BotW/TotK Hylian Royal Family meta ahead.
These are my headcanons based on what I’ve seen from the games. Obviously, everyone has different thoughts on it. No bashing in it and possibly Rhoam-critical but not Zelda-critical. Just headcanons about how the role religion played in Royal Life pre-Calamity.
Also, I’ve barely touched AoC, so this meta is based more on BotW, TotK, OoT, MM, TP, and SS, with the full understanding that this is headcanon and no consistent canon on this matter exists and will never exist... not even between BotW and its direct sequel, TotK.
A major plot point in BotW is Zelda’s inability to connect with her powers. There is no indication that she can do the things Link takes for granted in BotW, like see the Koroks and dragons. I would be surprised if she could. She’s young, frustrated, and her father -- her only living parent -- is pressuring the hell out of her to connect with her powers. It’s clear in the flashback and in his journals that he isn’t acting like a parent and he’s aware of it. He’s acting like a king who knows that he needs a specific weapon and is given a rough rulebook on how to access the weapon. Per their history, Zelda has Goddess blood which gives her access to a weapon which can defeat this grand evil; her ancestor was able to activate it, so obviously Zelda should be able to do the same; Zelda is failing to activate the weapon which should be automatic to her per some ancient rulebooks. It’s unknown how detailed the guidelines for activating this power is or the King is just assuming that of course this is what Zelda needs to do to activate this power. I mean, it was 10k years ago (which seems insane to me, but whatever).
Here’s where more headcanons come into play. I think the power of the Goddess -- and honestly, pretty much everything spiritual -- is completely disconnected from the Royal Family in this era. Per their records, the last time the holy power was needed was a long time ago. I would be shocked if something else hadn’t happened in the meantime (seriously, it’s one hell of a time difference), but for them, the power of the Goddess Blood hasn’t been needed any time recently. Zelda has made it clear that she has no personal connection to it. Her drive is scientific. She has no internal motivation to be connected to the Goddesses. Her motivation to connect to her powers isn’t because she wants to connect to anything on a spiritual level. She wants the power to protect her people and, honestly, because she’s experiencing so much pressure and backlash. Again, per BotW (and TotK, really), we don’t see her do any of the spiritual/divine/extra stuff Link does. Link talks to multiple divine statues. He plays games with the Koroks. In the BotW flashbacks, she is happiest when she’s doing Science(!), and in TotK, she focuses on highly practical things with no stories (that I’ve seen so far) of her doing anything with a spiritual slant. Her focus is rebuilding a school, not rebuilding a church.
It makes sense, though! I think the Goddess Blood and its associated power is more academic than anything. They know Zelda has it. Hell, the Hylian Royal Family relies on that Bloodline to claim their divine right to rule. They know that the power of the Goddess was used by previous princesses to protect the family. With all that said, there is no indication in canon that it has any modern role in their lives. Hell, there is no indication that spirituality in general has any role in the lives of the Royal Family. It seems like the Goddess Blood has two primary roles pre-Calamity: to ensure Divine Right to Rule and to awaken to protect Hyrule from the Calamity. That’s it.
In at least one previous game, it was said that the Hylians’ ears were shaped that way in order to better hear the spirits and the like. We don’t know Link’s own abilities when it comes to this pre-Calamity. I personally enjoy the headcanon that he could hear and see far more than Zelda but didn’t want to say anything because it would hurt her. Would also match with the concept of “keeping his mouth shut helps keeps his ears open.” But there’s no strong evidence that spirituality or anything play a strong role in Hylian daily life pre-Calamity. It might have been something which was also lost through time. That is a major theme in many Zelda games: that important things, including connection with the divine, have been lost. The Zelda games love showing ancient, forgotten things, things whose stories can never fully be told again. The original stories are long lost, and all that exists in the BotW/TotK are modern interpretations, fairy tales, prophecies, etc. For further examples, see the Zonai Survey Teams and how they are excited about their discoveries but can’t connect to them in the way Link casually does.
I read a story once about how a pastor once invited an enthusiastic member of his congregation to lead a prayer one day. He didn’t ask her beforehand. She was always highly motivated, highly social, and a strong believer. He didn’t think anything of his request. It should have been fine! Instead, she walked up to the front of the congregation, stood there for a moment, burst into tears, and fled. Later, he discovered that while she was very religious, she was never taught how to pray. Prayer was a major part of their religion, and as such, it was expected that everyone automatically knew how to do it! Not so! He realized an important lesson that day and didn’t take it for granted again.
Prophecy and Divinity play a significant role in the Royal Family, but do they actually know what to do with it? Zelda is told to pray and she’s told to do it for a specific reason: unlock her powers so she can help defeat the Calamity. We never see the King pray or do anything religious at all. He obviously believes in the prophecies and such but doesn’t actively do anything himself: Hylia favors their family, Zelda has Goddess Blood, etc. etc. etc. Very matter-of-fact things. Nothing he needs to do, actually! Because according to the Prophecies, he just needs to make sure the players are in place! Actual knowledge and practice doesn’t come into play here. No actual internal spiritual beliefs: just practical applications.
So that’s my headcanon as to one of the reasons why Zelda struggled. Would knowing how to pray have helped in the end? Unknown. When her power eventually arose, she was still pretty disconnected from it. It seemed like in BotW and TotK that she never fully connected with it: just used it to fulfill her goal, which was stopping the Calamity from destroying her people. Maybe her daughter or granddaughter or whoever would connect with their spiritual heritage. Overall, King Rhoam, who had probably never really prayed a day in his life and had no real connection to Hylia himself, looked at his daughter, told her that the only way to awaken her powers was to pray, and never thought for a moment that if he didn’t know how to pray, how the fuck should she?

