OC-tober 6: Heng Wanxue

Week 1: OCs from the Lin Moniao series, which grew out of playing the wuxia RP Righteous Blood, Ruthless Blades with Minutia-R.

This is really a shared OC, since I have played her but she was created from a list of questions that Minutia answered. Am I writing fanfic for Minutia's OC? Who knows? Maybe!

Born to a couple of street merchants who made and sold toys and trinkets, Heng Wanxue grew up hanging around markets. When her father lost the use of his right hand after he was caught thieving and was attacked, he couldn't craft toys anymore, and the family fell on harder times. Then a young teenager, Wanxue took took a job as a courtesan at a cheap brothel to help with the family income. She had very little in the way of poetry, learning or talent, but she was cheerful and pretty, and made the customers feel special, which was the main thing, and so she did well.

She also took up alternate, less honourable methods of earning money, namely burglaries and pickpocketing off the clock. Around this time, too, she fell in love with a pretty boy in the neighbourhood, but he and his mother moved away in the hopes of a better future. Wanxue would have followed, but the brothel madam put his foot down--she couldn't afford to lose a girl.

How she eventually left, and how she ended up with the ugly scar on her face, is another story, and not one she shares the truth of.

Though now less marketable, she was still young, and now a full-time thief, so she caught the eye of Tree Frog Gao, the Queen of Beggars. Master Gao trained her up as a fighter in exchange for loyalty to her network. Heng Wanxue is mostly a free agent, but if her master wants something from her, she cannot lightly refuse. She still keeps tabs on her family, and Tree Frog Gao, too, makes sure they are provided for.

AAAHHH you are working on another Reeves fic?! *squeals* May I inquire about that one, pls? (Also, OMG a Blue and Bud crossover?!)

Hi Chrissie! 💜 Okay, so yeah. That Reeves fic has been hanging around for almost a YEAR and it originally wasn't even Reeves. And then I realized it would make more sense to use Reeves, but then I was having trouble getting it to cooperate with me. I feel more comfortable with the character now, and I will probably try to give it another shot, especially since my other Reeves story was pretty well received! It's based on some music-related things that happened to me in my 20s, and I just now realized that it does, ironically, have a parking lot scene. 😂

And uh, we can call the other one a crossover. Yeah. We can also sort of call it a crossover, I guess? And yes that probably means exactly what you think it means...

Rubies, the birthstone of July, are considered the king of gems and represent love, health, and wisdom. It was believed wearing a fine red ruby jewellery bestowed good fortune on its owner. A ruby is the most valuable gemstone and its value increases based on its colour and quality

Alan Caplan Ruby

Named after Alan Caplan, a famous mineralogist and gemstone dealer who acquired the stone in Burma. This stone is also known as “Mogok Ruby”, derived from the source of this fine gemstone. This 15.97 carats Burmese stone was sold by Sotheby’s in New York for $3,630,000 per carat of $227,301 on October 18, 1988.

The Carmen Lúcia Ruby

One of the finest and largest faceted Burmese rubies known. The stone was also mined from the prominent Mogok region of Burma in the 1930s.

This natural ruby possesses a combination of outstanding characteristics. Aside from its massive size, this extraordinary gemstone displays a richly saturated homogenous red color, combined with an exceptional degree of transparency. The Carmen Lúcia Ruby is nowadays mounted in a platinum ring with 2 triangular-cut diamonds totalling 2.38 carats. This magnificent ruby was a gift to the Smithsonian and the people of the United States in 2004. It was a gift from Dr. Peter Buck, in memory of his wife, Brazilian Carmen Lúcia Buck. She was known for her love for the United States, devotion to children, and appreciation for fine jewellery. The Carmen Lúcia Ruby is on display in the Gem Gallery at the National Museum of Natural History.

De Long Star Ruby

Remarkable star ruby, also Burmese origin can be found at the Natural History Museum in the New York City. This gorgeous vivid purplish-red ruby weighs 100.32 carats and has an eye-catching 6-rayed star effect. The DeLong Star Ruby receives its name from Mrs. Edith Haggin de Long. She purchased the stone in 1937 from Martin Leo Ehrmann, the renowned gemstone and mineral collector, and dealer. He traveled worldwide in search of rare and expensive gems and minerals, building up an extensive collection of unique minerals. Mrs. Edith Haggin de Long later donated the extraordinary orchid-red star ruby to the American Museum of Natural History. The gemstone was named the De Long Star Ruby in her memory.

In 1964 the Delong Star Ruby was the object of a scandalous burglary, carried out by Jack Murphy, known as the Surf and two accomplices. It was then ransomed and recovered. The De Long Star was found at a designated drop off site – a phone booth in Florida.

