I’ve just finished Gaudy Night, and I wanted to thank your blog for posting about Sayers enough to push me into finally reading the series! I’m absolutely in love with the whole book - from the quotations to the characters to the debates I can tell its just like nothing else I’ve ever read. (Also, since I’ve loved Sayers so much, I wonder if you have any other literary recommendations from the 1920s/30s? I know films from that period fairly well, but not books) Thanks again!
Anon, this brings me such very great pleasure to know! Welcome to the society of those who have fallen in love with Gaudy Night because it's like nothing else we've ever read (the characters! the debates! the quotations!)
I am sure that I am going to forget some obvious things in making recommendations, but here are some:
E.M. Forster, A Passage to India (hypnotically atmospheric, complex)
Ernest Bramah, Kai Lung's Golden Hours (Orientalist fantasy novel, recommended mostly because Peter and Harriet quote it to each other.)
Virginia Woolf, Jacob's Room OR Three Guineas OR Mrs. Dalloway (I love Mrs. Dalloway but it packs a very particular modernist wallop, and I might recommend starting with one of the other two. Three Guineas is non-fiction but Woolf is never less than incandescent.)tho
Absolutely anything by P.G. Wodehouse. Please enjoy. Seasonally: Summer Lightning.
Thomas Mann, Der Zauberberg, in case you want to cool off in snow instead of experiencing an English summer.
Josephine Tey, A Shilling for Candles (Tey is, like Sayers, both mystery author and superb prose stylist)
For more well-written mysteries of the period: Ngaio Marsh, Georges Simenon, and G.K. Chesterton even though many of his works are slightly pre-1920s.
Djuna Barnes, Nightwood (distinctive, confident, immersive prose)

Quote
What elements of Fall culture and practice inform House of All? “We are not The Fall, and we don’t sound totally like The Fall, but we are using some Fall principles gathered over the years – a way of working. Mark to me was a great editor. He didn’t come up with the ideas and riffs and tunes. But he decided what to run with and what to drop,” Bramah says. “The working methods are borrowed from an idealised Fall. Our past experiences are heavily laden with The Fall. It’s the repetition and discipline, using those principles in a fresher way.” Paul Hanley tempers this: “The whole ethos of The Fall wasn’t there. Mark E Smith wasn’t there. And he wouldn’t have approved anyway.” His brother says: “It’s quite amazing it worked. None of us had been in The Fall for at least 20 years. It was good for Pete to bring that more recent part” – Greenway played for almost a decade with the final iteration of the group, as Smith’s health declined – “but one thing with The Fall and House of All is we don’t overthink it. We never used to talk about music with The Fall. It just happened.” Bramah adds: “We work quickly and keep everything sparse. Minimalistics. It’s intuition, a commonality of process. The pressure was we didn’t have any material. We hadn’t rehearsed. We hadn’t even met Pete before. We might be making too much of the fact we made it up on the spot – we did spend six days mixing it as well.”
Martin Bramah: ‘Being in The Fall is a life sentence. Why not embrace it and have fun?’

Fic: Last Words Spoken
Summary: The final conversation between Locksmith and Thadeus, in the moments before Locksmith was sealed in the Vault of the Becile Manor Archives.
Words: 301
For people who can't access Ao3!
---
You know, you’re not the first of your kind. Al-Jazari of the Islamic Golden Age was both a maker of automata and an innovative lock maker. You’ve heard of the four-dial chests? No?
Maybe something more modern will suffice. There were two highly respectable locksmithing companies in Britain in the early 1800s, Chubb and Bramah. Chubb locks were used all over the country by the prison and postal service; Bramah’s had 494 million combinations.
Both companies brought challenges to display at 1851’s Great Exhibition. An American named Alfred Charles Hobbs picked them both over the course of the summer and went on to manufacture his own design-- the ‘protector.’
What I’m trying to say, Thadeus, is that I will get out of here.
It’s simple inevitability. Between the two of us, only one is going to die. And you ensured that it would not be me. Not even if I break these metal hands to twisted splinters tearing open this vault. I have no blood left to bleed. So long as my head remains attached, I will live. And anyone foolish enough to remove it… Well, that’s why you’re sealing me away after all. Your paranoia has certainly worked in my favor. Tell me, are your crass little prototypes trapped to kill anyone who tampers with them, too?
You never drag out a conversation like this unless you want something. What is it, then? Are you waiting for me to say the quote?
‘For the love of God, Montressor?’
Your humor’s always been so droll, Thadeus. It’s truly a wonder that she didn’t just throw herself at you.
Oh ho, struck a nerve, have I?
Save your foul language. After all, you only have so much breath left.
  …
I was always more of a Dumas man, myself.
  Well, then.
  To work.

Facts about Aluminium Extrusion
Information mainly gathered from: https://www.simmal.com/
Before we begin to discuss the facts, let’s start with defining what extrusion actually is. To extrude something would mean you are forcing something through and out of something. The imagery I believe is a great comparison to this would be the way you extrude toothpaste from a toothpaste tube when brushing your teeth. With aluminium, it is the process in which aluminium alloy material is forced through a die with a specific profile that is cross-sectional. A powerful ram pushes the aluminium through the die, and it comes out of the opening of the die.
Origins
The extrusion process has been around since 1797 when a man named Joseph Bramah created the method. It was mainly done manually until the hydraulic press was invented in 1820. It was not until the year of 1894 that a man named Alexander Dick made the world’s very first hot extrusion process to be done without non-ferrous materials. Aluminium extraction was apparently in very high demand during both the world wars in the creation of aircraft and military machinery.
Shapes
So, what shapes can be produced during this process? Well, that is sorted into three categories:
Solid, which has no enclosed voids or openings
Hollow, with one or more voids
Semi-hollow, with a partially enclosed void
Solid shapes are mainly used for things such as beams, rods, and angles. Hollow shapes are mainly used for things such as square or rectangular tubes. Semi-hollow shapes are mainly used for something called a “C” channel with a narrow gap.
See https://www.simmal.com/
Industries
The process of aluminium extrusion is one utilised by a lot of different industries out there. Just to list a few of said industries:
Electronical
Aerospace
Architectural
Automotive
Energy
The process
The extrusion process is one that can be broken down into just ten steps:
The extrusion die is prepared and moved to the extrusion process
An aluminium billet is then preheated before the extrusion
The billet is transferred to the extrusion press
The ram pushes the billet material into the container
The extruded material emerges through the die
Extrusions are guided along with the runout table and quenched
Extrusions are sheared to table length
Extrusions are moved to the stretcher and stretched into alignment
Extrusions are moved to the finish saw and cut to length
After this process is complete, it can be heat treated to enhance its properties. If the heat treatment is utilised, they can have various finishes to the surface which enhance their aesthetic and boost the corrosion protection. Fabrication operations can also be applied to bring them into their final dimensions.
Temperatures
In the extrusion process, the temperatures can range from 375 to 500 degrees which remain below the point of boiling for aluminium allows which is set at around 660 degrees Celsius.
Aesthetics
Aluminium extrusions are not only being utilised in the actual making of products that are related to industries such as food preparation, transportation, and space exploration. This process is now being gaining utilisation in the creation of things such as jewellery and art.
Records set
For the modern consumer, extruded aluminium has a lot of great properties to be utilised such as its increased lifespan, cost-effectiveness, and eco-friendliness just to name three. Tesla Motors’ Model S had reached a record automotive safety rating. It achieved this due to the fact it preserved 64.5% of driver residual space because of nesting multiple deep aluminium extrusions in the side rail of the car to absorb impact energy. The company Koga created a bike with a record-breaking A-limited aluminium frame that weighs just over two pounds.
