Episode 21 of Malevolent (s3e1, not counting Coda)
Previous | Next
listened to it yesterday, so I'll try to keep this short because I'm really raring to start the next one hhhhhhhh
SO UH THE ACTING IS HONESTLY FUCKING GREAT IN THIS EP
Also literally all my dreams of "intense and intricate interpersonal drama" have been more than fulfilled
Of course John would immediately try to pull some kind of smooth manipulation (it honestly hits me like an instinctual survival tactic than anything truly calculated)
Of course Arthur would immediately be heartbroken by that and channel it into giving John shit about it
Of course he's still going to try to evoke some kind of emotion from John
Of course John tries to out-dick Arthur by posturing and threatening him, and of course Arthur claps right back
"I beat you, Yellow. A mere mortal. I went face to face with you, and I won." Honestly? Kind of hot
And of course they both end up confused about what's happening - John thinks he's being kept as a captive, but only because he gave Athur the impression that he's aware of his existence as the King, but only because that was the first good cover story his interactions with Arthur offered him
Tumblr media
Arthur's indignant and baffled "What!?" just fucking sends me for some reason
Btw I am very intruiged by Arthur's entirely accurate observation that John has no business being thing preoccupied with the matters of some mortal
"If you are as powerful and god-like as you truly believe you are, recognize that the smartest thing you can do – genuinely! – is to get on side with me. It is the absolute most logical, straightforward way to get what you want. Gods shouldn’t care this much about arguing with a mortal." HONESTLY? YES
And then John immediately goes "...there's snowshoes you could use" and Arthur just thanks him genuinely instead of holding it over him
It makes me want to punch the air - fucking balance, fucking vindication
But also like, when John gets bored and annoyed, his first instinct - when threats no longer work - is to ask questions
John is, on a very fundamental level, curious
And it's pretty goddamn obvious that John is not unfamiliar with fear
Honestly, more than ever, I feel like the King in Yellow must have started out human, and I'm bolding that because I want to see how wrong I end up being
ALSO LIKE, ALL OF THIS:
Tumblr media
IT MAKES ME WANT TO CHEW DRYWALL BECAUSE THEY COULD BOTH BE RIGHT, AND THEY COULD BOTH BE WRONG, AND THEY COULD BOTH BE RIGHT AT THE SAME TIME
And it could all hinge on what they value more in the moment, what they are OKAY with being correct
Having no other option is OKAY when you WANT it
Also btw, after having Arthur be so unexpectantly on top of his game handling John, it was ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS to see him be such a goober in the bar
AS FAR AS HE KNOWS, THIS IS JOHN'S FIRST DAY WITH ARTHUR
Tumblr media
WELCOME TO EMBARRASSMENT JOHN, IT'S A VERY HUMAN EMOTION
Also I adore how this show lets comedy and tragedy walk hand in hand because when John asks Arthur if he plays the piano and Arthur goes "Yes, of course!" like he's confused why John would need to ask, I think I died a little
And then they talk about music and poems and Arthur is sick in bed, talking about how a poem makes him feel strong
I want to read every single piece of fanfic this episode inspired
Dead body count: Arthur is one if you count the hangover he'll have tomorrow
Names: Larson (as in Larson Mining Company), Jack Larson (whoever wrote inept letter to his mother in the cabin, presumably employed by the mining company), Addison (the town name)

I think it's been more than two months since I pushed my "Wilbur is remembered far more competent than he is" agenda in your asks.
So let's rectify that, shall we?
Wilbur is pretty fucking incompetent. He's never been that amazing charismatic smooth talker we characterize him as (not that I'm not absolutely behind that too)
Like. Who did he ever successfully smoothtalk? The Lmanbergians? None of them were ever hesitant to join from the very beginning and Eret betrayed them pretty easily when Dream manipulated them.
Techno? Techno wanted to join them, he was the one who reached out to them. There was no convincing needed and Wilbur never convinces Techno of anything Techno wasn't already willing to do by himself.
Dream? Definitely not during the revolution and Dream's support during Pogtopia was Dream following his own agenda, not being influenced by Wilbur in any way.
He couldn't even get Quackity to let him into Las Nevadas.
Nah, the only person Wilbur ever smooth talked is TommyInnit. The fucking powerhouse of this cell. And even that's not completely true. Tommy hasn't been convinced by Wilbur of anything since the very beginning of the Lmanberg revolution. Not during Pogtopia. And not even now (it's not smooth talking if it's just exploiting mental exhaustion and trauma and all that. Tommy isn't convinced of what they're doing.)
Really. Not even Tommy, per se.
He just got Tommy extremely loyal and attached to him.
And honestly, that's all he needs.
You don't need to have influence over everyone, you just need to have strong influence over the right person.
And that's what Wilbur had and has.
Wilbur's accomplishments are just pretty much him having a vision and Tommy throwing himself at it to make it come true.
