Hi friend! Any really good books you read this year?
-Amanda
Hi, Amanda! 💖 Happy new year, friend! Hope you great one.
I didn't read as much as I wish I had this part year (just 25 books in total), so my pool of choices is kinda small, and some of them were awful. So I'll tell what my favorite books of the year were.
. The Heart's Invisible Furies by John Boyne Honestly, favorite book of the year and I think it's become one of my all-time favorites. This book is about awful, depressing things, yet it is told with such heart and such tenderness and with such a sensitive humor that it's not at all a rough read. There are very sad parts, but the narrator is so endearing, and some of the characters so completely bonkers, it just feels like you're being comforted the whole time. The line here is so thin, because the book encompasses so many terrible times and terrible situations (it starts in post-war Ireland and goes all the way to, I think, the early 2000s), but it's brilliantly executed. The story is pretty magnificent, as is the writing, but the background political and social aspects of the story are also incredible, tbh. . Lovely War by Julie Berry This is such an understated and delicate, sensitive book. It's almost 500 pages long, and it felt so much shorter. I just flew through it. It's a historical fiction about two couples who come together in the chaos of World War I. The twist is that the book is narrated by Greek gods, mostly Aphrodites, but others as well, as their influence over humans' fates gets explained in how love and war comes together. It's a really fascinating read. It got me very emotional in so many parts, and I hardly every cry reading, but this one definitely got a few tears. It's really beautiful.
. The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah Kristin Hannah has a formula with her books that always gets me. It's always a historical fiction, and it's always centered around women, and women's struggles, and women's relationships, during these particular slices of time. THis one was about a time period I frankly knew very little about because it's not something that we hear or study about in-depth in my country, which is the Dust Bowl period in post-Great Depression USA. The main character here is someone with a lot of trust and confidence issues, but who has an incredibly strong character, coming into herself and her power and her voice during the most devastating of times, while trying to save her family. She leaves her home and the only people that had ever embraced her in her entire life during the Dust Bowl period because her son nearly dies from dust pneumonia (something else I didn't know existed) and moves to the west, where she is basically treated like garbage, alongside thousands of other migrants like herself, who were trying to escape the poverty and hunger caused by the drought and the great depression. I had no idea this had happened in US history, and not only is the story of this woman so compelling and so heartbreaking, the background was also incredibly interesting to read about (for me, at least). This was not my first historical novel by Hannah and it will not be the last.
. Empire of Pain by Patrick Radden Keefe This is a non-fiction investigative story about the Sackler family and the opioid crisis in the United States. This book is incredible, and it gives you such an in-depth look into how fucked up big pharma is (and just how protected they are by the system). It tells the story of how the Sacklers built their empire, and what was the whole logic behind OxyContin and the way it was distributed was (it's fucking EVIL), thus kicking off one of the worst health crisis in the history of the United States, and it all started with pain medication. There's a show on Netflix based on this, but it's not half as good as the book. Dopesick is much better, but it's also more focused on the victims of the opioid crisis, while this paints you a pretty great picture of who (some of) the villains are.
Also unrelated, but if you're into podcasts, this guy, Patrick Radden Keefe, has an investigative podcast where he basically chases this story that got to him about how the song Winds of Change by The Scorpions was actually written by the CIA to be illegally released in the USSR towards the end of the cold war in order to disrupt society and rile the people up against the system, which apparently really did happen. It became like a hymn for the end of the USSR. The whole premise is crazy, but as he goes deeper into it you start to realize it's very, very likely to be true, because the CIA does crazier things. Also his storytelling is really great.

