was going to watch a movie,” he gestured towards the monitor in the living room, “maybe you and I could watch it together. We’ll watch something boring and then you can slowly drift off to sleep.”
You hesitated, biting your lip. “Come on, it’ll be fun,” he extended his free hand, “I need some company and you can’t say no to a 100 year old man.” No, you can’t. Not when he looks that cute. You smiled and took his hand and led you to the couch in the living room.
He picked up a DVD from the rack. ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ it read. “Sam told me these movies are good, which means they must be boring,” he said as he loaded the movie and grabbed the remote. He took his place in the corner of the couch, with his metal hand slightly touching yours.
“I don’t know about that. The Harry Potter movies are pretty good, not as good as the books, but still,” you told him as he passed you the popcorn. “I’ll be the judge of that,” he joked, pressing play.
20 minutes into the movie and it was evident that Bucky Barnes loved Harry Potter. “I’m not getting any sleepier, Barnes,” you turned to him and joked. “Just give it a few more minutes,” he said not moving his eyes away from the screen.
“You like the movie, don’t you?” You teased him.
“What! No, it’s terrible,” he looked at you, “just like I told you it would be.”
You just stared at him with a smile. He’s so cute.
“Alright, maybe it’s a little interesting,” he said as he rubbed his right arm.
“Are you cold?” you asked him, puzzled as he rubbed his flesh arm again with his metal one, trying to generate some heat. “A little,” he said as he turned his attention back to the movie, “Tony broke the thermostat experimenting with something. He hasn’t gotten it fixed yet. Didn’t you notice?”
“No, I can regulate my body temp by generating internal heat” you answered.
“Oh right, I keep forgetting that you’re pyrokinetic,” He sucked in a harsh breath and exhaled slowly, rubbing his arms again.
“Can’t handle the cold Sergeant?” you quipped and he chuckled, leaning into the leather couch for warmth.
“Let me help,” you said. “May I?” Your hand hovered above his chest and he looked at you with confusion. “Just trust me,” your voice was barely above a whisper. He nodded and you gently placed your hand on his abdomen.
Instant warmth spread where you touched his body. His muscles initially tensed at your touch but he slowly relaxed more and more the longer your hand lingered. You laid back on the couch, your head rested right next to his vibranium shoulder. His long brown hair masked his flushed cheeks. He wanted to thank you but he didn’t trust his voice to not break. He could no longer concentrate on the movie.
The nervousness overtook his body and you sensed it. “Relax. Just let the heat flow through you,” you said as your eyelids grew heavy. You saw him nod again before you closed your eyes. __
Neither of you would reveal how safe you felt next to each other the night before. Nevertheless, it was still true.
When you woke up in the morning
__
The next morning you woke up a little later than usual. Your head was resting on his metal shoulder and his vibranium hand lightly rested on your thigh, your hand had moved up to his chest and was lightly clutching the fabric of his shirt. His cheeks were tinged a little red and you assumed it was because of the cold. It wasn’t.
You slowly got up from the couch, trying not to wake the sleeping Wolf. You walked back to your room slowly and got into the shower. As the cold water hit your back, you recalled that you hadn’t had any nightmares the previous night or at least you didn’t remember, but you always remember every single detail. That’s new.
You didn’t have any more missions for the next two days, so you decided to try the gym. “Hey, stranger,” Nat said as you entered the room. She was training with Wanda again. “Hey, mind if I join you guys?” you said as both Natasha and Wanda pulled you into a hug. You sparred with them for a while. You and the Widow teamed up on Wanda much to the Witch’s chagrin.
You decided to head back to your room for a quick shower before grabbing lunch. You, Wanda and Sam lived on the fifth floor together. The floor had extra fire extinguishers and a landing pad for Sam.
As the lift door parted, you found that the entire floor was in complete ruins. There was a big fire in the middle of the room and the sprinklers were activated. A deployed parachute lay on the side, trying to fly out the window. There was rubble and broken concrete everywhere along with what you thought might be carbon fiber. And in the midst of it all was Sam in his bird suit.
“What happened?” Wanda asked as she scanned the room.
“We were doing a flight test for Sam’s new suit and uh… as you can see from the carnage, it didn’t work out so well,” Tony spoke as he peaked his head out of his hiding spot behind the bar.
“Why were you testing out the suit here?” you asked.
“We weren’t. I was flying outside and the suit was doing really good. It’s when I came to land that it started making problems. It’s all Tony’s fault,” Sam said, shooting the billionaire an accusatory look.
