WHUMPTOBER MASTERLIST
Wishes were more often than not granted in ways one would not expect, but that didn't mean seeing a 6 foot tall Super Soldier going through withdrawal in Steve’s apartment was an unwelcome surprise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There was so much Bucky had not accounted for in his plan of escape - he just needed to get the hell away from the dark cells that held him, and the glowing halos of light that crackled and singed; burning away his memories like the wick of a candle.
Since that fight on the bridge against the woman with hair brighter than fire, and the man with the shield, it had been different.
More flashes of memories wreaked havoc on both his waking hours, and the fitful periods of sleep he did manage, all of them the same thing - an eerie green lit room with a man standing over him calling him Bucky, and Bucky could not help but think how the hell Steve had gotten so tall, or big, for chrissakes.
The room was dark with nothing but the soft glow of a lamp to illuminate his way once he slipped through the open window. His eyes adjusted quickly, but it didn’t stop the stab of pain that burned against his retinas.
Every step away from his captors seemed to make the blood burn through his veins, and his stomach roiled with a vicious nausea he’d only experienced once before in his life. And by God, he was not going back to them so they could fix it like they did last time.
A quiet groan of pain left Bucky’s chest before he could suppress it and he winced, and a hand shot out to brace himself against the wall by the window. His clothes were sticking to his skin with how soaked he was with fevered sweat.
Bucky wanted it to stop, and he could only feel that this man, Steve, would help him. It was either that or put him out of his misery and finish the fight from the bridge, and Bucky could not help but be undecided on which he’d rather. He was tired.
Suddenly, a set of footsteps echoed down the hallway of the room he was hidden in, and Bucky cursed his inability to keep quiet - he was in no shape or form to put up a fight against a hostile. To make matters worse, Bucky’s vision was clouding over as though he was looking through a burlap sack, and he could taste iron - blood? - in his mouth and over his teeth.
The footsteps were getting louder and louder and louder in Bucky’s ears, a constant thump, thump, thump against his skull - please, stop, Bucky begged when a cloud of black obscured his vision for no longer than a second. He was defenceless and weak, there was no way he could fight back.
Light flooded into the room when the door opened and Bucky startled with a quiet gasp, flinching from the sudden halo of light behind the figure.
“Bucky?”
A beat of silence passed while Bucky watched the figure approach with their arms outstretched slightly, a gesture of surrender that Bucky had ignored so many times. But, the voice, it sounded like the man on the bridge - maybe this was Steve? He’d take that chance.
“Steve?” Bucky tried; his voice was hoarse from disuse. That didn’t matter, however, because the figure continued their advance with their hands still outstretched.
“Yeah, it’s me,” Steve said quietly, careful to keep some distance between them. “Wh-What’re you doing here? Are you hurt?”
Bucky stared into Steve’s face and considered his answer. It wasn’t as though he was hiding his pain very well - the burn in his veins and the cramps of his stomach were making his breathing laboured, and he felt hot and cold at the same time. His vision wasn’t clear either, and he could feel the hammering beat of his heart against his ribs, and for the first time, he realised he was terrified.
“Yeah,” Bucky swallowed thickly against the bile in his throat. Something was wrong, he could feel his muscles tense unnnaturally and his skull - the thump would not fucking stop.
“Okay,” Steve started gently, pushing further into Bucky’s space and Bucky tried to not flinch away. The loss of clear vision and sluggish chain of command in his body was fraying at his already compromised nerves. “Where does it hurt, Buck? I can-”
It was sudden, that’s all Bucky knew before his eyes rolled up and to the side. The last thing he saw was Steve’s frightened expression, his mouth forming a shout Bucky would not hear.
Tumblr media
“Bucky!”
Bucky dropped like a dead weight to the floor, and the loud clang of his metal arm against the floorboards jarred Steve into motion. “Oh, God!”
It was unlike anything Steve had seen before, but instinct kicked in well before he could let the fear take control.
Quickly, Steve pulled down a pillow from the bed and placed it under Bucky’s head in between harsh jerks of his neck. Bucky’s breathing, God, his breathing, it was ragged and the muscles of his body strained against the combat gear as he thrashed.
“I’m here, Buck,” he tried over the loud gurgles from Bucky’s throat that forced a rivulet of drool from his mouth. “It’ll be over soon.”
It was a promise he had no idea if he could keep, but dammit if it would help him keep calm as Bucky thrashed? He was going to swear to it.
Bucky’s arm twitched and the plates whirred under the strain, the worn leather of his glove almost splitting at the seams with the tension in hand until suddenly, it all stopped.
He was eerily still and quiet on the floor.
His head rested on top of the pillow where a puddle of drool had collected at his chin, and his shoulders slumped like the strings that tormented him were cut. The whirring sounds from the plates on his arm had stopped with his thrashing.
“Bucky?” Steve questioned quietly but there was no answer. “Are you-” A choking noise interrupted Steve and he panicked. “No, no, you-”
The dead weight of the former Winter Soldier was no laughing matter, and if it wasn’t for the serum, Steve would not have been able to push Bucky onto his side, and slam his palm between Bucky’s shoulders with enough force to break a ‘normal’ human’s ribs. Bucky spluttered and coughed until a hawk of spit dislodged itself from his throat and landed on the far side of the pillow.
Steve watched with an immeasurable sense of relief when Bucky inhaled a shuddery breath, exhaled with another cough, and then fell silent.
“Mother Mary, and Joseph.”
If Sam were here, he would laugh.
Bucky’s form was still limp on the floor with no signs of him stirring, so Steve - ever so carefully - placed one arm under Bucky’s knees, the other behind his shoulders, and pulled Bucky up so he could stand with him cradled to his chest.
Thankfully, Steve’s bed was not even a few steps away.
“What the hell happened to you,” Steve grunted as he lowered Bucky onto the bed. “I never thought I’d see you again, y’know.”
Steve knew Bucky wouldn’t answer, but it was all he could do to stop himself from losing his cool from seeing Bucky; the Winter Soldier, the man who not even a week ago tried to kill him, his best friend, the love of his life, in his apartment and hurting.
As though on cue, Steve’s phone rang and he hurried to answer it. Sam.
“Hey, man, where are you? Nat found a lead.” Steve could hear Nat in the background typing away quickly, and he braced himself. “Steve?”
“I need help, he,” Steve trialled off, staring at Bucky’s body lying on his bed. “He’s here, Sam.”
There was a commotion over the phone, and Nat spoke. “How hurt is he?”
“I’m not sure,” Steve moved back towards Bucky, still unconscious but breathing. “He had a fit of some kind, but I can’t-”
“He’s been without their ‘help’ for too long, you need to keep his airways clear. We’re on our way.”
Click.
“Well, that was helpful.” Steve mumbled half-heartedly.
A quiet groan made Steve jump almost a foot in the air - he hadn’t expected Bucky to come ‘round this quick. “Buck, you’re okay,” he soothed. Bucky slowly opened his eyes but did not move, from exhaustion or fear, Steve couldn’t tell - all that mattered was that he was awake, and still breathing.
His eyes were unfocused and glazed over, but he found Steve’s gaze and held it with a litany of expressions passing through them quicker than the blink of an eye. Another groan left him and his hand twitched, like he wanted to grab ahold of something.
Steve realised suddenly that Bucky was reaching for his hand that rested on the comforter.
“Here, here,” Steve whispered, quickly kneeling to the floor so he was eye level with Bucky. He offered his hand and Bucky’s own twitched again, so Steve grabbed it gently.
Bucky’s expression went from scared to content; he even managed a twitch of a smile.
“Do you remember me, Buck?” Steve asked, somewhat scared of the answer but Bucky only stayed silent, his eyes roving over Steve’s face with dulled interest. “You do, don’t you?” A squeeze of his hand was the only answer he received - but it was more than enough.
“You found your way home,” Steve said, furiously wiping his eyes at the sudden burn of tears. “They couldn’t keep you from me, could they?”
Another squeeze of his hand, and Steve smiled. Home, we’re both home.

Pairing: Bucky x Fem!Avenger!Reader
Word count: ~3.1k
CW: fluff, angst, brief descriptions of a fight (knives, guns). Not a lot of details on the fight but there are graphic mentions of specific wounds and blood. There’s also a switch in writing POV towards the end.
*For the purposes of this one shot Bucky did go to Wakanda but Civil War was not a thing. Everybody’s one big happy family.

"All right minions, are we all clear?"
You roll your eyes and hold back a snicker as you hear Bucky huff next to you. "We're not your minions, Tony".
A sly smirk flits across Tony's face, "But you guys make such great babbling yellow little creatures."
Bucky's brows furrow, you nudge Sam's arm as he starts laughing.
"What the hell are you talking about? What yellow creatures?"
As Tony opens his mouth to say something you step in. "Stark leave him alone already. Stop and catch the bad guys, don't kill unless absolutely necessary, we're all clear. Can we go now?"
Tony smiles at you "Oh come on kid, I'm just having some fun."
You wrinkle your nose and smile back, "Yeah I know, great fun."
As the team heads out of the meeting room, Natasha turns to you.
"You wanna spar a little bit to warm up for tomorrow?"
"Always, I'll meet you down there."
"Bring some waters!" she says as she throws you a wink and heads to the gym.
You turn around scanning the hall for Bucky. "Hey Barnes!"
Bucky turns to you and you immediately feel your cheeks heat up as his ocean blue eyes meet with yours.
"I'm going to spar for a little with Nat, wanna come?"
Giving you a small smile, "That's ok I think I'll head down there a little later. Don't be too mean to each other."
"Hmmm can't really promise that" you say with a smirk. His nose scrunches with a laugh sending butterflies straight to your stomach. God, that's so cute.
"Be nice doll."
You give him your best innocent smile batting your eyelashes.
He shakes his head with a chuckle. "We'll meet up tonight though, right?"
"Of course." You start walking backwards before turning away, "Don't be late Sergeant!"
He straightens up and salutes at you with a wink. "I wouldn't dream of it".
Bucky returned from Wakanda shortly after you had joined the Avengers. He mostly kept to himself, so outside of you two being introduced and quick 'hello's' around the compound you'd never really interacted. The first time you two had an actual conversation was during one of your mandatory training sessions. Tony had booked you up for sessions with each member of the team because he wanted to make sure that you were ready for anything that could possibly be thrown at you. The day you saw you had one with Bucky Barnes himself you almost collapsed.
You were nervous for two reasons. One, you had barely talked to the guy and now you had to try and get the better of him in combat. And two, Bucky Barnes is very much a sight to behold. How the hell were you going to keep your head on straight? But you are a professional and you were going to let it be known.
Bucky was ruthless during training. He was quick, stealthy and his strength far surpassed yours. At one point he put you in a headlock but you were able to get out of it. Landing him on his knees with your training knife against his back. He was quick to praise your move but as quick to bring you back down. As soon as a "that's it doll" left his lips your strength faltered allowing Bucky to best you and have you with your back against the mat and his knife against your neck. Once your time was up he handed you a towel and made sure you were okay and didn't get hurt.
In the days that followed conversations- although still small- flowed better between the two of you. He seemed to be a little more at ease being in your presence. The night before his first mission back, a mere few days after he trained you, you noticed him fidgety and nervous to get back into the fight. You decided to invite him to sit with you and watch a movie to try and help him relax; under the guise of helping him get through Sam's 'Must Watch' List. He was able to feel calm enough to get some sleep and it reflected on the mission.
When he returned, he knocked on your bedroom door and thanked you for lending a helping hand. After that day, movie night turned into your little pre-mission tradition. It had evolved into you guys watching the movie in either of your rooms and whoever's room it wasn't in, was in charge of bringing the snacks.
You arrive to the gym to find Natasha warming up on the treadmill. Taking a seat on a mat close by to stretch a little, she looks at you with a knowing smirk plastered on her face.
"What?"
She gets off the treadmill and smiling at you as she takes a sip of water.
"Couldn't get your man to come down here so you could ogle at him and lose against me like always?"
You scoff and flip her off, "He is not my man, and I definitely don't ogle"
"Yes you do, and so does he."
"You're imagining things, Nat"
"When are you guys just going to admit that you're crazy about each other? Really, it's nauseating" she laughs as you try to focus on your stretches.
"We're not. He's my friend and partner, Nat"
"Yeah, your friend who you want to fuck your brains out".
Your cheeks flush and you stand to move to the center mat.
"It's not like that. Now get in here so I can kick your ass, Widow"
She throws her head back and cackles, "In your dreams, Малышка"
Tumblr media
Just as you're coming out of the shower you hear a knock at your bedroom door.
"Come in! I'll be right out."
"I didn't forget your M&M's this time" you hear Bucky announces from your bedroom. You smile to yourself as you dry yourself up and get dressed. Such a sweetheart.
"Thanks Buck!"
When you emerge from the bathroom, he's sitting at the edge of your bed and throws you that heart-stopping smile holding the bag of candy out to you. You lean down to give him a kiss on the cheek.
"You're an angel, thanks again."
You can see a light pink hue on his cheeks as you move to the other side of the bed to slide under the covers. You drag the tray of snacks carefully to the center of the bed with a small chuckle. There are like 10 different types of candy on there plus sodas, and of course popcorn. This man has a huge sweet tooth. Patting the other side of the bed as a gesture for him to get comfortable, you turn on the TV searching for Netflix.
"So, what's next on the list?" you ask as he takes out the list Sam made for him.
Halfway through the movie you laugh at something and look at Bucky to see his reaction, only to find him looking spaced out munching on some popcorn. You nudge his arm and give him a small smile when he looks at you.
"Everything will be fine tomorrow, it always is." You give his hand a squeeze and lean your head on his shoulder. He tilts his gaze down to meet yours.
"Yeah, yeah. I know." He lets out a breath, rests his head against yours and stays like that for a while.
When the movie ends you turn to him. "We should probably try to rest... but we can watch another one too if you want. You wanna head to bed or do you wanna keep watching?"
Bucky huffs out a laugh. "It's ok, doll. We should get some sleep, I'll get out of your hair."
"If you need anything during the night just come let me know, ok?"
"I don't wanna bother you. You just sleep tight." he says, sliding off of the bed.
You kneel on the bed and grab his wrist. When your eyes meet his you can read the worry in them. Your heart almost splits in two at the sight. With a solemn expression you link your fingers in his.
"YOU will never bother me, Bucky. I need you to know that."
He leans down and places a soft lingering kiss on your forehead.
"I know angel, thank you. Sleep tight." he whispers. With that Bucky heads to his room and you lay back in bed hoping that he can sleep through the night.
As soon as your alarm goes off you sprint to the closet to get your undergear and tactical uniform on. When you pass through the kitchen you see your water bottle set out on the counter and a protein bar. Bucky. You quickly make your way to the quinjet to find the rest of the team ready to head out.
Four hours later you make it to the base camp of the extremist group that you've been after for the past month and a half.
"All right everyone you know what to do. If you get hurt, hurt 'em back. If you get killed, walk it off"
As Steve's finishing his 'pep talk', you give your weapons a last-minute check, making sure your knives are in place and your guns are loaded. You feel someone gently grasp your arm, turning to find Bucky.
"You ready White Wolf?" giving him a calming smile.
He forces a smile and brushes your cheek tenderly with the back of his hand. "Nu mă lăsa azi, te rog"
"I wouldn't dream of it."
Clint, Sam and Bucky are taking care of outside surveillance and back up, with Tony helping from the compound as he hacks into the camps security system. You and Natasha head inside to gather intel and wipe their systems while Steve tries to round up any members there to take them in for questioning.
"Divide and conquer?" you wiggle your brows glancing over to Natasha.
"Let's do this, маленький."
You head West and Natasha takes the computers towards the South side of the base. As you're working through the files you hear static in your comms and quickly after Bucky's out of breath voice sounds in your ear.
"How you doing in there, doll?"
"Almost done, you?"
There's a loud bang that goes off and the ground under you rattles.
"Bucky, what the fuck is going on out there?"
"Oh, all good." he groans, the sound of his metal arm colliding with something accompanies it.
"Think you two can speed things up in there? Steve, we need you back here too."
"Come on ladies, get a move on." Clint comes in through the comms.
"Wilson head towards the back; there's more of them moving into the base." Tony instructs. "Widow, Mamba, wipe and run."
You hear Clint come back on comms. "I'm heading out back to cover you, Wilson."
The ground shakes again and the ceiling in the office you're in starts crumbling down. You pocket the drives and slide across the floor towards the door just in time.
"Heading out! Nat you done?"
"I'm almost out the back babe" she responds.
"I'm getting cornered I need back up over here" you hear Bucky yell through the comms
"I've got you, Buck. I'm heading your way."
You run to reach him outside and call to Sam just as you're out the door. "Hey Sammy, think you can give some air support?"
"On your left" You turn your head up and meet his gaze throwing him a smile.
The three of you form a perimeter. You meet Bucky's gaze and throw him a wink.
"What's the matter Wolf, can't take these people by yourself in your old age?"
"Funny." letting out a huff. "Why don't we just try to get out of here in one piece?"
The fight is intense. All that's heard are shots being fired, screaming and grunting. On your end, the squelch of flesh being pierced by knives. You've always preferred them to guns. The hands on method is more your style.
The noises have begun to die down as you've taken out your opposers and you hear the light crunching of leaves to your right. You throw your favorite knife out hitting them straight in the jugular. You can hear Sam whistle to your left at the action.
"All right everybody that's it. Let's head back." Steve instructs through the comms.
You head over to the body to retrieve your knife slipping it into the sheath at your belt. Sam and Bucky are both waiting for you to move out. As you're walking towards them you hear a low rustling noise and the sound of a gun cocking. You halt and move your eyes towards the sound only to find a barely alive assailant pointing it straight at Bucky.
Your heart stops. Bucky moves quick but the trigger pull is quicker. You launch yourself in front of him pulling your gun out of its holster to take a shot straight to the man's forehead.
You feel your body hit the floor as time seems to stand still. You're hit. Your mouth dropping open in shock.
"NOOOOOO!" Bucky screamed. You can hear him but he sounds so far away. Barely able to make it out through the ringing in your ears. You palm at your stomach, feeling the warm liquid seeping through your gear.
Bucky drops to his knees beside you and hoists you up against him. Putting pressure on your wound with his metal hand as your arms fall limp to your sides. He grasps your cheek with his flesh hand lifting your face to meet him. Tears staining his cheeks.
"You gotta stay with me angel, we'll fix you up but I need you to stay awake for me. Okay?" He lets out a sob.
"What the fuck were you thinking? Why would you do that?"
Your eyes are beginning to feel heavy. Trying to muster up as much energy as you can to lift your hand to him, if even weakly. You can feel blood inside your mouth. You let out a cough, and gently run your fingers on his cheek leaving bloody streaks.
"Bucky, I- I love you. I need you to know that." you rasp.
You can faintly hear his breath hitch in his throat. As he lifts you up into his arms.