The Sunrise Ruby

In May 2015, a new gemstone auction record was set by a most expensive ruby. It is a 25.59-carat “pigeon blood” red Burmese ruby, which is set into a Cartier ring and flanked by white diamonds. A Swiss buyer paid $30 million for the ruby gemstone (over $1 million per carat). The Sunrise Ruby was assessed by the Gubelin Gem Lab in Zurich, where it was concluded that the jewel has a vivid “pigeon blood” red and of rare quality. The colour Pigeon Blood Ruby red is not associated with the hue of a bird’s blood but rather the colour of a white pigeon’s eye.

The Sunrise Beauty has extraordinarily fine tone and purity and a well-balanced cut rare in rubies of this size. The Global Chairman of Sotheby’s said that in all his 40 years in the business, he has, “not once observed a ruby of this calibre.” It bears its name from a poem by Rumi, the 13th-century Sufi mystic.

The Nawata Ruby

Which was found in 1990 is an exceptional ruby gemstone that weighs 496.5 carats and is a national treasure of the Union of Myanmar. It is also called SLORC Ruby (State Law and Order Restoration Committee). This exceptional gem has an extraordinary story behind it:

The Nawata Ruby was found at Dattaw in the Mogok mining area of Burma. According to the book “Fire and Blood” by Diane Morgan and other accounts in newspapers, it was found by Than Htun, the owner of a brothel in Mandalay. He smuggled the ruby to Thailand and unsuccessfully tried to sell it for 2 billion dollars. One of the Thai buyers tipped the military junta in Burma, who then sent agents to recover the stone and the miners. Than Htun was then executed or sentenced to life in prison.

The Hixon Ruby

One of the collection’s best-known specimens. The 196.10 carats crystal was donated in 1978 to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles by Colonel Frederick Hixon. It is considered to be one of the most perfect large ruby crystals discovered to date.

The Rosser Reeves Ruby

The legendary Sri Lankan star ruby is one of the finest and largest rubies of the world. The gem weighs in at 138.7 carats, and it is prized for its brilliant colour and its distinct star pattern. The Rosser Reeves Ruby is named after its owner, who carried the ruby around for good luck referring to it as “my baby.” Before donating the gemstone to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC, in 1965. Rosser Reeves was an American advertising executive who wrote “Reality in Advertising” and was responsible for the “Unique Selling Proposition” or USP. The qualities which make it a fine gemstone are its translucency, colour and centrally aligned, well-defined star.

The Graff Ruby

A well-known cushion cut Burmese ruby with a weight of 8.62 carats. The Graff Ruby, an 8.62-carat Pigeon’s Blood Burmese ruby – widely celebrated as the most valuable ruby in the world – is a once in a lifetime discovery. Effortlessly complemented by brilliant cut white diamond shoulder stones the bewitching Pigeon’s Blood shade of red is phenomenally striking. One of the most important ruby gemstones that Graff has ever created, this is a historic jewel with a remarkable legacy. In February 2006. It was bought by a famous and credited London diamond and gemstone dealer and luxury jeweller Laurence Graff, known as the King of Diamonds. Graff paid a $3,637,480.00 at Christie’s.

It was a new record price per carat of $421, 981. He had named the gemstone the “Graff Ruby”. After that, he sold the ruby to a Greek financier Dimitri Mavrommatis, but realising his mistake, he changed his mind and bought the 8.62 carat gem for the second time in 2014. He paid 8.2 million Swiss francs ($8.6 million) for the Burmese ruby, at a Geneva auction.

The Timur Ruby

The Timur Ruby is one of the most historically significant jewels the Queen owns. It weighs whooping 352.5-carats and until 1851, it was regarded as the largest known ruby in the world. Then it was discovered to be a spinel, and not a ruby and is currently ranked as second in size behind the 398.72 carat spinel in the Imperial Russian Crown. The stone, or the necklace it is currently mounted into, has never actually been worn by any British Royal.

The spinel takes its name after the great Asian conqueror Timur (or Tamerlane). After Tamerlane, the stone was inherited by his son Shah Rukh and by Shah Rukh’s son Ulugh Beg. During the latter’s reign, there were many wars with the Persians and at some point, the ruby fell into the possession of Shah Abbas I of Persia, who in 1612 gave it to his close friend Jahangir, the Mughal Emperor of India. It was Jahangir who was the first (presumably, after Timur) to engrave an inscription on the stone. Legend has it that when Jahangir ordered to inscribe the stone with his name and that of his father, his favourite wife scolded him for defacing such a unique gem, to which Jahangir replied: “This jewel will more certainly hand down my name to posterity than any written history. The House of Timur may fall, but as long as there is a King, this jewel will be his.”