Wilbur had the idea for L'manberg but Tommy was the one leading the troops. Tommy was the one who negotiated for their independence and got it when Wilbur was negotiating their surrender. Tommy was the one who FOR NO REASON built the escape tunnel they escaped through when Dream blew up L'manberg and he was the one who built the lil panic room at the end. Tommy was the one who's home became the embassy to L'manberg (something Wilbur very much pressured and kinda manipulated him into btw. I'm never not gonna mention that lil detail when the embassy comes up)
Wilbur had the idea and stood around looking pretty. My guy literally stood around looking pretty, without armor, during battles. Just. I love him.
And let's not forget that Tommy was fckin great at being the general. The SMP was so much better equipped and still, L'manberg was kinda winning. To the extend that Dream saw the need for TnT (which was hidden) and the betrayal through Eret (which was hidden)
Dream felt the need to pull two deceitful moves to keep if not even gain the upper hand.
If I'm not mixing stuff up here, correct me if I'm wrong.
And stuff like the tunnel weren't even expected of Tommy. My boy just thought of that on his own and did it on his own. Noone knew it existed. Noone expected it to exist.
After independence Wilbur is implied to have been leading but he generally wasn't around too much. Tommy was keeping order in the more face to face kinda way. He tried to navigate people's personal conflicts and make sure things didn't escalate and just. He did so well.
And Pogtopia? Oh, Pogtopia.
It's a bit more difficult here, since they were no longer on exactly the same side and goals are more muddled but still.
(and I want to make it clear that I'm in no way trying to shame Wilbur for mental health issues or anything. This isn't about that. I'd never fucking even imply that)
Tommy kept morale high. He made sure that other people were fine, when there was a chance. He tried to reassure Wilbur when Wilbur was spiraling, he asked Tubbo if he was happier, he told Tubbo to be safe, he recruited Quackity when he saw the chance while making sure that Quackity's intentions were sincere enough (he didn't just naively offer Quackity a place in Pogtopia and risk it being a trap).
He avoided any kind of destruction to L'manberg as much as possible.
He rallied people.
Really, his one actual flaw was not "turning" on Wilbur. His unwillingness to give up on him or even just incapacitate him or limiting his ability to act as he wanted was what ended up costing him everything. His unwillingness to interfere with Wilburs plans beyond talking to him and threatening him with a crossbow that one time ended up making the 16th possible. And he can hardly be blamed for that.
And Wilbur, during Pogtopia... Well... Nobody liked him, he made everyone uncomfortable and most people just kinda tolerated him because... Yeah...
Without Tommy troop morale would have been abysmal thanks to Wilbur. He constantly put himself and his side down, labeling them as villains and thus morally inferior. He pitted his own people against each other, spread paranoia between his people. No communication or actually planning involving other people. Still refused to wear armor.
And don't get me wrong, that's the point. He wasn't on their side. Obviously Tommy added more to their victory, Wilbur didn't want their victory. But still I just wanna praise my boy Tommy, he was. So amazing. Boy fucking peaked.
He's so good in tactical warfare or whatever you call it.
And I wanna just make it clear that this isn't criticism of Wilbur. Not at all. This isn't criticism at all. This is just about the big fanon perception of Wilbur as this great and mature leader.
Tbh this is actually more about showing people how amazing Tommy was and PLEASE I WANT FICS TO HAVE TOMMY BE MORE OF AN EFFECTIVE POWERHOUSE
Regarding my former ask I just wanted to clarify again that I'm not trying to critique Wilbur or anything.
It's really just that I think it's hilarious how people remember him as way more put together and competent than he really was.
-
Yeah, honestly one of the biggest disservice people have done to c!Tommy in this fandom is fail to portray him as the badass general that he actually was. Like, sure, Wilbur's title was as "general", but he never did anything for it. He gave a few speeches, but then the work was left up to Tommy. Like, genuinely, rewatch the Eret betrayal vod, Wilbur says it openly that he's leaving it in Tommy's hands. And Tommy does manage to lead his troops into an advantageous position! They get their enemies to retire at one point during the very first battle!
Then, of course, there is the betrayal, but, once again, Tommy didn't give up. He built the tunnel for their scuffed escape beforehand and, when everyone was just about ready to give up, he went against Dream in a duel and then traded the discs for their independence without loosing a beat.
Tommy was a BIG asset during that war!
Wilbur mostly was and still is kind of a wreak. And it's not his fault, 'cause mental health is an absolute bitch and he wasn't doing too hot after the war, then it got worse with Pogtopia and even worse during the 13 years in Limbo. And now we are where we are now with Wilbur being... not a great individual.
But still! In Pogtopia Tommy was the de-facto leader. And yeah, that was because Wilbur wasn't on their side anymore, but they didn't entirely know that. Or didn't wanna see that.
