James Allan Mollison was born on April 19th 1905 in Glasgow.
Graeme Obree, Chris Hoy and a certain steam train have all bee called The Flying Scotsman in their time, but the original title goes to a man who actually did fly, Jim Mollison.
Jim would go on to become a pioneering aviator, breaking records for long distance flights. His marriage to fellow aviator Amy Johnson also saw them lauded as the golden couple during their time together.
Born the only child of Hector Alexander Mollison, a consultant engineer, and Thomasina Macnee Addie. He was educated at The Glasgow Academy and Edinburgh Academy and took an early interest in flying and obtaining his Royal Air Force (RAF) Short Service Commission at 18, he was the youngest officer in the service, and upon completion of training was posted to India, flying on active service in Waziristan.
At the age of 22, Mollison became a flying instructor at Central Flying School (CFS), again setting the record for being the youngest in this role. Shortly after, he transferred to the RAF Reserve and devoted his time to civil aviation. In 1928-29, he served as an instructor with the South Australian Aero Club in Adelaide, leaving that position to become a pilot with Eyre Peninsular Airways and Australian National Airways.
In July-August 1931, Mollison set a record time of eight days, 19 hours for a flight from Australia to England, and in March 1932, a record for flying from England to South Africa in 4 days, 17 hours flying a de Havilland Puss Moth.
Mollison eventually served in the ATA Air Transport Auxiliary in the Second World War. In June 1941 Mollison and an ATA crew delivered Cunliffe-Owen OA-1 G-AFMB to Fort Lamy, Chad. The aircraft was fitted out as a personal transport for General De Gaulle.
Mollison was feted in London and New York, and could lead the life he had always wanted. “I am a night bird,” he once said. “Life and enjoyment begin when daylight fades. Cocktail bars and clubs, music, beautiful women— that’s living. Daylight comes to me as an interval for sleeping until an afternoon drink helps to bring on another evening.” His autobiography was called “Playboy of the Air”.
When Mollison and Amy Jonson married in 1932 the press were delighted, they were dubbed The Flying Sweethearts by the press and public. . The match was was perfect for the publicity machine, and the two of them set about devising new aviation records: in 1933 they flew together from Wales to New York and had a ticker-tape reception in Wall Street. But marriage did not last long or end well. It has sometimes been assumed that the match was a simple career move on Mollison's part: certainly he did not halt his relationships with other women. Nor did it limit his drinking. As I said earlier, he got the tag “ the Flying Scotsman” but those close to him called him “Brandy Jim”.
As well as his Playboy lifestyle and heavy drinking Jim Mollison was also quick with his fists, and a manager from the Grosvenor House Hotel was reported as saying ” We've had the most awful night here. Jim Mollison and Amy Johnson had a fearful row and he's beaten her up. The bathroom looks like a slaughterhouse.” The marriage officially ended in 1938.
Mollison kept flying, and – like Johnson – flew in a non-combat role in WWII. Both of them flew in the Air Transport Auxiliary. Johnson died in 1941 after baling out of aircraft. Mollison had at least one close escape, when his plane was shot up, but survived the war.
Mollison later settled in London and ran a public house. He married Maria Clasina E. Kamphuis in 1949 at the Maidenhead Register Office. Mollison continued to abused alcohol and in 1953, the Civil Aviation Authority Medical Board revoked his pilot's licence. The couple separated but Maria bought the Carisbrooke Hotel in Surbiton for him – a temperance hotel.
Suffering from acute alcoholism, he was admitted to The Priory, Roehampton, southwest London, where he died on 30 October 1959, the official cause of death was pneumonia, but unofficially it was thought to be alcoholic epilepsy.

Random list of Umineko character ages as of 1986:
- this is mostly headcanon. By this, I mean the ages for the adults - we don’t have canon years or birth for anyone but the cousins, this is just my estimation. That's why the year next to their names are in italics - I don't actually know what they are.
- I’m less surprised at the age difference between the siblings, and more so at Kinzo’s fertility. He was in his early fifties (at the most) when Rosa was born, possibly younger. He had to be around adulthood (18-21) by the time the Kanto Earthquake (1923) happens - so at his oldest he’s born in 1899/1900 and at his youngest, he’d be born in 1905.
- also, I’m working off the assumption that Kumasawa, Nanjo, Genji, and Kinzo are relatively in the same age range (their eighties).
The Adults:
Kinzo: 87 (Aug 17, 1899)
Krauss: 55 (Feb 26, 1931)
Natsuhi: 50 (Jul 30th, 1936)
Eva: 52, turning 53 (Oct 21st, 1933).
Hideyoshi: 56, turning 57 (November 25th, 1929)
Rudolf: 45 (September 4, 1941)
Kyrie: 44, turning 45 (November 8th, 1941)
Rosa: 34 (June 3rd, 1952)
The Cousins:
George: 23 (March 16th, 1963), works with Hideyoshi as an aide
Battler: 18 (July 15th, 1968), 3rd Year High School
Jessica: 18 (August 25th, 1968), 3rd Year High School
Maria: 9 (March 29th, 1977), Fourth Grade, Elementary
Ange: 6 (June 17th, 1980), Starts Elementary next year
The Staff:
Genji: 85 (June 10, 1901), head butler of the Ushiromiya Mansion
Nanjo: 84 (April 5th 1902), Kinzo's physician
Kumasawa: 83 (July 19th, 1903), servant
Shannon: 16 (May 25th, 1970), servant
Kanon: 15, turning 16 (October 6th, 1970), servant
Gohda: 49, turning 50 (December 10th, 1936), Cook
*I placed Kanon at age fifteen, because I'm working off the assumption that Jessica is rounding his age a little bit when introducing him to Battler. His birthday is literally two days away, it would be easier to just say sixteen. There's always the possibility that he's turning seventeen, but wouldn't Jessica have said they were a year apart, then?
*also, Kanon calls Shannon 'nee-san'. Though it's mentioned by Shannon they aren't blood-related and Kanon does so out of respect towards Shannon, again I'm operating under the idea that he's actually a few months younger than her.
*Considering Gohda was initially meant to have an affair with Natsuhi before the concept was scrapped, I'm putting him around the same age as her.