In 1738, the increasingly weakening Mughal Empire was conquered by Nader Shah, the Shah of Iran and founder of the Afshand dynasty. After defeating the Mughal army at the epic Battle of Karnal on 13 February 1739, Nader captured Mohammad Shah and entered with him into Delhi. Nader Shah agreed to withdraw but only if Mohammad Shah handed him the keys to the Royal Treasury. Nader thoroughly looted the treasury and the Mughal Empire lost not only some of its greatest gems – the Timur Ruby, Koh-i-Noor, Darya-ye-Noor – but also the Peacock Throne, which thereafter served as a symbol of the might of the Persian Empire. The Timur Ruby didn’t remain in Persia for long; when the Punjab was annexed by the British East India Company in 1849, all the State jewels came under the jurisdiction of a Board of Administration. In recognition of the Queen’s patronage of the Exhibition, the Directors of the East India Company presented her the Timur Ruby.

In April 1853 Garrards set four of these rubies in a new diamond-encrusted gold and enamel necklace. The centrepiece of the necklace was the Timur Ruby. Despite all these changes, and a further change made on Queen Mary’s orders some time later, the necklace has never actually been worn.

Black Prince’s Ruby

A large red gem set in the Maltese cross in the front of the imperial state crown of England. It is not a ruby but is one of the world’s largest gem-quality red spinels, a polished lump 5 cm (2 inches) long, pierced and partly filled with a small ruby. The stone was given to Edward the Black Prince by Pedro the Cruel, king of Castile, on the victory of Nájera in 1367. It narrowly escaped destruction when Henry V wore it at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415.

Fine red spinel is actually considered to be rarer than ruby in occurrence and can often be even more valuable. The Black Prince’s Ruby is the one of the world’s largest uncut red spinel gems, with an estimated weight of 170 carats and a length of almost 5 centimetres. The Black Prince’s Ruby is slightly polished to bring out its luster and has been worked into a bead shape. It was previously drilled, strung and worn as a pendant and various other forms of jewellery before being placed in the Imperial Crown where it can be seen today. Through close observation, it can be seen that the small drilled hole has been plugged with a smaller ruby.

For most of time, all red transparent gemstones were simply thought to be ‘rubies’, which is why the royal gem was thought to be a ruby for centuries. It was only through the technological advancement of mineral studies that the Black Prince’s Spinel was actually discovered to be red spinel. Spinel and ruby do share many similar physical traits, but ruby (corundum) can be distinguished based on its hardness and density. Ruby is slightly harder and denser than spinel. Ruby is also dichroic like most other gemstones, whereas spinel is singly refractive; an optical property that is actually quite rare and a trait found only in a few well-known gem types, including diamond and garnet.

The Black Prince’s Ruby was originally believed to have belonged to Prince Abu Sa'id of the Moorish Kingdom of Granada sometime during the 14th century. It was thought to have been mined somewere from present-day Tajikistan, which was then known as Badakshan. At that time, Don Pedro the Cruel, ruler of Castile, was overtaking Granada, the last Muslim outpost in Spain, as part of his Christian Reconquest. During this time, the rule of Castile was being centralised to Spain. According to historical records, Prince Sa'id was planning to surrender to King Don Pedro, but Pedro had other plans, which earned him his 'Cruel’ nickname.

Don Pedro welcomed Prince Abu Sa'id and his servants to Seville to discuss the terms of his surrender, but the Moorish Prince’s servants were killed and Don Pedro may have personally stabbed Abu Sa'id. Don Pedro acquired Abu Sa'id’s wealth upon his death, and after searching his body, Don Pedro discovered the large red gemstone and added it to his own possessions. It is said that the gruesome murder of the Prince sparked a curse that would follow Don Pedro from that day on. The curse was said to have brought misfortune or even death to those who owned the “Black Prince’s Ruby”.

Shortly after Don Pedro acquired the gem from Abu Sa'id, his half-brother, Henry of Trastamara declared war on Castile for the right to rule. The revolt led Don Pedro to forge an alliance with Prince Edward III, known as 'the Black Prince’ of England. Edward was a great knight, but during medieval times, even great knights were in war for profits and not just chivalry. The Black Prince successfully defeated Henry of Trastamara, and promptly demanded the gemstone from Don Pedro as payment in exchange for his alliance. The Black Prince brought the jewel back to England where it has remained ever since, although it has not been mentioned in recorded history since some time around the 1400s.