Tommy himself was hoping that Wilbur would "come back around" if he managed to get back their country. That was a big motivator for him. And he did everything that was in his power to do to not lose either Wilbur or L'Manburg. He tried talking to Wilbur multiple times, tried persuading him that there was another way, he never bought into Wilbur's ideals, he recruited people and he lead the troops once again. It wasn't Techno that lead the troops (despite him being a much better fighter) it was Tommy. And once everything was exploded and Techno and Wilbur betrayed them? Well he kept encouraging people. Literally I'm begging everyone to watch that vod! Tommy was there at every step of the way, telling Niki that it wasn't over, telling Quackity to keep fighting and, after that, you know who was there to validate Tubbo's presidency? To rally people behind him? It wasn't Tubbo. Tommy gathered everyone by the L'Mantree and got their spirits high once again.
He is just genuinely amazing.
And, like, yeah now Wilbur managed to manipulate Tommy to an extent to be by his side. But that's not that much of an accomplishment anymore because Tommy has just been through so much that he's exhausted now, as you said. Like, remember when Tommy said he wanted to be on Wilbur's side because "he gets things done"? Well, I'm still waiting to see that one honestly...

how would u cast your mutuals as sw/pedro characters? ur gorg btw
First of all, THANK YOU for the compliment. You are VERY sweet.
I am honored to be the recipient of this PARTICULAR ask because I’ve seen other blogs in the Pedro corner of this hellsite get similar asks, and I never thought I’d get to be part of it. I don’t consider myself a particularly loud voice in our little corner, so this really is appreciated.
Before I get started, I want to say that I in NO WAY intend to leave ANYONE out. I do not intentionally or knowingly exclude anyone, nor would I.  It's probably just as simple as we haven’t talked as much and I don’t want to miscast. f we’re mutuals, and you want to know which Pedro I think you are, PLEASE send me an ask. This is meant to be fun and not exclusionary. I love each and every one of you SO MUCH.
Let’s do it:
1. @ithinkhesgaybutwesavedmufasa is OBERYN. Could it BE anyone else?? Katryn and I first bonded over Oberyn, and her depth of knowledge and understanding of the character (as well as Ellaria) really just proves the point-- Oberyn is full of depth and passion. He writes poetry, for god’s sake. He’s creative, as Katryn is creative. He cares about his family and his children above all else and is compassionate. Katryn has that compassion with her life and with her job. Also, snarky bisexual powerhouses for the WIN. Katryn is Oberyn.
Tumblr media
2. @rzrcrst is EZRA. She said it herself the other day-- she and Ezra are SO similar. I agree. The depth of feeling with which Kenzie communicates is on par, if not greater, than that of Ezra’s. They are both wordsmiths through and through, avid readers, appreciators of nature. Not to mention, they are both caregivers. Kenzie is a mother, and Ezra is paternal with Cee. Ezra is passionate, intense, well-spoken, and beautiful. That’s Kenzie to a “T.” Kenzie is Ezra.
Tumblr media
3. @qveenbvtch can she BE anyone else BUT JAVIER? Eryn is cunning, resourceful, hilarious, and outspoken. She is Javier. Where Javier has a strong profile, Eryn’s cheekbones could CUT GLASS. Javier has vintage flair with his style (hello, 80s), and so does Eryn. She always looks AMAZING. Eryn is one of THE most quick-witted people I have had the pleasure of befriending on here. Javier’s job is one where you have to be quick on your feet. Also, I think both Eryn and Javier have excellent taste in booze and aesthetics. Eryn is Javier.
Tumblr media
4. @zeldasayer -- Don’t take this the wrong way, and LET ME FINISH. But ZELDA is MAXWELL LORD. Even though the movie hasn’t come out yet, our corner of the fandom has painted Max as someone who strives for greatness, who appreciates the finer things in life, who has excellent taste, and is intellectually ruthless. That’s ZELDA. She has amazing taste, aesthetically and otherwise. She is clearly the type of person to demand and achieve excellence. She has a dreamy quality that I feel like Maxwell would value. She has a rapier wit. Not to mention, Maxwell in the comics? He’s POWERFUL. He has the powers of persuasion. Zelda has a powerful presence, is well-spoken and has a MAGNETISM that I think we’ve all recognized in Max.
Tumblr media
5. @forever-rogue is FRANKIE. Patricia has a beautiful soul, a creative streak, and an amazing mind. She is Frankie. Catfish has to be tactically brilliant to have his job, and he needs to be technically savvy. Patricia is a doer that way-- she's an amazing contributor within this fandom, her stories are dreamy and beautiful. She is someone who will be there when you need her (we’ve reminisced about being in the same field and the challenges that has) and she is never at a loss for a kind word, all while being tough as hell. Patricia is Frankie.
Tumblr media
6. @winters-buck is Max Phillips. Hear me OUT---- Ash is bitingly clever and witty. Ash can talk you into any one of her ideas, which she will bounce off of you at ALL HOURS. She is a nonstop source of fun and energy (not in the obnoxious way that salesman Max is), rather the bright side of that trait. Ash is endlessly kind and driven in a way that I feel like Max would appreciate. She is hot as hell with good hair and a wickedly sharp mind. Ash is Max.