“Hey! It’s not my fault that you can’t stick a decent landing,” Tony retorted.
“Enough, both of you,” Wanda said, “FRIDAY, call a cleaning crew to fifth floor, please.”
“Yes, ma’am. Right away. But I’m afraid you may have to change lodgings for a while until the floor is restored to its original condition.”
“Well, that’s just great,” you said sarcastically.
A few minutes later the cleaning crew arrived. You tried to salvage as much as you could from your room. You picked up anything that wasn’t soaked wet and headed over to the elevator. Sam and Wanda were already inside. Sam was moving to the basement and Wanda was moving to the second floor. “Where are you headed?” Sam asked. “Third floor,” you said, letting out a long sigh.
“Cap’s floor? Whew, good luck getting some sleep,” he joked.
“What do you mean?”
“You’ll see.”
__
“They fired you already?” Nat joked as she saw you exit the elevator. You laughed, “Sam made a mess of our floor. I’m staying here until the cleaning crew fixes it.”
“You can stay as long as you like,” Steve greeted you, “Join us for lunch, we have extra food.”
“In a minute, I’m going to shower,” you said and walked over to your new room right opposite to Bucky’s.
__
You placed your box of things on your bed and looked around your new room. You got into the shower and your mind wandered to the scene you saw in the fifth floor. The fire in the middle of the room beckoned to you with its warmth. It evoked a feeling inside of you that you’ve suppressed for months. Your fingertips burned and you had a heavy feeling in your chest, like it was aching to let something go. No, you can’t.
You set the shower to the coldest setting possible and got in. You bones trembled and your teeth clattered but this was necessary. The burning sensation in your hands vanished but the ache in your chest remained. There was nothing else you could do about it.
You joined Nat and Steve in the kitchen after a few minutes. “Where’s James?” you ask, a little too enthusiastically. “Probably brooding in his room,” Natasha said as she passed you a plate, “He’ll come out after we’re gone.”
“Don’t worry about him, I saved some food for him already,” Steve said and started eating. You nodded and ate your own food.
Before you went back to your room after dinner, you decided to make some dessert for yourself. After all you deserved it after such a hard day. You raided the kitchen and found butter, almonds, sugar, honey and flour, so you made a honey cake with burnt butter and almonds, naturally. You ate half of it and put the rest in a box and placed it in the fridge with a note that read “For Bucky”.

With nothing else to do, you decided to hit the bed a little earlier than usual. You tossed and turned in your bed but sleep refused to come to you. Just as you were finally drifting off to sleep, a guttural scream pulled you from the depths of slumber.
You woke up startled and pulled the gun out from under your pillow. “FRIDAY, what’s going on?”
Your initial thoughts were that maybe you were under attack but you realized that the alarms didn’t go off and besides there would be a lot more noise if that had been the case.
The AI’s voice spoke up, “I believe Sergeant Barnes is having a nightmare, Miss Y/N. I detect overactivity in his amygdala and an increased heart rate but he’s still asleep.” Oh, so that’s what Sam was talking about.
Another scream.
“Would you like to enable the noise cancellation systems? I would recommend some music as well,” FRIDAY’s robotic voice spoke again.
“No FRIDAY. Thank you.”
And with that you were left alone with the screaming soldier. Your heart broke as you heard him pleading for them – Hydra – to stop. Broken whimpers and strained struggles echoed from his room.
You debated if you should go to his room to console him or if you should let him get through it on his own. You hoped that Steve would go to him like he usually did but you remembered that he left for a mission after dinner.
The desperation in his voice broke you out of your thoughts and you found yourself in front of his door in seconds. He had calmed down now. His nightmares were over but you could still hear him sobbing on the other side of the door.
You gently knocked on his door and the room became eerily quiet. When there was no answer you knocked again, “Bucky, it’s me Y/N. Can you please open the door?” you spoke softly.
You heard the bolt clicking and the door parted slightly revealing a disheveled Bucky Barnes who stood there in all his glory – red eyes, hair wet with sweat and sticking to the side of his face, streaks of tears running down his cheeks, his body trembling slightly despite his best efforts to hide it.
He looked down at his feet as he spoke, his voice strained, gravelly and barely above a whisper, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wa..” You cut off his apology, “Can I come in?”
He looked up at you at the unexpected request. He hesitated for a moment before he opened the door wider and stepped aside to let you in. His room looked exactly like you had last seen it – empty. His bed was still neatly made up and you looked down to see his pillow and a blanket strewn across on the floor.
