One of our favourite places to hunt for bargains and lost treasures, the Fishermen's Wharf Markets in Port Adelaide is finally closing permanently before being torn down for redevelopment.
I thought I'd check it out on its final ever day of trading and have one last browse and get a few bit of footage for posterity.
Sunday 28th August 2022.

The Burnt City and Time and Place
Tumblr media
Oh, Punchdrunk thrives on nostalgia. They can't keep away from it.
Sleep No More has the 30s, The Drowned Man has the 60s, and The Burnt City was meant to break away from that. But does it really?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ancient Greek tragedy by way of cyberpunk. A neon-noir post-apocalyptic future. Time looping in on itself. So our future looks an awfully lot like the past. Right down to letters being dated September 1922.
And some of our music is contemporary - and some is indistinctly nostalgic. We've got opera, we've got crackling old records, but of course we've got 80s New Wave too. Our soldiers wear leg wraps and greatcoats, Eurydice's in a flapper dress, the set has bricabrac from every antique store in London.
Where are we?? When are we?? Greece, England, Germany? Everywhere, everywhen, nowhere and never.
Tumblr media
And that can be hard to wrap your head around. Sleep No More feels so consistent, you feel very transported into a specific time and place, and you can tell when they've done it right because you feel like you're there. With The Burnt City, it's less clear. You've been transported somewhere, for sure, but it's a realm all its own.
And if you look at it through the lens of trying to replicate any one of the places it draws inspiration from - Weimar Germany, Ancient Greece, Metropolis or Los Angeles year 20xx - well, it fails. Expect a consistent aesthetic, come out disappointed.
Tumblr media
So TBC is forging an identity of its own, taking from today and yesterday and tomorrow however it likes. But it's muddled; a lot of the ephemera of the past is lumped into one "past" spanning many decades. We have Marlene, icon of the 30s singing from the 60s alongside an 80s Vangelis trying to sound like the 40s.
We could be anywhere from 100 years ago to the year I was born. With a little bit of Ancient Greece sprinkled on top.
We're adrift in the underworld. A hundred thousand souls pass every day, accumulating over time into an uncountable number, each bringing their cultural greatest hits with them.
Time has no meaning anymore when you've got eternity.

22-24! for the writing asks! :)
Ahh thank you!! <3
22. How organized are you with your writing? Describe to me your organization method, if it exists. What tools do you use? Notebooks? Binders? Apps? The Cloud?
Ehh I pretty much exclusively use scrivener, which lets you do the whole shebang right there in the app? I love a paper notebook as much as the next person but it turns out the only way to get me to do anything is to lower the laziness barriers as far as possible, which means using apps... my whole life is basically in Notion (bullet journal organiser thing), Scrivener (writing projects), and Bear (every other notebook under the sun - courses and exam prep etc). I use Simplenote for obligatory Notes App Musings.
23. Describe the physical environment in which you write. Be as detailed as possible. Tell me what’s around you as you work. Paint me a picture.
Ehh I usually just write in my living room? God my living room is so cluttered, it might take a minute to paint a picture of this :') I live in an old tenement building, so the ceiling is high, and the floor is a light polished wood. There's a kind of old-fashioned gold-coloured pendant chandelier hanging from the ceiling, but I'm a lamp kinda gal, so theres two standing lamps with golden stems, waterfall fairylights in the window, and fairylights along the mantlepiece and in a little glass dome on my desk. The desk is an old-fashioned-style writing desk in a dark powder blue, and matches the tv stand and the end tables. On the desk there's a monitor and a light-up clickity clackity keboard, as well as a gold letter rack with various cards and letter writing sets. On the end tables are my collection of Turner coffee table books. The fireplace and doors are also powdery blue-grey, and the fireplace has Spanish tiles in it. There's two tall golden candlesticks on the mantlepiece, with blue candles in them, and an ivy and a spider plant (moving in gifts) - there's also photographs and two bookends in the shape of greek columns. There's bookshelves along two walls, with lots of little bricabrac on them - a ceramic fairy mushroom, another moon planter, a cross stitch made by my friend, an origami bird and dragon, and several small manta ray soft toys. There's a dark blue velvet couch and armchair, gold and blue cushions with plant and dragonfly patterns, and a variety of larger sea-creature soft toys (Blahaj, some manta rays). There's a blue rug with a thick pile that has a pattern a bit like water, with dark and light shades. Against the free wall, there's an arched mirror with a grey blue frame, with a monstera plant and record player in front of it, and on the other side of the room there's a bay window with neutral curtains, some hanging plants, a gold crescent-moon-shaped planter, and metal curtain tiebacks in the shape of limoncello vines. (phew)
24. How much prep work do you put into your stories? What does that look like for you? Do you enjoy this part or do you just want to get on with it?
I pretty much need to do a rough outline and a draft 0, but I really don't enjoy it very much :') Writing is like the only creative thing I have where I hold myself to a really high standard, and it's probably the only thing I show debilitating perfectionist tendencies in (in general I'm pretty lenient when it comes to my own failings as a human). Draft zeros always force me to confront much worse writing than I'm really comfortable with, and the transition from nice safe perfect imagining to messy shitty drafting is always a misery for me. I much prefer drafts 1-3 where I feel like there's a bit of positive feedback around me liking what I've written.