By Rachel May
Rachel May, English professor and author, came upon Elizabeth Wagner Reed’s book about a decade ago, on Reed’s daughter’s website.
Published April 22, 2023Updated April 24, 2023, 10:50 a.m. ET
This article is part of Overlooked, a series of obituaries about remarkable people whose deaths, beginning in 1851, went unreported in The Times.
In 1992, the geneticist Elizabeth Wagner Reed self-published “American Women in Science Before the Civil War,” a book highlighting 22 19th-century scientists. One of them was Eunice Newton Foote, who wrote a paper on her remarkable discovery about greenhouse gases, “a phenomenon which is of concern to us even now,” Reed wrote.
Foote was forgotten soon after the paper was read aloud by a male scientist at a conference in 1856 and published the following year. A male scientist was eventually credited with the discovery.
Like Foote, Reed herself fell into obscurity, a victim of the erasure of female scientists that the historian Margaret Rossiter coined the Matilda Effect — named for the sociologist Matilda Joslyn Gage, whose 1870 pamphlet, “Woman as Inventor,” condemned the idea that women did not have the skills to succeed in the field.
Reed, however, made significant contributions to the sciences.
She wrote a landmark study about intellectual disability genetics, helped found a field of population genetics and wrote many more papers on botany, the biology of women and sexism in science.
Reed persisted in her research even when she found herself a widow with a toddler during World War II. By the time of her death, in 1996, in spite of publishing more than 34 scholarly papers, public school curriculums and two books, the record didn’t bend in her favor. It wasn’t until 2020, when the scientist and scholar Marta Velasco Martín published a paper on Reed, that her legacy was resurrected.
Reed was born Elizabeth Wagner on Aug. 27, 1912, in Baguio, in what was then called the Philippine Islands, to Catherine (Cleland) and John Ovid Wagner. John was from Ohio and worked in construction there at the time; Catherine, from Northern Ireland, was working in the Philippines as a nurse.
The family later settled on a farm in Ohio, where Elizabeth grew up picking raspberries “from dawn to dusk,” her son William Reed said in a phone interview.
Tumblr media
“She learned how to work really hard,” he added. “I remember her saying how much she loved school, partly because it wasn’t doing farm work.”
At the end of one summer, he said, she used some of her earnings to buy a book about wildflowers in Ohio — “her first purchase was a scientific book.”
She would go on to cultivate wildflowers in her backyard as an adult, volunteer at a wildflower arboretum in Minnesota and write about botany in scientific articles and in educational materials for children. Reed’s daughter, Catherine Reed, told Martín that her mother “loved nature, especially plants, and, wanted to be a scientist from a very early age.”
Tumblr media
In 1933, Reed earned her bachelor’s degree at Ohio State University, where she also earned a master’s in 1934 and a Ph.D. in plant physiology in 1936. She put herself through school with a scholarship and by washing dishes and working in the cafeteria. In 1939 and 1940, she published her first two papers, one about the effects of insecticides on bean plants and the other about how various types of dusts affect the rate of water loss in yellow coleus plants by night and day.
In 1940, she married a fellow scientist, James Otis Beasley, and had a son, John, with him just after James left to fight in World War II in 1942. When her husband was killed in the war the next year, she supported herself and her son by teaching at five different universities. “The first part of her life,” William Reed said, “was sheer determination.”
She began working with the geneticist Sheldon C. Reed, whom she married in 1946, and together they helped found the field of Drosophila population genetics, which uses fruit flies as a simple and economical method of studying genetics in a laboratory while offering important insights into similar species.
Soon after, the couple moved to Minnesota, where Sheldon was hired as the director of the Dight Institute of Human Genetics at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Elizabeth was denied a job at the university, which cited rules against nepotism.
The Reeds went on to write a book about intellectual disabilities that analyzed data from 80,000 people and their families; the study, they said, was “one of the largest genetic investigations so far completed.”
They found that disabilities could be caused by genetic or environmental factors and could therefore be heritable. They also proposed — to controversy that still exists today — that such disabilities were preventable through education of the general public and voluntary sterilization or birth control of potential parents with low I.Q.s.
Though Elizabeth’s name was listed first as author, a letter of acknowledgment calling the couple’s work “truly magnificent” referred to them as “Dr. and Mrs. Reed.”
Reed was quite aware that her husband was receiving more credit, her son William said, but she never let it embitter her. In 1950, however, she published a paper on sexism in the sciences based on her study of 70 women working in the field. It found that marriage and childbirth decreased their productivity and sometimes even dissuaded them from continuing their careers. It led her to mentor women in the field through the advocacy group Graduate Women in Science.
“She was a scientist before it was popular for women to become scientists,” Nancy Segal, a psychologist at California State University known for her study of twins, said in an interview, “and she was a great role model for so many of us women postdocs at the time.”
In writing “American Women in Science Before the Civil War,”Reed corresponded with archivists and scoured card catalogs, journals and proceedings of associations and societies. In addition to recognizing Eunice Foote’s work almost two decades before other scientists did, the book included biographies of, among others, the astronomer Maria Mitchell; Ellen Smith Tupper, who was known as the “Queen Bee of Iowa” for her study of that insect; and the entomologist Mary Townsend.
Reed wrote that it was a testimony to the strengths of these women that they pursued science despite the fact that they were “often denied entry to colleges and unable to attain professional status.”
Tumblr media
Reed also supported teaching children about science so that they would have the tools to solve what she called the “current crises of exploding populations and deteriorating environments.” She published papers about teaching proper scientific methods in schools and created curriculums with the University of Minnesota.
“Classrooms always house some living organisms,” she wrote, tongue-in-cheek, in the Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science in 1969. “In many, unfortunately, all are of a single species, Homo sapiens. The population consists of many immature species (children) and a few adults, usually female (teachers). This makes for a certain homogeneity, but it can be alleviated by introduction of other living species, animal or plant.”
The fact that Reed was, like so many of her predecessors, lost to history is indicative of the pervasive sexism of her era. But women today continue to face hurdles in entering scientific fields. A report from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology this year found that “the underrepresentation of women in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields continues to persist,” with women making up only 28 percent of the STEM work force.
Like Reed, her daughter, Catherine, was a scientist, having earned a Ph.D. in ecology, but she ultimately became so disillusioned that she held a ceremonial burning of her degree and instead turned to artwork and championing her mother’s legacy. She published her mother’s book on American women in science on her website in about 2010. She died in 2021 at 73.
Elizabeth Wagner Reed died at 83 on July 14, 1996, most likely of cancer. She recognized her symptoms, but, knowing what the treatments would be like and, to her mind, the probable outcome, she never sought a diagnosis. (Sheldon Reed died in 2003.)
William Reed said there was no joy like taking a walk with his mother, who could describe every plant and animal they passed. She and Sheldon were avid bird-watchers (and occasional polka dancers), and the family spent many vacations at Lake Itasca, Minn., relaxing under old-growth Norway Pines.
Reed’s favorite flower was the showy lady’s slipper, the state flower of Minnesota, an orchid notoriously difficult to cultivate, like the careers of many of the women she wrote about. Its Latin name is Cypripedium reginae, with reginae meaning queen.

Luke 2:5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. Luke 2:6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, Luke 2:7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. Luke 2:8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. Luke 2:9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. Luke 2:10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Luke 2:11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. Luke 2:12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Luke 2:13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, Luke 2:14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2:15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” Luke 2:16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.

Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ Luke 15:7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. Luke 15:8 “Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? In the 2012 television series Touch, season 1, episode 9, "Music of the Spheres", Jacob "Jake" Bohm, a mute boy who mysteriously feels the suffering of those along his path and aims to positively adjust their fates, is revealed as possibly one of the "Lamed Vav Tzadikim" by a Hasidic man. In the second season of Touch, Jake and other people who have special gifts are referred to as members of the 36; throughout the episodes they are exploited for their capabilities and are hunted down by one who believes they hold too much power. The final episode features consideration of the Kabbalah and the mystical roots of the legend of the 36. Lamedvavnik (Yiddish: למד־װאָװניק), is the Yiddish term for one of the 36 humble righteous ones or Tzadikim mentioned in kabbalah or Jewish mysticism. According to this teaching, at any given time there are at least 36 holy persons in the world who are Tzadikim. These holy people are hidden; i.e., nobody knows who they are. According to some versions of the story, they themselves may not know who they are. For the sake of these 36 hidden saints, God preserves the world even if the rest of humanity has degenerated to the level of total barbarism. This is similar to the story of Sodom and Gomorrah in the Hebrew Bible, where God told Abraham that he would spare the city of Sodom if there was a quorum of at least 10 righteous men. Since nobody knows who the Lamedvavniks are, not even themselves, every Jew should act as if he or she might be one of them; i.e., lead a holy and humble life and pray for the sake of fellow human beings. It is also said that one of these 36 could potentially be the Jewish Messiah if the world is ready for them to reveal themselves. Otherwise, they live and die as an ordinary person. Whether the person knows they are the potential Messiah is debated. (Wikipedia)

"I hope you remind yourself of what you are, and what you are not.
You are not damaged goods. You are not your mistakes. You’re not a result of the things you thought you could have done better, or times you felt you chose the wrong path, instead of the right one. You’re not somebody else’s opinion of you. You are wiser because you’ve made those mistakes.
You are someone who’s brave enough to take chances. You are someone who was rained on over and over again, and kept on putting one foot in front of the other.
I think that’s so much better than never having made a mistake, never having messed up or having failed. I think that the pain we go through when we make mistakes makes us stronger.
And I think that being rained on over and over and over again can actually make us clean." - Taylor Swift - 1989 World Tour - Clean Speech - Tokyo Dome