"Don't do this to me. Please don't leave me." he whines pressing his forehead to yours as your eyes flutter closed.
"I can't do this without you, please sweetheart. Stay with me."
Stay with me. The muffled words were the last thing you heard as you're lifted off the ground in Bucky's arms and taken into the quinjet.
Tumblr media
A week. That's how long she's been out for. And Bucky hasn't left her side since.
They made it to a Stark Medical Facility an hour out from the base camp they infiltrated in record time. Tony called the best doctors to be at the ready to tend to her wounds. She lost a lot of blood in the field and on the way here. She practically had to be pried from Bucky's arms because he didn't want to leave her. Pacing in the waiting room the entire 6 hours that she was in surgery for. Everybody's been trying to get him to head to the safe house to sleep in a bed for a little bit but he refuses, saying he wants to be there when she wakes up.
Bucky's fine dozing off in the chair next to her bed. It's not like he sleeps much anyway. He talks to her everyday. When he isn't, he's reading her favorite book to her and braiding her hair. All the while her voice saying "I love you" replays in his mind endlessly.
He's mad at himself. Bucky fell in love with her the moment he first saw her. She's perfect. She's caring and sweet but feisty, incredibly selfless. He couldn't bring himself to say anything. Never thought himself good enough for her or deserving of her love. But God does he want her to wake up so he can say I love you back. He'll give her the world if she allows him to.
As he's finishing another chapter his eyes begin to feel heavy. He bends the corner of the page, just like she'd mark her spot, and leaves it resting on the bedside table. Laying his head on a small space next to her, he links his hand in hers and closes his eyes.
Her eyes open slowly and she stirs a little on the bed. Taking in her surroundings trying to remember anything after hearing Bucky for the last time. She looks down feeling something heavy and cold in her hand, it's familiar. She smiles seeing Bucky's parted lips and slightly furrowed brow. Always such a grump.
"Buck?" pressing in lightly on his hand. "Bucky."
Bucky's eyes flutter open and he smiles. When he realizes that she's woken up he immediately raises from his spot.
"Oh my God." he whispers as he cups her face in his hands. "You're up. Are you ok? Do you need anything? Let me call the nurse."
"Bucky calm down." she chuckles lightly wincing at the pain in her abdomen.
"I'm fine. Are you ok?"
"Me? What? I- I am now. I was so worried." tears pooling in his eyes.
"I'm ok, Buck. I'm right here."
"Please don't do that again, it'll kill me if I lose you."
"Bucky I-"
He rubs his thumb across her bottom lip. "Please just, I love you angel. I always have."
"I love you too. So are you going to kiss me now or do you need me to gaze into your eyes a little longer to hammer in the message?"
Bucky huffs out a laugh and leans further down taking her lips in his. They feel like home, it's where he's always belonged. Suddenly they hear whistles and applause. He turns his head to find the team gathered at the door.
"Well it took y'all long enough. Damn." Sam remarks.
He rests his forehead against hers and they laugh together at the intrusion. She starts running her fingers through his soft curls. Bucky leans into her touch. Finally able to rest, knowing that the love of his life is ok and in his arms.

“Hey doll, c’mere.” You look up at Bucky as he chops the onions, his lips moving to blow a strand of hair out of his face. “Yes, Buck,” you say, reaching up to tuck the hair behind his ear. “I was just gonna ask you to do that for me, thanks.” He kisses the corner of your mouth, sniffling as he continues chopping.
You finish your dinner and start cleaning up, Bucky volunteering to do the dishes tonight. You’re putting away the leftovers and you keep hearing him huff and puff, finally yelling, “god damn hair.” With a chuckle, you walk over and stand behind him, grabbing your hair tie off your wrist. You gently card your fingers through his long hair and pull it back into a neat bun.
He hums at the feeling of your fingers scraping over his scalp, “thanks, baby, that’s better.” You stand on your tippy toes and kiss his neck, going back to the leftovers. Less than a minute later, “doll, um, I need you again.” You lift your eyes, immediately zeroing in on the stray strand of hair that has fallen in front of his face.
“I gotcha baby.” You tuck it behind his ear and stuff it under his other hair, laughing when it starts to come loose again. He turns to face you, giving you a slightly nervous look before saying, “it’s gotten so long, how about I let you just chop it all off!” You stare blankly for a moment and he keeps going. “I know you love it like this, gives ya something to pull when I’m between your legs,” he says, waggling his eyebrows suggestively, “but I think I’m ready for a change.”
“Tell you what,” you say as you start to undo his bun, “I’ll cut if for you tomorrow as long as you let me get a few good pulls in tonight, before it’s gone.” His hair falls around his face as he turns off the sink. “That sounds like a win-win for me, doll.” He lifts you onto the counter and moves between your legs, whispering, “it’s time for dessert anyway.”
The next morning you wake up before Bucky and watch him as he sleeps. His face is relaxed, and his hair is flowing over the pillow. You brush some strands away from his face and run your fingers through them. He cracks an eye open and smiles. “Getting some last love in?” he asks, voice raspy with sleep. “Just enjoying the view.”
He sits up, pulling you into his chest. “Well, if you do a terrible job, I’ll just let it grow out again,” he laughs, poking your sides. “How are we gonna do this?” You tap your finger against your mouth, “hmmm, let’s have breakfast and then we can get started. I think I know how to do it!”
After enjoying your breakfast, you bring Bucky into the bathroom, taking a chair from the kitchen and sitting him in front of the sink. “You may have to scoot down a little bit, you’re tall.” He does as you ask and you place a towel on the edge of the sink and under his neck. You turn the water on and use a cup to wet his hair.
“Are you comfortable baby?” you ask as you grab the shampoo. “Yea, I’m fine, thanks doll.” Lathering some shampoo into your hands you massage your fingers over his hair and scalp, drawing a low moan from his throat. “Oh man, that feels good, y/n,” he says, eyes closing. You lean down and kiss his lips while you continue washing his hair.
Once you’ve conditioned and towel dried it you sit him up and bring the garbage can over, ready to start cutting. “How short are we going, Buck?” He looks up at you, “well, not too short, I still want something for you to grab on to.” Biting your lip, you nod, straightening his head and making the first cut. You’re quiet the whole time, your focus solely on not messing his hair up too badly. You finish up and put some product in, fluffing his hair with your hands. You close your eyes and sit in his lip, keeping them squeezed shut until he tickles your sides. “Open them silly, can’t be that bad!”
Opening your eyes, you look him over, his blue eyes shining and his hair looking soft and fluffy and hot as hell. “You’re the only guy that could go from being gorgeous with long hair to gorgeous with short hair even when I cut it!” You slip off his lap and he stands, turning to look in the mirror. “Wow, it did come good, I like it!”
He gives it a few pulls, eyes darkening as you watch his reflection in the mirror. “Still enough there for you to tug,” he says, shifting quickly and grabbing you around the waist. He backs you against the wall, brushing his lips to yours, “wanna take a shower and try it out?”

Summary; Bucky Barnes has kidnapped reader and broken her into be his perfect and obedient baby girl. Your relationship with Bucky seems to take a drastic turn when he introduces his best friend, Steve Rogers, into the relationship. Stockholm Syndrome reader, dominate Steve and Bucky, DD/LG dynamics. Filthy smut, fluff, aftercare, all of the good stuff. This fic can be read as a stand-alone or as a continuation of my fic "Bucky's Baby Girl." (which can be found linked in my master post here)
You found it hard to imagine a time not long ago when you despised and detested Bucky for taking you away from your previous life. Your university studies, your estranged family, the friends you had, the small things in life you loved. As the days began to blur together, you no longer wondered if there was anyone searching for you. Even if there were, you knew they could never find you here. Plans of escape came, faded, and never returned. It was only him. He was your new proclivity and lifeline. Who you were before he abducted you was lost to time.
Over time, Bucky had become your provider, protector, and the man you loved so desperately. His love and adoration for you were clear and expressed emphatically. He loved you more than life itself; you were his baby girl, the light of his life. You would do anything to please him, to serve him.
You had no contact with the outside world. He was the only person you had interacted with for months. He had broken you in and built you to be exactly what he wanted and needed. You couldn’t help but feel that he was the one you needed all along, too. You had grown content to live your life by his side.
He hadn’t been called into work for weeks. You were enjoying every moment you spent with him. Enjoyed his praise and craved his physical affection and attention. The thought of his body against yours filled your thoughts constantly and made your head swim. You couldn’t help it, you loved being his baby.
Bucky had extra special plans for you today. His colleagues and friends had incessantly been prying into his private life, noticing his overall change in demeanor since bringing you into his life. It seemed that no one knew the truth of what had happened, knew his darkest secrets in which you were involved.
He was already a very private person, but the ones closest to him couldn’t help but notice his further withdrawal as he spent nearly all of his time away from the outside world to attend to your needs. You were a secret, his secret. He truly wouldn’t have it any other way. You were his entirely. However, you were still his captive. No one could find out the truth. Bucky knew had to take control of the rumors that were spreading before he lost control of the narrative that there was ‘someone new’ in his life stealing his attention away.
Tony Stark was holding a large charity banquet this evening and Bucky had decided that this would be the perfect opportunity to dispel any rumors and introduce you to his colleagues and friends. Of course, he planned to keep the introductions vague, only providing enough information to dispel any thoughts of wrongdoings on his end. He had full trust in you to play into the charade, knowing how desperately you believed you needed him. He wanted to test your loyalty, reward you for it afterward.
He had left the previous day and spent the entirety of his time away buying expensive evening gowns and jewelry that he couldn’t wait to surprise you with.
He woke you up early this morning with his tongue against your most sensitive spot. Sending you crashing over the edge before you had the moment to wipe the sleep away from your eyes.
The smile on his face as he pulled you up into the bed melted your heart.
“I have something for you, doll. Cover your eyes for me.” Bucky commanded, and you followed obediently. Your heart fluttered in your chest as you sat in bed, legs crossed and your eyes shut tight. Bucky spoiled you constantly and you couldn’t wait to see what he had brought you today. You listened quietly as he slid open his wardrobe and moved around the room. He sat beside you on the bed and slowly moved your hands from your face, prompting you to open your eyes.
You couldn’t hide your shocked gasps as you took in the sight of the stunning evening dresses that were laid in front of you. One was silky black with gold embellished detailing. The other was a dark blue with a plunging neckline. You looked up at Bucky with a confused expression. These were so different from the short sheer babydoll dresses and clothing he usually dressed you in.
A smile spread across his face as he took in your shocked expression.
“We’re going out tonight, doll.” He responded softly.
Going out.
Your mind became a frenzied mess. You hadn’t left Bucky’s home since your initial arrival. The thought of leaving the home you had grown to love made your head spin.
“It’s okay, baby. You’ll be by my side the entire time.” He reassured you. Your nerves dulled as he wrapped his arms around you. You remembered a time when you would have done anything to leave, but now, the thought of being around others outside of the home left you feeling apprehensive. You nodded up at him, sucking on your bottom lip.
“C’mon, daddy’s gonna get you all dressed up.” His warm, affirming guidance further eased your nerves.
You spent the evening getting ready alongside Bucky. You had decided on the black dress. You couldn’t help but stare in wonderment at yourself as you stood in front of the mirror all made up. It was all so beautiful; you felt beautiful. The dress was low cut, clung to your body in all the right places. The heels you wore made you walk on unsteady steps, but you tried your best to stay up straight.
Bucky walked out of the bedroom to meet you in the foyer. He was stunning, dressed in a well-tailored black suit. You felt the fire in your core spread slowly as you watched his eyes darken, taking in the full sight of you.
He made his way behind you, staring at you both in the mirror's reflection that hung in the hall. His hands trailed slowly up the sides of your body, his soft touch making you melt further into him. He kissed up your neck and you could do nothing to hide the soft moans that escaped from your lips.
“You look so beautiful, princess.” Bucky’s deep groan shook through his chest against you.
You craned your neck to look up at him, whispering a breathless thank you. Your nerves were eating you up inside. In a matter of minutes, you’d both be on your way to the banquet. Stepping into the real world again.
His lips met softly against yours and you matched his careful pace. You wished he’d take you then, lead you back into the bedroom and strip your clothes from you. You knew he was thinking the same thing.
The muscles in his jaw rolled as you stood on your toes, pressing your hips against his.
“I’ll take good care of you when we get home if you behave. Promise me you’ll be a good girl.” He spoke softly. His hand wrapped lightly against your throat, trapping your gaze with his.
You nodded up at him, feeling yourself clench at the way his chest rose and fell, the way it always did when he was thinking about but fucking you into dumb subservience.
“Yes daddy, I promise I will be good.” You spoke softly, eyes batting up to him. You would be on your best behavior for him tonight.
The drive to Stark tower went by quickly. You were unable to focus on the expanse of land and cityscapes you passed through on the drive, while Bucky’s right hand traveled carelessly across your inner thigh. Teasing you relentlessly until you were begging him to reach higher. He kept his control, promising that he’d give you exactly what you wanted if you were able to be a good girl for him.
By the time you were walking into the banquet, you were a complete mess. Your arousal clouded your mind, leaving you a sopping mess. Your hands clasped desperately around Bucky’s arm. He kept you impossibly close to his side. Guiding you and leading you into the tower. You kept your eyes on the floor, feeling overwhelmed by the stares and looks from others you passed. You felt so incredibly out of place. There were too many people, it was too overwhelming. You felt as though you’d break at any moment. Every time you felt as though it was too much to handle, Bucky would squeeze you tighter and whisper sweet things into your ear, easing your nerves.
You listened as Bucky said hellos, looked up and smiled as he introduced you to his colleagues and friends. Some of them gave you strange looks, while others reached out to shake your hand and gave you warm smiles.
“So this is the girl that’s been stealing all my time away from you, Buck?” A man spoke beside you.
Bucky smirked and reached out to embrace the man. “Can you blame me, Sam? Just look at her.” Bucky’s arm wrapped proudly around your waist again.
You looked up, scanning both men’s faces as they looked at you. You felt yourself sink closer into Bucky, softening under his beaming gaze.
Sam laughed again, “Can’t understand how you pulled this one, but I’m happy for you, man. Just glad to see you happy.”
You felt your face flush at his words. The two men exchanged a few more words before Bucky led you to a table towards the back of the room. It was entirely empty, and you were thankful to be slightly out of the crowd.
Bucky sat down and pulled you into his lap. He moved your hair from your shoulder and kissed softly up your neck, whispering praise for behaving so well for him against your skin. Your chest fluttered at his words.
“When can we go home, daddy?” You asked quietly. You felt his smile widen against your skin.
“Soon, baby. There’s just one more person you have to meet.” He answered. You nodded. Only one more person, and then you could go home. Let Bucky undress you, fall asleep wrapped in his arms.
He handed you a glass of champagne that he grabbed from a server that passed by. You stared at the bubbly liquid. You hadn’t had any alcohol since Bucky took you into his home.
“Drink doll, it’s okay.” He prompted you. You smiled, bringing the glass to your lips, letting the bubbling liquid fall past your lips. You had a few more glasses and felt yourself relax further and further into him. You couldn’t help but stare in awe up at the beautiful lights in the banquet hall. Your skin was alight as Bucky’s rough hands moved gently across your body. You were lost in the moment, swaying softly to the music that played quietly around you, taking notice of Bucky’s sharp breaths as you moved your hips against his lap.
You heard a chair move beside you and turned your head hazily to meet the man who took a spot next to you and Bucky. You felt your cheeks flush as you met his eyes. He was beautifully rugged, in the same way Bucky was. He looked incredibly familiar.
You felt Bucky shift underneath you and watched him as he shook the man’s hand beside you.
“Good to see you, Steve,” Bucky spoke, tilting his head to face him. Steve, it was Steve Rogers. The man that Bucky spoke constantly about. His closest friend. You felt yourself sit up a bit straighter, trying to clear your thoughts.
Steve flashed a smile, exchanging the same words with Bucky. Steve’s eyes trailed up to scan your body until they met your eyes again. You felt your breathing grow unsteady as you watched him take you in. Feeling Bucky’s grip tighten around you.
“So, this is her?” Steve asked. You looked up at Bucky, watching him nod as a smirk spread across his lips. You felt Steve reach for your hand and your eyes turned to follow his as he brought your hand to his lips, placing a soft kiss against your skin. You couldn’t hide your whimper as you watched his expression darken up at you.
“It’s good to meet you finally,” Steve said to you, sitting back in his chair. You could only nod, turning back to face Bucky. You couldn’t understand what he meant by that. ‘finally meet you.’ Did he know who you were before this? You couldn’t bring yourself to ask.
You listened to the two men talk. They drank whiskey glass after glass. You sipped champagne slowly as the night continued. Soon your head was a fuzzy mess. You barely noticed the two men around you. You were lost in your own little world, reveling in the extravagant beauty of your surroundings.
Bucky’s hands traced light circles around your inner thigh again the way he had on the car ride. It became the only thing you could focus on as he touched you under the table. The words of the two men became a blur. It was only you and Bucky at that moment. His fingers traveled higher, brushing softly against the lace across your most sensitive spot. You whimpered, pushing yourself further into him.
“Do you want to cum, baby?” Bucky whispered quietly into your ear. You responded on instinct.
“Yes daddy, please.” You sighed into him. Your body felt impossibly light. You heard both men exhale sharply. The realization that Steve was sitting just beside you, close enough to have heard your pleading, sent your body stiff. Your face flushed with embarrassment as you looked up between Steve and Bucky.
You couldn’t help but shudder at the sight of both men staring at you, eyes darkening by the second.
“I think it’s time we go back to my place. What do you say, Steve?” Bucky’s breathing grew ragged against you. You try to hide your shock at Bucky’s words. No one had ever been at the home while you were there with him. Steve nodded in agreement and before you knew it, you were being led back to Bucky’s car with Steve beside you.
The ride home was impossibly more intense than the ride to the banquet. You sat in the passenger seat beside Bucky as Steve spread his legs across the backseat. The two passed a bottle of whiskey between them and your mind swam with the building tension between the three of you. Bucky’s hand ran its way across your body. Pulling your panties off and urging you to relax and open up to him. After being edged and teased all night, you were quickly turning into a complete mess. Catching glimpses of Steve watching you in the rearview mirror only added to the desperation you felt.
Bucky’s intensity and passion had seemed too overwhelming and overbearing on their own, but having both men’s full attention was quickly pushing you over the edge.
Once back at the home, Bucky lifted you up into his arms and led you inside through the door. Steve followed closely behind. Bucky sat down on the large living room sofa and pulled you into his lap. Steve found his spot on the opposite end, pulling another swig of whiskey from the nearly empty bottle.
Bucky’s hands slid up your body while you traced light kisses along his neck and jaw. Your mind was lost in the haze of the incessant stream of praise from Bucky.
“Stand up for us, doll,” Bucky commanded.