Protection From Fairies: Rowan
Tumblr media
“Black luggie , lammer bead , Rowan – tree and red thread , Put the witches to their speed.” Notes on the Folk-lore of the Northern Counties of England and the Borders by William Henderson (1879)
Historically, Rowan is was likely the most relied upon tree in Scotland for protection against fairies and witchcraft. This includes it being carried as a sprig, or used under thatch or above doors.
“If the remains of the worship of particular trees are scanty in the North, there is no lack of evidence as to the virtues and powers believed to inhere in the mountain ash or rowan.. The rowan was protective rather than generative. It did not bring blessing so much as ward off evil. This belief sprang from an age when it was conceived as the abode of a good spirit, hostile to the powers of darkness.” Primitive Beliefs in the North-East of Scotland by Joseph McKenzie McPherson (1929)
This protection was said to protect from fairies, changlings, witches, curses, and the evil eye. Perhaps because of this, it was considered unlucky to cutdown rowan trees and rowan was never to be burned.
“Rowan, or mountain ash. The tree which, above all others, offered the best protection against fairy enchantments and witchcraft. As the Scottish rhyme goes: Rowan, lamer [amber] and red threid, Pits witches to their speed. It will be noticed that all these are reddish, and the red berries of the row an-tree make it specially effective. A staff of rowan, a CROSS made of rowan, a bunch of rowan berries, all these were effective, and it was customary in the Highlands to plant a rowan-tree outside every house.” A Encyclopedia of Fairies by Katharine Briggs (Published in 1976)
Rowan trees can live to around 200 years, so some of the trees planted outside of homes for protection are still outside homes to this day, though the current owners might not know the significance that the trees once held.
"Caorrann, caorrunn, rowan, mountain ash. The rowan was sacred, and used in many forms about the homestead. ‘Failean caorruinn,’ a rowan sucker, or ‘fleasg caorruinn,’ a rowan wand, was placed over the lintels of the barn, byre, stable, sheep-fold, and lamb-cot, as a safeguard against witchcraft and malicious spirits. A twig of rowan was coiled into a circlet and placed beneath the milk boynes to keep the milk from being spirited away. A fire of rowan was sacred, and therefore the festival cakes were cooked with rowan faggots or other sacred wood. A coffin, or a bier, or the spokes on which it was carried, was treated with especial reverence if made of the mountain ash. Thou rowan tree before the door, Thou shalt go under me to the burial place, My face shall be put toward Dundealgan, And a beautiful bier shall be made for me" Carmina Gadelica, Volume 2, by Alexander Carmicheal, [1900]

Historic Audio Recordings:
(link) 1964. Anne Ross asks about beliefs to do with iron. Allan Walker mentions that Highlanders didn’t believe an oath was binding unless they kissed a dirk. Iron and also rowan trees were supposed to keep away evil spirits. Mr Walker follows his father’s habit of taking a sprig of rowan tied with red wool when he goes fishing.
(link) 1955. There is a great belief in the evil eye. All the old steadings had an elder tree growing beside them [Donald Munro mentions some examples], and all the old houses had a rowan, if it would grow, to prevent the evil eye. The rowan won’t grow in sight of the sea, but in that case a piece of rowan was used under the thatch.
(link) 1964. People put sprigs of rowan above their door to ward off curses. Horseshoes were used in the same way, and could be seen in many byres.
(link) 1976. Rowans and steel to keep the fairies from replacing children with changelings.
(link) 1964. Rowan trees were planted near houses to ward off evil and witches. It was unlucky to cut down rowan trees.
(link) 1972. Old ruined cottages in the north usually have a rowan planted alongside. Juniper and rowan were also put in the byres and stables to keep the evil eye away.

Boyne Raspberry Bareroot
This variety of red raspberry produces medium-sized, moderately sweet berries. Boyne raspberries are very winter hardy and bear fruit in early summer. Canes grow upright and don’t require a trellis for support. Bareroot plants grown with compost, not chemicals.