He picked up the blanket and sat down on the floor with his knees pulled up to his chest as he fidgeted with the blanket in his hands, pulling at a loose thread. He kept his eyes trained to his hands and didn’t try to speak.
You knelt down next to him, careful to avoid any sudden movements so as not to startle him. “It’s okay Buck. Everything’s okay. You’re safe,” you said softly, hoping they were the right words. You slowly moved your hand to hold his right hand, letting it linger for a moment, giving him a chance to refuse it if he wanted to. When he didn’t, you slowly placed your hand over his and gently rubbed his knuckles. You wanted to hold him close, hug him as tight as possible and comfort him but this was all you could do now and you were content with that. His flesh hand was tense initially but you slowly felt him loosen up and eventually he let his hand lightly grip yours.
You both stayed there like that for a long time, just holding hands in comfortable silence as Bucky slowly recovered from his terrors. “Thank you,” he finally broke the silence, “for this,” he said as he lightly squeezed your hand. “Anytime, Buck,” you smiled at him softly.
“Do you mind… Would you, uhm,” he was hesitant. You brushed your thumb over his hand reassuringly and he continued, “Do you mind staying here, I mean with me, just for a little while?” he sounded so cautious and careful as if he was afraid of you saying no, as if you would ever say no. “Of course, if that’s what you want,” you replied. He nodded and you thought you saw a brief smile on his face.
You shifted to sit on your hind legs, your legs were beginning to get numb. Bucky noticed and he grabbed a pillow from his bed when something white and solid fell to the ground. You picked it up – it was the iPod you gave him earlier. It was still playing and the music flowed from the earbuds – low and muffled.
“It helps me sleep,” he said sheepishly as he handed you the pillow and his comforter. You propped up the pillow on the wall and laid back against it with the comforter draped over your lap as you sat cross legged. Bucky mimicked your posture, your knees slightly overlapping as he continued, “You were right, I actually liked the music.”
“I’m glad you did,” you replied. ‘I can’t handle change by ROAR’ began to play on the device and an idea popped into your head. You placed one of the buds in your ear as you leaned towards Bucky and handed one to him. He smiled at you and took it.
A few more minutes passed, he had lightened up now and was almost back to his usual self when he spoke again, “You know I was wondering, if it’s not too much trouble, if you could add some songs from the 40s? I had a few favorites back then and I don’t know how to find them and I’d like to listen to them again. But you know, only if you want to, I don’t want to pressure you or anything. But you’re probably busy. Forget it. I shouldn’t…”. You cut off his rambling, “It’s alright Buck. I’ll help you find them.”
You couldn’t help but smile at how he hesitated and rambled when he asked you for help and how he lit up when you said yes. “Well, there’s quite a few. Can I send you a list later?” he asked now with a wide smile. “Sure. You know if you want to, there’s this cool record shop downtown and they have vinyls of some really old songs. We could go and check it out some time,” you replied. “Yeah, I think I’d like that,” he said as he gave you a warm smile.
You chose your words carefully as you thought about what you wanted to say, “James, you can always ask me for anything you need, I’ll always be there to help you,” – because as cute as it was to see him get nervous and stumble over his words, you wished he was more comfortable around you.
He smiled and nodded, a real genuine smile, “Thank you Y/N, really, for everything. All of it…meant a lot to me,” he said as he looked down at his hands again.
“You don’t have to thank me Barnes. Cause this is what team mates do – they look out for each other, remember?”
You stayed in Bucky’s room until dawn and finally left when the sunlight started bleeding in through the curtains. You were surprised at how comfortable it felt with him; you weren’t the only one – Bucky was surprised as well. Even Steve was always a little bit on guard with Bucky after a nightmare – like he could snap at any moment.
He couldn’t exactly blame Steve for that, because he feels the same way himself most of the time. But when he saw you that night, he sensed nothing but concern in you – not even an ounce of fear. You comforted him without a second thought, you were willing to stay silent and just hold his hand if that was what he wanted. You felt safe around him and that warmed his heart.
Sitting next you in his room, holding your hand and listening to music while his skin basked in the warm but cool light of dawn, he felt a semblance of peace and calm that he had felt in Wakanda. He felt something warm and familiar, something soft and safe. Oh, and how he longed for that feeling now as he lay in bed, trying to sleep a little before the sun rises.