‘Us’
You looked over your shoulder at Steve as you stood timidly from the couch. Steve’s head was hung low, the flash of his blue eyes just barely visible in the dim lighting of the room. His gaze was burning through you. You suddenly felt nervous. Your hands flexed anxiously at your sides as you looked back at Bucky, waiting for his next command.
It was all so surreal. You had no idea what would come next, what Bucky’s plans for you were. But you trusted him nonetheless. You would do anything to please him.
Bucky stood slowly from the couch and wrapped his hands tightly around your shoulders, turning you to face Steve. His hands traced soft circles against your exposed back until they reached the zipper of your gown. Your breath hitched in your throat as he tugged down the zipper.
You looked back over your shoulder towards him, meeting his darkening gaze.
“You’re going to show Steve how good of a girl you are for me, princess.” Bucky breathed out behind you. You nodded your head, letting him slide the straps of your dress off our shoulders. The gown fell to the ground, leaving you bare for both men to see.
You looked back at Steve, feeling your face flush. He was devastatingly beautiful.
“Use your words,” Bucky commanded through labored breaths.
“Yes, daddy. I’ll be a good girl.” Your voice was barely audible, a clouded whimper.
Steve shifted in his seat, adjusting the noticeable bulge in his fitted slacks, muttering obscenities under his breath.
Your heart pounded in your chest, the blood rushing in your ears. A sudden wave of confidence spread through you with both men’s full attention.
Bucky sat back on the couch across from Steve.
“On your knees, baby,” Bucky said behind you. You fell to your knees in an instant, looking over your shoulder back at him. You watched as he pulled the tie from his neck and undid the buckle of his belt. He slowly popped the buttons of his shirt, exposing his toned chest. You feel yourself clench desperately at the sight of him like this.
“Crawl to me,” Bucky commanded. His chest rose and fell in uneven breaths. You immediately followed his orders, dropping onto your hands and crawling slowly towards him. Your backside now bare and in full view to Steve. Your movements were torturously slow, arching your back further with each movement forward. Playing the game just as Bucky loved.
You settled yourself between his spread thighs. He wrapped his rough fingers around your throat and pulled you into a desperate kiss. He tasted like whiskey, the warmth of his breath spreading across your lips. You were already losing yourself in his touch.
He whispered in your hair, “you’re gonna be a good slut and let me fuck that pretty mouth of yours."
You nodded, a wickedly innocent smile spreading across your lips, “yes, daddy.”
You settled your hands on his thighs. He pulled his slacks down, letting his cock fall up to his stomach. Your eyes drank in the sight of him. You needed to be closer. Needed to please him, be his good girl. You immediately reached for his cock, lightly rubbing his precum down the length of him.
He was already throbbing under your touch. You could feel your own arousal slick and dripping down your inner thighs. You moved your hand up and down him, bringing your lips softly to the head of his cock. You let your spit gather on your tongue before taking him in your mouth. He wrapped his hands tightly around your hair and snapped his hips up into your throat, a loud groan escaping from his chest. You gagged, sputtering around him.
His rhythm was quick and consuming. You tried your hardest to relax your throat as much as you could, desperate to take more of him. He slid down the tightest part of your throat. The tears welled in your eyes as he pushed your lips to reach the base of his thick cock.
“Fuck...” He moaned out. You looked up as he threw his head back and you smiled around his cock, pride, and devotion spreading through you. As he moved your head up and down at a maddening pace, you heard another buckle loosen and zipper slide. Your cheeks warmed as you thought of Steve watching behind you. Bucky lifted your head and turned it toward Steve. The heat inside of you spread as you watched Steve rubbing his hardening cock over his boxers.
“Look at what you do to us. You’re so fucking beautiful, doll.” Bucky’s praise made you clench hopelessly. The sudden need to please both of the men is all that filled your thoughts. You couldn’t help but watch Steve, drunk with his own lust. It was overwhelming, overpowering. So many thoughts seemed to race through your mind. Questions, curiosity, wonderment. All pushed to the side with the sudden certainty and clarity of the importance of this all.
“I told you she was even more perfect in person,” Bucky spoke over you to Steve, a smirk sliding up the corners of his perfect lips. His eyes glinted with newfound pride and adornment. Bucky’s words bounced around your mind. He had told Steve about you? Your confusion was clouded with the blinding lust building inside of you.
You couldn’t begin to explain it if you tried. But at this moment, everything felt complete. With both men here, it felt as though a gap you had been oblivious to before was now filled.
Bucky promptly brought your mouth back to his cock. Your lips parted, gagging on the full length of him, pushing harshly against the back of your throat. Your saliva and tears slid down your face and neck. Both men spoke in ragged and mumbled praise and compliments. You were a sopping and shaking mess.
“You should see how fucking perfect she looks with my cock buried in her stomach,” Bucky spoke to Steve. You heard Steve groan behind you. Your heart pounded at Bucky’s words. Bucky promptly stood, pulling you up with him. He turned you so that you were now facing Steve. You locked eyes with him, unable to look away.
Bucky gently adjusted you onto all fours on the couch. He pushed your shoulders down, keeping your back arched downwards and your hips up towards him.
Bucky found his place behind you and you couldn’t help but whimper with anticipation as he brushed his cock through your slick folds, teasing against your clit.
He stepped back, adjusting his position. He kept one leg on the floor beside you, his other knee rested on the couch beside you. His hands grabbed your hips tightly. He lowered his head, and he began planting sloppy kisses against your clit, slowly swiping his tongue around your cunt.
Your moans spilled desperately out of you. You were on fire, burning up from within, pressure building by the second. You watched Steve pull his cock from his boxers, pushing them down his thighs. The sight of him fully exposed made your mouth water. You felt yourself throb at the intensity and pleasure that was quickly consuming you.
You were drawing closer to the edge.
“Daddy... I’m gonna cum. Please let me cum, daddy.” You begged, tears sliding down your face. You could feel Bucky’s smile widen against you.
He pulled away, and you whined at the sudden loss of contact.
“Not yet, princess. I’ll tell you when you can cum.” Bucky replied. He spit on your cunt, raising his hand before slapping it down to leave a stinging smack across your ass. You cried out, feeling your entire body tremble at the impact.
Bucky pushed your stomach further into the sofa, wrapping his other hand tightly around your hair. He pulled your head up to face Steve. Your whole body flushed as you watched Steve stroke his large cock at the sight of you being used and defiled like this. You should feel ashamed, disgraced, but the men’s combined praise and encouragement worked to make you melt completely into the moment.
You felt as Bucky lined himself behind you and you held your breath as he started slowly pushing into your drenched cunt.
You couldn’t stop the cries and whimpers that spilled from your lips as Bucky slid deeper inside of you. Quickly bottoming out, giving you just a few moments to adjust around him before hastily picking up his pace. Both men’s loud moans filled the room, drowning out the sound of your own pleasured cries. You watched through glazed eyes as Steve’s pace became wild and uneven as he worked his own cock. The sight of it combined with Bucky’s relentless pace nearly sent you crashing over the edge.
Bucky fell back onto the couch, pulling you to straddle him. Your back was arched against his chest, your chest and face now fully facing Steve on the opposite end of the sofa. You wished he were closer.
The new positions only pushed Bucky deeper inside of you. He held your wrists down at your sides as he drove upward, fucking relentlessly against your spasming walls.
You were a babbling, incoherent mess. Bucky’s hand wrapped around your waist, his fingers drawing quick circles against your clit. His other hand wrapped against your throat, holding your face in place to meet Steve’s wild gaze.
The pressure inside of you was quickly consuming you. Your eyes rolled back into your head as your toes curled underneath you.
“Please can I cum, Daddy? I need to cum, please, please.” You plead through broken sobs.
Bucky instantly stilled his movements, moving his fingers away from your clit. You whined, trying to roll your hips, but he only held you tighter, restricting your movements. You tried your hardest to hold it all together.
“Not yet, doll. Be a good girl, you have to be patient.” Bucky commanded through gritted teeth. His chest rose and fell sharply behind you. You nodded your head. Your vision spun as you struggled to gain control of your breathing against his tightening grasp around your throat.
Your eyes were glazed over, trying your hardest to focus on Steve. His large hand still wrapped tightly around his cock at the sight of you completely coming undone.
“How close are you, Steve?” Bucky asked roughly behind you, rocking his hips slightly up, drawing breathless moans from your lips.
“So fucking close, Buck,” Steve answered. The muscles in his jaw rolled as his breathing grew increasingly labored.
Bucky let out a low laugh. The vibrations coursed through you.
“C’mere,” Bucky motioned for his friend to stand. “You’re going to show Steve how well you can use those pretty lips,” Bucky whispered in your ear.
Your eyes widened at his words. Your thoughts raced at the idea of having both men inside of you. It was an idea that was incomprehensible to you before, but it now was the only thing in the world you craved. Serving both of them together.
Your heart pounded in your chest as you watched Steve move from his position on the sofa. He walked slowly towards you, carefully unbuttoning his shirt, pulling his tie from around his neck. The anticipation flooded your nerves.
You would do absolutely anything for these two men at this moment.
Steve stood in front of you, his hard cock just in front of your face. You instinctually reached up to take him in your hands. The sound of both men’s moans vibrated through you. You looked up at Steve, moving your hands slowly, just how Bucky had taught you to do. You looked up at him, meeting his eyes. Steve’s hands carefully wrapped around your hair, pulling your lips to the head of his cock.
“So fucking beautiful,” Steve muttered out as your lips wrapped around him. Bucky grasped your hips tightly and began rocking back up into you. His hand around your neck slid down to rub circles into your clit.
“Go on, doll, Steve’ll play nice with you.” Bucky’s words of encouragement urged your mouth to slide further down Steve’s throbbing cock.
Steve pushed your head slowly towards him until he reached the back of your throat. His hips moved in an uneven and ragged pace as his breathing and moans increased in intensity.
Bucky’s grip on you tightened as his movements became harsh and sloppy underneath you.
You were seeing stars, moaning and gagging around Steve as Bucky worked himself inside of you.
You could tell both men were close as well, feeling them twitch and throb inside of you. You pulled back, gasping for air.
“Please, please, can I cum? I can’t... Please...” You begged through broken breaths. You were melting into both men. Desperate for them to grant you release.
“Cum baby,” Steve commanded above you, pushing himself past your lips again.
“Fuck, cum for us, doll,” Bucky replied, biting gently into your shoulder.
Their words were enough to send you crashing over the edge. You felt your body convulse and shudder around them. Your checks hallowed harshly around Steve’s cock as you clenched around Bucky’s cock buried deep inside of you. You felt yourself gush down your legs, spilling over Bucky’s thighs.
Your ears rang as your vision grew spotted and black. The sound of your cries and the two men’s praise were lost in the ecstatic pleasure of your release.
Within moments you felt Steve’s cock stutter and pulse inside of you, felt his warm cum paint the back of your throat. His load was overwhelmingly large and left you choking for air as you swallowed it down. Steve dropped to his knees in front of you, catching you in his arms as you fell forward towards him, unable to support your own weight in your current state. Wave after wave of pleasure coursed through you as Bucky continued to fuck you through your own high.
Bucky’s movements grew increasingly wild as he fell apart as well.
“Daddy’s gonna cum in your perfect little cunt, princess.” Bucky moaned out behind you.
Seconds later, you felt Bucky twitch and throb inside of you, felt his cum paint the inside of your walls.
The three of you stayed there for a moment longer, trying to steady your racing hearts. Steve pushed himself up off the ground and fell into the sofa beside you.
Bucky carefully lifted you off of him and laid back further on the sofa. Steve pulled your head to rest in his lap as Bucky draped your shaking legs against his thighs. Your mind was a mess of emotions. Comfort and pleasure and peace.
Bucky bent one of your legs up against his chest as Steve ran his fingers gently through your hair. You reveled in the serene moment of perfect silence.
Bucky’s fingers brushed through your abused folds, and you whined at the overstimulation. He slipped a single finger inside of you, pushing his cum deeper inside of you. Your back arched up against the two men as Bucky worked carefully and slowly inside of you. You shuddered around him, crying out at the pressure.
“Mm, too sensitive, daddy.” You whined.
Bucky smirked, letting out a low laugh. He pulled his finger out of you and brought it up to your lips. You opened for him, letting him slide his finger across your tongue. You sighed into the taste of him. A smile spreading across your lips.
You looked up at the men above you. Feeling your heart swell at the sight of them both. Adoration and admiration played plainly across their faces.
You could only vaguely feel Bucky lift you in his arms, carry you into his bedroom, clean you up and settle you in the bed, your mind still clouded with ecstatic exhaustion. Both Steve and Bucky crawled into bed with you. The bed shifted with the weight of them finding their place beside you. Bucky laid on his side, pulling you tightly against his chest. Steve laid on his back, rubbing lazy circles through your hair and over the expanse of your arms. His calloused fingers moved carefully across your sensitive skin. Nothing had ever felt so entirely right, complete, than it had at this moment. Your heart was full, beating softly in your chest.
“Did I do a good job, daddy?” You asked, nuzzling closer into Bucky’s chest. Your eyes flutter closed, heavy with sleep. You were entirely spent. Perfectly used. The ache in your body slowly numbed as both men worked to comfort you.
“So good, doll, you did such a good job for us,” Bucky mumbled against your hair.
You looked up at Steve, desperate to hear praise from them both.
Steve looked down at you and gave you a wide smile before leaning over to plant a kiss on your forehead.
“You were perfect, angel.” His voice was ragged and gruff with content exhaustion.
Your smile widened. You melted into them both, drifting off into a perfect sleep.

Warnings: Violence, bad language words, and some angst.
A/N: This was updated on 18th Sept 2020 to include a little more action at the beginning and a bit of creative license as to how the fight between Steve and Buck on the helicarrier went down, with the addition of Katie being there. Originally I deleted this part, but I found it...and thought it was actually pretty good...so here it is.

"HYDRA doesn't like leaks," Sitwell continued to talk and try to plead his case as they drove down the freeway, heading back towards the Triskellion.
"So why don't you try sticking a cork in it," Sam finally snapped.
"Insight's launching in sixteen hours, we're cutting it a little bit close here," Nat said sticking her head between the two front seats from where she was sat in the middle seat next to Sitwell, Katie on her other side behind Steve's seat.
"We can use him to bypass the DNA scans…” Steve said, clearly having already thought it through. “That way we can access the Helicarriers directly, "What?! Are you crazy?! That is a terrible, terrible idea-" Sitwell began to protest but was cut off, his screams dying as he was pulled out of the car and thrown into oncoming traffic just as a sixteen-wheeler was going past. Katie let out a scream as Sam yelled “Shit” and there was a shot fired, a bullet ripping into the seat where Katie had been sat seconds before, Natasha pulling her to the side.
"Move!" Natasha yelled at Steve as she clambered through the middle of the two seat and onto his lap pulling him down away from the next bullet which was meant for him. Steve pulled on the handbrake and the person on the roof dropped down onto the street.  All 4 of them in the car watched as he rolled and rolled and used his metal arm to slow his momentum before standing up. He was tall, well built, long dark hair whipping around his masked face.
“It’s him…” Natasha said, her voice almost a whisper, “The Winter Soldier.”
Katie aimed her gun through the windscreen, taking aim, when they were violently hit from behind causing Katie’s usual dead shot to ricochet off the side of the man’s arm instead of his head. The car behind pushed them closer and closer to him until he was able to leap back onto the roof, as Nat searched for her gun and Katie aimed hers upwards. Suddenly, a metal hand smashed through the windshield and pulled out the steering wheel from Sam’s hand.
"Shit!" Sam yelled again.  Natasha, after having found her gun, started shooting at him but the Winter Soldier jumped onto the jeep behind their car that had started erratically pushing theirs along the road.
“Katie…!” Steve yelled, gesturing for me to climb into the front. "Hang on!”
She scrambled over the central gap between the front seats as Steve broke open the door with his shield pushed up against it, holding onto them all as best he could as the car began to flip. They dropped from the car onto the door as well as the shield and slid roughly along the street. Sam lost his grip and slipped away but luckily he only tumbled a few metres away mostly unharmed.
The three of them that remained hanging onto the shield quickly stood once they had come to a complete stop, the jeep that had caused the crash stopping as well, men all fully armed climbing out and one of them handing the Winter Soldier a grenade launcher, which he immediately used. Steve pushed Katie and Natasha out of the way and took the full force of the grenade with his shield which sent him flying over the bridge, just as the Winter Soldier reloaded and began firing at the rest of them.
They quickly dove for cover behind a car and together moved along the bridge, car by car, Natasha and Katie shooting back at the soldiers with their hand guns. Katie tossed one of my spare pistols to Sam who caught it, and started firing as well. This was working at keeping them at bay reasonably well, until they were forced to the edge of the bridge and the Winter Soldier shot another grenade at them.
There was nothing for it, they had to jump. Nat had her anchor so she leapt off, grabbing Katie’s hand as she shot up at the concrete of the bridge. They landed a bit heavier than normal, Katie rolling a few feet over the contract but she was soon back on her feet and running behind Natasha under the bridge.  Nat skidded to a halt as they reached the other end, the shadow of the Winter Soldier visible on the ground in front of them. They shared a quick glance and with a nod they split up, Katie veering left, Natasha veering right. With a deep breath, Katie stepped out from the shelter of the bridge, took aim and shot her gun up at the Soldier and she saw his head jerk back, and then he removed his glasses. She had hit where she had aimed but it hadn’t done as much damage as she had hoped.
Ducking back under the bridge she carried on running and at this point she could hear machine gun firing and paused as she turned to see the fire trained onto a bus. Steve emerged from the end of it, rolling and picking up his shield and adding to the fray, Sam was firing at hostiles as well from his vantage point above.
“Go, I got this…”He yelled and Steve set off running once more.
Katie turned and looked across the way, the Winter Soldier was stalking between cars, presumably looking for them. She shadowed him, remaining a good distance away, as he rolled something under a car. Next thing she knew, there was an explosion and Nat had vaulted onto his back, attempting to tackle him that way. Katie sprinted towards her, and then slid across the floor, kicking at the back of his knee, making him stumble slightly but nothing more. She jumped up just as he flipped Natasha over onto her back and aimed a shot at him causing him to leap off somewhere to his right. Katie spun round, her gun aimed ready, looking for him but he was nowhere to be seen.
She started to sprint over towards Natasha, yelling at the screaming members of the public to get out of the way as she went, when she felt a searing pain in her shoulder. She gave a scream of pain, stumbled, and dropped to her knees putting a hand to the wound someone had just shot clean through. She backed up against a car, breathing hard looking around again when a thump from behind her had her turning to see that the Winter Soldier had hopped onto the hood of the car behind the one she was leaning on, gun aimed straight at her head.
