76 for broken road please!!
76. Did you have any ideas that didn’t make the final cut of [Fanfic Name]?
actually, most of what i wanted got into broken road! i'm really happy about that. there were only a few things i didn't quite have room for:
john & mary resolution. i left it pretty ambiguous so everyone could imagine their own ending, because i just couldn't decide what felt right. but it feels like a little bit of a cop-out, you know? ultimately though it was just out of the scope of this fic
and speaking of things out of the scope of this fic...since it's a fix-it fic, i was sad that i couldn't bring back eileen. they fridged her for absolutely NO reason whatsoever and i'm mad about it. like, yes, samwena is great and fun, but i like them equally as friends, and i LOVED sam and eileen...but it would have required SO much more work (and words!) to make it feel earned and this fic is already over the 100k limit
similarly, i would have liked to include pov from mary and sam, and go deeper into their issues with each other. it's a four-person family! john got time with sam, mary, and dean, and dean got time with sam, mary, and john, but by virtue of excluding these two povs they didn't get much meaningful stuff hashed out between themselves. again, this was due to size and scope. it would have been another 50k at least, maybe even another 100k. additionally, the bad guy of this story - michael - doesn't tie into their stories as well as he does with dean & john, so whatever work i did with them would not have had the climax that dean and john had. if anything, there needs to be some kind of roleswap broken road fic where we do the same thing with mary and sam but they're playing whack-a-mole with lucifer instead and eileen is the love interest that survives despite all odds. i'm never going to write it, so this is an open invitation, lol.
believe it or not, there was originally a scene where dean taught jack to play pool. in the original version of this fic, which was gen and not dean/cas (i thought i didn't have room, but after nov 5...), they left the bunker a lot more. (actually, by the end of writing it, i was a little frustrated with how little they seemed to need to leave it for all the melodrama to happen! i wish i could have varied my scenery more.) so, prior to the sex scene in ch3, when dean confides in cas about his complex feelings about john - this originally happened at a bar, or some other place with pool tables - maybe there was a pool table in the bunker, lol. dean would teach jack a few things about pool and talk to him about john. (this ultimately became the conversation they had during the hatchet man movies.) sam, mary, cas, and john would come in, and cas would jerk his head at dean so they could talk semi-privately at the bar or in the corner to tell dean how the mission went. john would move to teach jack how to hold a pool stick, cas would become alarmed, and dean would stop him from interfering. john would play Good Dad and teach jack a couple of tricks without doing anything horrible (i think at this point he either didn't know what jack was or was less bothered by it), and dean and cas would both relax. and then dean would go on to say the same things he said in ch3 about john being good to him, just...without the sex. that all got moved around - due to the urgency of dean's situation, which was necessary to build tension, we didn't have time for as many quiet moments like this. i replaced pool with hatchet man because it was necessary for dean to be restrained, and i love the hatchet man episode, and also because john going "we all do bad things sometimes" was in my opinion unequivocally hilarious. after i decided to do dean/cas after all, i instantly pictured this conversation moving to the car - you absolutely cannot have their first time be anywhere else - and that was that. history and memes were made.
thank you for asking actually!! that was so much more than i realized i still had in my brain, lol. i'm really happy that people still think about broken road so often after the fact, it makes me warm and fuzzy.

I don't understand why people get up in arms over badlands rumble Vash being some sort of pervert, when it's so clear he's literally not. being. one? he's putting on a goofy, annoying, over the top show of harassment towards Amelia as a ploy to stay close to her and at the same time make her think he's nothing more than a silly jackass. and it works! Works so well people think it's for real lmao. like if he really was for real with that he'd have done something to her in the hotel room, but A. he didn't (he put her to bed and slept on the table, and brought her doughnuts in the morning, how cute is that) and B. really? we all know he's not like that, c'mon ppl. in the third act he drops his fuckboy attitude like a hot potato to try to get her to leave when he knows Gasback is coming to town, and from then on he never acts overly flirtatiously towards her again. contrasted with the characters in the movie who were actually trying to assault Amelia, it's clear Vash is putting on his usual consummate act, just this time he's taking a different angle. he'd been trailing Amelia from the start, he knew she was out to get Gasback personally, and needed to stay by her to prevent her from offing GB/to protect her, which he did on the stand steamer, and then it was just a matter of playing up the "idiot trying to smash" bit until shit hit the fan.