August 22, 2019 (Summer #3), August 2018 (Summer #2), August 2017 (Summer #1)… Is Taylor Swift launching her new album website on Timeless.com? Konstantinos Zournas OnlineDomain.com August 22, 2017 Taylor Swift is probably preparing the launch of her new album on a new website that will be on Timeless.com. “Timeless” will probably be the name of the new Taylor Swift album and the name of the first single that might be coming out very soon, even today. (Some people think that the new album is going to be called Eclipse.) Update: rumors now say that the new single is going to be released on Friday. The domain name Timeless.com was probably bought by the artist in July. The domain was sold for $150,000 in 2015 and it was auctioned for $52,900 2016. (it is not clear if the domain changed hands after the 2016 auction) The domain name was recently for sale again and the seller of the domain name to Taylor Swift was someone from Denmark. The domain name was purchased for an undisclosed amount. (Timeless.com was last seen for sale at $140,000.) Meanwhile Taylor Swift’s official website at TaylorSwift.com has been completely blank together with all her social media accounts that were emptied of content this past weekend. Her Facebook page, Twitter account, Instagram account and Tumblr account were all emptied. Some people even suggested that the 27-year-old superstar may have been the victim of a hack. The lander on Timeless.com is the only clue except from the tail of what is coming soon by the artist. The domain name Timeless.com is registered at GoDaddy.com but the owner is not yet known as the owner data is hidden behind whois privacy. UPDATE: Taylor Swift is launching her new album called Reputation on November 10 2017. It seems that the timeless.com domain buyer was someone other than TS. https://onlinedomain.com/2017/08/22/domain-name-news/taylor-swift-launching-new-album-website-timeless-com/

10:10:29…Whenever you're around, it's Timeless…
"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion’s starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don’t see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it’s not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it’s always there – fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know, none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge – they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I’ve got a sneaky feeling you’ll find that love actually is all around." - David (Love Actually)

CANON ENCANTO TIMELINE
(or pretty damn close)
Now that Luisa’s birthday is finally confirmed, my timeline is complete! We don’t yet know Alma and Pedro’s birthdays, but those don’t hold sway as strongly over the timeline for understanding the major events that shaped the Encanto or for fic construction imo, so I’m willing to add those later. I’ve added an estimate of their years of birth, at least, for reference - Pedro was for sure 26 when he died, and Alma was supposed to be 75 in the film.
Given the fact that the Thousand Days’ War began on Oct 17, it’s pretty damn close enough to canon for me that this must have been the same day the triplets were born - so, 1899. The only guess I really had to make here was Félix’s year of birth - supposedly he’s older than the triplets, and since Agustín is two years younger - per the fact that the closest June 19th Wednesday to 1899 was in 1901 - I thought two years older was fitting. The film then takes place in 1950 - the triplets are 50 in May of that year, to turn 51 in October, and Alma says it has been fifty years since the Encanto was created, as well, if you want to take her literally.
I chose the kids’ years of birth based off of how old they were supposed to be during the events of the film. Many of them will age up in the months following, but regardless, their canon ages match. I’ve included a few real-life Colombian war dates, for reference, and noted a few leap years for the purpose of counting Bruno’s “days without a vision” (days in isolation) and looking for patterns in a few places. There are a few details in here that are just for me, but I find it really helps me to draw a full picture of what happened and when, even if those moments seem insignificant to you all. Enjoy! Feel free to reference this timeline when writing your banging fics if you so desire!

October 17, 1904 - Triplets’ fifth birthday, triplets are - to everyone’s surprise! - granted their gifts (leap year)
August 7, 1928 - Isabela is born (leap year)

March 6, 1950 - Mirabel turns 15, Day 3652
May 21, 1950 (Sun.) - Antonio’s 5th birthday and gift ceremony, house cracks visibly, Day 3728, Félix 52, Triplets 50, Agustín 48, Isabela 21, Dolores 21, Luisa 19, Camilo 15, Mirabel 15
May 22, 1950 (Mon.) - Mirabel goes looking for answers, Luisa starts losing her gift, Mirabel enters Bruno’s room and finds the vision tablet, Isabela’s engagement dinner, Mirabel finds Bruno, Bruno gives her an updated vision - his first in ten years, Isabela finds her power, Casita falls, the capullo cracks open, Day 0
May 23, 1950 (Tues.) - Mirabel is found by the river by Abuela, Bruno returns to the family, the rebuilding begins (technically in canon the rebuilding is also completed on this day, the Miracle is returned when Mirabel installs the doorknob, and the new family photo is taken - I personally cannot suspend my disbelief THAT far lol magical realism be damned, and choose to think it took months - but in canon this is true)
1952 - leap year
1956 - leap year
1958 - La Violencia ends

On April 19th in 1905, Jim Mollison, the pioneering Scottish aviator, was born in Glasgow.
Mollison held many individual records for distance, endurance, and speed flying, and jointly set several others with his wife, the aviatrix Amy Johnson. In 1932, he became the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic from East to West. In the same year, his wife broke his record for the fastest flight from London to Cape Town.
Mollison and Johnson were “the” celebrity couple of the day. The picture in, August 1933, shows first Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, aviator Amelia Earhart, Jim and Amy Johnson)and President Roosevelt in Hyde Park, New York. Note the dressing on Mollisons face, a week before the photograph was taken, the couple crashed in a Connecticut swamp while trying to break the world long distance flight record.