Steve had heard that scream and he spun round to see Katie was pressed up against a car, her hand up against her left shoulder, her eyes fearful. As he turned to sprint towards her, the the Winter Soldier hopped up onto the car behind, taking aim with his gun Steve launched his shield with a loud grunt and  It knocked the metal armed man off the car, but with practiced ease the assassin landed on his feet and made to shoot again but Steve was right there, on him, launching a knee to his chest. The Winter Soldier stumbled slightly, before he cocked his head to one side, threw his gun away and advanced on Steve. The two began to fight, furiously, Steve blocking the swipes the assassin took at him with a dagger, slamming him into cars with his shield.
Toe to toe they went, the fight was furious. Each landing blows which would under normal circumstances dispatched an opponent but here, they were pretty equally matched. The man was just as strong as Steve and The Captain realised that he had to be enhanced.
As the fight was raging between the two men, Natasha reached Katie’s side and dropped to her knees, ripping off her jacket and covered the wound with it in an attempt to stem the blood flow. "Alright, c'mon." She said wrapping her arm over her shoulders. "Get up."
She helped Katie to her feet, and the injured woman looked back in time to see the Winter Soldier launch himself at Steve. Steve managed to grab him under his chin, propelling him straight over the top of him in a huge arc, causing his mask to clatter to the ground right before the dark haired man landed gracefully on his feet. Steve stood up, waiting to see the face of the man who was causing them so much goddamned trouble, but when the guy turned round, he felt his heart stop.
Katie frowned as she watched as Steve stood stock still, staring at the now unmasked Winter Soldier who looked oddly familiar. It took her a moment but then she realised, he was familiar because she’d seen him in photos. His hair was longer, and he looked a little more ragged round the edges, but it was him.
Steve took a deep breath, his heart stopping as he looked into the man’s grey eyes.
“Bucky?” he gasped, frowning.
“Who the hell’s Bucky?” the man said. Steve paused, it sounded like him. It looked like him. It was him, but in the same way it wasn’t. What had Hydra done? The Soldier seemed to be thinking about something, before he shook his head slightly and aimed at Steve with his last remaining gun, but before he could shoot Sam swooped down, his wings once again attached to his back, and kicked him away but he didn’t stay down for long.
Katie looked around, and noticed that there was an RPG on the floor, she nodded towards it and Natasha picked it up, and aimed a well fired grenade over Steve’s head, forcing him to duck. It exploded where the Winter Soldier had stood, bringing the fight to an end.
Steve turned and looked and Katie slumped against the van, struggling to stay on her feet. It was then that black vans and jeeps surrounded them, and the former STRIKE teams piled out.
"Drop the Shield, Captain! Get down on your knees! Get on your knees! Now! Get down! Get down!" Rumlow shouted out the orders. Steve did as he was told and placed his shield on the ground while holding his hands up defensively, not once taking his eyes off Katie, as she screamed in pain as a hand sharply grabbed her shoulder, pressing down on the injury. She was hauled forwards, stumbling, her hands roughly snapped in cuffs in front of her.
Steve started to struggle but a gun was pressed into the back of his head causing him to stop. He didn’t listen to what they were saying, he was too busy trying to make sure Katie was ok, and then there was Bucky. As he stood up and was shoved forward, he was directed towards an SUV, followed by Nat and Sam. He turned to see Katie fall as she was shoved forwards before being wrenched roughly back to her feet by Rumlow who grabbed her arm harshly and grinned as he leant down, his mouth inches from her ear.
“Of all the times I dreamed of getting you in handcuffs…” he said, loud enough for Steve to here. The soldier let out a growl in his throat as Katie bared her teeth at Rumlow.
“Fuck you.” she spat.
“Oh darling, if only…”
“I warned you what would happen if you touched my girl again…” Steve snarled as with a huge wrench he snapped the cuffs that were pinning his arms behind his back and kicked out at the soldier that was stood at the side of the SUV. He advanced towards Rumlow. who almost lazily pulled a pistol from his belt and held the barrel against Katie’s head.
“One more move Rogers and I’ll blow her pretty little head off.”
Steve stopped dead, swallowing, his eyes blazing as he looked at Katie, her face was contorted in pain from the shot in her shoulder. She fixed her eyes on his, and he took a deep breath and looked back at Rumlow.
“In the van...”  Rumlow instructed.
And Steve knew he had no choice. With a last look at his girl he turned, bowing his head slightly. Once inside a pair of masked agents shoved him down, one giving him a harsh dig to his stomach, knocking the wind out of him as they clamped his feet in strong shackles to the side of the van, clamping his hands together in equally strong restraints in his lap.
Rumlow just laughed and threw Katie into the SUV, unceremoniously. She staggered to a seat as the doors swung shut behind them, the van starting and beginning to move only moments later.
Steve’s heart was in his mouth as he saw the extent to which his girl was hurt, the left side of her denim jacket was soaked with blood. She lay her head back against the seat and took a deep breath letting out a moan. It hurt. A lot.
“Katie…” Steve he said, making sure his voice was calm “Come on, talk to me, sweetheart.”
“You know…” she said, opening one eye. “I’m going to get one of my childhood friends shoot you, see how you like it…”
Steve took a deep breath, glad she was still able to make jokes, but also comforted by the fact she’d recognised Bucky too, and he wasn’t going totally crazy.
“Childhood friend?” Sam asked “You mean that dude, Robocop? You know him?”
“Bucky…” Katie whispered, looking at Sam “Steve’s Riley…”
“He was my best friend. One of the Commandos.” Steve said softly, looking at his feet.
“What?”  Natasha questioned. “It can’t be…”
"It was him," Steve said "And he looked right at me like he didn't even know me."
"How is that even possible?" Sam asked in disbelief. "That was like, seventy years ago."
"Zola," Steve immediately answered. "Bucky's unit was captured back in 43'. Zola experimented on him. Whatever he did helped Bucky survive the fall. They must have found him and..."
"None of that's your fault, Steve," Katie said gently as she grit her teeth through the pain in her shoulder. She was starting to feel a little light headed.
"Even when I had nothing, I had Bucky."
He heard Katie taking a deep breath through her nose, and suddenly he was jerked back to the here and now. She needed help.
"We need a doctor here," Sam’s voice sounded out, beating him to it as she rest her head back against the seat. She was starting to feel really sleepy. Really sleepy.
“I think I need to sleep…” she muttered, softly and Steve instantly leaned forward, speaking in his Captain’s voice in a hope it would jerk her out of it.
“Stay awake. Eyes on me, doll”
"If we don't put pressure on that wound, she's gonna bleed out here in the truck...” Sam cut off and Steve turned to see why, watching with an open mouth when he saw the guard on the left whip out an electric rod, before flipping it and electrocuting the other guard before kicking and knocking them unconscious.
"That thing was squeezing my brain," Maria Hill complained as she pried the helmet off.
“Nice of you to show up…” Katie groaned, “We only called you like what, 12 hours ago…”
“Who's this guy?" Hill asked, ignoring Katie and nodding to Sam.
"Sam Wilson." Steve quickly introduced him, happy to see a friendly face. "Sam this is Maria. She's on our side." He added and Sam nods accepting Steve's word as Hill took out a set of keys and began to unlock their restraints.
Steve was by Katie’s side as soon as he was free. Her arms were released and she moved, crying out in pain.
“It’s ok…” he said as the truck stopped. “We’ll get you fixed up honey, I promise.”
"We gotta' get moving, Cap." Hill said, moving to the middle of the van. “Stand back”
What the device was he had no idea, but he didn’t care. It lazered through the SUV floor with ease and he turned to see Katie had now passed out. Giving a groan of frustration, he gently picked her up, and Maria dropped herself out of the SUV, then Natasha, then Sam who Steve passed his girl to gently. Once he was out, they rolled to the side, dodged down an alley and into another waiting SUV. Sam gently placed Katie on one of the seats, Hill passing Steve a spare jacket so that he could place it over the wound, applying pressure.
“Lay her flat…” Sam said, as the SUV sped forward “it’ll help stop the flow…”
With Sam’s help they managed to manoeuvre Katie so she was lay with her head on Steve’s lap. She murmured something and with his spare hand he gently carded his fingers through her hair.
“We’re not far out Cap.” Maria said, looking at him “Bout 20 mins or so. I’ll call ahead to medical, make sure they’re prepped”
He nodded and leaned back, lost in his thoughts. Bucky, Katie, Bucky, Katie… like a mantra it kept repeating in his head. Sam and Natasha were busy asking Maria questions, and he vaguely caught her answers-there was a secret SHIELD base outside town, no Hydra didn’t know, yes she was sure, yes she knew about insight and yes it needed to be stopped.
After what felt like the longest 20 minutes of Steve’s life they drew up to a stop outside what looked like a huge dam of sorts built into the side of a hill, and Steve stood up, easily picking Katie up into his arms, following Maria’s direction. They entered the large concrete doors into a brightly lit corridor and Maria shouted to someone who was running towards them dressed in a white coat.
"GSW. She's lost at least a pint!" Maria was shouting.
"Maybe two," Sam added.
He felt Katie stir in his arms and he glanced down to see her blinking, her eyes screwed against the light.
“Where…” she grimaced slightly at the pain both in her head and her shoulder. Fuck, she had no idea where she was or what had happened, other than she had clearly passed out.
“We’re safe.” Steve said, pressing his lips to her forehead, relieved to hear her voice even if she did sound like she was in agony.
"Let me take her," the doctor called out.
“No,” Steve said firmly, his grip on Katie tightening slightly “Show me where to put her.”
"They’ll want to see him first" Maria said to the doctor who nodded and gestured for Steve to follow him.
“Who?” Katie asked, blinking.
No one answered and they were led to a room at the back of the facility where Hill pushed aside the plastic divider to where a very much alive Nick Fury was sat up in a bed.
Steve felt his mouth drop open as Fury remarked. "About damn time."
The doctor came in behind them and gestured for Steve to place Katie into a seat so he could start working on her wound. He did so gently, his hand sliding into her hair once more as he placed a kiss onto the crown of her head, not moving far from her, his hand gently resting on her good shoulder.
“This is gonna sting a bit Miss Stark…” the doctor said, and she nodded, hissing as he injected the local into the wound, and her spare hand reached up to grip Steve’s.
“You ok?” he crouched down and she turned to look at him.
“Marvellous.” she said, sarcastically “This is the best day of my life.”
He chuckled, as long as she was being snarky she was ok. “You’ll be fine, won’t she doc?”
The doctor nodded. “I know it doesn’t feel like it but this is quite superficial.” he held up the bullet he had removed. “It hasn’t gone in too deep. You’ve just lost a fair bit of blood but I’m not too concerned, unlike him”
He gestured at Fury and Katie turned to look at him as Steve stood up doing the same.
"Lacerated spinal column, cracked sternum, shattered collarbone, perforated liver, and one hell of a headache." Fury spoke.
"Don't forget your collapsed lung," The doctor added.
"Let's not forget that," Fury chuckled. "Otherwise, I'm good."
"They cut you open," Natasha spoke to Fury. Her voice not accusing but hurt, "Your heart stopped."
"Tetrodotoxin B. Slows the pulse to one beat a minute. Banner developed it for stress. Didn't work so great for him, but we found a use for it." Fury replied
“Ok you’re done.” The doctor said and Steve turned back to see Katie who was now plugged up to a bag of blood. “Bit of rest and I’ll check your levels later.”
“Thanks…” she said, turning back to Fury.
"Any attempt on the Director's life had to look successful," Hill informed Steve eyed her, remembering how defeated she had looked at the hospital when they announced Fury's 'death'. Either she hadn't known at the time, or she was a damn good actor.
"Can't kill you if you're already dead. Besides, I wasn't sure who to trust," the Director admitted.
*******
"This man declined the Nobel Peace Prize. He said peace wasn't an achievement, it was a responsibility," Fury scoffed while throwing a picture of Alexander Pierce to the middle of the table they were all sat round once they had all finished telling each other what had happened at the various stages of the day. "See, it’s stuff like this that gives me trust issues."
"We have to stop the launch," declared Steve.
"I don't think the Council's accepting my calls anymore." Fury added with a huff of a laugh, even though there was nothing funny about the situation at all.
“Ok so what do we do?” Katie cut in, “How do we stop it?”
Hill glanced at Fury before she leaned forward in her seat to grab the case which had been sitting on the table. She clicked the locks, opened up the top and spun it round to show them what was inside- 3 equally sized chips with similar designs of code etched into them.
"Once the helicarriers reach 3,000 feet, they'll triangulate with Insight satellites, becoming fully weaponized," Agent Hill explained, opening up a laptop. She turned it around to allow them to see a simulated concept video of what she was saying. "We need to breach those carriers and replace their targeting blades with our own. One or two won't cut it. We need to link all three carriers for this to work, because if even one of those ships remains operational, a whole lot of people are gonna die."
"We have to assume everyone aboard those carriers is Hydra. We have to get past them, insert these server blades. And maybe, just maybe we can salvage what's left-" Fury started but he was cut off by Steve who harshly interrupted.
"We're not salvaging anything.” He said shaking his head slowly, and he meant it. “We're not just taking down the carriers, Nick. We're taking down SHIELD"
"SHIELD had nothing to do with this." Fury tried to defend his organization but there was a derisive snort which cut him short. Everyone turned in the direction from which it had been issued.
“Sorry, did I do that out loud?” Katie said, sitting up slightly.
“You gave me this mission.” Steve said, turning back to Nick, shaking his head “This is how it ends. SHIELD's been compromised. You said so yourself. Hydra grew right under your nose and nobody noticed."
"Why do you think we're meeting in this cave? I noticed," Fury said waving around him as if it was somehow enough.
"How many paid the price before you did?" Steve snapped, voice still hard, as his mind turned to Bucky.
"Look, I didn't know about Barnes." Fury sighed sitting back in his seat.
"Even if you had, would you have told me? Or would you have compartmentalised that, too?” Steve’s tone was icy. He knew the director hadn’t been involved in whatever Hydra had done but he couldn’t help but feel angry. He took a deep breath and when he spoke again his voice was softer but still as stern “SHIELD, Hydra…” he shook his head gently “it all goes."
"He's right," Hill finally spoke, sadness tinged her voice.
Director Fury looked at every single person in the room. He made specific eye contact with Katie who raised her eyebrows, defiantly. Natasha didn’t react at all, which in itself was enough. Then finally he looked to Sam, clearly curious as to what he thought about the whole thing.
"Don't look at me. I do what he does, just slower," Sam vouched. Steve couldn’t help but smirk slightly.
"Well..." Fury leaned back and let out a sigh as he looked Steve in the eye. "It looks like you're giving the orders now, Captain."
Whilst Steve was glad, he took no pleasure in what they were about to do. SHIELD along with Katie had been his anchor after waking up and bringing the security agency to its knees made him quite sad, especially after Peggy, Howard and Chester had been its founders. Nevertheless it was the right thing to do and for the next few hours they sat discussing and eventually had the bones of a plan in which each person had a different role to play. Natasha would be posing as one of the World Security Council members, using a Photostatic Veil to bypass the security measures, joined by Fury. And, as Hill had somehow retrieved Katie’s Nova suit from her car (Katie didn’t even bother asking how) her, Steve and Sam would be the ones going from helicarrier to helicarrier with the chips and switching out the old ones with the new ones. Maria would be on the ground, making sure all was going to plan.
“We’re going to have to come up with another way to disable the encryption.” Nat said, looking at Fury as he took a sip from a bottle of water. “Pierce will have erased all of your clearance from the Triskelion system”
“Not all of it.” Hill said with a wry smile
“What do you mean?” Katie frowned, taking the chocolate bar Steve handed to her with a smile. The doctor was happy with her blood levels but told her to keep her sugar and energy levels high, as such, Steve was ensuring she ate enough by consistently passing her snacks from the pile that Hill had dumped in the middle of the table for everyone to munch on until pizzas arrived.
Fury looked at her, then to Hill, before he reached up and flipped up his eyepatch revealing his badly scarred right eye.
“I build safety switches into most things these days.” He said dryly. “There’s a scan of this eye hidden on an old database, a seemingly un-active one from the 90s... “
“So if we can access that database remotely, we can pull that scan across onto the active one and bingo.” Katie grinned, swallowing her bite of the Snickers.
“We don’t have the capacity to do that from here.” Natasha sighed,
“No, but JARVIS can" Katie said
“Alright.” Steve said, drawing himself up to full height “We only have..." he checked the clock on the wall. "6 hours until the launch." Steve nodded at the people who were watching him from their spots at the table. "Everyone, I suggest we get to it.”
There was a flurry of movement accompanied with the scraping of chairs as people pushed themselves away from the table, ready to put their wheels of the plan into motion.
****
“Hey JARVIS…” Katie said as she accessed the AI on one of the laptops
“Miss Stark…” JARVIS greeted.
“I got another favour to ask. I need access to SHIELD's old clearance scans from 1995. We're talking the high-ups, the OG's."
"Dare I ask why?" and Katie rolled her eyes at his response. Fucking Tony.
"Because." she answered simply in the hope it would stop him from questioning her. It did.
“It might take me a little while.”
“Fast as you can J.” she said, “We’re up against it here.”
“Are you sure you don’t want me to contact Mr Stark?” he asked
“No, I don’t”
It took 30 minutes. Thanking JARVIS, Katie started to scroll through the database to get the name she wanted. She quickly scanned the information. The database was full of former SHIELD security clearances. Some had moved on to other places - CIA, FBI, etc. Others had to get new clearances when they moved up in the world of SHIELD, few had just simply died and left their clearances behind.
The one she was looking for was still alive, although HYDRA and Pierce thought otherwise. Fury had hidden an alternative retina scan under the name Carol Danvers. She had no idea if that was a significant name to him or just something random, but she didn’t really care. She pulled the access pass and sent it to the main database so they could use it when they got to the Triskelion without going through the backway again.
Taking a deep breath before standing up, she glanced down at the laptop before closing it and heading off to find Steve.
The soldier was outside, desperate for some fresh air, lost in his thoughts. He should have gone back for Bucky. He survived the fall, but Steve had left him. Left him to the clutches of HYDRA, who had brainwashed him into becoming their assassin. He ran his hand over his face and leaned against the railing, watching as the first tendrils of daylight broke over the horizon.
As always he was aware of her presence before she spoke, so he wasn’t surprised when she asked if he was ok, and turned to face her, letting out a sight.
“Not really…” he said, honest to a fault.
“You know, this is the right thing to do…” she said, as she slid between him and the barricade of the bridge so that her lower back was pressed against the rails.
“I know.” both his hands dropped to her hips. “I really wish you’d sit this one out”
“I can’t sit it out Steve. You know that.” she said “this is personal for me too. Besides, you need me.”
He understood. And there was no point trying to make her stay behind, she was probably the only person on the planet that could rival him for stubbornness. And she was right, they did need her.
“He’s going to be there.” Katie said gently, breaking the silence.
“I know.”
“Whoever he used to be, the guy he is now… I don’t think he’s the kind you can save, Steve. He’s the kind we need to stop.”
