idk the essay and I adore george but for the life of me idk how anybody could have thought he has a posh accent 😭😭

i actually went and found it because i want it on my blog—linguistics is fascinating! this is the proper essay i was thinking of (and then google also turned up this one on similar lines). but yeah i agree with the first author (who has a whole "george russell thesis" character-study tag) that i, as an ignorant american, absolutely got suckered in by his prissy/old-fashioned language ("ah, sugar!") and overall consciously wealthy self-presentation, to the point that it obscured the actual evidence my ears were hearing. he just LOOKS the part so much that it took me reading that first one to hear all the dropped G's and "we was"-es, but once i did i could never unhear them. so i'll chalk that up to the power of styling and visuals and tropes, because i absolutely was fooled for a bit 😅

Incase people are curious about my stance on the British accent mocking I genuinely just unfollowed someone who did it constantly. The reason we're actually really sensitive to it is because of stuff that I think feels culturally instinctive to us but isn't clear world wide. But accents are a big thing here. Accent discrimination is a thing. People lose jobs over it. If you want a high profile example that people on here might know, the reason beloved antimonachist Christopher Eccleson left doctor who and refused to have anything to do with it until very very recently was at least rumoured to be about accent discrimination. David Tennant had to hide his naturally Scottish accent when he took over. But it's not just that, it's a deep thing that you can study. Call centre jobs prioritise areas and people with accents considered more friendly, the BBC spent years not featuring any accent but RP (think the accent the royals have). It's a big ass deal. Kids in school are taught not to use dielect features because they're "wrong " and over the country our dielects are being leveled and removed and it does take away a part of local culture.

And then there's the accents that you guys choose to mock and it's a mixture of traditional London cockney (which I don't mind being mocked too much, it's a dick move because it's very working class but not as bad) and MLE or Multi Cultural London English. MLE is a fascinating dielect but the reason it's such a dick move to mock it is that it's our version of AAVE and because of that is often on of the main targets of being ironed out in schools because... Racism. It's not a complete parallel to AAVE, they have different orgins and influences and white people speaking in that dielect is less weird than it would be for a white person to speak in AAVE but it's rooted in Jamaican Patios. So yeah it's a pretty dickish move to mock that especially when you use the excuse of it being ok because of everything britan did during the empire because that the language primarily of immigrants who were victims of it.

Mock the UK all you like, mock our horrific history, our food, our culture in general and I'll absolutely laugh along but when you're mocking British accents you're stepping on a really sensitive area without understanding that history. I doubt if people understood the weight of mocking MLE you'd still do it.

Final note if you do want to mock British accents, the ones to mock without upsetting anyone are the posh ones. They sound way stupider anyway.

A question about "A Christmas Carol"

In 19th century London, would a clerk in Bob Cratchit's position and his family definitely have had Cockney accents or not?

In the book, his wife's way of speaking has a lower-class vibe ("Sit ye down before the fire, my dear, and have a warm, Lord bless ye!"), but Bob's speech patterns read as much more refined ("I know, my dears, that when we recollect how patient and how mild he was; although he was a little, little child; we shall not quarrel easily among ourselves, and forget poor Tiny Tim in doing it.”).

I don't know if this is realistic, though, or if Dickens wrote Bob as better spoken than he would have been to make him easier for upper-class readers to sympathize with.

As for the adaptations, they vary wildly. Admittedly I'm American and no expert on British accents, but I think I can detect the differences well enough.

All the earlier adaptations, until around 1970, have RP-speaking Cratchits, without a trace of Cockney. But then the 1970 musical Scrooge gives them all very slight Cockney accents. And then a year later, in 1971, Richard Williams's animated short is the first version to give them full-blown thick Cockney accents. And from then on, it varies. For example, the Cratchits in the 1984 George C. Scott version (with David Warner as Bob) speak RP, but the Cratchits in the 1999 Patrick Stewart version (with Richard E. Grant as Bob) and in the 2009 Disney CGI version (Gary Oldman as Bob) are very Cockney, with some of Bob's lines slightly altered from the book to give him more working-class grammar.

Are the Cockney Cratchits more realistic than the better-spoken ones, or could it have gone either way?

Watching the second Enola Holmes and it's just randomly Britishly classist??? The bad guy is the only one with a strong lower-class accent (even a character that mocks another for being too posh doesn't have a discernably different accent to my American ear). Like there's no REASON for this to be the case, but they did it.

Edit: hadn't finished the movie but a secret good person actually has the same accent. but overall I think the accents are still weird, esp. Bc the main matchgirls (poor) speak the same as Enola (rich background) (to my American ear).

Also the plot is very pro workers rights so it's not like it's a classist movie. It's just the accent directing that can be read that way.