Tumblr media
7. @cosmicbug379 is Marcus Pike. Kylie has a sweet and friendly quality that I think is 100 percent PURE Marcus. Kylie is creative, thoughtful, hilarious, and kind. Marcus is the kind of man who values people’s genuine character, to feel genuine love. That’s Kylie. Have you READ her writing? She writes beautiful Faramir, an empathetic and underappreciated character. It’s that level of empathy, attention to detail, and beautiful loquaciousness that makes me think that Kylie is Marcus.
Tumblr media
8. @mythologicalmango I know she’s not really into the Pedro stuff as much, but she puts up with all of my shitposting. And when I think of Rachel, I think of DIN DJARIN aka The Mandalorian. Din is strong, unafraid of adversity, but unfailingly kind. That’s Rachel. Rachel faced down a daunting move this year like it was no big deal. She jumps into adventure, is a lover of reading and learning, and has a strong compassionate streak and a sense of justice. Rachel loves a good Victorian romance, and Din Djarin barely lets a sliver of wrist show. That’s why Rachel is Din Djarin.
Tumblr media
9. @californiakoenig Grace is AGENT WHISKEY. Now, not the canon asswipe who sells out at the end. I’m talking about the smooth, beautiful human who loves the people he cares about deeply and looks amazing while kicking mad ass. Grace is an amazing writer who is endlessly supportive. The side of Jack that we get in Kingsman who is driven, cares about people enough to get into a job where he saves lives, and is capable of deep compassion is why I believe Grace is Whiskey. Anyone who’s read her writing knows she’s amazingly intelligent and compassionate-- just like Jack. (Although Javier would also work for her).
Tumblr media
If I can also throw STAR WARS Characters in here:
@mpanighetti is CASSIAN ANDOR. He knows why.
@atwentywhore is POE DAMERON-- adventurous, unafraid, beautiful.
@mount--cleverest is CAPTAIN PHASMA. A badass, blonde bombshell.
@andallthatmishigas PRINCESS LEIA. WHO ELSE?? A paragon who was born to lead and look beautiful while doing it.
@nappingtopknot is Boba Fett, a hot badass who kicks ass.
AND NONE FOR DAVE YORK, GOODBYE!

BNHA Rewatch: Season 1 Episode 6 “Rage, You Damn Nerd”
mysterylover123
Episode 6, with the best most hilarious title ever! Tells you exactly what you’re in for.
Finally, Bakugo’s reaction! I seriously was waiting through all three episodes for this. Like a Hitchcockian bomb under the table. Almost literally!
Tumblr media
Bakugou .exe has stopped working.
Tumblr media
Aizawa starts his pattern of lying to Class A to get them to do their best. He kinda stops doing this after a while, I’m guessing because it doesn’t take lying anymore, just let Wonder Duo go running off at the mouth and they’ll do the job just as well.
Tumblr media
Momo’s first line! I think we’re introduced to her in a method meant to make her seem a bit smug and condescending, which is interesting - Momo has a similar trajectory to Bakugou in some ways, introduced as Hot Shit and embarrassment used to break that ego, so this is important to keep in mind.
Tumblr media
Aizawa and All Might seemed like they were gonna have a rivalry in early drafts and that got dropped. Anyway, I’m noting the timeline here, as All Might drops the info that this is April 8 (April Fool’s day was Last Week).
Tumblr media
The friendship trio forms! Yay! (BTW I ship Uraraka and Iida, if you didn’t know.) We get a quick sum up of life at UA (sob why can’t my school be more like this) and then transfer on to the start of the Battle Trial Arc. Here it goes!
Tumblr media
Everyone’s in costume! I figured I’d use my fave Costumes for my ranker today, so I’ll comment on them below. (BTW I loved this arc a lot the first time around. I adored how perfect it feels as a simulated Heroes v Villains exercise.)
Tumblr media
All the detailed info on designing costumes and enrolling quirks is another thing I enjoy about BNHA; it feels like such a well-realized world, probably the most fully realized one I’ve encountered in some ways. Horikoshi is so obsessive over details, I love it.
Tumblr media
And it actually serves as a means to illustrate character. Since they designed the costumes themselves, everyone’s choices tell you a little something about who they are. I think that both Deku and Kacchan’s costumes are designed to look like All Might’s - both have pointy hoods like his spiky hair, both have metal gear around the neck, etc. They look alike, yet opposite.
Tumblr media
Deku’s first costume is so doofy looking, though. And it’s kind of symbolic of his whole issue at this point: he wants too badly to be like All Might, so he covers up his own face with a mask that has this weird, distorted fascimile of All Might’s hair and smile. He really needs to up that confidence!