Starting a list of Zelda containment breach moments that don't feel real. I'll go first:
- Author John Boyne accidentally listing BOTW dye ingredients in his historical fiction novel and it somehow slipping through editing.
- Guillermo del Toro retweeting Shape Of Water Sidlink AU art.

What are the top five worst comments on your work?
I'm going to do the ones that are the most wtf and not the ones that hurt my feelings the most (although some of them did at the time). I've been writing for a while, and people are bananas.
The ones at the beginning of Displaced on ff.net. The critique was that I got the cost to sleep in a bed in a stable wrong. I would disagree, because it was the cost to sleep in 2 beds and the cost of 2 meals, which is not actually a thing you can buy in BotW. I edited to remove the amount and kept it vague, but I now regret doing that. The critique was that if I couldn't be bothered to get the details right, no one was going to like it. I was like, "Oh shit! There's no way I'm gonna get all these details right. I might as well quit now." This critique is now hilarious, given...*gestures around at Displaced.*
Condom-gate. So I researched how far back in history condoms were a thing. I spent way too long on this. I found that they go back much further than you'd suspect, and were made mostly of things like mouse skin, and while they had some success preventing conception they did not prevent STDs, partially because people would reuse them. (Screaming.) Confident in my research, I mentioned the condom. I did not say all of this that I had discovered, because I found it very gross, would ruin the mood, and it was not at all important to the story. Then everyone lost their damn minds thinking that I had included a condom made of latex with spermicide in it and ribbed for her pleasure or whatever. "You've made this unreadable" was one of the reviews. (Also, I'd like to point out that this story took place in a fantasy world where there's magic and shit. There is no "back then.") I edited the chapter by one word: a modifier saying what it was made of. The TV tropes page for the story says something like "Ned changed it to be historically accurate after people pointed out he did it wrong." I am still salty.
There was a critique on Doubt, which is a Zelda modern AU. The critique was "anachronisms are your Achilles heel." It was a modern AU.
The 1,500+ word essay on how I wrote Iroh abusive. I disagree. This was left on chapter 24 or something. They were very mad.
The comments on how Zelda should not be wasting her time with her childish nonsense and should instead be restoring the monarchy, missing one of the main themes of Displaced. One of these cited Meghan Markel???
Shout out to the anon that hates the awkward fail sex that I love to write. That was weird and very rude, but if they were talking about Soft Science I agree there was some awkward structuring there. But they specifically cited the Proposition AU, where there was sex, so IDK what they're on about.