• Jean Moulin
Jean Pierre Moulin was a French civil servant who served as the first President of the National Council of the Resistance during World War II.
Jean Moulin was born at 6 Rue d'Alsace in Béziers, Hérault on June 20th, 1899, son of Antoine-Émile Moulin and Blanche Élisabeth Pègue. He was the grandson of an insurgent of 1851. His father was a lay teacher at the Université Populaire and a Freemason at the lodge Action Sociale. Jean Pierre Moulin was baptised on August 6th, 1899 in the church of Saint-Vincentin in Saint-Andiol (Bouches-du-Rhône), the village his parents came from. He spent an uneventful childhood in the company of his sister, Laure, and his brother Joseph. Joseph died after an illness in 1907. At Lycée Henri IV in Béziers, Jean was an average student. In 1917, he enrolled at the Faculty of Law of Montpellier, where he was not a brilliant student. However, thanks to the influence of his father, he was appointed as attaché to the cabinet of the prefect of Hérault. Moulin was mobilised in April 1918 as part of the age class of 1919, the last class to be mobilised in France. He was assigned to the 2nd Engineer Regiment of Montpellier. At the beginning of September, after an accelerated training, he headed with his regiment to the front in the Vosges, where he was posted in the village of Socourt. His regiment was preparing to go to the front lines as part of the attack planned by Foch for November 13th, but the Armistice was signed on November 11th.
Although Moulin did not fight directly on the front lines, he nevertheless was in a position to observe the horrors of war. He saw its aftermath on the battle fields, the devastation of villages and the state of prisoners of war. He helped to bury the war dead in the area around Metz. While still enlisted after the War, he was posted successively to Seine-et-Oise, Verdun and Chalon-sur-Saône. He worked as a carpenter, a digger and later a telephonist for the 7th and 9th Engineer Regiments. He was de-mobilised in November and, on November 4th, 1919, immediately resumed his post as attache at the prefecture of Hérault. After World War I, Moulin resumed his studies of law. His position as attache allowed him to finance his university studies as well as providing a useful apprenticeship in politics and government. He obtained his law degree in July 1921, He then entered the prefectural administration as chief of staff to the deputy of Savoie in 1922 and then sous-préfet of Albertville from 1925 to 1930. After his proposal of marriage was rejected by Jeanette Auran, Moulin, aged 27, married a 19-year-old professional singer, Marguerite Cerruti, in the town of Betton-Bettonet in September 1926. The marriage did not last long. Cerruti quickly became bored with the marriage, and Moulin responded by offering her further singing lessons in Paris, where she disappeared for two days. Moulin was appointed sous-préfet of Châteaulin, Brittany in 1930, but he also drew political cartoons for the newspaper Le Rire under the pseudonym Romanin. In 1932, Pierre Cot, a Radical Socialist politician, named Moulin his second in command or chef adjoint when he was serving as Foreign Minister under Paul Doumer's presidency. In 1933, Moulin was appointed sous-préfet of Thonon-les-Bains, parallel to his function of head of Cot's cabinet of in the Air Ministry under President Albert Lebrun. In 1936, he was once more named chief of cabinet of Cot's Air Ministry of the Popular Front. In that capacity, Moulin was involved in Cot's efforts to assist the Second Spanish Republic by sending it planes and pilots.
He became France's youngest préfet in the Aveyron département, based in the commune of Rodez, in January 1937. It has been claimed that during the Spanish Civil War, Moulin assisted with the shipment of arms from the Soviet Union to Spain. A more commonly-accepted version of events is that he used his position in the French air ministry to deliver planes to the Spanish Republican forces. In January 1939, Moulin was appointed prefect of the Eure-et-Loir department. He was based in Chartres. After war against Germany was declared, he asked multiple times to be demoted because " his place is not at the rear, at the head of a rural departement". Against the opinion of the Minister of the Interior, he asked to be transferred to the military school of Issy-Les-Moulineaux, near Paris. The minister forced him to return to Chartres, where he had trouble ensuring the safety of the population. When the Germans got close to Chartres, he wrote to his parents, "If the Germans who are able to do anything make me say dishonorable words, you already know, it is not the truth". He was arrested by the Germans on June 17th, 1940, as he refused to sign a false declaration that three Senegalese tirailleurs had committed atrocities, killing civilians in La Taye. In fact, those civilians had been killed by German bombings. Beaten and imprisoned because he refused to comply, Moulin attempted suicide by cutting his throat with a piece of broken glass. That left him with a scar he would often hide with a scarf, which is the image of Jean Moulin remembered today. He was found by a guard and taken to hospital for treatment. Because he was a Radical, he was dismissed by the Vichy regime, led by Marshal Philippe Pétain on November 2nd, 1940, along with all other left-wing préfets. He then began writing his diary, First Battle, in which he relates his resistance against the Nazis in Chartres, which was later published at the Liberation and prefaced by de Gaulle.
Having decided not to collaborate, Moulin left Chartres for Saint-Andiol, Bouches-du-Rhône, to study and join the French Resistance, and he decided to negotiate with Free France. He started to use the name Joseph Jean Mercier and went to Marseille, where he met other resistants, including Henri Frenay and Antoine Sachs. Moulin reached London in September 1941 after travelling through Spain and Portugal, and he was received in October by De Gaulle, who wrote about Moulin, "A great man. Great in every way". Moulin summarised the state of the French Resistance to de Gaulle. Part of the Resistance considered him too ambitious, but de Gaulle had confidence in his network and skills. He gave Moulin the assignment of co-ordinating and unifying the various Resistance groups, a hard mission that would take time and effort to accomplish. On January 1st, 1942, Moulin parachuted into the Alpilles and met with the leaders of the resistance groups, under the codenames Rex and Max. He succeeded to the extent that the first three of these resistance leaders and their groups came together to form the United Resistance Movement ( Mouvements Unis de la Résistance, MUR) in January 1943. The next month, Moulin returned to London, accompanied by Charles Delestraint, who led the new Armée secrète, which grouped the MUR's military wings together. Moulin left London on March 21st, 1943, with orders to form the Conseil national de la Résistance (CNR), a difficult task since the five resistance movements involved, besides the three already in the MUR, wanted to retain their independence. The first meeting of the CNR took place in Paris on May 27th, 1943. Some historians consider Moulin one of the most important figures in the French Resistance because of his actions in unifying and organizing the various resistance groups, which had previously been operating in an independent and uncoordinated manner. He was also instrumental in obtaining the cooperation of the Communist resistance groups, who had been reluctant to accept De Gaulle as their leader, because Moulin was known as a left-wing republican.
On June 21st, 1943, he was arrested at a meeting with fellow Resistance leaders in the home of Frédéric Dugoujon in Caluire-et-Cuire, a suburb of Lyon. He was, along with the other Resistance leaders, sent to Montluc Prison in Lyon in which he was detained until the beginning of July. Tortured daily in Lyon by Klaus Barbie, the head of the Gestapo there, and later more briefly in Paris, Moulin never revealed anything to his captors. According to witnesses, Moulin and his men had their fingernails removed using hot needles as spatulas. In addition, his fingers were placed on the door frames and the doors were closed again and again until his knuckles were broken. They then tightened the handcuffs until they penetrated his skin and broke the bones in his wrists. Because he still refused to speak, they beat him until his face was unrecognizable and he fell into a coma. Afterwards, Barbie ordered Moulin to be placed in an office and to be shown to all members of the Resistance not to collaborate with the Nazis. The last time he was seen alive, he was still in a coma and his head was yellow, swollen and wrapped in bandages, according to the description given by Christian Pineau, fellow prisoner and another member of the Resistance. He is believed to have died near Metz on a train headed for Germany. He was reported to have died on July 8th, 1943 at the age of 44. There has been much research, speculation, judicial scrutiny and media coverage of who betrayed Jean Moulin and the circumstances of his death. Klaus Barbie alleged that suicide was the cause, and Moulin biographer Patrick Marnham supports that explanation. René Hardy was caught and released by the Gestapo, who had followed him to the meeting at the doctor's house. There have been many suppositions in the postwar years that Moulin was Communist. No hard evidence has ever backed up that claim.
Ashes that were presumed to be those of Jean Moulin were buried in Le Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris and later transferred to the Pantheon on December 19th, 1964. France's French education curriculum commemorates Moulin as a symbol of the French resistance and a model of civic virtue, moral rectitude and patriotism. As of 2015, Jean Moulin was the fifth most popular name for a French school, and as of 2016 his is the third most popular French street name of which 98 percent are male. In 1967, the Centre national Jean-Moulin de Bordeaux was created in Bordeaux. Its archives contain documents on the Second World War and the Resistance. The Centre provides pedagogical supports and research material on the involvement of Jean Moulin in the Resistance. In 1993, commemorative French 2, 100 and 500 franc coins were issued, showing a partial image of Moulin against the Croix de Lorraine and using a fedora-and-scarf photograph, which is well recognised in France.

Julia Wallace
Tumblr media
May 15, 2021
Julia Wallace (maiden name Dennis) was born in on April 28, 1861 and married a man named William Herbert Wallace in March 1914. William was born in Millom, Cumberland on August 29, 1878.
Julia and her new husband moved to Liverpool, England in 1915 where William obtained a job as a collections agent with the Prudential Assurance Company. The couple settled into a district known as Anfield. Willam also lectured chemistry classes part time at Liverpool Technical College during the 1920′s.
On Monday, January 19th, 1931 Willam was attending a meeting at the Liverpool Central Chess Club. While he was there he was given a message which had been received by telephone 25 minutes before he had gotten there. William was supposed to call a number at an address of 25 Menlove Gardens East, Liverpool at 7:30 pm the next evening to discuss insurance with a man who went by the name of “R.M. Qualtrough.”
The following night William went to the address at 7:30 pm only to discover that there was no Menlove Gardens East, there were only North, South and West. William asked around, even asking a police officer for directions by no one was able to help him.
William searched for this mysterious address for about 45 minutes before giving up and returning home. The next door neighbours, a couple named the Johnstons were going out that evening and had seen William standing in the alley complaining that he had been locked out of his house and could not get into the front or back door. The Johnstons watched William try the back door one more time to which was opened now. Inside the house, William found his wife Julia beaten to death in the sitting room.
William made two voluntary statements in the coming weeks but was never intensively questioned by the police. He was asked to attend CID headquarters every day and had to answer specific questions like if the Wallaces had a maid and whether he had stopped to talk to anyone on his way back from trying to locate 25 Menlove Gardens East.
The police discovered that the phone call to the chess club requesting these specific instructions for William was made from a telephone box 400 yards from the Wallace’s house. The person who had taken this phone call was quite certain that the person who called wasn’t William Wallace himself.
However, that didn’t stop the police from suspecting William and then eventually arrested him for the murder of his wife, Julia.
William had used the tram to travel to the fake address and police thought it was possible that William had had enough time to murder his life and arrive at the spot where he boarded the tram. They attempted to recreate this timeline to see if it was possible by having a young detective go through a “fake murder” and sprint all the way to the tram stop. It is suspected that a man of William’s age would not have been able to accomplish this as he was an ailing 52 years old.
The police originally suspected that the murder took place at 8 pm on the night of January 20th, 1931, however this was later changed to just after 6:30 pm though no one knows why this was changed as there was no known new evidence to suggest the murder took place at this time.
Forensic examination of the crime scene led them to suspect that whoever had murdered Julia Wallace likely had gotten her blood all over them, given how brutal the nature of the crime was. They found no blood on the suit William was wearing on the night of the murder.
The police found a mackintosh found under Julia that they believed a naked William used to shield himself from getting any blood on him during the attack. They also examined the bath and drains in the house, which had not been used recently and there was no trace of blood in the house except from a single small clot in the toilet.
The evidence was circumstantial and a milk boy and paper girl both gave a statement that they had spoken to Julia on the evening of her death after William had left to find this mysterious address. Both of their testimonies were considered unreliable.
Despite all of this, William Wallace was convicted of murder and sentenced to death. Many said that William was very calm during and after the discovery of his murdered wife and the police did not think his behaviour was typical for someone who had just lost their spouse.
The conviction was later overturned but William died of health problems two years later on February 26, 1933. Nobody named Qualtrough was ever connected to the case, and no one knows who the mysterious caller at the chess club was instructing William to go to a non-existent address.