“I have to try” Steve said, eventually looking at her, pleading with her to understand “I can’t just give up on him.
She did understand, she understood perfectly well, and could only imagine what he was feeling at seeing his best friend, the man he had known all through his childhood, manipulated in such a way.
"We can never give up on those we care about, we can only try our best." she said.  “Just...remember that he's not the same person he was seventy years ago."
He raised his eyebrows up slightly.
"Neither am I." he responded matter of factly. She held eye contact with him for a moment, but she knew there was no point in trying to convince him otherwise; Bucky was his best friend. He loved him and wasn't about to let Hydra take him away again and eventually she gave a soft smile.
“I know.” she said gently, just before he pressed his lips to hers. She kissed him back, eagerly, the kiss grew deeper and his hands crept from her hips up to her hair, pulling her closer as he pressed against her, trapping her completely against the barrier.
Eventually, reluctantly, he pulled away laying his forehead against hers
“I love you.” he said softly
“I love you too.” she replied
He looked over her shoulder at the rising sun and took a slight step back. “Tell the rest of ‘em to suit up, it’s time.”
In the meantime, he had his own suit to get. One which he’d been wearing the last time he took those fuckers down. And he was hoping, albeit probably in vain, that if he did encounter the Winter Soldier, it would jolt Buck’s memory about who he was.
“You gonna wear that?” she said, gesturing to his chinos and jacket, her eyebrow raised.
Steve looked at her with a smirk. "If you're gonna' win a war, you've gotta wear a uniform. He dropped a kiss to her head and took off at a run.
Katie smiled as she watched him knowing exactly where he was going.
*****
“Comms on 6…” Hill said as Steve, Sam and Katie jumped down from the SUV on the side of the Potomac to the Triskelion, not far from where the control operations were. Katie was holding the case that contained her suit in her right hand. She’d confessed to Sam that she’d only flown in it a few times, but Sam wasn’t too concerned and neither was Steve. Sam had promised to fly with her in tandem, and Steve trusted the man completely despite only having known him a number of days.
“Rogers, Hill…” Fury spoke in their ears “I’ll open ours as soon as it is safe to do so…” he paused. “Good luck.” They silently and quickly made their way down the side of the Potomac. The first task was to disrupt the comms and security surrounding the Launch Bunker so that no one would know they were arriving. A simple EMP did that.
And then, just as Steve was about to kick the door in to the main room, it opened.
The techy on the other side simply stared as he was confronted with the 4 of them. His eyes flickered first to Steve, then to the Katie and Mara who had their guns trained on him.
"Excuse us," Steve shot the tech a pointed look. He immediately held his hands up and stepped aside to let them enter with a nervous, slightly scared look on his face.
They stepped inside, looking around at the remaining 8 or so people in the bunker, all of whom immediately raised their hands.
“You got exactly 10 seconds to get the hell outta here…” Sam said, looking around. They didn’t need telling twice, several of them tripping over in their scramble to the door.
“Bit dramatic don’t you think?” Katie teased, as Sam shrugged, a grin spreading across his face as she dropped her case to the floor. Steve gently pushed past her towards the desk.
“Which one is it?” Steve was looking for the coms button which would project his voice around the Triskellion. Maria pointed to one of the buttons and mics on the desk in front of her, where she was sat, tapping at the computer.
Steve looked at Katie and licked his lips, somewhat nervously. He had given speeches before, but none like this.
“If there’s anyone that can make people understand it’s you.” Katie encouraged, and he nodded, taking a deep breath, before pushing the button, his voice suddenly amplifying as it filled every speaker in the building.
"Attention, all SHIELD agents. This is Steve Rogers. You've heard a lot about me over the last few days, some of you were even ordered to hunt me down. But I think it's time you know the truth. SHIELD is not what we thought it was, it's been taken over by Hydra. Alexander Pierce is their leader. The STRIKE and Insight crew are Hydra as well. I don't know how many more, but I know they're in the building. They could be standing right next to you. They almost have what they want: absolute control. They shot Nick Fury and it won't end there.” he took a pause before he continued “If you launch those Helicarriers today, Hydra will be able to kill anyone that stands in their way, unless we stop them. I know I'm asking a lot, but the price of freedom is high, it always has been, and it's a price I'm willing to pay. And if I'm the only one, then so be it. But I'm willing to bet I'm not,"
He finished and took a deep breath as Katie smiled at him and Sam looked up.
"Did you write that down first, or was it off the top of your head?" he quipped.
Steve looked at him, trying to keep his face straight, before he turned to Maria who smiled, nodding at the screen.
“Alright, I’m in…” she said, before reaching into the briefcase and handing each of them one of the new targeting chips. “Get in, switch them over, get out.”
They all nodded and Katie bent over, pressing her fingers onto the security pad on the case containing her suit. As it sprang open she stepped forward, the metal pieces connecting and flowing over her body, the dark navy and gold suit forming around her before the face plate slid down.
“That’s the coolest thing I’ve ever seen…” Sam muttered, and Steve smiled. He’d only seen her in it once before when she had been running a test flight. Katie turned to Sam and although he couldn’t see her face, Steve knew from her tone she was grinning.
“You aint seen nothing yet Sammy…”
The three of them made their way around the banks of the river towards the triskelion, Sam and Steve running, Katie flying behind them at a low height. Suddenly, feeling the vibrations under his feet Steve skidded to a halt, Sam doing the same. Katie landed behind them, and looked down.
“What’s that?” she asked as the floor vibrated below them, retracting her face plate. ”JARVIS, gimme a scan…”
“Below the Potomac river is a hangar…” JARVIS said, his voice sounding in Steve’s ear too.  “And it looks like the doors are activated.” No sooner had he finished than Maria’s voice came over the comms "They're initiating the launch"
“Clearly your speech rattled them enough to bring it forward…” Katie said as the 3 of them headed to where the ground was opening and the Hellicarriers were launching.
“Hey Cap, how do we know the good guys from the bad guys?" Sam questioned as he ran.
"If they're shooting at you they're bad." Steve answered. Sam extended his wings and flew off after the highest Hellicarrier, while Steve jumped down onto the launching bay beginning to fight, Katie flying behind him, doing her best to clear out as many agents as she could
"Hey, Cap, I found those bad guys you were talking about," Sam suddenly reported.
"You alright?" Katie asked.
"Not dead yet," Sam answered
Together Katie and Steve fought their way across the bay, clearing as much of a path for Steve as possible, before Katie spiralled through the air and up towards the one she had been designated. Dodging fire easily as she went thanks to JARVIS’ evasion techniques, she landed with a clang on the deck.
“I’m in…” she said, before a barrage of bullets ricoched off her back. She turned, cocked my head to one side before she smirked.
“Hi fellas…” she said, firing up her repulsor beams and sending them their way, before shooting upwards once more towards the central control column.
"Falcon, status?" Maria demanded.
"Engaging," Sam reported, before a moment later "Alright, I'm in…oh,shit!” he cursed.
"Eight minutes," Maria warned
"Working on it," Steve’s reply was punctuated by a grunt.
When Katie’s carrier was clear, which didn’t take too long, there were nowhere near as many agents on this than there was on the other, she landed by the control panel and stepped out of her suit, chip in hand. Punching in the code Maria had given them, she swapped out the targeting disk and grinned as he pushed everything back into place.
"Alpha locked," she reported, stepping back into my suit.
"Falcon, where are you now?" Maria asked anxiously.
"I had to take a detour!" Sam’s voice was loud. Katie took off, bursting through one of the glass windows of the Alpha carrier to see Sam spiralling through the air, being shot at by Hydra missiles. She surged forward, shooting randomly, turning their attention to her as she twirled down towards the glass dome surrounding the next helicarrier before at the last moment going into a vertical climb upwards, meaning the beams hit the glass creating an entrance for Sam.
“Oh, honey you fly better than me!" Sam happily exclaimed and Katie chuckled as he dropped into the hole. A moment or two later he spoke again “Bravo locked," and he shot back out into the bright sky.
"Alright, that's two down. How's it coming, Cap?" Maria questioned
"Still working on it!" Steve repeated. And he was. He had no idea how he managed to end up on the damned carrier with the most agents on it but they just kept coming and coming, like a never ending swarm of ants. He kicked out, taking another one down with a huge roundhouse kick and felt a bite of frustration as Hill urged him on.
"Better step it up Cap." she said, then there was the sound of 2 gun shots before she spoke again “6 minutes”
It was then that Steve realised he was blocked in. Agents behind him and a quinjet was aiming at him from ahead. He had no alternative but to dive off the edge of the hellicarrier.
"Hey, Sam, Sweetheart…I'm gonna need a ride," Steve said easily as he fell through the air.
"Roger! Let me know when you're ready!" Sam answered easily.
"I just did!" he said, his voice remarkably calm for a man who was currently freefalling at a fast pace. Suddenly his arms were tugging upwards, and he was deposited back on the tarmac, Sam landing besides him.
"You know, you're a lot heavier than you look," Sam grunted and Katie laughed, firing at an agent that was left before she dropped down with a clang.
"Yeah, well, I had a big breakfast." Steve responded cheekily.
Sam was about to respond when suddenly a blur of black and silver flew out from behind a crate and tackled Steve off the edge of the helicarrier.
“Steve!” Katie yelled, immediately launching to go after him but something grabbed at her foot, crunching down.
“Right thruster is compromised…” JARVIS said, as whatever had gripped her suddenly let go and she looped in the air, trying to gain her balance with only one thruster. As she spun to look at her assailant she caught a glimpse of a metal arm grabbing at Sam’s wings, throwing him backwards.
Sam managed to stop his backwards momentum and started to shoot at him in response. Katie joined in with her repulsors and one of the weapon guns from her shoulder, the two of them forcing the Winter Solider to retreat.
“Steve…” she yelled into her comms, flying off the side unsteadily with the one boot working “JARVIS run scan…” “Captain Rogers is there by the port side…” he said, and to her relief she saw his heat signature pulling himself up at the side of the carrier. She turned, expecting to see Sam behind her but instead she saw the Winter Soldier charging forward and kicking him off the Helicarrier. Sam began to plummet, one of his wings not working so Katie dove after him, grabbed his arm and managed to land the pair of them, albeit rather un gracefully, on the roof of the Triskelion.
“Thanks…” he mumbled dusting himself off as Katie retracted my face plate
"Steve, are you okay?" Katie asked earnestly.
"I'm alright. I'm still on the helicarrier." Steve responded. "Where are you?"
“Triskellion roof.” She spoke.
"I'm grounded, the suit's down. Sorry, Cap." Sam sighed.
“Katie?”
“One of my thrusters is out.” she sighed, “I’m running on half capacity…but I can get up to you if I need to.”
"It’s okay, I've got it." Steve said “I’ll call if I need you.”
“Half capacity?” Sam looked at her.
“Have to channel double the power to the non-fucked boot!” she shrugged, holding it up “Or I fall…means everything else gets compromised.” “Huh…” “Tony’s working on it…” she muttered as they looked up at the 3 hellicarriers, her eyes falling on the one Steve was currently on. “He’s gonna come face to face with him…”
“Yeah…” Sam sighed “Maybe he can make him remember who he was.” “You don’t believe that any more than I do.”  Katie observed, glancing at the Sam. He shrugged.
"Falcon, Nova…" Hill called through the comms.
"Yeah?" Katie paused, talking as she still remained with her eyes locked on Sam’s.
"Rumlow's headed for the council."
"I’m on it." Sam responded, unzipping his vest and nodding to Katie. “You stay here, he might need you.”
“Roger, oh and Sam…” she called after him. He turned to her, jogging backward “Give Rumlow a kick in the balls for me, really hard.” Sam saluted, grinning, before he turned on his heels.
“Steve…”  Katie spoke in her coms, getting nothing but static.
“I can’t reach him.” Hill said, “And Charlie is still not locked. We're running out of time."
"I'm on it." Katie responded, taking off in the direction of the carrier.
“40% power… “ JARVIS instructed.
“Thanks J, can you run a heat scan, locate Captain Rogers…”
“Located… he is in the central area, near the control room…” JARVIS said, showing her the thermal image of 2 men going toe to toe, her stomach sinking. She surged forwards and flew through the glass of the control room just as Steve and the Winter Soldier fell over the edge of the platform they were fighting on.
They both landed hard but The Winter Soldier got up first, standing over Steve, metal arm gearing up to deliver another blow, but as he went to connect with Steve's face Katie blasted at him, landing in between him and Steve, sending him sprawling backwards.
“Katie…” Steve said, getting to his feet.
“Get to the control panel.” she yelled as the Winter Soldier came charging back at her “We don’t have much time…” As the metal armed assassin lunged at her she shot upwards, flipping in the air and sailing behind him, firing at his back. He flew forward but jumped immediately to his feet and fired his gun at her, the bullets bouncing off her suit. They continued this twisted dance until she got a little too close, and his metal arm gripped tight around her left gauntlet, the squeal of metal on metal rang out as he began to crush down with his fingers.
“Shit…” Katie mumbled, “JARVIS… full power.” “But Miss Stark…”
“Do it!” She fired the suped-up repulsor beams and it caused the winter soldier to fall hard backwards. As she wound up for another shot, she had just sent it his way only to see him pick up Steve’s shield using it to block her ray. It rebounded it straight at her, hitting the suit square in the chest and sending her straight through the glass windows of the carrier into the sky.
It took her a while to right herself, but eventually she flew back inside just as the solider stabbed Steve in the shoulder. Steve yelled, and head butted the man three times, which forced him to let go. As Steve turned to pull the knife from his shoulder Bucky made a grab for the targeting chip and Katie fired at him again, knocking him into one of the metal beams at the back of the carrier, his head making a horrible noise as it connected before he fell face down. Steve wasted no chance in grabbing the discarded chip and heading up to the control panel as she stood between him and the Winter Soldier.
“Systems are seriously compromised…” JARVIS told her. “If you continue using your repulsors the way you are, I fear you won’t have enough power to make it down…” “We’ll worry about that later J.” she said, as she looked up watching Steve
"One minute." Maria Hill spoke and she had barely finished when Katie heard the sound of a gunshot. She turned to see The Winter Soldier getting to his feet looking dazed but his metal arm held his gun aimed up at the control panel where Steve was still climbing. Clearly he was still out of it enough to miss, even a second time as another gunshot went off and Steve let out a yell, gripping at his thigh.
"Thirty seconds!" Maria said urgently.
As the assassin position himself and steady his gun taking aim, Katie flew forward, knocking into him just as he fired. The Winter Soldier landed on his back before Katie stood over him, one foot on his chest, in a last ditch attempt to buy Steve a bit more time. He grabbed at the leg of her suit, pulling it from under her and she crashed to the floor, the man’s metal armed rained blow after blow down on her suit, the glass eye holes cracking.
“Suit integrity is at 50% and falling…”JARVIS said and she did the only thing she could do. She fired her thruster causing her to shoot out from under his hold, colliding with a steel piece of the structure which send her ricocheting out of the side of the hellicarrier.
"Charlie locked." she heard Steve's strained voice as she continued to fall through the air, struggling to fire her boot back up again.
"Okay, get out of there." Maria spoke as Katie continued to plummet, JARVIS also speaking to her saying he was trying to stabilise her tumbling.
"Fire now." Steve demanded.
“NO!” Katie yelled as he boot suddenly kicked to life about 12 foot above the Potomac. She could hear Maria trying to argue too. But Steve wasn’t having any of it.
"Do it now." Steve yelled.
Maria’s sigh was heavy on the comms link but she did as she was told pushing the button that started the helicarriers firing at one another. The ships began to tear each other apart and as more shots hit the one that they were on the inside began to break apart.
“Steve… STEVE!” Katie yelled hovering unsteadily, only being able to use the one thruster. She instructed Jarvis to channel more power into it to keep her upright and then Sam’s frantic voice sounded in her ear.
"Please tell me there's someone in the air!"
"Sam! Where are you?" Nat’s voice sounded and Katie took a deep breath.
"Forty first floor!" He yelled as he got closer to the window. "Northwest corner!"
"Stay where you are!" Nat instructed as Katie swooped up to find him.
"Not an option!"
Her scanners picked him up and Katie spotted the helicopter Fury was flying a few floors below where it was supposed to be. She flew as fast as she could to grab Sam as he jumped out of the window of the collapsing building, catching him and tossing him into the helicopter flying in herself.
"Forty first floor!" Sam yelled as Katie retracted her helmet "Forty first!"
"It's not like they put the floor numbers on the outside of the building!" Fury yelled back.
"Hill, where's Steve?" Natasha asked. "You got a location on Rogers?"
“He was on Charlie…” Katie said, looking over, swallowing. “That’s the one that hit the building…”
*****
On the carrier Steve had tried to make him remember, just one final time, remember who he was. It didn’t work. The man with Bucky’s face tackled him to the floor and he landed on his back against a fallen bar, head dangling off the edge. He was anchored by the assassin’s legs around his waist and the tight hold of his uniform with his flesh hand. The man looked at him, hatred etched in every line on his face and it broke Steve's heart. What had HYDRA done to him to make him this way? They had turned his friend, his brother, against him and there was nothing he could do but try and remind him of his life before. And then came the blows from the metal arm, raining down on his face.
With every punch that landed, along with the agony, memories flashed across Steve's line of sight – some of them to do with Bucky, bailing him out of a fight in an alley behind a movie theatre. Punch. A Thanksgiving with the Barnes family. Punch. Games of cards in the army camp. Punch. But the ones that came more vividly were of his girl. The way her face scrunched up when she laughed. Punch. The black dress she wore on their first date. Punch. The way they lay tangled in one another after making love, her hand threading through his hair. Punch. The way she looked at him when she thought he wasn't paying attention - like he was the best thing that ever happened to her.
He loved her. He loved her so much it hurt.
"You're my mission!" Bucky screamed out. Steve’s vision was blurry, his face was throbbing in pain; he was beaten, he knew that. But he just wanted Bucky to know how much he meant to him.
"Then finish it." Steve gasped out, pausing in an effort to get his breath back, "Cause I'm with you, till the end of the line."
He could've sworn he saw something in the man’s face shift. His eyes became wider, like he was panicking at the phrase. The metal fist was raised up high, but didn't move from its position. His chest rose and fell rapidly as his eyes softened, just slightly, and the metal arm lowered out of the wind-up. But before he could do anything else, a massive piece of steel from the helicarrier broke off. It crashed against the beam that Steve was up against. And then he was falling, as Bucky managed to hang on to the beam with his metal arm, a sick, twisted reversal of the incident seventy years ago when Steve had watched as Bucky fell into the snowy canyon below.
He plunged into the icy water of the Potomac, the light gradually growing darker, and darker as he sank further into the depth. It was a peaceful way to die, he supposed, after the brutality of the fight. And as his vision went, the last thing he saw was his girl’s face and the fact he was leaving her behind broke him just that little bit more.
I love you Doll, I love you.