Hi there!! Taking a chance to say that I love your art very much, your style is wonderful!
Talking about requests, I'm curious to see Ordovica's interaction with other characters or some fragments from her story (I love her design sm). She's a very interesting character to see more of! Or maybe you'd like to draw Link or Gan with some flowers?👀 (any idea by you)
HIII OMGG thank you so much!! That really means a lot to me!! Your art and ocs are wonderful as well ^w^
I'm also happy you like Ordovica, Zoras are my FAVORITE Zelda race I just think they're all soooooo gorgeous. (I like all the different games' designs but i think its obvious botw zoras are my favorite of all)
Ordovica is actually the Queen of my AU's Lake Zoras (I have river Zoras in my au as well so there's a bit of a distinction) and Prince Kaluga (pictured) is her son! He's a momma's boy but she just wants him to prove he can take place on the throne cause he has no ambition, he just kinda acts on whims. and is a bit spoiled lolol.
Tumblr media
It might be somewhat clear by her appearance, but she is a Lich Queen. Despite being immortal she has a history of Hylians attempting to take her life lol. Obviously they were failed efforts and the only way to truly kill her is to destroy her soul gem, which is kept guarded deep beneath Zora's Domain.
Which i actually have an old concept drawing of! (and is my header on my theme)
Tumblr media
So the entire lake is frozen for a majority of the year (only for 3 summer months is it thawed), but even so beneath the ice and further into the depths of the lake the temperature is warmer due to many hydrothermal vents (it makes many pretty frozen bubbles on the clear ice of the surface as well lol) The Zora's actually have a large portion of their kingdom underwater, so this is why I designed Ordovica and Kaluga both based on deep sea fish. (Which are a chimaera/ghost shark and an oarfish, respectively)
The Lake Zora Kingdom is also a very large kingdom, maybe even rivaling Hyrule kingdom in population bc its made up of multiple aquatic races and not just Lake Zoras (though they are the majority).
Anyways so Ordovica (and her son) historically have been very brutal rulers, the Lake Zora Kingdom and the Kingdom of Hyrule are not currently in good standing with one another (haven't been for centuries) so most Lake Zoras are hostile to humans. They can be very violent and scary if you cross them. And the mother/son duo in particular have no qualms about killing humans. Though Kaluga is a bit strange bc he doesn't harbor any hatred for humans in particular, he just has a violent nature.
Omg sorry to ramble but thank you for reading this far!!! and thank you so much for the ask/request!!!

choose violence: 2, 19, 22
....I see you DID choose violence with these options, goddamn
2. Compelling argument why your fave would never top or bottom
I'm tired so I'll go the simple route: my BOTW/TOTK Link is stone for several reasons (eg. uninterested in reciprocal touch) but not bossy at all. In fact, he's quite well-trained at taking orders. Hope you like service? /jk
19. You're mad/ashamed/horrified you actually kind of like...
I admit, the number of y'all who have convinced me not to indulge in how much the infuriating smush of Legend's backstory pisses me off is a Thing. Congrats for that, because that was one of the reasons I started my own AU: I was just *that mad* about how stupid I think it is to conflate LttP and LbW's stories. Like, why the fuck do you DO that to the poor boy?
But seeing the character actually built up and used is pretty neat in other people's work. It's a hard mash-up to make sense of! So y'all are doing a hard thing I just cannot manage to wrap my head around. Good job, keep it up!
22. Your favourite part of canon that everyone else ignores
This week it's the way that Nintendo handling its own lore means that you can interpret ALL the history facts stated in the stories as unreliable. Which means you can have SO MUCH FUN going "What did they lie about and why?" in all the games.
...This is probably just because I have a History Bachelors and my partner is currently analyzing some Turkish epics for historical data though. Like, its hard to do! but damn is it fun.