Tumblr media
This is followed by an adorable sequence of All Might trying to be a teacher and explaining the rules of the BTA. I totally empathize with All Might here; starting at a new job like this can’t be easy. (now I’m thinking about the “Even Idiots Can be Teachers” joke in Episode 52 and laughing)
Tumblr media
I wish there was more to comment on with the BTA teams. A few of them feel important. Kaminari and Jirou, of course; one of my ships, they hang out a lot. Also , Ojiro/Tooru, and Tsuyu/Tokoyami get teamed up here (but not Momo and Shoto or Kiri/Mina, so I refuse to call it a shipping pattern). Ashido and Aoyama have a bit of a rivalry going on that starts here. Everyone else’s is pretty random.
Tumblr media
And now the fated showdown of destiny! Well, the first time, anyway. I could watch these two fight all day. The whole series could just be them fighting each other back and forth and yelling while YSR plays and I’d be fine.
Tumblr media
Bakugou is so salty about Deku! The first time around, of course, he just comes across as an asshole. Rewatching it though, it does seem fairly reasonable to be pissed off that Deku’s apparently been lying to him this whole time (because he doesn’t know about OFA, and Deku didn’t even both to lie to him like he did to his mom), and they are fighting in an organized combat mission, so his behavior here makes total sense in hindsight. Amazing how that character development works.
Tumblr media
Uraraka is initially really blase about doing well. in hindsight, I think one of her flaws (at this stage, anyway) was that she basically didn’t know what she wanted and pretty much coasted on Deku (she says as much during the sports festival). She gets over that quickly, but flaws make good characters, so I wanted to point it out.
Tumblr media
Incoming Deku “Kacchan Sugoi” moment #1. I love this little twist, too, on the way we perceive Deku. He doesn’t want revenge on Katsuki or something like that. He wants to beat him (”the incarnation of victory”). Deku is not some frail flower needing protection from the world. Don’t let his cuteness fool you.
Tumblr media
Deku is so effing cool here, TBH - brilliant, tactical, strong, and brings his rival down to earth by judo-tossing him. Damn, the animation on Baku hitting the floor though, you can feel that impact. No wonder he was so pissed! (Deku’s strategic mind is one of my favorite things about him. Also the symbolism in Baku blasting away part of his All Might mask! 1/2 of the whole!)
Tumblr media
“From now on, Deku is the name of my hero!” Once again that trio of foil-y ness between Deku, Kacchan and Uraraka. I wonder if it’s a relic of when the series was originally gonna be them as a trio, a la Naruto/Harry Potter/etc, so they were designed to all foil each other in some way? It’s not as much in the series proper, but it’s interesting nonetheless. Also, You Say Run! Down the bottle! (3rd episode in a row).
In sum, I love this episode. Costumes! All Might teaching! The Battle Trial Arc! Bakugou being crazy (I mostly gush over Deku a lot, but I love Kacchan too. Crater-sized faults and all). And of course, all of the...
BKDK Corner:
Tumblr media
Cute flashbacks! Adorable flashbacks are adorable. Little Bakugou is so arrogant; if he was an adult he would be insufferable, but because he’s just a kid it’s cute.
Tumblr media
Now to get into a little analysis! This ep marks the first time we actually delve into the depths of Bakugou’s psyche, and basically to sum it up: He’s scared of Deku because he deep down knows that Deku is better than him, fearing that Deku will surpass him, and doesn’t understand why. It’s amazing how the characters introduced at this part of the series as simple archetypes (relatable hero, bully, nice girl, uptight boy) become so complex as the series goes on. Not to be taken at face value.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Uraraka changing the meaning of Deku is another moment that parallels the Deku/Kacchan and Deku/Ochaco dynamics. Again, I’m not sure what that means in the long run, only that paralleling Izuku’s romance subplot with his main rivalry has interesting implications.
Tumblr media
“So, you know Bakugou? He’s kind of mean to you, right?” ‘“Yes but he’s also super amazing special awesome and cool and did I mention amazing? Let me present my eighty page thesis to you on why Kacchan is cool.” OK, exaggerating. But it is interesting how much Deku admires and looks up to Kacchan despite him being such a jerk, so seemingly the opposite of what Deku wants to be as a hero. Basic 2 sides/same coin stuff, of course. Kacchan has all the self-assurance, power and pride that Deku lacks (at least at this point).
Tumblr media
Deku speaks fluent Kacchan and predicted exactly what he would do. He knows his S/O so well.
Tumblr media
“I took notes on all amazing heroes, including you” Subtle, Deku. Wanna make your crush a little more obvious? (also check out the BNHA smash comic of this, where he takes it up a notch and reveals what a full-blown stalker he actually is).
Tumblr media
This is definitely their lowpoint of antagonism, though. This early part of the series, where they’re both mad at each other. I do think that Deku never really hated Bakugou, though; he hates things about him, but not him as a person. (Deku is way too forgiving.)  Bakugou hated him, but I think that’s fading away in the current timeline (so weird, the last time we saw these two in the manga they were chilling on a couch together and drinking tea. Such a crazy contrast with rewatching this!)