*****
Katie engaged her helmet again and took off from the helicopter, flying alongside it for a short while as it circled the outside of the hellicarrier.
“JARVIS, you got anything?” she said, surging forward, but as she spoke her scanners locked onto Steve, where he was lay on the floor of the carrier, the Winter Soldier raining blows upon blows down at him, and he wasn't fighting back.
“What have we got left in the tank?” she asked desperately.
“25% power.”
“Should be enough…” she said, spiralling upwards towards them “Put everything we have into my thrusters.”
“Miss Stark…”
“Just do it…” she yelled.
She felt the power surge as she shot upwards but as she went, her scanners trained on them both, Steve she was hit by something falling from above and was sent crashing down through the floor of the carrier and then her repulsors cut out.
“Emergency back-up power…” JARVIS spoke as her suit fired up again, giving her just enough time to level out before she went head first into the Potomac. She weaved her way through the falling debris under the surface avoiding it before she shot upwards again, but there was no sign of Steve or the Winter Soldier.
“Miss Stark you need to land…”
“Yeah I know…” she said her voice cracking slightly “But I have to find Steve…”
In desperation she circled around the river, “Any sign?” she asked into the coms.
“Nothing.” Hill said “His suit doesn’t have a tracker…”
“Come on…” she mumbled, hovering in mid-air, her suit stuttering slightly. “JARVIS hit the scans again.”
“Running…” he muttered and she watched before the display locked onto him. He was quarter of a mile or so out from the Triskellion…and the Winter Soldier was pulling him out of the water onto the river bank.
With her last bit of remaining power she flew to them, landing behind the Winter Soldier. He immediately spun round but this time Katie saw fear in his eyes. They weren’t steely or dead like they had been before, instead they sparkled with emotion. For that reason she took a deep breath and stepped out of her suit, hands held up in a conciliatory manner.
“Bucky…” she spoke gently, glancing behind him to where Steve lay motionless on the bank. She bit back the panic in her throat at the site of him hurt and unconscious before she focussed on the man in front of her.
“Who are you?” his voice was deep and he looked at her. This was good, he wasn’t attacking. Taking a shaky breath she took one step forward and he instantly grew defensive and she stopped, shaking her head.
“It’s ok, my name’s Katie…I’m Steve’s girlfriend. You know Steve, right?”
His chest heaved, his eyes widened and for a split second she thought he was going to come towards her. Instead he stood to the side letting her get a full view of her man before nodding towards her.
"Get help." He said to her gruffly before turning and running.
“I’ve got him…” Katie spoke into her coms as she scrambled over to Steve, stumbling as she ran “South West bank, clearing in the trees…look for the sign…”
At that she shouted to JARVIS  “Supernova Protocol…” before she dropped to her knees next to Steve, hearing her suit shoot upwards before it exploded with a bang. Her heart stopped for a second as she looked down at her man, letting out a sob as she noticed his chest was rising and falling slowly, the only sign he was alive. His face was badly beaten, his right eye almost completely closed. There was the knife wound on his shoulder, several deep cuts to his face, but it was the gunshot wound to the middle of his abdomen that worried her most. It was bleeding heavily. She pressed one hand to the wound to stem, her other stroking his battered face…
*****
Steve realised he wasn’t dead. He felt like it, god the pain, but there was a familiar voice, a familiar touch, one heavy on his abdomen, the other stroking his sore, battered face.
“Shh…its’ ok” she said. It was her. He tried to speak but she shushed him, “Baby I’m here.”
“Katie…” he opened his eyes, looking at her, those beautiful green eyes, and he realised he wasn’t ready to go. He didn’t want to go, not when she was here. The thought of leaving her behind, when they had so much to look forward to, a future, made him start to panic.
“You’re going to be fine…” she said. He believed her, but man he was so tired, and the pain. His eyes shut.
******
Katie sat back, hand still pressed to the wound and looked across the Potomac. Pieces of the helicarrier were still falling, splashing into the river. She had no idea how long she waited, it can’t have actually been that long, but it felt like ages as she simply sat, hand clamped over Steve’s abdomen, listening to the sirens ringing loud through the air as emergency responders got closer. In an odd way, it was all proof they had won. But at what cost?
She heard footsteps behind her and instantly wheeled to see Fury stood barking orders to 4 men following him with a stretcher, but she couldn’t really hear him. She stood up, moved back, in somewhat of a daze, to allow them access to Steve but once he was loaded onto the gurney she moved back to his side, taking his hand.
They emerged from the bank, and another medic made to drop a blanket round her, but she shrugged him off, her hand still round Steve’s until she had to let go as they loaded him into the ambulance which was parked in the clearing near the chopper.
“He’s gonna be fine…” Sam said as he appeared besides her, dropping an arm round her shoulders as she watched them anchor the stretcher in place. The paramedic inside the ambulance gestured to her, and she climbed in without so much as a glance back.

A Sticky Situation
Summary: Bucky needs your help after an unfortunate run-in with Peter Parker.
Bucky x Reader. FLUFF. Word count: 1.2k
TW: none
A/N: This one’s nothing too romantic or anything, just something fun! Hope you like it!
Tumblr media
“I swear I’m gonna break that kid in half!” yelled Bucky as he barged into your room unannounced. You had been laying on your bed reading and Bucky’s sudden appearance startled you, causing you to drop your book on your face.
“Ow! Ugh. Who are you breaking in half? And why?” Bucky didn’t need to answer your question once you removed the book from your face and saw him.
“Oh. Peter got you. That doesn’t look like the normal web goo he uses though,” Bucky was covered in synthetic webbing from the left side of his head all the way down to the star on his metal arm.
“It’s not. Parker tried making some new stuff with the tech in Tony’s lab and this shit is way stickier. He said he got me ‘by accident’ but that’s bullshit. As soon as I get this crap off I’m getting even. Speaking of getting this stuff off, I was hoping you could help? It’s mostly in my hair and I figured you might have something that would wash it out,”
“Okay, just have a seat and let me see what we’re dealing with,” you instructed as you motioned toward your desk chair. Bucky sat down, and once you saw how much of the webbing had gotten into his hair you had a horrible feeling that the only way to remove it would be to cut it out. That was going to be the last resort though.
“Did you try washing it out with shampoo?” you asked.
“Do you seriously think that wasn’t the first thing I tried? Of course I tried shampoo, and it didn’t even touch it. Please tell me you have something else,” he pleaded. At that, you ran to your bathroom and came back with an armful of various bottles.
“Okay, we’ll try rubbing alcohol first. Tilt your head back—I don’t want to accidentally get this in your eyes,” Bucky did as you asked, and with one hand you slowly poured the alcohol onto his hair while you used your other hand to hold a towel underneath so it wouldn’t drip onto the floor. Once his hair was soaked with the alcohol, you tried running a comb through it.
“Anything?” asked Bucky.
“Umm…no. I’m gonna try putting some coconut oil on it. Maybe if we grease it up it’ll just slip out,” You scooped some oil out of the jar and slathered it in Bucky’s hair to no avail.
“The oil isn’t working either, is it?” Bucky asked with a hint of dread in his voice.
“No, but I still have ideas. Don’t give up hope yet,” You started pouring liquid onto Bucky’s hair, and when the smell hit him he coughed.
“Geez, Y/N, what the hell is that stuff?” he asked.
“Nail polish remover. It’s not working though. I have another idea—I’ll be right back,” you said as you ran out of the room. You returned several minutes later with a bucket, some rubber gloves, and a paintbrush.
“Is that paint thinner?!” Bucky asked with worry.
“Yeah. Honestly it’s the last thing I can think of. I got the brush because I don’t want to pour it on your head—I’m not sure if this stuff can hurt your skin or not, so I’m gonna just brush some onto a little piece of hair and we’ll see if it works,” you explained.
“And if it doesn’t work?”
“I cut Steve’s hair all the time. Clint’s and Bruce’s too. Tony’s really the only one who insists on going to an actual barber,” Bucky cringed at the suggestion of cutting his hair.
“How did you learn to cut hair?” he asked.
“Well someone had to cut Steve’s hair while he was sleeping, so Fury had me do it. I’d never done it before then, so Steve looked a little goofy for the first year or so after I joined SHIELD, but I got better with practice. I think there are pictures somewhere…” you said with a giggle, remembering the hack job you did on Steve’s hair the first time you tried cutting it.
“Okay, well, let’s just try the paint thinner first,” said Bucky. You began brushing it on and it did absolutely nothing.
“Umm, Bucky?”
“I’m getting a haircut today, aren’t I?” he asked, knowing the answer. You both stood up and Bucky followed you into the bathroom. First, you rinsed his hair in the sink to wash out the chemicals. You dragged the chair into the bathroom and had Bucky sit down once again, facing away from the mirror.
You started with scissors so you could get the webbing cut out and then even out the length, then you moved on to clippers to clean it up a little bit. You were able to peel the dried webbing off of his skin and the metal of his arm, and you ran a comb through Bucky’s hair one last time before having him stand up and turn to face the mirror. Bucky’s jaw dropped when he saw his reflection. Not only had you cut out all of the webbing, you had styled it just like he used to back in the forties.
Tumblr media
“Y/N! You’re amazing! Damn, I haven’t looked like this in decades. It’s great! Thanks, doll!” he said as he wrapped his arms around you, trapping you in a big bear hug.
“You’re welcome, Buck. I’m just glad you like it! I tried my best to do it like it was in that picture of you and Steve that he keeps on his fridge. The one of you guys at Coney Island right before you left for the war,”
“Well I love it, but I have a spider to kill now, so I’ll be seeing you later,” said Bucky before planting a quick kiss on your cheek and running out of the room.
“Don’t hurt the little bugger too badly! Remember he’s just a kid!” you hollered as you started sweeping up the hair on the floor.
An hour later, after you had finished cleaning up and had returned to your book, there was a quiet knock on your door.
“Come in!” you yelled as you sat up and closed your book. When the door opened, Peter walked in, followed by a grinning Bucky. Peter’s head was covered in webbing.
“I figured that I probably wasn’t the only one who could use a haircut today, isn’t that right, Peter?” asked Bucky.
“Yes, Sergeant Barnes. Y/N, could you please cut this stuff out of my hair? It’s way too sticky—it actually clogged up the new web shooters Mr. Stark made for me. Needless to say, I’m just gonna go back to the old stuff,” said Peter. You nodded and motioned toward the bathroom as Bucky carried in the chair.
Once you cut out all of the webbing, there wasn’t a lot of hair left for you to work with. You ended up giving Peter a look that was barely longer than a buzz cut. He sighed when he saw himself in the mirror.
“Sorry kid, there really wasn’t much I could do. It’ll grow back though, and I assume you learned your lesson about shooting webs at people’s heads,” you explained.
“Yeah—I learned not to play pranks on cranky old men! Thanks for the help, Y/N!” yelled Peter as he ran out of the room.

One Last Embrace | ꜱᴛᴜᴄᴋʏ
Tumblr media
Pairing; Stucky (40's) Word Count; 1.0k Warnings; hurt/no comfort, major character death, graphic description of blood and injury, swearing, petnames A/N; in my defence, this is not how I planned this entry... but it's where it went. I was inspired by this. I'm gonna go cry now.
WHUMPTOBER MASTERLIST
The colours of fire that scorched through Bucky’s veins did nothing to burn away the image of home - where he so desperately wanted to be. Steve was calling to him, and he’d be damned if he kept him waiting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The sounds of the forest played like a muted symphony in his ears while they trekked back 'home'. It was meant to be an easy shot, and their mission was simple; clear out a bunker and interrogate whoever was left breathing, learn at any cost where Schmidt had gone, and then get back to camp.
Camp was their home away from home and more often than not, the lot of them returned satisfied from painting the earth crimson with Hydra’s blood.
Bucky’s gun had been a comfortable and familiar weight in his hands, the satisfying click of the bolt and the resistance of the trigger when he squeezed it to end another life entangled in the inky tentacles of those that captured him, experimented on him, gave no small sense of satisfaction.
He was a damn good shot, after all.
So how in the hell did this happen?
Amongst the firefight, Bucky had watched on from his perch in the trees while Dernier lured a convoy of Hydra soldiers from their marching lines with a mix of shrapnel and acrid smoke bombs. It had been pure chaos. Shots were being fired left right and centre while the splatter of blood, both enemy and ally, over crisp snow created some sort of fucked up canvas. If it weren’t so macabre, it would have been beautiful.
Steve, whose new stature was still an unbelievable feat to Bucky, was down in the pit of boulders and snow to go toe to toe and hand to hand with the woefully unprepared lackeys. His shield; the blue, white, and red, never ceased motion - banging to and fro between the still standing soldiers and bouncing back off of trees, only to reach Steve and start the brutal cycle once again, and again, and again.
It felt ironic, though, just how quickly the blooming red stain had spread over Bucky’s middle and across his shirt when the shield bore no blood.
There was no cycle of violence, there was no starting anew; there was just blood. And it was everywhere.
The stray bullet from the battle had pierced his left side and it burned with a fever pitch of pain that should have made him delirious. Whatever Zola had injected him with must have affected his sanity because the pain, while somewhat dulled, would have been enough to drive any normal man to the brink of madness. Hell, he didn’t know how he was still breathing, let alone walking.
For once, Bucky had been relieved that Steve seemed so swept up in their victory to notice his pallor and grimace of pain, or how Bucky positioned his rifle so his midsection was covered by the scope and trigger block.
He just had to get back to camp. It wasn’t far. He could hold on.
He had to hold on.
With a fierce determination blazing through his slowly weakening muscles, Bucky plastered a victorious grin on his face before he marched behind the others.
He had to hold on. For Steve.
Colours began to dull as they made ground, but Bucky continued to push, and push, and push. In a cruel - however expected - twist of fate, the trek back proved to be more than he could handle, and the ground began to swim before his very eyes.
“Goddammit,” Bucky muttered quietly, the corrosive feeling of dread crawled through his veins like ice and it burned worse than anything Zola had done to him in that damned lab. The hand covertly covering the scope of his gun came away from his shirt bloodied and covered in grime, the sight alone made him stumble on his feet and hit the trunk of an aged tree.
“Buck?” No- “What’s going on?” Heavy footfalls approached quickly and it was all Bucky could do to brace himself against the now bloodied trunk of the tree. “Not like you to not rush ahead and be first to wa-”
The sudden silence was deafening and Bucky looked up from his hand and into Steve’s face. Only then did Steve register just how close Bucky was to knocking on death’s door.
“What the hell happened!” Steve boomed, his mouth turning slack as he forced Bucky’s rifle away from his middle, his hands flying to staunch the bleeding but there was too much, it was everywhere. “Bucky!”
“Hurts,” Bucky slurred. It was turning black. There was a strange tingling sensation in his hands and feet and he was cold - cold like he was strapped to the table with tubes and wires attached like a second skin to his own. “Ste-” his world lurched on its axis and Bucky could feel the leaf strewn ground under his clammy hands before he registered that he had fallen to the forest floor.
The gun fell and lay abandoned at Bucky’s side, the wooden grain painted crimson like the snow below the fallen soldiers.
“Whoa!” Steve rushed, and he sounded just as scared as Bucky felt. His voice was strangled, the normal steady hands of the Soldier gave way to Steve’s tell-tale shake. “No, no, I need you to- Buck, I need you to get up for me,” the sound of his knees hitting the earth by Bucky’s head was nothing compared to how desperate he sounded. Bucky wanted to do as Steve asked, but he couldn’t.
“Bucky, sweetheart,” Steve begged, his hands now coming to pull at Bucky’s shoulders. “I need you to stand up, please.”
“‘M fine, doll,” Bucky slurred when his vision swam again. It was so dark and cold, and Steve was so warm. He needed warmth. “Need,” he tried while he weakly pulled at the blood stained fabric of Steve’s pants.
“Okay, okay,” Steve reassured as he scooted closer, pulling Bucky into his chest. “I’ve got you, stay with me.”
Bucky tried to hold on to Steve against the wave of darkness that was threatening to consume him, but it was warm there - he could see the fire escape in their apartment back in Brooklyn where Steve sat, sketching the skyline and sunset with the colours of fire.
Bucky wanted to go back home. He wanted to go back to where the fire would consume him whole in the form of Steve Rogers, whom he had loved since they were kids.
Warmth. Bucky wanted warmth.
One last embrace, Bucky thought serenely. A small smile of relief growing on his now chalk white face as his vision clouded and turned dark. One last embrace.

The jet wasn’t fully fuelled so they couldn’t fly at full speed, meaning it took them a few hours to reach the wide, flat, snow-covered landscape of Siberia. Once they touched down Steve cut the power and Katie stood up and moved to the back of the jet, opening the closet that held the Avenger’s weapons. Bucky stepped over and started examining the rack of guns labelled 'Romanoff' before he selected a light machine gun.
Katie reached over to grab 2 9mms and twirled them in her hands before she slotted them into the holders on her thighs. Bucky watched her through the corner of his eye and raised an eyebrow as she reached over to select another larger rifle.
“Sure you can handle that thing, sweetheart?” he asked, his tone was gently teasing and Katie snorted, whilst behind her Steve gave a chuckle.
“Stop flirting with my wife, Buck and I’ll have you know she’s a trained sniper, give you a run for your money.” he said, almost proudly as he slung his shield onto his back.
“That so?” Bucky asked, his mouth twisting into a grin. Katie simply smiled in response and cocked the gun, looking down the sight to check it was all clear.
The 3 of them stood together, Katie in the middle of the 2 super soldiers, waiting for the exit ramp to descend as Steve tossed his helmet in his hand.
“You remember that time we had to ride back from Rockaway Beach in the back of that freezer truck?” Steve said suddenly, looking over at Bucky as the cold air hit them.
“Was that the time we used our train money to buy hot dogs?”  Bucky frowned
“You blew three bucks trying to win a stuffed bear for a redhead” Steve smirked.
“Right, what was her name again?” Bucky asked, a tone of amusement on his voice
“Dolores” Steve answered instantly, smirk still on his face “You called her Dot.”
“She's gotta be a hundred years old right now.” Bucky said.
“So are we pal” Steve said, clamping his hand on Bucky’s shoulder. The ramp was now almost completely down. Steve placed his helmet on, fastened the strap under his chin and the three of them descended.
“Well it aint quite a freezer truck.” Katie mused.
“I hate the cold.” Bucky sighed as they trudged through the snow.
“Yeah Stevie isn’t exactly a fan either.” Katie said “Although he still runs the Air Con at like minus 20”
“No, I don’t.” Steve sighed, as Bucky gave a bark of a laugh as the two of them began to playfully bicker.
“Our bedroom is freezing.”
“Look, I run at a higher temperature than you.” Steve shot back, looking at her “Yeah yeah.” Katie rolled her eyes, gun still raised as she looked around.