WIP game
thanks for the tag @novantinuum and @linktheacehero! :D
Rules: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! And then tag as many people as you have wips. I have deemed that this isn’t just for writing either. Sketch titles? Comics? Dnd campaigns? If you have an unfinished project, it counts!
similar to @deiliamedlini i have about eighty billion WIPs/ideas so at the time of writing this, even i have no idea how many there are. two categories: WIPs that actually have a gdoc, and ideas in my notes app. all are LoZ, and almost none of these are the actual title

I really enjoy the pokemon AU, and I love the idea of the BotW map being a pokemon region, I think it works really well! If it's not spoilery, where are all the gyms located? Or other classic pokemon locations, like the league?
You have no idea how happy I am to hear that you're enjoying my au!! Most of the location's aren't spoilery, but there are a couple that are not in this list that are important.
All the main towns in botw are still there, but they're all expanded. Since it's not a post-Calamity setting, there won't be all the ruins and destruction around. But there are also more towns and settlements. I've got a fun little powerpoint to help me remember routes and locations, but since that does have some spoilers on it, I'll just describe the basics below the cut. But tl:dr, here's a brief map with most of the main points of interest marked off:
Tumblr media
Kakariko village - This is the place where Professor Flora and Professor Sun have their "home base". The two of them are pretty mobile with their research, but their physical lab space is located here.
Hateno Village - Location of the first Gym. Also the location of Purah's lab, a scientist who's main research subject is the pokedex. She's the one to go to for cataloging, reporting, and recording encounters with pokemon and compiles all the data for trainers.
Dracozu Village - This is one of the towns I've made myself. It's located around the Spring of Courage in Faron Woods, and home to the second Gym. It's very similar to the Village of the Dragons that Iris is from from Pokeani. It's a small, tight-knit community, and can be intimidating for new trainers to go to.
Lurelin Village - The coastal village on the other side of Faron and home of the third Gym.
Old Castle Town - Up on the Great Plateau, another town that I've built. This on is much busier and lively, centered around the fourth Gym, which in this au is the Temple of Time. There's a smaller town on the other side of the plateau (which is where Hyrule is from), but most of the central hub is in Old Castle Town.
Kara Kara Bazaar - The site of the fifth Gym. Gerudo Town is still around and still has its vai-only rule, but the bazaar is much more expanded. There are merchants from other regions that will travel and sell their goods here, and it's a very culturally diverse area.
Ordon Village - The valley directly south of Mt. Satori is where Ordon Village is. Similar to Dracozu Village, it's a small, tight-knit community that has its own way of life. The villagers there honor the Lord of the Mountain over other Mythical or Legendary pokemon, and it's a high honor to be named the Warden of the Lord of the Mountain.
Satori Mountain - Home of the Lord of the Mountain, Satori. Under joint protection of the Rangers and the Warden from Ordon Village. It's a sanctuary for pokemon, and often a target of poachers because of it.
Rito Village - The central part of the village is similar to botw, but there are more houses and businesses along the road looping around the lake. Home of the Rito and the sixth Gym.
The Flight Range - Home base for the Hebra-Tebantha division of the Rangers. Also the location of the Seventh Gym.
The Forgotten Temple - A historic site of interest for Professor Sun.
Hyrule Castle - The surrounding city is Castletown (not to be confused with Old Castle Town), the largest city in the region. Hyrule Castle itself is a very important building, as it houses the official Elite Four and Champion battles, as well as the Ranger HQ. There is also a section of the castle dedicated to the Battle Chateau, a rather elite set of fields to compete on outside of the Gym Challenge.
Mabe Village - Located southeast of Castletown in Hyrule Field. Home of the Lon Lon Academy for Service Pokemon, although the actual ranch is just outside of town. It's a pretty small village, and the hometown of Elite Four Member Legend and Top Coordinator Fable.
The Lost Woods - A mysterious forest that is rumored to be cursed. Those who wander in never come out, except there are rumors of sightings of Elite Four Member Time navigating the woods freely. Another target for poachers, though the threat of the mist is often deterrent enough.
Akkala Citadel - An intense training ground for trainers. Elite Four Member Warriors spends most of his time here, training and battling alongside top trainers in the region and beyond. There is a small city built around the cliffsides, though the area is much more of a visiting place than a living place.
Tarrey Town - Home of the eighth Gym. Just outside of town, further up the hill is Robbie's research lab, and the leading expert on pokeballs. He has also been recruited by Professor Flora to aid in her research into ancient technology, providing prototype replicas with varied success.

