So I’m reading The Secret Life of Mary Anne Spier, in which Mary Anne gets a job working as an elf in Santa’s village at the mall to pay off all the money she spent on Christmas presents using her dad’s credit card. She’s made friends with a coworker, Angela, this teenage girl who she finds out is living at a womens shelter. She explained that her parents threw her out because “they don’t like my clothes, or my makeup, or the way I choose to live my life.” So… she’s gay. She said she’s been a constant embarrassment for them because they’re snobby, upper middle class people who wanted her to dress right, act right, and only hang around with the right kind of people (other white upper middle class society minded kids). So nothing is explicit, but it’s kind of there if you choose to see it. Anyways apparently this girl is saving money so she can come out to California with friends that already live here. Very curious if they’ll wrap this up with a family reconciliation or her getting the money. I reckon family… but I’m curious how they’ll handle it.

David-Michael was lying on the floor with Louie, who isn’t doing well 😰 Karen, Andrew, and Boo Boo the cat all decided to lie down with them. It’s really sweet and I feel emotionally compromised.

I bought a babysitter’s club book on like Friday or Saturday, iirc, and it was the last one I needed from the first 100 books. I was excited to hit that milestone in my collection. But the seller canceled the order this morning, and now I’m disappointed. To add insult to injury, I paid $6 but there isn’t a single copy listed now for under $15… makes me wonder if the seller realized they listed it too cheaply and backed out so they can relist later. 😩

I’ve had this image sitting in my photo library for a while and just realized I never posted it. But this is funny as fuck to me. Kristy’s brother David Michael is trying to think of a science fair project, and I love that his mind went to astronauts and monsters having a fight on Venus lol. Kids are amazing.

You know, I’m surprised to see this in a babysitters club book simply because they tend not to address Big Issues TM unless the book is about that issue. But you know what, bias is always a part of our lives, and I’m glad this book told kids in a subtle way that racism isn’t just overt bigotry like violence and yelling slurs. It’s also the fact that white society will expect the worst of black people and other POCs until we prove we’re not whatever negative stereotype they automatically see. It’s a little clunky and definitely holds your hand as it guides you to the point, but the point still stands.

This is such a good description of grief. I had only read this book once before, and it was difficult for me because Claudia’s relationship with her grandmother and her reaction to the loss of her grandmother was not unlike how I was when I lost my grandpa... and it was just a little too difficult to read. It’s still hard now, but I think I appreciate this more now. The target audience for these books is children, and I imagine this might be helpful for a child who is dealing with the loss of a grandparent.

So I’ve been looking forward to beginning a reread of the babysitters club complete series once I have all the books. Some I’ve never read. But it occurs to me that I have the first 80 or so books now, as well as a bunch of random ones after that point. Even if I read one book a week, it’d be more than a year before i reached one that I don’t currently have. I’m current in the middle of, um, several books lol... and I think when I reach a point where that’s not the case lmao I may start that reread. Exciting! I feel like I grew up with these characters, like they’re my friends. And I feel like I’m happiest with reading when I’m reading my series books and kids books. (I read other stuff, I have read tons of shit in my life, I don’t just read stuff for kids... it’s just the happiest type of book for me and I want to enjoy things that make me feel happy 💗)

There’s this plot in babysitters club super special #2 where Mary Anne writes this goopy love letter to Logan so that the girls in her summer camp cabin will realize she’s cool and has a boyfriend, and it just reminds me of when I was a senior in high school and Significant Boy From My Past was a freshman in college and he calls me is basically like “can I call you again later when I get back to my dorm?” And I said he could but asked why he couldn’t just talk now and he was like “well... I want my roommates to see that I know a girl” like what 😂

Reading the babysitters club as a queer adult, knowing that Ann M Martin is a lesbian, so many things make a lot of sense lol. Why the girls had such intense dedicated bonds, why I was so obsessed with those bonds as a child.