“Our place was always cold in the winter.” Bucky mused, and then he laughed again “Hey Katie, once when we were kids  we built a fire using all this spare and wood we found in the outhouse.” “Yeah, your dad gave us a whack each round the back of the head as he’d been saving it to build a table.” Steve grinned again. “My ears were ringing for days.”
Katie smiled as the two men shared a laugh, it was nice to see them caught up in memories. But their reminiscing was short lived as they had reached the entrance to the bunker. Bucky turned round, just to make sure no one was behind them as Katie looked at the large, steel door set into the rock. It was open.
Bucky and Katie both raised their guns towards the gap.
“He can't have been here more than a few hours” Steve said as they stopped just outside,
“Long enough to wake them up.” Bucky sighed.
Steve looked at him, before his attention went back to the door and he stepped forward, into the cast iron bunker. Katie followed him in, Bucky taking up the rear and a couple of meters in front of them was a caged elevator. The three of them climbed in, Steve pressing the button hanging from the top and they descended into the depths of the bunker in silence until it reached its destination with a soft thud.
Steve nodded to Bucky and then heaved up the cage door, Bucky readying his gun as they walked slowly down a corridor, keeping close to the wall. This time Bucky went first, Katie second, Steve following. Katie kept her gun raised, eyes sharp as she looked round into an alcove full of junk, the place seemed to be nothing but a dumping ground. They continued to move down the corridor before a loud thud rang around, causing them to spin around. Bucky aimed his gun back down the corridor, as did Katie, whilst Steve pulled his shield in front of him.
“You ready?” Steve asked, looking at Katie, then over at his friend as he took a slight step forward so he was almost shielding them both taking a step down the flight of stairs in front of them.
Katie nodded as Bucky replied “Yeah.”
The double doors at the bottom began to open, but it wasn’t another super soldier that greeted the trio. It was Tony in his full Iron Man suit.
Katie stared in surprise as her brother retracted his helmet.
“You seem a little defensive.” Tony said as Steve strode down the steps towards him, shield covering his body. Katie followed a yard or so behind, her gun now by her side.
“It's been a long day.”  Steve replied, shield still raised, not quite sure what Stark was doing there. Bucky shifted slightly and Tony turned his head to look at him.
“At ease, Soldier. I'm not currently after you.”
“Then why are you here?” Katie asked.
“Could be your story aint so crazy.” Tony said, shrugging.
“Sorry, is that you admitting you’re wrong?” she asked, raising her eyebrow slightly at her brother.
“Maybe.” Tony shrugged.
“Ross?” Steve looked at him.
“Ross has no idea I'm here. I'd like to keep it that way. Otherwise, I gotta arrest myself”
“Well, that sounds like a lot of paperwork” Steve quipped as he lowered his shield “It's good to see you, Tony.”
“You too Cap.” his brother-in-law smiled softly before he looked over at Bucky who still had the gun raised
“Hey, Manchurian Candidate, you're killing me. There's a truce here. You can drop…”
Steve motioned at Bucky to lower the gun and he did.
“So how did you find us?” Katie asked
“I went to the prison.” He sighed, “Spoke to Sam.”
“How are they?” Steve asked.
Tony hesitated “Angry, mostly at me. Clint especially but… they’re, ok.”
Katie looked at him, she had the feeling he was holding something back but now wasn’t the time.
“What made you change your mind?” Bucky asked Tony. He may have lowered his gun but because his Captain had asked him to, but he was still unsure.
“I got an update from the Berlin police…” he said, turning to face the man. “The Task Force called for a psychiatrist as soon as you were captured. They dispatched a Dr Broussard from Geneva but he was intercepted by the man who questioned you.”
“You got a name?” Katie asked her brother.
“Yeah, Colonel Helmut Zemo, Sokovian Intelligence. He ran Echo Skorpion, a Sokovian covert kill squad”
“Sokovia…” Katie sighed as Steve groaned, “Is that place set to follow us around for the rest of our days?”
“You think that’s what he wants with these Super Soldiers?” Steve asked. “Some form of army to get revenge?”
Tony made a face, shrugging.
“Your guess is as good as mine Cap, but I reckon so, yeah.”
Tony re-engaged his helmet and the 4 of them set off to continue the search. Katie felt bolstered by her brother’s appearance, and Steve also felt hopeful. Hopeful that they could sort this out then go home, together, and work through the whole unholy mess that had been left in the wake of the Accords. Still, they moved cautiously and silently until Tony, who was at the front, turned to his right, into a smaller corridor at the end of which was a vast chamber.
“I got heat signatures.” He said gently.
“How many?” Steve asked.
“Uh…one.” Tony said as he walked into the chamber.
“One?” Katie frowned. She looked at Steve and then the two of them turned to Bucky who shrugged, equally as puzzled.
As they all walked up the 3 small steps into the chamber Katie could just about make out several huge pillars when the lights in each of them snapped on. It was then that the all saw they weren’t pillars, they were capsules. Each containing an enhanced soldier surrounded by some form of hazy, yellow mist.
The four of them looked around, bewildered when the PA system crackled into life, causing Katie to jump.
“If it's any comfort, they died in their sleep”. The voice spoke as Bucky looked up at the solider in the capsule nearest to him whilst Katie continued to the next, her gun still raised. It was then that she noticed there was a bullet hole in the glass and a shot buried right between the female soldiers eyes.
He’d killed them.
“Did you really think I wanted more of you?”
There was another pause as Katie turned to look at Steve and Tony who were walking slowly through the middle of the chamber to her right, towards the machine that was used to wipe the soldiers’ minds. Bucky and Katie exchanged a puzzled glance. None of this added up. Why had he killed them? What had he come all this way for if he didn’t want to activate them?
“I’m grateful to them, though. They brought you here” the voice said, and then a window lit up to their right. Zemo was in there. Steve hurled his shield at the window but it simply bounced off the glass and returned to him where he was stood by my side.
“Please, Captain.” Zumo spoke with amusement “ The Soviets built this chamber to withstand the launch blast of UR-100 rockets”
“I'm betting I could beat that.” Tony said, as he and Steve rounded the chair to the right, Bucky and Katie to the left.
“Oh, I'm sure you could, Mr. Stark. Given time. But then you'd never know why you came.”
“You killed innocent people in Vienna just to bring us here?” Steve stepped forward so there was just the glass separating his face from Zemo’s as he glared at him.
“I thought about nothing else for over a year. I studied you. I followed you. But now that you're standing here, I just realized… there's a bit of green in the blue of your eyes. How nice to find a flaw.”
Steve drew back slightly, frowning as Katie reached his side.
“You're Sokovian.” she said, watching the man, his brown eyes flickering to hers “ Is that what this is about?”
“Sokovia was a failed state long before you blew it to hell.” Zemo shook his head “ No. I'm here because I made a promise.”
Steve studied Zemo as he asked “you lost someone?
Zemo bowed his head and clicked his tongue. “I lost everyone. And so will you.”
Steve watched as Zemo pressed something and then a screen just behind them, to the right clicked on. He shot another look at Zemo before he made my way over to it, as Katie followed.
“An empire toppled by its enemies can rise again…but one which crumples from within?” Zemo spoke and Katie glanced back at him, Steve doing the same “That's dead… forever.”
Katie looked at the screen, the still image that was portrayed was somewhere very familiar. Her eyes flicked to the date on the freeze frame. December 16 1991. And in that split second she understood.
One which crumbles from within…
This was about splitting the Avengers up, pitting them against one another.
“I know that road.” Tony jerked her out of her thoughts from where he stood to her right, “What is this?” he spoke louder, aimed at Zemo who didn’t answer.
Tony glanced back at the screen and Katie felt herself grow cold as the footage began to play. The Stark siblings watched as their parent’s car entered the frame and crashed into a tree.  And then the Winter Soldier rode up and got of his motorbike.
Katie glanced at Tony and could see his unease was increasing, his brow furrowing as he watched the driver of the car, their dad, laying on the ground. Tony inhaled deeply as the footage progressed and the Winter Soldier walked over to their dad who had struggled out of the car and hoisted him up by his hair and stared down at him.
Tony wasn’t watching the screen anymore. He was stood, eyes fixed on Bucky who had his head bowed. The soldier took a deep breath and glanced over at Tony, his eyes locking with the man’s. Tony looked away and back to the screen as the tears began to freely fall from Katie’s eyes. On the footage the Winter Soldier reined blow upon blow upon her father before dragging him by his collar and shoving him back into the driver’s seat. She felt Tony take her hand, his Iron Man Gauntlet tightening painfully around her fingers as The Winter Soldier rounded the car and reached in through the window. At that point she couldn’t take it anymore and she turned away, supressing the sob that was rising in her throat and pressed her face into Steve’s chest were he stood besides her side on, watching Tony carefully. He gently placed a hand at the back of his wife’s head before he glanced back at the screen to see the Winter Solder aiming a gun at the surveillance camera, shooting it.
There was a moment’s pause and Katie moved and looked over to where Bucky was stood a few paces behind them, his head bowed, shoulders slumped in disgrace. He looked up, his own tears clouding his eyes and then Tony lunged, and  Bucky’s face contorted into panic, his rifle flying up as Steve hastily moving to stop Tony grabbing his arm.
“Tony, Tony.” he conciliated.
Tony looked down at the screen again, before he looked up at Steve, the tears glistening in his eyes as Katie wiped away her own with the back of her hands.
“Did you know?” Tony asked his voice barely audible.
“I didn’t know it was him.”  Steve began, his voice pleading as he looked at Tony.
“Don’t bullshit Rogers!” Tony cut him off before Steve could continue, his voice full of fury. “Did you know?”
There was a pause, before Steve sighed and dropped his head slightly. “Yes”.
Tony pushed Steve away before he glanced back at the screen.
“Tony.”  Katie said as he turned to look at her. “We didn’t know for sure, not until…”
“You knew as well?” Tony asked, his voice cracking as he looked at his sister and she began to cry again as she nodded, and Tony’s chest tightened with betrayal and heartbreak.
He stepped back, his chin jutting upwards twitchily before he re-engaged the Iron man helmet. He pushed Katie out of the way and as she tumbled left he punched Steve hard, sending him to the floor. Bucky started to fire, bullets easily deflecting off Tony’s Iron Man suit and he shot a beam at Bucky, disarming him and then flew across the chamber, slamming him into the floor. “Tony, please!” Katie shouted, as Tony jumped on Bucky’s chest. Steve stood up, threw his shield which hit Tony, distracting him momentarily before he tackled him from the front, barging him backwards. Then Steve was on the floor, then Bucky was there, it was getting really out of hand and Katie was powerless to stop any of it.
“You need to go.” Steve instructed as he cut the restraints that Tony had fired at him off his legs.
“I can’t!” she said stubbornly, “he’s my brother, Steve!”
“That wasn’t a request.” Steve repeated firmly “Go, get Zumo. If we don’t apprehend him, then all this is for nothing.”
She hesitated for a second.
“Katie!” he said, voice full of authority.
“Alright.” she swallowed “but please...don’t…”
She trailed off as Steve gently touched her face before he leapt up, shield raised. Then she turned and ran. Back the way they had come, the sounds of blasts and yells and metal on metal growing fainter and fainter as she sprinted down the corridors, the tears in her eyes hindering her view and sense of direction.
Every so often snippets of the footage flashed across her mind. Her mom and dad, pleading for their lives before Bucky, no, the Winter Soldier coldly executed them. This entire situation was a mess, and she had no idea how any of them were going to come back from this. Whether they could ever come back from this.
Eventually she made it outside. The snow had been falling, almost completely eradicating any sign of the three sets of footprints that were hers, Steve and Bucky’s, leading into the bunker, but there was one set leading away.
She took out one of her pistols, having lost her rifle in the chamber somewhere, and began to follow them, eventually coming to a thicket of trees. As she approached she could hear the sounds of voices, it sounded like one of them was talking via a phone.
“You should've seen his little face. Just try, okay? I'm going to bed. I love you.”
It was a woman’s voice and then Katie spotted Zumo, he was sat by a rock, looking at the phone in his hand. As she approached someone else emerged from the corner of her eyesight and she spun, raising her gun. It was T’Challa, Black Panther suit fully engaged.  He gestured at her, palms up, before he retracted his helmet and spoke to Zumo.
“I almost killed the wrong man.”
“Hardly an innocent one.” Zumo shot back, no sign of surprise in his voice at them two of them being there.
“This is all you wanted.” Katie shook her head sadly, the cold snowy wind whipped her hair about her face and it stung her cheeks which were wet with tears. He looked up at her, eyeing the gun which she still had trained on him. “To see us rip each other apart?”
“My father lived outside the city.” Zemo began to explain “I thought we would be safe there. My son was excited. He could see the Iron Man from the car window. I told my wife, "Don't worry. They are fighting in the city. We're miles from harm." When the dust cleared… and the screaming stopped. It took me two days until I found their bodies. My father… still holding my wife and son in his arms. And the Avengers? “
He looked up at Katie and she saw the hatred in his eyes as he glared back. “You went home”
“None of us wanted any of it.” she shook her head, eyes welling up again “There isn’t a day goes by where I don’t wish things could have turned out differently. We tried, but we couldn’t save everybody…”
“I knew I couldn't kill you.” Zumo ignored her. “More powerful men than me have tried. But, if I could get you to kill each other…”
Kill each other.
Katie swallowed, her thoughts returning to Steve and Tony back in the bunker.
“I'm sorry about your father. He seemed a good man. With a dutiful son” Zumo looked up at T’Challa.
“Vengeance has consumed you. It's consuming them.” T’Challa blinked ruefully and retracted the claws in his gloves. “I am done letting it consume me. Justice will come soon enough”
Zumo smiled thinly, and for the first time Katie saw that he had a gun in his hand. “Tell that to the dead”
As he raised the gun to shoot himself T’Challa grabbed the shaft of it, absorbing the bullet and shot in his hand before he rolled round behind Zumo, getting him into a headlock.
“The living are not done with you yet.”
All 3 of them fell silent and Katie slumped onto a rock, her head in her hands. Whatever happened now, it didn’t matter. Zumo had gotten what he wanted. The Avengers were split, right down the middle, Tony and Steve were pitted against each other. Her brother and Husband.
And she had no idea what she was going to do.
*******
The fight went too far. Tony blasted Bucky's metal arm off of his body which sent Steve off into a frenzy but he lost his shield in the fracas that had ensued. And now, he stood in between Tony and that final blast that the billionaire knew would end his parents' killer once and for all. And Tony was going through him if he had to.
"He's my friend." Steve pleaded breathing heavily and he looked at Tony hoping to get through to him. Surely he understood it wasn’t Bucky that had done it, it was Hydra, it was always fucking Hydra.
"So was I." Tony answered flatly before punching Steve in the face once, twice then threw him into the opposite wall. Steve coughed, spitting out blood, then began to unsteadily work his way back up to his feet. "Stay down," Tony warned aiming his repulsor beam at him "Final warning."
Steve lifted both his hands in a fighting stance shrugging slightly as he said, "I can do this all day."
I can do this all day… those words roused Bucky and for a moment he was in an alley, bailing the little blonde punk out of a fight. Well, why break the habit of a lifetime? He grabbed Tony's ankle with his remaining hand, distracting him and Tony turned kicking him in the face rendering him unconscious again. Before he could react Steve grabbed him from behind and with a monumental heave he lifted him over his head, Tony tried to fly away but with his failing jets it was no use and he landed hard when Steve threw him down onto the concrete.
And then Steve was on top of him throwing punch after punch, grabbing his previously discarded shield bringing that down onto the mask until it broke and fell apart revealing Tony's frighten gaze to Steve.
Steve raised his shield one more time and Tony brought his hands up to cover his face but that wasn’t Steve’s intention, he couldn’t and wouldn’t ever hurt him like that. Instead, he brought it down hard onto the arc reactor. Tony lowered his arms and stared up at Steve with a mixture of surprise, betrayal and resentment and the soldier looked back at him, his own face contorted with remorse as he rolled off to the side of the now useless suit.
Both men took a moment to catch their breath as fatigue and exhaustion begin to set in, Steve was the first to move as he pulled the shield from the chest of the suit and hooked it back onto his arm. He glanced back at Tony one last before time, wishing it could be different before making his way over to his best friend and pulling the barely conscious man to his feet.
"That shield doesn't belong to you," Tony spat turning over on his side. "You don't deserve it. My father made that shield!" he shouted angrily.
Steve paused. Howard had made that shield, yes. And he had betrayed the man’s memory by keeping the true nature of his death a secret. Taking a deep breath, he realised Tony was right, he didn’t deserve it after all. Captain America was a righteous man, fighting the good fight, a moral man…and Steve Rogers had been selfish and arrogant thinking he could act as he had without consequence. With an immense air of sadness he shrugged the shield from his arm and let it clang to the floor. Then he proceeded to carry Bucky up the exit and out into the snow.
The sound his shield made as it hit the concrete was a noise that he knew would be forever ingrained in his mind. The sound of him leaving Captain America in a bunker in Siberia.
*****
Katie had no idea how long she sat waiting, lost in her thoughts and worries but eventually she heard a shuffling noise and spun round to see Steve supporting Bucky who was missing his metal arm. Both men were bloodied, battered, but alive.
“Where’s Tony?” she said standing up, looking at Steve.
Steve took a deep breath, “In there. It got out of hand but he’s ok.” Katie immediately headed to the door of the bunker.
“Katie, he won’t listen.” Steve shook his head sadly as he called after her “This…it’s too far gone to fix.
“I have to try Steve, he’s my brother.”
She left the sentence hanging, not looking back as she moved back into the bunker. She had to try and talk him round, make him understand this was what Zemo wanted…  it was the last chance to try and sort all of this out. If she couldn’t then there was no way Steve could go back. No way he would go back.
And she was going to lose one of them.
“Tony.” she said gently, walking towards where he was sat, back against a wall in the depth of the concrete building.
“You know, when Rogers asked for your hand in marriage I couldn’t have been happier. Finally you’d met someone that treat you well, looked after you…now, I wish he’d never come out of that fucking iceberg.” He snarled up at her.
Katie took a deep breath. “You’re upset, I get that.”
“Really? You do?” he said, sarcasm dripping off every word “Oh that’s good because I thought for a moment you were missing the point.”
“What is the point, Tony?” she asked, softly “Do you think for one minute that I like what happened to our Parents?”
“How long have you known?” he looked at her.
“Since we took SHIELD and Hydra down.” she bowed her head.
“2 years?!” his voice rang round the cavern. “You knew for 2 fucking years?” “I didn’t know for certain it was him until yesterday, I swear.” she took a deep breath “But Steve is right. It wasn’t Bucky that did it. It was the Winter Soldier.”
“Oh god, he’s brainwashed you as well.” Tony groaned, banging his head against the wall “That man murdered our parents!!”
“No one is brainwashed, it’s simply a fact. Hydra murdered our parents.” she sniffed slightly
“BUT HE DID IT!” Tony yelled, “And whilst that mind control is in there he’s a danger and he needs to be dealt with.”