Today is a very special day, it’s Marilyn’s Birthday! Can you believe that if she were still alive,  Marilyn would have been turning 94 years old today – just two months younger than the Queen herself! With each year I always try and write a special post about this amazing woman, who has helped me so much and achieved more than anyone could have imagined in her 36 years. Therefore, I decided to write 94 facts about the Birthday Girl – some you may know, some you may not, all in the hope that genuine things will be learnt and the real Marilyn will be more understood and appreciated.

6. Starred in 30 films – her last being uncompleted.
7. Favourite of her own performances was as Angela Phinlay in The Asphalt Jungle (1950)
8. Winner of three Golden Globes; two for World Film Favourite – Female in 1954 and 1962 and one for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical for her performance as Sugar Kane in Some Like It Hot (1959) in 1960.
9. Her idol was the first Platinum Blonde Bombshell, Jean Harlow.
10. Amassed a collection of over 400 books in her library, ranging from Russian Literature to Psychology.
11. Favourite perfume was Chanel No.5
12. Had two half siblings; Robert “Jackie” Baker (1918 – 1933) and Bernice Miracle (1919) – the former she would never have the chance to meet and Bernice was not informed about Marilyn until she was 19 years old.
13. Former Actor and 20th Century Fox Studio Executive, Ben Lyon created the name Marilyn Monroe in December 1946 – Marilyn after fellow Actress, Marilyn Miller and Monroe after Marilyn’s mother’s maiden name. Ironically enough, Ben starred with Jean Harlow, in her breakout movie, Hell’s Angels (1930).
14. Legally changed her name to Marilyn Monroe ten years later, on February 23rd 1956.
15. Attended The Actors Studio.

17. First had her hair bleached in January 1946 at the Frank & Joseph Salon by Beautician Sylvia Barnhart, originally intended for a Shampoo Advert.
18. Contrary to popular belief, she was technically a natural blonde, not a redhead or brunette. She was born with platinum hair and was very fair until just before her teen years. Her sister described her with having dark blonde hair upon their first meeting in 1944.
19. Another myth debunked – she had blue eyes, not brown.
20. Was one of the few women in the 1950s to use weights when exercising.
21. Wore jeans before it was considered acceptable for women.

24. Found out she landed the lead role in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) on her 26th Birthday.
25. Another huge myth dispelled – only actually met President Kennedy four times from 1961 – 1962. Three of them were at public events, with the last being her performance at Madison Square Garden. One of them was at Bing Crosby’s Palm Spring house with various people, so at most (which again, is very unlikely) they had a one night stand – nothing more and nothing less.
26. Was the first Playboy Cover Girl, although she did not actually pose for them, nor give permission for them to be used. Hugh Hefner bought the photograph from a Chicago Calendar Company for $500 and the two never met.
27. Speaking of Playboy, the photo was taken by Photographer Tom Kelley on May 27th 1951 and Marilyn made a total of $50 for the photo shoot. The most famous photo then went on to cause a national sensation after being sold to the Calendar Baumgarth Company and became known as, “Golden Dreams“.