Things to Know: Coriander Bride-Stealer

Nymphadora met Cora along the road to a plague-stricken city that the two were coincidentally both heading to to lend aid. Cora had been cursed by the mother of a prince, and was suffering terribly from wounds the curse was inflicting. Adora was happy to break the curse (‘this is truly amateur work, my pretty’), and Cora insisted that she was indebted to Adora, swearing a paladin’s oath to serve her.

Adora likes Coriander, though she admits the eager young half-elf can be...a bit much sometimes. Her heart’s in the right place, she just needs a little wisdom from time to time, and Adora is resplendent with worldly lessons.

Coriander has a Belt of Storm Giant’s Strength that she wear constantly, making her quite formidable in a fight, and very useful when heavy lifting needs to be done. Some of the Miscreants have tried using the belt for themselves, either to win a contest of strength or help them with a particularly nasty burglary job. However, it refuses to work for them, as if the belt itself literally refuses to work for anyone but Cora, or so it seems. Most of the party has yet to realize that the belt will only grant it’s strength to those performing good deeds or feats of honorable valor (‘It always works for Cora! Is there an off switch? Does she have some sort of key? Maybe it only works in sunlight…’)

Cora has needed time adjusting to her new friends (‘Wait, so Drow don’t eat children? But the sisters told me all these scary stories!”) and over time has warmed to this bizarre crew she travels with. It’s also helpful that Adora has quite a talent for working around many of Coriander’s vows

‘Yes, love, what they want to do is evil, but wouldn’t a knight like yourself want them to learn from their evil ways? People need to make mistakes before they can learn from them. Wouldn’t you prefer being there to keep them safe and guide them away from their baser instincts?’ ‘Huh, you know I guess you’re right! Thanks, Lady Adora!’

She’s precious

Still receives letters from the princess she helped escape marrying a prince, but since she can’t actually read she relies on the party to read them to her and help her write letters in response. She prefers Ol’ Banjo to help her with this, since hearing Lady Adora read to her ‘makes [coriander] feel things that I can’t quite describe, my head feels light, and my heart starts to race. I think I need to lie down for a moment. I hope I’m not ill...’

‘A brothel? Like a broth-house? Do they sell soup? I hope they do, I’m famished!’

‘These ladies seem quite friendly, and rather eager to disrobe both themselves and myself! Am I unclean? Do I need to bathe? I could have sworn I bathed just the other day!’

She has a lot of stuff to figure out

Hates bards. There’s a popular song that mentions her by name called ‘The Paladin Thief’ about her encounter with the princess, and it does not have nice things to say about her. She suspects that the mother of the prince was the one who started the song, but she doesn’t really have any proof, just a hunch.

Acts as Nymphadora’s personal bodyguard alongside Lump the Gnoll, and many a would-be assailant have experienced Cora’s terrifying strength firsthand

Day 11 — Ari Shadowblood

Ari, one of the thieves working for the Frateria in Callan (the capital of Eomar). Born from a human prostitute and a travelling Kellenin, she was brought up in the brothel, then ran away after her mother died. Since she was too easily recognisable as a half-Kellenin (her skin has a characteristic slight blueish hue, not to mention her black hair, purple eyes and pointy ears), which owed her the nickname of “Shadowblood”, she couldn’t find gainful employment; pursuing the same trade as her mother would’ve attracted the more “exotic” requests for her, and that was something she definitely didn’t want, so she struck a deal with Agas Black Hand, the leader of the Frateria (the local thieves’ guild), and started working for him as a street thief. Later, with more experience, she graduated to burglary jobs.

She met Kheril, Ido and Iswann on their first diplomatic mission, when they were sent to discuss a potential treaty with Archbishop Averen—and after she started tripping over clues of an assassination conspiracy that landed her in all sorts of trouble.

Ari is skilled with thrown daggers, and is good pals with a swordsman named Domio, who regularly complains about her talent to get into trouble (see above), but nevertheless helps her when she needs more muscle for a job. She also has a healthy rivalry with demi-mondaine Shania (who acts as insider and relays information useful to planning burglaries later on).

But the question remains: “Is [it] going to make him wake up and smell the coffee and realize that, you know, is it time to do something about [his feelings for Eliza]?”

Kate Phillips (Eliza) : According to the leading lady of the series, there will be “more about Eliza and William’s history [and] how they came to be.” Plus, “There’ll definitely be some more fun characters for you to meet that are really great and you’ll just love them. And more sparring and back and forth than ever!” As for Eliza’s new job: “Nash & Sons allows her to meet lots of new people. She’s always looking to get one step ahead so the more people she meets, the more opportunities she has.”