What is your favorite canon muse? How far do go with divergencies when it comes to your canon muse?
Happy Mundaymas - Accepting
What is your favorite canon muse?
Ooo that's a hard question. I really have loved Urbosa so far. She's the first honest-to-god hero I think I've ever played, and I'm enjoying it much more than my younger self ever would have thought. Part of the issue is I've always gravitated towards older female muses and those tend to be on the antagonist's side if they're given agency over themselves and their actions, thank you western media.
Besides Urbosa, my favorite is probably Mrs. Lovett still. I played her the longest, had several long-lasting partnerships that spawned great threads and fics, and still have a lot of affection for her. She was a way to touch into my romantic side in a (admittedly hilariously) safe way, since I was always into exploring the dark side of relationships, but still preferred presenting them in the light of "this is fucked up, and that's why it rules in this context." I also enjoyed the external pressure put on Nellie as a single woman in a time period which made that intensely difficult. While I love interpersonal relationship drama, I also love man versus society plots, so the pressure of "can I make taxes/heat/food expenses this month" was enjoyable to me.
How far do go with divergencies when it comes to your canon muse?
Aside from the cop-out answer of "it depends on the muse/source material" I suppose I find a middle ground? Historically I've played very few characters that had a rigid canon presence, since I tend to play side characters. I also enjoy playing in the corners of muses' lives that canon doesn't touch. Using the above example, the implication in Burton's Sweeney Todd is that she was widowed recently/at an older age, but it's never expressly stated. Instead, I had Albert die off a few years after their wedding, leaving her in hundreds of pounds of debt, even after they sold off most of their assets.
I do generally try to maintain major plot points, though. If I twist happenstance, I usually section it off into its own AU, even if it's a relatively well-known plot twist (Calamity beaten during the first attack in BOTW, for example).
With that said, I have absolutely nothing against canon divergent muses! I think they're great and often outdo the source material! I do appreciate a bio of what gets changed, though, so I don't accidentally reference things from canon that don't happen in your muses' history.

RekishiAU / Historical AU DTIYS Challenge - Rōnin Link (via instagram)
Here is my entry for xino_oyo’s Historical AU DTIYS Challenge on instagram. I really really love their Historical AU, the art designs and the lore that they have created for this AU and I just THRIVE in this kind of content.
Also....this was meant to be a ‘simple’ drawing cuz I felt the need to just vibe drawing. But over time, my braincells went overboard and here we are.
I should have learnt by now that I almost NEVER make ‘simple drawings’ lmao
BONUS: I added layers upon layers of details on this....just cuz that’s how I sometimes go when I get too deep in art making...