“He needs help.”
Tony laughed, scornfully “Frankly if you believe that, you’re the one that needs help.”
"We both know what it’s like to be tortured, to have your dignity stripped from you in a way people cannot possibly imagine.” she turned to her brother “And for us it was weeks Tony, fucking weeks. He endured it for 70 damned years." "He killed our mom!" "And he saved my life!" Katie said, her voice cracking "The Winter Soldier did those things, not Bucky Barnes.Tone, this is tearing me in two. I can’t choose between you, I can’t do it!" "You already chose." "No, I didn’t. I did what I thought was right. Not just the Accords but coming here. And you know it was right too, deep down or you wouldn’t be here either. You saw those soldiers in there, it could have been so much different." Tony snorted. "For once in your life just admit you'd follow Rogers anywhere..." Katie shook her head, sniffing slightly as her eyes misted over "Look, You're my brother, my father even, and I love you so much, but he is my husband and I love him, with everything I have.” Tony looked at her, and turned away. He felt betrayed, by them both. But as much as he hated what she had done, he loved his sister beyond belief and he knew no matter what happened here there would be no winners. If she stayed her heart would break at losing Steve and she would probably end up inside that shit hole pokey until some agreement or deal was done. And if she left, she might be free, but then he would lose her.
But above all Tony knew the thing that would break her the most was having to make that choice, a choice between a life of freedom on the run with Rogers, or a choice between being locked up or with him. He couldn't see her go through that, he couldn't see her locked up and miserable and without the man she loved, and who clearly loved her. Tony knew, there was nothing else to do, he had to make the choice for her. And moreover he knew he had to be the one to lose.
"I don’t even wanna look at you right now." His voice cracked and he turned away "Get lost, go on." "And go where?” her voice was strained. "Wherever your precious Captain is running to. And you best run fast. Because if Ross gets hold of you, you're both gonna be in that pokey with the rest of them and I'll make sure Rogers never sees the light of day again." "And me?" She said, her eyes wet as she looked at him. "You went against the accords." He shrugged, unable to meet her eye "Maybe they could get you a double cell" Katie felt her heart breaking. Her brother, the man who had been there all her life, was actively pushing her away. This is what it had come to. But just as she was about to argue, try and see they could get a way through this, he delivered the final blow. "You know, I'm glad mom and dad ain't here to see this, because they'd be so ashamed of you...” he took a deep breath before he delivered the blow he knew would kill her, and he was going to hate himself for it. “You disgust me." That. That there. Was the moment Katie felt her heartbreak. "Tony." her voice cracked "Tell me you don’t mean that." "I mean every word." he lied. Because he didn’t. He didn’t mean any of it. He was beyond proud of her, how strong she was. But he knew, this was the only way she could be spared the agony of a shitty choice.
With a shaking sob Katie stood up and began to walk across the cavern slowly, giving Tony a chance to stop her but he didn't. As she reached the start of the corridor she stopped, taking a deep breath and turned back to look at him through her tears.
“Me not telling you about mom and dad was a mistake. But I did it to save you from all this, save you from hurting because I figured you’d seen enough over the past goodness knows how long.” she shrugged, wiping her face “I’m so sorry Tony.”
He looked away, not meeting her eyes because he couldn’t.  “Just go.” he said softly.
She walked from the cavern as calmly as she could. Once she was out of site she began to sprint, wanting nothing more than the comfort of Steve. She was that wrapped up in her thoughts, twice she took a wrong turn and hit a dead end, screaming in frustration, before eventually, after what seemed like a lifetime she burst out into the snow before collapsing onto the floor, a loud agonising wail erupting from her chest.
“Katie?” Steve saw his girl fall to her knees, the noise she made chilled him to the bones. He sprinted straight towards her, ignoring the aching all over his body from the blows he had taken over the past 3 days or so. He dropped besides her “Honey?”
Katie took a deep breath before she looked up at Steve unable to voice her emotions or explain what happened. She simply bowed her head again and shook it. Steve sighed and placed an arm round her shoulder “Come on.”
With his help she rose to her feet, looking round. There was no sign of T’Challa. Zemo or Bucky.
“Where is everyone?” she asked, sliding her arm around Steve’s waist, more for support than anything else.
“T’Challa left about 2 minutes ago. He’s taken Zemo to the United Nations.” Steve said as they trudged through the snow.
“Least Bucky’s in the clear.” she sniffed, always searching for the positive.
“He’s not.” Steve sighed “Even if he’s proven not guilty they’ll want to lock him up, especially whilst Hydra are in his mind.”
They stopped at the bottom of the ramp to the jet.
“T’Challa has offered to help.” Steve turned to Katie, taking a deep breath as he knew this was it. The point at which she was going to have to make a decision on what she did next, and his heart was breaking for her. “He’s given me the coordinates to Wakanda and says he has someone there who could assist in fixing whatever it is Hydra did to Buck’s mind.”
“If the UN catch on he’s harbouring him it’ll cause even more trouble.” Katie sighed. “I know, which is why they can’t find out.” Steve said looking at her “T’Challa is going to tell the UN that me, you, Bucky and Tony are here, so they can send a craft out to pick everyone up. Then the cover story is that in the meantime Bucky and I escaped, and no one knows where we have gone.”
“Think they’ll buy it?” she asked, ignoring for a moment the fact that he had said Bucky and I, not Bucky and us.
“They’ve no reason not to.” Steve said after a moment.
“And he really thinks he can help him?”
Steve nodded. “So that’s the plan. Take Bucky and lay low for a while, at least until I can figure out what to do next”
He paused for a moment and then looked up the ramp before taking a deep breath and looking at her.
“I didn’t want any of this to happen” he sighed, “and if you don’t want to come I’ll understand.” he took a deep breath, as he grabbed both of her hands, the tears swimming in his eyes “I don’t ever want to force you to make a choice so whatever you do decide, I’ll understand, I just want you to know that I love you, I’ll always love you.”
Katie looked up at him, his last words were barely audible above his choked back sob. She knew Steve wasn’t ever going to go back, he couldn’t go back. He wouldn’t settle being behind bars but he was offering her a way out, a chance to stay with Tony. Her husband had never, not once through this entire situation pressured her to take his side. And she hadn’t taken his side, she had done what she believed was the right thing. But now, when it came down to it, there was simply no choice for her to make. Tony hated her, the Accords had finished the Avengers, Ross would make sure she was locked away…and the thought of Steve not being with her broke her more than anything.
There was nothing else left for her to do but go.
Her eyes misted over as she looked up at the man who was her world, her everything. “I can’t stay.” she whispered “Not without you. Please don’t leave me.”
“Leave you?” his voice cracked and he pulled her into his chest, hard, hands pressed at the base of her back and her head as she fisted her hands into the dirty material of his uniform. “Never, Doll.”
“Then get me out of here.” she pulled back to look up at him, gently using her thumbs to wipe away the tears on his face that had run down below the line of his helmet.
“Are you sure?” he had to ask again. “Because if we do this, there’s no going back. You might be able to sort things with Tony if you stay.” “When I’m locked up in prison?” she shook her head “What’s the point in that. Besides, we both know that you wouldn’t stand for it. You’d break me out in a week.”
He gave her a soft smile, she was right. He would. She leaned up to place a soft kiss on his lips before she turned and strode up the ramp into the jet, wiping her eyes and putting her weapons away silently. Steve followed her in and she turned to look at him when she spotted Bucky who was looking significantly worse for wear sat on one of the seats.
“You ok?” she said gently. He looked up and gave her a small smile.
“Yeah, look, I’m sorry, I really am.” his voice cracked and his head hung again.
“I know.” she said sadly as she touched his shoulder and headed over to the co-pilots seat.
Steve settled in the pilot seat just in front of her, removing his helmet and punching in some co-ordinates. Moments later the jet was airborne.
“Auto-pilot locked. ETA 4.5 hours” Katie muttered, reading the computer before she stood up and dropped her hand on Steve’s shoulder “Think it’s about time I patched you boys up.”
“Start with Buck.” he said gently, standing up “He’s worse than I am.”
She moved to the back of the jet and began rummaging in the first aid boxes gathering various things before she told Bucky to sit on the gurney in the medi-bay area of the jet.
“This is probably gonna sting a little.” she said, biting her lip as she began to wipe gently at the various cuts and bruises on Bucky’s face. If it hurt he didn’t give any outward signs that it did. She then moved to the back of his head, clearing up a nasty gash from where he had taken a hit and once that was done she checked his arm, there was no new wound, but his metal arm had been removed just below the shoulder blade, leaving the metal socket intact.
“Does it hurt?” she asked him gently.
“No.”
She looked at Steve, shrugging as if to say that she had done the best she could and he nodded, looking at Bucky.
“Why don’t you rest?” He said, nodding over to the seats. “We’ve got a while before we arrive and I doubt any of us had much sleep last night.”
“You guys certainly didn’t…” Bucky said slyly. Katie shared a look with Steve who she was amused to see had flushed from the neck upwards, the patches of his face that weren’t dirty were now a bright crimson.
“Walls in hotel rooms are thin…” Bucky continued, grunting slightly as he dropped into one of the seats, leaning back and closing his eyes.
Katie bit her lip as Steve sat down on the stretcher, same place Bucky had sat before. She studied his weary face and noticed that there was a huge bruise forming on his right cheek and a smaller abrasion on his left. His nose had at some point been bleeding and there was a split in his lip, but all in all his helmet had saved him for the most, as he was nowhere near as bad as Bucky. She gently wiped at his face, as tenderly as she could to avoid hurting him. She cleaned off the dirt, dried blood and then the cut above his eye, before moving to the one on his lip. As she touched it with the antiseptic wipe he hissed slightly.
“Stop being a baby…” she said, teasingly as she continued. He opened his eyes and simply watched his wife’s face intensely. Her eyes were red rimmed from her crying and he couldn’t help but wonder what Tony had said to her when she had gone back in.  But he knew she would tell him when she was ready. Eventually she finished and dropped the wipe she had been using into the dish to my right, and he placed both his hands on her hips and pulled her closer to him, so that she was stood in between his legs.
“I love you so much.” He said gently. She brought her hand up to brush across his now clean but bruised face and sighed.
“I know.” she said gently, placing a soft kiss onto his lips, careful not to aggravate any cuts further. He would heal fast, he always did. In a few days there would be no evidence of any of these.
From over in the corner of the jet there came a soft groan “Get a room…preferably not next to mine.”
*****
It was 3 hours into the journey when she told Steve everything. What Tony had said, how he had told her to leave, and that he was disgusted with her, and Steve’s heart broke for her as she cried again, her tears falling to his shoulder as he sat and simply held her before insisting she also took some rest. He knew what Tony had said was bullshit, the man was ridiculously proud of his sister, and he found himself understanding why he had done it. To save her from an impossible choice. Tony was as selfless as the next person where his sister was involved.
About 45 minutes or so later, when Katie was fast asleep, Bucky woke up and he noticed Steve was sat in the seat at the front, simply staring out of the window.
“Got anything to drink?” he asked, and Steve’s head snapped round.
“Should be some water in the fridge, hang on…” “I lost my arm Punk, not my legs.” Bucky grumbled, heading over to where Steve was directing.
“Glad to see your attitude is still as bad as ever.” Steve raised an eyebrow as Bucky threw a bottle to him which he caught in his right hand.
“Yeah well, there are somethings even being brainwashed can’t get rid of.” he sighed as he headed over to the seat by Steve. Clasping the bottle in his knees he worked the top off with his right hand and took a deep swig.
“Do you really think they can do it? You know, get whatever Hydra put in my head out?” he asked.
“T’Challa seems to think so.” Steve nodded, looking at his friend.
“Well, perhaps when he has we can catch up properly…” Bucky’s voice was wistful.
”Like old times huh?” Steve said with a twinkle in his eye.
Bucky smiled before he grew serious again. “You know I did think about finding you, but…”
Steve looked at him for a moment and then leaned forward slightly. “How much do you remember?” he asked.
Bucky sighed, “I remember most things, about my life that is, but at first it was just a big jumble. That’s why I wrote it all down...”
The two men fell silent again, Steve full of his own guilt again for not going back for him that day he fell from the train. He could have spared him all of this.
“How did you do it?” Bucky asked suddenly, making Steve look back at him “Wake up 70 years in the future and just carry on?” “Katie.” Steve said instantly “I came out of the ice, I’d lost everyone I knew, had no idea what to do…but then I found her…almost like it was meant to be.”
“I thought Steve Rogers didn’t believe in fate?” Bucky teased “What was it you used to say? You make your own luck?” Steve chuckled “I didn’t, I mean I don’t really, but whatever it was be it fate, luck, circumstance…I’m just glad it happened.” he trailed off, smiling, before he carried on “You know, I loved Peggy but that was nothing to what I feel for Katie. I can’t imagine being without her.”
Bucky looked at his friend, smiling. He had always known that when Steve found the right dame he would fall hard and fast, and it was clear he had. After all of his bad luck before the war it was nice to see the man so happy and loved. But Bucky wasn’t going to let it lie without the chance to tease his friend. He grinned and looked at him, a cheeky smile spreading across his weary face.
“Yeah she’s pretty hot too. How did a punk like you manage to pull a gal like that?” “Buck!” Steve said exasperatedly as Bucky laughed.
“I’m just playing with you Stevie. I’m glad you found someone.” Bucky said gently. “Just gutted I wasn’t at the wedding, well properly anyway. You looked happy though when you came out of the church.”
“I was. And I wish you could have been there properly too pal.” Steve said, his voice taking on a teasing tone “But Sam made a pretty good substitute best man.”
“Wait, you had Seagull as your best man?” Bucky’s tone was indignant.
“He’s a good friend.” Steve said.
There was another pause.
“You know I haven’t thanked you yet.” Steve said gently “For saving her life.” he nodded over to where Katie was curled up in a seat under a blanket “I don’t know what would have happened if you hadn’t been there.” “Right time right place.” Bucky shrugged “You know, I didn’t recognise her at first, just heard all this screaming and…well she was in a bad way.” “I know.” Steve said, softly “They…they hurt her.” Bucky didn’t need to ask what they had done to her. He could imagine.
“She’s ok now though, right?”
“Physically yeah..” Steve nodded “mentally…she still has nightmares sometimes but don’t we all? She’s strong though, way stronger than me…”
“I dunno from the noises I heard last night you seemed to be pretty strong.” Bucky quipped and Steve groaned
“Sorry, our walls at the compound are soundproof so…” he offered an explanation, blushing again.
“Yeah, well the first time we just kinda ignored it but then when you started again an hour later, then again, well…frankly it was a little gross.”
“Guess we just got a bit carried away.” Steve felt the heat spread up his neck.
“Sam said you were showing off.” Bucky smirked causing Steve to snort. “You got some stamina, bud, I’ll give you that.”
“Something we both thank Dr Erskine for on a regular basis.” Steve shot back cheekily and Bucky barked out a laugh.
Then the alert on the cockpit started to go and Katie sat up, rubbing her eyes as the noise roused her. Steve shot her a smile, pretty sure he was still blushing, and then turned to look at the dials on the cockpit
“Hey.” she said, approaching the front, dropping her hand to Bucky’s shoulder as she pressed a soft kiss to Steve’s head “We here?”
“I think so.” Steve frowned, “The co-ords are telling me to drop to 2600, heading 0-3-0…only...”
Katie looked ahead, it was nothing but a thicket of what looked like jungle.
“You trust T’Challa?” she asked, settling in a seat behind him.
“Yeah.”
“Then do it.” she said simply, looking at him like he was an idiot.
Bucky smirked slightly and Steve rolled his eyes, but obeyed all the same. They passed through the trees as they simply disappeared, like a computer image and they were left with the skyline of a beautiful city. Katie let out the breath I hadn’t even realised she had been holding.
"What the fuck?" Bucky whispered, and Steve laughed in agreement.
*****
They were welcomed by T’Challa’s Mother, younger Sister Suri and a few members of his King’s Guard. T’Challa was on his way back from the UN and wouldn’t be back for an hour or so, so in the mean time they were given something to eat and a place to clean up, Katie taking her time in the scalding hot shower in their luxurious suite. Steve had stayed with Bucky and she was glad, as she broke down once more thinking about Tony, wondering where he was. Once she had cried all the tears she had left to cry, she dried off and crawled into the bed passing out almost immediately. She didn’t feel Steve climb in besides her later on that night. He stayed awake for a lot longer than she did, having spent the evening with T’Challa who had filled him in on what the UN had said. Tony was home ok, he knew that much, and the authorities had accepted T’CHalla’s explanation, essentially meaning he, Katie and Bucky were outlaws. For once in his life he had no idea what to do next, and the guilt at dragging her into this was eating him up. With a sigh he wrapped his arms around her, pulled her close and drifted into an uneasy sleep.
The next day felt slightly more positive. After breakfast Suri took Bucky into her lab for a scan on his brain. Bucky had worried that going into a scanner would remind him of the machine Hydra used and could bring out the Winter Soldier again, but Suri had simply smiled and shook her head, before using what looked like a beaded bracelet to perform the scan.
Now she stood over a tablet looking at the image.
"Your mind has been fighting this the whole time." she said tapping a few places on the tablet and bringing up a hologram image of Bucky’s brain for them all to see. She pointed to a bright, pink line which snaked all over the image “That's what they put in there but it hasn’t melded properly, which I suspect is why you required constant…how to put this…recalibration I suppose.” she pondered something before she turned to look at the soldier and smiled. “I can fix this.”
"Really?"  Bucky said, his head jerking up as he looked at her, his eyes shining.
"I may have to engineer something new equipment wise, and it could take me a few months to do it- but it is reversible." She nodded, voice oozing with confidence as she looked at the scans of Bucky’s brain on the screen
"How?"  Bucky frowned, hardly daring to believe what she was saying. He would be free…
“I can cut it out.” she said, like it was something she did every day. “Like I say, it has not melded to your brain. Think of it as foreign object, not a part of you, and all foreign objects can be removed."
Katie squeezed Steve’s hand as Steve let out a loud breath as he looked up at the ceiling. Bucky was going to be ok. He glanced down at his wife who smiled at him, as they both turned to see Bucky’s eyes were wet as he wiped tears off his face. Suri dropped a hand to his shoulder.
“You won't have to live with this anymore, Sergeant Barnes." she said to him.
Bucky looked at her, then to Steve before his face crumpled and in a stride Steve had closed the distance between them and wrapped his arms around his friend in a brotherly hug as Bucky sat on the bench, unable to believe that he was going to be free, finally free from Hydra. Katie watched the two of them as T’Challa gently squeezed her shoulder as he and Suri made to leave the room. She followed them, pausing in the doorway to turn to look at the two men, Steve stepping back from Bucky to look down at him as he wiped at his face, a teary smile crossing his features.
It had cost them everything, but at least there was something good going to come out of it all.