At the end of every Yugioh episode Yugi is like “hey thanks for your help saving the world today Kaiba, wanna go to Taco Bell with us?” to which Kaiba replies “with you losers?? No way, come on Mokuba let’s go home” and Mokuba is like “bye guys, see you at D&D tomorrow!” and Yugi and the gang wave back and Kaiba thinks to himself how his little brother is WAY too good to be hanging out with those dweebs but he doesn’t say it out loud because despite being functionally a villain, he loves his brother more than his own life and would never intentionally hurt his feelings. As they walk off into the sunset Mokuba says “hey Seto, can we go to Taco Bell?” and Kaiba, who immediately forgets every word Yugi says that doesn’t pertain to his special interests, says “Sure.” End theme plays.

I'm having a lot of feelings about 1x11 as is to be expected. Bellamy saying what he wants to say and then saying but I'm not the guy who says stuff like that to keep up his selfish asshole image despite clearly Caring So Much the entire episode. Immediately asking raven if it helped, knowing it didn't but hoping it did anyway. How clarke says only people who can be spared should go hunt, but when clarke, finn, and myles don't come back, it's raven, Octavia, Bellamy, and monty who go search for them, all arguably essential personnel.
And then when they find myles, Bellamy does exactly what he would have done if he had been there when they were attacked. He says they need to get myles, who is extremely injured, back to camp. He immediately says he's sorry to raven when he finds out that clarke and Finn were taken, because he assumes that means they're dead or worse, but he can focus on and save this one person, myles, who is in direct danger and in need of help.

Fyre sent me an article that made me Lose My Mind, so instead of sending 800 tweets about it, I decided to just write up my thoughts here
so, in re: ET Fox, 'Jacobitism and the Golden Age of Piracy' --
Fox is definitely exaggerating. His logic jumps from 'ship names and alleged toasts', to 'every pirate was one contact away from a confirmed Jacobite', to "a Jacobite maritime community" (296), with little evidence beyond each previous assumption. He does demonstrate a link with popular Jacobitism, but overstates pirates' political commitment by far.
There's one letter to George Camocke, a Jacobite naval officer, suggesting that the pirate fleet should unite under his command and take Bermuda as a Jacobite base, but the source is shaky, and it went nowhere once Woodes Rogers ousted the pirates. (It's I think from 1718 and unsigned? Possibly from Charles Vane and his crew? Fox only says that, "Through these contacts [unspecified, between Vane and English Jacobites] a letter reached George Camocke" (286), which is suspiciously vague, and I can't access the original to check. Either way, it would still only prove the committed politics of one crew.)
Fox also makes a lot of Archibald Hamilton, governor of Jamaica from 1710-16, who commissioned and profited from the anti-Spanish privateers who turned pirate and made up some of the original Bahamas pirates c. 1715. Since "it has been suggested that [Hamilton] was a Jacobite supporter" (283), Fox claims that these establishing pirates were also committed Jacobites, and therefore the whole pirate community that grew around them must have been. (Which leads to Fox then being baffled when there's no direct evidence of Jacobitism among some of them, such as the crews of Anstis, Fenn, or Rackham.) He relies on these assumptions, and then claims that every connection between pirates proves their mutual Jacobite sympathies.
It's much more likely (and in line with the historians I've read so far) that the Jacobite toasts and ship names speak to a broader anti-authoritarianism among pirates, with no evidence of committed Jacobite actions by them, eg, specifically targeting Hanoverian ships, or materially supporting or trying to support Jacobite rebels beyond that one letter. Indeed, the 1710s/20s pirates are generally agreed to be distinct for not adhering to religious/national loyalties like the C17th pirates usually did. (I'm so sorry, I haven't consolidated my notes yet, but I know Marcus Rediker goes through this, as does Kris E Lane, and I think Tim Travers and David Cordingly.)
Fox does identify a correlation between the rise and fall of Jacobitism and piracy over the mid/late 1710s, but attributes a pretty shaky causation: pirates ceased their Jacobite loyalties due to the suppression of Jacobitism in Britain and Europe. A much more obvious explanation is that both anti-authoritarian movements simultaneously flourished in the post-war, post-succession instability, then were both quashed as the new regime established itself and cracked down on rebels.
So, did many pirates espouse Jacobite sympathies? Yes! They named their ships in favour of Jacobite causes and rulers, and there are plenty of reports of them toasting to King James / the Pretender. (Which it must be said, although the sheer volume lends a ring of truth to the trend, individual claims should be taken with a grain of salt, as Jacobitism was a common accusation against criminals at the time, with or without a basis.)
Does that mean that the 1710s Caribbean pirate community was centred around a heart of politically committed Jacobites, as Fox argues, or largely motivated by Jacobite sentiments? Yeah, probably not.
Anyway, I am SO sorry that this article got me riled up XD the whole point of this is to say, I've never read anywhere that "many pirates were Jacobites driven out of Britain", which I KNOW wasn't even your main point, but I am unfortunately Insane. We can and should talk about expressions of pro-Jacobitism and actual political engagement among 'Golden Age' pirates, but what we know of their actual actions and espoused ideals doesn't speak to a trend of committed Jacobite politics beyond a general loyalty to rebellious causes.
#history#pirates#pirate history#Jacobites#Jacobitism#Togas does meta#this article annoyed me so much omfg#at every step Fox makes a sort of shaky assumption and then bases his next assumption entirely on that as if it's a proven truth#it's like IF hamilton was a commited jacobite and IF that loyalty was shared with the privateers and IF those privateers#retained and spread that belief among the growing pirate community and IF that was the belief that held the community together#then yeah sure i guess jacobitism was a core cause and concern for the golden age pirates#but that's a lot of fucking 'if's among a situation with a lot more obvious explanations#Fox is right that historians so far are probably ignoring the influence of Jacobitism on golden age pirates a bit#it really hasn't come up in all my reading so far and I've done... a pretty fair amount lol#but he goes so far in the opposite direction that it's kind of embarrassing#very BR Burg coded tbh XD (i say as if i've actually read burg >.> but all the reviews are forming a picture for me...)#EDIT: it's also worth noting that Jacobitism was rarely (never?) a charge laid against pirates in all the trials and moralising against them#which you'd think - if they were actually hardcore individual or broad-base supporters of the cause - might've come up more often#but anti-pirate arguments basically always revolve around the threat to trade and property therefore nation/empire#if lawyers and reverends wanted to argue that pirates were traitors - and they did! - you'd think they'd mention any actual treasons#EDIT EDIT: N: Harry M. Lewis (2021) George Camocke’s 1718 Proposal of a Jacobite–Pirate Alliance#The Mariner's Mirror 107:3 pp366-370#has better detail and context for that letter