Thời gian 1 tiếng ấy dài như ‘vô tận’, ông Steve Schuller nói vói phóng viên Kenton Robinson của tờ báo The Day ở New London, bang Connecticut vào năm 2005.

the strongman prepares  to take the vault of the world  -

How To Get A Head In Advertising
“I was partying at a club, and I took a Viagra before I went. I met a nurse, who I went home with, who ended up injecting an erection enhancer into my cock. I thought, why not, what could possibly go wrong?” – ‘Gay Man Hospitalised With An Erection That May Never Go Down’, Pink News Did you need the Viagra to achieve a euphemism - a woody, a stiffy, at most almost a priapism - to feel it throb beyond its impression like animism: the pole ensouled, reanimated into formalism? The nurse, too used to bodily whims, proffers altruism as a needle. He smirks. Just ensuring your magnetism. You wanted its absence to be the cause of nihilism in all who gazed up at this edifice of hedonism. But then he cums, no longer interested in organisms or organs and their -isms. Your cock is a malapropism that you try to tie down with a loose loop of ribbons; all night it clings to life and you pray for an exorcism, divine intervention, to wake up without this barbarism. Your cock views you as a parasite and in its egotism wishes for its freedom using shooting pains and schisms.
These poems originally appeared in our ebook The Queer Body.

The Hill T T-shirt.
A few of the photos on this webpage were actually taken through among the mommies in our co-op lesson who runs Michelle Harrison Photography. Its kinesium frame leads to a very mild however resisting bike, and optional upgrades may switch this mountain bike into a very competitive 10-speed machine. For long he had heard his parents speak of the beautiful Little princess that beinged in the golden palace at the top of the Glass Mountain.
Heavy development and undergrowth very soon turns to pine as well as mountain range laurel with wetness visiting of the rocks behind the streets and little trickles and swimming pools from water with ferns and untamed berries as well as crazy florals almost everywhere http://thomasblog.pt/vitamina-h-mangosteen-onde-comprar as the street meanders climbing much higher as well as higher the edge from the mountains that line Tennessee and also North Carolina. Up till that point, The Mountain, which Cersei's boy Qyburn had actually become a Frankenstein beast, had consistently kept his headgear on. In that culture, he ultimately eliminated it, but sadly he remained in the shadows. Followers of Blue Mountain range snowboard location may as if the follower web page for this well-known ski retreat. One of the even more pleasant-- if maybe a little eccentric-- psychotherapists I have actually ever before known worked in Northern California almost Mount Shasta, and regularly devoted component of his year in India near a revered hill-- the label which leaves me totally. While that cannot as compare to mountains out West or perhaps to the lower optimals along the East Coastline, Boyne Hill offers a number of the very best snow skiing in the Midwest. This's part of the Ordesa-Viñamala Habitat Book, a peaceful mountain range haven from antarctic lowlands, black ache forests, and remarkable falls. In Gilgit-Baltistan province, the home of the Himalayas as well as the planet's 2nd best mountain K2, domestic tourist amounts soared to nearly 700,000 in 2013, from 250,000 in 2014. The skier is a patient who requires our support," however he is actually likewise an Olympic professional athlete on race day, propelling Crook as well as her fellow hill clinical employee on to the planet phase. Being able to possess a true wintertime hill trip within the limits of this cosmopolitan, southerly metropolitan area offers you a great deal from vacation traveling planning options. Especially, there are study attempts underway at both IBM as well as Sony (NYSE: SNE) which might extend the life this mission-critical business for Iron Mountain range. Actually peaked Hill itself has actually levelled to the general public for passive leisure due to the fact that 1984. You will certainly desire to make certain your little ones are comfortable making strict turns, one thing that shows up a lot in mountain range bicycling. Restless fellow climbers maintained vigil at K2 base camp, scanning the high flanks of the hill. The mountain bike add-ons that can be looked at as necessary are going to differ with every motorcyclist's special condition; this short article provides staple products that will match most bikers' situations. In addition, this is actually just as vital to have sustainability interactions that like Patagonia, Eco-friendly Hill Coffee, Campbell's Soup and also Marriott International, are consistent with the vision as well as dedication of senior monitoring and also narrate. Because the cult wased established on an amalgam from Daoist and public opinions and also strategies, creed folklore reduced the distinction in between the sphere of the spiritual mountain range representative and the intact inhabitants of the clean grotto-heavens deep within the mountain range's stomach.