Best Girl of the Episode: Kyoka Jiro!
Tumblr media
more info on her: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7FVXWFFm4w&t=481s
Ranker: Favorite Hero Costumes
5. Nejire Hado’s!
I’m not sure why, but she has one of my favorite costumes of the whole series. it looks so good on her, it’s simple and tells you who she is.
4. Izuku Midoriya’s (3.0)!
Deku’s third costume is amazing and looks cool. It’s sleek and powerful and badass, somehow taking that dopey baseline design and turning it awesome.
3. Camie Utsushimi’s!
It’s so simple yet so great. Bodysuit, white boots and that awesome Shiketsu hat. Yet it works. It looks cool, even with the boob window.
2. Katsuki Bakugo’s!
It’s so ridiculous and yet so perfect. Exactly what you’d expect Bakugo to design for his outfit. Keeping in character and suitably dark.
1. Ochaco Uraraka’s!
My favorite in the whole bunch. It looks so much like a space heroine super suit - I especially like it with the helmet. It’s all there for her quirk, too - there’s an explanation behind each piece of gear. (BTW, Bakugou and Uraraka had the same designer. They really lucked out!)

Thinking about Fates and Awakening, I’ve noticed that quite a lot of people think that the Corrins are Mary Sues, but I haven’t seen much of that sentiment aimed at the Robins, or at least not as much. Heavy spoilers for both games, btw.
The things people tend to take exemption about the Corrins seem to be that they are the child of a dragon god, that everyone automatically loves them, and that the entire plot revolves around Corrin. And it’s funny to me because Robin is probably much more overpowered and luckier than Corrin is. Compared to Corrin, Robin has stronger plot armor too.
Corrin may be the child of a dragon god, but Robin IS a dragon god of ruin and death incarnate, and the fate of the world depends on whether or not Robin manages to resist turning into the dragon. And not only Robin is the only one able to destroy the dragon for good, but they are able to come back to life after sacrificing themself to do it. And they managed to survive anyway, without apparent repercusions or sideffects, because of their strong bonds with their friends and allies. Hell, the dragon goddess sent people to the past to stop Robin from becoming Grima and killing Chrom. All the divine intervention Corrin gets is a sword upgrade and arguably My Castle and the Babyrealms, and those don’t really have an effect on the plot. You can finish Fates without ever touching My Castle or getting the child units, but Lucina and her friends travelling in time to save Chrom and Robin is integral to the plot of Awakening.
On the other hand, Corrin never learns the truth about Anankos, and depending on the route, probably thinks that their weird dragon thing is something that happens because they are related to the Hoshidan family, who are the descendants of a dragon (Conquest), knows that Mikoto was a Vallite princess and thinks they are descended from Anankos in the same way Azura is (Revelations) or is just forever confused about where their Dragon Vein and Dragon transformation abilities came from, since Hinoka admits to their face that they are adopted in their support conversation, and way before the S rank (Birthright).
Robin is also way smarter than Corrin and has more agency in the plot, since Corrin leaves decision making to the elder brother of the family they have chosen to support, or Azura. And Leo says in their support that Corrin is actually pretty bad at tactics, at least at the beginning.
Another complaint is that everyone loves Corrin inconditionally and automatically, and sure, a lot of characters start out in good terms with Corrin, but there are some that can’t stand them and Corrin is unable to mend the brunt bridges or persuade them. The ones that love Corrin unconditionally are the family they choose to support in chapter 6, Jakob, Felicia and Silas. And of those, Silas is the only one of those whose main character trait is “I just LOVE Corrin, my BFF, so fucking much, they are the BEST”. But, from the top of my head, Takumi and Saizo couldn’t stand Corrin and/or distrusted them at the beginning, even after choosing birthright. So does Iago, even after choosing Nohr. And Flora and arguably Gunter, two people so close to Corrin that Corrin considers them family, secretly resented Corrin and betrayed them.
That doesn’t happen with Robin, because pretty much every character in Awakening LOVES Robin (or needs them to bring their evil dragon god to life, which makes them IMPORTANT). The only ones I remember that started out on bad terms with Robin were Frederick in the plot, and he warmed up the them pretty quickly, and Aversa with F!Robin, and that was because she wanted to steal f!Robin’s position.
And if we are talking mechanics, Robin (and most Awakening characters but especially Robin and their children) are so broken it’s hilarious. Robin has access to every single class in the game (except the ones locked to the gender you don’t choose, or to species aka Manakete and Taguel) and, thanks to the second seals, can master all of them, max every stat, and get every skill. Corrin has hoshidan/nohrian noble as a main class, a heart seal class, a friendship class and a husband/wife class, like every other character in Fates. The things Corrin has over Robin are the Yato and the Manakete shifting, but my Robins have always ended up more powerful than my Corrins simply because of Robin’s infinite customization options.