DAVE: yo
DAVE: sure you still want to do this
KARKAT: YEAH. IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO CALL IT OFF.
KARKAT: BY WHICH I MEAN THIS ENTIRE FUCKING COMEDY OF ERRORS THAT DAVE PREPOSTEROUSLY INSISTS ON CALLING A “CAMPAIGN.”
KARKAT: OR HOW ABOUT THE ELECTION ITSELF? WE CAN PUT THE KIBOSH ON THAT TOO IF YOU WANT.
KARKAT: IF YOU’RE FEELING UNCOMFORTABLE JAKE, JUST SAY THE WORD. WE’LL STICK A PRONGSHOVEL IN THE WHOLE DEAL AND GO HOME.
KARKAT: OR. YOU KNOW. JUST YOUR SPEECH.
JAKE: Dont be daffy chaps. If i were the sort of man to balk at a bit of hot potato in the evening i wouldnt be where i am today!

JAKE: Which means that we potentially have a few things in common since ive come here to...
JAKE: To... to...
JAKE: Ive come to...
JAKE: Rather that is to say,
JAKE: In delicate times such as these,
JAKE: Even though usually its a toffer of a bad idea to talk politics in public,
JAKE: Today we have all most certainly gathered here,
JAKE: T-to have what is definitely a political conversation.
JAKE: Y-yes that d-does seem to... be the lay of the land.
JAKE: Th-that ive come here to... tell you all about my political opinions...
JAKE: Which I will get to um shortly and with er minimal... verbal bricabrac...
JAKE: B-because I—
JAKE: I...
JAKE: Ive... made a terrible mistake.
JAKE: What in the devil was i thinking coming here?
JAKE: Why did I...?
JAKE: I came here to...

DAVE: (oh jesus fucking christ)
JAKE: Boy howdy...
JAKE: Umm.
JAKE: Sorry about the hiccup there folks.
KARKAT: (HICCUP???)
DAVE: (smfh)
JAKE: Ive been dealing with some personal issues as of late and was momentarily distracted.
JAKE: But nevermind that. I know what youve all come here today to hear.
JAKE: There has been quite a ruckus in the press these last few weeks concerning the subject of the election and more importantly where i stand on the candidates.
JAKE: So today id like to set the record straight,
JAKE: On that matter,
JAKE: As well as all other matters.
JAKE: You see
JAKE: *takes a deep breath*
DAVE: (oh no)
DAVE: (is he about to do what i think he is)
KARKAT: (WHAT??)
KARKAT: (WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING???)
JAKE: I—

"Construction." From the Maha Upanishad, the Exploration of the Mysteries of the Atman.
Tumblr media
V-181. (Mental) construction is indeed the process of putting together (of constituents); it comes automatically into being and waxes fast unto pain, never unto delight.
V-182. ‘Indulge not in mental construction; in a state of stability, dwell not on positive existence. Persevere in stopping mental construction. Thus one never again pursues the trail of construction.
V-183. ‘By the mere absence of imagination, (the process of) mental construction dwindles automatically. (One act of) construction leads to another. Mind battens on itself, O sage !
V-184. ‘Getting (off construction) abide in the Self. Once this is done, what can prove difficult ? Just as this sky is empty, so is the entire cosmos.
Emptying the mind of the habit for story telling is requisition if one is to find the purest Self. We have already discussed how to meditate, how the darkness waiting behind the eyes, blank, terrifying is an insurmountable barrier between life and death and it cannot be explained nor willed into anything other than what it is: the mind.
When the mind adds its first comforting thought, it is, I am alive! Then come the urges to pee, to evacuate, eat, drink, masturbate, to desire the things the body longs for, then come the perceptions and opinions, anxieties, levers, buttons, pulleys and hooks the mind makes of the outer world.
The soul is the Preceptor of all of these. It becomes Self when the wool gathering in life ends and the pursuit of one's purposes become wonderfully clear. The Self cannot be found in the Scripture, in religion, practice, faith, or foundry. It must be found through ritual exception to the nonsense.
Does this mean those poor persons living in Gaza or Ukraine should sit and meditate and find the Self? And force their minds to reject the stories regarding their predicaments? These scenarios explain nothing about religion and religion has no way of explaining them because they should not be happening in the first place.
This brings us to the Utter Meaning of religion, what is ritual and what is Duty. To obey the laws of humankind and the Law of God as a matter of Duty permits the soul to sit within its body and define its luxury purposes as it purveys itself through life on earth.
All wealth, health, family and happiness attained in life without happenstance or corruption is obtained through attendance to duty first.
First the laws and the Law which prevent the deconstruction of life on earth. Then one sits and tames the mind, rids it of all of the bricabrac, and without delusion follows the course.