You had left for a training session with freshmen agents but not before you insisted on him getting some sleep as he had barely slept last night. And he couldn’t protest when you brushed his knuckles gently with your thumb and looked at him with those soft (e/c) eyes. He was listening to the songs on your iPod, hoping they music would help him drift off.
He looked at his hands, trying to imagine what it felt like to have your hands in his. He liked that your hands were calloused and a little rough – perks of the job – they grounded him, made everything that much more real. He wished he could just sit by your side in comfortable silence as your hands lightly gripped his, slender fingers drawing soothing circles on the back of his hand.
The music worked. When ‘Shrike by Hozier’ started playing, his eyelids started growing heavy and he fell into a deep slumber.
__
A knock on his door woke up the Sergeant and he walked over to the door begrudgingly, expecting to see Steve who probably came to check on him. He was surprised to find you instead, standing there with a plate of food in your hands. “Y/N!” he gasped, his hands wiping the drool of his face instinctively.
“Hey there, sleepy head,” you said cheerfully. “Hi,” he replied, running his hand through his hair and adjusting his shirt as he took in the sight before him.
You were dressed casually, black trackpants and a red shirt. Your hair was tied back loosely and you smelled faintly of sweat and something sweet that he couldn’t quite put his hands on and he wondered why he didn’t notice it last night. “I brought you lunch,” you held up the plate suggestively.
He stepped aside to let you in, “Lunch?” he asked confused. What time is it? You walked in and placed the food on his table, “It’s 2 pm, Bucky. You missed breakfast,” you said as you flashed him an easy smile, “I made caramel pie though. I saved some for you, it’s in the fridge.” That explains the sweet scent. He returned your smile, “Thank you.”
“Are you feeling better?” you asked when his gaze finally met yours. “Yeah, yeah. Much better,” he answered as he inspected his food, “Hey, I just wanted to say … Thank you for staying last night. I know I said it last night, but ..”. He was cut off by your voice, “It’s okay, Buck, really,” you said reassuringly.
“And thank you for the lunch and the pie and the cake before that,” he continued. “Okay, seriously you have to stop thanking me,” you said playfully, “it’s just lunch.”
Another smile pulled at his lips as he began eating, he was hungry. “Have you eaten yet?” he asked suddenly looking a little guilty. You let out a little chuckle, “Yeah, I did. Just eat already.”
You left after catching him up about Steve’s mission – things got a little complicated and he won’t be back for another two weeks. Bucky let out a long sigh at that. You tried to joke about how the laundry won’t be stained red and blue for the next two weeks and he chuckled weakly.
__
Bucky thought the next couple of weeks were going to be tough without Steve. He worried about having more nightmares, they seemed to be getting more frequent. Sure you were there to help him that one time but he knew he couldn’t expect you to comfort him every time. You were eventually going to get annoyed and just turn on FRIDAY’s noise cancelling systems like everyone else on the floor. He was wrong, dead wrong.
The next time he had a nightmare, you woke him up and held him as he calmed down. Your calloused hands rubbed his back gently as he slowly came back to reality. He wrapped his arms around you tightly and sobbed into your shoulder as you ran your fingers through his soft brown locks, whispering confirmations of safety in his ears. Once again, you stayed with him till sunrise, a gentle grip on his hand, sweet music playing in your ears as you both sat together in silence.
You continued comforting him even after the Captain came back from his mission. Once Steve rushed to Bucky’s room after being awoken by his screams only to find him wrapped in your arms, already calmer.
Bucky used to dread going to sleep, afraid of what he’d have to see in his dreams. He would work out all night at the gym and punch it out if he could. But ever since you, he fell asleep easily knowing that if he drowned in his nightmares, you would always be there to save him. He knew that if he had to face the horrors of his mind, you would be right there beside him.
Though the days you were gone were hard for him. He’d have a nightmare and his face would fall when he saw Steve after waking up. He was glad that his best friend was there for him yet he couldn’t help but yearn for your bruised and warm touch.
On the days you were gone, he’d lay back against the wall and watch the sunrise through the windows like he did with you on those particularly tough nights. He missed your warm smile and your desserts that you made whenever you could, always leaving some for him in the fridge. He had grown to love them and he decided that your peach pie was his favorite, though the plum pudding was a close second.
Meanwhile your iPod had also became an essential part of his life. He found himself playing it whenever he could – while he was in the shower or while he was doing meticulous paperwork. He learned to use the speakers specifically for that. He even took it out with him on missions and listened to it during the flight. There was never a night where he slept without the it, clutching it in his hands as the music soothed him into a deep sleep.