But I think the difference between how Robin and Chrom are perceived and how orrin and Azura are actually has a lot to do with their roles switching. In Awakening, Chrom is the main Lord, and most of the important game choices revolve around him. Robin, on the other hand, is a mysterious character with ties to the final dragon boss that the lord has sworn to protect, much like Ninian and Nils were in FE7. The war with Plegia and Gangrel was all about Chrom and his family, with Robin taking a secondary role and learning a bit about some mysterious ties they have with a creepy cult, but the emphasis is pretty much entirely on Chrom. Robin begins to gain importance in the Valm arc as the Grimleal start playing their cards, but Chrom shares the spotlight thanks to being Walhart’s foil. And in the Grima arc, there is as much emphasis on Chrom NOT DYING as there is in with Robin not becoming Grima.
While in Fates, Corrin is both the players’ customizable avatar and the main lord of the game, with Azura taking the Mysterious Character role. So of course most of the game revolves around Corrin’s quest, Corrin is the main Lord of Fates just like Chrom was in Awakening. Anyway, Corrin may not be the best written character, but I think they get more hate than they actually deserve when there are other characters that are as OP and plot important as Corrin is in Fates that are loved by the fandom.

Hey boys and girls I’m back with more Bakudeku role-reversal talk (BTWs all and future posts regarding the AU will be put under the tag “Bakugou No Hero Academia AU” for ease with searching)
So last time we left off on the end of the Hero/Villain exams, so now it’s on to the Lunch incident
All Might tries to encourage Katsuki to try clearing the air with his classmate - he is stuck with them for three years after all, and it would do well to start making allies he can rely on in his career as a hero
Which is easier said than done, as Katsuki has currently learned that trying to murder your childhood friend during a class sanctioned test over feelings with your recently obtained smashy powers kind of makes people terrified of you (And also not like you a whole bunch but that’s neither here nor there), and them being terrified kind of makes them not want to sit with you at lunch.
He also learns that the apparent so-called murder attempt doesn’t stop said childhood friend from trying to invite you to eat with him and his new friends, because apparently he’s not only just a nerd, but a nerd with a death wish! (or at least that how Katsuki and a good 90% of the school sees it)
It’s a awkward, unfun time for everyone. No one can really talk to Katsuki and Katsuki doesn’t really want to talk with anyone. Attempts end with tense weird pauses or death threats. Izuku ends up filling the air with meaningless chatter because dear lord it’s so freaking awkward and they all know it but they can’t do anything about it because it’s so awkward. No one there really wants to admit they felt the break in by the paparazzi was a godsend.
The only real positive outcome of the incident is that Katsuki sort of becomes semi-antifriends with Ochako (no one is sure how it works, but it worked)
Enter: the USJ Villain attack
Again, Match ups are still somewhat the same except -
Uraraka ends up with Kirishima and Katsuki, and Tokoyami ends up with Izuku’s group I’m a sucker for Tokoyami based friendships okay!?
Izuku’s group escape from the sea disaster zone is radically different since Izuku doesn’t have One for All
Katsuki’s crew ends up going through the building disaster area a lot quicker (Gravity-Harding-Bakugou combo does wonders on evil villains trying to kill high schoolers) and end up running into Todoroki
Katsuki’s smart enough to realize Kurogiri needs taking out first and has Kirishima get on that
And that’s where everything kind of goes to hell because Tomura
Ochako floats Noumu what do you mean that makes no sense and I’m just trying to reference that one sketch Horikoshi did it doesn’t really work but she did it kind of
Katsuki almost loses his arm punching Tomura because for a frail skinny weirdo with pealing skin he can actually take a punch pretty well (that and Noumu got in the way of the first one)
They’re honestly pretty lucky All Might shows up when he does and that Izuku’s group come in at the right time to act as back up (Katsuki on his part is accepting of the help, but very openly bitter about it)
Izuku actually dunks Tomura in the water with his Quirk trying to help Katsuki and the others get away from him (Tomura will remember that)
He also accidentally sees All Might’s real form after the Noumu fight. Neither All Might or Bakugou notice, but his awkwardness towards him later on afterwards makes Katsuki suspicious
The entire thought process over the discovery is horrifying to him because he keeps thinking about is he fake and no it was definitely him and how is he maintaining that form for classes and how he must have to take breaks and is that why the slime villain got away from him and he must have pushed himself during the villain attack to suddenly change back and the villains must have known or they wouldn’t have done all this anyways and does anyone else know and does Kacchan know and is that why he seemed so interested in him on the first day and is always dragging him off to his office and is that why he didn’t show up on site and oh god he knows All Might’s darkest secret now?!?!?!?!?!?