35. Favourite bevarage was Dom Perignon 1953 Champagne.

37. Designer, William Travilla dressed Marilyn for seven of her films, two (*) of them received Oscar Nominations in, “Best Costume/Design, Color“;
– Monkey Business (1952) – Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) – How To Marry A Millionaire (1953) * – River Of No Return (1954) – There’s No Business Like Show Business (1954) * – The Seven Year Itch (1955) – Bus Stop (1956)
38. Spent 21 months of her childhood at the Los Angeles Orphanage, from September 13th 1935 until June 7th 1937.
39. Was one of the first Stars to speak out about child abuse, with her story appearing in movie magazines as early as 1954.
40. Fostered by her grandmother’s neighbours, Ida and Albert Bolender, for the first seven years of her life.
41. Lived in England for four months, during the period of filming for The Prince and The Showgirl (1957) from July 14th 1956 – November 20th 1956.
42. Her Production Company, Marilyn Monroe Productions produced only one film, The Prince and The Showgirl (1957) based on Terrance Rattigan’s play, The Sleeping Prince.
43. Was photographed by Earl Theisen in October 1952 wearing a potato sack dress after being criticized by the press for her outfit choice at The Henrietta Awards in January 1952. A journalist wrote that Marilyn was “insignificant and vulgar“and “even in a potato bag, it would have been more elegant.“
44. Was a huge supporter of LGBT+ rights, saying the following quote about fellow actor and friend, Montgomery Clift to journalist W.J. Weatherby in 1960,
“I was remembering Monty Clift. People who aren’t fit to open the door for him sneer at his homosexuality. What do they know about it? Labels–people love putting labels on each other. Then they feel safe. People tried to make me into a lesbian. I laughed. No sex is wrong if there’s love in it.”
45. Her measurements were listed as the following by her Dressmakers; 35-22-35 and 36-24-24 by The Blue Book  Modelling Agency. For the majority of her life she weighed between 117-120 pounds, with her weight fluctuating around 15 pounds, during and after her pregnancies (1957-1960), although her waist never ventured past 28.5 inches and her dress size today would be a UK Size 6-8 and a US Size 2-4 as she was a vintage Size 12.
46. Her famous white halter dress from The Seven Year Itch (1955) sold for $4.6 million ($5.6 million including auction fees) on June 18th 2011, which was owned by Debbie Reynolds. The “Happy Birthday Mr. President Dress” originally held the record for the most expensive dress, when it was sold on October 27th 1999 for $1.26 million. It then went on to be resold for $4.8 million on November 17th 2016, thus regaining it’s original achievement.
47. Was discovered by Photographer, David Conover, whilst working in The Radio Plane Munitions Factory in the Fall of 1944 or Spring of 1945, depending on sources.
48. Now known as the, “Me Too” movement, Marilyn was one of the first Stars to speak out on the, “Hollywood Wolves” in a 1953 article for Motion Picture Magazine entitled, “Wolves I Have Known”. The most famous incident being with the Head of Columbia Studios, Harry Cohn, who requested Marilyn join him on his yacht for a weekend away in Catalina Island. Marilyn asked if his wife would be joining them, which, as you can imagine – did not go down well and her contract was not renewed with the Studio. Marilyn made only one film with Columbia during her six month contract, this being Ladies Of The Chorus (1948) which was shot in just ten days!
49. Loved animals dearly and adopted a variety of pets over the years. These included a basset hound called Hugo and parakeets, Clyde, Bobo and Butch with Husband Arthur Miller.  A number of cats including a persian breed called Mitsou in 1955 and Sugar Finney in 1959. Her most famous pet was gifted to her in March or April of 1961 by friend, Frank Sinatra, a little white maltese named Maf. His full name was Mafia Honey, as a humorous reference to Sinatra’s alleged connections to the Mob. After Marilyn’s death, Maf went to live with Frank Sinatra’s secretary, Gloria Lovell.
50. The book she was reading at the time of her death was Harper Lee’s, To Kill A Mocking Bird.
51. One of the movies she starred in was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture and won, this being All About Eve (1950) at The 23rd Academy Awards on March 29th 1951. It ended up being nominated for 14 Oscars, a record at the time and has only been matched by Titanic (1997) and La La Land (2016).
52. Her first magazine cover was photographed by Andre de Dienes in December 1945 for Family Circle, released on April 26th 1946.
53. Joined The William Morris Agency on December 7th 1948.
54. Was right handed, not left as often believed.
55. Third Husband Arthur Miller wrote the screenplay for Marilyn’s last completed film, The Misfits (1961) which was originally written as a short story for Esquire Magazine in 1957. After the tragic ectopic pregnancy Marilyn endured in August of 1957, friend and Photographer, Sam Shaw suggested to Miller he alter his short story specifically for her. Ironically the making of this film culminated in their divorce and Marilyn stating,
“He could have written me anything and he comes up with this. If that’s what he thinks of me then I’m not for him and he’s not for me.” 56. Was Author, Truman Capote’s original choice for the role of Holly Golightly in Breakfast At Tiffany’s (1961) however, she was advised to turn it down by her Acting Coach, Paula Strasberg, who did not think the role of a prostitute would be good for her image. Writer George Axelrod, who wrote the Screenplay for Bus Stop (1956) and the play, The Seven Year Itch, ironically ended up being the Screenwriter for this movie.
Capote said this regarding Marilyn,
“I had seen her in a film and thought she would be perfect for the part. Holly had to have something touching about her . . . unfinished. Marilyn had that.”
57. Second Husband Joe Dimaggio had The Parisian Florists deliver red roses on Marilyn’s grave twice a week, for twenty years, from August 1962 until September 1982. Marilyn had told him how William Powell used to do this for Jean Harlow after her death and he reportedly vowed to do the same after their Wedding Ceremony. After the 20 years he then donated to a children’s charity, as he thought it would be a nice way to honour her memory. They also created the flower arrangements for her casket at her funeral.
58. The following five Directors directed Marilyn in more than one movie;
– John Huston; The Asphalt Jungle (1950) and The Misfits (1961) – Richard Sale;  A Ticket To Tomahawk (1950) and Let’s Make It Legal (1951) – Howard Hawks; Monkey Business (1952) and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) – Billy Wilder; The Seven Year Itch (1955) and Some Like It Hot (1959) – George Cukor; Let’s Make Love (1960) and Something’s Got To Give (1962)
59. Was an illegitimate child, which unfortunately was attached with a lot of stigma in the 1920s. Her mother, Gladys, listed her then husband Edward Mortenson on the Birth Certificate, although it is commonly accepted that her real father was Charles Stanley Gifford, as Gladys left Edward on May 26th 1925. Gladys had an affair with him, which ended when she announced her pregnancy and he never acknowledged or met Marilyn, although she tried multiple times over the years to speak with him.
60. Stayed in a number of foster homes during her childhood,
– George and Emma Atkinson; February 1934 – September 1934 – Enid and Sam Knebelcamp; Fall of 1934 – Harvey and Elsie Giffen; January 1935 – March 1935 – Grace and “Doc” Goddard; April 1935 – September 1935 and June 1937 – November 1937 and end of 1940 – February 1942 – Ida Martin; November 1937 – August 1938 – “Aunt Ana” Lower; August 1938  – End of 1940 and February 1942
61. Had her hand and footprints immortalized in cement at Graumans Chinese Theatre on June 26th 1953, with Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) co-star, Jane Russell. Marilyn would place a rhinestone in the dot of the letter “i” as a reference to her character, “Lorelei Lee” but it was sadly stolen. This was an incredibly special moment for her, as she often talked about placing her hands and feet in the many prints there, when she spent her weekends at the Theatre as a child, especially in 1933 and 1934.
“When I was younger, I used to go to Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and try to fit my foot in the prints in the cement there. And I’d say “Oh, oh, my foots too big. I guess that’s out.” I did have a funny feeling later when I finally put my foot down into that wet cement, I sure knew what it really meant to me, anything’s possible, almost.”
62. The famous gold lamé dress worn in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) and designed by William Travilla, was deemed too risqué by the censors. Unfortunately for fans, this meant that the musical number, “Down Boy” was cut from the film and we only glimpse a few seconds of the dress from behind, on screen.
63. Due to the censors, the original, “Diamond’s Are A Girl’s Best Friend” costume was changed to the now iconic pink dress with black bow. Originally it was to be a diamond encrusted two piece, which was extremely daring for the then Motion Picture Hays Code.
64. Loved Erno Lazlo Skin Cream, Vaseline and Nivea Moisturizer.
65. Had she completed Something’s Got To Give (1962), Marilyn would have been the first Star in a major Motion Picture to appear nude on film. As she passed before it was completed the achievement went to fellow Blonde Bombshell, Jayne Mansfield in, Promises! Promises (1963).
66. Met Queen Elizabeth II in England at the Empire Theater in Leicester Square whilst attending the Premiere of, “The Battle Of The River Plate“ on October 29th 1956.
67. The Misfits (1961) was both Marilyn and Clark Gable’s last completed films. Clark died 12 days after filming finished, on November 16th 1960. The film was released on Clark’s would be 60th Birthday, February 1st 1961 and Marilyn passed 18 months later.
68. As Marilyn died before the completion of Something’s Got To Give (1962) it ended up being remade with Doris Day and James Garner, entitled, Move Over Darling! (1963). The film was originally intended to be a remake of, My Favourite Wife (1940) which starred Cary Grant.
69. Signed a recording contract with RCA Records on September 1st 1953. One of her songs from River of No Return (1954) entitled, “File My Claim” sold 75,000 copies in its first three weeks of release.
70. Was admitted to the Payne Whitney Psychiatric Clinic on February 10th 1961 by her then Psychiatrist, Marianne Kris. Originally thought to be for rest and rehabilitation, following her divorce from Arthur Miller and the strain of filming The Misfits. However, Marilyn was placed on the security ring and held against her will. Thankfully, she was able to contact ex Husband, Joe Dimaggio, who stated he would, “Take the hospital apart brick by brick” if she was not released and after three days of emotional trauma, she left.
71. Visited the following Countries;
– Canada – (July – August 1953) – Japan (February 1954) – Korea (Feburary 1954) – England (July – November 1956) – Jamaica (January 1957) – Mexico (February 1962)
72. Purchased her only home, 12305 Fifth Helena Drive on February 8th 1962, where she would tragically pass just under 6 months later.
73. The home had the following tile located on the front paving entrance saying, “cursum perficio” meaning, “my journey ends here.” The title is still there to this day.
74. Her final interview was published in LIFE Magazine on August 3rd 1962 and was written by Richard Meryman.
75. Aside from her millions of fans, had a staunch group of supporters affectionately known as, “The Monroe Six” who followed Marilyn around New York during her time there. Their nickname for Marilyn was, “Mazzie” and they became so acquainted that Marilyn actually once invited them for a picnic at her home.
76. First married at just sixteen years old, this was to avoid returning to the Orphanage she had spent almost two years in as a child.
77. Supported numerous charity events, most famously riding a pink elephant in Madison Square Garden, to support the Arthritis and Rheumatic Affections Association on March 30th 1955.
78. Left 25% of her Estate to her then Psychiatrist, Marianne Kris and 75% to mentor and friend, Lee Strasberg. For reference, her Will was last updated on January 1961 – a month before she entered the Payne Whitney Hospital on the advice of Marianne Kris.
79. At the time of it’s release, The Misfits (1961) turned out to be the most expensive black and white movie ever made, costing a budget of $4 million dollars.
80. The Premiere of The Seven Year Itch was held on her 29th Birthday, on June 1st 1955, she attended with ex Husband, Joe Dimaggio.
81. Laid to rest at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery on August 8th 1962 at 1:00 PM, with friend and mentor Lee Strasberg delivering the Eulogy.
82. Although so often associated with diamonds, actually wasn’t that fond of jewellery stating, “People always ask me if I believe diamonds are a girl’s best friend. Frankly, I don’t.”
83. Spent her 36th Birthday filming Something’s Got To Give (1962) and then attending a Charity Event for muscular dystrophy at the Chavez Ravin Dodger Stadium, which also happened to be her last public appearance.
84. Whilst recovering in hospital from an appendectomy in April 1952, Marilyn asked long time Makeup Artist and friend, Allan “Whitey” Snyder to do her makeup, should she pass before him. She gave him a gold money clip with the inscription, “Whitey Dear, while I’m still warm, Marilyn” and he did fulfill this promise to her.
85. Converted to Judaism for third husband, Arthur Miller on July 1st 1956.
86. Despite appearing in 30 films, she only actually dies in one, that being her breakout movie, Niagara (1953) where her character Rose Loomis, is strangled by her Husband George, played by Joseph Cotten.
87. Moved to New York City in 1955 and attended The Actors Studio, after breaking her Film Contract with 20th Century Fox. This was for a number of reasons, mainly years of low pay, unsatisfactory scripts and lack of creative control. A new contract would finally be reinstated on December 31st.
88. Repurchased a white Baby Grand Piano that her mother, Gladys, owned during their time living together in 1933. After Marilyn passed it would then be sold at the Christies Auction of her Estate in 1999 to none other than, Mariah Carey for $632,500.
89. Wore long hair pieces in River of No Return (1954) and a medium length wig in The Misfits (1961). The first I can only assume was due to the time period and setting of a Western and the second was due to the bleach damage her hair had suffered. After the filming in 1960, she wore the wig a couple of times in public events and then reverted back to her normal hair.
90. Like all students, it was tradition to perform in front of each other in The Actors Studio and on February 17th 1955, Marilyn acted out a scene from “Anna Christie” with Maureen Stapleton. Although it was an unwritten rule that students were not meant to applaud one another, an eruption of cheers and clapping happened after Marilyn had finished.
“Everybody who saw that says that it was not only the best work Marilyn ever did, it was some of the best work ever seen at Studio, and certainly the best interpretation of Anna Christie anybody ever saw. She achieved real greatness in that scene.”
– Actor Ellen Burstyn, on recalling Marilyn’s performance.
91. Used the pseudonym, “Zelda Zonk“, when trying to remain incognito.
92. Marilyn’s mother, Gladys Baker, suffered from Paranoid Schizophrenia and after various stays in institutions, was declared insane on January 15th 1935, when Marilyn was just 8 years old. After 10 years she was released and managed to retain various cleaning jobs and had developed an intense interest in Christian Science. However, by 1951 she was back in various institutions and would stay in the Rockhaven Sanitarium until 1967. Even after death, Marilyn continued to cover her mother’s care payments and Gladys would go on to outlive her for 22 years.
93. Favourite photograph of herself was taken by Cecil Beaton on February 22nd 1956.
94. Last professional photos were taken by Bert Stern, famously known as “The Last Sitting” for Vogue Magazine on June 23rd, July 10th and 12th 1962. Allan Grant took the LIFE Magazine interview pictures in her home, on July 4th and 9th 1962. Whilst George Barris took his photos for Cosmopolitan Magazine, the previous weekend on the 29th and 30th of June, until July 1st 1962. ______________________________________________________________________________
To those of you who took the time to read through all 3000+ words, thank you! It truly means more to me than you know and I really hope it’s shed some light on the truly special person Marilyn was and made you hold a good thought for her on her big day.

