What if Brego was a black horse, and not only that but the ONLY black horse left in Rohan by the time of the War of the Ring. A couple of Nazgûl tried to take him in the summer of 3018 but Théodred fought them off single-handed

Oh man. I love this! I think both of our Théodreds have predominantly shown their sweet/caring sides and thoughtful natures, but of course he’s also a marshal of the Mark and a truly brave, capable fighter. So it’s so perfect to give him a moment where he gets to be an absolute bad ass, and there’s certainly no better way to do that than to stand up to a freakin’ Nazgûl!

Plus, I love where this goes no matter which universe (Théodred lives/Théodred dies) you’re playing in. If he lives, I am obsessed with the visual of him on the sole black horse at the head of an army of Rohirrim all on chestnuts and grays. Just Théodred striking fear into the hearts of anyone who sees his éored because he’s the guy that dares to have the black horse and managed to keep it, alone among all the Rohirrim!

If he dies, it gives a better explanation to me of why Brego goes wild after his death. Aragorn’s suggestion that Brego has simply “seen enough war” doesn’t really work for me. All of Rohan’s horses at that time had seen a lot of war. The implication that Brego uniquely couldn’t handle it isn’t as satisfying to me as it is to think that Brego was traumatized by what actually would have been a unique experience—having the Nazgûl try to snatch him—and that the only way he was able to go on from that point was by the will of Théodred. Brego loved and trusted him so much that he overcame his Nazgûl trauma, but ONLY for Théodred.