(With the changes in the lineup some kids do end up getting badly injured and 13 gets put out of commission for a good while)
SPORTSFESTIVALARCSPORTSFESTIVALARCSPORTSFESTIVALARC
(or “Katsuki learns he needs to take a chill pill pt.2″)
The entire USJ Incident and seeing All Mights fight with Noumu kind of puts having One For All into perspective for Bakugou because he kind of realizes at this point he can’t rely on the power for everything
He’s also maybe a little frustrated he couldn’t help out with the fight the way he wanted (or at least not have to be save by Toshinori and Deku again) and anxious that should he screw up again All Might might not want him as a successor anymore lose more time as the pillar having to help him out again
Toshinori on his part at least tries to discourage Katsuki from taking the incident too personally and tells him to focus on school and the upcoming sports festival - which Katsuki takes as serious as a heart attack and makes his ultimate goal to win EVERYTHING
Izuku meanwhile is panicked and stressed out because the entire USJ incident was just a huge reminder of how unprepared and unsuited he and his quirk are for combat. There’s also having to fight against his friends (which he’s ultimately iffy about because they’re his friends) in the festival and KNOWING ALL MIGHT IS ACTUALLY FAKING BEING SUPER STRONG AND IS (maybe) MOST LIKELY DYING AND NOT BEING ABLE TO ASK ABOUT IT OR TELL ANYONE!!!! Poor kid’s too freaked out to even approach All Might about his doubts in participating
And it shows - Katsuki knows he knows something. He’s not sure what, but he knows...
Izuku is chosen to give the speech because if there’s any way of undoing any of the damage Bakugou’s initial attitude and their sudden popularity from USJ incident has done on Class 1-A’s reputation it’s Izuku (and he lost rock-paper-scissors)
He actually manages to do an okay job and tells everyone to do their best. Ain’t nobody can be mad about that.
Todoroki ends up getting first place in the race (Katsuki would have gotten it had he not spent what was left of it trying to make sure Izuku gets third
The calvary race ends with Todoroki’s win again, only Izuku ends up putting Bakugou in fifth by using his quirk to steal away some of his  headbands
Monoma vs Izuku is hilariously anticlimactic because Monoma steals their headband, starts bragging and saying how much Class A sucks and then Izuku just...steals it back with his quirk and is basically like “Well...it was nice meeting you. Good bye.” and leaves and Monoma just stands there for a good few minutes before pretty much running after going “How dare you! You get back here and listen to me disparage you and your classmate properly!”
Now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for - The Tournament
Poor Shinsou, instead of a heartfelt talk he just gets punched out of the ring (But Izuku does still talk to him afterwards so it all good~! I’m sorry I’m Shinsou biased)
Ochako VS Deku  is less super end-of-the-world tense like it’s counterpart and more “You’re my friend but I’m wining this thing so I still have to kind of destroy you but we’re still cool!”
On the one hand, Bakugou “I don’t have time for your daddy issues” Katsuki facing off against Todoroki with One For All results in Todoroki not unlocking his fire side and what should be an easy victory. On the other hand, Bakugou “Use your goddamn fire side already I want an actual legitimate win against you” Katsuki facing off against Todoroki with One For All would also likely result in a lot of hurt feelings, hurt bones, and Katsuki losing due to his dissatisfaction not playing nice with his desire to win and thus tripping him up at crucial moments in the match.
Izuku does pretty well despite the disadvantages of his quirk because the kid is smart and has spent enough time watching everyone’s fights/quirk use to aid him in match ups, but I ultimately see him losing his fight with Kirishima realistically
And even if he were to win that and the next match and end up facing Todoroki, Izuku still would have ended the same as in canon since he still has his desire to help others
However, if, by some measure of miracle/fate/hero magic/whatever Izuku did end up in first place it’d be...hilariously ironic in AU-Verse as Izuku would basically be the dark horse to beat all dark horses. Like I love the kid but his quirk in this version of canon is basically a very weak/subtle version of telekinesis, forcing most of his battles to be hit-and-run tactic based - Outside of friends and maybe Aizawa, no one would see it coming. The fact of him managing to get into the top 4 was a stretch in itself and struggled for; getting first place is just-wow. Even All Might is shook.
Katsuki is disturbingly...quiet about his not getting first place. I’m mean he’s still his lovable angry foul-mouthed self but he doesn’t really harp on it as much as people expected. They’re honestly a bit terrified at it either meaning he’s quietly seething about the loss or is bottling it all up for an ultimate explosion of anger and rage (Or maybe both). The entire thing’s pretty much flipped his perspective on both his abilities and his classmates, and at the moment he’s just stewing on what to do to catch up with everyone
Izuku is equally quiet for different reasons, as his win/loss and the entire tournament has made him kind of realize he might have to reevaluate both his approach to heroing and his motives. (Of course no Toshinori as a mentor = Izuku not immediately realizing constantly acting like you have a death wish to help people might not be the best way to handle things)
And once again we are done - thanks for reading!