Happy 94th Birthday Marilyn! Today is a very special day, it's Marilyn's Birthday! Can you believe that if she were still alive,  Marilyn would have been turning 94 years old today - just two months younger than the Queen herself!

Okay so. I have researched the owner of this corset:
Tumblr media
At the V&A [here], and here’s their description of it:
This corset was designed and made for the wedding of Mrs G.E. Dixon in July 1905. It is an S-bend corset, typified by the straight busk that compelled the pelvis backwards and the bust forwards into an angled ‘S’ shape. The corset offered some light control around the lower abdomen with strategically placed whalebones; however, since corsets rely on boning and strong fabrics for rigidity, the insertion of Mechlin-style machine lace and fine silk satin between the bones show that its function is largely decorative. The neckline is high, and the entire bust area is made of transparent lace decorated with silk flowers. At the bottom of the corset are four long suspender ribbons, attached with small gathered silk rosettes.
The object history:  “Made for and worn by the donor, Marie Dixon, for her wedding, July 1905.”
So, we know her name is Marie, and she married someone called G. E. Dixon in 1905! It was made in the UK so let’s presume they lived in the UK, right?
And we know, July 1905. That brings us here -
Tumblr media
George Edwin Dixon and Marie Katherine Harriett Bokenham were married on July 19th 1905, in Hanwell, Middlesex. She was 21 and a spinster (not previously married), and he was 42, twice her age and a widower.
Both their fathers were listed as gentlemen - Mr Bokenham was a civil engineer born in Peru in about 1856, who was mostly listed as “living on own means”, i.e., very rich, and Mr Dixon - well. I can’t find him. We know he ought to be Canadian, by G.E.’s 1911 census, but as I can search (that’s UK, USA and Canada, really), I can’t find a George/Geo./Edwin/G. E. Dixon/Dickson/Dickinson etc born to a a man of the same name within ten years of George’s reported birth who might reasonably be described a “gentleman”. There were several farmers in Canada, tho. And a shoemaker. So, I’m thinking, George here lied and bigged himself up a bit for his new wife’s family - given they were reasonably well-off, and to make the age difference a little more palatable, perhaps.
George is listed as a “Doctor of Medicine”, which is also shown on the 1911 census
Tumblr media
Here, it’s shown that they’ve been married 5 years, which we know, and that they are now 47 and 26, so nobody fudged facts (or at least dates, anyway) on the marriage record, which is always good to see. George is now the director of a company making “capsuloids for the hair: antitoxine. cicfa”. A bit less fancy, maybe, than “doctor of medicine”, which lends itself to my theory.
More new information is that though they only have two rooms (we count the kitchen as a room, but not the scullery, landing, lobby, closet or bathroom, according to the little box for writing that information in), they do live in Hyde Park, at 20 Cambridge Street (what is now Cambridge Place, I assume after the bombing in the Blitz). They share with their landlady, a Mrs Jessie Craig from Glasgow, who has 9 rooms (and 2 sons and a live-in domestic servant called Lily Ford), and a retired navy lieutenant (”Lieut R N Retired”) by the name of Guy Renton Livingstone, who is Irish and the secretary of a golf school (that’s a thing?) and occupies one room.
A large house, tho the Dixons only have a small part of it.
I do imagine somewhat, though, that this maybe isn’t quite what Marie had in mind when she married a doctor - but you never know, perhaps they were in love or something, I can’t go back in time to ask them, and maybe I’m being far too cynical.
What I have found, though, is they went to America!
From their “arriving passenger” records, I have a description of them, their address in America, their address in England, George’s occupation, and how long they intended to stay.
So, in 1921, George was 58 years old, 5ft half an inch, with a fresh complexion, grey hair and blue eyes, and was a chemist. He is also listed as having visited the US in 1892.
Marie was 38, 5ft 5, with a fresh complexion, brown hair and brown eyes.
They lived in Marlow, Bucks, in the UK, but they intended to stay permanently in the USA - their American address as listed was 14 East 50th Street New York, tho I don’t know much at all about New York as to tell you about that, tbh, but I do know from Google Maps, it’s just near Madison Ave and 5th Ave, which to me sounds very fancy.
Above the “permanent”, in pencil, there’s a note that says “2 mo.”, and they did not intend to become citizens.
I’m not sure if they did only stay their intended 2 months, or what happened, but the next record I have is that they return to England in April 1928, 1st class to Bristol. The “incoming passenger” list gives much less information, but I know that George is still the director of a company, and they are going to live at Cedar Cottage in Marlow.
Here it is!
Tumblr media
George dies, unfortunately, in September that same year - maybe they returned to England as he was sick, I don’t know. His effects were over £30k, which is over £1.3 million today.
From the accession number on the corset, I think this is when Marie donated her wedding corset to the V&A.
Marie, however, didn’t much hang around, shall we say.
She went to India, and married a man called Richard Valentine Read on 6th December 1929, the very same year she was widowed.
I haven’t a description of Richard, because I can’t access his war records properly, but I know his middle name was Valentine because he was born on Valentine’s Day in 1892 - he was four years younger than Marie. His father was a member of the London Stock Exchange, and Richard was a colonel in the British military (I know he had shore leave in Puerto Rico in 1939) - in 1925, leaving Liverpool on a round cruise to Lisbon and the Canary Islands, he’s listed as “Capt R V Read, DSO MC” which denotes him as someone of Distinguished Service who earned the Military Cross.
They went to America in early 1933 - to Santa Barbara, California, this time, to visit a Mrs Carrington for a week, at Villa Riposte.
Aha, here we have a description of them both. Marie is 5ft6, now with grey hair and brown eyes, at 47 years old. Richard is 6ft4, with grey hair and blue eyes, at 41 years old. Their last address is in “Kawalpiudi”, India - I rather think that’s a terrible spelling of Rawalpindi, which is now Pakistan - but their American visas were issued in London.
Oh, their incoming New York papers have more description info.
Marie is “sallow” with brown hair and brown eyes, and Richard is “fair” with light brown hair and grey eyes, a tattoo on his right forearm and a war scar on his right shoulder.
I wonder at the difference in their descriptions between December 1932 (New York) and January 1933 (Los Angeles), but there’s no solving that I spose. It’ll just be the different people who took their details down.
They were quite jetsetters actually - I assume, in some way it was with Richard’s job, since he’s listed once as an attaché - they went to Genoa in February 1935, Yokohama in August 1936, New York in 1938 - though Richard went alone to Marseilles in 1935, and to Palestine in 1937.
I can’t find any record following these, or of Marie’s death - there are too many Marie Read’s about, and she might’ve been recorded as Mary, as well, so I can’t narrow it down, and there’s nothing I can find in the British papers - I do know that Richard remarried in 1953, though, and died at sea in 1964. He lived in Fredonia NY, and left £6000 to his wife Joyce.
So! I haven’t quite the whole story, I don’t think, but a lot of it at least, which is something!
It’s a shame I couldn’t find photos or anything, but I found quite a bit I reckon.