I realized that I never made a proper post about the Gerudo Twilight au. So here it goes.
As punishment for Ganondorf and his crimes against Hyrule, the entirety of the Gerudo people's were forced from the desert and made to live as exiles.
By the point of oot, the Gerudo are already theves, but with their exile they turn to that full time. Many Gerudo, fleeing persecution integrated themselves into the Hyrule society. Kept their heads down, and did their best to survive. A separate group became nomadic and live on the outskirts of their traditional homeland. For the purpose of the au, the cultural tie to being Gerudo is strong and that heritage is passed down from mother to daughter even in the Gerudo living in Hyrule.
This has led to a lot of tension between the Gerudo and Hyrule.
Since Ganondorf, there have not been any kings.
Fast forward x number of years since oot to they to TP, Twilight who was fostered by the people of Ordon Village had NO IDEA that he is Gerudo. He was a very young child when he was found, and believes himself to be just another Hylian (having no frame of reference being the only non Ordonian in the village).
The tensions between Hyrule and the Gerudo are still not good. It's been a LONG TIME since oot, at least a five hundred years, and general Hyruleian people have forgotten that nasty history. People with the red hair are not common, but can be found interspersed in the population (see Thelma).
The events of Twilight Princess come to pass and Twilight makes a trip back into the desert and is set upon by the nomadic population of Gerudo living in the high/lowlands.
(had wave stuff I haven't figured out yet)
He is named the king of the Gerudo.
Twilight becoming king marks a turning point in Gerudo/Hylian relations.
For starters he brokers the return of the Gerudo homeland to his people. We also start to see the begining of some of the things we can recognize in BOTW. Sand seals for instance are being domesticated. Gerudo town itself is a ruin after so long of being uninhabited, but towards the middle of his reign it starts to be rebuilt in it's historic settlement area.
Things are not perfect, there are a number of fights between the Gerudo led by Twilight and the Hylians (not led by dusk I should say. But boundaries are contentious things) over the course of this time.
I joke a lot about Twilight being a reluctant king, but the truth is he chose to accept the role. It took some convincing on the part of the woman who would come to be his primary advisor, and he did have to face challenges and trials by his people before he became the King.
Now, like I said, it's been about 500-600 years since the last king Ganondorf made his grab for power. The Gerudo despite being exiles have survived without a king for a long time. A good number of the Gerudo women don't want a king. But it's been so long without even a whisper of a boy being born to any Gerudo, integrated with Hylian society or otherwise (remember a new King is supposed to be born every 100 years) that people have started to believe that the lack of a king is a punishment by the goddesses themselves. For a lot of the Women, the idea of a true Gerudo King is, interesting even if he's not nessicerrily wanted.
Now the fic "A Wolf in Kings Clothing" covers the chain finding out that Twilight is king of the Gerudo as well as looking more in depth about his becoming king of the Gerudo. It also tangentially covers one if the big defining moments in the early shift in Gerudo/Hylian relations.
Other important things regarding this au, Twilight has a pet Ordon goat, named Colin.

Do you have any favourite periods in history to draw inspiration from when it comes to aspects of your Ancient AU/Sleeping Tomb AU?
I know there will be some nerdass nerds who will get mad at me for saying this but ancient era au is not inspired by any particular historical period, instead it picks things out which are suitable for respective regions and mixes them with fantasy elements and aesthetic of the sheikah tech designs of botw. It does borrow some elements from historical periods but its different depending on the culture. I will say tho that zelda's aesthetic, if u know what to look for, ended up resembling 13th century slavic elements. However someone like link ended up being inspired by modern things, like the shape of his clothes was inspired by the silhouettes of cropped modern kimonos. Architecturally the ancient era is a bit of a clusterfuck (I know I haven't shown enough for yall to know what I'm talking about) but it's too modern medieval fantasy to even call it inspired by a historical period
Sleeping tomb au is inspired by ghibli’s nausicaa and tales from earthsea. And again instead of being inspired by a historical period it takes inspiration from things and places which are suitable for its setting. So I don't really even know how to answer

So,
for your wonderful Hyrule University AU, do you have any ideas about the four champions in BotW or Sidon?
(maybe Sidon could be that coffee barista that the gang bump into like twice IDK!)
I'm curious XD
(I'm sorry if you've already addressed inclusion of these characters and I haven't seen, hopefully this isn't too annoying!)
also I love your art and the AU is such a fun idea, and your design for link is just amazing!
Hiya! Idk how you formatted your ask to have a bar on the left, but it looks very cool!
Also in my mind (haven't properly made a comic about it or anything yet), I have the four champions as historical figures that Link will learn about through his archaeology courses, as legendary pilots of the divine beasts (whose ruins are the subject of Link's archeo thesis project). For Sidon, I'm not sure. Coffee barista Sidon would be so cute though! Maybe he has insight to offer for Link's research, since he looks suspiciously related to one of the four champions...
Also no worries! I appreciate you asking, I've definitely had a bunch of people ask about the champions and sidon but it's not annoying at all! If anything it goes into my secret mental tally on whether or not I should actually make a comic or something about them in the future haha (Pipit joined the AU only because I got multiple people asking about him so, there's that!)