Stuart Martin (The Duke): “There’s a lot of revelations, a lot of the emotional stories are really pushed and tested,” Martin teased. “We get to see Eliza and Duke really move forward in their relationship.”

Felix Scott (Nash): “Eliza and Nash get into a lot of trouble. New and Returning Cast of Miss Scarlet and The Duke Season 4

Kate Phillips (The Crown, Peaky Blinders) and Stuart Martin (Jamestown, Army of Thieves) are back as the dynamic, head-butting duo Eliza Scarlet and William “The Duke” Wellington, respectively. Also returning in Season 4 are Felix Scott (The Crown) as the devious Patrick Nash; Cathy Belton (Philomena) as the ever kind and supportive Ivy Woods; Evan McCabe (Doctor Who) as the Duke’s unofficial mentee Detective Oliver Fitzroy; Simon Ludders (Bridgerton) as the high-strung Mr. Potts (though much less high strung around his love, Ivy); and Tim Chipping (EastEnders) as the tough and occasionally shifty Detective Phelps.

Plus, this season welcomes a couple of new faces to the scene: Paul Bazely (Black Mirror) — who also will appear in an episode of All Creatures Great and Small Season 4! — and Curtis Kantsa (The Sandman).

SELINA KYLE WAS BORN IN GOTHAM CENTRAL HOSPITAL to Maria Kyle (née Oliveira), age twenty-one, and Brian Kyle, age twenty-three, in 1980. Her mother had immigrated from Porto Alegre, Brazil to Gotham City when she was nineteen. She eventually got caught up in the sex scene, working the streets at night while working the bodega during the day. One of her most loyal and infatuated clients was Brian Kyle, the son of a rich Irish family, and the future (alleged) father of her child.

When Maria came to him about the pregnancy, his parents tried to get her to end it; they didn’t want his son involved with “those brown people”. Knowing that Maria wouldn’t, and wanting to raise his daughter, Brian was left with no choice but to marry her and be disowned by his family, reducing the two of them to live in the housing projects of the East End.

Their household was rocky from the start, whatever love having existed between her parents being all but gone by the time she was a year old. The small family hit financial troubles with a long recession that began when Selina was four and ended when she turned nine. During this time, tensions rose in the Kyle family, marred by screams, racist condescensions, and broken beer bottles. Three years after Selina, Maria had her second daughter, Magdalena, which only worsened their financial situation. Plagued by PPD, her mother became estranged from her emotionally and would leave for months without a trace, only to be dragged back and beat by her husband. One day, when Selina was five, Maria managed to leave and never come back. Now the sole guardian of his two daughters and working odd jobs in the middle of an economic recession, Brian comforted himself with alcohol and anger.

Selina would hide a baby Maggie in their closet and take the brunt of the violence he dealt. None of their neighbors ever reported anything because they were afraid of the cops coming in. Selina would take out her anger in gymnastics (it also gave her a good excuse for the bruises and cuts), but she could never pay attention in school and she would always lash out at the other kids.

One day, when she was seven, her father finally drank himself to death. Selina packed a bag and took Maggie with her, before eventually being found by the GCPD and taken to the Thomas and Martha Wayne Home for the Boys and Girls of Gotham. Maggie, who was younger, less angry, and less bruised, was adopted almost immediately. Selina, on the other hand, was not as cooperative in the orphanage and was sent to a juvenile delinquent facility where she was abused by the director. She was often isolated from the other girls, but entertained herself with breaking in and out of rooms and practicing her gymnastics on the roof. One night she discovered the director was laundering money and threatened to alert the authorities. The director kidnapped Selina and threw her in a bag into the river with the intent of killing her. Selina was able to escape and returned to the director, telling her she’d be spared if she destroyed any document trace of Selina Kyle’s existence. Once she got what she wanted, Selina called the police anyway.

She was thirteen now, living on the streets. She would squat in abandoned buildings, dumpster dive, and pickpocket to survive, going to school mostly for the free lunch. When she was fifteen, she got her first job working at the same bodega her mother used to. And when she was seventeen, she started training with Ted Grant on hand-to-hand combat and a multiplicity of other fighting styles, as well as honing her gymnastic skills.

During this time, she would test her abilities with greater and greater heists. She would pretend to work for her then-boyfriend, Stan (a brothel keeper), by drugging her clients and taking that time to steal, using them as alibis if she ever became a suspect. Gotham was ravaged by the number of large-scale burglaries done by one ‘Cat’ burglar, though her breadth became larger and larger each month. By the time she was twenty one, she had already made a name for herself in the international criminal arena as the Cat.