TCMFF  Home Edition Must Watch List
Hello friends!
I was supposed to be on a plane today to go to my first TCM Film Festival, but stuff happens and then you have a pandemic and everything gets canceled and you have to stay home! ANYWAYS, TCM decided to bring us some joy by playing programming for all of us, giving us the film festival, but at home.
I have decided to list my must watch films for this Home Edition of the festival!
Thursday, April 16th
8 pm: A Star is Born (1954, George Cukor)
Tumblr media
Starring Judy Garland, James Mason, Jack Carson, and Charles Bickford
On TCM’s website, this was listed as the inaugural film for the 2010 TCMFF. It’s also a film that is Judy Garland at her best. Garland lights up the screen as Esther Blodgett/Vicki Lester. This film has fantastic musical numbers, beautiful colors, and is the best starting film for this festival.
11 PM: Metropolis (1927, Fritz Lang)
Tumblr media
Starring Gustav Frohlich, Alfred Abel, Brigitte Helm, and Rudolf Klein-Rogge
If you have never seen a silent film or a German Expressionist film, watch this! Metropolis is the film that aged so well. A futuristic utopia from the lens of the 1920s is very interesting to watch and also some of the themes of this film can be translated to life today. I will say, the film can be described by some as “weird” but I wouldn’t let that stop you from watching it!
Friday, April 17th
2 PM: Eva Marie Saint Live from the TCM Classic Film Festival (2014)
Tumblr media
Eva Marie Saint is one of my favorite classic film actresses. She has class, she has poise, and she is very talented. In 2014, TCM had a sit down with the actress to talk about herself and her films. This is such a treat to see!
3 PM: North by Northwest (1959, Alfred Hitchcock)
Tumblr media
Starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James Mason, Jessie Royce Landis, and Martin Landau
Another case of mistaken identity and suspense! Hitchcock knew what he was doing when he hired Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint to “sex” up in the screen during the 1950s. Their chemistry is electric. The airplane scene is such an intense watch. And James Mason seems to be good at playing a suave bad guy.
5:45 PM: Some Like It Hot (1959, Billy Wilder)
Tumblr media
Starring Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Marilyn Monroe, Joe E. Brown, George Raft, and Pat O’Brien
Men witnessing a crime and then parading as women so they don’t get murdered! What a farce! Let’s be real, the best chemistry in the film is between Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. They play off each other so well. I will say, I do believe Marilyn Monroe was at her best in this film! Need a laugh, watch this!
1:30 AM: Grey Gardens (1975, Albert Maysles, David Maysles, Ellen Hovde, and Muffy Meyer)
Tumblr media
Starring Edith “Big Edie” Ewing Bouvier Beale and Edith “Little Edie” Bouvier Beale
This documentary is fascinating. It is fun but at times absolutely heartbreaking. Big Edie and Little Edie were definitely a fine pair. It is interesting watching the aunt and cousin of Jackie Kennedy Onassis, because they aren’t living in luxury, which would be expected due to their relation. Big and Little Edie are characters that you have to see to believe. The irony is, they are real people and not acting roles.
5 AM: Kim Novak: Live from the TCM Film Festival (2013)
Tumblr media
Kim Novak is so much more than her looks and this interview opened my eyes to how amazing she is as a person as well as an actress.
Saturday, April 18th (AKA MY BIRTHDAY)
6 AM: The Man with The Golden Arm (1955, Otto Preminger)
Tumblr media
Starring Frank Sinatra, Eleanor Parker, and Kim Novak
This is one of the grittiest films from the 1950s. It depicts a heroin addict during their ups and downs. I was honestly surprised this film got made at all during the Production Code Era, but am very glad it did. Sinatra is so raw in his performance and Eleanor Parker creates a complex character as his wife. Of course, Kim Novak is wonderful to watch because she is more than just beautiful, she is an actress. This film really showcases her talent.
1:15 PM: Safety Last! (1923, Fred C. Newmeyer and Sam Taylor)
Tumblr media
Starring Harold Lloyd, Mildred Davis, and Bill Strother
Zany antics a plenty! That’s the best description of this film. Harold Lloyd films are always great to watch because he wasn’t afraid to do crazy things to get a laugh. This film has the infamous clock scene too!
2:45 PM: They Live By Night (1949, Nicholas Ray)
Tumblr media
Starring Farley Granger, Cathy O’Donnell, and Howard Da Silva
If you only watch one movie on this list, THIS NEEDS TO BE THE ONE. It’s ironic that it airs on my birthday, because this is one of my favorite films. The story of doomed lovers who try their best to reform from a life of crime to survive wasn’t a new concept, but man, Farley Granger and Cathy O’Donnell make you fall in love with their characters and hope that they somehow, someway make it to their life of happiness together.
10 PM: The Magnificent Ambersons (1942, Orson Welles)
Tumblr media
Starring Joseph Cotten, Dolores Costello, Anne Baxter, Tim Holt, and Agnes Moorehead
This film is another case of a film that got cut down by the studio, and in case you were wondering, Orson Welles was pissed. I would hope and pray one day we all get to see the full version (kinda doubtful), but this film isn’t so bad. I think the all-star cast really makes it worth it!
Sunday, April 19th
6 AM: Jezebel (1938, William Wyler)
Tumblr media
Starring Bette Davis, Henry Fonda, and George Brent
I am not gonna lie, my first viewing of this film enraged me. Henry Fonda’s character made me so mad because he was a jerk. But I have decided I need to rewatch this film and see if my attitudes have changed. This film did so many great things for Bette Davis and Henry Fonda, so we should all give it another (or first) go around. Also this was the film Jane Fonda was born during! Just a fun fact.
3:30 PM: Auntie Mame (1958, Morton DaCosta)
Tumblr media
Starring Rosalind Russell, Forrest Tucker, Coral Browne, Jan Handzlik, and Roger Smith
I want to be Auntie Mame. She is so much fun and so unique and I love it. The costumes are so grand in this film and Rosalind Russell really does a great job of bringing Mame to life. This film is so fun!!!
6 PM: Singin’ in the Rain (1952, Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly)
Tumblr media
Starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, Donald O’Connor, and Jean Hagen
This is in my top 5 musicals. This musical always makes me smile and it is one of the few musicals where I know most of the words to the songs. The trio of Kelly, Reynolds, and O’Connor is something magical. Cosmo Brown is also one of my favorite characters in any film (and one of my cat’s namesakes). The film history alone with this film makes it worth watching! JUST WATCH THIS MUSICAL, OKAY?
9:45 PM: The Hustler (1961, Robert Rossen)
Tumblr media
Starring Paul Newman, Jackie Gleason, Piper Laurie, and George C. Scott
Paul Newman is so cool in general, so he was born for this role. I never knew a movie about pool would have my interest, but here we are. The tension between Newman and Jackie Gleason is so well played and the way the film is shot, you feel like you are in the room with them. Also Piper Laurie does a great performance as the conflicted girlfriend of Newman’s ambitious pool shark.
12:15 AM: Baby Face (1933, Alfred E. Green)
Tumblr media
Starring Barbara Stanwyck, George Brent, and Donald Cook
THIS IS PRECODE HEAVEN! You have a woman who uses sex to get ahead in life and men become entranced, and usually destroyed, by her. Barbara Stanwyck plays her character so well that you have a love-hate relationship with her. She can be cruel, but you understand why she is doing what she is doing.