im reading too much into a game series whose dialog can probably fit on two sheets of paper, but i think a lot about how long, a guy defined by familial problems and especially messed up by his relationship w his (ded) sister, went on to be gifted a twin brother by the universe. and not just a Surprise Twin but an entity that basically serves to highlight and reflect regular long’s flaws and shortcomings. idk how to explain exactly but it’s very juicy
and then how loaded shen long’s existence is, and how torturous that must be. he is literally just a guy he didn’t ask to be a figurehead or a metaphor for another guy’s past or anything. he just came into existence symbolizing a bunch of fuck that happened before he was born and that he doesn’t have the perspective to care about or understand. unsurprisingly he goes on to want to define his own existence but there is nothing he can ever do to permanently disconnect himself from long

25-28 for broken road please 🙏
aww bestie it makes me so 🥺 that people still think about broken road...ok here we go
25. Which idea came to you first in [x fic]?
i don't remember if i've said on here but there were two big ones...one was the scene in chapter 3 where dean and cas talk in the car. in the original conception of this fic, there wasn't any of the romance/smut stuff after because it was going to be gen. it was also taking place concurrently/directly after what is now the "dean and jack watch movies" scene. i had initially pictured it as them having that talk as dean taught jack how to shoot pool, and then dean hanging back while the rest of his family played pool with jack and having a shorter, quieter moment with cas by the bar or something while they watched. in the end the fic wound up being mostly bunker-centric (alas!) bc i couldn't justify pool when they were on the clock re: michael, and the order shifted so that the jack bit took place later and dean and cas got to get busy in the car, but the main tone and even some of the dialogue stayed true to the inital conception
the OTHER "first idea" for this fic was cas and john's confrontation. originally i think cas's line was something like, "i'm going to give you something your family never could: the truth." the basic tone is the same, but i had to rework the exact dialogue because it actually would have been a huge violation of dean's trust to tell john dean's secrets - even if it was to hurt john (maybe especially then), even in justifiable anger. he did tell him the truth, and the more important one! he just didn't betray dean's trust.
26. Which part of [x fic] was the hardest to write?
i had a hard time making dean and cas fight about 3 quarters of the way through. i also remember being absolutely tortured by some restructuring i had to do re: dean's arc with his repressed anger at john, but that's mostly because i hate editing. actually, i think the worst part was the timeline. the whole fic takes place in less than a week, and yet somehow it both begins and ends on a thursday...oops. that will haunt me forever
27. If you were ever to do a sequel to [x fic], what do you think might happen in it?
i actually talked about this here and here! i'm sorry if you've read those posts already. unfortunately i don't have a lot else to add!
28. In [x fic], what is a happy, post-fic headcanon you have about [pairing]?
i DO have one for this one though. do you remember the part where sam called dean gay but he said it lovingly but he was also torturing him because he deserved to do that? that but a more minor version for literally everyone they've ever met. i think it would do dean some good. like exposure therapy. yes i know exposure therapy is bad in real life, this is funny, let me have this

Me marca! Bjs 😚 . .
